Jane the Virgin: Everything You Need to Know About That Shocking Death
MAJOR SPOILERS for Monday night's episode of Jane the Virgin below!
Well, it finally happened. After months and months of not-so-subtle hints that they would, Jane the Virgin killed off Michael Cordero. Despite pretty obvious foreshadowing from the narrator in plenty of previous episodes, his death still ended up being one of the most heartbreaking moments in the series thus far.
Season three's tenth episode, Chapter Fifty-Four, starts out on a hopeful note. Jane (Gina Rodriguez) and Michael (Brett Dier) are both on the cusp of major success in their respective careers, with Jane scoring an interview at a flashy book publisher and Michael taking an important law school exam. While hanging out with her mom, Jane realizes that her period is late. At first she goes into a trademark Jane stress spiral, freaking out that a potential pregnancy doesn't fit in with her and Michael's five-year plan. When she tells him the big news, however, he lights up with happiness at the thought of expanding their little family. Though a pregnancy test later reveals Mateo won't be getting a little brother or sister anytime soon, Jane and Michael's marriage appears stronger than ever. They return to a carnival where they had their first real date (full of ridiculously adorable flashbacks, I should note), and reflect on how far they've come.
Then, because this is a telenovela and telenovelas need more than just evil twins to keep things interesting, the episode nose dives into total tear-jerker territory. As he finishes up his test, Michael - who'd been complaining about feeling weird earlier in the day, but brushed it off as nerves - suddenly grasps his chest and falls to the floor dead, as photos of him and Jane at the carnival lay beside him. That's when the narrator steps in to reminds everyone that, "Friends, I did say Michael would love Jane until his dying breath." The episode then cuts to Jane on the phone with a doctor, who explains that Michael died from an aortic dissection as a result from the gunshot wound he sustained in the season two finale. She falls to the ground, sobbing, while Rafael rushes to console her, before the timeline flashes forward three years. Jane, not wearing a wedding ring, is seen getting ready for a wedding and sporting much shorter hair, as 4-year-old Mateo comes trotting into her room. Whose wedding is it? Where's Rafael?! WHAT DID #TEAMMICHAEL FANS DO TO DESERVE THIS?
Luckily showrunner Jennie Urman posted an emotional explanation about why Michael had to die on Tumblr:
"Originally, I thought Michael would die earlier. But Brett [Dier] is such an incredible actor – he gave us such great comedy and drama and first-rate exposition delivery (!), often all in one scene . . . So, we changed some things in the writers' room. Jane and Michael got married. They had sex. They moved into their first home. And I'm so glad we did that and I'm so glad all those firsts for Jane were with Michael. But this is a telenovela, as we so frequently remind you. And we are only at our midpoint."
Jane the Virgin has never been afraid of shocking fans with exciting and melodramatic plot twists that the telenovela style is known for (surprise murders, evil twins, and love triangles), so it was pretty clear from the get-go that Jane and Michael weren't going to get the simple happy ending that some might have wanted for them. At the very least it sets up a very interesting rest of the season, right? Rest in peace, Michael.

The Growing List of Grammy Awards Performers Is Only Getting More Impressive
The Grammy Awards are mere days away, which means it's only a matter of time before we find ourselves invigorated by some of the world's best music artists. While we've already seen all the nominations and pondered who will win album of the year, there's one other aspect of the show that hasn't completely been unveiled: the list of performers! Luckily for us, news about the 2017 acts is trickling in, so we're rounding up and presenting all the confirmed artists. If you thought Adele's presence was impressive, just wait until you see who else is slated to sing.
- Adele: As we mentioned above, Adele is officially confirmed to belt out a song on stage. The real question is, what song will she sing?!
- Beyoncé: In early February Entertainment Tonight confirmed that Beyoncé will perform at the Grammys, fresh off her second surprise pregnancy announcement. Suffice it to say, we're unable to contain ourselves.
- Katy Perry: The Recording Academy officially announced on Twitter in February that Katy will also be taking the stage for a performance.
- The Weeknd and Daft Punk: The pair will join forces to sing The Weeknd's new song, "I Feel It Coming." Daft Punk is also featured on the same song on The Weeknd's new album, Starboy.
- Alicia Keys and Maren Morris: In addition to announcing The Weeknd and Daft Punk, this collaboration was also added to the lineup.
