Why Do the Most Inclusive TV Shows Get Canceled?

This week, Netflix did the unthinkable and canceled its cult hit show Sense8. A statement from VP of Original Content Cindy Holland said, "It is everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kickass and outright unforgettable. Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world." And in this aspect, Holland would be right. Sense8 was and is arguably one of the most inclusive and diverse shows in TV history. It depicts a staggering variety of races, sexualities, and cultures.

To make matters worse, there's a sort of salt-in-the-wound effect here that has fans extra angry. The first season of the show dropped in June 2015, meaning its audience had to wait nearly two years to see how the story continues. Netflix announced the cancellation just a month after dropping the second season . . . on June 1. Which, as you may or may not know, is the first day of LGBTQ Pride Month. As one fan noted on Twitter, several of the show's narratives are currently only half-finished.

As much as we could harp on Sense8 for eight or so more paragraphs, the show isn't the only one to receive what seems to be a premature cancellation. Just last month, The Real O'Neals got the ax from ABC, thus eliminating another series with a gay main character. Furthermore, when you look over this season's other canceled shows, you realize it's not just about the LGBTQ community, it's also about shows that prominently feature people of color. Freshman series Pitch, with a black woman as the lead, didn't earn a second season. The Get Down, another Netflix darling, only got one season. Other diverse shows, like American Crime, Dr. Ken, and Rosewood, were all nipped as well. All of these shows made powerful strides toward inclusion in their own various ways, and they also all had something else in common: loyal, passionate fan bases that didn't want to see their shows go.

In the past few months, Pitch fans rallied behind the #KeepHerinTheGame campaign, and avid viewers of The Real O'Neals got in on a movement called #TheRealReason. The latter was met with an outpouring of tweets: fans revealed how the show had educated them and their families. LGBTQ youth expressed how much it meant to have someone they could relate to on mainstream TV. When it comes to Pitch, it wasn't just about impassioned fans. The show premiered with stellar reviews in the Fall. So, why the hell are we still losing these shows?!

It boils down to numbers. When it comes to the cancellations of Pitch and The Real O'Neals, it's all about viewership. In January, Fox CEO and Chairman Gary Newman said the network was very happy with Pitch, but they "would've loved to see a bigger audience." Ratings from The Real O'Neals hovered around three million in season two, making it ABC's lowest-performing comedy.

Truth be told, Netflix doesn't typically share that kind of data and didn't cite it as a reason for cancellation, but it's a safe bet something similar was at play. After all, Netflix is notorious for canceling very few of its original series. The Get Down and Sense8 are among the first. It just goes to show: you can have an exceptional show with noted critical acclaim, and that still won't be enough. These networks want money.

That's the real tragedy here, and that's why it's so upsetting. Each of these three shows did something magnificent for the LGBTQ community and minorities. They were diverse and inclusive. As groups of people who are constantly erased in mainstream media, who struggle every year to get their stories on TV and in movies, shows like The Real O'Neals, The Get Down, Sense8, and Pitch really, really matter. Doesn't this kind of representation, excitement, enthusiasm, and positive feedback mean more to a network than revenue?

The real bullsh*t is that these underrepresented communities will always be the minority population in the United States. We're a smaller group of individuals, so even when we're all excited about something, we just can't make the same impact as a wider audience. And yet, we'll always be held to the same standard. We'll always be expected to deliver the same kinds of ratings as a show like The Big Bang Theory.

Netflix, with its generosity and openness and willingness to give niche audiences a chance, seemed like the media champion of content for marginalized individuals of our society. It never seemed like numbers mattered all that much, as long as they were making a stunning impact. But now that Sense8 and The Get Down are gone, we're not sure.

15 Fans Who Couldn't Handle Fear The Walking Dead's Shocking Death

Spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead below!

Fear the Walking Dead has been criticized in the past for moving too slow, and the writer's decision not to kill off any of the main characters (with the exception of Chris Manawa and Lisa Ortiz, obviously). That all changed on Sunday night, when the two-part season three premiere resulted in the major, shocking death of Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis). That family has it rough, huh?

