Raven Is Officially Heading to Bachelor in Paradise!
Nick Viall didn't pick Raven on The Bachelor, but the fashion boutique owner will have another shot at love when she joins the upcoming season of Bachelor in Paradise. During the "After the Final Rose" episode, the 25-year-old confirmed to host Chris Harrison that she will be joining the Bachelor spinoff next season. While it's still uncertain who else will join the cast, we are definitely crossing our fingers that business owner Corinne Olympios will partake in the journey.
Ansel Elgort and Kevin Spacey's Baby Driver Looks Like the Ultimate Heist Movie
If you were going to recruit a celebrity team to help you pull off a massive heist, who would you pick? Ansel Elgort wouldn't necessarily be at the top of our list, but Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright could not have chosen better for Baby Driver. The action flick sees Elgort as Baby, a talented getaway driver who has to complete one last job for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey) before he can leave that world behind him with his girlfriend (Lily James). The trailer is not only full of insane driving and nuggets of wisdom from Jamie Foxx ("The moment you catch feelings, is the moment you catch a bullet") but also a pretty great soundtrack. See it when it hits theaters on Aug. 11.
Mom's Important Warning After a Vacuum Gave Her Toddler Fourth Degree Burns
Although vacuum cleaners are common household appliances, one mom wants parents to realize just how dangerous they can be for little kids.
Jade Bishop warned others on Facebook after her 16-month-old son was left with fourth degree burns. Along with upsetting photos of the toddler's blistering hand, the mom from England explained how being an inquisitive toddler, her little one loves to follow her around when she's vacuuming the house.
"No big deal, he even pushes it and helps me occasionally, so I turn the vacuum off and turn my back to unplug it from the wall, I hear Theo turn it back on, and turn my head to hear him screaming," she wrote. "I yank the plug from the wall and he has managed to put his thumb in the bottom of the Dyson where the bristles spin at a crazy speed. I go to him quicker than I ever have to see he's got a nasty looking burn on his hand!"
After Theo was sent to the hospital to see burn specialists and plastic surgeons, his mom learned that his injury is worse than she initially realized. Not only does he have a severe burn, but possibly exposed tendons, which means he may need skin grafts as well as surgery to help prevent restricted movement as he grows.
"Please, please, please do not let your children near the vacuum cleaners! After talking with my nurse and her telling me just how common this kind of burn is, it makes you realize that: A) I'm not the worlds worst mom . . . B) We are not the first and we won't be the last!" she wrote. "But making people aware of it could stop just one more tiny finger or thumb from ending up like this."
The Bachelorette: Rachel Meets Her Contestants Early
The Bachelor just wrapped on Monday night, but we already have a sneak peek of Rachel Lindsay's season of The Bachelorette. During the "After the Final Rose" episode, the 31-year-old attorney started her season a little early by meeting four of the men who will be competing for her heart. While the guys didn't reveal their quirky job titles just yet, they did give some hilarious (and sometimes downright awkward) one-liners.
The first contestant, Demario, got straight to the point and offered her tickets to Las Vegas to elope, while the second man, Blake, got a little flustered and told her she smelled nice. In possibly one of the most awkward moments of the night, the third contestant, Dean, told Rachel that he was ready "to go black" and "never gonna go back," which Rachel politely laughed off. Thankfully, Eric from Baltimore made up for it by partaking in an impromptu dance with the Bachelorette. We might be jumping the gun, but we think Rachel just found her perfect match. Catch all the craziness below.
This "Little Book of Highlighter" Is the Most Unique Way to Strobe
What if blotting papers and highligher had a baby? Well, good news, kids - they just did! UK brand MUA Makeup Academy revealed an Instagram that is going viral! The video shows the label's MUA Luxe Shimmer Sheet in action.
This product is basically a mini book of metallic sheets that appear to have a similar consistency to blotting papers. But instead of taking off your face gloss - they add it! Stamp, swipe, or dust these shimmery papers on your face, and it will leave a highlighter stamp. This is not a drill.
