This 12-Month "I Am Strong" Challenge Is Better Than Any New Year's Resolution

While New Year's resolutions are often well-intentioned, the sad truth is that they usually fall out of focus sometime around February. Have you been there before? We certainly have. So what's a more actionable way to meet your goals every month? Mix it up and have a clear objective month by month, rather than for the year overall.

This year's mantra for us is "I am strong." Do you need some strength in your life? Are you hoping to feel more empowered, more in control, and more self-loving? Take a look at the 12 ways we're instilling this positive affirmation and living our strongest lives yet in 2017. You can mix up the months and customize your schedule and even fill in things that make YOU feel strong in particular.

Each day of 2017, make it your goal to say, "I am strong" and live your life accordingly. These 12 unique monthly challenges will help you remember the end goal: self love and a happier, better life.

January Challenge: Try a New Workout

Pick a new style of workout, and commit to it all month long. It has to be something you've never done before! If you've never run before, give yourself a goal of running a mile without stopping by the end of the month. New to yoga? You'll be amazed at how strong you get by committing to a few classes a week.

February Challenge: Compliment Yourself More

Make it a goal to give yourself five compliments a day for a month. These are words of affirmation that will build on your inner strength and self love, and they can be big things like, "I'm so intelligent," or smaller ones like, "My hair looks fabulous!" (We picked up this tip from the inspiring health coach and fitness fashionista, Joanne Encarnacion.)

March Challenge: Set a Strength Goal

You don't have to complete your goal in March, but you definitely have to set it and start working toward it. What strong thing do you want to accomplish this year? Complete a pull-up? 50 push-ups? Your first half-marathon? Maybe even a triathlon? Summit a mountain? Decide now what your goal will be, when you'll complete it, and create a plan to work toward that goal.

April Challenge: Pack Your Fitness Schedule

This month, plan five workouts each week for the whole month. They can be at-home videos, group fitness at a studio, a run, a dance class, or personal training. Pick a way to move each day at the beginning of the month, and stick to your schedule.

May Challenge: Gratitude Journal

Find a journal or notebook, and each day in May write down five to 10 things you're grateful for. You'll be mentally and emotionally equipped to handle anything!

June Challenge: Strong-Body Diet

This is your month to learn about macronutrients and focus on getting more protein to nourish your strong muscles. Make it a goal to learn four to six new protein-rich recipes and eat them throughout the month. When you feed your body the right foods, you'll feel strong.

July Challenge: Kickass Combat

Try boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing, or a similar style of workout. You could even sign up for a self-defense class! Plan out your month and go at least four times.

August Challenge: The Buddy System

In August, find an accountability partner. Whether it's your best friend, sister, or co-worker, find someone in your life who wants to feel strong, too. Go to healthy lunches together, plan workouts, and shower each other with empowering and meaningful words of affirmation. "You're so strong!" is always a good one. You'll be stronger together, and sharing your strength with another person will make you feel incredible.

September Challenge: Meditation and Affirmation

While we're hoping you'll tell yourself "I am strong" every day this year, September is your month to really drive that home. This month, try a 10-minute meditation practice each morning right when you wake up, before the day gets away from you. Body-positive superstar and Movemeant Foundation founder Jenny Gaither says she creates a new mantra for herself each week, like, "love continues to flow in and out of me," for instance. Repeat your daily, weekly, or September mantra to yourself as you clear your mind through mental-strengthening meditation.

October Challenge: Learn a New Skill

While fitness is a surefire way to create a sense of strength, you can find it in other ways, too! By learning something new and challenging yourself, you'll feel so empowered. This can be as simple as, "I'm going to learn how to poach an egg," or "I'm going to learn five phrases in Italian this month." If fitness is the only way for you, then loop back to the challenge from January, and pick up a new kind of workout, or an exercise move you're trying to master - maybe a Turkish Get-Up?

November Challenge: Heat Things Up

As the weather gets chilly, choose workouts that make you really, really sweaty. Whether it's hot yoga or an intense indoor cycling class, bring on the sweat! Also, if you haven't yet, make sure you're completing your strength goal from March.

December Challenge: Give Back

Choose a charity, cause, or nonprofit to focus your efforts on. You can even commit to a random-act-of-kindness challenge. Adopting more charitable habits, giving more of yourself, and doing something to help others will help you feel strong - especially when you know someone else needs a little extra strength. The power you've created all year long is ready to explode and impact the world in a great way. You did it!

