The Clothes on Big Little Lies Are Also Full of Secrets

Aside from an unbeatable soundtrack, here's one more thing the Big Little Lies HBO series has that the book doesn't: a very talented costume designer, Alix Friedberg, who's behind the wardrobe of every character on the show. Friedberg depicts so much about the women of Monterey, CA through their outfits alone. Inspired by her own life as a mother as well as the story she's helping to tell, Friedberg understands the importance of her role: "My job is to give an actor the second skin they need to become another person," she told W Magazine.

Friedberg even goes as far as to assign Madeline, Celeste, Renata, Jane, and Bonnie - played by Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, and Zoe Kravitz respectively - favorite fashion labels, proving she's got a true grasp on each lady's image. Scroll for a full breakdown, along with our own take on the clothes that bring these strong spirited women to life on screen.

Selena Gomez and Mom Mandy Show Off Their Unbreakable Bond in 1 Very Cute Way

Without Selena Gomez and her mom, Mandy Teefey, Netflix's 13 Reasons Why would not exist. The unstoppable mother-daughter pair celebrated their roles as executive producers on the teen drama at the show's LA premiere on Thursday, where they hit the red carpet in style. Selena rocked a gorgeous, glowing orange gown, while her mom stuck with classic black, and both sported a matching shade of bright blue nail polish. Cute, right? The "Only You" singer then posed for photos with lead actors Dylan Minnette and Katherine Langford before giggling in a group photo with the rest of the cast. We can't wait to see where the globe-trotting pop star shows up next!

How My Daughter Became a Rainbow Baby to Herself

After trying for years, we decided to go to a fertility specialist to help us start a family. The long and short of it is that there were lots of biological challenges, so we headed down the IVF road with the leading specialist in the country. We were lucky and our first round of treatment was textbook; two embryos were placed and we crossed our fingers.

Fast forward to testing day, and yes, I totally cheated and took a home pregnancy test the day before - and it was positive! You can imagine the relief and excitement. Then we were off to the doctor, where blood tests and a scan confirmed there was one fabulous little bun in the oven ready to cook.

Then, after constant blood tests and monitoring, another scan showed a little flickering heartbeat at six and a half weeks. There were no words to describe what it felt like to see that. At seven weeks and two days, we had our final scan appointment with our specialist before being released to the care of a midwife.

And that's when it all unraveled.

His words were clear but not what we expected. "No heartbeat, not viable, the baby has arrested, very sorry, I'll send you through to the nurse and she'll explain the options from here." Feeling numb, we listened as the nurse said we could either wait for "it" to happen naturally or they could arrange for a dilation and curettage procedure (D&C).

Driving home, through my tears, all I could think was I didn't feel different. I know they had said I had a miscarriage and they were the experts, but how could that be?

That week was full of grief, but in the back of my mind, I couldn't shake still feeling pregnant. When more blood tests came back with increasing hormone levels, I questioned the nurses, but they said, "Sometimes that happens." I must have seemed like a complete lunatic; I questioned the nurses at every turn, and my best friend, family, and husband (while amazing and supportive) were all starting to wonder if I was completely losing the plot.

I just couldn't believe the diagnosis; either I was in denial or going crazy. I swung between grief and disbelief.

In the insanity of that week, I was referred to the miscarriage clinic at our public hospital. I had asked for another scan, but the specialist was resolute and we were now in the "public" system. I'll never forget reading the words on his referral letter requesting an "immediate evacuation of the uterus" because I wasn't "coping."

There I was at the clinic being given the same options: wait it out or schedule a D&C. But I needed them to check. I needed to know I was doing the right thing, so I asked for a scan. Reluctantly and with a "well, if that's what you need to feel comfortable, we can arrange that," the clinic doctor agreed.

I headed back to the public hospital the next day for the ultrasound. I remember saying, "I think we're probably just confirming the inevitable but I need to check," as I handed over the referral documents.

She started scanning. A couple of minutes later she stopped, cocked her head a little, leaned into the screen, scanned more, looked closer, and then turned to me and said: "I don't know what he was looking at, but what I see here is a perfectly viable baby with a good heartbeat. And it appears to be measuring ahead of expected."