The MUA Luxe Shimmer Sheets are offered in two shades: Rose Gold and White Gold. And they only cost £3, which is under $4! The only downside is you'll need to bug your friend abroad to snag them for you, since as of now MUA doesn't ship to America. Bummer.
For now, get your fix watching a mesmerizing video of the product, ahead!
Raw Video Captures the Universal Emotions of Becoming a Parent
There are few moments in life that elicit more emotion than the moment you become a parent. In an intimate black-and-white video called "The Big One," real parents share the exact minute their child was born, which is followed by raw footage of each of those life-changing moments in time: directly before and after they become moms and dads.
The emotional short, which is a part of The Honest Company's "Honest Moments" video campaign, is highly personal, yet universal at the same time. "Perhaps one of the biggest in any person's life - one that creates a very distinct before and after - is the moment of your child's birth," the video's caption reads. "From this moment forward, the way you see the world and your place in it is forever altered."
Britney Spears Whisks Niece Maddie Off to Disney World Following ATV Accident
It's safe to say Britney Spears did not have a case of the Mondays this week. The "Make Me" singer rounded up her family for a fun-filled trip to Disney World in Orlando, FL, and documented every amazing moment in an Instagram slideshow. Britney shared a few photos of herself with her adorable (and grown-up!) sons, Sean and Jayden, as well as nieces Lexie and Maddie, who took a spin on the teacups and screamed their way down Splash Mountain. Maddie, who recently recovered from a horrifying ATV accident, sat in her aunt's lap while they enjoyed some massive milkshakes at Planet Hollywood Disney Springs. It's also important to note that the Spears family rocked matching red Mickey shirts like true tourists while roaming the park, proving that celebrities really are just like us.

Dax Shepard Reveals the Hilarious Consequences of Swearing in Front of His Kids
Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell may seem like a picture-perfect celebrity couple, but even they have their disagreements. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday, the CHiPs actor told the host about an argument he's currently having with his wife over the awkward placement of his La-Z-Boy chair in their living room. "I'm winning the battle, I certainly won't win the war," he jokingly told Ellen. Of course, the chair is the least of their worries. Dax also explained the hilarious parenting moment he had when he accidentally swore in front of his 3-year-old daughter, Lincoln. Let's just say, it didn't end well.
Hilarious Mom Captures the Universal Dread Parents Feel Over Snow Days
We are all this mom.
Posted by What The Flicka? on Saturday, February 21, 2015
As a child, a snow day is a magical 24 hours full of hot chocolate, snow angels, indoor play, and movies. For a parent, a snow day is 24 hours of hell making your child cup after cup of hot chocolate (and snacks), spending 40 frustrating minutes dressing your kids for two minutes of snow-angel-making, and hours of watching indoor play and movies on repeat in what feels like slow-motion. If you've ever dreaded a snow day since having kids, you are most definitely not alone, and this funny mom feels your pain in the realest way.
Backed by her daughter singing "Let It Go" off screen, this mom looks into the camera and explains that it's not only a snow day, but it's the third snow day in a row. Based on the universal dread all parents feel over snow days and her facial expressions, it's safe to say she's at the end of her sanity rope, but she's too hilarious not to laugh at.
"Let it go. No school," the mom says in the video, which is originally from Feb. 2015. "Let it go. This'll be day three. School's still out. All day. Frozen. Elsa. . . . Olaf. . . . Anna." The mom continues the roll call of characters with the help of her little one in the background and expresses a few ill feelings toward the cartoon people, which her daughter overhears and responds to for an absolutely hysterical ending to this gem of a clip.

Is Emma Watson Really Singing in Beauty and the Beast?
We're drawing closer to the release of Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast. In recent months, we've been spoiled with everything under the sun when it comes to the latest project. We've been treated to plenty of chill-inducing trailers, plus gorgeous pictures galore and a treasure trove of details. And, in an even more exciting development, we got our first listen to Emma Watson's singing voice. In situations like this, we know people will still ask whether or not Watson is actually singing. So, well, is she? We did a little digging and we have exciting news.
