11 DIY Beauty Remedies Your Grandma Always Talked About That Actually Work

Every abuela has one: that wild concoction she whips up from ingredients in her kitchen and swears by every time you have a pimple, dry skin, unruly hair - you name it. As kids, most of us rolled our eyes and went along with it, but we've done a little digging, and it turns out maybe Grandma wasn't so crazy after all. Many of those beauty recipes actually work! Warning: do try these 11 practices at home for smooth skin and silky hair.

1. Using mayonnaise as a deep conditioner for healthy hair.

According to hairstylist Nathaniel Hawkins, this old-school method works because of the fat to protein ratio. "The oil softens the hair, making it shinier - and the protein in the eggs will make strands stronger." He recommends applying the treatment to dry hair, and leaving it on as a mask for 15-20 minutes. Shampoo twice, and condition afterwards. But, Hawkins notes, this treatment works best for hair that isn't fine or limp.

2. Dabbing nails in olive oil for a healthier look.

Nail expert Stephanie Stone debunked the myth (common in Dominican culture) that rubbing garlic on nails will make them strong (according to studies, it has no benefit). But, she says, applying olive oil (a popular DIY beauty ingredient in Puerto Rico) on nails and cuticles throughout the day is a great way to improve their health. "Keeping your hands and nails moisturized is key, especially if you're trying to repair damaged nail beds. I'd also recommend applying it lightly throughout the day instead of a full on soak. But consistency is key!"

3. Coconut oil as a body moisturizer.

"This one 100% works," says dermatologist (and Sofia Vergara's derm!) Dendy Engelman, M.D., of coconut oil for soft skin, a popular technique in many Latin American countries. "Coconut oil is mostly made up of saturated fats and medium-chain fatty acids, which help repair the skin barrier, trap water to hydrate skin, and also reduce inflammation. And recent studies show it's also a great treatment for eczema."

4. Adding honey to hair conditioner for softer tresses.

A custom common in Caribbean Latin America, honey is a natural moisturizer, which Hawkins says does work to help rehydrate your locks. And using unprocessed honey will give you an extra bonus: it's full of enzymes that will help create a healthy scalp and prevent dandruff.

5. Agua maravilla to fight blemishes.

Also known as witch hazel, this is common in many Latino families, especially from Puerto Rican and Dominican backgrounds. Engelman says it works because the mixture contains anti-inflammatory, astringent, and antibacterial properties. Engelman also recommends Dickinson's Original Witch Hazel Refreshingly Clean Towelettes ($6) to control blemishes and calm bug bites.

6. Washing hair with Coca-Cola for shine.

This is a long-time favorite technique among not just Latino families, but celebrities like Suki Waterhouse. Hairstylist Nunzio Saviano gives this traditional trick the thumbs up: "The acidity closes the hair cuticle, which makes it look healthy and shiny. But be careful: the sugar can leave your hair sticky, so you might need to rinse it out quickly. Apple cider vinegar is an alternative that might not be as messy!"

7. Beach sand as a skin exfoliant.

"Sand is essentially finely granulated rocks, so it's perfect to remove excess dry skin cells," Engelman says. "But because it's so abrasive, I'd only recommend you use it to exfoliate feet. It might be too harsh for other parts of your body."

8. Manzanilla grisi shampoo to lighten hair.

Saviano says that this traditionally Mexican and South American product - which contains Flor de Manzanilla and claims to both wash and lighten hair - does work, but he would use it sparingly. "This will maintain your tone and even lighten it at times, but if you use it too much, your color might become dull or even fade."

9. Grape skin paste for glowing skin.

Grapes are a gold mine, says Engelman. "They'll have a brightening effect over time because they contain vitamins B6, C, and A, and minerals like potassium, magnesium, selenium, and flavonoids, which act as antioxidants and remove toxins from the skin."

10. Sugar and lemon juice as an antiaging exfoliant.

According to Engelman, the sugar crystals act as an exfoliator, sloughing away dead skin, while the lemon juice helps peel away dead skin cells because of their content of alpha hydroxy acid (which is found in many antiaging treatments). Exfoliating is important, Engelman says, "because as we age, our skin doesn't shed as effectively. Plus, getting rid of dead cells helps your moisturizers penetrate better."