- Anderson .Paak, A Tribe Called Quest, and Dave Grohl: The singer-rapper-musician, hip hop veterans, and rock legend will all take the stage together.
- Bruno Mars: In January, the Grammys made an official announcement that Mars is expected to appear.
- John Legend: As if his turn in La La Land wasn't enough of a treat for this award season, Legend is set to croon on the Grammys stage.
- Chance the Rapper: Chance the Rapper was added to the growing list at the beginning of February.
- Little Big Town: The country band, who recently collaborated with Taylor Swift on "Better Man," will perform.
- Sturgill Simpson: Simpson was announced with the new crop of performers at the beginning of February.
- William Bell and Gary Clark Jr.: The soul singer and blues musician will pair up for a special performance during the night.
- Metallica: Yep. Metallica.
- Carrie Underwood: Because what would the Grammys be without a little Underwood-brand country twang?
- Keith Urban: We're almost just as excited to see Nicole Kidman singing along in the audience. Almost.
Burning Question: Why Does Pineapple Irritate Your Mouth?
Yesterday I cut myself some fresh pineapple, then promptly proceeded to eat a lot of it before remembering that every time I eat a copious amount of pineapple, the roof of my mouth becomes itchy and sore. So why is this condition a common complaint among fresh pineapple aficionados?
Pineapples contain an plant protease enzyme called bromelain. Because it readily breaks down protein, bromelain is frequently used as a natural meat tenderizer. In addition, bromelain may also induce a prickly sensation in the mouth when consumed.
Although the enzyme is present in all parts of the pineapple plant, it's most concentrated in the stem, the hard piece in the middle of the fruit, which is much more fibrous and chewy but still edible. Many people believe that letting a pineapple sit overnight helps take away the irritation factor, but one surefire way to alleviate the burn is to cut out the core.

The 1 Thing You Should Never Put on a Sandwich, According to the Sandwich King Himself
Food Network chef and sandwich king Jeff Mauro spilled his sandwich dos and don'ts. Keep reading to learn his best advice.
POPSUGAR: What's the ultimate breakfast sandwich?
Jeff Mauro: Perfectly griddled sausage patty, everything bagel, veggie cream cheese, and pickled jalapeños, of course.
PS: What's the worst thing anyone could put on a sandwich?
JM: Mealy tomatoes.
PS: What's the best sandwich bread ever?
JM: The answer is NONE. Each sandwich has at least one appropriate bread to act as the vehicle.
PS: Does your son eat what you cook? How do you get him to eat vegetables?
JM: Kind of. He always eats the protein we make, and starch (usually sweet potatoes) and veggies. He's still not eating salads or asparagus, but we've always fed him well-seasoned and well-balanced food. I guess the trick is, and mind you, I only have one kid, to really not give [kids] a choice. They have to at least taste everything you make.
PS: What's your ultimate Father's Day meal?
JM: My ideal Father's Day meal is a big grilled beef tenderloin. Pair that with tons of mushrooms, something cheesy, and lots of Mark West wine.
PS: What's the most fun thing about being a chef who is a dad?
JM: Taking pride in the fact that my boy knows and respects good food and where it comes from and what it takes to make it. Now with my restaurant Pork & Mindy's in Chicago, he can come hang out with me on the weekends and see food from that end of the business. Plus, I'm proud that my boy can crack an egg like a champ.

That Insane Twist in Split Might Mean Way More Than You Think It Does
Back in January, M. Night Shyamalan unleashed his latest thriller unto the world. Called Split, the film focuses on a troubled man named Kevin who has 23 different personalities living inside him. And that's not even the craziest part! By the end of the film, not only do we get to meet Kevin's 24th personality - an identity called The Beast that demonstrates superhuman abilities - but we also find out that Split takes place in the same universe as Unbreakable, Shyamalan's superhero surprise from 2000. But wait, that's not all! It turns out the two movies might share more than just the world at large. A closer look at the 2017 film proves Kevin could be directly linked to David Dunn, the protagonist of Unbreakable. Let's break it down.
This theory has been raised in a few places on the internet, but it's perhaps best boiled down by Reddit user pvijay187. You might remember the beginning of Unbreakable: David is the sole survivor of a devastating train crash. At the climax of Split, Kevin goes to a train station and purchases flowers. He goes down to the platform and waits for the train to arrive. Once it's empty, he lays the flowers down in front of an entrance, goes inside, and mutates into The Beast . . . or, as the media refers to him at the end of the film, The Hoard.
