Even Diamond Experts Are Excited by the Size of Kirsten Dunst's Engagement Ring

Kirsten Dunst proudly showed off her engagement ring from Fargo costar Jesse Plemons, sitting front row at Couture Week, no less. It's no wonder she's excited, given the jewel's unique traits. The oval-shaped diamond is mounted in flashing yellow gold, and it's played up by complementing stones on each side of the band. Some editors and diamond experts estimate the piece to be a full three carats, ringing in around $80,000.

There's really no better place to compare notes on your most prized jewel than at Paris Haute Couture Week, and Kirsten did just that, as she and Arizona Muse caught up at the Ralph & Russo show. Read on to see Kirsten's ring shine against her romantic ivory dress, shop similar designs if you're so inclined, and check out how Kirsten recycled her old Oscars dress just a few nights back. It seems like right now, Kirsten's having quite the memorable style moment.

20 Burritos You'll Devour as Soon as They're Ready

There's something so satisfying about munching on a burrito. It could be the fact that it's a better version of a delicious sandwich that basically involves no mess - how wonderful is it that any and all overflow goes into the tinfoil surrounding the tortilla? - or maybe it's that its well-seasoned insides are usually cheesy and so incredibly filling. Either way, it doesn't matter. Whatever it is, it keeps us coming back for more.

And because we can't get enough of burritos (California, Tex-Mex, traditional - we love them all), we've rounded up 20 recipes that'll keep our addiction going strong. Keep scrolling to find those irresistible options.

7 Ways to Change How You Talk So Your Toddler Will Listen

Having trouble getting your toddler to follow instructions? Take a different approach and work on your communication, with help from our friends at Fatherly.

Toddlers are terrible listeners. This is a fact. Part of it is because they aren't developmentally ready to internalize things you're telling them. That makes it necessary to repeat yourself a bajillion times. Which is also why you don't see a lot of toddlers who are talk-therapists. And why you never feel better when you're telling them about your anxiety over all those TPS reports at work.

That said, there are ways to get your toddler to focus a bit more on the words that are coming out of your face. Here are 7 ways to change the way you talk so your toddler will actually listen.

Get Active

Help your toddler understand that you are, in fact, a real and serious person by getting up close and personal. This means that you need to stop bellowing from another room. Because, frankly, if your request wasn't important enough to get you to move your butt, they're not going to give a crap.

It's also important to get down to their level. Because the closer you get, the more they have to pay attention. It also shows what you're asking is important enough to make an effort. Kinda the way an email from your boss is different than when they're sitting beside your desk making you really nervous.

Get Quiet

The problem with yelling at your kid is that it's the worst crash course on human communication. It also becomes very normalized very quickly. That means that no matter how loud you yell, they will continue to not listen. This is a literal nightmare. Except in the nightmare you're screaming for help but people just keep letting Bubble Guppies tear you up like piranhas.

The better way? Get super quiet. If you are close, and talking quietly, suddenly your request seems a bit more serious. This also works if they are in the process of a meltdown. Stay calm and keep quietly interjecting. Eventually, they'll match you.

Keep It Positively Simple

Your toddler is just starting to figure out directions. So the more you talk, the less they'll understand. More than that, they're just starting to grasp negative concepts like no and don't. You, on the other hand, can grasp high-level negative concepts. Like the poop emoji, or "tweetstorms."

Keep your requests as simple and positive as possible. Instead of "you know you aren't supposed to run in the kitchen," go for, "Walk, please."

Give Options

Many activities are mandatory. Getting dressed to go outside, for instance, is not optional. You know because you tried it once and it didn't end well.

That said, some of these mandatory activities can still be packed with choices: "Do you want the red or the green shirt? Do you want to put on your socks first or your pants?" These options will give your kid a sense of empowerment and collaboration.

Offer Information

Even for a toddler, commands are a pain in the ass. That's particularly true when the command appears to be given for no damn good reason. Who the hell is Simon and who cares what he says?

On the other hand, if you give them information, you're showing them trust that they can work things out. So instead of going on about the toys in the driveway, tell them you notice there are toys in the driveway. And then work together to figure out what happens when toys are in the driveway, particularly when you're pulling in from work, feeling like a zombie.