Our Favorite Healthy Grab-and-Go Breakfasts

Being pressed for time can make it hard to sit down and enjoy breakfast, and too many times, we skip breakfast altogether or opt for a calorie-laden pastry, which is not the best way to start your day. A healthy breakfast can help keep metabolism consistent and energy levels fired up. Instead of skipping your morning meal, grab one of these healthy breakfast dishes as you rush out the door. Each recipe is well-balanced and filling and can be made in batches before the busy week starts.

We Untangled the Charlie Puth and Bella Thorne Drama, and We're Still Confused

On Wednesday evening, Charlie Puth decided his official Twitter, which has almost a million followers, was the best place to get a few things off his chest. In a series of cryptic tweets, the up-and-coming singer apologized and begged some unnamed person to come to their senses, all the while insisting, "you know who you are." It wasn't until he picked up where he left off on Thursday morning, though, that the target of his tweets seemed to be Bella Thorne, whom he'd just been romantically linked to at the beginning of this week. In the next set of tweets, he expressed shock and said he'd be "removing himself" from the situation.

What caused Charlie to fire off all these tweets, just days after his alleged romance with Bella Thorne surfaced? The source of the turmoil might actually be on Bella's own Twitter, where she seems to have spent Thursday night "taking a trip down memory lane."

The pictures show the actress cuddling up to her ex-boyfriend, Tyler Posey. Bella and Tyler began dating in September of this year, just a month after Bella ended her year-long relationship with actor Gregg Sulkin. While Tyler and Bella never explicitly announced a breakup, we last saw them out together in October, and rumors of their split swirled throughout November. While it's unclear whether Charlie's tweets are a direct response to Bella's picture, it seems he believes that the two haven't quite ended things. To make things more perplexing, Bella added her own side to the story on Thursday afternoon.

The article Bella's referring to is her recent interview with Paper Magazine, in which she talks about dating Tyler and dealing with the paparazzi. It's possible Charlie read the story himself, but fans of the singer also reportedly tweeted him about the interview and Bella's romance with Tyler. Weirdly enough, as a sort of cap on everything else, Scream Queens actress Keke Palmer shared a few thoughts of her own, which Bella Thorne retweeted, possibly as a sign of agreement.

So, where does that leave us? Tyler and Bella are seemingly broken up, and Charlie has allegedly removed himself from a situation that Bella insisted is a "just friends" kind of deal. We'll, um, keep you updated as the story develops.

You'll Actually Want All of These 10 Gifts Picked by Urban Decay Founder Wende Zomnir

This holiday season, POPSUGAR Beauty tapped some of our favorite influencers, including popular brand owners, bloggers, pros, and celebrities, to share the gifts they would like to receive or give. Find more gifting inspiration here.

We want Wende Zomnir's life: she spends her days surfing on the beach in California, being a mom to her sons, and creating the empire that is Urban Decay Cosmetics. The brand is beloved for its sexy, longwear makeup - settings sprays, Naked eye shadow palettes, and longwear lipsticks are just some of the top sellers.

Since Wende has such fantastic taste when it comes to creating products you love, we figured she would be savvy at choosing the best beauty gifts to give this season.

"I couldn't survive the holidays without online shopping," she told POPSUGAR via email. "I like doing it from my desk after my boys go to bed, so that I don't miss any time with them during the holiday season. And I can do it when I travel. It's fun for me to give gifts of beauty because I'm always being asked my opinion on makeup, skin care and hair care - a beauty gift is the three-dimensional expression of all my advice!"

Wende also has a theory on present presentation. "Unless you love wrapping, I believe in spending the extra money for gift wrap and direct shipping if you are giving to an out-of-town friend or family member. Save the time and spend it with your people! And speaking of spending time with people, my resolution for Holiday 2016 is to look around, look my gift recipient in the eye, and never glance down at my phone while we enjoy the festivities together, in person, in the real world."

Keep reading to discover 10 gorgeous holiday gifts, all chosen by Wende!

After Receiving an Email From an Insecure Fan, This Fitness Blogger Responded With a Strong Message

Today, scrolling through Instagram at any given moment can do a lot of damage to one's confidence. With feeds filled with overly filtered models, with cheekbones and abs smoothed to perfection, it's hard not to compare yourself to these people, regardless of how you look. Now, one woman's photo is going viral because she's promised to keep it real and encourage her followers to love themselves as they are.

