Remembering These Heart Attack Symptoms Could Mean the Difference Between Life and Death

Spotting heart attack symptoms early can potentially save a life. How do you spot them? Our friends at YourTango share their story.

Pay attention.

The recent deaths of Carrie Fisher (due to a heart attack) and George Michael (due to heart failure) bring this year to a close with even more significant grief and loss.

Now, more than ever, it's important to remember that heart disease is the number one cause of death not just for African-American and white women in the United States, but for people of most ethnicities when statistics by genders are combined.

While we tend to think of heart disease as an issue affecting only older adults, some forms - such as Cardiovascular disease (CVD) - may begin during childhood.

Evidence of fatty deposits in heart valves - a sign of CVD that can develop into multiple serious problems later in life - has been found in children as young as in infancy. When we are still young the build of these deposits typically develops without any obvious symptoms, so identifying and managing the known risk factors from the very start of life is crucial. In addition to possible hereditary factors, hormonal changes, fatty foods, alcohol, smoking, and variables such as anemia, a sedentary lifestyle, and traditional American dietary habits today subject our hearts to stress at an increasingly unprecedented level.

The wide variety of heart and cardiovascular diseases causes a good deal of confusion.

For example, while many of us think the terms 'cardiac arrest' and 'heart attack' are one and the same, they are actually quite different from one another.

According to The American Heart Association:

"A heart attack occurs when a blocked artery prevents oxygen-rich blood from reaching a section of the heart. If the blocked artery is not reopened quickly, the part of the heart normally nourished by that artery begins to die. The longer a person goes without treatment, the greater the damage. Symptoms of a heart attack may be immediate and intense. More often, though, symptoms start slowly and persist for hours, days or weeks before a heart attack. Unlike with sudden cardiac arrest, the heart usually does not stop beating during a heart attack...

Sudden cardiac arrest occurs suddenly and often without warning. It is triggered by an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). With its pumping action disrupted, the heart cannot pump blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. Seconds later, a person loses consciousness and has no pulse. Death occurs within minutes if the victim does not receive treatment."

People commonly think of heart attack symptoms as pain radiating down the left arm and tightening of the chest. However, the symptoms and causes of heart attack in women are can be quite different than those experienced by men. Because of this, women sometimes ignore their flu-like heart attack symptoms when they first arise.

When symptoms are caught early, heart attacks CAN be stopped before they happen, as the signs typically develop over time before the heart attack occurs.

Heart attack symptoms in men may include:

  • Chest pain
  • Chest discomfort
  • Chest pressure
  • Discomfort or pain in other areas, such as one or both arms, the neck, jaw, back, or stomach
  • Shortness of breath, lightheadedness, nausea, or sweating
  • Abdominal discomfort that may feel like heartburn

Heart attack symptoms in women may include:

  • Uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the center of your chest. It lasts more than a few minutes, or goes away and comes back.
  • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort.
  • Other signs such as breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.
  • As with men, women's most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort.

The great new is that there are ways to prevent heart disease, reverse prior heart damage, and encourage healthy cardiovascular heath overall.

Here is a list of six actions you can take now to improve your heart health:

1. If you're a smoker, stop smoking.

2. Eat more fiber, veggies, and fruit.

3. Avoid processed and fried foods.

4. Exercise daily.

5. Lose weight if your waistline is greater than 35 inches.

6. Visit your doctor at least once a year and have your triglycerides and cholesterol checked.

If you have a family history of diabetes and heart disease, be aware that you become increasing more vulnerable once you reach the age of 40. Make sure your physician is aware of this and any other known risk factors.

The bottom line is that we need to take our heart health seriously and prevent heart attacks before they start.

Tune into your body signals when they happen, because every moment counts.

A 2-Week Vacation With His Kids Changed 1 Dad's Entire Parenting Perspective

The following article was written by Ben Stahl, the husband of POPSUGAR Moms contributor Kate Stahl, with a few loving edits from his grammatically superior wife.

I think of myself as an involved father. I am home by 6 p.m. most nights. I change out of my suit and tie, eat the dinner my wife has prepared (the fact that she's such a good cook was a postmarriage surprise and one I'm extremely grateful for), and jump into it with the kids.