Own Your Expectations And Follow Up

If you tell your kid they need to brush their teeth, you've given them an opening. Because the fact is, in their mind, they don't need to do anything. So you'll get the toddler version of an epic clapback: "No I don't!" Daaaaaaaaaaamn!

But if you say that you need them to do something ("I need you to brush your teeth") there is no ambiguity. You have the agency. But be careful if you get tempted to add an "or else" onto your "I need." Be prepared to act out whatever that "or else" is, otherwise you'll look weak. And weakness only makes a toddler stronger.

Be A Good Listener

A good way to get your kid to listen is to model good listening. That means when they're laying it all out there, you are looking at them and attentive. You aren't trying to tell them their thoughts or ideas are invalid and you're helping them name their emotions.

Soon enough, with some incredible modeling, they might even be able to listen to you talk about your day. Who knows? You might even get them nodding along as you drone on and on about all the TPS report cover sheets.

The 6 Biggest Mistakes You're Making in Pilates Classes

Are you a Pilates addict? Make sure you're not making these mistakes in class - they're more common than you'd think! We got the scoop from Brianna Hamilton at Evolve Integrated Wellness and Pilates, who notices clients (from newbies to regulars) doing these six things. Fortunately, there are easy solutions to each mistake.

1. Wearing Jewelry and Accessories

Believe it or not, it's not uncommon to see both clients and instructors alike wearing dangly jewelry. "They like to look cute and trendy, so they'll throw on a long necklace, hoop earrings, or a scarf, but all of these can cause some serious issues," said Hamilton. This can actually be very dangerous! "For clients, all of the above can catch onto the equipment!" she said. "No one wants to break their new long necklace or get caught to the equipment and injure themselves."

If you're a Pilates instructor, while you want to look nice for your class, consider those moments when you're "bending down to change the client's springs or helping adjust [the client's] position," because "your jewelry or accessories can also get caught to the equipment or tickle your clients." Awkward!

Solution: Go jewelry-free.

2. Not Dressing Appropriately

While baggy clothes might be comfy when you're sweating, they can actually work against you in Pilates. "Your instructor needs to be able to see your position and posture in order to ensure that you are preforming all of the positions correctly," said Hamilton. Your baggy clothes also have more of a chance of getting caught on the reformer. That said, "you also do not want booty shorts and crop tops since there is a lot of movement during your Pilates class," she said.

Solution: Wear a formfitting tank with cropped or long leggings.

3. Not Wearing Grip Socks

Not all studios require grip socks, but Hamilton urges you to wear them anyway. "Always wear toe socks!" she said. "I see a lot of clients without toe socks, but everyone should be wearing them; they help you stay in control if you lose your grip, plus they complete your outfit!" If you've ever had an instance of sweaty feet on a slick reformer, you know how true this is!

Solution: Always pack a pair of grippy socks.

4. Wearing Perfume (or Scented Body Lotion)

"While everyone likes to smell good, less is more when you sweat," said Hamilton. "When you work out and sweat, your scent spreads throughout the entire room - and not everyone enjoys the new Chloe perfume . . ."

Solution: Wear deodorant, and skip the body spray.

5. Eating a Huge Meal Beforehand

Considering Chipotle before hitting the reformer? Maybe don't. "Think about what you're eating before a Pilates class! Carb loading is not recommended," she said. "No one feels great going into an inversion position if they just ate a burrito."

Solution: Eat a light meal and finish eating 30 to 60 minutes before class.

6. Gripping the Handles and Straps Too Hard

When your muscles are on fire and you feel like you can't possibly get one more rep in, you might find yourself "death-gripping your hand straps," as Hamilton puts it. "This will give you carpal tunnel," she said. "A light grip is all you need." So don't cling for dear life, and focus that energy on your muscles, not your hands.

Solution: Relax, take a deep breath, and be mindful of your grip.

Why Queen Elizabeth II Once Cried Over a Ship

Image Source: Getty / Tim Graham

It was said that when Queen Elizabeth II's royal yacht, the Britannia, was decommissioned in 1997, she cried. It was a remarkable and rare show of emotion from the legendarily stoic queen, giving the public a brief glimpse into her private family life with husband Prince Philip. The public tear was also a testament to her love for what became known as the royals' country home at sea.