Although Travis is able to claw his way out of a pit of zombies unscathed earlier in the episode, take down a ton of walkers, and save Nick from certain death, he isn't able to escape a bullet to the neck. After carrying Luciana to the helicopter and taking off with Alicia also on board, an unknown someone opens fire below and manages to deal Travis a fatal blow. Despite the gravity of his injury he has the forethought to realize he's not going to make it, and unbuckles his seat belt. He heads towards the chopper door and takes one last look at Alicia (and appears to reveal what looks like a bite mark on his stomach? Maybe that pit escape wasn't as successful as we thought), before throwing himself out of the helicopter to his death so he won't turn on board and harm any of the other passengers.

Since Travis has been an integral part of the story so far and was just starting to become a really interesting character, his bloody demise hit fans hard.

The Way Mike Fisher and Carrie Underwood Met Will Reignite Your Hope For a Future With Leo

Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher have been living in marital bliss since 2010. The duo, who are parents to 2-year-old son Isaiah, have shared so many cute moments together over the years. While it's hard to imagine things getting any sweeter than Carrie surprising Mike's NHL team by singing the national anthem at his game or him supporting her at award shows, it turns out that the start of their love story is probably their best moment of all. During a 2016 appearance on The Tyler Oakley Show, the "Church Bells" singer was asked if she's ever made out with a fan, including her husband. "No, he is!" she said. "I met him at a meet and greet."

She further explained how it all went down on a 2012 episode of Behind the Music. After agreeing to be set up with the hockey pro by her bassist Mike Childers in 2008, Carrie had him come backstage to meet her in order to take some of the pressure off a typical blind date setting. She was immediately taken with the handsome athlete and quickly texted Childers three words that sealed the deal: "Hot, hot, hot." We would have to agree, Carrie.

Lose Yourself in 13 Reasons Why's Brilliant, Haunting Soundtrack

For much of 13 Reasons Why, Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) spends his time walking around the halls of his high school with a pair of headphones and a cassette player, listening to the 13 tapes left behind by Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), a former classmate who had committed suicide a few weeks earlier. After finishing the series, the first thing we wanted to do was reach for our own headphones, because the show's soundtrack could not be more perfect. With a great mix of indie hits (like Lord Huron's "The Night We Met," which plays at the school dance), pop covers (Selena Gomez's "Only You"), and vintage classics (get ready for The Cure and Joy Division), the dark drama becomes that much more hauntingly memorable. Minnette actually picked out many of the tracks himself, so you have him to thank while you enjoy the next 36 songs.

British Prime Minister Says "Enough Is Enough" After Recent London Attacks

On June 6, British Prime Minister Theresa May addressed the UK following the third terrorist attack in Britain in the last three months. "We believe we are experiencing a new trend in the threat we face," May said, referring to the horrific attacks that occurred this past March, again in May at an Ariana Grande concert, and once more over the weekend when a white van struck several pedestrians on the London Bridge and three attackers stabbed passersby at nearby Borough Market.

May said the increasing terrorist attacks are being copied by individuals who have a perverse ideology of the Islamic religion. "It is an ideology that claims our western values of freedom, democracy and human rights are incompatible with the religion of Islam . . . [it is] a perversion of the truth."

May also called for prominent changes in the way the UK addressed the threat of terrorism, including new regulations on websites and internet service providers that allow "safe space[s]" for terrorists. "We need to work with allied democratic governments to reach international agreements that regulate cyberspace to prevent the spread of extremist and terrorism planning. And we need to do everything we can at home to reduce the risks of extremism online."

The prime minister also called out the UK's own issues with extremism, saying, "We need to live our lives not in a series of separated, segregated communities, but as one truly United Kingdom . . . Enough is enough . . . We must come together, we must pull together, and united we will take on and defeat our enemies."

President Donald Trump also issued several statements about the recent London attacks on Twitter, calling for a reinstatement of his blocked travel ban "as an extra level of safety!" Read what else he had to say below.

The 2 Best Tactics For When You Are (Inevitably) Interrupted While Speaking at Work

Although it may not be the biggest workplace issue facing women today, being interrupted during meetings or group discussions is a disrespectful annoyance that working women deal with on a constant basis. Studies have shown that women are interrupted more frequently than men (by both sexes), and men, specifically, are three times as likely to interrupt women than other men.