When fitness blogger Anna Victoria received a message from a 16-year-old fan telling her that her self-esteem has taken a toll from seeing "perfect" bodies on Instagram, Anna knew she had to do something. She posted a photo with no makeup, with no fancy hairdo, and definitely no filter to spread a message of self-love.

"I'm not sharing this because I think I look bad, or because tummy rolls are bad, or because cellulite, messy hair or no makeup is bad. None of those things are bad or imperfect. They are NORMAL," she wrote on Instagram. "I'm sharing this because I just received an email from a 16 year old girl that said I am the only person she follows that actually made her feel good about herself. That even though she's not particularly unhappy with her body, that seeing endless perfect photos started to make herself compare, poke and prod at her own body."

Anna is making sure her fans see the real her by showing her "imperfections" and we are loving it. Her post has over 22,000 likes and nearly 600 comments in just three days. "The impact social media has on young girls and their self-esteem is an issue I feel very strongly about and if me posting one casual, non-posing, non-done up photo can help a young girl (or man, or anyone of any age!) feel better about themselves, then I'm happy to put myself out there," she wrote.

Although many bloggers and Instagram models may not feel the same way about what we choose to share on social media, Anna asks her fans to be proud of themselves and love every inch of their bodies. "We need more girls who are wildly confident and loving every bit of themselves and shouting it from the rooftops," she closed her message. "Show young girls it's not only okay but necessary to be confident, strong young women, 'flaws' and all."

It's incredibly important for young girls to see photos like Anna's on social media, and it's not the first time she has opened up about what body positivity means to her. Keep reading to see some of Anna's other empowering Instagram posts that will make you want to look in the mirror and smile.

Everything You Want to Know About Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt's Romance

We'd be excited about Passengers based on star power alone - it's Jennifer Lawrence paired with Chris Pratt - but there's so much more that's making this one of the most anticipated releases of the year. It's a futuristic, space-set drama that pairs the charismatic duo as humans stranded on a spacecraft who eventually fall in love. If you watched the trailer and you're eager for more info, here's what you need to know before heading to the theater!

The Plot

Lawrence plays Aurora and Pratt plays Jim, two passengers who have been sleeping in suspended animation on a spacecraft bound for a colony 120 years away. They wake up 90 years early, and as they navigate their lives on the ship, they start to fall in love. When they find out their ship is in danger, though, they have to figure out how to save the other 5,000 passengers still sleeping aboard.

The Cast

Aside from Pratt and Lawrence, Martin Sheen and Laurence Fishburne are also in the cast. This is the first movie that stars Lawrence and Pratt, and it was clear that they had tons of chemistry when they posed for pictures at CinemaCon in April.

There Are Sex Scenes

Speaking of that chemistry, one of the biggest headlines to come out of Passengers is about Lawrence and Pratt's sex scene. Pratt told MTV that Lawrence was so nervous that they decided to get drunk before filming their scene. When we spoke to the pair, they made it sound like their romantic sequences were more awkward than anything else.

The Director Is Extraordinarily Proud of the Movie

Morten Tyldum is directing, and he's very pleased with the film, which says a lot for a man who was recently nominated for an Oscar (for The Imitation Game). Tyldum sang the film's praises to Entertainment Weekly, saying he is "very, very happy with the movie."

It's More Romance Than Sci-Fi

Even more promisingly, Tyldum said this to EW: "Every generation has its love story. I feel like this is it." Wow.

The Release Date

Just in time for the holidays, Passengers comes out on Dec. 21.

The Trailer

Everything That Happens at the End of This Year's Big Space Romance, Passengers

Warning: spoilers below!

Upon first look, Passengers seems like a sweet movie. Based on what we see in the trailers, Jim (Chris Pratt) and Aurora (Jennifer Lawrence) both accidentally wake up due to an unfortunate spaceship malfunction and make the best of their new lives in outer space together. There's space frolicking! There's a space date! There's space sex! Everything seems pretty hunky-dory. Sure, the trailers also hint at the big crisis in the film as well: that the spaceship is malfunctioning and it's up to these two to save themselves and everyone else, lest the whole thing be blown to smithereens. While the bare-bones plot is evident, the trailers don't give you a full scope of the story. Here's how everything goes down.

Jim is actually the only passenger to wake up due to the malfunction. He quickly realizes he's all by himself, and the huge spaceship basically turns into a one-man playground. He plays basketball and video games all day, he treats himself to the finest meals that are in his customer package, he goes out into space, and he tries to get back to sleep. After a year of loneliness, solitude, and eventual hopelessness, he happens upon Aurora, who still sleeps soundly in her pod. For some reason, Jim latches on to Aurora out of the thousands and thousands of other passengers, and after a month or so of painful deliberation, he wakes her up on purpose.