When Elizabeth and Philip married in 1947, they didn't move into a new family home. In fact, they've never had the opportunity to build and furnish their very own space; over the past almost 70 years, they've moved from one inherited home - er, castle - to another. Yes, it's nearly impossible to feel sympathy for two royals with multiple estates. But the background of their housing situation proves why it was so meaningful when Elizabeth and Philip had the opportunity to create their first family home, in the form of a yacht, in the early 1950s.

Elizabeth and Philip oversaw the design and decoration of the Britannia when it was agreed that her parents' boat, the Victoria & Albert, was no longer seaworthy. Philip, who has always had a keen interest in design, took over what ended up being a lavish boat with a relatively frugal interior design scheme. Over the years, the royal yacht became scene to family trips with their kids, Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward, as well as a multitude of state functions. Charles and Diana took their honeymoon aboard the yacht, and in time, the queen's many grandchildren grew to appreciate their own holidays on Britannia. Prince Philip, a former naval man himself, is said to have overseen games, hijinks, and drink parties on the boat's formidable deck.

Since the Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned, the vessel has been moored in Edinburgh, Scotland, where it still sits today as a major tourist attraction in the seaside neighborhood of Leith. During a recent press tour of the United Kingdom with Visit Britain, POPSUGAR was able to visit the yacht and see the remarkably well-preserved boat. It provided a fascinating look into what life was really like for the queen and her family as they traveled the world in style, racking up a reported one million miles at sea.

There were Philip and Elizabeth's sparse bedrooms, with the single beds they once occupied. (Apparently, it has been the custom for couples of their status and age to always have separate rooms.) Displaying the royals' very relatable frugality, Elizabeth's bed linens were hand-me-downs. Practically every room has a small bar, where the royals either served themselves or had help to make their favorite drinks, like a gin and Dubonnet for her majesty. There's also the queen's office, or sitting room, where she tended to her work and made her way through her "red boxes," sent by the government and full of official correspondence and updates, daily. All the art is bolted onto the walls, for safety.

The largest and grandest room on the ship is the living room, which has an electronic fireplace - naval rules prohibited a real fire - and floral furniture that could be found in any grandparents' sitting room. Remarkably, nothing about Britannia's interiors seemed overly stuffy or grand.

It's easy - and great fun - to imagine how the royal family spent their time on Britannia. The queen and her family are known for loving to keep the press at an arm's length and to retreat as often as possible from the public eye. The royal yacht offered the queen, her husband, and their extended family a chance to literally get away from it all.

Sadly, the good times came to an end when funding for the yacht was cut by the 1990s Labour government, who were under financial pressure.

In 2011, a number of royals did, however, return to the boat. It was the venue for a prewedding party held the night before the queen's granddaughter Zara Phillips married rugby player Mike Tindall. Prince William and his wife of three months at the time, Kate Middleton, were photographed leaving the event, along with Princes Harry and Edward. One person who did not attend? That would be the queen. Neither she nor Prince Philip has ever been back to Britannia. And given all the good times they'd had on their ship, it's understandable why the queen had to wipe away that mythical tear.

Ralph Lauren's New Collection Is Entirely Neutral, But Full of Flavor

This Fashion Week, Ralph Lauren lined his Madison Avenue flagship store with white chairs, 10,000 orchids acting as the backdrop. Make no mistake, he was debuting his "February collection," shoppable now, as Ralph has officially joined the see now, buy now club.

While the Americana designer stuck to a theme, creating pieces for women with a "nomadic spirit," his neutral palette (an homage to the desert) felt right in line with a lot of the Fall runways, which embrace the same color scheme. Ralph invited his customers to the brand's Facebook page, where they could see the clothes in action, and then immediately purchase them online. Needless to say, there was a lot to be excited for. Because you see, even though the looks were without vibrant color, they were still flavorful.

Animal print accessories were the staples - like the shopper Kendall Jenner toted down the runway and her matching shoes - but sequined dresses and floral printed cape gowns were plenty glamorous. Even Bella Hadid's loose silk poncho was evening-chic when paired with open-toed sandals and the chunky gold jewelry. These artful earrings, pendants, and even the belts that provided a casual touch to silk silhouettes, were a reminder that American girls should always keep their free spirits in tact.