Since flowers are often so symbolic of death, and since Kevin's dad is completely absent in all of his flashbacks, it's safe to assume he died. Given the fact that Kevin lays them down on the train platform, it's also safe to assume his father died in a train crash. You see where we're going with this, right? What if Kevin's dad dies in the same train crash David survives? If this holds up, it could explain why Kevin's mother was so vicious; she experienced a psychotic break after the loss of her husband. What's more, if we're to assume 17 years have passed in the universe (since the films came out in 2000 and 2017), the timeline might work in our favor. After all, it's clear Kevin developed his personalities somewhere in his preadolescence. If the theory is true, it's possible Kevin blames David, in some weird way, for his father's death. In turn, it may mean that M. Night Shyamalan's Split sequel could involve some sort of showdown between both superpowered individuals.
Is your mind blown yet?!

This Harry Potter Theory About Dumbledore's Deluminator Will Break Your Damn Heart
We first encounter Dumbledore's mysterious "Put-Outer" early on in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, when he knocks out an entire street's lights with just a few clicks.
"It seemed to be a silver cigarette lighter. He flicked it open, held it up in the air, and clicked it. The nearest street lamp went out with a little pop. He clicked it again - the next lamp flickered into darkness. Twelve times he clicked the Put-Outer, until the only lights left on the whole street were two tiny pinpricks in the distance, which were the eyes of the cat watching him."
At the time, it seemed that the device was a nifty bit of magic just for turning lights off and on with flair - useful, but not so remarkable. We, of course, learn that the Put-Outer, or Deluminator, is much more. It was Dumbledore's will that the device be passed to Ron Weasley after his death, and Ron later discovers it's more powerful than any of them realized.
In The Deathly Hallows, the journey to find the Horcruxes becomes too much for Ron, and he abruptly leaves Harry and Hermione to continue the quest without him. His departure was due in part to the effect Slytherin's locket Horcux had on him, and he immediately regrets his decision to abandon his friends. Unfortunately, he is unable to find them again, until the Deluminator works its true magic, to lead him back to where his heart is, to be reunited with his friends.
A Redditor recently shared a moving theory about the nature of the Deluminator, which if true would illuminate Dumbledore's brilliance even more and further underscore the late headmaster's believe in the power of love. Read the theory ahead.
Based on the theory, Dumbledore designed the Deluminator using a branch of magic he knew Tom Riddle, later Voldemort, had an aversion to, making it less likely that Riddle would think to combat what he didn't believe was even worth considering. It also means that Ron's love for Harry and Hermione led him back to where he was needed despite how difficult their task was, because as the theory reminds us, "we need love the most when we are lost in the dark."

How Supreme Leader Snoke Could Be the "Last Jedi" in Star Wars
Now that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is officially in a galaxy not so far away, we're revving up our engines and trying to figure out what will happen next. In January, the official title reveal for the film sent us into overdrive. Upon initial inspection, eagle-eyed fans have noted that the titles form a sentence. Then, of course, there's the larger and simpler looming question: who, exactly, is this last Jedi? Even though we've mostly been looking at the good guys as candidates, one internet theorist has turned to the dark side.
Enter Reddit user AnakinKardashian (lol). According to the theory, Supreme Leader Snoke is the last Jedi. The post asserts that recent installments of the franchise have been drawing our attention to Jedi history. In Rogue One, we see the planet Jedha, which is where the nature of the Force was first explored and where the Jedi religion was essentially started. In The Force Awakens (this includes the movie and its novelization), we learn that Luke is in search of the original Jedi temple; Snoke is very, very ancient; and Kylo's lightsaber is of a very ancient design that came directly from Snoke himself.
AnakinKardashian posits that we could be venturing into Jedi history because the ancient order of the Jedi is much, much different from the Jedi as we know them in the present. "What if what we know as Jedi are not really Jedi after all?" the post asks. "What if Snoke is the last Jedi, in its original form?" If Snoke really is that last living member of the original Jedi order, it connects this new obsession with Jedi history, Snoke's age, Kylo Ren's ancient lightsaber design, and Luke's quest for the first Jedi temple. What's more, if the theory that Snoke appears in Rogue One holds up, it strengthens the argument even more. In the Star Wars universe, anything is possible, right?

