The Badass Move Princess Diana Pulled After Finding Out About Charles's Affair
Image Source: Getty / Anwar Hussein
Prince Charles and Princess Diana's 11-year marriage was fraught with scandals, affairs, and, well, the fact that they weren't really all that in love to begin with. But after the birth of Prince Harry in 1984, Diana experienced what she called "some of the happiest years of her life" as a wife and mother - sadly, it didn't last too long. In 1986, Prince Charles rekindled his pre-Diana romance with Camilla Parker Bowles, a relationship that first started back in the early '70s. According to interviews and conversations with friends, Diana never believed that Charles and Camilla had fully broken things off; she even alleged to have found photos of Camilla in Charles's journal during their honeymoon and made the famous statement of there being "three of us" in the marriage, telling Martin Bashir in 1995, "It was a bit crowded."

In Andrew Morton's controversial biography Diana: Her True Story, first published in 1992, Diana recalled "one of the bravest moments" of her marriage - a calculated confrontation with Camilla herself at a 40th birthday party for Camilla's sister, of all places. The year was 1989, and Diana decided that, after putting the pieces together and realizing that Charles and Camilla were carrying on an affair, she would turn up at the event unannounced and talk to Camilla face to face, once and for all.
Nobody knew Diana was going to show up - she wasn't even invited - and in a truly badass move, the princess interrupted a conversation between Camilla, Charles, and another male guest to speak to Camilla. She looked "really uncomfortable and put her head down," and Diana continued: "OK, boys, I'm just going to have a quick word with Camilla and I'll be up in a minute." The two men "shot upstairs like chickens with no heads," Diana said, adding, "I could feel, upstairs, all hell breaking loose - 'What is she going to do?'"
What Diana did was exactly what she planned to do. Though she admitted to being "terrified" of Camilla, Diana recalled staying "deathly calm." "The voice inside me had said, 'just go for it,'" she said in a taped conversation. "I said, 'I know what's going on between you and Charles and I just want you to know that.'" The princess called Camilla's reply "very interesting": "She said to me, 'You've got everything you ever wanted. You've got all the men in the world fall in love with you and you've got two beautiful children, what more do you want?'" "So I said, 'I want my husband,'" Diana said. "I said to Camilla, 'I'm sorry I'm in the way . . . and it must be hell for both of you. But I do know what's going on. Don't treat me like an idiot.'"
The aftermath from Diana and Camilla's standoff was swift. Diana said that after the party, Prince Charles "was over me like a bad rash, and I cried like I have never cried before," and that in the days after the confrontation there was a "tremendous shift" in their relationship. In frustration, Diana began her own string of extramarital affairs until she and Charles eventually separated, then divorced at the behest of Queen Elizabeth II. The couple managed to stay civil while co-parenting their sons until Diana's tragic death in August 1997. Prince Charles and Camilla were married in 2005.

GLAAD's CEO Slams Trump's Military Ban: "It's Nothing About Being Patriotic"
Sunday night marked a progressive leap forward for the MTV VMAs. The award show was charged from the get-go: this year, MTV replaced the Moonman trophy with a gender-neutral "Moonperson," and during the ceremony, several stars shared their own political commentary. Pink wore a more subtle statement, while Paris Jackson called out white supremacists and Nazis when she took the mic.
Perhaps the most brilliant and meaningful decision, though, came when MTV opted to invite transgender military service members to the ceremony. The troops were accompanied by GLAAD CEO and President Sarah Kate Ellis, who participated in POPSUGAR's LGBTQ+ Pride Month essay project back in June with a personal essay about togetherness.
"It's such an honor and privilege to be with the people who are on the front lines for us, for our safety, security, and freedom. I feel honored to be with them tonight."
"It's such an honor and privilege to be with the people who are on the front lines for us, for our safety, security, and freedom," Ellis told me on the red carpet. "I feel honored to be with them tonight." Ellis seemed to share our sentiment that MTV's decision to invite transgender military service members was more than just a gesture. "I think this night is so remarkable because it's been such a fight on the front lines, literally every day, with this new administration. [There are] targets put on the backs of every marginalized group in this country, but to be with the trans service members today is really special. I feel really privileged, especially after Friday." Ellis was, of course, referring to President Donald Trump's official memo directing the Pentagon to move forward with the transgender military ban on Aug. 25. "I get to tell them in person, 'Thank you,' and 'I'm fighting for you,' and 'We've got your back on this, and we're going to fight as hard as we can.'"
