Is Moonlight Based on a True Story? The Answer Is Complicated

If you've seen the Golden Globe-winning drama Moonlight, you know how intensely raw it is. Drenched in genuine emotion, it would be more shocking to find out someone completely made up the story of Chiron than to hear that the events are based on a true story. Thus, it's not surprising that director Barry Jenkins and writer Tarell Alvin McCraney recently admitted to The New York Times that much of the film parallels their own upbringings. Though they only met a few years ago, the men came of age in the same broken-down neighborhood in Florida - and the similarities don't stop there.

McCraney wrote the screenplay in 2003, the same year he first attended Yale University School of Drama and the same year his mother died of AIDS. A mutual friend handed the script to Jenkins, who was interested in making a film about growing up in Florida but didn't want to make it too personal. When he read McCraney's script, he asked the writer to revise the script. McCraney was too busy, so after several years, he adapted the script himself, putting more of his own story into it. Here are the parts of the film from their childhoods that are also in the film.

  • Jenkins and McCraney grew up in Liberty City, one of the poorest parts of Miami. They returned as adults to film Moonlight in Liberty Square, a housing project where they both lived as kids.
  • Both were born to mothers who got pregnant as teenagers, and both of their mothers became addicted to crack, later testing HIV-positive.
  • They attended the same elementary school (and were there at the same time, for a brief period), though only McCraney was bullied the way Chiron is in the film. While McCraney told The New York Times that at one point he "did snap," he wouldn't get into details about whether he had the same type of outburst that Chiron has in the film.
  • A central part of Chiron's story is his lack of understanding and eventual acceptance that he's gay; McCraney told The New York Times that he is "gay-identified."
  • Both McCraney and Jenkins admit that like Chiron, they largely chose to be silent as children. In the movie, it's a defense mechanism for Chiron; the less he says, the less reason his mother has to yell at him.
  • The character of Juan (Mahershala Ali) is inspired by one of McCraney's childhood role models: Blue, his younger brother's father. Blue protected him the way Juan looks after Chiron in the movie until Blue was fatally shot when McCraney was 6 years old.

So while the movie isn't 100 percent true to real life, it does incorporate quite a few elements from the filmmakers' lives, making it all the more poignant.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Has Been Acting Much Longer Than You Think

Last year's brooding, dark thriller Nocturnal Animals only managed to snag one award at Sunday night's Golden Globes. Actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who plays the evil Ray Marcus in the film, joined the winners' list as best supporting actor. Two things may have occurred to you after Taylor-Johnson took the stage to give his acceptance speech. For one, you may have been just as in awe of his handsome looks as we were. Shortly thereafter, you might have thought, "Where have I seen him before?" Turns out, the actor has been around for just about 15 years in Hollywood, and he's got quite a few credits under his belt. Let's hash this out together.

6 Ways to Break Your Caffeine Addiction (and Why You Should)

When your very first thought after your alarm goes off is "I need coffee five minutes ago," you probably already know you're on the verge of a pretty serious addiction to caffeine. There are definitely benefits to sipping one cup a day - it improves memory, it keeps you regular, and the antioxidants can help fight disease - but if your one cup is more like a 24-ounce Big Gulp, that much caffeine can cause some harm.

Just how much caffeine is too much? The limit for the average person is 300 to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day. The average eight-ounce cup of coffee has almost 100 milligrams, but if you go for a 16-ounce Starbucks Grande, you're looking at 330 milligrams. A 12-ounce can of cola offers 35 milligrams of caffeine, Mountain Dew has 55 milligrams, and Red Bull and Rockstar each have about 80 milligrams.

Why is too much caffeine bad? Aside from caffeine jitters, if you consume more than 500 milligrams every day, it can induce anxiety, insomnia, and muscle tremors and can even lead to increased heart rate and blood pressure, headaches, or digestion issues.

Caffeine, like any drug, will cause unbearable withdrawal symptoms such as intense cravings, headaches, irritability, depression, and anxiety. Here are six ways to make cutting down or giving up caffeine a little less painful.