The short answer is yes, that really is Emma Watson singing. The actress opened up about the "terrifying" experience during a print interview with Total Film. "I sing, so that's really unexpected," she said. "I've never had to do that for a film role before, and I think people will be interested to see me do something very different like that . . . It gives me a different challenge, really." Disney corroborated the fact when they tweeted the aforementioned clip, a snippet from "Something There," saying explicitly that she's singing.
Here's your exclusive first listen of @EmmaWatson singing 'Something There' from Beauty and the Beast. #BeOurGuest http://pic.twitter.com/AWpcrDmELY

But wait, there's more! Not only is Watson using her voice for the movie, but there's also a chance her live vocals could be used in any of the various numbers. In a separate interview with Collider, Luke Evans shared a fun tidbit about the musical process. "We pre-recorded every [song], but some of us sang live on set as well, during the takes," he revealed. "We were mic'd, and they recorded that, and I think afterwards, in sound, they'll be able to chose whether the live version is better than the pre-recorded version." So there you have it. In addition to all her other magical skills, Emma Watson sings. You can hear her on the soundtrack, and when Beauty and the Beast hits theaters March 17.

Strong Abs Start With This 7-Minute Workout
Get the printable version of this seven-minute HIIT workout here!
When it comes to high-intensity interval training (HIIT), the pros definitely outweigh the cons. While it may feel unpleasant to push your body to go faster and harder for that short time period, the rewards are worth it: HIIT helps you blast more belly fat, save time, and burn way more calories (even after your workout is long over) than a lower-intensity workout alone. A 2013 study published in the American College of Sports Medicine's Health and Fitness Journal found that a few minutes of training at almost your max can accomplish all of this in way less time than a traditional workout. How much less? Try just seven minutes total.
The ACSM's interval workout consists of 12 exercises, which should be done at an intensity of eight on a scale of 10; each exercise lasts 30 seconds, with a 10-second rest in between. Repeat the circuit if you'd like a longer workout. Keeping the intensity up - and the rest periods short - is key, so keep reading to learn the moves and then get going! You'll need a mat and a chair or bench.

Check Out This Genius Hack to Get Your Child to Eat Their Veggies
It's an all too familiar scene; you're sitting at the dinner table, engaged in a staredown with your child who refuses to take even one bite of their green beans. You've used every weapon in your arsenal. Bribery with desserts, screen time, play dates. Threats of no dessert, no screen time, no play dates. And the worst threat of all: an early bedtime for the night. But nothing works.
You are desperate for a new strategy. Something magical enough to rescue you from this nightly battle, forever. The secret strategy is simple: silence.
Try this trick: about 30 minutes before dinner time, when your child is starting to get hungry, set some celery sticks on a plate on the corner of the kitchen counter, and do not say a word! This is when the magic happens - when there are veggies sitting out, free for the taking, but you have not told your child that they need to eat some.
You will be amazed when they grab a celery stick as they pass through the kitchen and start happily crunching away. You will have won the nightly battle over veggies before dinner has even started! However, it is extremely important that you do not ruin it by saying anything. This means no comments like, "I'm glad you like those celery sticks!" or "Aren't those celery sticks so good?"
The moment you say a word, you will see your child's face glaze over, their body stiffen, and their mind prepare to engage in a full-on battle to the death. The next time they pass through the kitchen, you better believe they won't grab another celery stick; in fact, they'll stay as far away from that plate as possible. After all, no one is going to make them eat their vegetables! No one is going to tell them what to do!
Once you've gotten the hang of this sneaky strategy that makes mindless eating actually good for your kids, you can start using different veggies. Even ones that they've never had before! A few of the veggies that work great are carrot sticks, celery sticks, jicama sticks, raw sugar snap peas, raw snow peas, whole mini cucumbers, and believe it or not, raw green beans!
Go forth and diversify your child's carb, cheese, and chicken nugget-based diet!

The 1 Thing You Forgot to Plan For Your Trip to Disney
As most moms know, these days, a trip to Disney takes some serious planning, and mama, you're all over it. You bought your park tickets, booked your flights and resort, and made your FastPass+ and dining reservations months in advance (like six for those coveted Cinderella's castle and Be Our Guest razzes), but as your trip nears, you feel like you're missing something. "This might sound stupid," said my friend, who's about to embark on her first Disney adventure with her husband and two kids, ages 4 and 6, "but I have no idea what to wear."
