Bask in the Glory That Is Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell's Relationship Evolution

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are undeniably one of Hollywood's most inspiring and well-loved couples. They began dating in 1983, share four children - Kate and Oliver Hudson and Wyatt and Boston Russell - and have become a picture-perfect example of the contemporary blended family, eschewing marriage in favor of a non-formal commitment. When asked about why she and Kurt haven't tied the knot, Goldie said, "The question is, 'Why (get married)?' It's not, 'Why not?' We love each other. We fight the way people are supposed to fight. We love our lives together."

In addition to building a family, they've both established storied separate careers and have also starred together in three films - The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, Swing Shift, and Overboard, which they recently watched for the first time ever. Goldie tweeted out about the date night, saying, "Kurt n I snuggled up and watched Overboard together. The first time we have seen it all the way thru since it came out. Now that's Romance." The Genius Trick Queen Letizia Used to Look Taller Will Surprise You

We're going to guess Queen Letizia of Spain's New Year's resolution was to be even more adventurous in her fashion choices, because she's on fire this year. The royal, who in past years has repeated outfits often, stepped out in another new impressive look, this time for a ceremony celebrating the visit of Argentina's president and first lady.

The striped black-and-white sparkly midi dress with a crisscross neckline was beautiful, but it served another purpose: to make Queen Letizia look taller and leaner. The vertical stripes created an optical illusion that made Letizia seem even more modelesque than she normally is. Keep reading to see more pictures of the queen's look and to find a few links to get an eye-tricking dress of your own.

Mom’s Message to All Women About Touching Their Breasts Should Be Required Reading

Jess Higgins isn't just a breast cancer patient, she's a mom and that will always come first.

In the months following chemotherapy, radiation, and having her breasts and ovaries removed, she's found herself struggling to feel pretty, but this fighter from Australia realized that she's not alone in dealing with this "ugly" situation, which goes deeper than many realize. "Ugly because my kids miss out on their mom when I'm sick. Ugly because I'm menopausal. Ugly because I've got no idea what's going to happen to me and my family," she wrote in a touching note to women everywhere.

As she is working to empower other women who are battling the same demons to feel pretty, she also has a message for other moms who are cancer-free:

Just touch your breasts. Daily. Touch them, if it feels different, heavy, hot, lumpy, even just a bit abnormal - if your nipples are more sensitive than usual.

The initial touch, and consistently checking them, makes you more conscious of how your breasts should feel and look.

Look at them.

It's not until you look at and touch your breasts often that you can ever say, 'That feels different.'

If it weren't for Jess noticing a difference with her own body, and sometimes feeling like a "d*ckhead" in order to get doctors to take her seriously, she wouldn't have been diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer as early as she was. But Jess persisted because she knew she had kids, she knew something was wrong, and she was going to do whatever it takes to be there for them.

"As soon as I got breast cancer, I started my 'journey to health.' My nails are strong, I'm having chemo, but my body feels the difference with all the changes I've made," she wrote. "My wish for you is to be able to do the same for yourself, without experiencing breast cancer in the first place. So this is me. Pretty, when there is so much ugly around me."

Thanks to Karl Lagerfeld, We Can Now Predict Meryl Streep's Oscars Dress

Days before the Academy Awards on Feb. 26, Karl Lagerfeld claimed that Meryl Streep abruptly turned down the gown he was in the process of making for her. Not only that, but the Chanel creative director also accused Streep of allegedly choosing a gown from a designer who was going to compensate her in return.

According to Lagerfeld, the venerated actress had reportedly requested an an embroidered gray silk gown from Chanel's latest Couture collection. She did, however, ask that some alterations be made to the neckline. As Lagerfeld was in the process of customizing the dress, he said he received a phone call notifying him that Streep would instead be wearing a gown from a designer who was going to pay her.

