Forget Apples! Why You Should Be Eating a Pear a Day
While apples get a lot of attention for their health benefits, pears should not be overlooked. The soft, sweet, buttery flesh of the pear makes this Fall fruit perfect for enjoying fresh or for using in healthy recipes, like these edamame and pear crostinis or this pear berry smoothie. Plus, there are so many varieties to choose from - Bartlett, Bosc, and Anjou - that they each seem like a different fruit. These juicy gems are pretty healthy for you, too.
- Pears are one of the highest-fiber fruits, offering six grams per medium-sized fruit, helping you meet your daily requirement of 25 to 30 grams. Filling up on fiber keeps you regular to prevent a bloated belly caused by constipation, which also helps prevent colon cancer. A diet high in fiber can also keep your cholesterol levels down, which is good news for your ticker. Getting your fill of fiber from fruit is also linked to a reduced risk of breast cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.
- Pears contain a fair amount of vitamins C, K, B2, B3, and B6. For expecting or nursing moms, they also contain folate. Pears aren't too shabby in the mineral department either, containing calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper, and manganese. Vitamin C and copper are antioxidant nutrients, so eating pears is good for your immune system and may help prevent cancer.
- Pears also contain boron, which our bodies need in order to retain calcium, so this fruit can also be linked to prevention of osteoporosis.
- The phytonutrients found in pears are also associated with preventing stomach cancer.
- It's a hypoallergenic fruit, which means those with food sensitivities can usually eat pears with no adverse effects.
- Eating three or more servings of fruits a day, such as pears, may also lower your risk of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), the primary cause of vision loss in older adults.
- Quercetin is another antioxidant found in the skin of pears. It's beneficial for cancer prevention and can help reduce blood pressure, so don't peel your pears!
Using These Halloween Makeup Products Could Result in a Nightmarish Breakout
As a woman who loves Halloween more than Christmas, my skin has seen its fair share of horrifying moments. From prosthetics to cream makeup and everything in between, if it helps create the character I'm going for, I'm probably going to use it. But that doesn't mean my skin stops being scary after I remove the cosmetics.
I buy professional-grade theatrical makeup that is made to be safe for the skin. But it's hard to avoid picking up that paint set at your local drugstore when it's only $6, right? The thing is, it could actually be terrible for your - or your child's - skin.
Asia Vereline, master esthetician and general manager at Joanna Vargas Salon Los Angeles,
and celebrity esthetician Biba de Sousa explain how your Halloween makeup look can wreak havoc on your skin along with some alternatives to try instead. And if you still need makeup inspiration, check out our gallery of easy Halloween tutorials.
Cream Pigment
Those packs from the drugstore may be cheap, but consider how long they might have been in the warehouse. "Since it's a strictly seasonal item, it probably sits on the shelves at the Halloween headquarters for few years, and no one questions it," said Biba. They also have very little pigment, so you might not get the payoff you're expecting, either.
"They are baked on a low temperature and have low-grade ingredients that melt, and those ingredients will irritate the skin," she added. "So it's a double losing situation: the special-effect makeup not only looks bad, but it also disappears or gets misshaped quickly and stings and burns the skin."
Asia agreed when it comes to the ingredients. "Most Halloween makeup from the drugstore can have added colors that are not FDA-approved and waxes and oils that can clog your pores."
In addition to checking the FDA website to make sure the ingredients are safe, test a patch of makeup on your wrist or behind you ear to gauge if you'll react adversely or not. When it comes to picking a good cream, Biba suggested Kryolan Professional Make-Up, which is noncomedogenic; according to Asia, you can also use a primer to act as a barrier between the product and your skin.
Glitter
Glitter can go from zero to 60 real quick. It may seem obvious, but always go for cosmetic glitter, because it's made for your face. Craft glitter is pretty, but oftentimes the particles are large and sharp, which doesn't bode well if it ends up in your eye.
With the right glitter, Asia said the easy way to apply it to your face or body is to mix it with a bit of coconut oil or aloe vera, both of which are good for the skin. However, if you're putting glitter over water-activated makeup, you might want to skip the oil.
Fake Blood
Fake blood can be extremely irritating to the skin on top of staining everything. The last thing you want to do is attend a party and leave behind a bloody hand print that can't be removed! Instead, make your own fake blood. "It's better than the petroleum-based fake blood at the stores, which will definitely clog your pores," said Asia.
If you want to DIY fake blood for clothes, one option is to mix a red pigment with dish soap. This will help lift the color out of the costume if you plan on wearing it again (and not destroying it!). For the face, corn syrup and a cut of old red lipstick will do the trick. Try this nifty toothbrush trick to get the perfect splatter.