Since I'm now a seasoned Disney World vet, having done the Magic Kingdom in a day for two years running, I had to agree that finding the perfect outfit to wear to Disney isn't easy. You know many, many photos are going to be taken, so of course you want to look good, but every mom friend who's gone before you will warn that you're likely to walk at least 7-8 miles during your average day at the park (my husband's pedometer confirmed that we took more than 20,000 steps each day we went), which means those cute wedges or even flip flops aren't going to cut it.
If you're style-conscious, however, that oh-so pervasive shorts-and-running shoes look? Not happening either. Here's how you can balance fashion and function at Disney.
- Start with footwear. You're going to be walking a lot during your day at the park, and for once, listen to your own mother and wear appropriate shoes. Luckily, we're in the era of stylish sneakers (thank you, Gigi Hadid, who, by the way, can provide tons of inspiration for stylish sneaker looks), so pull out those All-Stars or old-school Nikes or New Balances, and you're set. I wore my handy Converse the whole day, and my feet were happy that I did.
- Think layers. If you're anything like my family, you'll be at the park from sunrise to way past sunset, so layers (and a good look at the forecast) are key. If you're visiting during a superhot day, a t-shirt or loose-fitting dress will look chic with your tennies, but bring along a light jacket for the early-morning and evening hours. If it's a bit cooler, consider cutoffs and a layered tank and long-sleeve tee or light sweater. If you're going during an abnormally cold Florida day, bring along a hat or light scarf, which can also work as a makeshift blanket for your kids.
- Ditch the shoulder bag. I love a huge shoulder bag in my normal life, but at Disney, I'm all about a small crossbody, just big enough to carry my cash, cards, phone, and lip gloss. Stash the bigger stuff (water, snacks, extra layers) in a backpack that either you or your partner can wear. The key is to keep your hands free.
- Be careful with athleisure. It might be tempting to throw on your favorite yoga pants and tank and call it a day, but if your'e going on a hot, sunny day, those black leggings are going to start feeling more stifling than comfy. Consider shorts instead, and remember this is a child's theme park, not your gym, and no one wants to see you in a sports bra.
- Don't be afraid to add a little Disney, but don't do it on site. You'll see tons of tacky Disney apparel all over the park, both in stores and on visitors, but just because they're doing it wrong, doesn't mean there's not a better way. If you really want to show off your Disney love (and really, who doesn't love Disney, at any age), do a little advance planning and track down a retro Mickey tee or some old-school ears, and skip the overpriced modern stuff sold on Magic Kingdom's Main Street.
5 De-Bloating, Skin-Clearing Spices You Need in Your Diet
Did you know that gut health is essential for not only digestion but mood, immunity, and even your skin? And if you're needing a little assistance in any of these areas, it's time to spice up your diet - literally. Holistic Nutritionist and skin-care expert, Paula Simpson, co-founder of Zea Skin Solutions, shared her favorite superfood spices that she always recommends for a healthy gut and radiant skin.
Cinnamon
"The antioxidant compounds in cinnamon help cells metabolize glucose to sustain energy and reduce cravings throughout the day," said Paula, which means cinnamon can help you with your weight-loss goals. "Cinnamon is popular due to its antimicrobial properties," which can "calm and tighten skin," as well as boost your immune system and - you guessed it - reduce bloating. In a one-two punch, the "active cinnamaldehyde [the chemical compound in cinnamon] stimulates circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the skin for natural radiance and glow, while relaxing the digestive system."
Ginger
"Ginger is best known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties," said Paula, which means it can aid in digestion, ease stomach woes, and aid in glowing, youthful skin. "Its active constituents are found in the rhizome and root and are known to offer a soothing and calming effect on the skin, while internally, ginger is great for easing the discomfort associated with bloating and stomach cramps."