In an interview with Women's Wear Daily, Lagerfeld explained, "I made a sketch, and we started to make the dress." He then said he received a phone call from one of Streep's representatives who said, "Don't continue the dress. We found somebody who will pay us." He additionally insisted that Chanel never pays celebrities to wear their designs. Lagerfeld then snuck in one final dig when he said, "A genius actress, but cheapness also, no?"

While Lagerfeld is sticking to his story, a member of Streep's team is saying otherwise. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, the representative said the claims are entirely false. Adding, "It is against [Meryl Streep's] personal ethics to be paid to wear a gown on the red carpet."

We may never be able to get down to the bottom of this one, but we at least learned a little bit about what Streep might wear on the Oscars red carpet! Since she originally chose a gray silk gown, it's likely that she'll end up going for a similar option from a different designer, of course. In an attempt to narrow down our prediction, we rounded up gray gowns that the actress has worn through the years, as well as a similar piece from Chanel's aforementioned couture collection.

1 Single Mom Is Using Her Tax Return to Spread a Message About What Matters Most

One South Carolina mom is going viral for a heartfelt message she shared on Facebook. A single mother of two, Christina Knaack posted a photo of her tax return along with the details of what she planned to do with the money.

"I got back $5,600 on my taxes. Instead of buying my kids the latest Jordans or fancy electronics, I paid my rent for the YEAR," she wrote in the post. Christina, who uses her minimum-wage job to provide for her children, went on to describe how her kids have inherited her values. "I know that a roof over my kids' heads is what's important," she wrote. "My kids don't want for anything because my priorities are straight."

By spending the tax return wisely, she will now have some extra money leftover to spend on doing fun activities with her children, she wrote.

Christina's post received more than 300,000 reactions and 130,000 shares. Plus, moms everywhere rallied to show their support for her by commenting sweet messages and sharing their similar stories. One woman, Lory Vuletich, commented, "Wonderful example to your kids . . . way to go mom!" Another mom, Stacey Bayes, commented about how she's in the same shoes as Christina. "I do this exact same thing!" Stacey wrote. "Yeah, it would be nice to go out and buy some luxuries with that money, but the best luxury to me is knowing my kids are provided for. Much respect from one single Mom to another! Keep working girl."

Jordan Peele is making the rounds promoting his crazy-good new horror movie, Get Out, and he stopped by The Late Late Show With James Corden on Thursday night. They take all the hits you love from *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys and change the lyrics to reflect what the guys were really thinking when they were singing. James Corden is the best, you guys.

Drop Everything and Play This Beyoncé Video Game Right Now

Everything Beyoncé does is iconic, from her recent pregnancy announcement to her incredible performance at the 2017 Grammys. And let's not forget everything about Lemonade, like the visual, ethereal music videos and her jaw dropping tour. We're not the only ones obsessed with Beyoncé, either; a group of developers were so impressed with Beyoncé's "Hold Up" music video that they created an entire 8-bit video game about it.

The game, called "Lemonade Rage," features Beyoncé smashing things in her iconic dress from the "Hold Up" music video. The goal of the game? Get enough lemons to make lemonade by smashing cars, fire hydrants, and "Good Hair" ads. Be careful: you do need to avoid "haterz," Illuminati conspiracists, and bullsh*t as they pop up. As you play, you'll also hear an 8-bit rendition of "Hold Up" by 8 Bit Universe.

I've played it a few times and it's pretty addicting. And if you're anyone who is still outraged over Adele beating Beyoncé in several categories at the Grammys, like album of the year, you'll definitely find this game cathartic.

The Scientific Reason Parents Are Always Mixing Up Their Kids' Names

It seems like one of the things most parents have in common is their inability to keep their kids' names straight. Especially when you're angry or in a rush, you may catch yourself calling out for the wrong kiddo and it comes out in a jumbled "Eliza-Anna-Caitlin-d*mn it" type of mess.

No matter whose name you're throwing into the mix with your kids' - your husband, best friend, or pet - there's actually a scientific reason people do this, and parents can take comfort in it: love.

