Dry Lips? Slather These Products on For the Smoothest Lips of Your Life
If you haven't caught on just yet, the lips are probably the most serviced area when it comes to beauty launches these days. I remember a time when an influx of mascaras, texturizing sprays, and BB creams was the norm. In the past two years, it seems, the industry experts are smartly doubling down on lips. Who can blame them? According to Google Trends, the term "lip injections" is currently at peak popularity in April 2017, gaining steam from 2016 and doubling in search since April 2015 - around the time Kylie Jenner announced she was augmenting her lips. The interest in liquid lipstick has also remained constant since this time last year.
That said, lip products are seemingly becoming redundant. Another day, another liquid lipstick. Lately, it's been all about hologram lip toppers. That's why I've been surprised by three innovative products that recently made their way to my desk: a clay mask, a peel, and a silicone brush duo made specifically to prep and pamper your lips ahead of lining, contouring, and applying lipstick.
Check out these new launches and let me know which one you'd pick up in the comments.
Target Is Empowering Breastfeeding Moms With Public Feeding Stations
As if moms didn't already love Target, this chain is giving women another reason to be obsessed with their stores. To the delight of many shoppers, some Targets have rolled out a "nursing nook" or "feeding station" for moms to be able to nourish their little ones in comfort.
These thoughtful areas aren't set up in a private room or dark corner meant to hide moms. Instead, they are normalizing the concept of moms feeding their babies by keeping the area in public. Along with cozy chairs and pillows, the designated space has Boppy pillows, breastfeeding covers, and free breast pads.
Kristy Welker, a representative for Target, told Scary Mommy that the company is testing these nursing areas in a few stores but it does not currently have plans to expand the concept to all locations.
"In late 2016, we began testing designated nursing rooms at two stores in Minnesota. We will continue to evaluate guest feedback on this test to determine broader rollout to additional stores and we always appreciate hearing from our guests about how we can better meet their needs," Welker said. "Fitting rooms are available for women who wish to breastfeed their babies privately, even if others are waiting to use the fitting rooms. Guests who choose to breastfeed in public areas of the store are welcome to do so without being made to feel uncomfortable. Additionally, store leaders are empowered to make decisions that help meet the needs of the guests they serve."

You Need to See These Photos If Your Child Sits in a Car Seat
An awful car crash in Tacoma, WA, could have ended in serious tragedy last week, but due to proper car seat installation, two children - and their mom - are doing so much better than the photos suggest.
Kylee Barrett was taking her 5-year-old son, Kolton, to school one morning with her 2-year-old, Hunter, also in tow when the car hit a patch of black ice. As the car slid, Barrett swerved to avoid hitting another car head-on, which forced them into a tree that crushed Hunter's side of the car. The impact caused the seat to bend but absorb the force, which kept Hunter safe even though the car flipped upside down.
Had Hunter's rear-facing Safety 1st seat not been properly installed, this family could be dealing with much more than a totaled car, Hunter's broken left femur, and a few bruises and scrapes. Facebook user Heather Viers is using the photo of Hunter's crushed seat to spread the word about proper car seat use: "This specific seat retails for $100. It's NOT a 'nice' seat, but it further illustrates the point that you don't have to spend a fortune to keep your child safe. Get your car seats checked by a CPST. Use it properly every.single.time. The life of your child relies on it."
Barrett has started a GoFundMe page to help with some of the costs that insurance isn't covering but is mostly focused on sharing her story to inform other parents. She says even though she's sore and bruised, her kids are still here to drive her crazy, and she "couldn't be happier."
If you own a car and a car seat, you need to read through and see these photos for yourself.

By Far the Best and Fastest Way to Hard-Boil Eggs
I'm a new Instant Pot user and have avoided cooking eggs for months out of fear they would explode (I've seen some gnarly photos on the Instant Pot Facebook Community). When I searched online for "How to cook eggs in an Instant Pot," I was met with disaster photos and inconsistent instructions from various bloggers. I searched for "eggs" on the Instant Pot website and saw an old video (with an old Instant Pot) that gave some strange instructions, too. My boyfriend said, "Well, why don't you just try the egg setting and see what happens?" Duh! While it's almost that easy to "hard-boil" perfect eggs, there are a few tips and tricks I tried that I wanted to share with you so your eggs turn out well, too. So here's the method I used, step by step.