11. Avocado for healthy cuticles.

"Actually, rubbing avocado oil on cuticles is more effective than actual avocado," says Stone. But good news for avocado lovers: "Avocados in a healthy, balanced diet will help you see overall improvement in your hair, skin, and nails, too." Bring on the guacamole!

Take a Walk Down Memory Lane, All the Way to Selena Gomez's First Instagram Posts Ever

We were feeling a little nostalgic, so we decided to take a look back through one of our favorite Instagrams (and the most followed in the social media platform). You guessed it, we traveled way back into the depths of Selena Gomez's feed - why not, right?

In our dive into the "Kill Em With Kindness" singer's profile, we discovered a few things about her: she's always given her fans incredible access to her life, posting behind-the-scenes shots from photo shoots and rehearsals and even sharing private moments with friends. Her abs have always been rock hard and toned, and she has never been afraid of sexily showing them. And, finally, fame has not gotten to her one single tiny bit.

Selena's first post was not a photo, but a video announcing the beginning of her Stars Dance tour back in 2013, where we see her dance and sing with fans, family and her tour crew - it's really too cute and it reminds us of Selena's latest photos with awaiting fans outside her Revival tour. Talk about staying true to her roots. Scroll ahead to watch that first video and see more photos from when back when.

How Will Ramsay Die? Predicting the Villain's Inevitable End on Game of Thrones

There is one character above all that we want to see killed in a gloriously vicious way on Game of Thrones: Ramsay Snow (that's right, I called him Snow because I refuse to accept his status as a Bolton after what he did to that baby). For those of you who aren't familiar with Ramsay, he is one of many main characters on Game of Thrones, but not a nice one. He starts as Ramsay Snow, "Snow" being the name assigned to bastards in this world, but is later given the name of Bolton by his father. He is played by the outstanding Iwan Rheon, who is probably really cool and in no way similar to the character he portrays on the show. Knowing what horrible things Ramsay does in the show, how will the writers eventually kill that bastard in a way that could possibly feel adequate?

To consider that question, let's first look at some of the top ways he has killed or tortured others throughout the course of the show.

  1. He routinely hunts women. Ramsay is known to enjoy hunting women with his hounds, and early on in the show, we saw him doing just that.
  2. He tortures Theon Greyjoy. After toying with Theon, who admittedly may have deserved it after he turns against the Starks and kills two little boys, Ramsay cuts the skin off Theon's fingers and toes, plus some other (ahem) parts. He makes Theon his pet, his "Reek," and it's even enough to make us like Theon again, or at least want him to succeed long enough to help the good guys win.
  3. He stabs his own father. When he learns Roose has had a son with Walda, he stabs his father and takes over as Lord of Winterfell.
  4. He kills Walda Bolton and her baby. He watched the dogs tear into Walda and her baby (who was also Ramsay's brother) so that he could ensure there was no questioning him as Lord of Winterfell. This was perhaps the worst as far as parents are concerned.
  5. He murders Osha. He stabbed Osha in the throat when she was pretending to want to seduce him but meant to kill him.

Now that we've relived all those horrors, let's get back to the ways we could to see Ramsay die, because that's what is really exciting.