Most nights I send my wife, who stays home with our kids, upstairs for a breather while I play with our son, who's almost 3, and our daughter, who turns 6 in April. Then I finish cleaning the kitchen, bathe our little monsters, and put one of our kids to bed while my wife takes the other. I know a lot of dads who leave before their kids are up and aren't home until after they're asleep, but it's important to me to be a big part of their lives. On the weekends, I do my best to make sure my wife gets time to rest and do her own thing while I take over some of the parenting duties.

However, I'll admit that even those two hours and weekends with our wild, meltdown-prone children often leave me feeling exhausted. It's hard to imagine how, most days, my wife tacks on another 11 or so hours solo with them and doesn't end the day in the huddling in the fetal position or throwing back a bottle of wine (though I'll admit, I've seen her do both a time or two).

The truth is, I think my wife is much better at being with the kids than I am. She has more practice, more patience, more stamina. She's totally in tune with their needs. I like the setup we have. Yes, it's pretty gender normative and traditional, but it works for us. I make the bulk of the money our lives require while she takes care of the house and, most importantly and exhaustingly, the kids.

So the thought of taking two weeks off work over the holidays to go on vacation with my family left me feeling a little anxious. I was thrilled to break from my routine, shed the tie for a while, and get some quality time with my kids, but I also knew that quality time would be far from stress-free. I've traveled with our kids enough to know that new beds also mean less sleep, relaxing their schedule can also mean more tantrums (a 2-year-old is a 2-year-old, no matter how close you are to the beach), and when we're on vacation, my wife expects me to do half of all that work that she's so much better at. But 13 days later, I left our trip with a new perspective on my wife and on parenting.

Thirteen days later, I left our trip with a new perspective on my wife and on parenting.

First I realized just how much my kids want to be with me. Those two hours I spend with them during the week are chaotic and stressful mostly because we're all tired, but they're also acting crazy because they're so excited to see me. With a huge chunk of time, we were all able to mellow a bit and just enjoy each other without the constant "Daddy, Daddy, Daddy, watch this, watch this . . ." that I'm so used to hearing. I realized that having the time to engage with my kids more actually made all of our time together (OK, most of it) better.

At the pool one day, my son introduced me to another little boy not as his dad but as his "best friend" (heartbreaker). I got to see my daughter, who's only halfway through kindergarten, playing Head's Up with a group of adults and totally holding her own. I realized that they are not just endless buckets of need but high-functioning humans who were no longer essentially ruining my vacation, but actually adding to it.

But part of being my son's new "best friend" meant that he barely left my side for the entirety of our trip. Actually, scratch that - my side would have been nice. Instead, he was crawling on my head, pinching my neck, and Hulk-smashing my whole body. Suddenly, I understood why my wife isn't always so into cuddling with me after the kids go to bed and that being "overtouched" wasn't a word she made up, but a real concept.

Finally, though I realized that spending all day, every day with your kids is a blessing, it is just as draining as I had expected. Not because the whole day is awful (most of it is pretty great), but because there is literally no downtime. When they're happy, they need you. When they're erupting, they need you. When they're hungry, sad, hurt, tired, cold, wet, or feeling silly . . . they need you. So from now on, I'm not going to roll my eyes when my wife tells me she's going to go hide for a while after I get home. In fact, I might even deliver her a glass of wine.

12 Curly Hair Hacks That Will Completely Change Your Life

Having curly hair brings me such joy. The springy ringlets are indicative of my large personality, but I didn't always know how to care for my coils. About eight years ago, I was clueless about all the unwritten rules (like no more shampoo, brushes, or towels.) And the commandments vary by hair type, too. A woman with waves can't live by the same hacks that I rely on day to day for my Afro-texture hair.

That's why we've called in the curly hair experts from Devachan Salon in NYC to create a beginner's bible to curls. Stylist Eladia Lebron gave three curly editors a makeover, while divulging her best tips for every hair type. This comprehensive guide explains everything from applying conditioner to pineappling (which is an overnight curly girl trick). Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell Flaunt Their 3-Decade-Long Romance at the Golden Globes

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are one of Hollywood's sweetest couples, and while attending the Golden Globe Awards together on Sunday night, they proved why. After Goldie shared a hilarious photo of her getting ready for their glitzy night out on Instagram, she hit the red carpet with Kurt. Both of them got close for some romantic poses for photographers, before the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 actor stepped back to give Goldie her moment in the spotlight. Later on, Goldie took a second to bond with a pint-sized admirer (so cute!) and share a few laughs with her Snatched costar, Amy Schumer. Of all the gorgeous couples who showed up to the Globes, Kurt and Goldie left us swooning hardest.