I felt my heart drop. WHAT? She reread my notes and asked if I would wait for a moment while she went to get her boss. While she was out of the room, I rang my husband. I could hear his jaw hit the floor. No sooner had I hung up than the head of the department came in. They scanned again and got the same result. At that point I'm not sure who looked more shocked or happier, them or me. "Well, I don't know how this happened, but you are definitely pregnant. We'll be sending the doctor a report, but would you like to ring and tell him, or would you like us to?"

Calling the fertility clinic that afternoon was awesome, and yes they were as shocked as everyone else. It was nice for me to know that after being treated like I was crazy, I was actually right.

I met again with the doctor who had misdiagnosed my miscarriage, and he asked if he could do a scan too so that he could see, but of course I said no. I didn't trust him anymore. He apologized and said he wasn't sure how it happened. He suggested maybe there were two and he just hadn't seen the other one. I really didn't want to hear his excuses. He had made a terrible, terrible mistake, one that would have killed my child if I had gone along as he recommended and had that D&C.

What I found out through this process is that when you are diagnosed with a miscarriage and booked for a D&C, no further scanning is done before the operation. They simply take the report as correct and proceed. If I hadn't insisted on another scan, my beautiful little girl wouldn't be here. Sure, I'd be none the wiser, but knowing what happened and how close we were to losing her is something I can never forget or forgive.

I'd love to say that the pregnancy was problem free, and medically it was, but having already "lost" her once made it an emotional horror story. I was completely paranoid every single day. From renting a fetal doppler to employing an expensive obstetrician and insisting on regular scans, I just couldn't relax and enjoy it. I'm probably one of the only mothers who has been relieved to have a breech baby and an early C-section, but honestly I just wanted to have her out alive. I couldn't stand the thought that something might still go wrong.

I guess this is what it's like for most women who are pregnant after loss; pregnant with rainbow babies. The only difference is that mine was essentially a rainbow baby to herself.

I know that most of the time a miscarriage is just that and my situation is rare, but if you find yourself in this terrible, heartbreaking situation, don't rush into a decision. Please always get a second opinion, and trust yourself.

This Woman's Makeup Looks Date-Night Ready, but She's Actually in Labor

While we've heard of some women getting delivery-room blowouts and prelabor lash extensions, we've never seen someone give birth looking as glam as Instagram user makeupbyalaha. The New York-based makeup artist shared images of herself propped up in a hospital bed surrounded by palettes as she applied a full face of product . . . despite contractions.

"I was pausing during contractions and picking up where I left off once the contractions passed," she explained to her followers. She even revealed which of her favorite makeup items made the cut into her hospital bag. You'll notice that there are at least 15 brushes, a 35-pan shadow palette, contouring products, Beautyblenders, and more.

While not all moms would go this far with their prebaby beauty routine, we have to applaud Alaha's dedication to her craft - and her ability to create such a gorgeous makeup masterpiece while in pain! Read on to see all the photos.

John Cena Meets His Biggest, Cutest Fan: a 12-Year-Old Boy With Cerebral Palsy

John Cena might have muscles for miles, but the pro-wrestler is actually a big teddy bear at heart. At a recent wrestling match, the Trainwreck actor continued his reign of being one of earth's most lovable humans by making the night of a young superfan with Cerebral Palsy. Payton Marion, 12, traveled to meet John - who currently holds the title for the most wishes granted by a celebrity for the Make-a-Wish Foundation - with his devoted dad, Justin, who told E! News that Payton is obsessed with John because "he always seemed to be the winner." (Same, Payton.) Justin was actually the reason why Payton fell in love with the sport to begin with, since he wanted to share an interest with his son. "Payton and I have always been very competitive. We would wrestle each other at home and Payton just had to win," he continued. "It started a few years ago when he got too old for cartoons. I introduced him to what I used to watch at his age."

Not only does Payton just enjoy watching John do his thing on TV, but the wrestler plays a major part in the pre-teen's physical therapy, since Justin plays videos of John's moves to inspire his son to exercise his arms. When the WWE's tour was on its way to Tennessee, Justin made it his mission to have Payton meet his hero, and started a GoFundMe page to raise enough money to pay for VIP tickets. They received enough donations within two days to go, and as you can see in the video above, Payton loved every minute. "The fact that I could make one of his dreams come true and not let him down was amazing," Justin said. "I literally felt like Superdad." Superdad is probably an understatement.