Amal Clooney's Biggest Style Secret Is Decades Old
Aside from Amal Clooney's natural ability to put together an outfit, she's got another thing going for her: a vintage wardrobe. Because somehow - when the human rights activist and lawyer is not working to better our world and defend high-profile clients - she finds time to thrift shop. Sure, she's got some go-to contemporary labels, including Altuzarra, Giambattista Valli, and Gucci, but Amal's also got an eye for one-of-a-kind pieces.
She secures a handful of them from William Vintage and styles them with seasonal It bags, power pumps, and dark sunglasses. If we had to guess, we'd say Amal's goal isn't to mix high and low but to mix the new with the old. The outcome is a signature look that lands Amal on best dressed lists but also serves up inspiration for business women on the go. Scroll to find Amal's most memorable vintage ensembles yet.

Breaking Down Melania Trump's Official Portrait Outfit, Sparkly Neck Tie and All
There are many style differences between Melania Trump and former First Lady Michelle Obama, but Melania makes that no more clear than in her her first official portrait, which was just released by the White House along with the following statement: "I am honored to serve in the role of First Lady, and look forward to working on behalf of the American people over the coming years."
While some Twitter commenters are calling out her 13-carat engagement ring, we are more focused on the detailing of her Dolce & Gabbana blazer. Melania nixed classic jewelry - Michelle Obama famously wore strands of pearls for both her portraits - for an embellished neck tie covered in sequins. The style update is notable and frankly pretty unmissable though Melania's outfit is black. (No one ignored the sleeveless silhouette of Michelle's LBD in 2009 either.)
Despite past scrutiny about first lady fashion choices, many people are noting that Nancy Reagan wore a pussy bow blouse in her signature red in 1981, a silhouette that Melania seems to favor that can even be considered modest. At the end of the day, Melania's neckerchief offers a glittering wink to remind us of her ties to the fashion industry. After all, it's certainly garnering plenty of comments (both positive and negative) on Stefano Gabbana's Instagram tribute, thanking Melania for choosing one of his looks.

The 1 Thing You Need to Remember When Parenting Starts to Suck
Ever feel guilty because the "joys of parenting" sometimes seem anything but joyful? Our friends over at YourTango are sharing the one thing you need to remember when parenting starts to, for lack of a better word, suck.
Put parental disappointment in perspective.
Is this taboo? Can I talk about when this joyous thing called parenting is disappointing?
Whether you have a newborn who is screaming all night or a 40-year-old adult child living downstairs, there comes a point (well, many of them maybe) when a parent thinks, "Wait ... this sucks! I hate parenting."
Before you get offended, let me acknowledge that talking about the not-so-great parts of parenting does not in any way negate the amazing, heartwarming, life changing miracle that parenting is. Parenting really is a miracle. But, sometimes, it's also truly disappointing.
Often parents take on way too much guilt which, of course, only further impedes our good parenting moments. We are never off the hook as parents but that doesn't mean we are destined to a life of guilt, guilt, and guilt.
So, let's be real. Mom to mom. When you're having those super-bad days and you want to know where you can go throw in the towel, stop, take a deep, slow breath and try to find one thing that is good right now about your kid at this moment.
It's there. I promise you.
Often, when we feel disappointed, it's not our kids we are disappointed in, but ourselves.
When they do the crazy things that they sometimes do, it reflects on us and we are disappointed in our perceived failure to transform this ball of potential into a fully functioning productive member of society.
We're scared. Sometimes I actually tell my teenage son, "I'm not disappointed in you. You are awesome. I'm disappointed in me." (Don't try this with a toddler. It won't work.)
The good news is that you don't have to be perfect. Good enough parents create amazing adults! I envision parenting as creating a net. A fully functioning net is comprised of what? Holes.
Even the best parents inadvertently create some emotional holes in our children because we're only human. Those holes give our children the opportunity to build strength, which is a necessary quality in a functioning adult.
A net without holes is not functional. What that means is that there is grace for our mistakes. We all make them and we will learn and our children will grow from them.
We lose the joy of relationships with our children when we are so focused on the end result.
The next time you're disappointed, try letting go of your idea of the finished product and focus on the beauty that's right in front of you. Focus on your relationship and the rest will take care of itself.