Paprika
Paprika might be one of the more underrated spices. Paula suggests using it in lieu of salt when you flavor your food: "Try ditching salt to beat the bloat by subbing in paprika and other ground flavorful spices in its place." According to Paula, paprika also "incorporates key antioxidants through diet and supplementation to help keep skin youthful and radiant." This rich spice also is chock full of antioxidants, "including vitamin C, E, and carotenoids [a plant component that gives paprika its color, and also acts as an antioxidant] like zeaxanthin," she said. "Zeaxanthin fends off free radicals caused by environmental stressors, while vitamin C speeds up collagen production." And as you might know, collagen is good for more than just your skin – it promotes a healthy gut (so you can say bye bye to inflammation), and helps nourish your joints.
Turmeric
Golden milk lovers know well that turmeric contains a key antioxidant known as curcumin, which can "ease the digestive tract to keep bloating at bay," said Paula. Additionally, "within the body it helps to combat free radicals that can damage healthy skin, while promoting collagen synthesis." So not only can it help reduce the inflammation with your gut, but it'll give you a youthful glow, too. Try this golden milk recipe to combine two powerful spices for beautiful skin and a happy belly - it has the added fat and black pepper that makes turmeric bioavailable so your body can absorb all the good nutrition.
Sage
Sage has a "bitter component" that "stimulates intestinal mobility to reduce gastric distress and bloating that are often accompanied with heavy meals," Paula told POPSUGAR. It also "has been known to help improve skin circulation and renewal, making it a great seasoning for meats and side dishes."

How to Get Instagram-Worthy Hair
Yours truly, before and after my transformation with Anh Co Tran and Johnny Ramirez.
Anh Co Tran is, in a word, cool. He works with women who most of us fawn over in the media - he gave Coco Rocha, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Faith Hill pixie cuts. But he's not just a short-crop aficionado. He's styled Gone Girl's Emily Ratajkowski and even social media superstars like Arielle Vandenberg, who has over one million Vine followers. "Lately, all the women who come in for a cut show me Arielle's photo," he said. And, of course, Jessica Alba recently debuted her sexier, lighter strands, thanks to Anh and his partner Johnny Ramirez. But Anh's following isn't a result of his clients - it's his work.
The thing about Anh, though, is he might be cool, but he's not above being friendly. When you meet him, it's as if you've known him for years, like a close friend. That's probably why so many of his clients feel comfortable going so bold when their hair is in his hands. If you're in need of a major transformation, Ramirez-Tran will make you the 2.0 version of yourself.
Anh is a superstar in his own right. His Instagram has 156,000 fans, a mix of people who want to learn his technique, want their hair cut by him, or simply love gorgeous hair.
We have firsthand experience working with Anh. He predicted the bob would be the haircut of 2014 - he was right - so we filmed a segment at his salon, Ramirez-Tran, to learn the dos and don'ts of the 'do. Want to know more about the man behind the trend? Keep reading! Plus, learn the key products you need to create the look.

Everything You Need to Know Before You Get a Wedding Spray Tan
You've planned every detail of your wedding: found your something blue, mastered your makeup look, and even nailed down all of your bridesmaids' hairstyles. Type A? It's OK - it's your day. And the last thing you want is for something like a spray-tan mishap - such as a bronze formula smeared on your dream white dress - distracting you from the magic of your big day.
We know wearing white can be daunting, so you're probably going to want to get some sort of faux glow (you've been wearing plenty of SPF, right?). So we created this special spray-tan guide just for brides. Once you've brushed up on the ABCs of tanning and how to exfoliate, read on to score tips from Jessica Bringas, the self-tanning pro at Oasis Day Spa in New York City.
POPSUGAR: When is the perfect time to get your spray tan?
Jessica Bringas: I would definitely suggest doing it two days before your wedding so you will have already washed off the first layer of the tan, it will have settled into your skin, and you can add your own moisturizer. You also have the ability to see how it turned out and make sure that it's perfect. And if, god forbid, it isn't [right], you have some time to get it fixed or touched up.
PS: Is there any chance it will get on your white dress?
JB: No, because it already has sunk into your skin. Once you shower and rinse off that [extra formula] - which is just bronzer, not the actual tan itself - you'll be left with just the color on your skin.
PS: White is an extreme color to wear with a tan. How should you pick what bronze shade to do?
