The 1 Fandom Term You NEED to Know
To pull for a pair so hard it hurts. To hold out hope for a fictional couple's love even when it goes against all odds. To create a relationship that may not be real, but it feels like it should be. To believe that it could become canon if you send really intense vibes to the writers. To ship.
My first experience with shipping was circa 1999. I was in fifth grade, and I was sneaking episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer while my parents were out. The episode was "Something Blue" and mortal enemies Buffy and Spike - due to a magic spell gone awry - were suddenly making out all over the place and planning their nuptials. Oh, I found myself unexpectedly thinking. Yes to THIS. Thus, my Spuffy ship set sail, and 17 years later, I am still aboard it.
Ship, as in, I will go down with. The word comes from "relationship," but I've found over the years the nautical metaphors are really quite numerous. Often (but not always), ships are unrealistic relationship pairings that fans will never see come to fruition. The unattainability of it is kind of part of the draw. Other ships that stir the deepest of emotions are ones based on unrequited love, ones that cross barriers of the characters' canon sexual preferences, or the ones that are so wrong they are just right.
There is nothing more rewarding than a ship "pulling a Spuffy" and actually forming (based, I'd like to think, on sheer force of will from the fanbase). Imagine getting taunted with a piece of something tasty and having the idea of it dangling in front of you for years while you drool all over the place like a damn fool. Then, one day, you're blessed with a tiny morsel - a kiss, a lingering glance, or even the smallest innuendo to indicate that your waiting wasn't all in vain. The flame of your simmering fandom fire is relit with vigor, and you know then you're in for the long haul with this one. Your OTP (one true pairing) might just happen after all.
What's almost as rewarding is when writers go SUPER meta on fans and make references in the actual show, book series, movie, etc., to the ships they know exist within fandoms, as an awesome nod to those of us pulling for our favorite people. Case in point: a Supernatural episode in season 10 called "Fan Fiction," which makes references to the sexual chemistry between characters Dean and Castiel, which will go down in history as the day Destiel shippers everywhere died of pure happiness/laughter/joy.
Ships can also be "real" people - just ask One Direction fans about "Larry Stylinson." They can also be really out there - Harry Potter fans who follow the Drapple ship or those knowledgable about Wincest (Dean and Sam Winchester aka two brothers aka incest) know what I'm talking about here. You can also ship characters who really are together in a fandom. For instance, I ship Damon and Elena from The Vampire Diaries, and they are (more or less/kind of sometimes) together. I also ship Rowaelin (Throne of Glass series), Dramione (Harry Potter series), Clace and Malec and Wessa (The Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series) . . . seriously my list of ships goes on and if someone doesn't stop me I will literally talk about it all day and forever.
So in short, a ship is a romantic relationship beloved by fans (or, fine, a type of watercraft with the ability to sail). But for fans, a ship is an emotional roller coaster, it's the reason we read or watch something, it's the source of our fan fiction, our fan art, our hours of discussions on Tumblr. It's a verb, it's a noun, it's a lifestyle. It's often the heartbeat of a fandom, the thing that drives our passion and makes us love the fandom even more. Shipping is fun; shipping hurts; shipping is emotional; shipping is part of what turns fans into fanatics. And I proudly will go down with all of mine.

You know In-N-Out is undeniably delicious; you know to order animal style and a Neapolitan shake; you know other fast food restaurants aren't quite as good . . . but you may not know these 11 facts that may make you see the burger chain in a whole new light.
- The very first In-N-Out opened in 1948 in Baldwin Park, CA, (east of Los Angeles) by husband-and-wife team Harry and Esther Snyder. From the beginning, there was an emphasis in fresh ingredients and food made by hand.
- Curious to know what the first In-N-Out drive-through-only restaurant looked like? A replica exists in Baldwin Park, CA, and it's open for viewing and photos Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- You know that two-way speaker box you use in drive-throughs? Yeah, Harry invented that in his garage.
- The logo basically has not changed since 1954. According to In-N-Out employees, the yellow arrow "points to pride."
- Animal-style burgers have been around since 1961 and Double-Doubles since 1963.
- Most In-N-Out locations have palm trees planted in front as a nod to founder Harry Snyder's favorite movie, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.
- Shakes weren't added to the menu until 1975. They used to be mixed right in the paper cups.
- Did you know you could buy an In-N-Out shirt at the restaurant? Well, you can, plus a ton more swag online.
- There's an In-N-Out University! It's for managers from all locations to come in and receive training on how to offer the best In-N-Out experience for their customers.
- The business is still family owned and operated. The founders' granddaughter Lynsi is currently leading the company.
- As of 2016, there are 313 In-N-Out locations, compared to 66 Shake Shacks and 36,000 McDonald's.