While it can be intensely frustrating to be interrupted while making a point, there are ways to smoothly address it and move forward without yielding your ground. Next time you're in the middle of a thought and someone interrupts you, try these tactics:

  1. Keep right on talking. Don't cede to the interrupter and simply continue speaking until you've completed your point.
  2. Say the interrupter's first name. In a move that is polite, firm, and oddly effective, try saying the interrupter's first name as you let them know you'll continue speaking. For example: "Rob, I'll just quickly finish this point." As Fortune points out, "You can also do this for others if you see a colleague being interrupted. 'Sarah, I'd actually like to hear the rest of Hannah's thoughts before we shift gears.'"

It's also worth reading up on the "amplification" tactic employed by female White House staffers, in which women in a meeting will repeat the points of other female members of the meeting and credit them, lest they be steamrolled, dismissed, or spoken over.

There are so many ways - both overt and subtle - in which women's voices in the workplace are undermined, so taking action wherever we can is crucial to eliminating discriminatory (not to mention totally irritating) workplace dynamics.

You Can Use FastPass at Pandora - but Here's Why You Might Not Want To

If you plan on visiting Walt Disney World's Pandora in the coming months, be prepared to wait. Since the so-called World of Avatar opened on May 27, there have reportedly been massive lines to simply enter the land. Inside, both rides have had wait times upward of four hours. The unusually long wait times have prompted many to turn to Disney's popular FastPass reservation service.

Namely, the big question on everyone's mind is: can you book FastPass reservations for Avatar Flight of Passage and Na'vi River Journey? Fortunately, yes! On the official Walt Disney World website, it states that FastPass reservations can be made for Pandora's rides. Unfortunately, reservations can only be made for one Pandora ride per day. Once you select your ride of choice, you'll be able to select a limited window of time to claim your reservation. Visitors are then allowed to make reservations at two other attractions within Animal Kingdom.

Naturally, there's a little strategizing that can be done. For starters, Avatar Flight of Passage will certainly be the more popular ride as it is the thrill ride. The line also moves slower because it doesn't accommodate as many people as Na'vi River Journey does. If you plan on riding the immersive 3D ride, then you should use the FastPass service for Avatar Flight of Passage and just bear the Na'vi River Journey line.

Oh, but there's another obstacle: FastPass reservations sell out crazy-fast. If you're planning your trip in advance, set a reminder to make your reservation as soon as you're able to. Disney allows you to make a reservation 30 days before your visit or 60 days in advance if you're staying at an official Disney Resort hotel.

If you're unable to make a reservation for either attraction, that is just fine. The lines for both rides are actually filled with cool features that should make your wait a little less excruciating. Check out some select pictures from the respective lines to see what we're talking about.

15 Things My Depression Would Definitely Text Me, If It Could

For those suffering from depression, it can often feel like nothing will ever get better and nobody will ever understand. My personal bouts consist of oversleeping, undereating, shutting down at inappropriate times, disconnecting or isolating myself from the people I care about in an effort "not to burden them," and generally being a challenging person to deal with and get through to.

I think about all the ways depression (and its sh*tty second cousin, anxiety) have made a home in me; like a devil on either shoulder, telling me I don't deserve the things I want, the people I love don't love me back, and the roads to healthy relationships and self-confidence will always be closed for construction. But one of the things I can bring to my decades-long odyssey with mental illness (besides, you know, medication and therapy) is a wry, malapropos sense of humor - because sometimes, it really does seem like there is nothing else. That being said, here are some text messages I just know I'd get from my depression if it could fit its grubby little hands around a cell phone (and if I actually gave it my number).

