The True Stories Behind the 3 Remarkable Women in Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures is an instant must watch. Based on the nonfiction bestseller of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly, the film tells the untold true story of three black female mathematicians who were instrumental in making NASA's first manned orbit around the Earth a success. While helping America propel forward in the space race, they broke down national barriers for both female scientists, as well as people of color. Out of the three outstanding women portrayed, Katherine G. Johnson is the only one still living today. She stated in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that the movie was "well done" and "pretty accurate." However, the film is a biographical drama, not a documentary. Take a look to learn more about these incredible women, as well as what was made up for dramatic effect.

Oscar Hall of Shame: 13 Movies the Nominees Probably Want You to Forget About

This year's Oscar nominees are so talented, but every actor has some bad movies in their past. Sometimes they're the early films in someone's career, and sometimes there are just rare missteps that they'd probably rather you forget about. But we have long memories, so for fun, we're looking at some of the less prestigious films of the acclaimed actors. And to be clear, many of these are so bad they're good (some are just so bad they're bad), but one thing is sure: none of these won them any Oscars.

Singin' in the Rain Impacted La La Land More Than You Think

While soaking in the sweet romance of a lovely film like La La Land, it's nearly impossible not to think of the musical movie classic, Singin' in the Rain. That sunset scene alone is positively dripping with memories of of Old Hollywood. Ryan Gosling has all the charm, whimsy, and ease of Gene Kelly. Hell, he even swings around on a streetlamp! Of course, the fact that the award season darling draws inspiration from so many classic movies, especially Singin' in the Rain, is far from a secret. The thing is, you may not quite realize how big the impact truly was.

On a surface level, it's not hard to see what other scenes (besides the twilight duet) in the film pull from Singin' in the Rain. In one sequence, Sebastian (Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone) stroll past an active movie set. The same thing happens during a scene in Singin' in the Rain. Even the sweeping "Epilogue" of La La Land calls back to the dreamy ballet sequences that seem to have become a movie musical staple. Damien Chazelle told A.V. Club, "I wouldn't have been able to sleep at night if I looked back and was like, 'Oh, I somehow convinced Hollywood to let me make a full-blown original musical, and I didn't put a dream ballet in it . . . the ones specifically that I was looking at were the ending of An American In Paris, or "Broadway Melody" in Singin' In The Rain, or the kind of Mickey Spillane dream ballet in The Band Wagon." The thing is, the intertwining goes much deeper than just onscreen references.

Our first inkling that La La Land has much deeper ties to Singin' in the Rain came earlier this month, shortly after the tragic death of Debbie Reynolds. During the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Ryan Gosling paid tribute to Reynolds and thanked her for "her wonderful career of work." He went on, saying, "We watched Singin' in the Rain every day for inspiration, and she was a truly unparalleled talent. So I thank her for all of that inspiration." But it wasn't just that they studied up on these movie musicals while making the film. Before they even began filming, the biggest forces behind La La Land took their experience a step further: they contacted Gene Kelly's widow, Patricia Ward Kelly. In a recent interview with The Inquirer, Ryan Gosling told the story of the meeting her.

"We had the great opportunity to meet Gene Kelly's widow before we started this film. We had dinner with her. She showed us a lot of Gene's personal things. He had every script that he'd ever done leather-bound. I got to see the leather-bound script of Singin' in the Rain. I went to the scene of the title number. Gene had handwritten on the margin, 'Hand umbrella to a passerby as you're leaving.' It was inspiring to see that. Because you remember that even though it's such an iconic film, it started with all those ideas . . . in this case, Gene just writing little notes on the margins of his script."

So, there you have it. La La Land does more than just pay tribute to its classical predecessor. Singin' in the Rain is stitched right into the fabric of the film's humble beginnings.

Daryl Dixon Isn't in The Walking Dead Comic Books, but Are His Stories?

Seeing as The Walking Dead is based on a long-running comic book series, it's nearly impossible not to compare the two. In fact, it can sometimes provide a distinct advantage: we can look into the fates of characters like King Ezekiel and the evil monster, Negan. And of course, we can't help but note the biggest differences between the two. When it comes to differences, the TV show has one glaring addition that sticks out above all else. We're talking about Daryl Dixon.

By now, it's pretty common knowledge that Daryl doesn't exist in The Walking Dead's comic books. Even those who don't read them have likely heard about his absence. Even so, it's tempting to wonder whether Daryl appears in the comic books in another form. Namely, has he absorbed the storylines of other characters along the way? We did some digging into the books and arrived at an interesting answer.

Shockingly, Daryl has never "borrowed" a major storyline from another character. All of his storylines are brand new. This presents an interesting challenge to the writers on a season-to-season basis, because they have to take the comic books into account while working Daryl in. What's more, his presence has consequences. While Negan only kills Glenn in the comics, he also kills Abraham on the show, upping the death count to two. In fact, it's because of Daryl's reckless punch that Negan picks Glenn as the second victim.

The closest Daryl comes to absorbing a narrative happens in this very season, when he gets kidnapped by Negan. In the books, it's Eugene that gets captured and tortured in the hopes that he'll become one of Negan's "troops." It seems like Daryl is the replacement until the midseason finale, when he escapes and Eugene winds up in captivity anyway. So, as it stands, Daryl's still doing his own thing. Then again, who knows what the future will hold?