47 Trends Every '80s and '90s Girl Remembers

Between listening to new wave and boy bands and staring at our posters of Rob Lowe, Leonardo DiCaprio, and JTT, we somehow managed to style ourselves up in acid-washed jeans, biker shorts, jellies, and other semihorrific pieces way back when. Even though we shudder to think of some of the things we wore, many of those styles have come back with a vengeance (chokers and slip dresses are everywhere, and we all remember where we were the day American Apparel started selling scrunchies). Since there's nothing we love more than a fashion flashback, we've rounded up 47 of the biggest and best trends to come out of the '80s and '90s. Look through now to relive your fashion past.

The Immigrant-Led Clothing Brand You've Been Seeing All Over Instagram

Kids of Immigrants recently emerged as a celebrity-approved clothing brand. However, the story behind the brand is what has people talking. Following Donald Trump's election, Daniel Buezo and Weleh Dennis launched the brand as a medium for channeling their fears and frustrations into something creative. Now, the first-generation Americans from Honduras and Liberia, respectively, have amassed a notable following and plenty of celebrity clientele.

On the official website, the brand story states, "Kids of Immigrants is a movement to recognize that we are all cut from different fabrics but together make a whole," adding, "With their individual style and experiences, Buezo and Dennis aspire to showcase their culture by creating. Culture instilled by ingenuity and the will to make something out of nothing."

From a fashion perspective, Kids of Immigrants offers unique hoodies, sweaters, and perfectly worn-in t-shirts with prices ranging from $25 to $135. Many of the designs feature empowering slogans and words like "support your friends," "spread love," and "immigrants love." As of late, celebrities like Kehlani and Big Sean have supported the timely and socially conscious brand. Look ahead for pictures and more insight into Kids of Immigrants.

You Won't Believe What Wacky Product Huda Beauty Is Launching This April

Entrepreneur and influencer Huda Kattan is one of the savviest brand founders out there. She is ahead of the curve, because she sees voids in the beauty industry and makes products designed to fill those needs. Case in point: her upcoming launch.

After developing her bestselling Rose Gold shadow palette, Huda explained that the best way to apply certain shades was to press pigment into the lids with a fingertip. She soon received loads of complaints from fans, citing that this method was too messsy or difficult for those with long nails. That's why she decided to invent the Fender, a.k.a. the Finger Blender.

The applicator (which uses "finger technology") looks just like a finger on a handle. It even has a trendy (but short!) chrome nail to add a little flair to the Fender. Huda demonstrates above how easily it picks up pigment and lays it down for spectacular shimmer and dimension. "I really think this is going to be the next big thing," she says.

According to Huda, she will be rolling out Fenders in different sizes, but the initial launch will be on April 1. (An interesting choice of dates, don't you think?) Watch the video above and see what you think.

The Obama Girls Have Grown Up Before Our Eyes

Barack and Michelle Obama's little girls, Malia and Sasha, aren't so little anymore! As the nation's most public mom when she was First Lady, Michelle always tried to connect with other Americans raising their kids. Malia was just 10 when Barack was elected, and Sasha was 7. "My life is no different from any other working mother. Mine is just more public," the beloved First Lady Michelle Obama told us back in 2012, adding, "Some of us have more resources than others, but the pain, the challenges, the fears of motherhood, the frustrations of being a woman, the hopes and dreams that you have for your daughters, and all our daughters are the same." Let's take a look at the Obama girls' family photo album.

The Surprising Way Queen Elizabeth II Is Related to Husband Prince Philip

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's nearly 69-year marriage has been the subject of such speculation that their early days as a couple have been turned into a new Netflix series, The Crown. Although most people know the basics about how the royal couple fell in love, there's a surprising, little-known tidbit that we sometimes forget: Queen Elizabeth and the duke of Edinburgh are cousins. They share the same great-great-grandparents, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who were first cousins themselves. Although that might seem odd today, it was a fairly common practice for the royals back then since many marriages were done to increase influence in state affairs or to ally with foreign powers. Regardless of their familial relation, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's love story is one for the ages.