After People Trolled His Makeup Fail, James Charles Clapped Back in the Most Hilarious Way
Known for his impressively flawless highlight and killer brow game, James Charles is definitely one of our go-to vloggers when we're in need of some refreshing makeup inspiration. But the CoverBoy star recently proved that even the experts have off days, and he's taking it in stride like the true champ he is.
At an event in early March, James stopped to snap a few photos with fans and shared one of them on his Twitter. It looks like the camera's flash made his face look a tad pasty compared to the rest of his body - a common issue we're all secretly prone to.
my face is WAY too light bc of flashback lol there's no denying that but it was actually a filtered photo, here's the original casper pic 😕 http://pic.twitter.com/V5uIL23HYt
- FLASHBACK MARY (@jamescharles) March 5, 2017
Naturally, trolls from the dregs of the internet employed the power of Photoshop to exaggerate James's ghostly face makeup, and the memes started rolling in.
@jamescharles thanks to you, I'm no longer afraid of death and believe in becoming a ghost in the afterlife 💕 http://pic.twitter.com/dvhl5VraUG

A whole month later, people are still somehow not over the whole thing, as memes are still being made. Although James admitted that he was initially pretty upset about them, he's now starting to acknowledge them on social media and finding humor in the whole situation.
best one yet http://pic.twitter.com/hBmjlswFN3

And he even used it as fuel to make a hilarious new video tutorial mocking the haters. We couldn't think of a better way to handle a makeup fail! Ahead, see some of the most chuckle-inducing memes to date, followed by James's epic video response to the shade-throwers.

The Pretty Little Lairs stunned in a beautiful white Cortana gown, a headpiece by Amaroq, and a veil, while the Suits actor wore a navy blue three-piece Ralph Lauren suit. The longtime couple exchanged "I dos" in front of 200 of their closest friends and family, including Troian's costars Ashley Benson, Lucy Hale, Ian Harding, Keegan Allen, and Sasha Pieterse. Troian then slipped into a dazzling gold gown, which went perfectly with the fun atmosphere of the night.

Along with a photo from Troian's bachelorette trip, Shay wrote, "To my big sister T on her wedding day. I love that we were able to close one very important chapter of our lives together and I am devastated not to be there as you embark on your next one. As I sit here thinking about our friendship and journey I am reminded of how much I love, cherish and admire you. 7 Shopping Secrets Straight From an Aldi Employee
Aldi grocery stores may be famous for their exceptionally low price points, but we're finding out that there's a lot more to the company than just a solid deal on bananas! One employee just revealed tons of secrets about the grocery store and what it's like to work at Aldi in a Reddit AMA, and we're truly intrigued. During the "Ask Me Anything" conversation, the employee spilled the details on how "fresh" the produce is, why the cashiers are always sitting, and those delicious knockoff Girl Scout Cookies. Read on for all of the juicy Aldi shopping secrets, straight from an employee.
There's a weekly deal called Special Buys.
One Irish Reddit user wondered if they featured a weekly special product like they do at the stores in Ireland, which is often a really random product, like "skiing gear or a chainsaw," and the employee said yes. "It's called Special Buys," they shared about the weekly deals. "We just got a bunch of gardening things in yesterday!" So good to know!
They have amazing coffee!
The employee shared that coffee is their favorite thing to buy at Aldi. "We have amazing coffee," they shared. "My favorite is the Honduras and Peru whole bean (single source, organic, and fair trade) and the regular fair trade medium roast. The chocolate (choceur) is better than almost any common brand you can find. Almost everything there is truly comparable to national brands. It's not just a line. There is a very short list of things I don't like." They also sell great K-Cups for Keurig users.
Why do the cashiers always sit?
One curious Reddit user asked why the cashiers are always sitting, and it has absolutely nothing to do with laziness. "The register chairs are a German thing. I'm not 100% sure why. But I like to think we sit because we bust our asses cleaning and stocking when we aren't ringing."
The knockoff Girl Scout Cookies are delicious.
Someone asked why the near-identical Girl Scout Cookies weren't available in all stores, and the employee shared their incredibly impressive self-control when it comes to the cookies. "They are pretty amazing," the employee said about the cookies. "I don't allow myself to buy them often, though. I'll eat the whole thing by myself in like a day or two."
No, you can't get a discount on squished boxes.
Apparently, it's a running joke between shoppers that no one can ever find baking soda in Aldi stores, but we have an answer! "Baking aisle, top shelf," the employee shared, revealing a tip that might be a letdown to some customers. "No, you can't get a discount on the squished boxes."
Hiring is very competitive.
Yup! When someone asked if their experience at Walmart would help in the application process at Aldi, the employee said yes and opened up about the great number of applicants. "A lot of district managers like to hire people with former management experience (that's part of why I got hired)," they shared. "All experience matters of course, so grocery experience is definitely on your side. My store (not in a very large city) receives several hundred applications a year. Two people were hired in my store in the last 12 months. . . I was one of them. It's a tough job. Everyone does everything, including 6am truck shifts. Keeping the store clean and stocked is a constant struggle when it gets as busy as it does, and when there are only 2-3 working at a time. . . well, you can imagine. That's why it's nice to sit while we ring."
Produce is exceptionally fresh.
With such low prices, many shoppers wonder how "fresh" the produce really is, and the employee reassured the curious Reddit users that even though the produce is less expensive than other grocery stores, it's great quality. "We get produce deliveries every morning," they shared. "The turn around is very fast, so we don't have much waste. We just don't over-order, I guess. It's more typical that we are all out of broccoli by the time we close than it is that we have several extra cases that just end up in the trash." At this employee's location, local restaurant employees will even come in to purchase produce. "We often have local restaurants come in to buy produce to hold them over until deliveries come in. They have mentioned that it's cheaper than their wholesalers. I don't have actual numbers, but bananas and lettuce are big sellers in that area."
But if you're still wondering why shoppers are required to purchase a cart for a quarter, check out more Aldi secrets from another candid employee.

