If You Want to Lose Weight From Running, Read This
You started running months ago, yet every time you hop on the scale, you're let down by the results. What gives? While running does burn mega calories, here are some reasons you may not be seeing the weight-loss results you're after.
Postrun Pig-Outs
Burning tons of calories can cause a famished feeling afterward, but it's important to fuel wisely. Choose junk food as your recovery food and not only are you overdoing it on the calorie front, you'll be hungry again in the next hour. Although a postrun snack is essential, make sure it's packed with protein and filling carbs and does not exceed 150 calories. If you exercised before a meal, enjoy a sensibly portioned plate, and don't go overboard as a way to reward your efforts. If you still find you're utterly famished after a workout, it probably means you need to fuel up before you exercise, so enjoy one of these pre-workout snacks before heading out for a run.
You Don't Run Enough
If you're running and not seeing results, take a look at your calendar. Doing one 45-minute run or a couple 20-minute runs a week won't burn enough calories to lose weight. In order to lose a pound a week, you'll need to cut 500 calories each day, through a combination of diet and exercise. If losing weight is your goal, run three to four times per week and incorporate other forms of calorie-burning cardio and/or metabolism-boosting strength training on the other days.
You're Burning Less Than You Think
You just got back from a run, you're covered in sweat, and you're convinced you burned over 500 calories. But did you really? A 150-pound woman will burn 495 calories running for 45 minutes at a 10-minute-per-mile pace. If you didn't run for that long or that fast, then you're not burning as many calories as you thought. It's best to track your workout just to be sure, using a heart rate monitor or one of these cheap running apps on your phone.
Same Workout, Different Day
If you found a great three-mile loop in your neighborhood, running it for a few weeks can help running become a habit. The problem lies with continually doing the same running workout. Your muscles will quickly adapt to the demands you're placing on them, which is a surefire way to hit a weight-loss plateau. Avoid this issue by mixing up your running workouts: include speed intervals, hills, long runs, and short runs, and run on different surfaces and in new places to keep your muscles guessing and continuously strengthening. Check out these four training techniques that will challenge your run. As mentioned earlier, it's also important not to make running your sole source of exercise. Include other forms of cardio as well as strength training since muscle mass burns more calories and speeds up your metabolism.
It's Not Just About the Scale
Running is one of the best ways to tone your lower body because it helps diminish fat while building muscle. Muscle tissue is more dense than fat tissue, so it takes up less space. This means that although your weight might not decrease (and might even go up a little), other body measurements will change, such as waist circumference, bra size, or the shape of your tush. The number on the scale isn't always the best way to monitor your progress. Even though the scale's not budging, you might be able to fit into those skinny jeans you had your eye on.

Feeling Fit? Here's How to Challenge Yourself More in 2017
I am a planner and I like setting goals. In fact, I need them. Especially when it comes to my fitness life, specific goals keep me motivated and active. Finding new challenges to keep your workouts feeling fresh can be difficult when you're already pretty fit. Nothing beats the beginner's mind when it come to tackling a new fitness goal. I remember when I started running, building up to the 5K mark was beyond motivating; when I hit that distance, I was left with the question of what's next? But you guys, the fitness world is so large - you can always find new challenges. With that in mind, here are a few ideas to consider as you turn your thoughts toward all the possibilities 2017 has to offer.
Running
- Up your distance. If you finished a 5K sign up for a 10K. Just conquered a half-marathon? Train for a marathon, with the emphasis on train. Increasing your mileage should always come with a plan that slowly builds to ensure you don't try to conquer too much too quickly and sideline yourself with an overuse injury, like runner's knee or shin splints.
- Try a tri. Mix up your training and sign up for a sprint-distance triathlon and really dedicate yourself to cross-training by adding swimming and biking into your weekly routine. If you're intimidated by swimming, sign up for a class or find a group that does open-water swims.