According to a review in Memory and Cognition that studied the phenomenon of misnaming, it tends to occur among people that you have an equally close relationship with. From the 1,700 participants, most of those who called someone by the wrong name were moms, and their mix-ups typically included all people they love. "Overall, the misnaming of familiar individuals is driven by the relationship between the misnamer, misnamed, and named," the study states.

In large, this happens because of how the brain organizes information. Quartz explains it as the mind breaking down information and filing it into related groups before storing it away. This means that this system, known as the semantic network, keeps the names of your nearest and dearest (like all of your kiddos) in the same place. Then, when you're trying to quickly grab one of these specific names, you end going through all of them.

So basically, the next time you do this, you can explain to your kids that it's not because you have favorites and can't remember the other names, but it's the exact opposite - it proves that you love them all equally!

Bella Hadid Wore Her Sexy Runway Look Straight to a Dinner Party

When you're Bella Hadid, wearing clothes straight off the runway isn't uncommon. Needless to say, when she attended the Bulgari dinner party, we immediately recognized her shimmery minidress. Bella recently wore the revealing look down the Alexandre Vauthier Couture runway, where it reminded us of Kendall Jenner's 21st Labourjoisie birthday dress. It seems Bella was taken with the style too, toting the dress from her show in Paris to Milan.

The model added a diamond Bulgari serpent necklace and glittery heels to her outfit, making for the perfect finishing touch. The barely there dress is probably one of the sexiest looks Bella's worn, and we won't forget it anytime soon. Scroll to shop similar pieces if you're feeling inspired.

Goldie Hawn's Glitzy Evening at the Vienna Opera Sure Beats Our Friday Night Plans

Every year, Austrian entrepreneur Richard Lugner invites a special guest (read: beautiful celebrity) to accompany him to the annual Opera Ball in Vienna. This year's esteemed pick? Goldie Hawn! The Snatched actress arrived to the Vienna State Opera on Thursday evening on the arm of Richard, and it looked like she had an incredible time (as always). Dressed in a gorgeous white and silver gown, Goldie made her way through a fawning crowd and took a choice seat next to Richard as they watched the performance.

It certainly seems like she enjoyed herself more than Richard's 2014 guest, Kim Kardashian. After being paid a whopping $500,000 to show up, the reality star claimed Richard inappropriately and aggressively grabbed her throughout the night, and she also endured an appearance from Austrian celebrity Chris Stephan, who approached her dressed in a white tuxedo and full blackface while pretending to be Kanye West. Although Goldie has yet to personally reveal how the night shook out, the photos seem to imply that she had an exciting night out at the opera.

How a Sexually Violent, Subversive Thriller Earned Its Star an Oscar Nomination

Warning: mild spoilers follow.

The film Elle has no interest in making its viewers comfortable. Instead, the movie opens on a rape scene that is loud, startling, and brutal. Seeing sexual assault on screen is not out of the ordinary in film; what is out of the ordinary about Elle is almost everything happens in the aftermath of the attack. The French movie, helmed by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven (yes, he also did Showgirls), had until last month flown relatively under the radar in the United States. Certainly, most people watching the Golden Globes in their living rooms were taken by surprise when star Isabelle Huppert won best actress in a drama at the award ceremony - and many were again surprised when she scored an Oscar nomination on Jan. 24. Now, as the movie garners more and more attention, it's sparking a complicated conversation about rape culture, our ideas about victims and survivors, and gender roles. Here's why:

It Offers a Unique, Subversive Take on Gender and Rape Culture

After the rape that opens the film, Michèle (Huppert) throws her dress in the garbage, tidies the shattered china from her living room floor, takes a bath, and orders takeout sushi. She does not call the police. A few days later, while out to dinner with her ex-husband, her best friend Ann, and Ann's husband, she divulges the rape in an emotionless, matter-of-fact way that leaves her loved ones - and certainly most viewers - dumbfounded. The dispassionate announcement is presented as completely strange and even darkly funny.