The Bachelor: The Ladies Who Are Still Competing For Nick Viall

We're a couple weeks into Nick Viall's season of The Bachelor, and I'm pretty disgruntled at the fact that we didn't get a rose ceremony in the second damn episode. There were a ton of lovely women hoping to get a rose, but before we could see who he wanted to keep and send away forever, he let someone go preemptively. Take a look at everyone, including the girl who was most recently eliminated, below.

15 People Who Cannot Deal With the New Bachelor Villain, Corinne

We're two episodes into The Bachelor, and the producers have very clearly defined the season's villain: her name is Corinne, and she's the best. She's young, incredibly good looking, and was confident enough to take off her top for a wedding-themed photoshoot on the first date with Nick. Also, she repeatedly stole him from the rest of the girls . . . then got mad at one of the other girls for interrupting them. Like I said, she's the best.

Twitter at large can't help but compare her to Olivia, suggest that she strike up a relationship with Chad, and/or pitch a spinoff show starring her and her nanny. While we're still trying to get to the bottom of her family business, take a look at the best reactions - good and bad - to our new favorite bad girl, Corinne Olympios. Disclaimer: Let's all acknowledge that 95 percent of The Bachelor is tricky editing, so Corinne might actually be the nicest person in the world.

Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet Make Their First Red Carpet Appearance in Over a Year

Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa proved that they still know how to work a red carpet when they stepped out for the LA premiere of Live by Night on Monday. The couple - who is going on ten years of marriage - were the epitome of cool as they held hands and allowed photographers to snap their photos. Lisa and Jason's night out marks the first time the pair has hit a red carpet together in over a year. The last time these two strutted their stuff was at the InStyle Awards back in October 2015. Oh, how we've missed them.

7 Things People Who Lose Weight Do Every Day

Big changes can be made from small but smart habits - this includes weight loss! The American Institute for Cancer Research recently shared its best tips for healthy weight loss, and we couldn't agree with them more. In fact, we've seen dozens of success stories of people who have implemented these tips and habits. Here's how they work and how you can apply them to your life.

1. Set Small Goals

Lee Jordan didn't lose 300 pounds by saying, "I'm going to lose 300 pounds." His first goal? "Walking down the hall for 30 seconds." At 450 pounds, Lee described a short walk down the hall as "the Olympics." But by setting small goals, little by little, he lost an absolutely jaw-dropping amount of weight and saved his life.

"If your resolutions are overly ambitious or vague, you may find yourself overwhelmed and slipping up early in the year," said AICR in a press release. "Make concrete, measurable goals and schedule tasks into your day to help you achieve them."

A woman named Becca who lost over 100 pounds said she would've laughed at you years ago if you'd told her she'd be a half-marathoner. She started with the small goal of being able to run for an entire commercial break of a TV program, slowly building up and adding one minute at a time to her PR, before doing 5Ks and half marathons.

Set small goals for yourself daily that you know are achievable and within reach. Whether it's "add one more minute to my exercise time" or "make one healthy recipe today," one small positive action begets another.

2. Eat Veggies

Another woman who lost over 100 pounds also did so by making small changes. Brooke added a green vegetable to every single meal throughout the day, and her consistency with adding those nutrients into her diet helped make a significant impact on her overall habits and her health.

We noticed that this addition of veggies is a major habit among nearly everyone we've ever interviewed about weight loss; experts also agree it's the best way to lose weight. Some of the people we interviewed admitted that they had never tried certain veggies before their weight-loss journey began. "I found out that I love asparagus," said Amanda, who lost 86 pounds. "I'd never had it before! How did I go my whole life without eating asparagus?"

The AICR said: "Instead of denying yourself the foods you love, focus on replacing some with nutritious, healthful foods." Veggies are low in calories yet will keep you full. "Filling up on these can help curb your appetite while you're watching your weight." Whether you're making swaps throughout the day like Kara, who lost 30 pounds in four months (she has spinach in her morning smoothies, big salads for lunch, and zucchini noodles for dinner), or finishing your day with tons of vegetables for dinner like Taylor (who also lost 30 pounds), this small choice can help you lose major weight.