Another highlight of my VMAs night was speaking with three of the transgender military members in attendance. Perhaps the most heartening aspect of our conversation was each active service member's determination to keep serving: "We're here to serve our country," Air Force Sergeant Logan Ireland stated, "and we're going to do so until we're told otherwise. That's why I enlisted, and that's why many people join the military: to serve our country."
Ellis shared my admiration for the soldiers. "You talk to them and you ask, 'How are you feeling?' Because their job is on the line. And they'll say, 'I have one job and that's to serve this country.' They don't even listen to the noise of all this crazy fighting . . . [we want] to bring awareness to the facts. Who are these people? You find out when you meet them: they are great people." This, it seems, was the purpose of the night's mission: to show the faces of the brave transgender military members who are determined to protect our freedom. To allow them to live their truth and tell their story in the beam of the MTV spotlight.
These words of kindness and reassurance brought Ellis to her final point: "[The ban] started for no good reason . . . there was not a problem that this started from. They've been serving for decades. In fact, as of a year ago, they've been working on how to serve openly and out, and that's been going smoothly. To have this 180 by this administration is nothing about being patriotic, it's all about politicizing."

Is Diet or Exercise More Important For Weight Loss?
I've always been active, but weight loss was never top of mind for me until I was a freshman in college. My first months away from home, I packed on some serious weight, but instead of cleaning up my diet, I started doing two-a-day cardio workouts, barely ate a bite all day, and binged on a calorie bomb late at night. The results? General exhaustion and minor, unsustainable weight loss. I wish I could say that I did my research, talked to a doctor, and changed my ways, but this vicious cycle continued for many, many years. Years later, I would kick my ass with an insane workout four or five times a week, and while I was stronger, I would not see any results on the scale or in my clothes. Things only changed when I was able to fully digest this fitness adage: "Abs are made in the kitchen."
There's data to back up this claim. In meta-analysis from Behavioural Weight Management Review Group, researchers determined that over the course of a year, the combination of diet with exercise leads to sustainable weight loss, but over a six-month period, adding exercise made no difference to participants' weight-loss success. Trainer Sam Kelman can vouch for this study's efficacy. Despite her intense workout schedule, she couldn't manage to shed the last 15 pounds she'd be holding on to. Without making any shifts to her workout routine, she let go of the weight she hadn't been able to lose in just a few months by changing her diet, specifically in terms of portion control.
Weight loss is not my primary fitness goal right now, but for many years, it absolutely was. It was only when I got honest about my propensity to emotionally eat that I was able to take off weight, keep it off, and refocus my workout goals to improved energy and strength. I only wish I had gotten the memo sooner, so I could have saved myself from years of miserable yo-yo dieting and self-doubt about my ability to achieve my goal. It was celebrity trainer Anna Kaiser who helped me make the shift with a dose of tough love: "Put down the fork. No one needs to be eating five bowls of pasta a week and think that they're going to get rid of saddlebags if they're doing 500 leg raises. It's just not going to happen." A little harsh? Yes. But true? Unfortunately.
5 Natural Tips For the Wellness-Loving Jet-Setter
The mind, body, and soul can always appreciate when we decide to pack up and explore new places. Sometimes the journey to get there has health-burdening effects - like being stuck on an airplane for hours, off-balance digestion, jet lag, and dry skin, to name a few. That shouldn't stop you from seeing more of the world. If you're a lover of travel and all things wellness, it's important to be mindful about supporting your body and sticking to a balanced routine while away from home. Have a long flight ahead of you and still want to keep up with your everyday wellness practices? Keep reading.
- Take echinacea before and after traveling: When this all-natural supplement is taken during travel time in the form of tablets or tea, it can help to reduce upper respiratory symptoms that appear as a result of flying, mid-travel headaches, and jet lag duration. It's a major immune booster filled with antioxidants. Start up to two weeks before your travels and follow up for another 14 days when you get back home.
- Use elixirs for a postflight glow: The way we look on the outside starts with what we put on the inside. For those with dietary restrictions, traveling can be a bit difficult. Flights usually serve highly processed meals and clean eating isn't always easily accessible when you're arriving in a foreign country. Beauty elixirs - nutritional powders that are packed with vitamins and minerals - can make up for it. Just add them to your water and drink up.
- Hydrate with more than just water: Flying can be extremely dehydrating and the effects can last for days, sometimes weeks. While drinking lots of water is always a good idea, there are other ways to hydrate. All-natural facial oils and thermal water sprays are the ideal carry-on companion. Apply before, during, and after traveling to kick up moisture and nourish dry skin.