When Elizabeth's father, King George VI, visited a Naval college in Dartmouth in 1939, he brought his 13-year-old daughter along to take in the sights. While the King attended to business, a cadet named Philip Mountbatten - Elizabeth's third cousin and a Greek prince - was given the task of showing the future queen around. He must have made quite the impression, because Elizabeth was instantly enamored. In a two-page letter sent to author Betty Shew, who was writing a book about Elizabeth's wedding to Philip in 1947, the then-princess described how she first fell in love with Philip:

"The first time I remember meeting Philip was at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, in July 1939, just before the war. (We may have met before at the coronation or the Duchess of Kent's wedding, but I don't remember.) I was 13 years of age and he was 18 and a cadet just due to leave. He joined the Navy at the outbreak of war, and I only saw him very occasionally when he was on leave - I suppose about twice in three years. Then when his uncle and aunt, Lord and Lady Mountbatten, were away he spent various weekends away with us at Windsor. Then he went to the Pacific and Far East for two years."

The couple got married on Nov. 20, 1947, and the rest is history.

8 Savvy Ways to Update Your Wardrobe Without Spending Tons of Money

The following post was originally featured on Nany's Klozet and written by Daniela Ramirez, who is part of POPSUGAR Select Latina.

The best way to start the new year is with a "new" closet. When you clean your closet, you also get rid of old (and bad) energy, and you will feel a big difference. Having an organized closet will help you find your favorite pieces quicker and make getting dressed each morning easier.

Do a Closet Clean-Out

Start by going through everything in your closet and get ready to have five piles: keep, fix, donate, throw away, and sell.

What should you keep?

Ask yourself, have I worn this in the past year? If the answer is no, you are probably not going to wear it ever again. Here's a fun trick to know if you have worn something in the past year: put your hangers backwards every time you do a clean-out. When you wear something, put it back as it should be hung normally. At the end of the year, you can clearly see what you haven't worn in a while.

Then think, why haven't I worn it? Is it damaged? Does it not fit anymore?

If it has a little hole or anything that can be fixable, put it in the fix pile. If not, throw it away. If the items are in good condition but have no significant value, donate them. If you think you can get a little money, sell them!

Forget about sentimental value (unless it's a piece of jewelry your grandmother gave you, of course). This includes that old prom dress you know you are never going to wear again or that cute dress you wore to your first date 10 years ago. Getting rid of them won't delete that amazing memory.

Remember to do a clean-out with your beauty bag, too - makeup has an expiration date, and anything older than a year should be thrown out. Wearing expired makeup can cause breakouts and allergic reactions.

Host a Wardrobe Exchange

Let's say you organized your closet and you realized you have a ton of clothes in mint condition that you never wear. What should you do? Host a wardrobe exchange with your friends.

How?

  • Invite a group of close friends and encourage them to invite people as well. You want to keep the group relatively small, but it's a great way to meet and bond with friends.
  • Tell them to bring X amount of items. Just be clear about the fact that the pieces must be in perfect condition - clean, no holes, or stains. I recommend bringing a minimum of five pieces.
  • Make it fun with appetizers and champagne.
  • As soon as the people start arriving, group items by type - dresses, shirts, accessories, etc..
  • If you came in with five pieces, you can take five pieces home with you.

The more pieces they bring, the more variety! It's the perfect way to have "new" clothes without spending a dime!

Raid Your Mom's, Sister's, or Aunt's Closet

If you still live with your family, this is easier. However, you can even ask your crazy aunt if you can check out her clothes from the '80s and '90s - I'm sure you can find some amazing things hidden in the bottom of her closet. I did this once with my aunt and she was super excited to see me wearing something from 20 years ago. Also, think outside the box: it doesn't have to be a woman's closet, dare to borrow your dad's shirt or even your boyfriend's jeans.

Find a Tailor You Trust

If you have jeans you used to love but you truly kept that New Year's Resolution to lose weight, and they are too big now; if you want to transform a midi sequin dress into a mini dress, a tailor is your BFF.

Find someone in your city that you trust for all the wardrobe basics, including hemming your pants and making that sexy dress fit like a glove. Then you can ask him/her for a discount when you bring that big ole fix pile. They can transform that dress with the cute print but unflattering neckline.