Halle Berry's Oscar Acceptance Speech Will Still Make You Cry, Even 15 Years Later

Halle Berry's Oscar win for Monster's Ball made her the first black woman to win best actress and only the second to win an Academy Award since the ceremony's inception in 1929. She gave a heartfelt, emotional speech that still brings us to tears thanks to its sincerity and passion; Berry didn't just accept the honor on her behalf, but paid homage to the women of color who came before her.

"This moment is so much bigger than me," Berry told the crowd through tears. "This moment is for Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll. It's for the women that stand beside me, Jada Pinkett, Angela Bassett, Vivica Fox. And it's for every nameless, faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened." Berry will be returning to the Oscars stage on Sunday to mark the 15th anniversary of her historic win, and her acceptance speech is just as relevant as it was in 2002.

We Need to Talk About the Dress Emma Stone Wears in La La Land

La La Land took home best picture at the Critics' Choice Awards, but if you need another special reason to see the film, perhaps this style tidbit will do: Emma Stone's signature dancing dress was selected for a reason. Emma plays Mia in the movie, and though she partakes in plenty of dancing acts, the one set in front of a lit-up Los Angeles seems especially romantic. Costume designer Mary Zophres spoke to Fashionista about her wardrobe choice for the scene, explaining that she was inspired by an Atelier Versace gown Emma wore to promote The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014:

"It's stunning on Emma and I pitched [that color] to [director Damien Chazelle] for that sequence. We had our first fitting and Emma started spinning around in this dress. She loved it. I loved it. She and I thought at the same time, 'Why don't we just use this fabric?'"

After hiring Rob Phillips to hand-paint florals onto the fit-and-flare, the look was just as flattering as Zophres imagined it. Read on to see the La La Land costume once more, then check out the red carpet number that inspired it, along with more of Emma's recent appearances in yellow. One thing's for sure: regardless of the silhouette or occasion, Emma looks downright gorgeous in the shade - the same goes for her new character, Mia.

Just How Many Black Actors Have Won an Oscar? The Number Is Disturbingly Low

Image Source: Getty / Lee Celano

With nominees like Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Ruth Negga, and Mahershala Ali rounding out the acting categories, Sunday night's Academy Awards could potentially deliver the most diverse set of winners in years. The Oscars have been plagued by obvious race issues since they began in 1929, and things seemingly came to a head with the #OscarsSoWhite discussion a couple of years ago; the overwhelming lack of diversity in nominees in both 2015 and 2016 resulted in Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs taking bigger, more noticeable steps to double the number of diverse members in its voting body by 2020.

Nevertheless, a black actor (the incomparable Sidney Poitier) wasn't awarded until 1964, and it was only in 2002 that Halle Berry became the first black woman to win a best actress trophy. So, just how many black actors have won Oscars over the years? Fourteen. A whopping fourteen distinguished, talented people in 87 years. Scroll through to see who they are and learn about the records they've broken.

1940, Hattie McDaniel

The Gone With the Wind star made history when she became the first African-American to ever win an Oscar. The film's director David O. Selznick had to call in a special favor just to have McDaniel allowed into the building (the Ambassador Hotel, where the ceremony was held, did not allow black people), and instead of getting to sit with the rest of the cast and crew she was escorted to a small table far away and against a wall, which is where she accepted her best supporting actress award.

1964, Sidney Poitier

Thanks to his stellar performance in Lilies of the Field, Poitier became the first black male to win an Oscar in general, but also the best actor award.

1983, Louis Gossett, Jr.

He is the first black male to win the best supporting actor award for his role in An Officer and a Gentleman.

1990 and 2002, Denzel Washington

Washington took home the best supporting actor trophy for Glory, making him the second black actor to do do. When he won his best actor Oscar for Training Day in 2002, Washington shared a powerful moment of solidarity with Sidney Poitier, who was given a Academy Honorary Award at the ceremony. Washington is the most nominated black actor in Oscars history with seven acting nods since 1987.

1991, Whoopi Goldberg

The comedian won best supporting actress for her role as Oda Mae Brown in Ghost, which was presented to her by Denzel Washington. She had been nominated once before for The Color Purple in 1986, making her the first African-American female to earn two acting nominations.

1997, Cuba Gooding, Jr.

Yes, before he hit the small screen in The People vs. O.J. Simpson, Gooding won the best supporting actor award for Jerry Maguire. He was only 29 at the time, making him the youngest African-American male actor to win an Academy Award.

2002, Halle Berry

Berry's win for Monster's Ball marked the second time a black woman took home an Oscar, and the first time two black actors won in leading role categories in the same year (Denzel Washington also won for Training Day). She gave a heartfelt, emotional speech that is memorable for it's earnest homage to the women who came before her. "This moment is so much bigger than me," Berry told the crowd through tears. "This moment is for Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll. It's for the women that stand beside me, Jada Pinkett, Angela Bassett, Vivica Fox. And it's for every nameless, faceless woman of color that now has a chance because this door tonight has been opened."

2005, Jamie Foxx

Foxx swept award season for his outstanding portrayal of Ray Charles in Ray, and his Oscar win added to the pile. He also became the first African-American actor to receive two acting nominations in the same year (he also scored a best supporting actor nod for Collateral).

2005, Morgan Freeman

After nabbing the best supporting actor award for Million Dollar Baby, Freeman became the oldest black actor to win an Oscar at 67 years old.