- Race with a relay team. Round up your like-minded friends and create a team for a long-distance relay, where 12-person teams cover 195+ miles over a 24-hour time period, like Oregon's Hood to Coast or a Ragnar Relay. These races mix the sleep-deprivation silliness of a slumber party with teamwork and distance running. Trust me, it's a great combo.
In the Gym
- Go heavy with power lifting. Lifting heavy weights is a great full-body workout. Find a gym that offers courses on power lifting and learn the differences between snatch, clean, and jerk as you heave barbells loaded with weight to your chest and above your head.
- Master the pull-up. Leave the weights behind and finally master the pull-up. This ultimate bodyweight exercise feels elusive to many women, well at least me, and pulling off five pull-ups is an excellent challenge to work toward. Yeah, this is on my list for 2017.
- Push your push-ups and conquer the burpee. You don't need to leave the comfort of your home to get stronger when you focus on push-ups - here's a 30-day challenge to work up to 50 push-ups. If burpees are your nemesis, try this burpee challenge that builds to 100 reps.
- Get classy. Push yourself out of your comfort zone and try a new group fitness class, preferably a workout that is out of your comfort zone - the activities we tend to avoid are often really beneficial. Hip-hop aerobics, yoga, indoor cycling, Pilates, Megaformer, boxing - the options are endless especially if you add some studio fitness classes into the mix. Heck, push yourself to try a new class once a month. You just might find your new jam.
- Certify your passion. Do you love yoga? Do you go to SoulCycle almost daily? Take your passion and get certified to train other people and inspire them to love what you love.

Take It On the Road
- Take a hike; a long, long hike. Backpacking might not be considered a sport, but hiking for days and carrying all you need to survive is a physical challenge. And one that can take you to some amazing places. Spending time in nature is great for your mental health, too. Check out the John Muir Trail in California, the 2000 miles Appalachian Trail that runs from Georgia to Maine, or shorter trails in our beautiful National Parks.
- Ride a bike - anywhere. Hop on your bike weekly to run your weekend errands, sign up for century ride (yeah, that's 100 miles), or a fund-raising stage ride like AIDS/LifeCyle Ride.
- Start a community. Gather your like-minded friends and create a group dedicated to the activity you love, be it running, hiking, or cycling. Non-competitive clubs can be equal parts social and sport, and are great way to get your sweat on with a group.

Kate Middleton Has Been Wearing These Brown Boots For Over a Decade - and Now We Know Why
One thing we know to be true: Kate Middleton is a thrify shopper. Beyond loving her favorite high street stores like Zara and Topshop, the savvy duchess also saves her old items, waiting for the perfect moment to bring pieces back out.
During her well-documented tour in Canada, Kate brought along her favorite pair of Penelope Chilvers tasseled boots. The knee-high, embellished Long Tassel Boots ($616) were perfectly on-trend for 2016, but the shocker is she's owned them for years. She even packed them for her tour in India and Bhutan and sported these babies as far back as August 2005 for the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park in England.
Perhaps the key to why they've lasted so long lies in how they're made. Watch a video from the designer, who talks about the process and all that goes into a single pair. Then, check out how Kate's worn these boots throughout the years.

16 Resolutions New Moms Wish They Could Make in 2017
Adjusting to life as a new mom can be difficult, as no matter how many parenting books you've read, you're never quite as prepared as you think you are. Whether you had your baby earlier this year or just welcomed your bundle of joy recently, start the New Year off fresh . . . by realizing that you're not perfect. You may have a bunch of resolutions in mind that revolve around the way you'll raise your child and live your life postbaby, but the truth is that being a parent is tough work that isn't for the faint of heart.
Read through for 16 resolutions that you may try to make as a new mom in 2017 and what will likely result in each case because, hey, you're only human.
- I will sleep when the baby sleeps. Except for when I'm catching up on 40 loads of laundry or staring at the baby monitor for signs of life.
- I will not wish the baby years away. Except for after the days I am sleep-deprived, covered in spit up, and have listened to hours of nonstop crying.