3. Move

It's no secret that more movement leads to more weight-loss success. "Regular physical activity [is] a key component when trying to maintain or lose weight," said AICR. And movement doesn't necessarily mean gym time.

Katie lost over 200 pounds, and her workout routine is simply walking. Brooke (mentioned earlier) hit her goal by setting a Fitbit step goal of 10,000 steps a day and sticking to that consistently.

If you're ready for more than walking and hoping to build muscle tone and get strong, too, start experimenting with different types of exercise. Courtney and Caitlin work out six to seven days a week and lost 75 and 25 pounds, respectively.

4. Practice Portion Control

This daily habit takes some consciousness and mindfulness when it comes to eating. "Portion sizes are big in America," said AICR. And if you dial in your portions, you could shed some serious weight. "Recent studies suggest that several strategies using portion awareness can all result in meaningful weight loss over a year's time."

Although 55-year-old Luz had been active her whole life, she was about 150 pounds overweight. It wasn't until she learned to get control of her overeating that she lost a significant amount of weight. During chemo treatment for cervical cancer, Luz learned to control portions, which created lasting, healthy habits contributing to her massive weight loss.

Slow down, be conscious of how much you're eating, put your fork down in between bites, and don't let your eyes be bigger than your stomach!

5. Don't Drink Calories

Is your vice sugary soda or alcohol? Time to cut ties. "Sugary soda and alcohol both add extra calories without beneficial nutrients," said AICR. "For each sugary drink that you swap out for water or another zero-calorie choice, you'll save 100 to 300 calories. Plus, alcohol by itself is linked to increased risk for several cancers, including breast and colorectal."

While Lee Jordan was on his 300-pound weight-loss journey, he noted that cutting sugary soda out was a crucial piece of his weight-loss puzzle. We also spoke with a woman named Brittany who before her wedding made no changes to her diet or exercise routine but just cut out alcohol - and she lost between five and 10 pounds in a matter of two months.

It may be a tough change at first, but take Amanda's word for it when she said it gets easier: "Your taste buds completely change once you stop eating all the added sugar." Try swapping in as much water as possible, as staying hydrated can also help you feel satiated.

6. Snack Better

People who lose weight don't have to cut out snacks, they just snack smarter. Celebrity personal trainer Chase Weber credits healthy snacks as a way to prevent sugar binges, saying, "if you get into a routine of reaching for these options, you'll avoid the pitfalls of sugary snacks [and] deceptive 'nutrition' shakes."

Follow Kara's lead (remember all her veggies throughout the day?): snack on veggies and hummus or even an apple with peanut butter. These healthier snacks (with a good balance of healthy fats and protein) will keep you from making poorer food choices.

7. Balance Cardio With Weight Training

A mix of cardio with resistance and weight training is the most effective way to lose weight with exercise. The AICR said, "working strength training into your schedule a few times a week can help you build muscle and burn calories. It's a great way to mix up your fitness routine and prevent injuries."

Speaking of mixing it up, a well-rounded fitness routine was the key to weight-loss success for Sarah and Caitlin. In fact, many of the women (and men) we spoke with credited a varied exercise schedule for their shed pounds. Brittany Dawn noted that "things clicked for me when I got into weightlifting" - and she lost 50 pounds.

Have ACV in Your Pantry? Here Are 5 Ways to Use It

Apple cider vinegar is known to be a major weight-loss booster, but are you using it to its fullest potential? This pantry staple can be utilized for many recipes and meals beyond your standard "ACV shots" (which are not that great for you anyway). Plus, if you can't stand the sour taste but still want to enjoy all of its healing powers, we've got a few ways to mask the flavor, too.