2007, Forest Whitaker

Whitaker beat out Leonardo DiCaprio and Will Smith when he won the best actor award for his role in The Last King of Scotland.

2007, Jennifer Hudson

Her performance in Dreamgirls nabbed Hudson a best supporting actress win at just 25 years old, making her the youngest African-American actor to win an Oscar. It also happened to be her first-ever movie role.

2010, Mo'Nique

The comedic actress surprised audiences with her very, very serious role in Precious, for which she won the best supporting actress award.

2012, Octavia Spencer

The actress, who is nominated this year for her role in Hidden Figures, won the best supporting actress award for The Help. The movie is the third to produce nominees for both best supporting and best actress (Viola Davis).

2014, Lupita Nyong'o

For her role as Patsey in 12 Years a Slave, the Kenyan actress became the first black African to be nominated for an acting Oscar and win in any category. It also marked special significance for being Nyong'o's first major movie role.

Thalia Looks Like a Sparkly Queen on the Red Carpet at Premio Lo Nuestro

We couldn't expect less from Mexican superstar Thalia. She showed up at the 2017 Premio Lo Nuestro in Miami, wearing a sparkly silver flapper-inspired dress with a low-back that stole the show, hands down.

Thalia, who is a performer at the show with her single "Todavía Te Quiero" with De La Ghetto, revealed on the pink carpet that she found her incredible gown on social media. The singer said she reached out to Dominican designer Giannina Azar over direct messages on Instagram after she spotted a short clip of the dress, part of the 2016 collection, on her feed. Of course, Giannina jumped at the chance of dressing Thalia, documenting the process of getting her ready for the red carpet with (what else?) Instagram videos and photos.

Scroll ahead to check out Thalia's look from up close, including her amazing burgundy eyeshadow and gorgeous ponytail.

Here's What the New Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch Oatmeals Taste Like

General Mills released two new instant oatmeal flavors inspired by your favorite cereals: Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Currently, these offerings are only available in Canada, but POPSUGAR snagged a few packages so we could review them for you. Spoiler: they taste just as awesome as you'd expect.

Lucky Charms

The Lucky Charms oatmeal smells as comforting as the cereal. We cooked ours with milk, resulting in a more marshmallow-y and rich flavor. I personally preferred the hot oatmeal to the oat cereal. You get the marbits and iconic Lucky Charms flavor and load up on your whole grains. It's a win-win-win. One thing worth noting, the cereal is sweet but not overwhelmingly so. It only contains nine grams of sugar compared to a packet of Quaker Oats, which has 12.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch Oatmeal

This oatmeal also tasted just like Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. Some tasters thought it translated into oatmeal better. It had all the cinnamon-y, buttery flavor with a slight saltiness. Don't stir in the crunchy toppings so as to maintain the "crunch" component. I'm inspired to serve my oatmeal this way - loaded up on the cinnamon, butter, and spoonful of sugar. You can't go wrong.

It's with a heavy heart that I tell you General Mills doesn't have any plans to expand this release to America, but you could always try voicing your excitement about the product by calling the General Mills Consumer Services line (1-800-248-7310). In the meantime, all you marshmallow fanatics can eat your feelings with the new Peeps-flavored Oreos, which tasters have likened to Lucky Charms in cookie form.

Fifty Shades Freed: All the New and Returning Cast Members

Now that Fifty Shades Darker has come out, we're all about Fifty Shades Freed. The third and final film in the trilogy is due out on Feb. 9, 2018, and since it was shot in tandem with the second movie, the cast has already been announced. While it was previously reported that Hugh Dancy would appear in the second film as Dr. John Flynn, he has denied the casting. Around the same time, news that Tyler Hoechlin would play Boyce Fox surfaced. Though he did confirm the role, his character doesn't appear in Fifty Shades Darker, meaning he may have been cut from the films. Until we get confirmation either way, we're leaving him out of our roundup. Here are the returning and new cast members we'll definitely see in the upcoming film!

10 Things Dads Probably Shouldn't Say to Moms

Moms, especially newbies, can be a little sensitive when it comes to childrearing and the statements made around it - and no worse a culprit than the men in our lives. It doesn't matter how amazing a father he is, sometimes dads say the wrong thing at the wrong time. I'll be the first to admit that more often than not, it's usually us moms taking it the wrong way. But it still doesn't hurt to laugh at the things dads should probably refrain from saying to the mother of their children.

This Harry Potter Coffee Shop Makes Caffeine Even More Magical

In Henderson, NV, a coffee shop is serving butterbeer lattes and caffeinated items of the like in a beautiful space entirely inspired by Harry Potter. Bad Owl Coffee opened up in Feb. 2016, much to the excitement of local Potterheads - although we have a feeling some hardcore fans will be taking a trip there soon (and also to that bar in Toronto).

Though the coffee shop's drinks and desserts look appealing, it's definitely all about the decor at Bad Owl. Each table is painted with an iconic phrase or design that's synonymous with the beloved series, and there's even a little Hedwig - Harry's snowy owl - waiting at Platform 9 3/4.

Take a virtual tour of Bad Owl to see how the shop is making coffee that much more magical.

The Pop-Tarts Cafe might be the most exciting one we've seen yet. The creative menu turns the breakfast pastries into foods like crepes, nachos, fries, and more. Beyond the savory foods that are actually Pop-Tarts in disguise, there are also plenty of sweet treats to give you a sugar rush, like Strawberry Pop-Tart shakes and S'mores Pop-Tart "burritos" wrapped in a sweet crepe. If you're salivating just thinking about it, read on to get a closer look at everything we tried at the amazing cafe, and consider each dish inspiration for your own Pop-Tarts-inspired meals at home.