- I will not care about what my body looks like because I just birthed a human. Unless I find a new patch of stretch marks that I want to complain about.
- I will make a conscious effort to spend time with friends. Except for when I'm too tired, don't want to, and would rather try to get 12 minutes of sleep.
- I will exclusively make homemade baby food once my kid eats solids. Unless those pouch things are cheaper than food processors when the day comes.
- I will ask for help when I need it. Except for when I know I can do things myself (the right way).
- I will stop listening to unsolicited parenting advice. Unless it seems like it could be something important - how do I know if it's important?!
- I will have a baby-free date night with my partner once a week. Except for when we would rather stay home to watch (read: fall asleep in front of) Netflix.
- I will start exercising again. Unless I can just count walking back and forth to check on my baby in her crib exercise. Can I?
- I will keep breastfeeding until my baby is ready to stop. Or until I decide my nipples have taken enough abuse.
- I will stop cursing around the baby. Except when I step on those f*cking wooden ABC blocks that seemed so cute before my feet met them.
- I will be more patient with my partner. Unless they forget to do the one tiny thing I asked them to do three days ago and need some persistent (albeit whiny) reminders.
- I will dress my baby in the cute outfits I spent so much money on while pregnant. Except for the ones that don't fit anymore because man, this kid grows fast.
- I will let my baby cry it out. Unless they start crying and it's both annoying and heartbreaking.
- I will keep up with the baby book. Except for when I have absolutely no time for it because babies are so needy and I'm so tired.
- I will not flood my social feeds with photos of my baby. Unless I take a stream of really sweet pictures of him drooling, because honestly, how can I post just one?
8 Foolproof Ways to Get Better Skin in 2017
Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Benjamine Stone
Make 2017 the year you get a clean slate - and by that, we mean a flawless face and the perfect canvas for makeup. Here, we have rounded up the products POPSUGAR beauty editors truly love and exactly how we use them.
1. Eat your way to clear skin. Your skin is technically your largest organ, so if you're eating something that is making it inflamed, it will show via acne, redness, or other irritations. Following a clean, balanced diet (like this one!) can change everything from your face's texture to the appearance (or disappearance) of fine lines and pimples.
2. Sleep on a silk pillowcase. Not only will it make your blow-dry last longer, but it also helps reduce the chance of forming wrinkles. Since your face is less smushed and roughed up by a scratchy pillowcase, everything stays smoother for those hours of slumber. Try Slip Silk Pillowcase - Jen Atkin is a fan!
3. Use face oil. It doesn't matter if you have oily skin, because oil fights oil. And if you have dry skin, even better. Choose a face oil that feels and smells amazing to you (we like this holistic one from Tata Harper), and make it part of your nightly routine. The aromatherapy benefits are just a bonus.
4. Speaking of oil, try double cleansing. This ritual is the best way to ensure you go to bed with a clean yet hydrated face. Start by massaging a cleansing oil, such as Shu Uemura Anti-Oxi Cleansing Oil, into dry skin. Add water and rise. Follow with a milky face wash, such as Chanel Lait Confort Creamy Cleansing Milk. After, your skin will feel like butter, and there will be zero traces of smudged eyeliner or mascara.
5. Do a Korean beauty eye mask. K-beauty innovations tend to be ahead of the curve when it comes to unique textures - like gels or under-eye patches. We tested six of them to report back on the ones that actually work. Find the best one for you as well as concealer, and start loving your eye area again.
6. Try an at-home peel. One of the most effective ways to get rid of dull skin is a glycolic peel. There is no actual peeling involved. It's more like a clear "mask" that stings a bit, and then you wash it off. These are often done during facials, but as long as you test the product on a place like your arm to make sure you are not allergic, they are safe to do while you're watching Netflix in sweats. We like these Cane and Austin peel pads, which instantly give you a smoother face.