  1. It's honestly so crazy to me that you have friends. Isn't that crazy to you?
  2. You realize nobody like, actually likes you, right? Try looking up "tolerate" in the dictionary, hun.
  3. They "just want you to be happy?" LOL, you don't really believe that, do you?
  4. Yeah, that dude is WAY out of your league. Cute that you thought he'd be into you, though.
  5. Don't you think you're being a little too . . . I dunno . . . happy right now? Snap out of it, girl. It's not always about you!
  6. Isn't Pinterest so inspiring? It's like, all the things you'll never have and don't deserve, but in one handy place. You should check it multiple times a day!
  7. You really are better off just keeping your head down, getting your work done, and going home. Nobody will notice because nobody cares!
  8. You really are better off just saying you're tired, turning down the invite, and staying home. Nobody will notice because nobody cares!
  9. Wait, you tried to explain our relationship to someone?! I bet you cried! Way to go. Have fun looking insane.
  10. OMG, my vacay was amazing. Looks like you had a fun couple of weeks without me but I'm so glad to be back - aren't you so glad I'm back?
  11. Did that doctor just call me "severe?" Way harsh, Tai.
  12. Hey, we have that 11 hours of sleep that we really need to get to. So what the sun's still out? Seems like the sun's problem.
  13. Um, Anxiety just told me you were awake half the night thinking about how f*cked up your life is and didn't get the 11 hours of sleep we need to function. Care to explain?
  14. Wait, who told you your life was f*cked up? Not me, I hope.
  15. Dude, you're so dramatic. You'll be fiiiine. When have I ever lied to you?

Read on for the juicy details only flight attendants can provide.

1. What are some things that annoy flight attendants?

"Discourteous passengers, touching the flight attendant to get their attention as we walk by, whispering (the airplane can be very loud and I'm not the best at reading lips!), complaining about weather and/or aircraft maintenance delays (we don't have any control over this, and we are just as inconvenienced as you are)."

2. Why do tray tables and seats have to be in upright position for takeoffs and landings?

"Especially the tray tables! During an evacuation, where every second matters to get away from the plane, if a tray table is down it will slow down the egress of the two passengers on the middle and window seat. If the aircraft were on fire, wouldn't you want a clear escape path to the exit? Same goes for the seat back. Any added obstacle will slow egress in an emergency."

3. What is something flight attendants wish passengers knew/understood?

"We don't choose what we serve - we simply show up and serve what's there, and if it's not there, you're not getting any. We also have no control when it comes to delays due to weather and/or aircraft maintenance. So please, be courteous to us in the event those may occur. As Captain Sullenberger said, 'Better a delay than a disaster!'"

4. What are some common myths that people believe about flying that aren't true?

"That the brace position is meant to kill you faster - I find this to be the most ridiculous myth; in a crash landing you wouldn't want to be tucked away and brace your body for impact by compacting it and covering your vitals such as neck, face, stomach, etc. Even flight attendants have a brace position, and we do it every takeoff and landing!"

5. Does a cheaper ticket/airline mean a less safe flight?

"Absolutely not! A lot of variables make up the complex formula for ticket price such as time of booking, cabin, seat, frequent flyer status and miles, airplane configuration, in-flight service on that particular flight, optional items like baggage allowance or seat assignment. Basically, all aircraft are subject to FAA regulations, and we wouldn't be in the business if safety wasn't our number one priority. Airlines are able to customize their product to their brand, but safety remains the number one focus."

6. What sort of training does a flight attendant go through?

"Training is on average five and a half weeks, most of which is unpaid. In training we learn and are tested to proficiency on certain items such as aircraft general, first aid, security, and evacuation drills. Only about four days is spent on service!"

7. What are flight attendants trained in, in terms of safety emergency situations, both plane and people-related?

"We have a lot of formal training in safety and emergency situations. Four of our five weeks of intense, six-days-a-week training was spent on safety and emergency situations. Most of our people-related situations are learned on the job. We have been hired/selected by other professional flight attendants for our ability to make good decisions and to be able to read situations and people with good judgment. So many of us are well equipped to handle these situations that come up, but sometimes it does take a second opinion of another crew member."

8. What happens when one engine goes out?

"All aircraft are certified to fly with one engine operation for a safe landing. The aircraft that fly over water are ETOPS certified. Airplanes are aerodynamic, meaning they are designed so air can easily flow around the airplane to decrease drag so they can glide in descent for an extended time with one working engine. One example is Air Canada Flight 143, which ran out of fuel at 41,000 feet and managed to glide and land without a loss of life. And then there's the all too famous US Airways flight 1549 - so in short, engine failure isn't like a flat tire, just a rare inconvenience."