Little Girl Teaches Her Classmates an Important Lesson on Crazy Hair Day
When Daniella Wride was brushing her little girl's hair after a bath, she noticed something startling: an alarming amount of Gianessa's hair was falling out.
The very next day, the concerned family received a tentative diagnosis for the little girl's hair loss, and three weeks later it was confirmed that she has alopecia, an autoimmune disease that can be triggered by stress. Just 19 days after Gianessa's parents first noticed a problem, the child had officially lost all of her hair. "There are times that I think I take it harder than she does," Daniella told POPSUGAR. "You think things like: I hope someone just sees her for who she is - her beautiful, sassy, smart, loving, kind self - not just the girl without any hair."
Daniella is helping her daughter embrace her "new fabulous look" while also hoping her little one feel like she fits in. "I truly don't care if she has hair or not. But it's the experiences I don't want her to miss out on: crazy hair day, getting ready for dates, dances with friends and doing each other's hair," she said. "This girl is fierce and brave, way more so than I could have ever imagined."
As Crazy Hair Day approached at school, Daniella turned to her daughter's friends for inspiration on what to do for this potentially difficult event. They suggested temporary tattoos or body glitter, but when Daniella came across jewel stickers in the scrapbook section of her craft store, she knew that they were the perfect option for her artistic daughter.
After Gianessa created the design she wanted, her mom applied the jewels to her head. "She said she was really nervous no one would like it and when I finished, she ran to the bathroom to look at it," Daniella recalled. "She got a massive grin on her face and she said, 'I look so awesome!'"
When Daniella dropped her girl off for school, she could hear people enthusiastically complimenting her spirited look. When she picked her up at the end of the day, not only were all of the jewels still in place, but she also learned that Gianessa's teacher chose her daughter for the best crazy hair in class. "She said, 'All the kids kept swarming me! They all LOVED it!'" Daniella said. With that confident glow, it's no wonder why!