7 Ways Latinas Can Make Their Voices Heard

The unexpected outcome of the 2016 presidential election may have felt discouraging for many voters, including Latinas who rallied together against Donald Trump's many shocking comments about immigration and women. If you felt a wave of apathy in the aftermath of the election, you are not alone. Now that the proverbial dust has settled, however, it's especially important to stay engaged and involved. Ahead, we've listed seven ways to do that.

1. Participate in your local Latinas Represent chapter.

Latinas Represent is the byproduct of the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, Hispanas Organized for Political Equality, and Latino Community Foundation of Colorado. The coalition works toward increasing Latinx representation in American politics. While Latinas Represent does give female leaders the tools they need to run for office or influence public policy, it also offers regular civilians a place to share the issues that affect them. To engage with other Latinas in your area, check out Latinas Represent's many chapters. If you're not represented on the map, then consider starting your own!

2. Contact your elected officials.

In November of 2016, a former congressional staff member went viral with her helpful guide to contacting representatives and actually making them listen to you. All of her advice is definitely worth a read on Twitter - however, she ultimately said the most effective method is to actually just make the calls. For more information on how to contact them, click here.

3. Share your story with COLOR.

The Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights (COLOR) is a pro-choice, sex-positive movement that fights for reproductive rights and the overall physical and mental well-being of Latinas. If you're willing, you can share your own so-called "reproductive justice" story with COLOR. The organization will only use your first name.

4. Mark your calendar for Nov. 6, 2018.

Despite the unexpected outcome of the 2016 presidential election, Latinx voters still had a strong influence on many local and state-level races. For example, Mexican-American Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto won the Senate race in Nevada. While these victories from the 2016 election are great, the midterm elections on Nov. 6, 2018, will provide Latinx voters with another opportunity to make their voices heard.

5. Become a sponsor for ELLAS.

Embracing Latina Leadership Alliances, or ELLAS, is a program that helps low-income high school students excel both in and outside of the classroom. For $950, you can sponsor a student and help them attend workshops relevant to their interests and pursuit of higher education. You can also get involved by becoming a volunteer or speaking at a workshop. While ELLAS is not an explicitly political organization, investing in the next generation is certainly a way to influence politics in the years to come. They are the future, after all.

6. Attend a local town hall meeting.

Town hall meetings serve as effective (yet slightly less formal) spaces for residents in the area to air their grievances and propose solutions. While these types of meetings don't have a direct effect on the nation at large, they are still important and can improve your day-to-day life. To attend a meeting, find out who your senators and representatives are and monitor their websites or Twitter accounts for any announcements on upcoming meetings.

7. Run for political office.

If you've ever considered a career in politics, check out She Should Run. Following the presidential election, the organization launched an incubator program that has since encouraged over 4,000 women to run for elected office. She Should Run helps women define their brands, stand up to sexism, and connect with other women in the program so that they can grow their respective networks.

Here's Giada De Laurentiis' Famous, Savory Oatmeal Recipe

It's no secret that Giada De Laurentiis eats oatmeal with olive oil for breakfast. It's "one of my favorite things to eat for breakfast," she told POPSUGAR in an interview. Giada typically recommends drizzling oats with just olive oil and sea salt, but she shared a recipe on her new lifestyle site Giadzy that proves oatmeal with olive oil goes beyond the basics and that you can get creative with unexpected toppings. Giada's savory oatmeal is made with lemon, thyme, chopped almonds, extra-virgin olive oil, and oranges for just a touch of sweetness. Giada writes, "A twist on traditional sweet oats, this savory variation uses extra-virgin olive oil and oranges in lieu of oft- favored brown sugar. The olive oil is packed with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats to help stabilize blood sugar and control cravings throughout the day."

If you're looking for new ideas for breakfasts that fill you up, this low-sugar and high-protein oatmeal is the perfect option.

5 Secrets About Best Buy, According to an Employee

Curious about whether you should actually get the warranty at Best Buy? Find out the answer from one Best Buy employee's Reddit AMA. The employee, who works for Best Buy in Canada as a "connected solutions specialist," answered questions about the break room, bargaining, and whether or not to get a warranty on a tech device. See the employee's answers ahead.