While there is a honeymoon period, probably a year, when the couple is happy, Aurora soon discovers what Jim's done. She's devastated, heartbroken, and unwilling to forgive him. They seem doomed to live out their lives separately on this hopeless ship, until the captain (Laurence Fishburne) suddenly wakes up. His pod has riddled him with cancer and 200 other crazy body abnormalities, so he only lives long enough to tell Jim and Aurora to fix the ship, and to give them the proper clearance to access everything. They find out a huge rock has broken through the shield and has messed up a crucial part of the ship. They need to fix the nuclear reactor to get everything back on track.

Jim and Aurora save the day. Jim has to go outside to open a door that will vent out all the built-up heat in the reactor (blah, blah, science), and he nearly dies in the process. Aurora manages to rescue him and save him at the very last second. The two fix the ship, and all is forgiven. Jim realizes that a advanced hospital bed in the medical center has the ability to simulate the same sleep that the pods cause. In essence, Aurora could go back to sleep and wake up with everyone else in 90 years. And she decides not to.

Sure, Aurora has the right to make this choice, but it's hard not to think about it in the context of her character. She's an aspiring writer who hopes to be the next big voice of her generation. She has a goal: to be the first person to travel to this distant planet and back, and to live to tell her tale. She hates Jim for taking this life away from her. By the end, the fact that she's fallen in love with him feels more like Stockholm's syndrome than a change of heart. Aurora gives up everything for the man who woke her up against her will and, more or less, ruined her life. Because it's so romantic, right?

It Took Gwyneth Paltrow Less Than 1 Second to Name Her Favorite Designer Bag

When we spoke to Gwyneth Paltrow on the red carpet in NYC, the only accessory she had on was her Frederique Constant smartwatch. Fitting, since the actress and businesswoman was promoting her new collaboration with the brand. "It's the first time I'm wearing it!" she said excitedly, showing off her sleek timepiece. Gwyneth told us she'd use it to jazz up any LBD, describing its special details: "I think this is a black face with some diamonds on it, so that's a nice evening look."

Though she's a natural when it comes to mastering outfits at fancy events, we had to ask about her laid-back yet sophisticated street style - and that's when another major accessory came into play: her handbags."I tend to have Céline bags a lot. I carry them a lot," she said quickly. After a little digging, we discovered that Gwyneth's go-to design is a cobalt-blue luggage tote, but she's got some neutral options too. Read on to see shots of Gwyneth with her Céline, which just might convince you to invest in one (or a similar silhouette).

The 4 Healthy Staples Hilaria Baldwin Always Has in Her Fridge

With three children all under the age of three (little Carmen is just over 3 years old, Rafael is 1, and Leo is a newborn!), a packed schedule as an author and business woman, and barely enough time to get in a yoga practice while the babies are napping, Hilaria Baldwin has to make sure she's fueling her body with exactly the right foods - and in the most efficient way possible.

The hardworking mother and yogi is launching her new book (full of healthy recipes!), The Living Clearly Method: 5 Principles for a Fit Body, Healthy Mind & Joyful Life. And despite how crazy she told POPSUGAR her day-to-day might be, she really does seem to have it all together. She's happy, on the move, and so fit and healthy.

So of course, we had to know what she's been eating and what she always has on hand. The organized list-maker has a solid method, with four staples, for her go-to meal: quinoa bowls. "Life is so busy, so to have things cooked and ready to go for a few days - but still have the food be different - is so important. I always have quinoa bowls!"

Her meal prepping tactic is super simple and easy to implement. "It's just like making a salad!" she said. Here's what she always has on hand no matter what:

  1. Cooked quinoa: The foundation for her staple meal, Hilaria cooks up batches of quinoa to have in her refrigerator.
  2. Proteins: Hilaria makes bowls with chicken, fish, and tofu - also meal prepped and ready-to-go-for mix-and-match bowls.
  3. Veggies: She told us that she always has different veggies, but she also really loves sweet potatoes and lentils to throw in there, too. This creates the perfectly balanced bowl with healthy starches and fiber.
  4. Healthy dressing: And she makes it herself! Finish the quinoa bowl off with a flavorful dressing (with purposeful ingredients, of course) to keep things fresh and different. Her favorite dressing is a "chamomile, honey, and lavender dressing" that she says is "perfect for letting go" of stress and anxiousness, or "anything you don't need anymore." She loves bringing the healing properties of lavender into her food as a way to calm down.