Age Investigation: How Old Are the This Is Us Characters and Actors?

We always knew NBC's new emotional roller coaster, This Is Us, would be playing around with time. In fact, it was imbued in that shocking twist at the end of the very first episode: two of the show's biggest storylines would continue to unfold, decades apart. Even in more recent episodes, the flashbacks keep coming, and with all this jumping, we couldn't help but wonder about a different aspect of time. With Mandy Moore playing the same character but older and with three very different actors playing three siblings of the exact same age, we can't help but wonder: how old are the show's main players?

Leonardo DiCaprio's Oscar Acceptance Speech Never Gets Old

As we near this year's Oscar ceremony, we can't help but look back to one of last year's most memorable moments: Leonardo DiCpario's Oscar win. After decades of making movies, DiCaprio finally won an Oscar for his role in The Revenant. The actor had notoriously been always a nominee, never a winner, since his 1994 nomination for What's Eating Gilbert Grape, but as of 2016, he could check "Academy Award" off his bucket list. His speech was everything you could possibly want, plus some words about global climate change. DiCaprio also had a big night reuniting with Kate Winslet, his Titanic costar. Watch it again now, find out how we knew this would happen all along, and read DiCaprio's comments from the press room!

I Still Have My "Lovey" at 25 - and I'm Completely Normal (I Swear)

Ever get a whiff of your clothes on vacation and think, "Smells like my house," and in that moment you feel like you're a little closer to home? That's how it feels for me when I am near my 25-year-old stuffed bunny, Boogie - it feels like home when he's around.

When I was nannying, my pint-size employer slept with a little blue bear - aptly named "Little Blue Bear" - and if he ever went missing over the course of the day, a sh*t fit would be had, and I could never blame him. I used to do the same thing as a child when Boogie went missing - it's terrifying when you've lost something that makes you feel so secure.

But feeling such a strong attachment to an object is a red flag for some parents who think their child won't develop correctly with a stuffed animal or blanket - sometimes called a "lovey" - as a crutch. But they're a completely normal part of development, and seeing as I am 25 and still have mine, I'd go so far as to say they're a completely normal part of life in general.

I recently read an article about children and why they're so attached to their loveys, and I found myself nodding my head in agreement to every point made.

". . . these objects play a key role in a child's life, providing comfort when they're upset or anxious, giving them a sense of security as they gain independence, and acting as a soothing substitute when you're not around. . . . If a mother [or father] is gone, you can bring that soothing feeling back with an object."

At 8 years old, I started going to sleep-away camp, and even though I wanted to go, there were still times I missed home - like going to sleep at night - so I'd clutch Boogie, get a familiar scent, and fall blissfully asleep feeling safe and secure.

At 18, I went off to college in Pennsylvania, and even though it was exactly like camp, there were times I longed to be back in New York with my friends and family - enter Boogie.

At 22, my family got a dog who thought that Boogie was for him - and the boy loves to chew things to bits - so Boogie made his way from my bed to the shelf above it, and though the first few nights felt weird, having him there was enough.

At 25, I moved out of my parents' house, and in the beginning, I would look around and feel as if the house I was standing in would never be my home. I initially left Boogie on that shelf in my old room, until I went to my parents' house one night, looked around at some of the stuff I left behind, and spotted him. I've never had the feeling that my new house isn't my home since I brought Boogie back with me that night.

All that being said, I'm a completely normal, functioning adult with a job, friends, and an apartment who can totally go on vacation and sleep at night without a stuffed animal - but there's not a chance in hell I'd ever get rid of it.

Adults go through plenty of periods in their lives where having something that aids with self-soothing is beneficial - going through a breakup, moving to a new city, settling into a new job, dealing with loss. Those attachments that are formed with a lovey inspire trust and security to help with situations that induce anxiety and sadness.

So yes, I'm 25, and a once beautiful, soft bunny - now full of holes; missing stuffing, a nose, and ears; and no longer soft to the touch - is something that can instantly make me feel 100-percent safe, secure, and at home, no matter where I am, and I'm pretty grateful for that.

Did the Oscars Solve Its Diversity Issue With This Year's Nominations?

The nominees for the 2017 Oscars were announced in January, more or less yielding the results the industry anticipated. It came as no surprise that La La Land continued to dominate with a staggering 14 nominations, and Casey Affleck earned a best actor nod in spite of some troubling allegations from his past. After last year's list presented a shocking lack of diversity and earned an #OscarsSoWhite hashtag, though, the biggest question this time around is whether or not the new list of nominees is more inclusive.

Did the Academy diversify its list of nominees this year? In short, the answer is yes. Among the 20 acting nominations, seven were given to people of color. Ruth Negga and Denzel Washington earned best acting nods for Loving and Fences, respectively, while the supporting categories include Viola Davis, Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, Octavia Spencer, and Dev Patel. Outside of acting, it's important to note that a handful of predominantly black stories are receiving recognition. Barry Jenkins is up for best director thanks to his moving masterpiece Moonlight, which received a total of eight nominations including best picture. The trend continues with Fences (which received four), and Hidden Figures (which scored three).

