Why This Controversial Organizing Method Is Exactly What You Need

Letting go of clutter is hard to do. Anyone who has encountered the teachings of Japanese cleaning guru Marie Kondo knows that minimalism is currently all the rage; her housekeeping manual, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, has inspired legions of readers to throw away their unneeded belongings - and Marie Kondo's newest book, Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up is in January's POPSUGAR Must Have Box, which you can buy here! We love all things related to organization and have to admit to clearing out our drawers and closets in a fit of aspirational tidying ourselves.

Not everyone, though, is on board with KonMari, the nickname Kondo gave her techniques. As with any good trend, there's a corresponding backlash. Back in May, a writer for The New York Times extolled the virtues of living a life surrounded by things in an article called "Let's Celebrate the Art of Clutter."

Whether you're pro- or anticlutter, you must admit there's a certain calmness to be found in a well-organized drawer. Read through to see 25 examples of Marie's method at work, and see if you aren't a little inspired to take a turn at organizing your own home.

The Secret to the Cake of Your Dreams Lies in a Mix

Many cakes are better made from scratch - chocolate, angel food, and carrot for starters - but when it comes to yellow cake and Funfetti, we're proudly on team boxed cake mix. We're not sure what it is (some sort of magic dust, perhaps), but it just tastes right. That being said, there are a few things that can be done to make it taste even better.

First off, this is going to be controversial - but skip the Funfetti cake mix. Instead pick up a box of yellow cake mix (it's richer in flavor than Funfetti's white cake base) and a big container of rainbow sprinkles; you're going to make your own Funfetti! Don't even think about tossing a tub of store-bought frosting into your cart (sorry, but no - shortening-based frosting is just wrong).

Mix up the cake mix according to the box's instructions (in this case, we added 1 cup water, 1/2 cup vegetable oil, and 3 eggs), and then fold in a whopping 3/4 cup rainbow sprinkles (don't overmix, or the sprinkles' color can bleed). Bake the cake according to the box's instructions - we're partial to a good, old-fashioned sheet cake, for ease, but you do you - and let cool completely.

Meanwhile, it's time to make the frosting of your dreams. This is not the time for a swiss meringue buttercream, which is too airy, light, and, frankly, refined for this application. Rather, we're going for a dense, salty-sweet, butter-rich recipe that's like tub frosting but 100 percent tastier (and made with far less scary ingredients). Follow this salted buttercream recipe, scaling back all of the ingredients by half.

Finally, ice your cake, blanket it with a ludicrous amount of rainbow sprinkles, and decorate with the cutest candles you can find. On the hunt for candles? We've had the best luck at suburban Target and Safeway stores; Amazon also has some cute options.

Want to take your boxed-cake creations to the next level? Try one of these clever recipes that also start with a mix.

We Just Super Liked the Tinder CEO's Bachelor Pad

The cofounder and CEO of Tinder, Sean Rad, just listed his two-bedroom, three-bathroom Los Angeles condo, and to state the obvious pun: we're swiping right - we might even super like it. The 2,298-square-foot apartment is more sophisticated than the average bachelor pad. We're loving the emphasis on earth tones, clean lines, and modern elegance. The open-plan living room and stunning windows breathe freshness into the apartment. We'd venture a guess that Sean's favorite room is the bathroom, since his massive bathtub has a longing for a spa day - or romantic soak for two.

The buyer will be conveniently located to several hot neighborhoods of Tinder users, as the apartment sits at the intersection of Westwood, Holmby Hills, Century City, and Beverly Hills. You can snag Rad's condo for $1.795 million - the top-floor views of Los Angeles, walk-in closet, and abundance of natural light are well worth the steep price tag. As for Rad's new abode, he's said to have upgraded to a $7.5 million penthouse down the road in the same celeb-filled building where Yolanda Foster just moved.

What Happens When the Most Iconic Bagel Flavor Becomes a Doughnut

When my editor asked me to head to Manhattan's West Village to try The Doughnut Projects' everything doughnut, the nicest comment I could come up with was "that sounds questionable," but today, I'm prepared to eat my words. Combining the concept of a salty, seedy everything bagel and a sweet frosted doughnut may very well be a ploy to create the next attention-getting viral pastry, but it also results in a doughnut that is just plain good. Sesame seeds, pepitas, and poppyseeds add crunch and nuttiness, while a just-right amount of salt balances but doesn't overpower the sweet icing on the yeasted doughnut. I was thankful that I couldn't detect any dehydrated garlic or onion (both traditional everything bagel components), though other reports claim garlic as one of the toppings. (Some might quibble that this omission diminishes the everything-bagel-ness of the doughnut, but I think The Doughnut Project had the right idea here.) Overall, it's a pastry that is both creative in concept and actually worth eating.

TL;DR: The Doughnut Project's everything doughnut is well worth a trip to Manhattan's West Village. Also consider trying the doughnut shop's peanut butter and jelly, grapefruit rosemary, and chocolate pretzel doughnuts while you're there.

Read This Before You Order Starbucks's Limited-Edition Butterscotch Latte

Starbucks and Harry Potter fans, hold onto your sorting hats. If you're dying to try butterbeer but are just not going to take the time to make it at home, you're going to want to try Starbucks's newest drink, the Smoked Butterscotch Latte. We were skeptical when we heard claims that the drink resembled butterbeer, so we turned to our resident Harry Potter World experts, and guess what they said? "Tastes like straight-up butterbeer."