Shop at Vintage/Thrift Stores

A lot of people underestimate the power of buying in thrift shops or vintage stores. First of all, everything comes back in style. Second, I love thinking that the pieces have a story, that they were carried around when the world was a different place. (Well, that might be just me. I'm a little crazy!) Third, there's a big chance nobody else will own it - vintage pieces are very unique.

I've found amazing items on vintage stores. I found a pair of D&G shoes for $20, a small vintage Coach bag for $15, and silk blouses for $5.

A couple of tips:

  • Wash everything as soon as you get home (no bedbugs, please!).
  • Go with comfy shoes, because finding those hidden gems isn't that easy. You really have to go through piles and piles of clothes, but it is worth it.

DIY

This is the best way to update your current pieces. I often see clothes on the runway that I think might be fun to DIY. And the best part? Saying you did it yourself when people ask you, where did you get that?

Sell, Sell, Sell

Why not make a little profit from cleaning out your closet? If you have pieces in perfect condition that are valuable, put them up for sale.

Some options:

  • Local consignment stores: I personally don't like this option, but if you want to get rid of a lot of things quick, this is a good way to do it. They are going to offer you very little money and they are very picky. I went to one called "Plato's Closet," and they rejected more than half of the things I brought and only offered me $50 for a lot of things
  • eBay
  • Poshmark: This is my favorite app to sell clothes. It is very easy to use and you can make great money from it. Sign up using the code "HPFVV," and you will get $10 to shop.

Every month I challenge myself, and I try to sell more. The goal: only spend what I have sold.

When Going Shopping, Think "CPU" - Cost Per Use

Last resort . . . go shopping. You deserve it after cleaning, selling, swapping, and raiding.

Never go shopping without knowing what you are looking for, this leads to impulse buying (and most impulse buys end up with their tags on at the end of the closet).

Along the way, maybe you realized you needed a white blouse or a leopard scarf. So write them down. Make a list of the things you really need, and the ones you really want. We all deserve a little treat now and then.

No matter what you buy, always think CPU (cost per use): the cost of the item divided by the amount of times you will use it.

For example, let's say you find a classic LBD at Forever 21 for $30, and you only wear it twice because the fabric lost its stretch when you washed it. The CPU of the affordable dress is $15.

An even better option would be:

You save up a little more and buy an identical classic LBD for $150 that will last 5 years. Let's say you wear it five times per year (and that's nothing because you can even wear an LBD with a denim jacket for a BBQ). The CPU of this dress is $6.

Also, I have a rule that I never buy anything unless I can think of three ways I can wear it. It's all about versatile pieces you can have fun with.

Mom Films the "Horrifying" Way TSA Agents Treated Her Boy With Disabilities

We have been through hell this morning. They detained Aaron for well over an hour at DFW. (And deliberately kept us from our flight... we are now on an alternate) We were treated like dogs because I requested they attempt to screen him in other ways per TSA rules. He has SPD and I didn't want my child given a pat down like this. Let me make something else crystal clear. He set off NO alarms. He physically did not alarm at all during screening, he passed through the detector just fine. He is still several hours later saying "I don't know what I did. What did I do?" I am livid. Please, share... make this viral like the other children's videos with TSA... I wish I had taped the entire interchange because it was horrifying. We had two DFW police officers that were called and flanking him on each side. Somehow these power tripping TSA agents who are traumatizing children and doing whatever they feel like without any cause, need to be reined in.

Posted by Jennifer Williamson on Sunday, March 26, 2017

After a mom says that her son with disabilities was detained at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport for "well over an hour," she's speaking out against the TSA agents and the "unnecessary" treatment of her kid.

According to Jennifer Williamson, her son didn't set off metal detectors, but security officials still wanted to perform a pat-down on him. When she explained that her child has sensory processing disorder, which makes being touched by strangers very distressing, they still carried on the "traumatizing" search.

Jennifer recorded the incident and the video has since gone viral on Facebook. The enraged mom wrote that she felt like the TSA purposefully made them miss their flight because she spoke up on behalf of her son. "We were treated like dogs because I requested they attempt to screen him in other ways per TSA rules," she wrote on Facebook. "He has SPD and I didn't want my child given a pat down like this."