7. Wear SPF every day, even in the Winter. But actually do it! UV rays make skin more sensitive, according to top NYC dermatologist Dr. Amy Wechsler. And the sun can damage your skin, even when it's cold outside. Protect your skin now, and it will age better. Try Tatcha Pore Perfecting Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35, which doesn't have that telltale sunscreen scent and acts like a primer for makeup.
8. Stop picking your face! You are likely getting scars, and we bet this was also your resolution last year. Make it work in 2017 by following this guide, which breaks down the psychology behind why we pick our faces and offers actionable techniques on how to stop. Now, back away from that magnifying mirror.
5 Things You Should Try to Say to Your Child Every Single Day
There are no doubt hundreds of exchanges between you and your child each day including everything from morning routine encouragement, yelling at them to pick up their toys, praising the art they brought home from school, and reading bedtime stories together. With each day, the exchanges will change slightly, but there is one routine exchange you should strive to have with your child every single day - a positive one that will remind them how appreciated, admired, and loved they are, always.
These are five things you should say to your child every single day, whether they be scattered throughout or said in one fell swoop before bed:
- Something they did that you're proud of.
- Something you know they tried their best at.
- Something you loved doing with them.
- Something they said that made you laugh.
- And no matter how you choose to say it: "I love you."
At first you may want to present each item one after another as more of a checklist, or even tweak a few to better fit your relationship with them. Either way, as time goes on it will become habit to communicate these positive thoughts to your children every day, and it's something they'll remember you doing for the rest of their lives.
20 Ways to Extend the Life of Your Clothes in 2017
While everyone loves buying new clothes, sometimes the clothes already in your closet get neglected. Your shoes get scuffed, your sweaters get pilled, and your favorite black jeans fade to a not-so-evenly-hued gray. Maybe you toss your once-white t-shirts in the trash after a few wears and simply buy a new one.
Turn over a new leaf in 2017 and stop forgetting to take care of your clothes. Take the time to wash your garments properly, store them so that they keep their shape, and keep your favorite items looking as good as when you first bought them. We've rounded up 20 ways to take care of your wardrobe that will keep you looking stylish all year long.
A Body-Positive Resolution (And 12 Ways to Implement It This Year)
Make your resolution this year to love your body more, and make your 2017 mantra, "I love my body." Instead of setting a weight-loss goal or some kind of resolution that you'll forget about two weeks into January, why not celebrate yourself all year round? We've got 12 tips for you to show yourself some TLC and live a happier, healthier life. You can challenge yourself to one a month, or do all of these things throughout the year.
- Meditate once a week (or more!) and repeat your mantra for the year.
- Buy yourself a new outfit that makes you feel amazing.
- Find a new healthy recipe you love, and master it - you'll be an expert at cooking something that makes you feel good.
- Give yourself a daily compliment, no matter how small.
- Track your water intake every day for a month, and make notes about how you feel when you're more hydrated. Do you have more energy? Is your mood improved?
- Pick one of your favorite parts of your body and find a way to highlight it. Are you proud of your booty? Grab yourself a gift for your butt. Love your back muscles? Get yourself a backless dress that showcases your hard work.
- Upload a selfie or a picture of yourself to Instagram - work that confidence!
- Each time you find yourself comparing yourself to others, remind yourself to celebrate their beauty and your own.
- Plan a self-care day (or two . . . or three). Get a massage, do a face mask or get a facial, and go to a yoga class. Celebrate your body and your health!
- Make this year the year you stop critiquing and judging others - you'll find that you'll be kinder to yourself, too!
- Each time you feel like you have a setback, acknowledge your bad feelings, let it go, and do your best to move on with your day. Holding on to negativity can make you feel toxic - not good for your brain or your body! Don't feel bad about having bad feelings (it's normal), but make this year about staying positive.
- Work out because you LOVE your body, not because you hate it. This year, find a workout you love that makes you feel good - not one you you want to do because you're trying to lose weight or change your appearance. Even if it's just walking more, that added movement will increase your feelings of happiness and endorphin levels, and you'll glow from the inside out.