- Fight inflammation with milk thistle: Flights and long car rides tend to end in some sort of discomfort and a bit of swelling. One way to combat this is with the help of natural supplements. Milk thistle is a highly anti-inflammatory, detoxifying option that can be found at your local Trader Joe's! If you want to get creative, you can open up the tablets and pour their contents right into a smoothie or drink to take on the go.
- Get some help staying stress-free: Some people get anxious while flying, some have trouble sleeping, and others just get stressed out on their way from point A to point B. Valerian root and lavender essential oil are calming herbal remedies. Take the root by mouth and add the oil to your temples, wrists, or favorite travel pillow to put yourself at ease.

You Might Freak the F*ck Out When You See What Pennywise the Clown Looks Like IRL
Image Source: Everett Collection, Getty / Jamie McCarthy
With a new iteration of Stephen King's bone-chilling It coming to the silver screen, that means a fresh take on Pennywise the Clown has also arrived. While the terrifying villain from the 1990 miniseries appeared more as a standard clown, just scarier (crisp white face paint, a red nose, bright red hair, Gwen Stefani in 2000-thin eyebrows), the latest version of Pennywise is significantly more horrifying. So, who's the man underneath the clown's fearsome veneer? Swedish actor Bill Skarsgard.
You might recognize Skarsgard's name thanks to older brother Alexander Skarsgard, famous for True Blood and Big Little Lies or their father, longtime actor and Thor star Stellan Skarsgard. It also isn't his first foray into horror. After racking up a host of roles in movies like Simple Simon (for which he was nominated for the Swedish equivalent of an Oscar), Anna Karenina, and Victoria, he starred on all three seasons of Netflix's Hemlock Grove as Roman Godfrey, a half vampire.
Since then, he's gone on to play Matthew in the dystopian YA series Allegiant and German informant Merkel in this Summer's spy thriller Atomic Blonde.
So, while you might feel your heart leap into your throat when you first lay eyes on the new Pennywise - who's grittier, scarred, and giving new meaning to the phrase "ten-head" - just know that there's a pretty sexy, normal Swedish guy underneath all those prosthetics.
Taco Bell Makeup Exists, and It's Better Than Getting Extra Cheese
If you're the type of person who goes to Taco Bell with a full glitter eye, then today's most delicious trend will speak to your soul - or 2 a.m. stomach. After the chain asked for makeup looks inspired by its logo and/or menu, beauty junkies did not disappoint in what they delivered.
It doesn't hurt that Taco Bell is practically synonymous with its soft purple lettering. Something about how the franchise's eponymous chime seems to be swaying in its logo just begs for a wing tip. But Taco Bell Makeup is a trend that's anything but mild - these looks are full Fire Sauce.
People are taking their inspiration from everything: Baja Blasts, Crunchwrap Supremes, even Taco Wrappers. One (hero) woman even just painted her whole dang eyelid to look like a stuffed tortilla. These makeup artists were all thinking inside the bun, and we could not be more satisfied (or hungry).

The next episode of Game of Thrones might not come until - deep breath, now - 2019, but at least there will always be YouTube. The latest GOT makeup tutorial we're loving pays homage to Daenerys Targaryen's subtle, natural look. It comes from Jessica Vill (aka Jbunzie) who has convincingly transformed into everyone from Selena Gomez to Ariana Grande. This time around, she could seriously pass for Emilia Clarke's twin.
Jessica used just a few makeup products very strategically, including the Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette ($29) to copy Khaleesi's brow and eye structures. Then, she used Besame Cosmetics Chocolate Kiss Lipstick ($22) both on her cheeks and lips, smudging out the edges to get that perfect blotted, just-kissed look. One brilliant tip she divulged was to stuff cotton into your upper lip for a "temporary lip job" that emulates Emilia's own natural fullness.

The 1 Fox News Clip That Sums Up Everything That's Wrong With Fox News
A stunningly tone-deaf clip from a Fox News broadcast during Hurricane Harvey surfaced on Aug. 27, racking up close to a million views on YouTube and enraging all corners of the internet, from Facebook to Reddit and everywhere in between. The clip focuses on a trio of women - one of whom is on crutches! - who are trying to get to safety in the throes of the wind and rain when they're interrupted by a Fox News reporter who begins to interrogate them on the spot. Things went from bad to worse, however, when the women attempted to continue on their way and the reporter stopped them, grabbing one of the women by her raincoat and saying, "My anchor back in New York has one more question." But that reporter isn't actually the worst person in the video - that designation goes to the grade-A assh*le anchor who's manning the desk back in New York who makes all four of them stand there as he asks a totally inappropriate question.