Is There a TV Costar Curse? 33 Couples That Couldn't Make It Work
Remember how bummed we were when The Vampire Diaries' Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder broke up? Luckily they've been able to remain friends, but they certainly aren't the first TV costars to strike up (and then end) a romantic relationship - small-screen duos like Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody, Blake Lively and Penn Badgley, and Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron also hooked up during their downtime, and leading ladies like Jennifer Garner, Emily VanCamp, and Sophia Bush were lucky enough to find love on more than one set. Scroll through to see 33 couples that took their love off screen - and even worked together well past their demise.
What You Need to Know Before Letting Your Child Ride in the Front Seat
Amy S.'s 6-year-old daughter, who rides in the back of the family car in a booster seat, recently started asking if she can sit up in the front of the car with Mom. Jessica B.'s son is also begging to ride in the front seat, especially when he sees his peers get out from the front seat of the car when he's dropped off at school. Diane B.'s 11-year-old pretends not to hear her requests to return to the back seat.
It's normal for kids to express an interest in riding in the front seat of the car in the years leading up to teen-hood. But with parents in online communities referring to the front seat of a car as a "suicide seat," "death trap," or "child killer," as a reader named Charlie P. reports, it's no wonder the first response of many moms is a resolute "no."
So when does it become reasonably safe to allow your child to ride up front?
1. "Not Until the Teen Years"
General reader wisdom says children should not ride in the front of the car until they are about 12 or 13 years old. As Kelly B. explains, "What people don't understand is the reasoning behind why kids shouldn't sit in the front seats. They just are not big enough [before 12 or 13]."
She goes on to break down why riding in the front seat isn't as safe as riding in the back seat. During a collision, a child in the front seat can be thrown into the dashboard or through the windshield:
"Even if he's properly buckled in, he's at much greater risk for being harmed by objects intruding into the car in the front than in the back. What's more, in cars with passenger air bags (which includes most newer models), the car's frontal air bags deploy with such force that they can cause severe head and neck injuries to a child," she shares.
Jeannett S. and Talisha B. agree that it's best to wait until the teen years to allow your child to move up front. That's most likely the time when your child will reach the height and weight needed to minimize injury from an exploding air bag in a crash. "Just like a roller coaster ride at an amusement park requires you to be 'At Least This Tall to Ride the Ride,' so should a child be to sit in the front seat," says Jeannett. And Talisha adds firmly, "Once a child outgrows a booster seat, he or she should continue riding in the back seat with a seat belt until around age 13."
Brandi C., a mom who works in medicine, confirms these rationales with an eyewitness account. As a medical worker, she reports, the hardest thing she ever saw was the aftermath of an accident involving a 7-year-old "who wanted to ride up front with daddy to the store" and who had indeed been riding in the front seat: "They were rear-ended, and because of the child's size, he slipped under the seatbelt and under the dash, [and] died instantly. Since then, I have always carried that with me, and have chosen that my son and stepkids will not sit in the front seat until they are teenagers."
Some passenger safety organizations, such as SafetyBeltSafe U.S.A., take concerns like Brandi's one step further and suggest children continue to ride in the back seat until they are ready to drive themselves.
2. When State Laws Say It's OK
Some states have specific child-restraint laws and laws that spell out the rules regarding children riding in the front seat, offers a member named Talisha. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has information about choosing the right seat for your child in the car.
The laws can be very specific about what age, height, and weight a child must be to sit in a front seat. For example, in Colorado, where Brandi C. lives, children have to be 5 feet tall and 11 years old before they can ride in the front seat, she reports. Because each state is different, moms need to familiarize themselves with their own state's requirements. A mom named Jennifer suggests asking a local police officer the appropriate age, height, and weight for safe front-seat riding.
3. When No Other Seats Are Available
State laws are typically accommodating, letting a child who normally would not be allowed to sit up front to sit next to the driver if there are not enough safe rear seats in the vehicle, such as in a pickup truck, Sherri C. says. She notes that she had to let her oldest start sitting up front at age 9, when she ran out of seating in the back of her car. "With four car seats [already] in the back, he didn't have a spot to fit in," she explains.
Lynn V. notes that she would have had to let one of her three children ride in front when she owned a Plymouth Breeze. However, because she felt it was unsafe, she instead bought a Ford Expedition that had more rear seating available.