The 1 Makeup Tip That Totally Changed My Beauty Routine
Listen, I don't want to sound too over-the-top about this, but I'm honestly not sure how I lived before I embraced makeup-setting spray. A refreshing mist? A full face of makeup that actually lasts? The product's promises seemed too good to be true. (Spoiler alert: they weren't.)
It all started when I learned that I'd be doing my own makeup as a bridesmaid in my best friend's wedding. I've cried during literally every wedding ceremony I've ever attended, so I panicked at the thought of standing at the sunny altar beside my best friend, mascara and concealer dripping down my face, all runny makeup and bloodshot raccoon eyes. Not helping matters at all? I was also pregnant, which meant I was perpetually hot (see: red, sweaty forehead) and even more emotional than usual. Yikes.
Enter our beauty editors, who recommended a few waterproof eyeliners and suggested that I try a setting spray. Until then, I'd only used setting sprays on a handful of occasions, once when I had my makeup done plus a few times in college when a friend shared her spray before going out. I'd thought of it as a product for "real" beauty girls - people who used foundation and highlighter and who knew how to apply liquid eyeliner. I am not one of those people, and with my simpler routine, setting spray didn't feel worth it.
My turn as a pregnant bridesmaid felt like the right time to try it, though - I was going to need all the help I could get - so I combed through our list of the best setting sprays to find one that might suit me. I have incredibly sensitive skin that became even more sensitive during pregnancy, so after reading some reviews and checking ingredient lists, I purchased Urban Decay's All Nighter Long-Lasting Makeup Setting Spray ($31), which is free of oils and parabens.
Here's where I tell you that I don't typically get makeup-related compliments. I'm a concealer, mascara, and simple eyeliner kind of girl, and by the end of the day, my eyeliner is slightly smudged and the concealer has usually faded.
But damn if my makeup didn't stay put (and somehow look brighter?) during that wedding. It gave me a glowy look that usually escapes me thanks to my powder bronzer, and I didn't need to reapply mascara or eyeliner like I typically do. Even after hours in the sun and on the dance floor, plus a handful of tears during the ceremony, my drugstore makeup held up. It felt like a true pregnancy miracle.
The real miracle worker at play, of course, was the setting spray, which I now use nearly every weekend. A daytime BBQ? Sweat isn't a problem. All-night dance party? I leave looking almost the same as when I arrived.
So, OK, it may not change your life, but it will definitely up your makeup game.
Prince William and Kate Middleton Do a Low-Key Dinner With Pippa's Future In-Laws
Prince William and Kate Middleton joined Pippa Middleton's fiancé, James Matthews, and her future in-laws, David Matthews and Jane Parker, for an intimate family dinner in London on Thursday night. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were photographed leaving the home that Pippa and James share in Chelsea; William kept things casual in jeans and a button-down shirt, while Kate wore a $128 (!) floral Alice Temperley dress, black heels, and simple ponytail. Also on hand for the low-key get-together was Kate and Pippa's brother, James, as well as James Matthews's brother, Spencer, who starred on the British reality show Made in Chelsea and is reportedly serving as best man in James and Pippa's wedding next month. According to an onlooker, the dinner lasted for a little over three hours and the group "all seemed very happy and relaxed." "William was smiling and chatting to Kate as they walked to their car. It looked like they had a good evening," the source added.
Before Pippa and James tie the knot - their ceremony on May 20 will be held at her family's local church in Berkshire - Will and Kate will be celebrating their sixth wedding anniversary at the end of April. While the couple will be in attendance for Pippa's big day, it has been reported that Kate will not act as maid of honor in an effort not to upstage the blushing bride. Instaead, she will likely do a reading at the ceremony, and her kids, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, will also be involved: "Princess Charlotte is going to be one of the flower girls," a source told Us Weekly back in December. "They're planning for Prince George to be a page boy."
The Surprising Bath Product That Could Alleviate Your Migraines
Besides the pain of a throbbing headache, the most frustrating part of being a migraine sufferer is how difficult it is to find an effective treatment. I personally have given up on preventative or emergency medications, as many of them have only made me feel worse. But thanks to a viral Facebook post, those dealing with these awful headaches may finally be able to get some relief.
The Daily Mail discovered Facebook user Jill Hamilton's tip from a friend, which declares Johnson's Baby Soothing Vapor Bath ($5) as "life-changing."
"I get unbearable migraine headaches," read the post. "I started using this in the shower every night, I lather up really good and breathe in the smell for about five minutes then rinse off. And no more migraine!"
The relief may be due to the aromatherapeutic blend of rosemary, eucalyptus, and menthol. Cathy Glaser, the president of the Migraine Research Foundation, told Allure that researchers have been focusing on the benefits of menthol in particular.
"Menthol has been used as a 'non-drug' therapy for headaches for centuries. Although there are anecdotal reports that it's helpful, there is no scientific research supporting its use," says Glaser. "That's why we funded a study on cornmint oil (which is what menthol comes from) last year."
While there are no results yet from that study, it's worth testing out the Johnson's Baby Soothing Vapor Bath in the meantime. It could seriously improve your life if it works, but worst case scenario, you're out $5 - with a squeaky-clean body.
The Most Dangerous Sunscreens For Kids (and They're Probably Hiding in Your Beach Bag)
Along with wearing sunglasses and hats, sunscreen should always be a part of your family's Summer routine - but is the sunscreen in your beach bag right now actually safe? Healthy Child released a list of the 13 sunscreens with the worst EWG ratings for 2016 to alert parents.
The sunscreens that made the list have potentially harmful chemicals - oxybenzone (which can disrupt the hormone system) and retinyl palmitate (which may actually trigger skin damage on sun-exposed skin) - and high SPFs that don't actually do any more to protect your child than an SPF 30-50. Additionally, two formulas come in a spray that won't completely cover your little one's skin and could be inhaled into their lungs.
If any of these are in your arsenal, toss them and opt for one of these safe sunscreens instead.
Sip On Layers of Delicious Cherry Pie With Starbucks’s Newest Frappuccino
Just when we thought Starbucks's latest matcha pudding was enough incentive to move to Japan, the brand has us booking our flights and packing our bags immediately with the news of the latest Frappuccino. Drum roll, please . . . the American Cherry Pie Frappuccino is here to make all our drinkable dessert dreams come true. The Frappuccino is vanilla flavored, mixed with layers of cherry compote and whipped cream, but instead of a measly plastic lid, the drink is covered with a hard pie crust.
Starbucks Japan announced the new drink in a press release, sharing that it will be available from April 13 through May 16. The company also announced a "Starbucks Summer Festival 2017," an event which will celebrate the release of the drinkable dessert. It's unknown whether or not the new American Cherry Pie Frappuccino will make its way to the United States, but given the name of the drink, we think it should be mandatory!