For all the progress the ceremony has made toward inclusion, we've still got a ways to go. Yes, there is plenty of diversity in this year's list of nominees, but seven out of 20 is still uneven. There's still a noted lack of Asian and Latino actors and actresses. There's still a shortage of LGBTQ stories. Only four women have ever been nominated for directing, and Kathryn Bigelow was the first to win for Hurt Locker in 2010. In order to better address the problem, we need to go further. It's not just about those the Academy chooses to highlight; Hollywood needs to incorporate more diversity in the stories we see and the actors and actresses we're seeing on the big screen.

We'll see on Sunday just how diverse this year's winners are.

The Vampire Diaries: Who Is Most Likely to Die in the Finale?

There are a few episodes left of The Vampire Diaries, and we can already tell that the final goodbye is going to be a tough one. Not only are a handful of old cast members returning, but we recently learned that the finale will also feature a major character death. While we definitely know that Elena Gilbert will be one of the attendees at the funeral, the fate of the rest of the characters is still up in the air. Since we love theorizing about the show, we're breaking down the five most likely suspects for that HUGE plot twist. Read at your own risk.

5. Matt

Could Matt's family have even more dark secrets? It's possible that Maxwell hell bell had some lingering magic left in it that could lead to his death. Although, if we're being completely honest here, Matt has managed to stay alive, and human for that matter, for eight seasons, so we don't really think Julie Plec would decide to kill him off now.

4. Caroline

Caroline's death would certainly be the most unexpected. Maybe she decides to take the cure to be human with Stefan and something goes wrong? Although, out of all the characters, Caroline has always been the most content with her vampirism. We can't see her compromising that for a guy, even if it is Stefan Salvatore.

3. Bonnie

Unless Kai breaks his spell, Elena's life is still linked to Bonnie's. And seeing that Nina Dobrev is officially returning for the finale, we can't help but wonder if that means BonBon will meet an untimely demise. Although, the way Plec has talked about how emotional the finale will be, her death seems a bit too on-the-nose.

2. Damon

This death would definitely be a blow to the heart. Not only is the final scene set at the Salvatore house, but Entertainment Weekly did say that Elena would be the last person to say goodbye at the funeral. Perhaps she was having one final moment with her true love? While we can only imagine the water works this scene would cause Delena fans, Plec did confirm that Elena and Damon will come face to face in the finale.

1. Stefan

Ever since Stefan took the cure and become mortal, he has been fixated on making up for his past sins. Could the final key to redemption and making up for turning Damon into a vampire be reuniting him with his true love? Perhaps, instead of Bonnie dying, Stefan finds a way to link his life with Elena's instead. Not only did Paul Wesley admit to tearing up over his final script, but he also revealed that his final scene is with Dobrev. What if the finale teaser is actually Stefan saying his last goodbye?

The 1 Feature You Need to Start Using on Google Maps - Seriously!

I'm the type of person who loves making lists of everything, from my day-to-day to-do's to adding cities to my bucket list. But when it comes to planning out a vacation or a short trip, those lists are out of control. I text a bunch of my friends, get advice from co-workers, and end up having suggestions of where to go and what to do on five different post-it notes plus a few on my phone. If you're anything like me or are looking for a better way to group places to see and visit, then you'll want to try the latest update on Google Maps.

The feature, which is out on Android and iOS, lets you easily create lists of places. Planning a trip? Look up all the places you want to go and save them. Have a friend coming into town? Create a list of places to visit and share it with them. That's the best part; any list you create can be shared with a friend via text, Facebook, and more.

Curious about how to make your own list? Follow our step-by-step guide ahead. Trust us, it should make going somewhere new less stressful.

The 1 Ingredient That Makes the McCafé Shamrock Drinks Different Than the Shake

By now, you may have consumed your weight in McDonald's minty Shamrock Shakes (I don't blame you!), but have you tried the new line of chocolate Shamrock drinks? I visited a McDonald's near the POPSUGAR headquarters to see how all of the drinks are made. You may know that the shake machine dispenses the Shamrock Shake and new Chocolate Shamrock Shake, but did you know the shake isn't the base for the hot chocolate or coffee drinks? Yes, this includes the frozen, blended coffee Frappé. Instead, McDonald's achieves the signature mint-chocolate flavor with the mocha-mint syrup you see pictured. This is the secret ingredient for transforming all of your favorite McCafé drinks into Shamrock!

What people love about the Chocolate Shamrock Shake is the creamy richness from the ice cream, strong vanilla flavor, and chocolate-minty finish. The sauce captures these flavors, but I must admit it is slightly chocolaty and less sweet than the flavors found in the shake . . . but this isn't a criticism at all! It's still quite tasty. We wondered if McDonald's had simply repurposed its peppermint mocha sauce (which came out during the holiday season), but if you compare the syrup ingredients listed in the Peppermint Mocha Latte and the Shamrock Mocha Latte, they are different indeed! The chocolate peppermint syrup is heavier on the peppermint flavors, while the mint mocha syrup is heavier on the chocolate flavors.

5 Tips For Potty Training at Night

Frustrated that your child isn't potty trained at night? Dry nights are often the last frontier of potty training. Even after becoming day-trained, it may be months or even years before a child is fully potty trained at night. In addition to urging patience (since a large factor in nighttime potty training is a child's physical readiness), our readers suggest the following helpful tips for toilet training at night.