  1. Sansa's revenge. The show loves to make us suspect something is going to happen, for good or bad, only to yank it away at the last second. What if Ramsay is about to commit another atrocity, say he has captured Sansa again and he's about to kill her, when she pulls out a surprise dagger, cuts off his manhood, and then slits his throat.
  2. Jon Snow as savior. We could see a similar situation where everything's going wrong until Jon appears (like the hero he is) and saves the day. Perhaps he knocks Ramsay to the ground and Ghost (because the direwolves need more action) tears out his throat. This seems less likely, because we wouldn't have the justice element of Sansa doing the deed.
  3. The White Walkers. Consider Ramsay's arrogance, his close proximity to the Wall, and Bran's potential to allow the White Walkers to come south. The battle between the Starks and Ramsay could go horribly wrong until, at the right moment, the snows come in strong and we see the White Walkers. Well, Ramsay doesn't see them while the others run, and when he turns, it's too late. This would certainly be awesome but still a bit less exciting than Sansa bloodying her hands.
  4. A return of Theon. In many ways the only living person with as much of a right to vengeance as Sansa is Theon Greyjoy (some men might say more). However, Theon and his sister have run off to join Daenerys. Unless they turn back for some reason or hurry back with the dragon queen, this is unlikely. If it were to happen, Theon could revert to Reek momentarily and then burst out and kill Ramsay with his own butter knife when we least suspect it - or maybe jam one of those humongous sausages down his throat until he chokes on it.
  5. The dragon queen's arrival. The moment Stannis Baratheon rides upon Mance Rayder's camp is pretty amazing, and a moment like that with Ramsay getting owned by Daenerys and her Dothraki would be well worth watching. Imagine that punk getting his head bitten off by her dragon, Drogon. So good.
  6. The baby lives. What we'd really love is to see the Lord of Light bring Roose and Walda's baby back from the dead and then eat Ramsay in a way that reminds us of Chucky. Too soon for that? Yes, and it's the wrong genre but still would be awesome.

The Winner

It seems clear that the best option here is Sansa's revenge, but the show could come out with some equally amazing and way more unexpected way to kill off Ramsay. It would be a hard feat, as many of us will feel let down if she doesn't get to kill him. How would you like to see Ramsay's character killed?

20 Must-Make Recipes With Gochujang, the Korean Condiment That's Better Than Sriracha

Sriracha, shmiracha. Meet the hot-sauce alternative you've (maybe) never heard of but are going to want to put on everything: gochujang. It's a Korean paste made from red chili, rice, fermented soybeans, and salt, and you can find it in the Asian food aisle of most grocery stores. The spicy and supersavory condiment makes a mouthwatering addition to not only Asian dishes, but also basics like macaroni and cheese. In fact, it's one of Food Network host Sunny Anderson's best cooking tips. These 20 flavor-packed recipes will convince you that gochujang is the staple you'll always want to have on hand.

Why This Pop-Up Service May Replace Restaurants in the Coming Years

Just as Lyft and Uber have replaced taxis and Airbnb has diminished the demand for hotel rooms, Feastly might be the tech-savvy service that greatly impacts the restaurant industry. The site connects diners to pop-up dining experiences and gives chefs a platform (and even a physical space) to promote themselves and their uniquely themed dinners. I've heard about Feastly for a while, but when my friends started raving about it and chef friends started hosting dinners, I knew I had to check it out for myself. The cost, the quality of food, and the unexpected connections I made are just a few reasons I am now a Feastly convert, but read on to learn more about my full experience.

20 Times Rosé Made Your Life Better

Rosé has earned a bad rap - and that's something I quite frankly do not understand. First, it's so damn refreshing, especially on a sweltering day or evening. Second, you can usually score a great bottle for under $30, and let's not overlook the fact that Rosé makes a fine sangria. I'll go ahead and let Charles & Charles, makers of my favorite bottle of Rosé, sum up my thoughts exactly, "Yes, you can drink Rosé and still be badass."

What to Expect in Anthony Bourdain's Much-Anticipated Cookbook Appetites

While we await President Barack Obama's appearance in an upcoming episode of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, celebrity chef and host Anthony Bourdain's revealed a few tidbits of his much-anticipated cookbook to hold us over. Titled Appetites, the cookbook is set to release in late October this year, and the recipes are surprisingly simple, based on his Adweek interview.

His first cookbook in over a decade, Bourdain's Appetites takes it back to comforting family meals. "Meatloaf, macaroni and cheese, budae jjigae, the [Korean] army stew - stuff that makes me happy, that I crave, that I would try out on my daughter, that seems to work at home, but also some strategy of tactics," Bourdain told Adweek. "I love macaroni and cheese. I've always got some elbow macaroni around and some processed or not particularly good, easily meltable cheddar-like stuff that I can make macaroni and cheese with. I have a deep love for that."

As if we didn't have enough respect for the CNN host, this interview definitely didn't hurt. We're marking our calendars now to snag our copies of Bourdain's cookbook and heading to the store to grab some Velveeta, because Bourdain gives us permission to.