People steal all sorts of devices

According to the employee, they can't do anything to stop people from stealing. So he's seen people "walk out with laptops."

The break room has video games.

Forget eating lunch during your break - relax by playing a game instead! The break room in this employee's store, also called a "Hub," has a Wii U in it.

The discount isn't that great.

Unlike other retail chains, Best Buy's discount on laptops and gaming systems isn't great - so don't ask for it. But, if you need cables or other accessories, the discount works in their favor.

The people at the return area don't ignore you on purpose.

If you happen to see a person at the return desk area, they aren't always equipped to help you. According to the employee, sometimes it's employees working with other stores to get a product shipped or checking stock of an item.

If you want a deal on a warranty, just ask.

On a basic level, the employee recommends always getting the warranty. The employee also mentioned that if you want a deal on a warranty, ask for one. "Sometimes we can do half off two-year or three-year [warranty]!" they wrote.

The 1 Reason Android Users Might Not Want to Date Someone With an iPhone

If you're wondering when your days of #foreveralone are going to go away, you might want to get rid of your Android phone or at least fix the cracked screen. These two reasons might be why you're single, at least according to a new study from Match.com and Research Now.

The study, called Singles in America, was conducted in 2016 and surveyed more than 5,000 single people. It also revealed that your single status might be because of your choices with tech.

Get Rid of Your Android Phone

Among iPhone users, it's pretty common to see a romance quickly die if someone in the relationship is using an Android phone. No iMessage? Please, some people would rather prioritize the blue message bubbles than ever see a green one. It's a fact that showed up in the study; iPhone owners are 21 times more likely to "negatively judge" someone with an Android. That doesn't mean Android owners are flexible angels either; they are 15 times more likely to also "negatively judge" a romantic interest who owns an iPhone.

Stop Complaining on Facebook

There are plenty more tech reasons as to why you're eating a jar of Nutella every night. Fifty-eight percent of people find it a turn-off if you're always complaining about your life on Facebook. That's right - it's time to take your whining off your status updates.

Don't Check Your Phone on a First Date

Oh and if you're on a first date, please don't answer your phone! Seventy-five of single people think it's a turn-off, which makes sense because if you really need to escape a date, just go to the bathroom and have your friend call you.

Fix Your Cracked Phone

Dudes, this last piece of advice is for you: fix your cracked screen. It's unprofessional, could cut your finger, and could be another reason you're still single. Eighty-six percent of women "negatively judge" a man for a cracked screen, because if you can put yourself together for a date, you can fix your phone.

We can't guarantee you'll find the love of your life as soon as these "problems" are fixed, but everyone's gotta start somewhere, right?

Your 24-Hour Detox Plan

Whether you overindulged last night or just need an extra push in the right direction, this one-day plan will help get you on your healthy way!

Morning

  1. Upon waking: The benefits of lemon juice are plenty, so start your day off on the right note by drinking some hot water with freshly squeezed lemon juice. Aside from giving the body a boost of vitamin C, says Dr. Frank Lipman, specialist of integrative medicine, hot water with lemon also helps to stimulate the digestive tract. Be sure to continue to drink water all throughout the day - hydration is key to a healthy detox!
  2. Before breakfast: When detoxing, an intense workout isn't recommended, but it's still important to keep the body warm and the blood flowing. If you're feeling a little sluggish, there's no better way to wake up the body than with some gentle, energizing yoga. This short three-minute morning yoga sequence from yogi Tara Stiles is designed to wake up the body, helping you get energized for the rest of the day.
  3. Break the fast: Set the day up for success by eating a meal that will keep you feeling satisfied without weighing you down. If you're a fan of PB&J, you'll love this strawberry smoothie recipe from celeb trainer Harley Pasternack. Since it contains over a day's worth of fiber, it will definitely help to keep things moving. Another option is this recipe for a flat-belly smoothie, which contains ingredients known to ease digestion and eliminate uncomfortable feelings of bloat. Both smoothies contain about 300 calories.
  4. Midmorning coffee break: While it's encouraged to give up caffeine during a detox, sometimes it's not always feasible. Instead of ordering a cup of coffee, opt for green tea. Rich in antioxidants, green tea has also been shown to boost metabolism. If you're feeling like you need a little snack before lunch, grab a fiber-rich apple, or pair some belly-fighting blueberries with probiotic-filled Greek yogurt - each snack will aid in digestion.

