Seriously - there's a company-wide Try Before You Buy policy. This includes but is not limited to anything fresh from the produce section or any packaged foods within the center aisles of the store. She told POPSUGAR, "This is super handy when you head into the produce section. I've used it for things like a new apple variety - I'm very particular about apples. If there's a new apple that comes out, you can just ask someone in the produce section to cut you a slice, and then it actually turns into this fun communal thing because if you do that then other people will see it, and then you're hanging out with other customers."

You might want to brace yourself for what she told me next. "The same thing works for the cheese department, which is extra fun. If you have a specific question, you can end up tasting a bunch of cheeses to get the right one for whatever you're up to. Also, team members are completely empowered to open things on the interior shelves, too. If there's some weird cracker and you're like, 'Can this possibly be good if it's a gluten-free, seed-based cracker?' You can try it before you decide to buy it."

Cheese! Lacinato kale! Vegan white-cheddar popcorn! Not that I'm encouraging taking advantage of this tip so much that you get a free lunch made of samples from all over the store, but I'm just saying it's possible. Even frequent Whole Foods shoppers (like me) had no idea this budget-friendly policy existed. So the next time you step into your neighborhood Whole Foods Market, avoid the "Whole Foods, whole paycheck" stereotype by simply asking someone to try what you're eyeing.

Instagram Announces a New Look For Its App Icon and Feed

Your Instagram feed is about to look very different - along with its app icon. The company announced its first redesign in five years, with a cleaner, crisper look in the feed and a more colorful app icon.

Say goodbye to the cute little camera icon you used to know. The new app icon is still a camera - just in a white outline with a rainbow gradient. Instagram's other apps, Layout, Boomerang, and Hyperlapse, also got a similar redesign. You can take a look below.

But you probably most care about what your feed looks like. Don't fret - it has nothing to do with the proposed chronological timeline change but instead focuses on design. Gone is the blue header at the top and usernames in blue. Instead, everything but the photos and videos are in black and white. Whenever someone follows you or "likes" a post of yours, a brighter, pinker notification is its place. A before-and-after photo is above, and what it looks like on iOS and Android is below.

The change comes as the company starts to realign its values and understand how and why people use the app. "When Instagram was founded, it was a place to easily edit and share photos," wrote Ian Spalter, head of design at Instagram, in a Medium post. Now with other apps like Boomerang and Layout entering the Instagram sphere, the company wanted to reflect that. It's why the company changed how your feed looks - Instagram didn't want to pry your eyes from it with the blue colors. " . . . we believe the color should come directly from the community's photos and videos," Spalter wrote.

Though the changes are pretty minimal, people weren't exactly happy with it. Many took to Twitter to complain and stress what they didn't like about it.




Personally, we're not too upset about it. Instagram chose the right time to udpate its look and feel. We won't be talking about it in a few days anyways. The update rolls out today for both iOS and Android - it's your call whether to accept it or not.

Why the "Worst" Job I Had Was Actually the Best

When I was a junior in high school, I decided I wanted to be a journalist. I had only a vague idea of what working in journalism was really like, but I suspected I was good at it. As editor in chief of my high school literary magazine, I continued our first-place winning streak at Florida's state HS journalism competition (yep, that's a thing). I loved the thrill of working on deadline, editing stories, and coordinating all of the moving pieces to get a publication to print. I neglected my math homework and enjoyed diagramming sentences in my spare time.

Sh*t got real when I was accepted into the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, which is essentially an expensive version of trade school, in that it prepares you for one career path. Before I continued down this very specific path, I figured I should sample my chosen field, which led to one of the weirdest and most valuable jobs I've ever had. I started at the absolute bottom, and the experience was valuable in ways I never could have imagined. Here is why no one should ever be afraid to take the crappiest job they can find in their chosen career.

1. It's Not Just a Job

As my senior year of high school wound down, I needed a Summer job, and while there's nothing wrong with working in restaurants and retail, an entry-level job in the career you think you want to pursue can help you decide if that career is right for you. And if it is, you get a headstart on your résumé and on making connections in your industry. I started by asking anyone I knew how to get my foot in the door at the local newspaper, the Pensacola News Journal. Surely they had some entry-level job they'd give to an 18-year-old, right? Eventually, I hit an unlikely jackpot. The girlfriend of the mom of a kid I babysat had just been promoted from her job at the paper, and they needed to fill her position: part-time evening newsroom clerk.