1. Limit Liquids

One popular potty-training tip from readers is to cut off liquids for at least an hour before a child goes to bed. Some moms, like Cheryl H., advocate limiting liquids even further while potty training: "I think the best thing that worked for my three kids was to cut drinks to a minimum two to three hours before bedtime." Just be sure your child stays hydrated with plenty of water earlier in the day.

2. Wake-Up Calls

Although some moms argue against disrupting a child's nighttime sleep, others encourage waking potty-training children for extra bathroom trips, either before you go to bed or at several intervals during the night. Wisconsin mother-of-two Jane M. shares: "When I first started night-training my son, I would set my alarm for every two to three hours, then stretch it out from there."

3. Accessibility

Another potty-training tip from moms is to ensure your child has easy access to the toilet. "Can he get in and out of his pajamas by himself?" asks Kimberly V. "Can he get in and out of bed and onto the potty by himself, or out of bed and to you to wake you in time? I have actually put a potty chair in my daughter's room to make it more accessible to her in the hopes that this will encourage her to pull down her own pants and go on the potty when she wakes." Natasha W. also suggests night-lights to prevent kids from being "afraid to go to the bathroom by themselves in the middle of the night."

4. Mattress Protector

Be prepared for inevitable slipups with appropriate bedding. As Naomi K. suggests, "Invest in a waterproof mattress protector. They are a great invention. Or you can buy a waterproof mat that lies on top of the sheet for your child to sleep on; they are made of cloth so can be washed if your child does have an accident."

5. Positive Encouragement

Be positive in your approach to potty training: don't dwell on the accidents, and celebrate the successes. "The 'dry morning happy dance' was popular," recalls Janie D. "Encouragement is so good for all of us."

The Ordinary Items You Throw Out Everyday Just Popped Up on the Moschino Runway

Our takeaway from the Moschino Fall 2017 show? One person's junk is another person's treasure. Jeremy Scott transformed ordinary items - bubble wrap, UPS boxes, magazine cut outs, trash lids - into wearable runway looks. The first set of models wore beige dresses, tops, and shirts inspired by the packages we use (and toss out) every day. Words like "fragile" and "caution," were splashed across the clothes while small boxes doubled as hat fascinators to drive home the point.

"Yes, we totally see where this is going," we thought as Kendall Jenner, Gigi and Bella Hadid walked out in similar looks. The designer had appeared to use the post office as inspiration. But, folks, that wasn't all.

Jeremy still had plenty of magical creations up his sleeves, including dry cleaning bags turned dresses, duct-taped gowns, and hip-hop influenced outfits. Models went from having '60s inspired haircuts to wearing oversized gold medallions and colorful snapbacks. More non-traditional items were turned into hats and a dress covered in literal garbage was sent down the runway. The designer could have chosen to stop there, but this is Moschino we're talking about.

As a quick juxtaposition to all the "trashy" outfits, the designer created a set of evening wear that spoke to glamour and opulence. Suits and long-sleeved applique gowns appeared on the runway, reminding us there are two ends of the spectrum to what is beautiful. And every person has their own version of what's cool. If anyone was left still confused about Jeremy's message, however, post show the designer stepped out in a shirt that read, "Couture is an attitude." There you have it.

Attention: Dads Don't Need Your Parenting Pity

If you're a mom out in public with your kids and they start acting up, beware: the judgments will start flying like dry leaves on a windy day. I'm talking side-eye from all sides. Nobody seems to do you the courtesy of considering that your kids might just need naps, or be hungry, or be having an off day.

Instead, your entire performance as a mother is based on this one undesirable little slice of life. You can't control your kids? You must really suck as a parent. The sanctimonious glances burn right along with your flaming cheeks as you try to get everyone under control. Because that's what moms are supposed to do.

But if you happen to be a dad in the same scenario? It turns into a different scenario altogether. Because the looks you get from strangers aren't looks of judgment at your terrible children and your crappy discipline, but of bemusement and good-natured pity.

Aw, look at that dad struggling with his kids.

You're like the bumbling father in the old sitcoms, trying (and humorously failing) to do "the mom's job." The "woman's work." And that's not fair. Not to moms, for sure, but - even though it gets them off the hook - it isn't fair to dads either. It's a deeply rooted, stubborn double-standard that needs to go away now that gender equality has evolved past, say, the 1960s.

Dads are no longer relegated to the role of sole breadwinner who comes home at the end of the day, sits in his recliner with his pipe and slippers, and waits for a home-cooked meal from the little woman. Even the description is laughable. So why are we still treating them like cavemen when it comes to their ability to act as caregivers?

Why are we still treating them like cavemen when it comes to their ability to act as caregivers?

Then there are moms, who labor under the weight of society's expectations. We wipe noses and wipe butts, bandage boo-boos and help with homework, shuttle kids back and forth to school and practice and appointments, and make sure everyone has balanced meals and clean clothes and doesn't look like they crawled out of a dumpster. But if we don't do it all perfectly, balance everything (without chipping our manicures), and make it look easy, we're labeled as not quite good enough. Not having our stuff together. Lower-caliber parents, not a natural, perpetually operating a few steps behind, "good mom" level.

However, for doing the exact same things, fathers are lauded as amazing, involved, hands-on dads. Whether they do it well or not is of zero consequence - all that matters is that they're trying. People figure dads are just automatically going to be sub-par, so they get mad props just for participation, while moms are expected to do it all and kick ass (and face harsh judgment and unfair assumptions if they don't).