"There was an evacuation order," the anchor says. "Can you perhaps ask why the city didn't evacuate the 20 to 30 blocks along the bayous vs. someplace else? I mean, we haven't had any indication of that. It's like, you know, the Lower Ninth Ward, for example. If officials know you have a low-lying area, should there be an emergency plan to evacuate the low-lying areas?" It should be noted that the entire time the pontificating anchor is talking, the three women are standing there in silence as the reporter listens on and things get increasingly more awkward by the second. Luckily for all four people on camera in Texas, a kind woman in New York intercedes with the pompous anchor, cutting him off before the reporter has a chance to relay the question to the women who are still trying to get to shelter.
It's moments like these that really highlight how detached from reality Fox News has become. While perhaps the women knew the answers to his questions, it certainly wasn't the time for an anchor to ask them - nor was it framed in a way that should ever be directed at innocent bystanders during a natural disaster. Watch the clip in full above, but be prepared to be shaking your head at how ludicrous the whole thing is for the rest of the day.
10 Female-Directed Films That Saw Huge Box Office Success
Who run the world? Girls! OK, maybe ladies don't run the entire world, but they definitely know how to make a splash and rule the box office. Despite the fact that male directors are still the majority in the film industry, female directors have been big moneymakers for studios, and they deserve some recognition.
While Wonder Woman - directed by the fierce Patty Jenkins - is the latest box office success, sparking a lot of conversation about female directors in Hollywood (and why they should be making as much bank as their male counterparts), Jenkins is not the only woman who has earned big bucks from a successful film.
Women have been kicking butt in the movie world for a long time, and we're all about showing some love for those who've subtly - and not so subtly - directed some of the highest-grossing films throughout history. On the Fence About Getting Bangs? Here Are 11 Things to Consider First
Six years ago, I made the best decision in my hair life: I got bangs. At first, they were side bangs, only gracing a part of my tiny forehead. Since then, they've grown to become full-swept bangs, requiring a lot more maintenance and accidental trips to the hairdresser after badly trimming them. But if you're undecided on where you stand with getting bangs, you might want to consider all the items you'll need - and changes you'll have to make to your hair routine - first before making the cut.

If You Want to Lose Weight, You May Want to Stop Drinking Coffee - Here's Why
If you can't start your day without that usual morning cup of joe, it looks like you may actually be harming your chances of dropping the pounds. A study recently published in the Journal of Food Science delved into the effects of drinking coffee and found that it can actually trigger cravings for sweets. So if you always seem to have an unquenchable hunger for doughnuts after sipping some java, this may be why.
Researchers at Cornell University divided 107 participants into two different groups: one that was given decaffeinated coffee supplemented with 200 milligrams of caffeine (aka a pretty strong cup of coffee) and a second group that just drank plain ol' decaffeinated coffee. Both groups had sugar added to their brews. The panelists who consumed the caffeinated drink rated it as tasting less sweet during a sensory test.
So why exactly does this happen? Caffeine can dampen down your taste receptors temporarily, which makes food and drink taste less sweet than they actually are. This, in turn, may trigger the temptation to indulge your sweet tooth, since it's not feeling fully satisfied.
Robin Dando, one of the study's authors, explained the findings in an official press release, stating, "When you drink caffeinated coffee, it will change how you perceive taste - for however long that effect lasts. So if you eat food directly after drinking a caffeinated coffee or other caffeinated drinks, you will likely perceive food differently."
It's certainly important to note this is just one study, and you shouldn't make drastic changes to your diet without first consulting a doctor. But considering that one of our editors actually had a pretty positive experience while giving up coffee for a week, you may want to consider going cold turkey for a bit to see how it affects your overall health.
Whitney Port's Tearful Breakdown Is Every Mom Explaining Why She Wants to Stop Breastfeeding
In all her years in front of the camera as a reality star, Whitney Port has never been quite this exposed. The former MTV Hills alum - who gave birth to a baby boy a month ago - opened up about one of her greatest motherhood struggles in her YouTube series, I Love My Baby But . . .
In her emotional new video, the title, "I Haven't Loved Breastfeeding That Much," turns out to be an understatement. She begins by sharing how she fully intended to breastfeed her baby and was even aware that nursing "doesn't come so easy to a lot of people." Her first experience was even positive, but things quickly got worse.