  1. Weight-Loss- and Immune-Boosting Drinks: Sweeten it up with honey or stevia, or spice it up with cinnamon or cayenne. ACV drinks bring the miraculous powers of this fermented liquid to your diet in a safer way than shots do.
  2. Salad Dressing: If you're not ready for the tangy, tart taste in a drink, try it in a salad-dressing recipe in lieu of balsamic vinegar.
  3. Baking Recipes: You can avoid the tart taste altogether and fluff up your baking recipes with a little apple cider vinegar. Try it in a lightened-up cake recipe that tastes as decadent as the Starbucks original.
  4. Dairy-Free Buttermilk: Speaking of baking, did you know that you can create a dairy-free buttermilk with ACV? As mentioned, it's great for baking and when you mix it with some dairy-free milk, you can hack all of your favorite baking recipes to veganify them or use it in a batch of weekend pancakes.
  5. Soups: Try using ACV in your soup recipes. Try it in a bone broth, as it can help with digestion (and bone broth is inherently gut-nourishing), or in a chickpea soup or a detoxifying green soup.

12 Ways to Boost Your Mood Right Now

Feeling blah? There are so many quick fixes for a not-so-awesome mood . . . and many of them take mere moments and minimal effort. Though we think exercise might be the best way to cure a bad day, we've got plenty more tips for your mental health (tasty food included).

The film, which was written and directed by Ben himself, takes place in the roaring 1920s and hits theaters Jan. 13.

Everything That Has Happened Since Angelina Jolie Filed For Divorce From Brad Pitt

Image Source: Getty / Target Presse Agentur Gmbh

This post has been updated with new information.

Fans were thrown for a loop when news broke in September 2016 that Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt after 11 years of being together. Although the By the Sea actress has yet to personally speak out on the matter, her attorney, Robert Offer, said her decision to split was "for the health of the family." Brad released a statement of his own not long after, telling People, "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids." While it's still unclear what led to their shocking breakup, keep reading to get all caught up on everything that has unfolded since then.