Newsroom clerk was barely a journalism job, and it definitely wasn't prestigious. As the night clerk, I worked from 2 to 10 p.m. (admittedly, ideal hours for my 18-year-old self). I shared the job and a very dirty desk with the daytime clerk, who I'm pretty sure lived in his car (no judgment; just providing context here). My random assortment of responsibilities included writing obituaries, compiling lottery numbers and front-page indexes, and listening to people complain on the reader feedback voicemail line. But I was thrilled: I had a paying gig in journalism already at age 18.

2. You Gain Relevant Skills

At major newspapers, writing obituaries is a prestigious job, since it involves crafting post-mortem tributes to dignitaries and public figures. These were not the obits I was writing. I "wrote" the kind that people paid to publish in the paper, after filling out a form with all the pertinent info and some preferred wording. I had very little creative freedom, but I still wanted to be the best damn obit writer this town had ever seen, even if no one but me could tell the difference. I learned that I enjoyed the journalistic aspects: making sure the style was consistent across all the obits, calling funeral homes and sometimes grieving family members to fact-check details. I learned to be a professional interviewer and an accurate reporter, and I got over my fear of picking up the phone and calling strangers (in front of other people, no less).

Even weirder was my job listening to the "reader feedback line" voicemail, where citizens could call in with their opinions and might be quoted on the opinion pages. Not only was this highly entertaining, but it taught me very early on that the most vocal readers are usually the angry, grumpy, and outraged ones. The reader feedback line didn't get a lot of warm compliments. Working in online journalism now, I'm fortunate to have learned early on that you can't take feedback too personally and it's best to ignore the haters.

3. You Can Observe the Culture

Even in the sh*ttiest job in the newsroom, I was still in a newsroom, and I very quickly realized that this work environment suited me. For the most part, it seemed people moved up the ladder because they were talented, not because of office politics. I was surrounded by funny, smart, irreverant people who weren't at all stuffy and, at times, downright outrageous: I once witnessed our grumpy, 60-something female copy chief shout (loud enough for the entire newsroom to hear): "How many c*cks do I have to suck to get this page proofed?!" These were my people!

I also got used to working in a fast-paced, loud office environment, and I grew accustomed to unpredictable workdays, where the plan could change at any moment if there was breaking news. Turns out, that was all great training for online journalism, where I ultimately ended up. I watched talented people who were willing to work untraditional hours and who stayed at the office until the work was done, which inspired me to do the same at future jobs.

4. You Get a Clearer Picture of What You Want to Do

At any entry-level job, you have to do stuff that sucks. But the parts of it you hate are valuable for two reasons: you're motivated to ask for extra (more rewarding) work, and you gain a clearer idea of what you like and what you don't like.

The task I hated most as a clerk was inputting new business licenses, which had to be published in the money section every month or so. I had to walk a few blocks to the courthouse with a laptop the size of a butcher block, request the newly filed business licenses, and manually input all of the information. Not only was it very boring, but it also made me sad to see how many pitiful people wanted to start businesses that were clearly awful ideas; think at-home beanie baby businesses with names like "Barb's Beanie Babies." But spending two hours doing that made me yearn for more rewarding work, so I asked for it. I pitched stories to the features desk and wrote them in my spare time; working all those extra hours was totally worth it when I got my byline in the paper. Plus, I got my foot in the door, which led to freelance work and a paid internship on the features desk during college.

I also got to witness the different roles at the paper - copyeditors, feature writers, hard-news reporters - and talk to people about their jobs and observe their day-to-day lifestyles. In the break room or the "smoking hut," I asked writers and editors about their career paths, what stories they were working on, whatever. I realized that the idea of being a hard-news reporter sort of terrified me, and the features desk seemed more creative and fun. As a direct result of those observations, I decided to major in magazine journalism instead of newspapers. It was definitely the right decision, and one I couldn't have made without that first "crappy" job.