We also learn that Michèle is not only a victim of rape, but plays an interesting role in propagating rape culture herself. She and her best friend, Ann, own a very successful video game company that thrives on narratives with hyperviolence and sexual fantasy at their centers. Shortly after her own rape, she's reviewing a current cut of a new game with her staff of mostly 20- and 30-something gamer guys, and demands they make a female character's reaction to an assault by an oversize, tentacled monster more "orgasmic." Moments later, in the same meeting, she is challenged and belittled by one of her own employees in a moment that pretty much any woman will recognize as a classic example of workplace sexism. These moments of dissonance continue through the film. Michèle incites our empathy in her vulnerable moments, but she can also be cruel, demanding, and selfish. She is not simple or "likable"; she's human.

It Features a Bold, Mindbendingly Great Performance by Isabelle Huppert

These complexities open the door for a tour de force performance by the 63-year-old Huppert, who has never shied away from controversial material in her career. She is perhaps best known in the states for her role as the masochistic lead character in The Piano Teacher. In 2012, she costarred in Amour, an Oscar-winning, controversial film about an elderly couple and assisted suicide (or murder, depending on your opinion). As Michèle, even the fleeting nuances of Huppert's facial expressions are entrancing, and she embodies Michèle's steely, cool nature as though she were reborn in the character's own skin.

The Ending Is Shocking - and Deeply Ambiguous

I don't want to reveal too much, because I do think this film is worth watching. But the last third of Elle - and, especially, the very end of it - calls almost everything you thought you understood about the movie's take on abuse, rape, and power into question . . . as well as some of what you thought you knew about the plot.

I'm not sure if I can agree with the conclusions it draws, primarily because I'm still not precisely sure what they are. What I do know? The film ends on a moment in which Michèle, as a literal survivor, wields all the power over the men in the room. Still, I can see how some viewers might read the film as a mockery of women, or an anti-feminist backlash to the mens rights-y idea of "victim culture." But my strong hunch is that Michèle's story is intended as a critique of our own complicity in rape culture and a cautionary tale about ignoring a woman's power; whether viewers are comfortable with its means to that end is the question. Days later, and I'm not sure that I am - but the fact that I'm still thinking about it proves, for me, Elle's success as a work of art.

Zoe Saldana Steps Out For the First Time Since Welcoming Baby Number 3

You wouldn't know Zoe Saldana has 2-year-old twins and a newborn at home, because she looked like she is getting plenty of sleep while she was on the red carpet for Cadillac's annual Academy Awards party at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. Just look at her radiant skin!

Wearing a gorgeous cream leather dress with embroidery, ruffles, and a high slit, Zoe showed off her slim figure just days after taking to Instagram to announce the birth of baby Zen, saying: "Marco and I are elated to share the news of the birth of our son Zen. We couldn't feel more blessed with the new addition to our family. #threeboys… oh boy!" Zoe is a total pro, often speaking very honestly about her parenting struggles, including sleep training and diaper changing two boys at the same time. Olympian Opens Up About Accepting Her Heartbreaking Miscarriage Experience

As an Olympic gold medalist, Dominique Dawes is used to persevering through tough times while staying focused on her end goal. But after suffering a miscarriage, this athlete is sharing with other moms that this pain is more intense than any training and that most people don't realize exactly what someone in this situation goes through because they often suffer in silence.

In a heart-wrenching Facebook post, Dominique explained that acknowledging the fact that she lost a child in utero is the hardest thing she's ever been through. "I was in complete denial and ashamed . . . I've been holding onto hope that there is still a fighting chance that this isn't true, but I'm facing the certain reality that it is the hard truth," she wrote. "I know so many women out there have been through this, but it doesn't make it easier."

Although some may not think about the stages between finding out that your baby no longer has a heartbeat and actually miscarrying, Dominique made the truth of the situation devastatingly clear. "Being told that I will miscarry is one thing, but actually going through the process naturally was a whole different roller coaster of emotions, which took a physical toll on me," she wrote in separate heartbreaking Facebook post. "For some reason I was still holding onto hope again that there was a baby with a strong beating heartbeat inside me. Denial . . . hope . . . call it what you may."