"I thought I was doing really well and the nurses there said that the latch was good, and I was really surprised," she says. "But after about 24 to 48 hours of doing it, it just started to get so incredibly painful. And we came home, and I just hit a breaking point and said, 'I can't do this.' It feels like someone is slicing my nipples with glass."
"I'm not blaming myself for hurting, but I'm blaming myself for possibly quitting."
She explains how she turned to pumping and supplementing with formula, how a baby nurse helped "give my boobs a rest," how she met with a lactation consultant, how even an operation to correct baby Sonny's tongue-tie didn't help.
"I'm just tired, and I obviously want to breastfeed," she says, breaking down in tears.
Like so many moms who feel as though they have to overexplain their decision to stop breastfeeding, Whitney admits she has "demonized" the act in her head and is already "blaming myself for possibly quitting." She also admits she's been getting pressure from others. She says:
I feel like a lot of people are going to tell me to just have patience and try to do it because it's only been a week. But I just don't know if it's something that is going to get better or not. So that's what I feel anxious about. Like, how much longer am I willing to try it before I just give up on it and just pump and give him the bottles and be OK with it?
I've heard people talk about this pressure from other mothers . . . and I never thought that I would let it get to me because I think I'm a pretty strong person and I go with my gut and I don't really compare myself to other people, and now I'm doing exactly that.
In the eight-minute video, Whitney - who wipes away a near-constant stream of tears with the arm of her hoodie - looks not like a reality star but like a real new mom, plagued with fear and, she admits, "postbaby blues." She, like so many others in her same position, doesn't know what to do.
Her conclusion isn't satisfying, but it sure is a realistic one felt by so many others: "I just don't want to be regretful that I haven't tried everything."

The video comes to us from AsapSCIENCE, which creates popular YouTube science videos. What's going on? The video uses a hybrid image that combines pictures of the two icons and mutes or enhances certain details from each face. The test measures how well you're able to focus and pick up on details like contrast and spatial frequency.
So, for the answer: If you're at a normal viewing distance and get Albert Einstein, you have pretty decent vision. But if you see Marilyn Monroe, you should talk to your doctor about glasses or contacts.
This might be better than the whole dress debate, since it actually means something to your life. How do you compare to everyone else? Vote in the poll to find out!

8 Surprising Things That the Queen Carries in Her Handbag
Queen Elizabeth II is one of the most recognized figures in the world, and in public she is never, EVER separated from her iconic handbag. Her Majesty always carries a bespoke calfskin bag made by Royal Warrant holders Launer in the crook of her left arm, and she has around 200 of them which don't come cheap, costing up to $2,346 a pop. Over the years, the mystique around the queen's bag has increased, especially when it was revealed that she uses it to send coded messages to her staff. Apparently, if she places it on the table it indicates she would like to wrap things up in the next five minutes, and when she puts it on the floor, it signals to her lady-in-waiting that she would like her to come rescue her. But what secrets are contained inside the bag?
Princess Diana's London: Her Favorite Spots and Her Secret Social Life

The little corners and secret hideaways where she could still be herself, even though she was outside palace doors? Pizza dinners with William and Harry, raucous nights out, and main street favorites that she visited in disguise: we're taking a look at the London that Diana knew and loved.

Some key takeaways: definitely research the company, don't lie about everything but don't reveal too much either, and ask thoughtful questions that aren't personally offensive.
From blatantly sexist (or possibly murderous) candidates to those who actually brought along their parents to the interview, take a look at some of the internet's craziest interview horror stories. You'll feel better about yourself in minutes, we promise.
Bring Your Mother to Interview Day
"Keeping it real with y'all" is a valuable skill.
For the last time, just leave your murder paintings at home.
Why would you ever ask that, indeed.
Try not to shoot anyone in the head beforehand and you'll have a leg up.
Speaking of getting a leg up . . . this is gross.
Honesty is not always the best policy.
"I want to know about her life."
You know what happens when you assume, right?
Most expensive interview ever.

7 Secrets Real Estate Agents Know About Bathroom Renovations
Bathrooms are often a top priority for a home renovation, and with good reason. According to Brown Harris Stevens real estate agent Katharine Tuckerman, when it comes time to resell, a "bathroom can make or break a deal." In an older building especially, a new bathroom can be a sign of the property's overall condition and is "a load off for buyers psychologically." Conversely, she explains, "a bathroom that needs renovation tells a buyer that perhaps the plumbing needs updating as well," and may trigger money-pit anxiety. Katharine shares her tips for a bathroom renovation that will see a resale return and might even prompt a bidding war!