5. You Learn to Pay Your Dues

Perhaps the most valuable part of that clerk job was that it gave me perspective. I realized I should never be too proud to take on the most menial tasks. At every internship and entry-level job I had over the next five years, I never minded doing boring, often thankless tasks, like transcribing interviews or fact-checking, because I knew I could gain valuable knowledge and skills along the way. So far it's working out for me.

The 1 Thing That Gets Me Out of Bed Every Day

I'm a morning person. No, seriously. But, in addition to being a morning person, I'm also an anxious person. This basically means that before my feet even hit the floor every day, my mind is running rampant with an onslaught of thoughts; I think about possible scenarios I may encounter that day and every possible outcome, and I conjure up to-do lists in my head with an ambitious number of boxes that I then immediately worry won't get checked off. It's exhausting . . . enough to make me want to curl up and stay in bed forever, because I know the minute my feet do touch the floor, I'll have to put all those frantic thoughts into action.

Other people hate mornings with a fiery passion for different yet equally legitimate reasons; some need way more sleep than other people, some are night owls, some just genuinely do not function before 10 a.m. So basically, no matter what type of person you are, getting out of bed in the morning can actually be the worst.

I don't always/ever do all the amazing things you're supposed to do to get your life together in the morning, because I either don't have time or because I forget about how important good morning habits are since my head is too full of other stuff at the time. But I still manage to get up and get out of bed every day with a remarkable amount of enthusiasm, if I may say so myself. I do something very simple - and this thing pushes everything else out of my head so that I can focus on getting up and going forward.

I find one thing in the upcoming day to be really, truly excited about.

And then I hold on to it, tightly. Here's how to do it and why you should.

1. Make it something attainable.

This thing I think of isn't some ridiculous feat or a crazy goal I may not even be able to achieve. It's an easy thing, it's a comforting thing, and it's a sure thing. Some mornings I lay in bed thinking of the 20 minutes on the train to and from work that I'll have to finally, finally open my book and read. I think of sushi. I think of my ballet class. I think of squishing my cat with a hug she'll act like she doesn't want, but she does (she does!). I think of getting to work so that I can IM my co-worker about Harry Potter. Or, I think about watching Harry Potter after work that day. Seriously, anything Harry Potter-related will work for me.

2. Let it be your anchor.

The main point is, find that one thing to look forward to because it's like finding a light at the end of the tunnel during a bad day, or it's an extra bonus in a day that's already good. Let it be your anchor if and when you feel like everything else in that day is out of your control or not going the way you'd hoped.

3. Don't allow yourself to skip it.

If it's what got you out of bed, then it means it's important enough that you shouldn't let it fall through the cracks. Don't reschedule your happy moment for another day. It's something worth smiling about and cherishing, because no matter how small, it's something totally worth waking up for.

The entry way was dark. Papi's boots, the pair he wore whenever he did yard work, sat muddy and unlaced near the door. I heard none of the sounds I'd usually hear after school. No noise from the tele vi sion. No voices chattering in Spanish. No salsa blasting from the radio. I lowered my book bag to the floor next to my father's boots and noticed the light on in the kitchen. I darted toward it, my heart pounding with each pace.

"Mami!" I called out. "Papi! Are you here?"

I stood at the kitchen entrance and looked around. A plate of sliced plantains rested on the countertop; a pot of uncooked rice was on the stove's back burner. The faucet, which Papi had been trying to fix that week, leaked into the sink. Drip. Drip. Drip. On the table, that morning's newspaper laid next to a half-filled cup of coffee. Mami's apron, which she always folded and put away after preparing a meal, was dangling from a chair back. I pivoted to the hall and dashed to my parents' room. Could they be sleeping?

"Where is every one!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. "Mami, Papi - I'm home!" I pushed on their bedroom door. It was stuck. "Are you guys here?" I yelled, banging on the wood with my fists. "Open up!" When I didn't get a response, I wedged the toe of my Adidas into the door's lower right corner, leaned into it with my full weight to force it open, and stumbled in. The room was bare. Mami's address book was open atop her nightstand; Papi's reading glasses laid near the foot of their bed. With my entire body shaking, I rushed to the bathroom. Then into my room. Then back to the kitchen. And finally, with a prayer that they might be outdoors, into the backyard.

All empty.