A Nutritional Look at Ghee vs. Butter

Ghee is gaining notoriety in the health world lately, thanks in part to the popularity of Paleo diets. We even predict it'll be one of the most popular healthy foods of 2017. But it's not new - ghee's roots date back centuries in India (ghee is the Hindi word for "fat"), and it has been used in both Ayeurvedic medicine and Indian cooking.

Should you swap your butter for ghee? To find out how it compares to regular old butter, we talked to three dietitians: Sarah Asay, RD at bistroMD; Lisa Eberly, RD, MPH; and Allison Stowell, M.S., RD, CDN, and dietitian for Guiding Stars.

What Is It?

Ghee is clarified butter, meaning the milk solids are removed. "This makes it casein and lactose free, which could be a benefit for some people," said Allison.

If you're lactose sensitive or intolerant, ghee might be an option for you in the kitchen. Sarah said "Given the trace amounts of dairy, this is often a form of butter dairy-sensitive people can tolerate."

In terms of taste and texture, it's somewhat like a butter-flavored coconut oil. You can find ghee in different flavors (we like Fourth & Heart's truffle salt and Madagascar vanilla).

What's the Nutritional Info?

It's pretty comparable to butter, with butter actually being lower in fat and calories, according to Allison. Here's what she shared with us:

  • 1 tablespoon ghee: 135 calories, 15 grams of fat (9 grams of saturated fat), 30 mg cholesterol.
  • 1 tablespoon butter: 100 calories, 11 grams of fat (7 grams of saturated fat), 30 mg cholesterol.

Is It Better Than Butter?

There's some debate; Lisa and Allison don't think so. "Ghee is not 'better for you' as it may be positioned," said Allison, "as it offers more calories, fat, and saturated fat. It may be a good tool for cooking and sautéing, but I would not recommend for your daily breakfast toast."

However, if you're lactose intolerant, ghee might be a better option. "Ghee could be a good option for individuals who prefer a strong buttery taste," Ashley said. If you're craving that flavor but just can't stomach the milk solids, give ghee a shot.

If you've got no dietary restrictions, Lisa recommends grass-fed butter over ghee. "Like ghee, grass-fed butter also has saturated fat, but the fat from grass-fed butter has particular fatty acids that can have digestive effects similar to fiber."

Some studies have also shown that ghee might have the ability to lower bad cholesterol (LDL), which could prevent heart disease. That said, a 2010 study showed that butter and saturated fat didn't necessarily contribute to heart disease, either.

Aside from the health aspect of ghee versus butter, ghee is a more stable oil for cooking. Sarah told us that it has a higher smoke point, meaning it can tolerate higher temperatures than butter can. "When cooking with butter, you may have noticed it burns easily and begins to smoke. This is due to the milk solids present in butter. Since ghee has this component removed, it can tolerate much higher heat than its unclarified counterpart."
You can also store ghee in your cabinet, and it has a longer shelf life. Unlike butter, ghee can be stored at room temperature and will last for months.

The Twin Peaks Revival Has a Premiere Date!

We first heard of Showtime's Twin Peaks revival all the way back in October 2014. Early excitement revved up quickly, but the reboot of the freaky cult classic hit some snags soon after when David Lynch tweeted that he was pulling out. Everything is back on, though, with Showtime President David Nevins announcing the 2017 premeire date at TCA this week. Find out that and everything else we know about the Twin Peaks revival here.

You Will Never Look at Jalapeños the Same Way After Learning This Fact

Did you know chiles have different names depending on whether they are fresh or dried? What?! I know. I'm as startled as you are. You are probably familiar with jalapeños as well as chipotle (likely in adobo sauce), but did you know they are the same pepper? It's true. Look it up! Jalapeños are kept longer on the vine, until they ripen to a deep red color and are then smoked and dried. Once that process is complete, they are known as chipotle. Some other shockers for you: poblano peppers become ancho when dried, and serranos become dried red chiles.