An iPhone 7 Exploded and Destroyed a Man's Car in the Process
An iPhone 7 caught fire inside a man's car - destroying the vehicle and raising concerns over the phone's battery. The event happened in Australia and Apple is looking into the issue.
The phone, owned by surf instructor Mat Jones, was left in his car, under a pile of clothes. When Jones came back after taking a lesson, he found his car filled with smoke and the phone "melting inside of [the clothes]," Jones told 7News. Jones further told 7News that he's only had the phone for a week - and did not use a "foreign charger" with it.
Apple is looking into the incident, reports 7News. The incident is troubling considering Samsung needed to recall its entire Note 7 line after numerous reports of the phone exploding and catching fire due to a battery issue. Hopefully, this is an isolated iPhone 7 event.
This Theory About Neville Longbottom's Wand Explains Everything About Him
When we first meet Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter books, it's clear that he isn't that bright or great with his wand and magic. He constantly forgets items, manages to make a mess out of spells and potions, and is perceived as someone who is on the edge of being a squib. However, an old theory going viral on Imgur suggests that it's not Neville's fault at all, but rather his wand.
The theory, originally posted in 2004 by Soggy Old Coot on the Harry Potter Theory blogspot, explores the background of Neville's wand. As we all know, the wand chooses the wizard, and if you don't win a wand or buy a new one, it won't respond to the new owner in the proper manner. These laws of wands apply to Neville as well. His wand isn't his own, but his father's, meaning his trouble with magic might be because of this law of wands.
The story about Neville and his wand goes on further to connect it to Neville living under his father's shadow. No one thinks he's as good as his dad, and people take great pains to remind him of it. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Neville says, "Gran's always telling Professor Marchbanks I'm not as good as my dad . . . " Of course, later in the book, Neville's wand breaks in the Department of Mysteries, and he starts to become more apt at using his new wand that chose him.
All of this means that Neville is definitely capable of magic and using a wand correctly. "Hence, it is only logical to assume that in ideal conditions, Neville is just as talented as Harry," writes Soggy Old Coot. "We have proof of this in that every instance in which Neville has demonstrated his potential or existing abilities has been in relation to Defense Against the Dark Arts, excepting his talents with herbology, which match those of Harry's at athletics." The books after Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix go on to show this, especially in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, where Neville manages to help win the war and make Voldemort vulnerable by killing Nagini.
Oh Neville, you're the wizard we should've had more faith in!