JB: Go by what your base color already is. So if it's in the middle of the Summer and you've been at the beach this whole time, obviously you are going to be darker than you would be during the wintertime. So then you can go a shade darker. I don't suggest doing anything more than a few shades darker than your natural skin tone, because that tends to look more artificial. You also want to choose a shade according to your features - your hair and eye color. So if you have dark hair and eyes, then you can get away with a darker tan. If you are blond with blue eyes and freckles, you want a hue that's a bit lighter.
PS: What's the best way to convey the color you want to be to the person doing your spray tan?
JB: I always try to get a good idea by mentioning a celebrity whom a lot of people know. For example, I often suggest Jennifer Lopez's bronze, because she looks amazing, but at the same time, she's not superdark or artificial-looking. She has that caramel sun-kissed color.
PS: What should you look for in a tanning salon?
JB: Choose a place that doesn't use the same shade for everyone - that's a bad sign, a really bad sign. And find out what kind of spray-tan formula they use. At Oasis Day Spa, we use SunFX, which is organic and hardly has a smell. Plus, it has a nice green undertone, which cancels out any chance of looking orange.

20 Very Important Things That Happened on The Bachelor Finale
Another season of The Bachelor has concluded! Regardless of whether you think Nick Viall made the right decision or not, there are some thoughts I'm sure we all had during that long episode. Take a trip with me, won't you? Here are all the moments we'll remember from the finale.
Here's That Big Little Lies Theme Song You Can't Get Out of Your Head
Everything about Big Little Lies is addictive, and you'll be consumed from the moment you hear the opening bars of the theme song. The tune that plays over the moody credits is called "Cold Little Heart," and it's by an artist named Michael Kiwanuka. Fans of Parenthood will be familiar with the sound (and maybe even the name), because he provided a few songs for the NBC series! Listen above; it's just one of many great songs utilized by the show.
Who Is Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay? Here's What You Need to Know
Rachel Lindsay is officially the new Bachelorette, and while we weren't happy that the announcement spoiled The Bachelor, we are thrilled that ABC has finally cast such an accomplished and engaging star - who, yes, happens to be black. While we're waiting patiently for the new season to premiere (they still have to, you know, film it), brush up on everything you need to know about Rachel.
The Basics
Rachel is a 31-year-old attorney from Dallas. According to ABC, she "enjoys jamming out to Michael Jackson and Prince, playing basketball, and watching scary movies." She has a rescue dog named Copper, and loves the Dallas Cowboys. She's close with her family and frequently shares pictures of them on Instagram. As she's mentioned on the show, her father is a judge.
Her Career
Rachel attended University of Texas at Austin before receiving her law degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee. She's been working at a firm called Cooper and Scully, P.C. (which sounds like a crossover episode of Mad Men and The X-Files) since December 2015, and though she's still listed as an employee, she now has a second full-time job being the Bachelorette. She's a rising star in the legal community, and was even put on a Ones to Watch list by the Dallas Young Lawyers Association.
Her Time on The Bachelor
Rachel and Nick Viall had an immediate connection; he gave her the First Impression Rose (making her the first black woman to receive it in the show's history) and things seemed to be going really well between them. They had a whirlwind one-on-one date in New Orleans, and Nick appeared to be more at ease with her than any of the other girls. So what went wrong? Ultimately, the connection wasn't strong enough, and Nick ended up with someone else. We do know that Nick still has a lot of respect and love for her, since he posted an Instagram praising her after the announcement that she would be the new Bachelorette. In it, he admitted that saying goodbye to Rachel was "one of the most heartbreaking moments of my life."

The Bachelorette premieres May 12!
Pentatonix's "Imagine" Cover Has an Incredibly Moving Message
Pentatonix is back with more music, and it's seriously giving us chills. In promotion of their upcoming EP, PTX VOL. IV - Classics, the a cappella group covered "Imagine" by John Lennon. Not only are their voices completely in sync, per usual, but the end of the video has an incredibly moving message. After passing around signs with cultural, ethnic, and religious labels they identify with, they turn them around to reveal the word "human." This may be one of their best covers yet.