A Sleep Physician Reveals 20 Expert Secrets to a Better Night's Rest
Sleep has never come easy to me - and I know I'm not alone with this issue. Whether it's waking up countless times throughout the night, getting up in the morning feeling as if I didn't sleep at all, or having trouble actually nodding off at night, I'm always looking for ways to improve my rest.
Dr. Nate Watson is a sleep specialist, past president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), professor of neurology at the University of Washington, and codirector of the University of Washington Medicine Sleep Center. So we're going to go out on a limb and say he knows what he's talking about when it comes to sleep. He recently did an IamA on Reddit to address people's questions about how to improve their sleep habits, and his answers are so enlightening. Read on to see his helpful advice.
1. I have had issues falling asleep since I was 6. My brain wont quiet down. I am constantly thinking about something. Any tips?
"I suggest that you start a worry journal in the evening, set aside 15 minutes before you go to bed - write down your negative thoughts and then close the book, allowing you to go to bed with those thoughts on the page, not in your head."
2. How can a person determine how much sleep they actually need?
"Adults need seven or more hours, but each person is unique. You may need nine hours a night to feel rested. Take three weeks to fall asleep when you are tired and wake up refreshed without an alarm. That should determine how much sleep you need personally."
3. Why are some humans more nocturnal and others more diurnal?
"Chronotype is the notion that some people are 'morning larks' while others are 'night owls.' Much of this is genetically determined."
4. Why is that when I'm home I have to be laying down and comfortable to fall asleep and sometimes it still takes a while, but at work I can fall asleep sitting up in a chair with background noise all around?
"Sleeping better outside of your typical home environment may indicate a problem with your home sleep environment. Check out this page for a lot of info that may help."
5. Why do we sleep?
"Much of that is yet to be determined. We do know that the spaces in the brain expand to allow clearing out of the day's thoughts - like a garbage man for the brain."
6. What are some exercises (if any) you can do to improve REM sleep or deep sleep in general?
"A hot bath before bed has been shown to increase deep non-REM sleep. Some medications can reduce REM sleep (anti-depressants)."
7. I have diagnosed sleep apnea but hate the machine (can never sleep comfortably with it). Any advice ?
"1) Make sure you are of optimal weight 2) Avoid sleeping on your back to keep nasal passages clear. These are conservative measures. Other options are oral appliances custom fabricated by a dentist. There are also surgical options from ear, nose, and throat specialists. We always recommend seeing a board-certified sleep specialist to sort this out for you."
8. Do you have any tips for napping? I don't know how long it will take me to get to sleep, so how do I know when to set an alarm?
"Just set your alarm for 10-15 min. from when you lay down so you don't wake from a deeper stage of sleep and be groggy."
9. Does length of sleep have more of an affect on a person than the actual quality of it? At what point does quality and length even out?
"The bottom line is that very few people are able to succeed and be healthy on less than seven hours of sleep per night. Many who claim to get little sleep are probably exaggerating - and if they're not, I suspect that they would be even more successful, and much healthier in the long term, if their brains and bodies were fully charged with sleep. We tend to be poor judges of our alertness level, and we underestimate how we are affected by insufficient sleep. In addition, there is a ton of data to support that not getting enough sleep puts you at greater risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and more."
10. Does this length of sleep needed to feel rested differ from person to person or do we all collectively need exactly eight hours as many are told from youth?
"While most adults need seven or more hours of sleep each night, a small percentage of people function well on less sleep. If you feel refreshed when you wake up and remain alert throughout the day without needing to take a nap, then you may be getting enough sleep. But the problem is that we tend to be poor judges of our alertness level, and we underestimate how we are affected by insufficient sleep. In addition, there is a ton of data to support that not getting enough sleep puts you at greater risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and more. Try sleeping seven plus hours for a week, and I think you'll notice a more energetic, productive version of yourself that you didn't know existed."
11. Why don't I dream? Or rather why don't I remember my dreams?
"You for sure are dreaming. You only remember them if you wake from the dream. Not waking from REM sleep is good and indicates you likely have healthy sleep."