4. When Air Bags Are Turned Off
If you do place your child in the front seat, Kelly B. suggests checking to see whether your car's air bag has an on-off switch or taking your vehicle to the car dealership so that it can be disabled, and Brandy S. provides more details:
"Most two-seat cars and pickup trucks sold these days either have a switch that allows you to manually turn off the air bag, or they have 'smart' air bags that detect the weight of the body in the passenger seat and will automatically turn it off if the body does not weigh more than a certain amount. In certain scenarios, you may be able to take your vehicle to the dealership and have them deactivate the air bag if your vehicle does not offer other air bag-off options for placing a child in the passenger seat."
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration maintains a list of companies that install airbag on-off switches, Kelly adds, although she says parents need to get permission from that government organization before installing such a switch. And "if your passengers have all moved out of the car-seat phase, your biggest or tallest passenger should ride in the front seat, and [you should] move his seat as far back from the dashboard as possible," Kelly says.
Once the air bag is disabled, Charlie P. feels that the front seat is a "safe and practical place for a rear facing child" in a car seat, because, among other reasons, the front of the vehicle and dashboard are the strongest points in the car and research shows that parents are less distracted when their child is in the front vs. rear seat. "Safety conscious brands such as Volvo also state very clearly that front seat is just as safe as the rear seat for car seats," this member notes.
Safety First
Whatever your circumstances, the most important consideration, say many moms, is safety: if you're not comfortable with the idea of moving your child up front, don't cave in. A member named Kelly suggests buying some time by getting a high-back booster seat and installing it in the center of the back seat so that your child can more easily see and talk to you without having to sit next to you. As RenaFaye N. reminds, your most important consideration should be safety: "A child's safety is more important than what she thinks she wants."

10 Things to Stop Doing to Have a Healthier Year
Having a healthier, happier life starts with letting go of the things that are holding you back. Believe it or not, before you can add on happiness, you need to subtract a few things from your life. Some are more abstract than others, but all contribute to your overall well-being, physical and mental health, and feelings of joy. These are the things you need to NOT do in order to truly seize the day (and seize the healthiness).
This Hilarious "Roll Safe" Meme Will Make You Feel Better About Your Life
We're only two months into 2017 and the internet has already blessed us with several amazing memes. From the Hollywood sign change to Salt Bae, it's hard to imagine what could come next. That's where roll safe, the internet's new favorite meme comes in, here to offer you advice you didn't know you needed.
Reece Simpson, aka Roll Safe, aka RS, is a character played by actor Kayode Ewumi. The character is an aspiring rapper, and his dreams and life are "captured" in a mockumentary called Hood Documentary. The six-part series aired on BBC Three's YouTube channel. The first episode, called "Happy Belated," was uploaded on June 1, 2016 and includes the now-infamous meme. In it, the filmmaker is talking to RS and his upcoming date. The filmmaker asks, "Oh, so you're attracted to intelligence, RS?" He responds, "Yeah man, I think Rachel is beautiful because she's got good brains." He then points to his head and smiles. Watch the episode below.
This single episode has more than a million views and inspired the Roll Safe meme. Basically, the meme pairs RS pointing to his head and smiling, with some terrible piece of advice. See some of the best Roll Safe memes ahead.

Cue Freakout: Lorac Is Launching a Pirates of the Caribbean Collection
Even if you're not a fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean series (and if so, why?), you must admit that there's plenty of beauty inspiration. Beachy, salt-sprayed hair, glowing tans, and most importantly, Jack Sparrow's sultry, smudgy eyeliner. It seems that makeup brand Lorac agrees, because its social media team just announced a collaboration in honor of the upcoming movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
In a post to Instagram, the brand revealed that an official Pirates-themed launch will be coming soon. "We are thrilled to announce #LORAC will be heading to the high seas with @disneystudios. The trailer premiere has us feeling giddy already! So excited to see the collection at @ultabeauty and other fine retailers," the comment read. The image shows the packaging of a product in the collection, "Treasure in the Stars," which looks like a pirate chest-inspired eye shadow palette.
We've reached out to Lorac for more details, but if we had to guess, we'd say that this launch will hit shelves around Memorial Day Weekend, which is when the movie makes its debut. Here's hoping a few creamy eyeliner pencils make their way into the collection so we can re-create that "why's the rum gone" smoky eye. Read on to see the Instagram post in question, then stay tuned for more updates on this collection as they become available.