Shocking Police Cam Video Shows What It Took to Save a Toddler Trapped in a Hot Car
The idea of a toddler being trapped in a hot car is upsetting enough, but when the desperate attempts to save a child are caught on a police body camera, the terrifying experience is made far more real.
When Utah mom Alma Zamarripa discovered that her 6-year-old son accidentally locked her 18-month-old daughter in the family's car - with the keys inside - she acted quickly by calling 911 and urging her daughter to unlock the door.
"I kept telling her in Spanish to click the buttons, to pull on the knob, and she wouldn't, she couldn't capture it, she's never tried to open a door," Zamarripa told Fox 13 News immediately following the incident yesterday.
When police officer Matt Woods arrived - with his body camera recording - 15 minutes had already passed, and although it was only 78 degrees outside, it was closer to 100 degrees inside the vehicle.
"The child was screaming and crying," said Woods. "She was sweating profusely, she looked to the point where she was getting endangered there."
They had two options: wait for another officer to arrive with a lockbox or break the window.
Zamarripa didn't hesitate: she gave Woods a hammer.
The gripping body cam footage shows his attempts - at least six powerful swings into the shatterproof glass - before he finally broke through. Woods cut his fingers when reaching through the jagged glass, but his first priority was removing the toddler.
After she was placed in her mother's arms, they stood in the shade with water until paramedics arrived to determine that she was going to be fine.

Whoa: This Harry Potter Theory Could've Changed the Series Completely
Get ready to breathe in and breathe out, Harry Potter fans - a recent theory is sparking up a conversation on the Internet on how the entire series could've changed. The single theory is based on one passage in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, involving the most underrated Hogwarts house - Slytherin.
The speculation, outlined by Tumblr user crazybutperfectlysane, discusses the idea of Cassius Warrington of Slytherin being chosen to compete in the Triwizard Tournament instead of Cedric Diggory. Both characters would still continue to help each other throughout the book up until the very end, when Voldermort still decides to kill Warrington. The user discusses the possibility that this might've united the Slytherins against Voldemort so they could have fought against him in the Battle of Hogwarts. Pretty crazy right? The entire post is below.
However, the theory train didn't stop here. Another user, aplatonicjacuzzi, took it upon themselves to delve deeper into what Warrington's death would mean to Slytherin, Hogwarts, and Harry. This would include Slytherins realizing that pure bloods aren't safe from Voldemort, joining Dumbledore's Army, and eventually facing off against He Who Must Not Be Named at last. The rest of the imagined storyline is below.
These two posts are currently circling the Internet, even though both are two months old. It makes sense - it's serving up the right amount of fresh "what if?" options we always need every few months. We can't imagine how different the stories of all our favorite characters would be like or how Harry Potter could have had different kinds of support at Hogwarts. Guess that's all we can do now: wonder how and what could change the story we love and treasure so much.

Bye, Emoji! You'll Soon Be Obsessed With #Stickers on Twitter
Your Twitter feed is about to get more colorful. The company announced on Monday that users will soon be able to add fun, emoji-like stickers to their photos. Similar to how you can place emoji on your snaps, Twitter offers hundreds of stickers and images you can tack on your photos.
The coolest concept that comes with this #Sticker rollout, however, is that they're searchable. After you tweet a photo with stickers on it, anyone can look up the photo if they also used that same sticker - kind of like a hashtag. According to Twitter's blog, tapping on the sticker will then take you to a new timeline, where you can see how others used that sticker.
This new sticker-hashtag feature will be available for both iOS and Android users in the next few weeks. Until then, check out how it works here.