Tyler Florence's Hack Will Forever Change the Way You Make Mashed Potatoes
Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Nicole Perry
Food Network chef Tyler Florence shared his mashed potatoes recipe with us, and I immediately had to try it. Traditionally, potatoes are cooked in water before being mashed together with butter and cream (or milk). However, Tyler suggests cooking the potatoes in the cream itself, so no potato-y flavor is lost. He explains, "Potatoes have a really delicate, beautiful minerality to their flavor profile, and when you cook potatoes in water and you pour that water down the drain, you've extracted all the flavor of the potato. So what I do with mashed potatoes - because you finish them with cream and butter anyway, right? - is I'll take that same cream and butter and add that to the potatoes and cook the potatoes in cream and butter." Would that actually work? Would it actually taste good? I had to find out.

As Tyler instructed, I added "cold, peeled, chopped potatoes, cream, butter, and olive oil" to a pan. He also told us, "I like garlic. I like sage and rosemary flavor combinations, and a little bit of thyme." To my pot of 3 pounds of potatoes, I added enough half and half to just barely cover the potatoes. Frankly, I was scared about using straight cream, which is why I deviated slightly from his instruction. I then added about 3 tablespoons of salted butter and 3 tablespoons of olive oil. I added a few cloves of peeled garlic and half a bunch each of sage, rosemary, and thyme. I also included a significant amount of salt (at least a teaspoon) so the potatoes could absorb some of the flavor while cooking. I covered the pot and allowed it to simmer on medium until the potatoes became fork tender, about 20 minutes. The aroma in my kitchen was unbelievable.

Here's what Tyler told us to do next: "When the potatoes are tender, I put a bowl on the counter and a colander inside that bowl. I pour the potatoes through the colander, and the cream will collect on the bottom. Then I'll put the potatoes back into the pot and take the potato-infused garlic cream and fold that back into the potatoes, and it's the most incredible flavor profile. It's the best mashed potato you'll ever taste in your entire life." And so, I did just that. I drained the potatoes, collecting the rich liquid while discarding the herb stems. I then mashed the potatoes, adding back in the liquid until I created velvety smooth mashed potatoes with little specks of garlic and herbs. I salted and peppered to taste and served up with my lemon-garlic-parsley roast turkey and gravy. These mashed potatoes are pure heaven. I can now agree with Tyler's affirmation; they really are the best mashed potatoes I've ever tasted in my entire life. And even though I was scared it would be a huge flop, I'm never going back to any other method again.

5 Tips to Help You Eat a More Plant-Based Diet in 2017
Whatever your reason, eating less meat is a good thing: meat recalls, environmental woes, financial cost, and ethical concerns are enough to turn even the most Neanderthal-esque carnivore into a sprout-lovin' vegan. If weight loss is a concern, cutting back on meat is also a simple way to reduce calories and up nutrients in your diet. But for those of us that can't resist the lure of a juicy burger, luscious pork belly, or the satisfying saltiness of bacon, it's becoming harder to reconcile what we want with what's best. Barring becoming a vegetarian, one way to handle the whole being-a-responsible-meat-eater thing is to do what you can to eat more plant-based foods in the upcoming year.
Give Yourself a Weekly Meat Budget
Instead of making the meat the main attraction of your meal, think of it as a side dish. An easy way to cut back is to give yourself a meat allowance of about a pound a week. This still allows you to have bacon with your Sunday brunch, or throw in some chicken breast with your salad, but it encourages you to use fresh produce and whole grains for the majority of your meals.
Take Part in Meatless Mondays
Can't go vegetarian on a daily basis? Give yourself a goal of cutting it out at least one day a week. As this becomes easier, you might add on extra days or follow the Vegan Before Dinner diet, popularized by cookbook author and food advocate Mark Bittman. Giving up meat doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing choice; small changes can make a big impact. A recent study indicates that livestock production is responsible for a whopping 20 percent of human-caused greenhouse gases, and that eating less meat can reduce your carbon footprint.