The 1 Change This Woman Made to Drop Those Last 10 Pounds
The struggle to lose weight is very real, so you'll completely relate to Wendy Mehaffey's story. This 37-year-old chiropractor and mother of two was fed up with carrying around that extra 10 pounds. She had tried losing the weight before, but what she was doing wasn't making a big enough impact. Here's how she finally did something about it.
Wendy: Before
POPSUGAR: What was your daily diet like? Any off-limits foods? Was it different on the weekend?
Wendy Mehaffey: I always felt like I made healthy choices for the majority of my meals. I stay away from soda and sweets. My downfall comes in the form of bagels/breads/rice. I am a carbavore, and that's always been something I've had to work at. I would treat myself to Starbucks two to three times a week for a latte, too! However, my main issue was portion control. I would eat more than I should, going back for a little extra on most occasions. I never restricted any foods from my diet and believe in moderation. But it doesn't matter when you're eating two servings at each meal how healthy it is. It still adds up.
Now, I stick very tightly to portioning out my meals. Every meal goes into my portion containers (the same ones from the 21-Day Fix). I felt the most confident when I measured out my lunches and dinners. I preplanned each meal, as to not make bad/wrong choices when I was hungry and needing something quick on the fly. This made it a foolproof plan. I was extremely strict six days per week. On the seventh day, I allowed myself a cheat day. This way, I didn't feel like I was missing out on anything that I may have craved (similar to the Body For Life). Here's an example of a typical day's meal plan:
Breakfast: Three egg whites, one egg, three pieces of turkey sausage
Snack: Protein shake (GNC natural whey protein powder natural chocolate flavor mixed with water) and a piece of fruit
Lunch: Broiled veggies (a mix of broccoli, squash, green beans, zucchini, onions, mushrooms) with either grilled chicken or ground turkey
Snack: Zone Perfect Protein bar (all-time fave is Chocolate Mint) and 10 to 12 nuts
Dinner: Grilled turkey burger (no bun) on salad or grilled chicken with steamed veggies, and occasionally wine or beer
When I would get a sweet craving, I would have a strawberry. Works like a charm!
PS: What was your workout schedule?
WM: I love running, and I play ice hockey. I typically maintain 15 to 18 miles per week. When the Spring approached, I increased mileage since I've always been a fair-weather runner. By this Summer, I was up to 30 miles per week, which was also a big help. I have a great neighborhood filled with moms who love to run. One of my neighbors suggested we start running together at 6 a.m. a few times a week [that was me, BTW!]. It's been fantastic! Very motivational to know there is someone waiting for you to run with. You can't let them down so you drag yourself there, and when you're done, you feel great! It was an easy way to boost my mileage and get my workouts in without taking away from my family and work responsibilities.
Wendy: After
PS: How long did it take you to lose the weight?
WM: I decided to start with the portion control and clean eating about four months ago. It took me about 2.5 months to lose 10 pounds (I've lost 20 in total).
PS: How did you stay motivated? Did you have a goal?
WM: There are two things that have kept me motivated. One is a post from a friend on Facebook. She said something to the effect of, "I'm sick of not giving things 100 percent." This resonated with me. I would always make excuses of why I would not wake up early to work out. I went to bed late, or my kids were up all night, or a million other excuses. I wasn't even giving it 50 percent! I was just full of excuses. They all sounded so legitimate at the time. Also, another friend said something to me that has also stuck. I hear it every time I'm feeling weak and wanting some food that might take me off track. He told me, "I think you look great, but you must not be serious about losing weight if you're not doing what it takes to lose it." That has been huge for my motivation. I completely agree with it! It's not easy, but it's worth the way I feel to forgo the extra scoop of dinner. My goal was to feel and look like the mom I always envisioned I would be. I am finally there!
Wendy: After
PS: How are you maintaining your weight?
WM: I still use the measuring cups to portion out my food. I feel like if I didn't, portions would be getting a little larger and a little larger and I would run into the same problem again of overeating portion sizes. So this way I know that I don't have to question myself. I still stay away from carbs at lunch and dinner, but I have added back in a few more calories. I will put avocado and cheese on my salad, and I have added in nuts with my afternoon snack. And I still incorporate my cheat day.
PS: Any advice for other women trying to drop those last 10 pounds?
WM: We all have a bunch of excuses that all seem so real in our heads. We don't have the time, we didn't sleep enough, we have to get up too early, etc. If you can just commit to doing it - 100 percent this time - you'll find it feels AMAZING. It's also important to have a supportive network of friends. Find some neighbors or an exercise group that you can be held accountable with.
Exclusive: We Tried the Viral Black Garlic Doritos From Japan, and This Is What Happened
Doritos fans across the world just about lost their minds when news broke of Black Garlic Doritos. Everyone's dreams were soon crushed when they learned the Doritos are only available in Japan, but we couldn't stand for that. POPSUGAR editors requested a sample, and we soon got our hands on these spooky chips to taste them for ourselves.
Overall, these Doritos went over incredibly well with our reviewers. Understandably, you need to be a fan of really garlicky foods to enjoy even one bite of these chips. A surprising note is that the Doritos have an unexpectedly sweet and fishy taste. The funky umami flavor hits American taste buds hard, but these flavor profiles are often seen in Japanese packaged snacks. Suffice it to say, for us Americans, a handful of these chips was enough to satisfy our snack craving.
Eager to hear more? Take a look at some of our tasters' funniest comments:
- "Whooooooa."
- "These taste like the gravy from Boston Market's mashed potatoes."
- "These are either a one or a five out of five - I'm having trouble deciding. They taste sweet, briny like shrimp(?), and corny like every Japanese chip snack. They definitely pack in the rich black garlic flavor."
- "These are my new fave flavor!"
- "Not loving the fishy taste. I love garlic and was surprised not to like these."
- "Tasty garlic flavor. Not quite as good as Cool Ranch though!"
As far as we know, Black Garlic Doritos won't be sold in US grocery stores any time soon, so you'll have to stick to your favorite flavor. But would you even try them if you could?