12. How does one deal with insomnia?
"If you think you may have insomnia, ask yourself the following questions: 1) Does it take you more than 30 minutes to fall asleep, or do you wake up during the night and have trouble returning to sleep, or do you wake up earlier than desired? 2) Do you have daytime symptoms such as fatigue, moodiness, sleepiness, or reduced energy? 3) Do you give yourself enough time in bed to get at least seven hours of sleep each night? 4) Do you go to bed in a safe, dark, and quiet environment that should allow you to sleep well? If you answered 'yes' to all of these questions, then you may have insomnia."
13. Are there any ethical restrictions against conducting studies to see how long people can go without sleep beyond a certain point, and what is the cutoff, if there is one?
"Rats die after about three weeks of total sleep deprivation. This is how we know sleep is essential to life. I have seen studies of 24-36 hours of sleep deprivation, but not much longer than that."
14. Did it ever happen to you that you were dreaming and you suddenly fall out of nowhere in your dream then wake up in panic thinking you just fell?
"That's called a 'hypnic jerk' and it is normal."
How is it that I wake up almost exactly one hour before my alarm goes off?
"You are probably thinking about this before you go to bed - this could be a self-fulfilling prophecy and I recommend not looking at the clock."
15. Is sleeping on your stomach bad for you? Is there anything such as a good sleeping position that keeps pressure of certain organs?
"Sleeping position is mostly personal preference, but if you can't sleep comfortably on your back, it may be a sign of sleep apnea."
16. I seem to sleep fine, but hell am I tired constantly; what's that all about?
"There are medical causes for fatigue that you should have checked out by your doctor. This could also be an indication of a sleep disorder. Sleep and sleep disease, such as obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia, are increasingly recognized as vital to a wide variety of public health and chronic disease concerns, including obesity, hypertension, and cancer. Definitely make sure you getting at least seven hours, too."
17. Why do some people enjoy "white noise" while they sleep?
"There is some thought that white noise might replicate the sounds you heard in the womb - making it soothing for children and adults."
18. Have you studied lucid dreaming at all?
"It is something that you can teach yourself and it can be an exhilarating experience. Stephen Laberge has produced some excellent teaching materials. Check them out!"
19. How do you feel about taking melatonin before sleep? Sometimes when I take melatonin I will wake up at 5 or 6 in the morning no matter what time I go to sleep. Why is this?
"Melatonin is not a 'sleeping pill' per se and has never been FDA approved. If you take it, then take it at least three hours before your intended bedtime, if not sooner, to notice any effect."
20. Can I train my body to need less sleep?
"Sorry, no."
Billy Eichner Teases His AHS: Cult Character With a Single Word
We're inching ever closer to American Horror Story's seventh season, and there's already plenty to figure out. Luckily, we got another major hint about what's to come during Sunday night's MTV VMAs.
We were able to snag Billy Eichner, who has been part of the season seven cast for a while, for a quick chat on the VMAs red carpet. Thanks to those badass character portraits from a while back, we know he plays a man named Harrison Wilton. We had one mission during our interview: to get any possible hint about the season.
AHS stars are notoriously tight-lipped, but when it comes to the latest installment of the show, this go-round is nowhere near as secretive as season six. That means we have some knowledge stored up. We know the title of the season is Cult, and based on the frightening trailer, it's going to be the hinging point of the season. We also know that Sarah Paulson will star as Ally, a woman who finds herself on the verge of a psychotic break after Donald Trump's presidential victory. The thing is, we're not entirely sure what the whole deal is with this creepy organization. The teasers hint at clowns and bees. The posters make us think of a hive mind. But that's as far as our knowledge goes.
What could we get out of Eichner? The first thing we asked about was the strange tidbit that was released with his casting announcement: he'll be wearing mostly "mysterious tank tops." With a laugh, he assured us, "That might have been a little overstated at the beginning." OK, so if the tank tops weren't a thing, what else could Eichner tell us about his role? We asked for a one-word hint.
"Beekeeper."
It may seem innocuous and silly, but it's actually a huge hint. In fact, Ryan Murphy teased the whole season with a picture of a beekeeper. In the context of the cult's "hive mind," this might mean that Eichner is one of the higher-ups in the organization. He might be one of the guys running the show. We can also assume he'll be close to Kai (Evan Peters), who, based on the trailer, is a very integral part of the cult. Another thing that was released with his casting announcement was his relation to Ally. Apparently, he's her close confidant. This puts him at a very crucial middle point between two of the show's biggest players.
What else could Eichner tell us about the season? "Very bold, inventive writing, and still scary as f*ck. Sometimes it freaks me out, and I know it's fake," he told us. "I'm standing right there, and I know it's all special effects, but the designers are so good at their jobs that it all looks so real." So, that settles it, right? This really will be one of the show's scariest seasons yet.