According to Jennifer, the exchange carried on well after she stopped filming. "We had two DFW police officers that were called and flanking him on each side," she wrote. "He is still several hours later saying, 'I don't know what I did. What did I do?' I am livid."

According to the TSA, Aaron and his mom were at the checkpoint for about 45 minutes and the pat-down took approximately two minutes. The agency also said in a prepared statement that the additional agents were brought in to ease Jennifer's concerns. "The video shows a male TSA officer explaining the procedure to the passenger, who fully cooperates," the agency said in a statement to Dallas News. "Afterward, the TSA officer was instructed by his supervisor, who was observing, to complete the final step of the screening process."

23 GIFs of Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki That Will Make You Supernaturally Happy

Bromances in Hollywood are a beautiful thing. While some are more unexpected (hello, Ryan Gosling and Jon Hamm), others have remained constant throughout the ever-changing tide of show business. If you didn't already guess, we're talking about Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. It all began way back in the year 2005 when their show, Supernatural, first premiered. And in the almost 12 years since then, the two have managed to build a bond (and fan base) most people can only wish for. Whether they're goofing off on set or just hanging out in real life, they always manage to have a good time. George Clooney Admits He "Chased" Amal For "Many Months" After They First Met

George Clooney was once one of Hollywood's hottest bachelors, who swore he would never get married again (he was married to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993). That is, until Amal Alamuddin (now Amal Clooney) came along. George first laid eyes on the human rights attorney at his home in Lake Como, Italy, in 2013. During a previous appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, the 55-year-old actor revealed, "We met in Lake Como. She was a friend of a friend who came to visit and then I chased her for many months, calling and writing, those kinds of things." George also admitted to Ellen DeGeneres that "from the minute we met, we just sort of felt like we were going to be together."

He ended up proposing six months later, and even though he had it all planned out, it ended up being "one of those horrible moments," he told Ellen. "I plotted the whole thing out. I had the ring hidden behind her. I had music playing, my Aunt Rosemary's gonna sing 'Why Shouldn't I.' Everything was planned out . . . it was like 25 minutes. Finally I literally said, 'Look, I hope the answer's yes, but I need an answer 'cause I'm 52 and I could throw out my hip pretty soon.' And she said 'Oh, yes,' and it worked out really well."

Fast-forward a few months later and George and Amal are husband and wife. The couple tied the knot in Venice, Italy, in September 2014, and have been looking crazy in love ever since. They're also currently expecting twins (a boy and a girl)! Maybe fairy tales do exist.

8 Toxic Ingredients You Should Never Use in Your Skin Care Routine

Last month, I had the opportunity to visit Tata Harper's farm in Vermont, and it blew my mind. It should not have been so shocking. I've been a fan of her natural-ingredient, eco-friendly skin care and makeup line for years. It's ideal for my sensitive skin, and everything smells deliciously botanical with milky, silky textures. But actually seeing the farm-to-vanity process of these products made me realize: they are the real deal.

These are not products that claim to have organic ingredients but are still packed with "processed" stuff. In fact, most Tata Harper formulas have the shelf life of just a few months. She pointed out: why would you want to put something on your face with enough preservatives to make it last for years? Gross. (I immediately went home after the trip and threw away a ton of expired formulas.)

"I started Tata Harper Skincare after my stepfather was diagnosed with cancer," she told me via email. "Through all of the doctor's appointments I learned so much about lifestyle and how little decisions affect health and wellbeing. That's when I started really researching ingredients, and discovered that a lot of the ingredients with the most potential health risks aren't even there to give results; they're just fillers like preservatives, emulsifiers, stabilizers, and thickeners designed to keep the formula stable and give the product its texture. I only use natural ingredients because I believe that no woman should have to compromise her health for her beauty, especially if those ingredients aren't even making her beautiful!"

The more I learned about natural ingredients, the more I only wanted to use them. Every time I wash my face with Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser, I envision the apricot seed powder exfoliating my skin and the French pink clay detoxifying it. Or when I nourish my face with the Rejuvenating Serum, I know rosehip seed oil is rejuvenating my under-eye area, while Spanish lavender extract is relaxing fine lines.

If you are eager to get informed about the harmful ingredients in your skin care products, as well as natural ones to look for instead, keep reading. Tata Harper herself breaks down what to ditch, what to use, and why.