10 Moves + 10 Reps Each = The Defined Arms You've Always Wanted

Ten moves. 10 reps each. Sounds simple enough, but man, your arms will be toast after completing 100 reps without a rest. Modify this workout to fit your ability level by using two- to 10-pound dumbbells. Use the same size dumbbell for all 10 exercises (I used eight-pounders), or switch between lighter and heavier weights depending on the move. If this is still too hard, do five reps for each move instead of 10.

Beat the Summer Heat and Still Work Out

There really is no delicate way to put it: exercising on hot and humid 80-degree days pretty much sucks. Running, biking, hiking, and even walking all feel considerably harder in the heat, which is often amplified by the moisture in the air. Here are some tips to help you get through your sticky Summer workouts.

  • Be flexible about when you work out: Become obsessed with checking the weather, and find out when temps are going to be the lowest that day. Sometimes it's early in the morning, and sometimes late in the evening, so you'll need to rearrange your schedule to fit in exercise during the coolest time of day. A plus about morning workouts is many of your neighbors might be watering their lawns, so you can run through their sprinklers to stay even cooler.
  • Drink water all day, not just before or after your workout: Staying hydrated will help prevent some of the symptoms you may experience from exercising in heat such as dizziness, stomach cramps, and headaches. During your run, sip four to eight ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Take a cold shower: I know it seems a little odd to shower before a workout, but the cold water will cool you down. Leave your hair wet and pop it in a bun, so when you head outside water dripping down your face and neck will feel refreshing. If you have short hair, carry a water bottle with you and squeeze a little on top of your head whenever you need a little cooling boost.
  • Change up the type of workout to fit the temps: On super hot and humid days, choose cooler cardio activities like biking in the wind or swimming in cold water. Just remember to hydrate before you feel thirsty to beat the bonk.
  • Invest in some wicking gear: Lightweight, breathable, sweat-wicking clothes are a must. They pull moisture away from your skin, so you really do feel cooler. Wearing a hat to keep the hot sun off your head and face also helps. Or if you can get beyond the "lack of cool factor," try a visor to let your head breathe while keeping the sun off your face.
  • Exercise in cooler places: Hit the trails in shady woods or along a breezy beach shoreline. It can be 10 or more degrees cooler than the sunny streets in your neighborhood.
  • Shorten or split up your workouts: Summertime isn't the best time to push yourself, so if you can only handle 10 minutes at a time, do what you can, or exercise twice in one day.
  • Slow down your pace: If you're set on getting in a 30-minute workout, move with less intensity or do intervals to avoid overheating. Remember it's OK to take breaks too.
  • Head indoors: Now is a good time to take advantage of a monthly membership at an air-conditioned gym. Can't afford it? Burn calories by working out with a Class FitSugar video on your computer or iPhone, jumping rope, running up and down your stairs, or doing strength-training routines at home. If you need to get out, speed walk with the moms and grandmas in the mall.
  • Exercise in the rain: It's so exhilarating to feel a little sprinkle on your skin while out for a run or bike ride. If it's thundering and lightning, head home quick; you don't want to be out running in an electrical storm.

A Stuntwoman Totally Slayed American Ninja Warrior Dressed as Wonder Woman

Not all heroes wear capes, especially when they are competing on an extreme obstacle course. Jessie Graff is a professional stunt double who has worked on Iron Man 2, X-Men: First Class, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and a whole host of other action films. Earlier this week, she competed in LA to qualify for American Ninja Warrior . . . dressed as Wonder Woman.

While it's no small feat to even complete the course, she was also the first woman to finish the new obstacle course. Women have attempted and finished the obstacle course before, but Jessie is the first for this season. Still impressive. Jessie will move on to the next round, and we will certainly be keeping an eye out for her next costume.