Leighton Meester and Adam Brody Make a Rare Yet Delightful Appearance After the Golden Globes

Leighton Meester and Adam Brody shone like the stars they are when they hit up the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes afterparty in LA on Sunday night. Leighton looked absolutely gorgeous in a plunging-neckline dress, while Adam kept things cool in a suit as one of the many men rocking a beard at the event. The notoriously private couple struck a cute pose backstage for photographers, and Leighton even joined Lea Michele, Nina Dobrev, Renee Elise Goldsberry, and Derek and Julianne Hough for a fun selfie. While Leighton and Adam have likely been busy taking care of their 1-year-old daughter, Arlo Day, Leighton has also been gearing up for the premiere of Fox's Making History, while Adam has been working on his upcoming movie, Chips.

Olivia Palermo's Secret to Beating Winter Chill Is in These 7 Coats

Olivia Palermo has one of the strongest coat collections we've ever seen. Based on her street style looks, we found a good mix of statement fur pieces and dressed-down options like puffers, too. Naturally, Olivia pulls off all these outerwear styles with ease. That's probably because she has a knack for zeroing in on what makes a coat special, whether it's the buttons or pockets, and she pays attention to the fit on her silhouette.

Though we know Olivia has more coats than we can count, we've narrowed down the seven most practical and stylish ones for Winter. You also don't have to look far for similar shopping picks, since we took the inspiration from her closet and included some cool coat selections below.

7 Gel Manicure Mistakes That Are Ruining Your Nails

There are many reasons I love a gel manicure, but a few in particular stand out. I'm obsessed that they require zero drying time, which equates to zero probability of smudging. They last for at least two weeks. That enduring glossy finish gets me to book salon visits over and over again. But when it comes time to take off the lacquer, I admittedly get a little lazy. When choosing between squeezing a removal appointment into a busy schedule or picking and peeling on my way home from work, I'm often guilty of the latter.

It turns out that's not the only error I've been making when it comes to gel polish. Chances are, you - and your favorite salon! - are making some of them, too. That's precisely why I enlisted the help of celebrity manicurist Elle. The nail tech (who has painted the talons of Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Blake Lively) revealed that seemingly simple things can cause your gels and natural nails to prematurely crack and peel. But when applied and cared for correctly, these glossy lacquers aren't harmful to your claws at all. Read on to discover her top nail-saving tips.

20 Warming Lunches That Won't Break the Bank

Eating a cold salad for lunch on a chilly Winter day is a little heartbreaking, isn't it? Ditch the cold veggies and opt for these warming lunch recipes that you'll actually look forward to eating throughout the cold months. The best part? They won't break the bank. Save money and nourish your cold self when lunchtime rolls around with these 20 satisfying recipes.

Tom Hiddleston Apologizes For His "Inelegantly Expressed" Golden Globes Speech

At Sunday night's Golden Globe Awards in LA, Tom Hiddleston struck gold. The actor joined the winners' list for his role on The Night Manager, but as soon as he stepped on stage to give his acceptance speech, things took a strange turn. Tom shared a longer story about his humanitarian work in Sudan and revealed that many of the people he encountered there love his miniseries. If the audience reactions weren't clear enough, it would seem Tom's words didn't quite have the desired effect. After the ceremony, the actor made it clear that he, too, sensed the moment's awkwardness.

In a new statement on his official Facebook page, the actor admitted that his speech was "inelegantly expressed" and that his nerves "got the better" of him. His main intent, he explained, was to shine a spotlight on the brave souls who work for UNICEF UK, Doctors Without Borders, and World Food Programme. Read his post in full below.

14 Times Ben and Casey Affleck Showed Brotherly Love

Casey Affleck has been garnering headlines and praise for his role in Manchester by the Sea and has already taken home a Critics' Choice award and Golden Globe for the powerful performance (unfortunately, the 41-year-old actor is also currently at the center of some pretty serious sexual assault allegations). It's likely that Casey has the support of his older brother, Ben Affleck, throughout his roller-coaster year. The pair stepped out together for a screening of Manchester by the Sea in November, and Ben was also in attendance at the Globes when Casey won his best actor in a drama award. Ben and Casey have shared many moments together in Hollywood, working together both in front of and behind the camera. Ben is certainly no stranger to award season glory, and they also both happen to be going through divorces after 10 years of marriage - Ben and Jennifer Garner famously split in 2015, while Casey and his wife, Summer Phoenix, announced their breakup in March 2016. Keep reading to see Ben and Casey's show of brotherly love over the years.