Afternoon

  1. Break often: Use this time to really care for your body's health, so as much as you can, try to move throughout the day. Get up from your desk frequently to take short walks around the office (every 20 minutes is a good benchmark). If you can't get up that often, take a moment to do these desk stretches throughout the day, and give your eyes a break by looking away from your computer using the 20-20-20 rule: look away from your computer screen every 20 minutes at a spot 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  2. Lunch hour: Avoid the afternoon slump by eating a light lunch that won't weigh you down. We recommend choosing one of these detox soup recipes or this fiber-rich cabbage salad that contains heart-healthy fats; round out the meal with some lean protein. Take this time to eat away from your desk - put away your phone and focus on the delicious meal in front of you. Once lunch is done, allow yourself 20 or 30 minutes for a walk.
  3. Snack time: If you feel like you need something to hold you over until dinner, there's nothing quite like a green juice. This nutrient-dense beverage has a knack for instantly boosting energy and making you feel like you have done something really good for your body. It also doesn't hurt that it's packed with a host of essential vitamins. If you aren't able to make your own juice, pick up one of these store-bought cold-pressed juices from your grocer.

Evening

  1. Unwind: Before heading home to plop yourself in front of the television, find a way to treat yourself! A great way to unwind and detox is to get a massage or spend time in a sauna. Both will help to ease any tension in the body and offer relief to sore muscles or joints.
  2. Dinner: This is the perfect time to relax with a healthy dinner full of lean protein and fresh veggies. This panko-crusted fish over kale is full of fiber, protein, and vitamins; it also only takes 20 minutes to prepare. If you're sensitive to gluten, try our cod with asparagus en papillote instead. Instead of eating in front of the TV, sit down at a table to take the time to really enjoy your dinner. You'll find that by doing so, you can focus on your food and not eat mindlessly, which is a common reason for overeating.
  3. Wind down: One of the best ways to detox the body is to make sure you have enough quality sleep. Sleep is connected to weight loss, stress levels, and overall health. Make a point to decompress from technology tonight, take a relaxing shower, and give yourself enough time to get a good night's rest. You can also unwind with this before-bed yoga sequence that will help you relax.

The Sad Trend That's Ruining Our Relationship With Food

"I know this is basically all carbs but . . . " I stopped myself mid-sentence when I realized I was trying to justify my food to someone else. I had ordered a gluten-free banana almond butter toast with local honey and cinnamon from Project Juice - a seemingly very healthy meal - but found myself borderline self-shaming for my "indulgent" choice in a carb-laden breakfast.

Pause for a moment: raise your hand if you've ever made yourself feel bad about a food choice, regardless of what that choice was. Raise your hand again if you've justified what you were eating to someone else, or have been ashamed of what you've ordered or eaten in the company of friends.

This is not cool, guys! And I know this because I've been there, too. It's a form of food shaming, and it's not chill.

We're shifting into a healthier, more accepting mindset with our bodies - loving our shape, embracing imperfections, and celebrating every stage of our physical journey. But have we refocused our negativity and self-deprecation to what's on our plate? I'm personally trying to nip that in the bud, stat.

I've noticed myself and others adopting a mindset of "it's healthy . . . but not healthy enough." For instance, an acai bowl is arguably a healthy breakfast, but you could find yourself saying, "It's all sugar," or, "There's not enough protein." Hello! It's natural sugar from fruit, not processed sugar and flour, and not every single thing you eat has to have protein.

Why are we in a competition with ourselves and the universe to out-healthy one another, so much so that we shame our otherwise-healthy choices? "Mmmm, that kale smoothie looks good, but the almond milk is sweetened so it's basically a Snickers." The f*ck?? We really need to wake up from this.