9. Can turbulence make a plane crash?

"No, but it can be unsettling and even throw people about. Due to modern technology, turbulence can now easily be predicted than ever before. In general the pilots know what's ahead of their aircraft at all times, but severe turbulence does happen unexpectedly from time to time. Most turbulence-related injuries are actually to flight attendants, as we are more vulnerable being out of our jumpsuits most of the flight. The main danger to passengers is not being seated with their seat belts fastened when this unlikely event occurs or unsecured items becoming instant projectiles."

10. What happens if the landing gear fails?

"Simple, we land without it! This event is actually called a 'belly landing,' where the plane lands on the belly without the gear lowered. This event has actually happened where LOT Polish Airlines Flight 16 landed with out the gear lowered with emergency vehicles and personnel on the ground standing by. The plane landed without incident on its belly, and the flight attendants warranted an evacuation - all 231 people were evacuated via the escape slides without injury or loss of life."

11. Is it safe to fly during a thunderstorm? What happens when a plane is hit by lightning?

"Planes are designed to be hit by lightning both in the air and on the ground! Thanks to the engineers who design the plane. The skin of the aircraft acts as a conductor to keep lightning from entering the internal parts of the aircraft, such as the cabin or anything such as flight controls that may affect the well-being of the airplane, and the lightning is redirected out through the wings and tail. There may be damage to the plane (rare), but it will make a safe landing. Thanks to the engineers and plane manufacturers, an airliner has not crashed from lightning in over 45 years. From the passenger perspective, there may be a loud bang or white glow, but not to worry, the internal parts if the plane are protected."

12. What are some reasons that a flight is completely canceled rather than just delayed?

"A lot of reasons can a play a factor with this, mostly crew legality comes into play especially out of our hub cities where we don't have ready reserve flight attendants who can easily take over the flight. FAA mandates how many hours a crew can work a day in any given duty period - pilots are usually 12 hours and flight attendants are usually 16 hours. A long day's friend is fatigue and fatigue is usually where mistakes can be made. Planes have been crippled and met demise under fatigue conditions of the crew. Sometimes the delay can be so long that they cancel the flight for the day and run an extra segment the following day.

Although cancellations are becoming more and more rare, with airlines running about 90 percent completion rate of flights. The most common cancellation is weather, where planes are late or never take off to come in or they just simply can't operate a safe operation under the severe weather conditions and it makes sense to cancel the flight vs. stringing the passengers along to departure that will never happen."

13. What are some tips you have for packing light?

"My suggestion is to wear your larger coat and bulkiest shoes on the flight if possible. Also pack things that combine well together. One skirt that goes with four different shirts or a dress that can be worn for day and evening. It cuts down on the number of items you'll have to pack. Things like underwear, socks, tank tops, etc. can be shoved into boots if those are something you choose to pack instead of wear on the plane."

14. What are the essentials you HAVE to have when you fly?

"(Noise-canceling) headphones, sweater/jacket/wrap or scarf, Kiehl's in-flight spray, and empty water bottle to fill up after security checkpoint."

15. What other travel tips/tricks/secrets do you have?

"Do not depend heavily on the airline/flight attendants. Things happen, we make mistakes, and sometimes we aren't having the best day, but if you can make the flight attendants smile or laugh, you'll never go thirsty. Always anticipate delays and your own needs such as temperature - bring a sweater, dietary needs - we aren't a 7-Eleven, bring your gluten-free stuff from home, medication - keep it with you at all times, along with your wallet, keys, and passport!"

16. Any tips for beating jet lag?

"Drink a lot of water! My best advice is to get yourself onto the time of the place you're going as best you can. If I get in and it's 2 p.m. and I really want to nap, I force myself to stay awake until it's 'bedtime.' It can be really challenging, but that's why coffee exists."

17. What's the coolest place you've ever been?

"I have to say that being paid to work a flight to Maui and then getting to lay on the beach all the next day and then working the flight back is not such a rough life. As long as I have enough time, I try to get out and find some things to explore in every city. I also love Boston and NYC (places I'd never been until I got this job)."