Despite her regal title, there's something pretty down to earth about Kate Middleton - we've tracked enough of her "unroyal" moments to know. These Brutally Honest Parenting Comics Will Crack You Up

Brian Gordon - a cartoonist and dad of two - has been making fun of being a parent since he became one. In an attempt to keep himself sane and bond with other parents, he shamelessly started creating funny-because-it's-true parenting comics - and we can't stop laughing at them.

As soon as he brought his first child home from the hospital, Brian convinced himself that he was the worst parent ever, that is, until he started sharing his insecurities with other parents, who completely identified with his struggles. From there on, he decided to start documenting anything and everything about parenting - from being exhausted to being spit-up on for the hundredth time - through cartoons, and it's now his favorite thing to do.

"Being a parent can be incredibly frustrating, and I think sharing those frustrations and laughing with other parents is the best thing we can do to keep each other sane," Brian told us. And keeping us all sane, he is. His comics have been so successful in the parenting world that he was able to compile his comics into his first book, which should undoubtedly be centered among the pile of kid crap on every parent's coffee table.

Read through to see some of Brian's hilarious comics, preorder his book before its March 22 release, become a patron of his work to see behind-the-scenes strips, shop his designs at Society6 and Zazzle, and visit him regularly for new comics.

14 Things You Probably Didn't Know About La La Land

La La Land is causing a fan frenzy this award season. Not only does it feature a star-studded cast, but it is also bringing back musicals in a big way. Even if you're already familiar with the enchanting music and the romantic story, there are quite a few interesting tidbits about the film you probably didn't know. Was Ryan Gosling really playing the piano during the movie? And why is Emma Stone's dress yellow? Find out below.

21 Outfits Kate Middleton Has Worn That Definitely Don't Scream "Princess!"

Based on her track record, it may be hard to believe Kate ever donned something that could raise eyebrows, but every once in a while we've caught her ditching her sophisticated brand of dressing for something a little more casual. From outings in lazy-day hoodies to laid-back blue jeans, we love seeing proof that sometimes Kate can mix it up.

While we may love Kate's foray into casualwear, we have a feeling the Queen wouldn't approve of these not-so-princessy pieces. Just try to imagine Queen Elizabeth donning the same sporty separates, sneakers, or funky hats - we all know, it just wouldn't happen. So while we're under the impression that it's basically impossible for Kate to wear a bad outfit, it's fun to imagine how the royals really felt when they saw these, ahem, nontraditional styles.

This School District Shut Down Every Student Asking For a Snow Day in the Most Hilarious Tweets Ever

When students from the Cherokee County School District in Georgia saw the rare opportunity for a snow day last week, they took to Twitter to express their excitement. But when the surrounding districts gave their students a day off and the Cherokee students still had school, they tweeted at the district's Twitter account, having no idea that the person running the account was a hilariously savage person, ready to unleash a fury of sarcasm shutting down their requests for a snow day.

Although the parents of the district may have been relieved that there was no snow day, the kids would not give up their persistent begging and bribing for the day off. One student offered to give the person running the account a dollar for the day off, to which the district responded, "$1?? Who do you think I am, McDonalds?" - and that was only the start.

Keep reading to see some of the incredible responses from the Cherokee School District, and prepare to laugh.

Meet Mandy Moore, the La La Land Choreographer Who Is Not THAT Mandy Moore

At Sunday night's Golden Globe Awards, everyone seemed to be a bit confused to find out that a certain Mandy Moore had choreographed award season darling, La La Land. We know where your head is going: you mean like, that Mandy Moore? We're talking about noted dancer and choreographer Mandy Moore, who may share the same name as her industry sister, but is, in actuality, someone completely different. Allow us to break it down for you.