Right then, the doorbell rang. I stopped. Could it be them? In the shadows of the hall, I tiptoed to the front of the house. At the door, I stretched up to look into the peephole. There stood the neighbor who lived on the other side of our two-family house, a squat middle-aged woman who hadn't ever been very friendly to us. Leaving the safety chain hooked, I opened the door only wide enough to see out.

"It's me, Diane," she said. "Unlock the door."

My hands quivered as I slid the chain left and unlatched it. With my face flushed and my stomach churning, I stepped into the vestibule. The woman stared at me like I had three eyes.

"Your parents have been taken," she said glibly, as if she was reporting the weather forecast.

"Um, what?" I blustered. My head felt like it was about to fall off my shoulders, tumble to the ground, and burst open right there in front of her. "What do you mean?"

"I mean the immigration officers came here and arrested them," she shot back. "They're gone."

I glared at her, all of a sudden feeling dizzy. The foyer began to spin, faster and faster, as if I was stuck in a washing machine. "No!" I wailed with my palms over my temples. I swayed forward, then back, and caught myself before falling onto the linoleum. "They're not gone!" I squealed. The woman didn't blink.

"Anyone you want me to call?" she asked. I was too distraught to answer. My moans turned to howls.

"Well," she said, realizing I wasn't going to respond, "let me know if you need anything, okay?" I didn't answer. I staggered into the house and slammed the door.

What am I going to do? My thoughts raced faster than my heartbeat. I need to call someone. I hurried to the living room and grabbed our cordless from its base. I dialed the number of my niece's mother, Gloria. Ring. Ring. Ring. She picked up.

"Hello, Gloria?" I whimpered.

She paused. "What's wrong, Diane?"

"My parents have been taken!" I shouted into the receiver. Hot tears escaped from my lids and splashed onto my T- shirt.

"What are you talking about?" she asked.

"The police came here and arrested them!" I hollered.

Dead silence.

Even in my hysteria, I was already trying to find a way to fix things - to line up a new life for myself. "Can I stay with you?" I asked between gasps. "Maybe you can move in here. I can watch Erica for you. I'll go to school and get a job."

She sighed. "Diane, that's not a good idea," she said. "I don't think it would work."

I heard what she said, but I couldn't quite comprehend what it meant for me. "So what am I supposed to do?" I sniveled.

"For now," she said, "don't open your door for anyone. We don't really know what's happening yet. The police might return there. Stay out of sight until we can figure something out."

Beyond terrified, I scurried back to the front door to be positive it was chained and bolted. I turned off every light, closed all the blinds, went into my room, and locked the door. With the cordless in hand, I got on the floor and scooted all the way under my bed. Our house had never felt more quiet or scary.

I cried as softly as I could, my dad's words reverberating in my head. "If anything ever happens to us," he'd often told me, "you've gotta be strong." But I didn't feel strong; I felt weak and abandoned. I put the phone's dial pad right up to my eyes so I could see the digits in the dark. I called another lifeline - Amelia, the mother of my friend Gabriela.

"Amelia?" I whispered.

She picked up on my distress. "What's going on, sweetie?" she asked.

In hushed tones, I told Amelia all that had happened, from my discovery that Mami and Papi were gone. "Where are you?" she asked. "Under my bed." "Stay where you are," she told me. "Don't move. I'll be there as soon as I can."

Minutes later, the phone rang; I saw Amelia's name on the caller ID and picked up on the first ring. "It's me, Diane," she said on her cell. "I'm here. You can let me in." At the door, I looked through the peep-hole to confirm it was Amelia and not the police. After opening the door, I fell right into her arms. Gaby was there too. "It's okay, Diane," she repeated as she stroked my hair. "Every thing's going to be fine now. Gaby, go make some tea."

The phone rang again. It was my father.

"Hector?" she said. "Yes, I'm here with Diane." I listened intently to Amelia's side of the conversation and pieced together how the day had unfolded. My parents had been taken separately. Mami, who'd been making dinner, was arrested in the late after noon while Papi was on his way home from work. My father pulled into the driveway to discover that the
immigration officers had surrounded the house; they were waiting to put him in handcuffs. Papi was driven to a facility for men, Mami to one for women. My father was allowed to make one short call. This was it.