1 Female Legislator's "White Male" Comment Sent These White Males Spinning
When Minnesota House members met to discuss a bill regarding harsh penalties for protesters that block major roads, Melissa Hortman, the Democratic-Farmer-Labor minority leader, noticed that some of her colleagues were missing. During the meeting, Democratic state Rep. Ilhan Omar gave a speech about the bill. She explained that if these harsh penalties were in order, movements like Black Lives Matter would not exist, but Hortman wasn't satisfied with lack of legislators on the floor.
Hortman pointed out that not only were her male colleagues not present to hear Omar's speech, but they also missed other amazing speeches made by women opposing the bill because they were in the retiring room . . . and she did not hold back with these thoughts. "I hate to break up the 100 percent white male card game in the retiring room, but I think this is an important debate," Hortman said.
As expected, her comment did not sit well with some of the male legislators, especially Republican Rep. Bob Dettmer. "I'm a white male," he said. "I respect everybody. But I really believe the comments that were made by the minority leader were really not appropriate. Minority leader, would you apologize to the body?" Hortman refused to back down.
"I have no intention of apologizing," Hortman said. "I am so tired of watching Rep. Susan Allen give an amazing speech, Rep. Peggy Flanagan give an amazing speech; watching Rep. Jamie Becker-Finn give an amazing speech, Rep. Rena Moran give the most heartfelt, incredible speech I've heard on this House floor as long as I can remember; watching Rep. Ilhan Omar give an amazing speech, and looking around to see where are my colleagues?"
She added: "And I went in the retiring room and I saw where a bunch of my colleagues were, and I'm really tired of watching women of color, in particular, being ignored. So, I'm not sorry." If we were there, this would be the moment we burst out into applause.
But Dettmer was not alone in feeling offended by Hortman's statement during the meeting. Republican Rep. Greg Davids told a local Minnesota publication that he believes she should resign for her "racist" comment. "I was greatly offended by Hortman's racist statement about white males," he told the Post-Bulletin. "I believe her comments have created a very hostile working environment."
Watch the video above to see how the House members handled Hortman's comment about sexism in the courtroom.