Moore has worked on plenty of movies prior to this, including Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, and Joy. So, you know, next time someone praises the stunning choreography in La La Land, you'll know exactly what to say: "No, not that one."

Why Doesn't Lily Collins Have a British Accent? We're Genuinely Asking

Image Source: Getty / Michael Kovac

Something that has been bothering us for a while now (besides, you know, climate-change deniers, bars that don't serve Rosé, and when something in the sale section isn't actually on sale) is the fact that Lily Collins, ubertalented actress and owner of some of the best brows in the business, doesn't have a British accent. That sounds like a nonsensical thing to be bothered by, because it is, but bear with us: even though her father is British and she did have an accent in the 2014 film Love, Rosie, Lily does not, in fact, have a British accent IRL. And we just feel like she should.

Lily's father is, of course, the great English singer and former Genesis frontman Phil Collins. Her mother is Jill Tavelman, Phil's second wife and the former president of the Beverly Hills Women's Club. The 27-year-old was born in Surrey, England, where she lived until she was 7; when her parents divorced, Lily moved to LA with her mom. Obviously she spent more time in the States than in the UK growing up, but we still just feel like an accent would suit her so well. She's got the milky-white skin, bold brows, and dark features of an English rose, she is so poised and polished in interviews, and she fills that British It-girl role so perfectly.

Lily brought her American mom with her to the Golden Globes on Sunday, where she was nominated for best actress in a motion picture, musical, or comedy for her role in Rules Don't Apply. During a red carpet interview with E!'s Giuliana Rancic, Lily talked about growing up in nearby Beverly Hills and gushed about being at the show for the first time: "I brought my mom as my date and I'm just really excited honestly," she said. "Meryl Streep knows my name now so that for me is enough."

24 Movies That Are Turning 20 Years Old This Year

Now that 2016 has (thankfully) come to an end, it's time to look forward to what lies ahead in 2017. But how can we look forward without getting a little nostalgic about where we've been? Once the New Year hit, a whole new selection of movies officially became two decades old. All of Brendan Fraser's shirtless glory in George of the Jungle? One of Robin Williams's most iconic roles in Good Will Hunting? All that heartbreak from Titanic? It's all turning 20 this year. And that's just the tip of the iceberg . . . pun intended.

Kate's Wardrobe Evolution: From Middleton to Royal Mom

Sure, the diamonds and designer pieces are built to last, but a simple jean skirt and high street labels have also made the grade. So what did she wear clubbing before she was married and later select for one of the most formal events in the royal calendar? And which slinky party dress has been spotted underneath a more conservative coat at a recent engagement? We've rounded up all the items that have worked just as well for both private citizen and public princess . . .

The 6 Most Tragic Twists From This Is Us

Oh, I'm sorry - were you looking for a feel-good show? This Is Us is not that. Sure, there are moments of happiness, but name one episode that left you feeling warm and fuzzy instead of heartbroken . . . and we're only halfway through the first season. Despite this, we keep going back for more, because we love the Pearson family. We don't want bad things to happen to them - they just seem to happen literally all the time. Before the show returns on Tuesday, let's recount the six most devastating moments. Spoilers ahead!

Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell's First and Most Recent Golden Globes Appearances, Side by Side

Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell showed off their three-decade-long romance when they attended the Golden Globe Awards in LA on Sunday night, but this was definitely not their first time at the rodeo. The couple, who have famously never married, looked more in love than ever when they held onto each other while posing for photos on the red carpet. While we love seeing them step out together now, we also love reminiscing about some of their earlier appearances together. Kurt and Goldie graced that very same Globes carpet nearly 20 years ago in 1998, and in addition to them still looking as amazing as they did then, they also still share that sweet chemistry. See the side-by-side of their earliest and most recent Golden Globes appearances above!