  1. Angelina files for divorce from Brad. The actress filed papers to end their marriage on Sept. 19, citing irreconcilable differences and requesting sole physical custody of their six children, Maddox, Pax, Shiloh, Zahara, and twins Vivienne and Knox. She also asked the judge to grant Brad visitation rights.
  2. Angelina's attorney, Robert Offer, releases a statement on her behalf. After their divorce news grabbed headlines on Sept. 20, Angelina's attorney said her decision to divorce was made "for the health of the family," but did not answer any further questions.
  3. Brad releases a statement. The actor spoke out about the split in a statement to People that same day, making it clear that he's putting their kids first. "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time," he said.
  4. More details about their divorce surface. In an exclusive report from Us Weekly, a source close to the pair revealed that "they fought a lot over the years and disagreed about many things. . . . The fighting got worse and they disagreed a lot about parenting." The insider also noted that they would also "fight over their schedules and politics."
  5. Angelina's manager, Geyer Kosinski, releases another statement on her behalf. Later that Tuesday, Angelina's manager told E! News, "Angelina will always do what's in the best interest of taking care of her family. She appreciates everyone's understanding of their need for privacy at this time."
  6. Celebrities react to Brad and Angelina's shocking split. Once the news broke on Sept. 20, it didn't take very long for GIFs and memes to flood the internet. Stars also quickly chimed in, and Chrissy Teigen tweeted, "Brad and Angelina. How am I supposed to go to work today?" Meanwhile, their friend George Clooney found out about the breakup while attending the Leaders' Summit on Refugees at the United Nations. During an interview with CNN, a reporter asked him to comment on their split, to which he shockingly responded, "What happened? . . . I didn't know that. I feel very sorry then. That's a sad story and unfortunate for a family. It's an unfortunate story about a family. I feel very sorry to hear that." Adele also dedicated her NYC concert to the couple, telling the audience, "I need to address to elephant in the room . . . But it's the end of an era." More recently, Courteney Cox said the divorce is "not about" Jennifer Aniston, and Jen's husband, Justin Theroux, made a similar comment about her inclusion being "nonsense." Melissa Etheridge also chimed in, calling Angelina "nasty" and saying that the allegations of child abuse against Brad were "completely unfounded."
  7. The New York Post releases a cover featuring a laughing Jennifer Aniston. On Sept. 21, people were furious when The New York Post released its Brad and Angelina split cover, showing a massive photo of Jennifer laughing hysterically. Not long after, Jennifer's pal, Chelsea Handler, spoke out about the breakup, saying, "Brad and Angelina always said they wouldn't get married until everyone could get married and I always said I wouldn't get married until they got divorced, so I'm officially accepting proposals. I'm ready." She then continued, "There are rumors that part of the problem was that Brad was allegedly drinking and smoking too much weed. I wonder why he would need to self-medicate? Maybe because he could have been spending the last 12 years at Lake Como hanging out with George Clooney and Matt Damon instead of being stuck in a house with 85 kids, speaking 15 different languages. Oh yeah, and because he married a f*cking lunatic, that's why."
  8. Marion Cotillard breaks her silence on Brad and Angelina's split. On Sept. 21, Marion took to Instagram to announce her pregnancy with longtime partner Guillaume Canet and shut down rumors that she had an affair with Brad in a lengthy post. "This is going to be my first and only reaction to the whirlwind news that broke 24 hours ago and that I was swept up into," she wrote, adding, "Firstly, many years ago, I met the man of my life, father of our son and of the baby we are expecting. He is my love, my best friend, the only one that I need . . . And to all the media and the haters who are quick to pass judgment, I sincerely wish you a swift recovery. Finally, I do very much wish that Angelina and Brad, both of whom I deeply respect, will find peace in this very tumultuous moment."
  9. Brad is investigated for child abuse. On Sept. 22, People magazine reported that the actor was under investigation for child abuse by the Los Angeles Police Department and LA County Department of Children and Family Services after someone anonymously reported that he got "verbally abusive" and "physical" with one of his six children. The incident allegedly occurred on Sept. 14 on his and Angelina's private plane, where the rest of the kids, as well as Angelina, were also present. The report also suggests that he had been drinking at the time of the incident. Not long after the news broke, the LAPD denied the report with the statement: "We have no criminal investigation that we are actively pursuing. To my knowledge, [Pitt talking to police] never happened. And right now, that is where our office is. We are not investigating any case, nor do we have any allegations against Mr. Pitt. We understand how rumors get spun up and hopefully we can put a few of them to rest. We have no investigation involving Mr. Pitt." People later clarified that the DCFS is still investigating Brad for child abuse, but the LAPD has not been involved. TMZ has also further reported that the child abuse allegations have been transferred to the FBI.
  10. Brad gets a lawyer. On Sept. 22, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the actor enlisted help from Lance Spiegel, a family law attorney from Beverly Hills, for his upcoming divorce.
  11. The FBI releases an official statement. On Sept. 22, the FBI responded to Brad's child abuse investigation in a statement to Us Weekly saying, "In response to your inquiry regarding allegations within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States; specifically, an aircraft carrying Mr. Brad Pitt and his children, the FBI is continuing to gather facts and will evaluate whether an investigation at the federal level will be pursued."
  12. Brad Pitt backs out of an event and releases another statement. On Sept. 27, Brad revealed he wouldn't be attending a previously planned screening of Terrence Malick's Voyage of Time. "I'm currently focused on my family situation and don't want to distract attention away from this extraordinary film," he said.
  13. Brad offers to take a drug test. In an effort to prove he has nothing to hide, Brad agreed to a drug test, according to a report from Us Weekly on Sept. 28. A legal source confirmed that the test would not not be conducted against Brad's will, stating, "The DCFS [Department of Community & Family Services] wouldn't compel someone to provide the urine sample for the drug test; it would be voluntary."
  14. Angelina hires the real-life Olivia Pope for her divorce. On Sept. 29, People confirmed that the actress hired famous crisis manager Judy Smith, who inspired Kerry Washington's character in Scandal, to help with her divorce. "Judy has been asked to consult with those working with Angelina on divorce negotiations," a source told the magazine. "Judy and her firm have a long history of handling issues that have unfortunately garnered too much attention in the public eye, and she knows how to push towards resolutions that are swift and discreet."