18. What made you get into the airline business? What do those in the business love about it?

"I have wanted to be a flight attendant for a long time. I have always been drawn to the idea of traveling all over for work, the flexible scheduling, and the fact that I get to work with a variety of people. Why people stay in the airline business is due to the flexible hours and the travel benefits. And with many of the larger carriers, once you've worked with them for 15 years, you get lifetime flying benefits with that carrier."

Father-Son Duo Has Some of the Swaggiest Dance Routines We’ve Ever Seen

For most toddlers, dancing is just a little leg bouncing and some arm flailing, but 4-year-old Josiah Freeland is proving that dance skills have no age limit, and he's learning from the best. Why Princess Diana Always Ditched Her Hat on Hospital Visits

Ahead of the Princess Diana fashion exhibit that opened at Kensington Palace, curator Eleri Lynn talked details with Vogue. Lynn discussed some of Diana's most memorable pieces and the occasions for which she'd wear them. While Diana wore plenty of glamorous gowns and stunning tiaras, there's a sweet story behind her modest floral "caring dress," which she frequently wore on hospital visits.

Princess Diana was photographed in the look at a São Paulo, Brazil, shelter in 1991, wearing no hat or gloves, but a gold choker, matching studs, and a long pendant. "You'll notice she is not wearing gloves. That's a royal protocol that she ditched because she liked to hold hands with people and make skin-to-skin contact," Lynn told Vogue, also explaining that she chose the costume jewelry for children to play with and nixed headwear because "you can't cuddle a child in a hat."

A Blogger Found a Way to Get the Shiplap Look For a Fraction of the Price

Fixer Upper star Joanna Gaines may have started the shiplap wall craze, but it's design bloggers who are making it affordable, like Jenny of Little Green Notebook. She recently gave her daughter's bathroom a dramatic makeover that will leave any modern-farmhouse-lover swooning. And the best part of the room isn't the charming shiplap on the walls - it's how little Jenny paid for it: $2.57 per board, which makes the entire room well under $100, inclusive of all materials.

How did she do it? The genius design blogger discovered a shiplap look-alike at Home Depot that's actually thinner and more pliable than the real thing, making it perfect for layering over existing wall surfaces. "Because it is such a thin product you can lay it right over the existing drywall and butt it up against your tile and door and widow casings the same way I did here," Jenny wrote in her blog post. So what is this cheap shiplap alternative called? Visit Little Green Notebook to find out. Your walls will be happy you did.

The Spelling Bee Winner Is So Badass, She Wrote Her Victory Speech Before Becoming a Champ

To some people, competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee might feel like a tremendous challenge. But to 12-year-old Ananya Vinay, this year's winner, it was simply a matter of studying for a few hours a day. Vinay was so confident she'd win that she wrote her speech before the competition as motivation.

Vinay, who is from Fresno, CA, spelled marocain correctly to win. The word, as Merriam-Webster notes, is defined as "a ribbed crepe fabric use in women's clothing." You can watch her winning moment ahead.

In addition to bragging rights and a shiny trophy, Vinay also comes away with $40,000 in cash and prizes. "It's a like a dream come true. I am so happy right now," she said to KTLA. Vinay is the first spelling bee winner to win the competition in three years, without competing in a tiebreaker.

23 Reasons You Should Finally Go to Bonnaroo This Year

"Stop pretending like you might not go to Bonnaroo this year," my boyfriend said a few months before last year's festival. I attended the Manchester, TN, music festival for the first time in 2015, and as the June date approached for the 15th-annual event, I was still coming to terms with the fact that I'd become a Bonnaroovian.

I've attended countless music festivals over the past 20 years - including Lollapalooza and Pitchfork in Chicago and Outside Lands and Treasure Island in San Francisco - but Bonnaroo felt different. For years, I've dismissed the Burning Man people who've tried to tell me I just won't understand until I try it, because I'd always rather spend my money on live music. But after just one time attending Bonnaroo, I think it's my Burning Man. I attended for the second time this year, and I doubt it will be my last.