This method of meal prep is something we can all have on hand - cooked quinoa and protein, prepped veggies, and a healthy dressing. They're all so easy to make and prepare to keep in the fridge throughout the week, and it's a surefire way to meal prep without getting bored.

Cool-Girl Manicurist Madeline Poole Shares 10 Hot Beauty Gifts You Need

This holiday season, POPSUGAR Beauty tapped some of our favorite influencers, including popular brand owners, bloggers, pros, and celebrities, to share the gifts they would like to receive or give. Find more gifting inspiration here.

Chic nail art inspiration can always be found at manicurist Madeline Poole's Instagram page. There, the Sally Hansen ambassador shares every geometric and negative-space design imaginable. Because she has such a fashion-forward eye, we had to ask her advice about holiday shopping.

"I really love buying people gifts," she told us via email. "It's an interesting challenge, trying to get it right. Beauty products are great because you can buy them all online and you don't have to worry about whether or not they will fit! There are some things I know that anyone will like - like nail polish."

She went on: "In terms of colors, if I don't already know what someone likes, I get really sneaky and look through pictures on Instagram or Facebook to investigate. For younger people, I think they really respond to fun and colorful packaging while an older crowd seem to like things that just look as luxe as possible! All in all, beauty products make everyone feel good, and I love getting things for people they wouldn't buy for themselves, things that seem a little unnecessary or out of your normal realm are really fun to receive."

One of Birth's Most Common Practices Is About to Change

Update: Instead of immediately cutting a newborn's umbilical cord, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists just issued new guidelines in support of delayed cord clamping. The new recommendation advises that for healthy babies, doctors and midwifes wait a minimum of 30 to 60 seconds before clamping, and comes after years of research showing that the delay benefits the baby without putting mom at risk.

"While there are various recommendations regarding optimal timing for delayed umbilical cord clamping, there has been increased evidence that shows that the practice in and of itself has clear health benefits for both [all] infants," Dr. Maria Mascola, the new opinion's lead author, wrote. "And, in most cases, this does not interfere with early care, including drying and stimulating for the first breath and immediate skin-to-skin contact."

Original Story: Since the 1950s, it has been standard practice to clamp the umbilical cord within seconds of a baby being born. It was always done this quickly to reduce the risk of the hormonal injection - given to the mother to stop hemorrhaging - on the infant.

However, that drug has since been replaced with a safer substitute, so one midwife, Amanda Burleigh, questioned the need to shut off the blood supply from the placenta so early. In fact, she spent a decade researching the longstanding medical protocol, only to discover that cutting the cord immediately after birth, while it was still pulsating with blood, had negative effects: it deprived the newborn of a third of its blood stock, increased the risk of iron deficiency anemia, and could lead to cognitive learning delays.

Despite receiving backlash and criticism from many in the medical community, her findings made their way to Britain's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, and the organization recently changed its guidelines on umbilical cord clamping.

"I couldn't sit back and ignore what I had seen when it became visible to me," Burleigh said. "I think we'll look back in years to come and realize that immediate cord clamping was not a good idea."

The new best practice is that doctors and midwives should not routinely cut the cord "earlier than one minute from the birth of the baby." It also suggests that waiting from one to five minutes postbirth is fine, or even longer with the mother's request. That might seem like no time at all, but to a newborn baby, every minute counts.

Read the Hilarious Email 1 Student Sent to Her Teacher After Wisdom Teeth Surgery

While some people would sleep all day after getting their wisdom teeth out, one student took the downtime to email her teaching assistant about an approaching deadline. The student, who goes by Abby Jo Hamele on Twitter, ended up sharing the hilarious email she ended up sending while on medication as well as the teacher's response.

As you might expect, the email was full of spelling errors and interesting punctuation. Asking for an extension on her paper, Abby wrote, "Is tehere any way I would be able to send you my paper at any later date???" Adding, "If you say no then that is okay but i would be said and i would reallyyyy lik e if you said yes." The best part might be how she signed off the email with "love you bye."

The hilarious email quickly racked up thousands of retweets and "likes." For those wondering, Abby ended up sharing her teacher's response, shown below.

While he described her email as being "unorthodox," he reassured her that she still had time as the paper wasn't even due for another week. Adding, "I hope your spelling is better in your paper."

As a result of the entire exchange, people on Twitter have praised Abby for sharing the embarrassing (yet incredible) exchange.