Amelia, shaking her head in sorrow at what she'd heard, handed the phone to me. "Your father wants to speak to you," she said. I pressed the receiver to my ear.

"Papi," I said with a scratchy voice, "where are you?"

"Listen to me, Diane," he said sternly. "Don't be afraid. You're a smart girl." My eyes filled with a fresh round of tears. "Don't cry, Diane. Do not cry. Now I need you to pay attention," he continued, "because I don't have much longer on the phone. Go in our room and pack our suitcases, one for me and one for your mother. We'll need some of our things in Colombia."

"What?" I shrieked. Mami and Papi had been in prison for less than twenty-four hours, yet my father was convinced they'd be deported. "But can't we do something to stop this?" I pushed.

"There's nothing we can do," he said matter-of-factly. The only way he and Mami might have a chance at staying, he explained, was if a top-level attorney took their case; even with Papi's stroke of fortune, he didn't have the money for a pricey lawyer. "I've asked Amelia if you can stay with her," he told me. I heard a guard ordering Papi to finish his call. "So you'll be with her, okay? I love you. I've gotta go now." Click. We Didn't Realize Flip or Flop's Tarek and Christina Had So Much to Be Grateful For

Every Flip or Flop fan knows that Tarek and Christina El Moussa can turn even the most hopeless-seeming disaster into a profitable success, but they may not know that the HGTV couple's triumphant spirit extends beyond dilapidated homes to harrowing medical situations.

In 2013, registered nurse Ryan Read was tuning in to a Flip or Flop marathon when she noticed a suspicious lump on Tarek's throat. She sent the show's production company an email with her concerns, which prompted Tarek to get the lump checked out. It turned out that the lump, along with other ailments like a cough they had been attributing to Tarek's heavy smoking, was actually a symptom of stage 2 thyroid cancer. The parents of young daughter Taylor were scared but moved forward with signature determination.

Within a month, Tarek had his thyroid and lymph nodes removed and was undergoing iodine radiation. The treatments were not only unpleasant, they also derailed the couple's plans for a second child. Determined to grow their family, Christina underwent in vitro treatments. After one failed attempt and another that sadly ended in miscarriage, their son was conceived. "I had to do one full week in bed. For 13 weeks after that, I couldn't go for a walk and couldn't lift anything over a gallon of milk," Christina told People. "We did everything we could to make sure this one worked."

This August, nearly two years after the diagnosis and a year and a half of being cancer free, the couple welcomed baby Brayden James. We have no doubt the holidays will be extra meaningful in the El Moussa house this year.

  3. Cruciferous veggies: They're great foods for long-term weight loss, but if there's one time not to chow down on a heaping helping of broccoli, cabbage, or kale, it's right before you hit the beach! These veggies contain a complex sugar called raffinose that's known to cause some lovely bloat.
  4. Gum: Chewing on gum may seem harmless for your debloating cause, but it can actually cause your belly to swell. The reason makes sense: you're swallowing large amounts of air.
  5. Sugary mixed drinks: While rum runners and piña coladas are nearly synonymous with dreamy resort beaches, all that extra sugar is not helping your cause. Between natural sugars and the artificial sweeteners found in these cool drinks, the high levels of fructose can make you bloat.
  6. Dairy: If you've got any form of lactose intolerance, then avoid dairy before you hit the beach. Between gas, bloating, and other belly discomforts, it's your best bet just to say no.

When you're in your 20s, you pretty much have a "get out of jail free" card. It's somewhat implied that those years are there for making mistakes, learning from them, and bridging the gap between pre-adulthood and adulthood. So, when you "forget" to wash your sheets for five months or spend your whole paycheck on a pair of shoes, no one can really give you a hard time. But at some point, we all must brush the dust off our 401k packets and embrace that we are, after all, real adults. Here are some things to quit doing when 30 rolls around:

  1. Facebook stalking, particularly your ex.
  2. Seeking approval from other people.
  3. Beer pong. It's time to toss the red solo cups.
  4. Sleeping away your entire weekend instead of doing something fun or productive.
  5. Weeknight binge drinking (or binge drinking in general). Those hangovers get worse with each passing year.