Wean Yourself Off Slowly
A great tip we got from Lisa Eberly, MPH, RD, is to give meat up gradually. "Start by going to white meat sources, then to fish, then move to high-fiber and high-protein grains and beans," she said. Doing so allows your mind and body to adjust to the change without feeling deprived. Eberly also stresses that whole grains and legumes are essential in a vegetarian diet. Not only are the nutrient-rich, but they are a satisfying replacement for meat. Bean burgers, anyone?
Find Satisfying Substitutes
Giving up meat isn't always easy, the flavors and texture can be hard to replicate. To make the shift a little easier for yourself, Eberly suggests that in addition to whole grains and legumes, you incorporate starchy veggies like squash and sweet potatoes because "they feel more feel more filling than leaner veggies." Lori Zanini, RD, CDE, also echoes this and suggests mushrooms as a good stand-in for meat. "They're savory, very versatile, and great source vitamin D," Zanini said. If veggies still won't cut it, try meat substitutes that mimic the taste and texture of the real thing like The Beyond Burger, tempeh bacon, or Gardein chicken strips.
I Did All of This, but Still REALLY Want Meat
If all of the above fails, and you find that you are still craving meat at every meal, you may be low in iron or need protein, says Eberly. Make sure to incorporate vegetarian protein sources and plant-based, iron-rich foods in every meal. Doing so should help you feel satisfied and give your body the nutrients it's craving.

These Comics Capture Exactly What Hogwarts Students Felt While Harry Potter Was There
Attending Hogwarts while Harry, Ron, and Hermione caused chaos (and saved the wizarding world) was probably the worst time to go. Simple activities like going to a Quidditch game or even taking your History of Magic final turned into yet another drama about Harry Potter. It's these feelings that one artist is turning into hilarious comics.
Based in Brussels, artist Emily McGovern has a comic series called "My Life as a Background Slytherin." In it, she details what it must've been like to go to Hogwarts at the same time as Harry Potter. Remember when Hermione set fire to Snape's cloak in the first book? Emily's character in the comic spots her doing it! Those "Potter Stinks" badges? Totally Emily's idea as a background Slytherin. McGovern publishes her comics on Instagram, Tumblr, and Facebook. While people love them there with hundreds of "likes" and notes, they are also going viral on Reddit.
See some of our favorites ahead, and be sure to follow her to read more of her comics. You might even find two that document life as a background Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff student!
12 Times Parents Need to Focus on Their Kids - and Not on Their Devices - in 2017
Parents complain all of the time that their older children are addicted to their phones, but many don't realize how dependent they are on their own devices. Kids pick up what they learn from their parents, and not only could mom or dad's excessive screen time be rubbing off on their kids, but it can also be teaching them that whatever is happening online is more important than them.
It might seem like common sense to put down the phone when your kid is around, especially during opportunities to connect before or after a long day, but a recent study showed that parents are guilty of not being able to unplug. According to a new report from Common Sense Media, parents spend more than nine hours with screen media each day and 82 percent of that time (almost eight hours) is outside of doing work. In case you or someone you know has a tendency to be on the phone or tablet when kids are around, here's a reminder of times when you should be engaging with kiddos and not technology as well as how to make that more realistic.
Ask yourself: Are you guilty of ever being on your phone when . . .?
- You're having breakfast with your child.
- They're explaining their hopes or concerns for the day.
- They're struggling to get their shoes on and out the door.
- They walk through the door.
- They're telling you about their day.
- They're having a snack with you.
- They're asking for help with homework.
- You're watching a practice, game, or performance.
- You're having dinner together.
- You're getting them ready for bed.
- You're asking them a question.
- Pretty much whenever your child is around and it isn't essential to be on your phone.
If the answer is yes to any or all of these, here's how you can make staying unplugged a little easier:
- Silence It: Put your phone on do not disturb mode for the first hour that you are home with your kids so you don't get sucked into any distractions.