Your Child's Favorite Book Was Actually Written by a Woman Who Hates Kids

Goodnight Moon was my favorite book as a child, and in a hilarious turn of events, I just found out that the author actually hated kids. The classic book is a total staple on kiddo bookshelves all over the world with it's famous opening line ("In the great green room . . . ") and adorable illustrations, but as it turns out, Margaret Wise Brown didn't always want to be a children's book writer.

Revealed in Amy Gary's biography of Brown, In the Great Green Room, and reported on by the NY Post, Brown felt ignored as a child by her wealthy, distracted parents, which went on to affect her career. She aspired to be "America's next great novelist," but discovered while working at a school that her stories engaged and resonated with young children.

After she sold one of her stories to a major publishing company and became a success, she claimed that she "harbored a deep insecurity about her career" and eventually wanted to move on to write "real" literature, but felt held back by her childhood. "I hope to write something serious one day as soon as I have something to say," she said, "But I am stuck in my childhood, and that raises the devil when one wants to move on."

Although the ideas for her classic books came easily to her - The Runaway Bunny popped into her head while she was skiing - and were beloved by children, she herself wasn't especially taken with her demographic. "I don't especially like children . . . at least not as a group," she said. "I won't let anybody get away with anything just because he's little."

Another surprising tidbit about Goodnight Moon involves its inspiration, which came after the breakup of a lesbian affair Brown was having with a married woman, Blanche Oelrichs, also known by the name Michael Strange. Heartbroken and recovering from a surgery, Brown took to her house in Maine and wrote a poem about a girl who finds comfort in her thoughts of her childhood room. Two years later and back with Strange again, "the poem returned to her in a dream" and went on to become Goodnight Moon.

Although Brown passed away as a result of a blood clot in 1952, Goodnight Moon was published for the first time in 1953. The timeless classic currently sells over 800,000 copies a year despite its bold author's dislike of children and its arguably unorthodox inspiration. Who would have thunk it?

6 Fascinating and Haunting Facts About the JonBenét Ramsey Murder Case

This year marks 21 years since 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenét Ramsey was found murdered in her family home, and the cold case is still just as captivating as it was in December 1996. JonBenét's father, John, was the one who found her body on Christmas Day in the basement of their Boulder, CO, home roughly eight hours after her parents reported her missing after they found a ransom note. An autopsy of JonBenét's body later revealed that she was struck in the head and strangled to death.

Because the 20-year anniversary just passed, interest in the case is once again picking up steam. A number of TV specials aired, including The Killing of JonBenét: The Truth Uncovered, JonBenét: An American Murder Mystery, The Case Of: JonBenét Ramsey, and Who Killed JonBenét?. Netflix has picked up a documentary called Casting JonBenét, which will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Here are six facts about one of the most haunting and heartbreaking murders in recent history:

1. JonBenét suffered a horrific death.

The stunning little girl was found wrapped in her white blanket with a nylon cord around her neck, her wrists tied above her head, and duct tape over her mouth. Evidence later showed that she was hit over the head with a blunt object, which knocked her unconscious. Sometime between 45 minutes to two hours after she was knocked out, she was strangled to death with a piece of cord and the handle from a broken paintbrush. Police also later confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted.

2. The ransom note posed more questions than answers.

JonBenét's mother, Patsy, told police that she realized her daughter was missing after she found a two-and-a-half-page ransom note in their home. The letter demanded the Ramseys pay $118,000 for their daughter's safe return, which was also almost the exact amount her father, John, had recently received as a work bonus. Police later determined that the note was written on a piece of paper from a notebook inside the Ramsey home. Both John and Patsy then underwent handwriting tests, and while police were able to say that John didn't write it, Patsy's test results were labeled "inconclusive."

3. There was no sign of a break-in.

Police found no signs of forced entry in or around the Ramsey home. The only people known to have been in the house on the night of the murder were Patsy, John, and JonBenét's older brother, Burke, who was 9 years old at the time.

4. Police were criticized for making crucial mistakes.

Shortly after police arrived, they failed to completely seal off the crime scene, allowing family members and friends to enter and leave the house. Critics of the case also claim that investigators failed to gather sufficient forensic evidence before and after JonBenét's body was found. Many people believe this is because they had already made up their minds that the Ramseys were guilty and didn't feel the need to gather evidence proving otherwise.