This Will Make You Rethink Everything You Thought About Petunia Dursley
Petunia Dursley was no angel. In fact, she was really quite terrible. She was at best negligent of a helpless child and, at worst, cruel to him. Harry Potter committed no crime save being related to Aunt Petunia's sister, and Lily committed no crime (that we know of), save being a witch. Whereas Vernon and Dudley's treatment of Harry can be attributed to their bigotry, ignorance, and fear of what they don't understand, Petunia's most definitely runs deeper. She was left behind by a sister she loved and isolated from a life and world she could never be a part of. And then, from her perspective, the people who took Lily away were also responsible for her death.
So her feelings toward Harry Potter were understandably conflicted - although this by no means justifies her terrible treatment of an orphan boy who needed a mother figure. But a moment in Goblet of Fire sheds light on a side of Petunia we hadn't really seen up until that point from the overindulging mother of a very, very spoiled child. In a moment of perceived danger, her maternal instincts kick in and her selfishness flies out the window faster than a speeding Bludger. A recent Reddit thread described the situation perfectly:
In the beginning of the book, there is a chapter where Mr. Weasley, the twins, and Ron arrive by floo powder at the Dursley's house to collect Harry. It's a funny chapter that really underscores the differences between wizards and the Dursleys, especially with Arthur vs. Vernon, but I was struck by the Dursley's bravery.
At first, Vernon shields Petunia and Dudley with his body while talking to the Weasleys, which is brave in and of itself, given how he feels about wizards. However, the scene that made me have to turn off the book and think for a minute happened after Ron and the twins had left. The twins had left behind the ton-tongue toffee, which Dudley had eaten, which forced his tongue to grow. Arthur steps towards him with a raised wand, saying he can fix it - as readers, we know he would never hurt Dudley, but the Dursleys don't have that insight.
Petunia and Vernon loathe wizards and are terrified of them. In this scene, this complete stranger, this wizard, has blasted apart their fireplace without a second thought, demonstrating a great deal of potentially destructive power. He steps forward toward Dudley, wand raised. Petunia immediately throws herself across Dudley, shielding him from what she perceives to be malicious intent, exactly like Lily shielded Harry from Voldemort.
It was a small detail, a single line in the book, but it blew me away. She may not be a likeable character, and is of course awful towards Harry, but in this moment she was remarkably selfless and brave in the perceived face of death or serious harm.
Does Petunia deserve a little more sympathy and understanding? Nothing excuses the way she treated Harry, but from her perspective, she's seen the bad side of magic more frequently than the good - which explains why she so adamantly wants to stamp it out of her nephew.
And don't forget the most important point of of all: when Petunia received the Howler from Dumbledore in Half-Blood Prince, she (for once) defied Vernon and absolutely insisted Harry be allowed to stay at Four Privet Drive. She knew doing so might very well be saving his life, the same way allowing him to come back each Summer protected it. She never wanted Harry dead; she simply did not want the daily reminder of a dead sister and her own guilt over their unresolved relationship.
Then, in her final goodbye to Harry, although she can't bring herself to show any love toward him, she does the only thing she can do:
"Aunt Petunia, whose face had been buried in her handkerchief, looked around at the sound. She did not seem to have expected to find herself alone with Harry. Hastily stowing her wet handkerchief into her pocket, she said, 'Well - good-bye,' and marched toward the door without looking at him.
'Good-bye,' said Harry.
She stopped and looked back. For a moment Harry had the strangest feeling that she wanted to say something to him. She gave him an odd, tremulous look and seemed to teeter on the edge of speech, but then, with a little jerk of her head, she bustled out of the room after her husband and son."
She is not a character with some heart of gold buried beneath her facade, and she isn't even someone I'd say is redeemable (like Severus Snape, for instance). She has no love for Harry. She's someone with a difficult past, who was put in a hard situation and who responded to that in the wrong way. Sadly, she never really allowed herself the chance to make it right. One has to hope that her son, Dudley, with his final handshake and moving goodbye to Harry, one day decided to have the courage that the other Dursleys didn't - to become a better person than he was raised to be.

A Husband Made a Lego Dress Out of 12,000 Pieces, and the Result Is NUTS
If you think you've seen the biggest Lego fan ever, think again. A very talented husband and devotee of Legos made a dress and purse out of a whopping 12,000 pieces.
The mastermind behind the two creations is Brian D'Agostine, also knows as Dag's Bricks in the Lego community. He created the "Little Black Dress" for Bricks Cascade, a yearly Lego convention and exposition. At this event, adult fans of Legos (AFoL) came together to show their own creations as well as build fun, unique Lego objects. For D'Agostine, it meant using 12,000 pieces to make an epic two-part dress.
As D'Agostine strolled around the event with his wife, they were constantly asked if it was actually Legos - and if it was comfortable (the verdict is that it's "relatively" comfortable). Their most popular fans were teen girls, older women, and a few men who were extremely courteous. "Many of the guys were reasonable enough to ask first before snapping photos or feeling the dress," D'Agostine said. To top it all, D'Agostine made a Lego bow tie, belt, and glasses to match.
For now, the two don't have any plans to show off the dress nationally. It might appear in a local shop and Lego store, but no other requests have been made. Check out the photos of the dress and bow tie ensemble - they'll astound you.