- Have Blackout Times: Make it a rule that you don't look at your phone until after dinner or the kids are in bed.
- Keep it Away From Meals: Have everyone in the family turn off their phones or leave all devices in a different room during dinner to prevent any interruptions.
- Work on Your Work-Life Boundaries: Be clear with work about times that you are offline so you don't feel pressured to constantly check in during those moments.
- Just Look Up: Make eye contact with your children a priority.
- Stop Assuming You Can Do It All: Reevaluate the times you need to multitask with the help of technology while the kids are home and work on breaking the cycle to streamline your routine.
The 1 Pair of Shoes It's Time to Break Up With

10 Simple Ways to Grow Your Social Media Presence in 2017
If 2016 was all about tasteful branding and the expansion of one's social media presence, 2017 will be the year we actually do it. With so many users out there, it may seem difficult to drastically grow your following across Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and other platforms. In actuality, all it takes is some thoughtful planning. Ahead, we've listed a few simple ways you can increase your presence . . . without actually paying for followers. (Seriously, don't do that.)
- Try posting consistently: It's easy for a tweet or Instagram photo to get lost in the feed. Increase your visibility by sticking to a consistent and regular schedule. On the other hand, you don't want to bombard your readers, but a few tweets a day and an Instagram post every two days should do the trick.
- Actually use hashtags: I know what you're thinking - this is an obvious point. If you aren't already, however, tacking on a few hashtags to every post can really affect your reach. Also, make sure to research the hashtags you're using so that they correspond to the correct hashtag that's actually trending.
- Create your own hashtag: While it's good to use hashtags that are trending across the internet, think about starting your own, too! The tag can be a witty play on your name and will group together photos with a similar theme.
- Download photo editing apps: Photography apps - like VSCO Cam and Snapseed - offer additional filters that can give your Instagram feed a cohesive and polished look. The best part? A lot of the great ones are free! For more apps, click here.
- Consider your brand: Take this tip with a grain of salt. We recognize that individuals are incredibly dynamic and multidimensional, so we wouldn't want to encourage you whittling your very being down to a singular "brand." You should, however, have your tweets and captions match your personal voice in real life. Your online presence will end up feeling more authentic as a result.
- Don't exist in a bubble: While you may be focusing on ways to improve your own presence, think about your followers and the pages that you follow. It's important to interact and engage with others to really grow your network.
- Pay attention to when you're posting: Post something new during peak hours, where people are more likely to be online. While not everyone regularly checks their feed during the workday, users are usually more active after work and later in the evenings.
- Cross-promote your many pages: This one is simple: make sure to promote all of your different handles somewhere in your bio.
- Don't be camera shy: According to social media scientist Dan Zarrella, pictures with faces in them receive more engagement than pictures without.
- Try new features early: Don't wait to jump on new features like Instagram Stories or Facebook Live. By being one of the first users to utilize new tools, you'll not only have less competition, you'll also make yourself seem ahead of the curve.
Can You Refreeze Raw Meat After Thawing?
It's probably fair to say that every omnivorous home cook has wondered at some point or another whether it's OK to refreeze that piece of steak after thawing it out and realizing it won't need to be made after all. The short answer? Yes, you can - but you may not want to.
According to the USDA, when raw meat is thawed in the refrigerator, it is safe to refreeze it without cooking. For this reason, it's perfectly all right to purchase, say, a previously frozen piece of salmon, and then put it in your freezer when you get home. But if you refreeze thawed poultry or meat, you will be compromising quality of taste and texture. Not only does meat lose water during the defrosting process, but refreezing it also creates ice crystals within the structure of the meat that alter its fibers, leaving an unfortunately dry cut of meat.
Of course, like all raw animal protein, the true safety of the product will depend on whether it's been properly handled. The best ways to defrost raw meat are in the refrigerator, in cold water, or in the microwave - not on a room-temperature kitchen counter.