When she returned from a trip a few weeks after learning of her "impending miscarriage," Dominique felt that it had officially began and was eventually rushed to the hospital. "I'm typically not one to ask for help, but as I struggled to catch my balance as I was taking care of my daughters, I knew I needed to go to my neighbors ASAP," she wrote.

After an ultrasound, Dominique learned that her body had nearly completed the miscarriage and that she would not need a D&C (dilation and curettage). "I know this is TMI - but I want women out there to be aware that there is no exact science to all this, and always ask as many questions as possible," she wrote.

Dominique is still working to accept that this is her reality as she waits for her body to fully complete the miscarriage. "It still hurts. But, having God, a loving husband (who has totally stepped up and cleans the dishes every night now), and my two most precious and prized gifts - my two baby girls to comfort me and stand with me through these tough days," she wrote. "Knowing the reality and accepting this miscarriage has brought me to a better place. At first I was ashamed and blamed myself, like I did something wrong. Now I'm looking forward with hope for the future!"

Little Tikes Is Voluntarily Recalling 540,000 Plastic Swings After Injuries

It may be a beautiful day wherever you are, but it may not be the best day for swinging - Little Tikes is voluntarily recalling 540,000 of its 2-in-1 Snug 'n Secure Pink Swings, which were discovered to pose a potential fall hazard due to the plastic seat cracking or breaking. The recall comes after the company received around 140 reports of the swing breaking, which caused 39 injuries to kids from cuts and bruises to a few head bumps and two reports of broken arms.

The 2-in-1 Snug 'n Secure pink swings in question were manufactured between November 2009 and December 2013 and sold at retailers such as Toys 'R' Us and Walmart for around $25. Each of the swings being recalled has a model number of 615573, which can be found molded into the plastic on the back of the swing. If that model number matches your swing, the second step is to check the molded circular date stamp (see photo below), also on the back of the swing.

Your product is included in the recall if the molded inner arrow of the date code stamp points to 10, 11, 12, or 13, or if the inner arrow points to the 9 stamp in addition to the outer arrow pointing to a number of "43" or higher. No other date codes or other colored swings are affected.

If your swing is included in the recall, Little Tikes advises you to cease use immediately and to contact the company - through its website or by phone - to get a refund in the form of credit toward another Little Tikes product.

And since Allison revealed that Ricky hates doing big red carpets, her brother is the perfect stand-in. That's cute and all, but when the host shared a face-swap photo of Ricky and Douglas to prove how much they look alike, things just get creepy. See for yourself in the video above.

Kendall Jenner Channels a '90s Mom in the Trendiest Hoodie at Fashion Week

Vetements x Champion hoodies are all over Fashion Week. From New York to Milan, showgoers and models alike are being snapped in the cozy sweatshirts with exaggerated sleeves, cutouts, and run-off logo straps. But after the Fendi show, Kendall pulled out a tidier piece from the hit collaboration: a baby-pink cropped design. Kendall showed off her signature style in a look that screamed "'90s mom" thanks to high-waisted khaki trousers and a square chainstrap bag.

Spotting Kendall (or any of the Kardashian-Jenners) in Vetements x Champion isn't unusual. Perhaps that's because Kim, Kanye, and the rest of the family are good friends with Vetements designer Demna Gvasalia, and he just might have stocked their wardrobes. Besides, Khloé, Kourtney, Kylie, and Kendall seem to be maintaining a whole closet full of sweats these days, Kourtney keeping her own Champion x Urban Outfitters coordinates in steady rotation. Scroll for a look, then shop a bunch of their separates for yourself.

Lea Michele Found a Perfectly Sexy 1-Piece to Buy in 2 Colors

It's definitely important to find the right swimsuit for water activities. You want to be comfortable and look cute, which is why we're taking notes from Lea Michele. The star, who's on vacation in Maui, Hawaii, went paddleboarding with friends. Instead of wearing a superstrappy bikini, she opted for a simple one-piece. The Solid and Striped number had two sturdy straps and dipped low in the back. It was sexy but still wearable for Lea's daytime adventure.