Watch Selena Gomez's First Spanish-Language Pantene Commercial
Selena Gomez's Pantene commercial recently made its debut in Mexico - and the Mexican-American "Kill Em With Kindness" singer artfully used the international opportunity to show off her language skills.
You might've noticed that Selena generally responds in English to Spanish-language interview questions (remember when she was hilariously wrapped in toilet paper on Despierta América?). However, it looks like the star has been practicing her Spanish, because, despite the fact that the internet has its doubts about Selena's real voice being featured on the commercial, she seems to deliver her lines about the brand's 3-Minute Miracle Deep Conditioner ($5) pretty flawlessly. Press play above to see it and decide whether it's Selena IRL for yourself. Once you've made up your mind, check out Selena's most fashionable moments so far this year.

Researchers Find a Concerning Link Between Obesity and Liver Cancer
A recent study outlined a worrisome link between obesity, diabetes, and liver cancer. In Cancer Research, a journal from the American Association for Cancer Research, a research team announced that a high body mass index, larger waist circumference, and diabetes can all increase the risk for liver cancer.
The researchers looked at 14 different studies - amounting to over one million participants - and noticed that liver cancer diagnoses increased as participants' respective body mass indexes increased. The risk for liver cancer was also affected by the subjects' waist circumferences. Meaning, subjects whose weight was more concentrated at the waist would have a higher risk of developing liver cancer even if their body mass indexes were the same as another subject with a lower risk.
Lastly, the study found that many of the high-risk subjects also had type 2 diabetes mellitus, a diabetes type partly caused by obesity.
The findings are changing the public's preconceived notions about liver cancer and its causes. In a press statement, Peter Campbell of the American Cancer Society said, "Liver cancer isn't simply related to excess alcohol intake and viral hepatitis infection." Adding, "This is yet another reason to maintain a body weight in the 'normal' range for your height."
If You're Wondering Why It Feels Like Half the Internet Is Down, Here's Why
If you live on the East Coast, you might've noticed that some of your favorite websites were completely down and inaccessible. While that issue was temporarily resolved, it appears that it is once again happening as a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack.
The DDoS attack is targeting Dyn, a company responsible for domain name serves (DNS), reports Gizmodo. Essentially, if Dyn is down, you can't access whatever website you're trying to visit. This morning's attack affected a huge number of websites, including Box, CNN, Etsy, HBO Now, Grubhub, Imgur, PayPal, Pinterest, Reddit, Spotify, Twitter, Yelp, and several more. The issue seemed resolved around 9:40 a.m. EDT but has once again started occurring - and the Department of Homeland Security is "monitoring this situation," reported Eric Geller, a reporter at Politico via Twitter.
For now, the DDoS attack appears to only be affecting those on the East Coast.
This situation is developing, so stay tuned for more details.

What a Dietician Wants You to Know About About Cashew Milk
Almond milk has been in the spotlight for a while since it's a great low-calorie, dairy-free alternative to regular milk. And if you go for the unsweetened variety, it's also sugar- and carb-free!
While picking up your half gallon of almond milk, you probably noticed another milk on the market made from cashews. It's been gaining popularity for its creamier consistency, but you may have avoided it because you assumed it was higher in fat or calories than almond milk. Check out the chart below to see how the two compare.

Certified dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition says they're not a great source of protein, so if you're looking for something comparable to milk, "soy milk is a pretty good choice, as one of the few nondairy milks that has protein, and is usually fortified with vitamin B12 as well." A one-cup serving has 80 calories, four grams of carbs, and seven grams of protein. But if you're watching your calories and carbs, almond and cashew milk are good options.

You're Going to Weep at This Dad's Reaction to Seeing His Son For the First Time
So many of the most incredible birth photos capture the exact moment a baby is born, and a group of photos taken by Jaydene Freund of Cradled Creations is the perfect example. The main difference with her photos, though, is rather than taking the first snaps of the baby with mom in the background, the Canadian couple featured asked Freund to instead capture the look on Dad's face as his son was born.
The photo is included in a full video of baby Theodore's birth story, an unmedicated and natural birth that elicited deep emotions from Mom, Dad, and loved ones in the delivery room. "This family planned to have dad catch and when baby started to emerge, mom had to yell at him to 'go catch the baby,'" Freund wrote on the video page. "He ran over just in time as the head was already out. . . . It all happened quickly and moments later the baby's body slid out and he was holding his son in the air with both hands. He was overcome with emotion."
Watch the video to see all of the birth footage and photos - you won't get through it without crying.