Seriously, people?

My husband is a military veteran, a lightning-quick thinker, a charismatic achiever, and a personally and professionally accomplished human being. So I don't buy for a minute that he needs to be held to a lesser standard in the child-rearing department just because he happens to be a dad instead of a mom, and neither should anyone else. He's a great dad. A capable dad. But he didn't get that way just by showing up, and he deserves more credit.

Sure, fathers may handle things a little bit differently, but that's not to say their methods aren't equally effective. To assume they're having trouble because they're somehow inexperienced or inferior does them a huge disservice. If they're having trouble, it's not because they're dads; it's because parenting is hard. Whether you're a man or a woman.

And personally, I think we all deserve a medal just for keeping our kids alive some days.

Holy Sh*t: Rey Could Be a Palpatine in the New Star Wars Trilogy

It's been well over a year since Star Wars: The Force Awakens blasted into our galaxy, and we're still processing. While there are some lingering questions about the latest trilogy, one glaring mystery seems to stick out among the rest: who the hell are Rey's parents? While there are plenty of plausible theories, one insane internet claim out there alleges the most unexpected lineage for Rey: she could be related to Emperor Palpatine. Is Rey the granddaughter of the evil Sith Lord? We're unpacking all the most prominent evidence so you can decide for yourself.

Her Fighting Style Is Similar

Rey's first move in her lightsaber duel with Kylo Ren is a forward stab. This also happens to be the exact same first move Emperor Palpatine executes in Revenge of the Sith. It's also worth noting that these are the only two Force-sensitive individuals to use this form of attack. They also share another move: swinging the lightsaber overhead and bringing it down, sledgehammer style. It can't just be coincidence . . . can it?

Rey Seems to Be Pulled Toward the Dark Side

There are a few passing moments in The Force Awakens that indicate a darkness within Rey. It's interesting to see how much she relishes telling Kylo Ren that he'll never be as great as Darth Vader. Later during their lightsaber battle, her bloodlust almost seems uncontrollable, and there's a moment near the end where she almost delivers a final deadly blow . . . until she lets him live. Could she be teetering on the edge of the dark side? Is it possible she has the power of the Sith running through her veins?

OK, Wait, Isn't Luke Rey's Father?

While Luke has been one of the most popular picks among the candidates for Rey's parents, there's a lot of evidence to suggest that it's just not so. First and foremost, it's simply just too obvious. The Force Awakens is filled with nods to a connection between Luke and Rey. There's the fact that Luke's lightsaber "calls out" to her. Then there's all of her Force-sensitivity and Jedi mind tricks, and that loaded scene with Luke himself at the end. It's so obvious! It's so heavy-handed! It would just be way too easy.

It stretches beyond that, of course. If Rey were Luke's daughter, could we really believe Han Solo and Leia Organa knew nothing of her existence? And why would Maz Kanata imply that Rey's parents were dead? If Luke is not the father, it leaves room for someone else.

The Skywalker vs. Palpatine Phenomenon

It's worth noting that this dichotomy appears in every Star Wars trilogy. In the original trilogy, Luke Skywalker faces off against Emperor Palpatine. In the next trilogy, Anakin Skywalker, still teetering on the edge of the dark side, also fights Palpatine before he becomes the deformed Sith Lord we recognize him as. In the new trilogy, Kylo Ren is a Skywalker. His mother is Leia Organa! Wouldn't it make the most sense to have another destined face-off? A Skywalker against Rey, a Palpatine? Furthermore, it would almost add a dash of poetic impact to the new movies. With a Skywalker as a Jedi and a Palpatine as a Sith in the preexisting films, this new entry is flipping everything on its head. Kylo Ren, the Skywalker, is a Sith. And Rey, possibly a Palpatine, is on the good side . . . for now.

There's so much more to unpack: the fact that Supreme Leader Snoke and Kylo Ren are obsessed with getting their hands on Rey, the fact that Rey is skewed toward the dark side on the poster for The Force Awakens, and even Luke's apparent apprehension in that haunting final scene. If you want to dig even deeper, this video does a pretty good job of covering everything:

OK, OK, we'll take off our tinfoil hats . . . for now.

18 Reasons Adele Is the Role Model Our Kids - and We - Need in This World

Adele's résumé is already long and impressive, but I'd like to add a new piece to it: role model. My love and respect for Adele run deep, and for years she has been someone I look up to, but as I get older, I realize she is also someone I would be proud to say my kids believe is their role model. She is strong, she is successful, she is kind, and she is downright hilarious. Adele carries out her life with an air of confidence in herself and is unapologetic about sharing her feelings and opinions, no matter what they may be. As a wife and mother, she strives to fiercely protect her private life from the public but is never quiet about how much she loves her husband and son.

At only 28 years old, Adele has already accomplished so much, and she's endlessly humble about it. Yes, her success is inspirational, but her attitude toward life is more so. She is someone I shamelessly admire, and these 18 reasons are exactly why our kids should do the same.

Sofia Reyes's Road From Red Carpet Newbie to Pop Princess

Twenty-one-year-old Mexican singer Sofia Reyes is such a staple at Latin award shows, like Premios Juventud and Premio Lo Nuestro, that it's hard to believe it's only been a few years since she made her red carpet debut. Yes, though it seems crazy, she made the jump from YouTube to Los Angeles as a 17-year-old, thanks to bachata crooner Prince Royce. This might shock you even more: though Sofia has had several hits, including "Muevelo," her duet with Prince Royce "Solo Yo," and "Llegaste Tú" featuring Reykon, she just released her first full album in early 2017!