You Might Lose Your Mind When You See What the Game of Thrones "Shame Nun" Looks Like IRL

One of the funniest things about Game of Thrones (of which there are few) is seeing how drastically different the cast looks when they take off their elaborate costumes and step into the real world. After seeing what the terrifying Night's King looks like without all of that icy CGI (spoiler alert: a very normal dude), we didn't think it was possible to be shocked any further. Then, because there's nothing Game of Thrones loves more than exceeding our expectations, we discovered that Septa Unella's (aka the "Shame Nun") real-life counterpart is basically a goddess IRL, and our eyes opened so wide they fell out of their sockets and onto the floor.

The Complicated, Interconnected History of The Bachelor Franchise

The Bachelor and Bachelorette franchises may have started out as random singles just looking for love the old-fashioned way, but after 20 seasons, it's become a much more complicated web of interconnectedness. For a time, certain Bachelors were chosen out of the blue for their appeal, but the franchise producers soon discovered that they could get a built-in audience by casting runners-up and fan favorites from previous seasons. But after this many years, it's easy to forget who was almost chosen by who, so we're breaking down which Bachelors and Bachelorettes landed their position of rose-giving by being an ousted contestant first. Starting from the very first bachelor, Alex, to the current bachelorette, JoJo, here's how each season has ultimately led to the next.

There's a New Horror Film on Netflix That Will Leave You Reeling

Netflix seems to have hit quite the sweet spot when it comes to the horror genre. Not only are there are plenty of exceptional scary flicks in the catalog, but recent months have yielded new arrivals packed with seriously good scares. Back in April, we got a dose of fresh terror from Hush, a cabin-in-the-woods feature with a deaf and mute heroine. May yielded six notable horror additions, and among them was a creepy new film called They Look Like People. The title alone is enough to draw some serious intrigue, but is the movie actually worth a watch? Let's break it down.

  1. The story is simple. Christian is just your average nice guy. He's trying to empower himself with confidence so he can kick more ass and maybe win the affection of his boss, Mara. An old friend, Wyatt, shows quite arbitrarily and asks to crash for a few days. The thing is, Wyatt has come to suspect that the world population is under siege and everyone around him is turning into a monster.
  2. The premise is terrifying. So, a little more on Wyatt's story. He - for quite some time, it seems - has been receiving late-night phone calls warning him of the impending end of the world. The monsters who are infiltrating society look like people, but they're not. Wyatt has a special sensitivity to these unearthly creatures; he can sense when someone has "turned." His goal is to save himself (and his friend Christian) before everything falls apart.
  3. The tension is unbearable. If the premise wasn't unsettling enough, a few sequences in the movie will have you crawling out of your skin. For one, Wyatt's disturbing dream sequences weave a consistent thread throughout the film, and let's just say his nightmares are enough to give you nightmares. In another scene, he contemplates suicide . . . with a nail gun. And of course, the ending will have you biting off each and every one of your fingernails. It's almost unendurable.
  4. The ending is ambiguous. Without giving too much away - though we're sure you can kind of figure out what happens - the ending is really, really up to interpretation. You can argue either side until the sun comes up, but you can't definitively say what really happens. That's kind of the beauty of the film and maybe the most horrifying part. Not knowing for sure is perfect and disturbing, all at once.

13 Great Romantic Comedies to Stream on Netflix

It's no secret that the last few years have been a bleak time for romantic comedies, though 2016 is bringing some new hopefuls to the genre. To help matters, I've picked out a handful of great romantic comedies that you can stream on Netflix - movies that are either old favorites, gems you may have never seen, or semirecent movies you missed for whatever reason. 10 Sweet Photos of Drew Barrymore and Her Adorable Daughters

Drew Barrymore has been a Hollywood mainstay since she was a baby - and has seemed to live about a million lives since then - which is why it's so heartwarming to see her settle into the role of mother. Drew married art adviser Will Kopelman in June 2012, three months before the couple welcomed their first daughter, Olive. Their second baby girl, Frankie, was born in April 2014, and the little ones quickly started to bear a resemblance to their famous mom - seriously, Olive is almost identical to a young Drew in her E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial days.

While Drew and Will have since split, the actress has given us a few peeks at Frankie and Olive on social media, at charity events, and in People magazine. We've rounded up some of Drew's most adorable moments with her kids; keep reading to see them all now, then check out our recent interview with her, where she talks life, love, and Rosé.