You Can Now Order Chorizo at Chipotle, but Is It Worth Going Crazy Over?
While other large food chains seem to add new and unexpected items to their menu rather frequently, Chipotle is quite the opposite. The Mexican food chain has maintained and established its cult of devoted customers on a menu that has undergone very little change over the years, which is why we were pleasantly surprised when Chipotle announced that it would be rolling out the Mexican classic chorizo to its fixed menu offering at select locations.
Chorizo is a Spanish pork and chicken sausage blend that is typically used in a variety of Mexican dishes. The meat has the common texture of a sausage link with a natural kick of spiciness. I've long been a fan of the spicy meat since childhood after sampling it in breakfast scrambles and with homemade mac and cheese. So when I was given the option to marry it with my favorite Chipotle ingredients, I was especially inclined.
I had the opportunity to get a firsthand bite of the new item alongside Chipotle's culinary manager Nate Appleman. The chefs cooked up the chorizo and served it fresh off the stove top to me (chorizo is best when served and consumed hot!). Before my initial taste, Nate suggested that when eating chorizo, less is more, so my first bite was chorizo over white rice with a sprinkle of cheese.
At first nip, the immediate flavors of paprika and other roasted seasonings were present and the meat had a slight crunchiness on the outside, but it was still pleasantly tender on the inside and easy to digest. In comparison to previous dishes containing the ingredient, I expected the chorizo bits to be insanely spicy. This blend, however, won't leave your mouth with a pungent burn; instead, it presents a nice kick of heat. But while the meat shouldn't frighten those sensitive to spicy flavors, it did lean toward the salty side.
I was also able to try the sausage in place of my typical chicken taco with more diverse ingredient options. This time, I went for a soft-shell taco with chorizo, lettuce, pico de gallo, and a sprinkle of cheese. Once I bit into the taco, a slight salty tang was still present, but a lot less distinct - which I believe was due to the fresh presence of lettuce and tomato in my bite. While I do agree with the suggestion of keeping your condiments simple when opting for chorizo, I think the watery crunch of lettuce serves as a pleasant contrast in flavor, and makes it taste a lot less salty.
My ultimate thought after sampling the chorizo is that while it is full of flavor, to some it may be overwhelmingly salty. While you might want to double up on meat in your average Chipotle meal, a little chorizo goes a long way.

The Most Dangerous Sunscreens For Kids (and They're Probably Hiding in Your Beach Bag)
Along with wearing sunglasses and hats, sunscreen should always be a part of your family's Summer routine - but is the sunscreen in your beach bag right now actually safe? Healthy Child released a list of the 13 sunscreens with the worst EWG ratings for 2016 to alert parents.
The sunscreens that made the list have potentially harmful chemicals - oxybenzone (which can disrupt the hormone system) and retinyl palmitate (which may actually trigger skin damage on sun-exposed skin) - and high SPFs that don't actually do any more to protect your child than an SPF 30-50. Additionally, two formulas come in a spray that won't completely cover your little one's skin and could be inhaled into their lungs.
If any of these are in your arsenal, toss them and opt for one of these safe sunscreens instead.

Alexander Skarsgard's Intense Diet For His Tarzan Role Will Shock You
The newly released film The Legend of Tarzan equally features star Alexander Skarsgard and his insane eight-pack. But it wasn't easy bulking up and adding on 25 pounds. In addition to heavy lifting, the 39-year-old actor had to triple his calorie intake to 7,000 calories per day - what?!
His friend and trainer-nutritionist, Magnus Lygdbäck, helped him whip into shape at 4:30 a.m. every morning. When shooting began, Alexander's strict diet was removed of sugar, gluten, wheat, dairy, and alcohol. He ate six small meals throughout the day in between his two workouts. He clearly missed even the little things he was prohibited from eating, according to his costar Margot Robbie. "I remember the day that he was allowed an apple, and he kissed the apple," she told Entertainment Weekly. "It hit me how deprived you are if you're that excited to see a piece of fruit."
As soon as filming came to a wrap, Alexander did what any of us would do after grueling months of dieting.
"I spent four days just in bed, being fed by Dad," he told EW. "He cooked these pastas with rich sauces and bone marrow and fried mozzarella and tons of beer and wine. It was the most incredible weekend of my life."

8 Hands of the King (or Queen) on Game of Thrones
Being the Hand of the King (or Queen) on Game of Thrones is a double-edged sword. They have almost all of the power and influence of the king but get little of the recognition. The Hand is the king or queen's most trusted adviser and can even act on behalf of the ruler. As a result, the Hand often gets stuck with a lot of responsibility and work that the ruler doesn't have time for (or doesn't want to deal with). It also means that a particularly power-hungry Hand could influence events far more than people realize.
Over the course of the six seasons, we've seen a lot of Hands come and go (and a lot of rulers too). But just who exactly has shouldered the responsibility of second most powerful person in the Seven Kingdoms?