  15. Brad and Angelina reach a temporary custody agreement. On Sept. 30, it was revealed that the former couple reached a temporary custody agreement, which will be in effect for three weeks before the LA County Department of Children and Family Services will draw up another arrangement or turn the jurisdiction over to the court. The agreement states that Angelina will get full physical custody of their children and Brad will have visitation rights, although hist first visit will be monitored by a therapist, who will determine if he is allowed to then have unsupervised time with the kids. Angelina and Brad also have to attend individual counseling as well as family counseling with the kids, and Brad has to take random drug and alcohol tests.
  16. Brad won't be prosecuted for alleged plane incident with Angelina and Maddox. On Oct. 8, it was reported that the FBI never opened an investigation against Brad because there was "no case," though TMZ says the FBI is still working on gathering all the facts from the incident.
  17. Brad sees his kids for the first time since announcing the split. E! News confirmed that Brad was able to visit some of his children on Oct. 8, with a therapist present to monitor his behavior. It's not clear which of the kids were present and which weren't, but a second source also told E! that the therapist would be present for all of Brad's visits through Oct. 20 and that the actor happily volunteered to complete drug and alcohol testing (even though it was not required).
  18. Maddox Jolie-Pitt refuses to attend the reunion with his dad. While Brad reportedly "wanted to make sure the meeting would be the most productive for the kids," Maddox refused to attend the family reunion and stay with Angelina. According to a source close to Angelina, "He chose not to go and stayed with Angie," adding, "It wasn't full of joy and happiness."
  19. Angelina and the children are reportedly interviewed by the FBI. In an attempt to get to the bottom of the alleged physical altercation that happened between Brad and Maddox on the plane, the FBI reportedly visited Angelina and the kids at their Malibu, CA, home on Oct. 19, according to TMZ. Law enforcement, who is taking the allegations of child abuse seriously, spent three hours interviewing everyone about the incident. Brad was not present for the interview.
  20. Brad and Maddox reunite. After a month-long standoff, E! News reports that the two met on Oct. 20 with a therapist present.
  21. Brad and Angelina are selling Chateau Miraval. According to Us Weekly, Brad and Angelina have put their estate and vineyard in the village of Correns, France up for sale. "The home has been valued and is going on the market any day now," an insider revealed, adding, "It currently says Jolie-Pitt on the Chateau Miraval bottles, and the next season's batch will have a new reprinted label with no names written on it."
  22. Angelina meets with the FBI. Angelina reportedly met with two FBI agents in her rented home for four hours on Oct. 18, answering questions about the claims made against Brad.
  23. The investigation into Brad is extended. On Oct. 25, Us Weekly reported that the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services has extended their investigation into Brad Pitt. The investigators are looking into "whether there are additional incidents or a pattern that may suggest a history of abuse that involves more than one of Pitt and Angelina Jolie's six children." The investigation was initially scheduled to conclude on Oct. 20.
  24. Brad seeks joint custody. NBC News confirmed on Nov. 4 that the actor has filed for joint physical custody of the children. Angelina initially asked for sole custody when they first split, just allowing Brad visitation rights. Although that might have only been a part of the temporary custody agreement that was originally agreed to by a judge, the allegations made against Brad regarding child abuse certainly complicate things.
  25. Brad and Angelina reach another temporary custody agreement. On Nov. 7, Angelina's rep told ET in a statement that "childcare professionals have encouraged a legal agreement accepted and signed by both sides over a week ago." The agreement states that "the six children will stay in their mother's custody, and the children will continue therapeutic visits with their father . . . This has been determined by childcare professionals to be in the children's best interest." Her rep continued, "We are not in a position to discuss the details. We hope, now that it is clear that the events which led to the dissolution filing involved minor children and their wellbeing, there will be understanding of the sensitivity of the family situation. We believe that all sides are committed to healing the family and ask for your consideration during this difficult time."
  26. Brad has been cleared in child abuse investigation. On Nov. 9, law enforcement sources confirmed to Us Weekly that Brad did not abuse his son Maddox during a plane incident back in September. TMZ also reported that the Department of Children and Family Services ruled out any reports of any patterns of misconduct on the actor's part. Later that day, Angelina's rep released a statement to TMZ, saying, "Angelina said from the beginning that she felt she had to take action for the health of the family and is relieved that after their eight-week involvement, the DCFS is now satisfied the safeguards are put in place that will allow the children to heal."
  27. The FBI closes Brad's child abuse investigation. On Nov. 22, the Allied actor was officially cleared by the FBI of any wrongdoing involving his kids, NBC News reported. FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller released a statement, saying, "The FBI has conducted a review of the circumstances and will not pursue further investigation. No charges have been filed in this matter."
  28. Brad's lawyers file a motion asking a judge to seal the childrens' records as it relates to the divorce. On Dec. 22, news of the files were released, alleging that Angelina's attorneys compromised their privacy in a bid to "undercut" Brad during the custody battle. They added that Angelina releasing "the names of [the children's] therapists and other mental health professionals" violated their initial agreement to protect the children's privacy. "[She] appears to be determined to ignore even agreed upon standards relating to the children's best interest," the filing reads.
  29. Brad spends Christmas with his kids. According to Us Weekly, Brad saw his children over the holiday weekend for a gift exchange that Angelina organized. An insider told the publication that "[Brad] gave them presents and it was cordial."
  30. Angelina's lawyer slams Brad. According to TMZ, Angelina agreed to seal court documents related to their six children. The site also reports that the actress's lawyer filed legal documents that claim Brad only wants to keep the details private because he's "terrified that the public will learn the truth." "[Brad is trying to] deflect from [his] own role in the media storm which has engulfed the parties' children," the document reads. "There is little doubt that [Brad] would prefer to keep the entire case private, particularly given the detailed investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Dept. of Children and Family Services into allegation of abuse."
  31. Brad and Angelina release a joint statement. After agreeing to seal their divorce and custody documents, the actors' reps told Us Weekly, "The parties and their counsel have signed agreements to preserve the privacy rights of their children and family by keeping all court documents confidential and engaging a private judge to make any necessary legal decisions and to facilitate the expeditious resolution of any remaining issues. The parents are committed to act as a united front to effectuate recovery and reunification."