Fair warning: Bonnaroo is not for everyone. It's very hot and humid, so unless you grew up in the South like I did, you could find it intolerable. It's also not easy to get to, since Manchester is an hour drive from Nashville. But perhaps the biggest dealbreaker for many people is the camping. Almost all of the attendees camp out on "the farm" (aka the 700 acres of land where Bonnaroo takes place), and unless you opt for an RV or a hotel in town (which means lots of travel time back and forth), you're sleeping in a tent, by your car, in what amounts to a massive parking lot. If that all sounds tolerable to you, then I highly recommend going to Bonnaroo at least once, because it's truly unlike any music festival I've ever experienced. Here are 23 reasons it's my favorite music festival.

How Koel Thomae Is Making Australian Yogurt the Next Big Thing

Americans' obsession with international yogurts shows no signs of stopping. First, there was Greek yogurt, then Icelandic. Now we're turning our attention to Australian-style yogurt, made in Colorado by a kickass ex-pat named Koel Thomae.

The co-founder of Noosa Yoghurt had her ah-ha moment during a trip to her native Australia in 2005, when she tasted a yogurt that literally changed her life. She returned to her home in Colorado and connected with a fourth-generation dairy farmer named Robert Graves to launch Noosa Yoghurt - known for its clever flavor combinations and creamy whole-milk recipe. Noosa is having a serious moment - it is now sold in 25,000-plus stores - but Thomae remains a down-to-earth entrepreneur, avid mountain biker, and working mom. Here's how she powers her happy.

What Parents Need to Do When Their Kid Comes Out as Transgender

Dayton has been advocating for LGBTQ rights since high school, when she did a complete 180 away from her upbringing and founded an alliance group. Since then she has remained vigilantly aware of the social and political issues facing her closest friends. She dreams of removing those obstacles, one article at a time.

We all have expectations for our kids. Of course, we encourage them to be whatever they want to their face. Your daughter can totally be the next pop sensation - who cares if she's tone deaf? Your son definitely has a career in pro gaming ahead of him. That's an easy job to break into. For the most part, we recognize that there might be some reality checks along the way, but we support their dreams! Because one of our many, many jobs as parents is to support our kids.

So then why do so many parents clam up when their kids come out as transgender? If we're willing to support our kids through the most improbable dreams, why can't we support their real identities? If something like feasibility doesn't stop us, why does gender? Do we just not know how to to be supportive, or are we just unsure of the entire situation?

No matter the reason, this moment of indecision or misplaced anger couldn't come at a worse time. You are one of the most important figures in your child's transition. Chelsea Williams, who has been a part of the LGBTQ community for years now since her fiancé is transgender, says that "parents can make or break their child's life . . . They can really make or break the transition."

So, no pressure.

Ahead, I'm gonna walk you through the entire process to make it as simple as possible. That way, you'll have absolutely no excuse for not supporting your child 110 percent.

What to Do When They First Come Out

This section can serve one of two purposes for you. It'll either prepare you for this conversation should your child ever come out as transgender, or it'll tell you exactly how you should've acted, if you feel you might have already made a mistake.

Now, you'll either be shocked or you won't when your child first comes out. Maybe you'll have a sneaking suspicion for a while, or maybe you'll be floored. If it's the latter, try and put your own feelings aside for just a moment, because these next couple minutes are crucial. It's more about them than it is about you.

Realize that if your child has approached you about being transgender, this is something they've given a lot of thought to.

Realize how difficult it has been for your child to confront you about this issue. They are baring a part of themselves for your acceptance, aware that you might reject a core part of their identity. You want to avoid doing that at all costs. Even if you are confused or disagree with them, do not reject them. Assure them that you still love them no matter what and do some research after the conversation.

If, after you've done some research, you still disagree with your child, understand that this is not something that you will ever be able to "argue" your child out of. I'll try to avoid making this a political or religious issue; just realize that if your child has approached you about being transgender, this is something they've given a lot of thought to. Rejecting the idea of their identity means rejecting your child.

What to Do Immediately After

First, ask what pronouns they'd like to go by and if they want to go by a different name. Their birth name might be gender neutral, or perhaps it has a special meaning in your family. This can be one of the hardest things to wrap your mind around. After all, you named your child; you picked that name for a specific reason. But your child is picking a new name for another, yet still valid, reason. Respect their choice; it's not a reflection on you as a parent!