The main difference, of course, is the coffee taste - real butterbeer is free of coffee, so if you want the closest thing to the Harry Potter drink without having to travel, order the latte with no espresso so it becomes steamed milk, smoked butterscotch syrup, and a sprinkle of smoky butterscotch sugar on top.

That's not to say the drink was well liked by everyone. Other co-workers' comments were "tastes like sweet milk," "doesn't taste like butterscotch," and "not sweet - too smoked." Obviously everyone's palates (and coffee preferences) are different, so there's no guaranteeing you'll like it or not, but the limited-edition drink is worth a try if you're a butterscotch (or butterbeer) fan.

This Mason-Jar Hack Will Get You Barista-Worthy Coffee at Home

I'll take any time- and money-saving way to get even better coffee in the morning, so I knew I wanted to try this DIY frothy milk from Spoon University. The trick to getting barista-worthy foam on top of your brewed coffee at home? A mason jar and a microwave.

It took a few tries to get this hack right, but here's what you need to know to do this at home:

First, fill a mason jar about halfway with milk (I used reduced fat). Meanwhile, get your coffee brewing.

Next, put the lid on the jar and shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds, until the milk becomes bubbly and somewhat frothy. Then, (without the lid!), microwave on high for 45 seconds to 1 minute, depending on how hot you want it. This will warm the milk through and create a top layer of foam that you can scoop out and put on top of your cup of coffee.

While this won't be the most perfect foam, it's plenty good enough to get you through busy mornings when you want to upgrade your caffeine routine (more time for sleeping, amirite?).

How to Live Stylishly in a Studio Apartment

If there's one thing that gets a bad rap in design, it's the studio apartment. Often a rental with very little in the way of space, studios must do it all without room to spare. While it is a tall order, we found a place that does it just right. Tucked away in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, this studio is just as relaxing as it is energizing. Keeping rental restrictions and their client Jamie's laid-back style in mind, designers Lindsay Boswell and Ali Levin of LABLstudio created an urban oasis filled with ideas that anyone would sacrifice square footage for.

Mixing earthy and glamorous touches, this "hidden gem" evolved into a room suitable for sleeping, living, and entertaining. Getting creative with the space, Boswell and Levin incorporated unexpected pops of color using removable wallpaper and made sure every piece served a variety of purposes. The result proves that size isn't everything! Keep reading for a full studio tour and Lindsay and Ali's favorite tricks for decking out a small space.

The Prettiest Way to Make Over a Rental Kitchen

The following post was originally featured on Thou Swell and written by blogger Kevin O'Gara, who is part of POPSUGAR Select Home.

My family spends a lot of time in the kitchen - we love to cook (and eat), and my sisters and I help make dinner and clean up each night. It's an important space for our family to be together in. One of my favorite activities is to play the "what would I change" game in a room - although sometimes far-fetched, it's interesting to think of the simple solutions that could improve a room's light, space, and efficiency. Of course, the kitchen often becomes subject to these daydreaming sessions, as it's a room that's central to the house and frequently used. Besides, I think kitchens are the most easily dated rooms, because they are expensive to upgrade. One of our old kitchens hadn't been updated since the '50s, so the blue linoleum floors and counter-top oven were all still in place. Compared to that, our current one really wasn't a bad starting place. Everything was painted white, which made for a great blank slate for our rental kitchen makeover!

You Will Never Look at Oreos the Same Way Again After Reading These Facts

You may love Oreos, whether dunked in milk, crumbled over ice cream, or crumbled into pie crust. Despite the vast ways you've learned to enjoy the cream-filled sandwich cookie, have you ever stopped to think about its rich history? These fun facts will allow you to see the cookies in a whole new light.

  1. The origin of the name "Oreo" is unknown. Although, one Oreo exec says the name mimics the two O-shaped cookies that make the sandwich. Others claim the "re" comes from the "cream."
  2. Oreos are a total ripoff of Hydrox, the original cream-filled chocolate cookie, which came out in 1908. Oreos weren't released until 1912.
  3. Double-Stuf are actually 1.86 times more stuffed than regular Oreos. Do you feel slightly cheated?
  4. To date, Oreo has 41.8 million Facebooks followers. In comparison, The New York Times has 10.7 million.
  5. Oreo's first crazy flavor was Birthday Cake, released in 2012 for its centennial celebration. Since then, the company releases new flavors quarterly, but our favorites will always be cotton candy and marshmallow crispy.

What Are Pulses? The Food EVERYONE Will Talk About in 2016

The UN announced 2016 to be the Year of Pulses (FYI, they declared 2013 to be the Year of Quinoa), but what the heck are pulses? Yes, the word is actually defined in the dictionary, but to put it in the simplest terms, pulses are dry, edible seeds of legumes. While all pulses are technically legumes, the differentiating factor is that not all legumes are harvested to be dried. Fresh legumes like green peas, green beans, and soybeans or legumes harvested for oil extraction (like soybean) aren't classified as pulses. Confused yet? Don't worry! We have a list of the most commonly found pulses from the American Pulse Association. And when in doubt, remember if it's a dry, edible pea, bean, lentil, or chickpea, then it's probably a pulse.

Here's what that list includes:

Dry Peas
Split and/or whole green
Split and/or whole yellow

Black-eyed pea
Dark red kidney
Light red kidney
Great Northern
Navy
Pinto
Fava

Simply Genius Hacks For Updating a Rental Kitchen