Stephen Colbert Blasts Donald Trump For Calling Meryl Streep "Over-Rated"

Stephen Colbert has had it with Donald Trump. On Monday, the late-night host used his monologue to respond to the president-elect's recent comments about nine-time Golden Globe winner Meryl Streep. Following Meryl's passionate speech at the ceremony, Trump went on a Twitter rant and called her "one of the most over-rated actresses." This, of course, did not sit well with Stephen, who blasted Trump on his show, saying, "Wait a second, I'm sorry, what? Meryl Streep, overrated? Have you seen Sophie's Choice? Have you seen The French Lieutenant's Woman?" Stephen then shouted, "No! Too far!" Watch the entire thing go down above.

The stunning and talented @janellemonae is killing me with this look. So so so beautiful ❤ #goldenglobes." George Clooney Slams Donald Trump Over Meryl Streep Tweets: "Aren’t You Supposed to Be Running the Country?”

George Clooney may have skipped the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, but that doesn't mean he wasn't watching. While attending a reception hosted by The Clooney Foundation for Justice on Monday, the actor weighed in on Donald Trump's recent comments about his Fantastic Mr. Fox costar, Meryl Streep's, acceptance speech in which Donald called her "one of the most over-rated actresses." "I've always said that about Meryl. She's maybe the most overrated actress of all-time. She and I worked together on Fantastic Mr. Fox as husband and wife and I will tell you even as a fox, a female fox, she's overrated," George said sarcastically before asking Donald, "Aren't you supposed to be running the country?"

Of course, George isn't the only star who's spoken out against the president-elect. Jesse Williams, John Legend, Lady Gaga, and Jennifer Lawrence have all openly worried about the fate of our nation.

The Number 1 Mistake People Make When Strength Training, According to a Trainer

You started lifting weights to get stronger, increase your metabolism, and slim down. You focus on form and using the right amount of weight to prevent hurting yourself, but there's one thing you might be doing that could be really harmful.

Take a look at your feet. What are you wearing? If you're wearing running sneakers to lift, the extra cushion and heel support are great for absorbing shock when pounding your feet, but they're terrible for your alignment and actually make lifting harder. According to Danielle Horan, a CrossFit coach and CrossFit Games competitor, the extra cushioning makes it harder to balance and also puts your feet on an angled surface, causing you to lean forward. Whether you're using a barbell, dumbbells, or a kettlebell, this isn't great for exercises like power cleans, squats, lunges, and deadlifts.

Just like you shouldn't wear cross-training shoes to run, you shouldn't wear running shoes to lift. So get yourself a pair of flatter shoes like Nike Metcons or Reebok CrossFit Nanos. They'll feel a little weird at first, but once you get used to them, they'll help prevent injury and allow your legs full range of motion to be more explosive and efficient.