(It'll take some practice to refer to them by their new name and appropriate pronouns. That's okay. They're probably expecting that and might have gone through something similar with their friends. Believe it or not, you probably weren't the first person your child told, especially if they're older.)

Next, be ready for a major style upheaval. They've probably always had a preference for one side of the traditional gender spectrum over the other, but now they can be overt about it. Trans boys might want baggier clothes, a trans girl might want more dresses. There are clothing exchanges you can participate in if you're not ready to purchase a whole new wardrobe.

It won't just be their clothes that change, though. Their hair, their shoes, and the smell of their deodorant may all change drastically. In fact, they might ask if they can change up their room. One of the best things you can do to show your support is to help them with these transitions. Redecorating your kid's room can be as simple as focusing on compatible color combinations, but don't just assume that boys like blue and girls like pink. There are affordable ways to redecorate. Get your child's opinion on it; even if you can't afford to redo their entire room, asking them their opinion on a specific pillow or comforter will show that you care.

Your child is still the same as they've always been, just freer.

Although constantly staying supportive is important, understand that not everything about your child will change. It can be easy to assume that everything about your child will flip, but that's not the case. Krispin Keyes, Williams's fiancé, advises parents to "remember that your child is still the same person they always have been." Adding, "My personality and interests haven't changed, just my name and pronouns." They might want a pink room, but still play football; they might want to cut off their hair, but still sing in choir. A person is not just made up of their gender - it is certainly a part of them, but that is not the whole package. Your child is still the same as they've always been, just freer.

How to Handle the Nitty Gritty

You want to reduce your child's gender dysphoria, which is a severe discomfort experienced when gender identity does not match up with outward physical appearance. Raising a teenager is always a challenge, but raising a transgender child through puberty is especially trying. There are a variety of options to reduce your child's gender dysphoria. If they haven't yet gone through puberty, at least pursue hormone blockers. Some changes resulting from puberty are extremely difficult to reverse.

On the other hand, if your child is already a teenager, there are alternatives. Some transgender men chest bind, some transgender women will stuff their bras. However, many eventually pursue hormone replacement therapy (HRT). This is an option that you may want to discuss with your child. Their decision to engage in HRT does not reflect how "really" transgender they are. Many transgender people decide not to pursue HRT or sexual reassignment surgery, but that doesn't mean that they were faking it or weren't serious about their transition.

Whatever their decision, do your research on some health hurdles. Chest binding can lead to uncomfortable rashes that you should know how to treat; HRT obviously drastically changes your child's body. Be prepared for mood swings, times two! Additionally, HRT and hormone blockers require a prescription; your child will likely require a diagnosis of gender dysphoria from a therapist. Check your local laws and talk to your family pediatrician/physician.

Regardless of specifics, you need to be supportive. Many parents see coming out as a way to get attention; it's not. Others see it as a phase; it's not. Still others see it as the death of one of their children; it's not. That is the attitude that Keyes's parents once adopted. "I'm not dead," Keyes says. "I'm just their son now."

Your child is still your child, and it's your responsibility to love them no matter what.

Your child is still your child, and it's your responsibility to love them no matter what. You might face different hurdles than other parents, but with patience, love, and this article, you are well-armed for the task. Especially given the uphill battle they'll probably face politically, professionally, and socially, they need you. Be understanding, be supportive, and be their parent.

It shouldn't be that hard.

We Bet You Didn't Know That Prince Harry's Real Name Isn't Harry

Prince Harry is by far one of our favorite royals. From his dashing good looks to his kind heart and willingness to help others, it isn't hard to tell why. While the 32-year-old has been in the spotlight for his entire life, there is one key fact we didn't know about him: his real name isn't Harry. Turns out, his birth name is Henry (full name Henry Charles Albert David Mountbatten-Windsor), a popular English name for kings. The word itself is loosely translated to mean "home ruler" (even though he's fifth in line for the throne). The fact that he uses a nickname is also pretty coincidental seeing that his girlfriend, Meghan Markle, also doesn't go by her birth name.