Here Is When You Can Buy Pat McGrath Labs at Sephora
Legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath had her loyal fans frothing at the mouth when she announced earlier this month that her namesake makeup line would no longer consist of limited-edition drops but a permanent collection. Now, the coveted 61-piece collection will be available at Sephora on Oct. 6, as announced in a teaser Instagram tutorial video above.
Called the Unlimited Edition, there are 12 lip pencils ($25), five eye pencils ($25), and 40 lipsticks ($38) all inspired by Pat's 25 years as a prolific makeup artist for runway shows and magazines. The product we're sure everyone will be clamoring for is the Mothership Eye Palette ($125), which comes in three versions with 10 shades each. They're based on the highly pigmented formulas in shadows released before, like Gold 001 and Dark Star 006, which take only a single swipe of the finger to get a supersaturated wash of color on the lids.
Diehard McGrath fans should know the Unlimited Edition debuts worldwide on Sept. 16 at patmcgrath.com. While it lands at Sephora online and in stores a few weeks later, let's celebrate the fact that the products will not only be the most accessible they've ever been but also will finally be available to test IRL.

This Robot Wants to Be Your Personal Assistant, DJ, and Photographer - and Won't Break the Bank
Despite all the technological advances of the last couple decades, we still haven't seen the robot butlers and personal assistants that we were promised back in the olden days of the 20th century. To Yossi Wolf, cofounder of the wildly successful Roboteam - which provides tactical robots for militaries around the world - this became the ultimate challenge. Wolf set out on a mission to create the world's first "truly intelligent, mobile, personal robot for your home, that places you at the center of your technology," and as of November 2017, the very first personal robot, Temi, will begin its initial roll-out on the path to making that dream a reality. And the best part? The price tag won't stretch beyond the $1,500 mark - which means you, too, can own your very own personal assistant, DJ, photographer, and video hub for the price of less than a MacBook Air. Behold, the robot of our dreams:
POPSUGAR sat down with Wolf on Aug. 22 to discuss Temi, which he described as "the iPhone of the home" but with the capability to "make you move." The upright robot comes when you call it and acts as the hub for all of your technology, content, and devices. It runs on an Android operating system - which means that it's compatible with all of your favorite apps - and is built on a set of algorithms that are constantly evolving and becoming smarter about you and your habits.
Temi has also been specially programmed for "autonomous navigation" alongside its artificial intelligence, which means that it adapts to your movement and the terrain in your household and is constantly mapping out how to get from its current location to where you are. That's right - this is a robot that comes when you call it and won't just bowl over anything that's in its way to get to you. What Wolf is alluding to, though, when he says that Temi will make you move is the fact that it enables you to go hands-free on all of your devices. "Hands-free is the future," Wolf said, and having a robot that runs Alexa and allows you to put down your phone enables you to "bring your eyes up again" and enjoy a more active life. We've all come home from work just to stare at our phones on the couch - with Temi, that no longer needs to happen. It does the heavy lifting for you.
But what exactly does Temi do, and what makes it special? For one, it has an 8-megapixel camera and Harman Kardon speakers - and is open to third-party developers alongside being fully integrated with Facebook, Uber, Spotify, and YouTube. It can play your music, connect you to your loved ones for a video conference, remind you to buy the milk - and even play your favorite movie or television show, following behind you when you move from room to room. But Temi isn't just for the able-bodied individuals who desperately want a robot to trail behind them playing their theme song as they clean their apartments. It's also the hands-free device that can help connect elderly people who may not have the ability to hold an iPad or see the screen on an iPhone. It opens up a world of innovation for everyone, and in seeing the machine face to face, it's hard not to feel like it's the exact thing that was predicted in some of our most classic American novels.
Temi officially launches in November, with an initial roll-out of 1,000 units, which will be distributed to a group of influencers and early adopters. Those robots will serve as the initial in-home beta test - Wolf wants to develop the product through user feedback and commentary - and he stresses the importance of making Temi the best it can be while keeping the price as consumer-friendly as possible. And while his personal robot will come loaded with the tools needed to get your news, sports, music, movies, friends, and family via simple voice command, Wolf is confident that there's a strong future in areas like telecare, education, and language learning, among others.
For now, it's hard not to be insanely excited about this massive step toward a future we've always hoped for but never quite had in our grasp. Check out more about Temi at its newly launched home on the web, and sign up for your chance to get included in the initial launch.