But, TBH, we weren't surprised to see Sofia's star power take over even before her record was out. It takes just one look at the 42 red carpet snaps ahead to see her fashion-forward style and confidence scream: "I'm here to stay."

24 Actors Who Won Oscars For Playing Real People

It seems that whenever an actor takes on a famous face in history - or even a lesser-known person with a great true story - it only ups the chances of taking home Oscar gold. Just last year, Leonardo DiCaprio was added to the long list of actors who have taken home an award for playing a real person, thanks to his role in The Revenant. This year, Ruth Negga, Natalie Portman, Meryl Streep, and Andrew Garfield all received nods for playing real people. There are many more among the Hollywood elite who have won a statue for spot-on portrayals of real people (so many that we can't even list them all here!), but take a peek at this short list of memorable performances.

7 Reasons Betty Is the Murderer on Riverdale

Betty Cooper is not to be trusted. During our short time with her on Riverdale, we've clocked her borderline obsession with Archie Andrews, her infamously "crazy" family, and her role as the resident good girl. It's clear that nothing is as it seems in the small town; secrets beget secrets, and crime and discord lurk constantly in the shadows. Oh, and Jason Blossom, one of the most popular students at Riverdale High, is dead. We have plenty of murder suspects to keep us busy, but I'm not fooled by one of the most innocent-seeming characters in the bunch. You guessed it: I think Betty Cooper is our cold-blooded killer, and I have more than a few reasons to help explain it.

1. She Has a Motive

By now, it's no secret that Betty has a vendetta against Jason Blossom. She believes he's the reason her sister, Polly, landed in the mental hospital. It's true that Jason's sinister involvement in Polly's break doesn't come to light until the group finds the football team's "playbook," but it's clear that Betty had blamed Jason long before his involvement with Polly was confirmed. We learn that in the very first episode.

2. She Doesn't Have an Alibi (That We Know Of)

Granted, details surrounding Jason's murder are very sparse. At this point, we only know the whereabouts of a handful of people on that day: Archie, Ms. Grundy, and Cheryl. We'll probably get more as the weeks roll on, but for the time being, we don't know what Betty was up to.

3. She's So Easy to Write Off

You mean Betty? The cute, blond girl-next-door type who's all sunshine and rainbows? Betty seems sweet. In fact, of the whole group, she's the person I'd probably suspect the least. And, well, isn't that always the person you should suspect the most?

4. She Has a Bad Temper

There have been a few Betty outbursts in the show so far, but one in particular sticks out. Remember when Cheryl Blossom is casually hanging at the Cooper residence? Cheryl says something about Polly that sets Betty off, and Betty fully snaps, then tells Cheryl to get the hell out of her house. With a temper like that and an easy trigger, there's no telling what Betty may or may not have done in the heat of the moment.

5. She Has a Dark Side, Is Possibly Crazy

We can't pitch Betty as a suspect without bringing up her "full dark, no stars" moment. In "Chapter 3," she and Veronica plan to get back at the captain of the football team after learning about his slut-shaming history. They concoct this plan to make him confess to what he's done, and Betty goes all in. She has an entirely different look, complete with a jet-black wig - like full Velma Kelly in Chicago! It's like she's another person. Later, she takes the torture a little too far by amping the jacuzzi heat up to 115 degrees and pouring maple syrup all over the victim. She seems to believe she is Polly. Veronica gets super uncomfortable and begs her to stop. Isn't this ringing any major alarms for anyone else?

6. She's Trying to Find Someone to Blame

In "Chapter 4," Betty seems almost desperate to believe that Ms. Grundy murdered Jason, so much so that she goes to great lengths to implicate her. If Betty were the killer, it would make even more sense that she'd take it upon herself to find a scapegoat. Then she doesn't have to face the consequences of what she's done.

7. Her Family Clearly Is Hiding Some Dark Secrets

Let's hone in on that telling scene in "Chapter 4." Betty, her mother, and Archie's dad all find Archie and Ms. Grundy together, and all the drama unspools from there. But it's Betty's words that cause the most concern. If her mother tells anyone about Archie's secret, Betty vows to say she robbed Ms. Grundy and made it all up. "It will be like I finally snapped," she says. "Like Polly. It will prove what everyone thinks about us. Crazy runs in that family. Like mother, like daughter."

The Theory, in Conclusion

So, here's what I think. Maybe Betty's little alter ego is more than just a fun disguise for torturing football jocks. I think she has a split personality - one that she's not even aware of - that may have developed from the trauma of her sister's breakdown. I think there's a chance Betty doesn't know she murdered Jason. She blacked out on the Fourth of July, then Dark Betty took hold and murdered Jason Blossom. It's crazy, but it's exactly the kind of twist a soapy teen drama like Riverdale could pull off.

Everything We Know About Orange Is the New Black Season 5

If you're still finishing season four of Orange Is the New Black - seriously? - and you care about spoilers, you might want to rethink reading the rest of this post. Having said that, there's nothing too revealing about season five details, because there really aren't very many yet. The latest season of the hit series premiered on Netflix in June of last year, and we just got a release date and the very first teaser. Here's what we know - and what we can deduce - about season five.