5. Both of JonBenét's parents as well as her older brother, Burke, were considered suspects.

Because it seemed so unlikely that kidnappers would kill their victim, leave the body in their own home, and still leave behind a ransom note, police were quick to turn their suspicions to John, Patsy, and Burke. Boulder police believed for many years that on the night of the murder, Patsy injured JonBenét in a fit of rage and either killed her while still angry or killed her to cover up the injury. In 1999, a Colorado grand jury voted to indict Patsy and John because they believed they were abusive toward their daughter, which eventually led to murder. In 2008, two years after Patsy died of ovarian cancer, prosecutors officially cleared the family of any wrongdoing. Burke also recently sat down for an interview with Dr. Phil about the case, which will air in mid-September.

6. There is still unexplained DNA evidence.

In December 2003, investigators retested a blood sample found on JonBenét's underwear, which was revealed to belong to an unidentified male who was not related to the Ramsey family. To this day, investigators have not been able to identify who the DNA belongs to, and the case remains open.

Paris Jackson Is All Grown Up and Gorgeous at a Golden Globes Afterparty

Paris Jackson looked every bit the star when she popped up at the Warner Bros. and InStyle party after the Golden Globes in LA on Sunday night. The 18-year-old posed for photos in a pretty floral gown and showed off her rocker-cool blonde 'do and many tattoos for photographers. Paris was joined at the soiree by her pal Sofia Richie, who planted a sweet smooch on her before they headed inside. The girls' friendship comes as no surprise, as their fathers, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, were also very close; Michael was even named as one of Nicole Richie's godparents, along with legendary music producer Quincy Jones. Paris recently spent time with her godfather, actor Macaulay Culkin, and shared an Instagram snap of her giving him a pedicure before the holidays.

How to Make the Perfect Cheesy Scrambled Eggs For 1

There are so many ways to make scrambled eggs, but this method is hands down my favorite, mostly because it involves cheese. I firmly believe that cheddar cheese instantly takes scrambled eggs from completely blah to truly tasty - it's the only time I'll make scrambled instead of fried. If you, too, are team cheesy scrambled eggs and want to know how to make the perfect plate just for yourself, follow these step-by-step directions for a satisfying breakfast you can make in under 10 minutes.

Here's what you'll need: two large eggs, 1/4 cup sharp shredded cheddar cheese (preferably freshly grated cheese from a block of extra sharp cheddar - it tastes better and melts better than cheese from a bag), salt, pepper, butter, and fresh chives (optional but highly recommended - the flavor of cheddar and chives is one of the best). First, get all your ingredients prepped and ready to go because the process moves really quickly once you begin. Crack two eggs into a bowl, grate the cheese, and finely chop about 1/2 tablespoon of fresh chives to save for garnish.

Whisk the eggs with a fork until frothy and smooth, and add a scant 1/8 teaspoon of kosher salt and slightly less black pepper. Whisk to combine.

Heat your best nonstick skillet over medium-low heat and wait until it's heated through, about three minutes. Add one tablespoon butter (or ghee, aka clarified butter), and swirl to coat the pan. Immediately add the eggs (you don't want to give the butter a chance to brown), and grab a silicone spatula. A silicone spatula is hands down the best tool for scrambling eggs because its smooth surface ensures no eggs stick to the spatula.

Begin gently moving the eggs around, and you'll see curds starting to form immediately. Scrape the eggs from the outer edges of the pan into the center, and continue to gently move your spatula - don't stop moving the eggs the whole time. When the eggs are still a little wet, add all of the cheese and fold in carefully. Cook for just a few seconds more, and then turn off the heat (the residual heat will continue to cook the eggs). Plate the eggs and garnish with the chopped chives, if using. Serve immediately, and congratulate yourself on mastering one of the best breakfasts! You can double or triple the recipe if you're feeding others, but be warned - they'll ask you for your secret.