Why Disney's "Exclusively Gay Moment" Doesn't Deliver at All
Warning: this post contains implied homosexual spoilers.
Recently, news broke that the new live-action Beauty and the Beast would feature its first openly gay character. The film's director, Bill Condon, confirmed the info in Attitude's April issue: "LeFou [Josh Gad] is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston [Luke Evans] and on another day wants to kiss Gaston . . . [it] has its payoff at the end, which I don't want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie." While the announcement led to inevitable backlash from some, others called into question this claim that LeFou would be Disney's "first" openly gay character. Let me tell you, after seeing the film, the skepticism was well placed. In fact, not only is LeFou decidedly not an openly gay Disney character, but the "exclusively gay moment" hardly earns that distinction.
Before we dive into the minutiae of the problem, let me explain how this "exclusively gay moment" goes down. The first thing the film attempts to do is establish that LeFou is attracted to men. The musical number "Gaston" does the bulk of the legwork here, giving LeFou effeminate dance moves and mannerisms. At one point, he hugs Gaston a little too tightly for a little too long and asks, "Too much?" Finally, at the end of the song, Gaston asks why LeFou hasn't been snatched up by a woman, he says, "I've been told I'm . . . clingy." Which seems like a non sequitur.
The filmmakers felt the need to introduce a second gay character, but who? After all, Gaston is an unattainable heterosexual man who would never in a million years return LeFou's obvious affection. This means his only option is another person in the town: Stanley, one of the bar patrons that LeFou mentions by name while singing. Stanley is already clearly designated as a "gay" character in the most shallow sense. He's better looking than all the other patrons, his hair is perfectly coiffed, and he's immaculately dressed, complete with a neck scarf flourish.
Hm, which one of these men could Stanley be?
To further "confirm" Stanley's sexuality, we get another moment during the epic fight scene at the end when the townspeople descend on the castle and clash with all the enchanted furniture. Madame de Garderobe, the opera singer who has transformed into a wardrobe, attacks the same three men by covering them in an avalanche of clothing, ribbon, and wigs. As a gag, the trio is suddenly glammed up in flawless makeup and full ballgowns. While two of them men are upset by the drag, Stanley is visibly thrilled, so much so that he strikes a sassy pose. Madame Garderobe encourages him to go forth and proudly be himself, in so many words. Stanley trots gleefully down the stairs and exits the castle.
So when does our "exclusively gay moment" happen? At the very end, there's a ball to celebrate the "happily ever after" of Belle and her prince. We can see LeFou has a female dance partner on the dance floor, but everyone switches and he winds up dancing with Stanley. The two look at each other, for a beat, and then we cut to another couple. That's it. Are you sensing any problems here? Allow me to make a few statements:
- Dressing well and styling your hair does not make you gay.
- Wearing women's clothes does not make you gay.
- Enjoying drag culture does not make you gay.
- Dancing with someone of the same gender at a party does not make you gay.
- Dancing with someone of the same gender at a party is not a "gay moment."
The issue is that Disney believes these are proper ways to establish sexuality and romance between characters. In reality, an individual's homosexuality is not confirmed unless they explicitly mention their romantic attraction to individuals of the same gender. Before you suggest there's no place for something like this in a Disney movie, consider how freely Gaston voices his attraction to Belle. Why doesn't LeFou ever admit he's attracted to Stanley, or vice versa? Are they even attracted to each other, or are they just shoved together because they're both gay? Why, when Gaston asks about his experience with women, doesn't he somehow suggest he's never been romantically inclined toward them? Why couldn't LeFou and Stanley peck on the lips or say something undeniably gay in their "exclusively gay moment" together?
In reality, Disney has left the moment and the characters' sexual identities buried in the subtext. And this is not groundbreaking representation for the LGBTQ community. In fact, as the internet has duly noted, there are plenty of implicitly gay characters in Disney history. Judging by how groundbreaking they thought this whole ordeal would be, though, we're quite far from a Disney character who exclaims, "I'm gay!" and kisses another same-gendered Disney character. Strap in, it's going to be quite a while before our gay "happily ever after."