Turmeric Is the Hottest Ingredient to Add Into Your DIY Skin Care Routine
If rubbing a bright orange substance on your face makes you feel like Donald Trump, don't worry - what we're about to tell you has nothing to do with politics. The formula we're referring to is the turmeric spice, and it's a buzzy term in the holistic health community right now. The spice hails from India and has traditionally been used in cooking (it's part of the ginger root family). But these days, people are adding it to everything from their smoothies to face masks. We're going to explore the latter since turmeric has many amazing beauty uses.
"Turmeric is an age-old ingredient used for its internal as well as external health-and-beauty-promoting properties," explained Sheetal Rawal, a scientist and founder of brand Apsara. "It has been used in the Indian subcontinent for thousands of years for its natural antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and color-balancing properties. Currently, it is also gaining quite some fame in the West for its significant antioxidant properties."
This ability to bring down inflammation translates to skin care by minimizing acne or bringing down a rosacea flare-up. You can also rely on it for antiaging benefits. "It is loaded with key vitamins that facilitate important skin renewal processes, such as the creation of collagen," added Adina Grigore, the founder of S.W. Basics.
Barbara Close, founder and CEO of Naturopathica, explained the science behind this: "Extracts from turmeric, known as tetrahydrocurcuminoids, efficiently quench free radicals on the surface of the skin due to their antioxidant properties. This protects against damage from ultraviolet radiation and environmental irritants."
In fact, it is even incorporated into prebridal Indian rituals, during which the bride and groom are massaged with a turmeric-infused, homemade herbal concoction. "Turmeric in this age-old concoction is supposed to bring out the 'hidden glow' of the skin," Rawal shared.
Those with sensitive skin should not fear turmeric just because it's spicy. "It's wonderful for anyone who has supersensitive skin, but even for normal skin types, it really makes the skin look flawless," said Joanna Vargas, celebrity facialist and owner of her eponymous brand. "Make sure you are using pure organic turmeric. Some generic store-bought options contain dyes that can stain your skin after application. This is one ingredient where you must go organic."
If you're still hung up on having an Oompa Loompa face, Grigore has more to add on the matter. "And no, to answer your burning question, it won't dye your skin yellow," she mused. "If you're using it in powder form, just be sure to rinse it off thoroughly!"

Someone Finally Lined Up the New Beauty and the Beast With the Original
The new Beauty and the Beast is a completely different, er, beast than the 1991 original. There are darker twists in the story, the live action makes the Beast into kind of a hottie, and the soundtrack is all redone. That said, it's still the same tale as old as time, and there are a lot of shot-for-shot re-creations in the film. Oh My Disney has taken footage from the new and old films and placed it side by side, giving you a good idea of exactly how similar both movies are. Take a look!
The Real Reason the Queen Has 2 Birthdays
Image Source: Getty / WPA Pool
This month marks Queen Elizabeth II's 91st birthday, an event she'll celebrate with a string of engagements near one of her homes, Windsor Castle, in England. But if you're the monarch of England, you don't get just one birthday: you get two. In addition to commemorating her actual day of birth in April, Queen Elizabeth is also treated to a massive national celebration in honor of her special day every June. The hard-working queen, who rings in each new year with family, tends to take her birthday off.
The summertime celebration, though, is a bigger party. The June event is referred to as The Trooping of the Colour, an annual parade in London in which troops from the queen's Household Division parade on horses down London's Whitehall Street. There is music, and the queen conducts an inspection of the troops. The date changes depending on the year's calendar; in 2016, Queen Elizabeth's official birthday is Saturday, June 11.
There is a long tradition of monarchs celebrating their birthdays in the Summer. The date in June is usually selected when there's a better chance of good weather, something the Brits appreciate greatly during the warmer months. So all you have to do to celebrate your bithday in a socially acceptable manner? Be queen.