This was the second time she wore this particular style in Hawaii. She also has the swimsuit in black, proving that a versatile one-piece can be the best investment. Consider this a sign for you to scoop up one or two with our shopping picks below.

22 Times Milo Ventimiglia's Smile Stopped You in Your Tracks

Let's get the obvious out of the way first: Milo Ventimiglia is an extremely sexy man. If you didn't fall in love with him back in the day when he was on Gilmore Girls, you probably sure as hell love him now for his role as perfect husband and father Jack Pearson on NBC's The Is Us. In addition to his charming personality and sweet real-life friendships with his costars, Milo is beautiful to look at. And his smile? Lay me down and put me to bed. The actor has opened up in the past about how a birth defect involving dead nerves in his lip led to his self-described "crooked smile," but we honestly think it couldn't be more attractive. Whether he's full-on grinning or only slightly smirking, it makes us weak in the knees every damn time.

How Donald Trump's Presidency Has Already Affected Award Season

By now, it's no secret that Hollywood has given award season a political tint. We're got some of the biggest ceremonies of the industry under our belt (with the Oscars still on the horizon, of course), and it seems like every show is more political than the last. It should also come as no surprise that the primary impetus for the movement comes from the election of President Donald Trump and the avalanche of worrying executive orders that accompanied his first couple of weeks in office.

The real question is, what triggered this swell of political commentary in the first place? It might just have been the very moment that Trump became president-elect that guaranteed this kind of Hollywood blowback. After all, celebrities began opposing Donald Trump directly after the election and well ahead of award season. It is possible, though, that award season offered the perfect platform to speak out at the perfect time. You could argue that Meryl Streep's Donald Trump call-out at the Golden Globes marked the moment award season irrevocably became politically charged. Or maybe it was the burst of energy that came from the Women's March on Washington that had an all-bets-off effect, thus making the SAG Awards the season's most political show yet. Regardless of how we arrived here, it's worth looking into some of the different ways this unrest has manifested in award season so far and the true irony of the fact that the Hollywood "circus" has shined a spotlight on a very real and present issue.

The Critics' Choice Awards were technically the first award show of the season, but they happened in December. They fell shortly after the election, and the lack of explicit commentary might be blamed on the fact that everyone was still numb from the results. At the beginning of January, the Golden Globes marked a more official kickoff. The night was certainly sprinkled with plenty of political jokes from host Jimmy Fallon and a few select winners. Then, of course, there was Streep's speech, which not only inspired a collective hush in the room but also elicited an obviously bitter tweet from Trump himself. Once we got to the Screen Actors Guild Awards at the end of January, though, Hollywood stopped holding back.

The SAG Awards swept through LA on Jan. 29, and there was no shortage of moments that directly or indirectly took on Donald Trump. On the red carpet, Simon Helberg and his wife made a statement about refugees. During the show, Ashton Kutcher called Trump out on his immigration ban, Julia Louis-Dreyfus filled her acceptance speech with Trump burns, and actor David Hopper seized Stranger Things' win as an opportunity to give an inspiring speech about acceptance and unity. Even in the press room backstage, stars gave a political twist to their Q&A sessions. Sarah Paulson in particular spoke about how crucial it is for actors to speak out.

Now that February has arrived, we've still got two of the biggest award shows ahead. The Grammys are sure to be ripe with political commentary; music is historically used to enact change, to protest, and to make a statement, political or otherwise. In the realm of the Oscars, what started as last year's #OscarsSoWhite controversy has grown into something else. Iranian director Asghar Farhadi has already vowed not to go because of the president's recent immigration ban. Furthermore, while this year's diverse list of nominees may or may not have been a byproduct of last year's complaints, the remarkable amount of inclusion will only serve to strengthen sentiments that undermine Donald Trump. This powder keg will only get closer to exploding as the days roll on.