This also applies to foods that aren't conventionally healthy, like eating a piece of pizza or having a cocktail; we shouldn't feel guilty or like we need to earn these indulgences. I'm not saying just eat whatever the f*ck you want - we should absolutely be conscious about our choices. Obesity is still a problem in our country, as is heart disease, sugar addiction, etc., etc. But I am saying to acknowledge food as a choice, as fuel, and often as a means of pleasure and enjoyment - and that's OK! This is why we love the 80/20 approach to eating!

One of my favorite quotes about this idea was from a woman I interviewed last year about her 100-pound weight-loss journey who said, "Food is food and it can be used for fuel or pleasure, but it doesn't define my character." Here's why this is so important:

Your Relationship With Food

Constantly guilting yourself over food choices can spiral into something more dangerous than some off-handed comments (like an eating disorder). What can start off as something lighthearted, even funny (trust me, self-deprecating humor is my specialty), can turn into a truly negative relationship with food. As one recovering anorexic woman told POPSUGAR, "I innocently thought that I was just exercising and eating healthy, but over time, I continued to take it to extremes."

The concept of "healthy" is relative to each person. To my lactose-intolerant friend, my Greek-yogurt-based smoothie isn't healthy, but to me it's an excellent source of protein. There are no hard and fast rules or lines between what is or isn't "healthy," so by arbitrarily making up the rules, we subject ourselves to guilt, confusion, and negativity. Is a life of obsessively counting and restricting calories, second-guessing choices, and feeling guilty and sad at every single meal time something you want to deal with? (Hoping your answer is no, BTW.)

Your Impact on Others

What we say affects other people, too. Whether you like it or not, your words and actions impact those around you, and you might be more of an inspiration to your friends and family than you realize.

A few months ago I overheard some women in a Megaformer class saying, "We can go get those margaritas now - we deserve them!" and my first reaction was "Girl, please!" My second one was, "Is this really the language we've developed to communicate with other women?"

At the risk of sounding like a cheesy motivational cat poster (or a fake Gandhi quote), "Be the change you want to see in the world." Do you want your friends, workout buddies, co-workers, and family members to have a great, healthy relationship with food? Lead by example. If you're calling out your food as "not good enough" or "not healthy enough," you're giving the people around you a reason to second-guess themselves.

How We Fix It

Through my experience and bits of psychological research (including an interview with acclaimed psychologist Dr. David Burns), I've identified these distorted thoughts that are cropping up - here's how I plan to destroy them so they never, ever come back. Ever.

  • Focus on the positive. Sometimes you're going to eat something that might not be the healthiest thing you can put in your body. Instead of beating yourself up, focus on the good parts - if you enjoyed it, if it made you feel good, or if there was a redeeming quality nutritionally.
  • Avoid "all or nothing" thinking. Just because your smoothie is a little carb heavy from the fruit doesn't mean it's disqualified from the healthy category. A little cheese on your fajitas doesn't mean they were bad for you. Eating the yolk of the egg won't sabotage your diet. No food is "perfect," and as we mentioned, these "rules" are relative.
  • Stop comparing. Have you ever ordered a burger at a lunch when your friend ordered a salad and immediately regretted your choice or been embarrassed by it? You already know it's time to cut that out.
  • Remember, it's just food. Always remember that quote from above - food is food. It's just food. You don't "deserve it" as much as you don't "not deserve it." Eating a "healthy" food doesn't make you "healthy," just as eating an "unhealthy" food doesn't make you "unhealthy" (this is called "emotional reasoning"). Just enjoy your food, strive for great choices, and keep moving forward.
  • Avoid "should" statements. Using "should" and "shouldn't" when it comes to your diet is going to set you up for frustration and failure.
  • Be conscious of your words. This applies to when you're talking to yourself, talking to others, and talking about yourself in front of other people. Be positive, not degrading.
  • Don't project. Just as you don't want to food shame yourself, don't do it to others. Don't blame someone's health problem or physical woes on what they're eating, because everyone's body is different, and also you kind of look like a d*ck when you do that.

Stop yourself in your tracks when you start to notice these negative food thoughts cropping up or if you catch yourself saying them aloud to a friend. Soon enough, you'll have killed this habit before it even had a chance to form or take over your life. And the best part? You'll have a happier, healthier relationship with food. Mmmmm, food.