Gina Rodriguez Is Here to Kick the Gender Wage Gap's Ass
Before I even sit down on the couch next to Gina Rodriguez, she starts peppering me with facts about the wage gap. You see, an unkind, uneducated social media troll has just left her a nasty comment on Instagram saying that the wage gap doesn't exist, and she's had it. "Can you believe it?" she says, her own frustrated disbelief bouncing off the walls of the New York City hotel room we're in. I tell her that, unfortunately, I can. Right now women are typically paid 20 percent less than men, on average, even for doing the exact same job. It's a sad statistic that, as a young woman in the workforce, I've heard over and over again. Surprise, surprise, it doesn't get any easier to hear.
That's why the Jane the Virgin star has teamed up with Luna nutrition bars to fight for equality for women in the workplace. It's a topic she feels extremely passionate about, although she admits she's still learning. A lot of women might find themselves in the same boat - aware of a pay discrepancy between themselves and a male co-worker, but unsure of how to move forward or what action is needed to correct it - but Rodriguez is here to help anyone who wants to be educated.
As we chat in a room overlooking Trump Tower (the implications of which were not lost on me), the Golden Globe Award-winning actress and activist opened up about self-worth, empathy, and how women can take a stand.
POPSUGAR: There are many people in this country who deny that the gender pay gap even exists and dismiss it as a "myth." How do we even begin to communicate with or get through to those people?
Gina Rodriguez: I just wish I could talk to every single one. I'm not the kind of person who can ignore the negative. It stays that way if you don't touch people. Empathy won't exist if you're not like, "Hey, I'm here, I'm a human being." I'm still learning, because I don't know all the answers. I really don't. That's why this is so important to me! The gender pay gap in Hollywood was broken open in Hollywood a few years ago, since we had some really stellar women who weren't afraid to say, "Hey, I'm not getting paid as much as my counterparts." But this is happening across the board in every job, right? So when Luna came to me with this campaign, I was interested in it because at the time I found myself just so appreciative to be working. I was afraid to speak up, and I think a lot of women suffer from fear of being just so appreciative. Like, "I'm glad I have a job, I'm glad I'm here, I'm glad I can help support my family." Any riff-raff and I'm out, and I can't afford that. We are stronger when we come together. One thing that Luna does is champion and uplift women. We need to raise awareness for kids like this who will jump on my Instagram and say that the gender pay gap is a myth.
PS: How are you guys going about doing that?
GR: We're working with two organizations that specifically will help women get equipped with these kind of tools to help them have these conversations. I'm literally learning these myself, because for so long I was too appreciative to speak up, too scared. We're doing 20 percent off Luna bars to represent the 20 percent average pay gap, but also the American Association of University Women, who we're working with to donate and match up to $100,000 so that we can have salary negotiation workshops, because that's where you learn to have those conversations. Again, I'm learning how to have these conversations, because they scare me. They scare anyone. Just bringing them up makes people go crazy and get angry! It makes people get angry because that's what the truth does. The truth infuriates people. It can even infuriate me, because I don't always know the answer. We're trying to create solutions. We're also working with Lean In, which is a phenomenal nonprofit organization started by COO of Facebook Sheryl Sandberg, who's just a G. [laughs] She understands the necessity for women to have these communities so they can have these conversations, because they're terrifying.
PS: One reason for the gender pay gap is that women are far less likely than men to negotiate a higher salary or raise, usually because of self-confidence issues. Do you have any advice for female employees out there who are struggling with this and need encouragement?
GR: I think that because I don't have all the answers, AAUW and Lean In are going to be helpful for all of us. But I will say that it starts with self-worth, and it starts with self-love. That kind of confidence bleeds into every facet of your life. Not only speaking up for yourself for what you deserve in the workplace, but how you speak up in your own communities and your own friend circles, your relationship, your family . . . it's an important tool that I think is a part of this conversation. Even further than that, that self-love translates into supporting others. When you love yourself, it's very difficult to hate. When you uplift yourself and support the decisions you make, it's very easy to do that for other women. Little by little, support the women around you. Have these conversations that are difficult, learn new tools, and then teach someone what you've learned.
PS: I imagine that the set of Jane the Virgin, being such a feminist show, is a great work environment for women.
GR: It's fantastic. The women are very much cared for, and the men are cared for. There's very much an equal playing field on our set, and that's because it starts from the top down. It's Jennie Urman. She sets the tone, and the tone is treating everyone with respect and dignity, and being kind. There's no political totem pole. The PA is treated just like the producer is. There's respect because we all are needed to make that machine work. If you take out one piece, the machine falls apart. We're very conscientious of that, and our top-down environment supports that. You come on our set, and you feel that.
PS: Which is amazing. Unfortunately, so many other women face discrimination, harassment, and sexism at work, especially in industries that are predominantly male. If you could give one piece of advice to women working in hostile or unfair work environments, what would you say?
GR: Find your fellow women in that situation, and start creating a community and a voice together. Those are not easy things to be dealing with, so you don't want to deal with them alone. Find the people that are going to align themselves with you, that are going to be there to support you in this difficult journey. That is not an easy thing, and I send lots of prayers and love to the women who are going through that. That is not an easy environment, and sometimes it means taking yourself out of that environment. There's change to be made in that environment, though, which is the exciting part about it. If you are in a place where there is sexism or sexual harassment, or a very clear inequality, then that means that you get to be the superhero that helps change that. That's exciting! Not easy, but very exciting. It means you have an opportunity for growth, and if you can be that change . . . it's not easy, but damn is it fierce.