Here's where the irony comes in: if anything, Hollywood and popular culture have always been seen as a distraction from the tragic events of the real world. Over time, the general population has collectively created a divide between "hard" news and celebrity news. Now, it seems like this award season in particular has become a large vessel for opposing Trump. Consider the subversion of the Golden Globe Awards: the first ceremony was held in 1944 in an effort to distract Americans from World War II. In 2017, the Globes were part of the incendiary force that mobilized Hollywood and set the trend for actors to take sides, speak out, and stand up for what they believe in. This very "distraction" has put our attention right where it needs to be: back on President Donald Trump.

Natalie Portman's Outfit Looks Super Fancy, Until You Look Down at Her Shoes

On a day-to-day basis, Natalie Portman's maternity look is super casual and laid-back. Roll out the red carpet, however, and this expectant mama transforms into what we call a total style goddess. She's worn floor-sweeping gowns, body-hugging minis, and a variety of printed dresses - all looks perfectly complementing her baby bump. Natalie was even one of the first stars to wear coveted Spring '17 designs like a custom Brandon Maxwell ruffle minidress.

The actress even wore a powerful piece from Dior to the Women's March. For the significant occasion, Natalie chose a t-shirt that read "We Should All Be Feminists," from the fashion house's Spring '17 collection.

From runway to the stage, this is one Dior piece that'll go down in history and we're glad the cameras are here to capture her best maternity style moments. Since she's not due until Spring, a tidbit she revealed to Jimmy Fallon, it's a sign Natalie's got many more red carpet style snaps to come. Scroll on to see some of her best looks so far.

Should You Exercise When You Are Sore?

Even if you exercise regularly, you've felt it: the aching, can't-sit-down-or-lift-my-arm muscle soreness the next day after a workout. That pain you feel a day or two after an intense workout is known as DOMS, or delayed onset muscle soreness, and is caused by muscle microtearing, which helps build muscle fiber and make them stronger. As easy as it may be to use muscle soreness as a reason to skip your next-day workout (guilty as charged!), DOMS is rarely a good excuse to bypass the gym. Here's what you should be doing instead.

  • Don't premedicate. "Don't mask what your body is telling you," says Crunch trainer Tim Rich. He advises clients to not take painkillers before a workout so they can understand how their body reacts to a workout. Taking Advil before your workout could, for example, cause you to push yourself farther than you should go or mask an injury until it's too late. If you're experiencing DOMS after a workout, however, an NSAID or other anti-inflammatory OTC painkiller and icing where you hurt can help.
  • Assess the pain. It's one thing to have DOMS, which is a good thing. But if you finish a workout and feel like you are uncharacteristically sore, or that you've injured yourself, pushing through the pain may not be the best thing. "If you're new to working out, aches and pains are normal," says running coach Eric Chen. However, when workout pain feels more like a burning sensation, it "automatically means stop right there and rest." In addition, Eric recommends seeking out professional advice if you experience an abnormal pain that reoccurs when you exercise again. Make sure you pay attention the difference between an injury pain and normal muscle soreness, and stop and rest if you feel like you've strained something.
  • Eat protein. Muscles are made out of protein, so to shorten the time it takes muscles to heal, try to eat some sort of protein right after you exercise - this will also help you build more muscle over time. Studies have found that recovery drinks that contain protein help decrease muscle soreness compared to normal carbohydrate-based sports drinks.
  • Alternate workouts. Being too sore to work out may be a popular excuse, but it's not always a good one. If you're nursing sore legs from a rigorous hike, spend the next day working on your abs or arms. Allowing an overworked part of your body time to rest while working on another is a great way to optimize your time and ensure that you stay on track. You can also opt for another aerobic exercise or yoga - cardio and stretching can both help soothe your muscles.

No matter how you deal with muscle soreness, it shouldn't last forever. Go see a doctor if you find that your soreness isn't getting any better.
