10 Protein-Packed Snacks That'll Help You Shed Pounds

We're refocusing our calorie counts and making sure we're getting the right calories through macronutrients, and the macronutrient protein takes center stage when your goal is to build muscle or lose weight. For starters, protein keeps you fuller for a longer amount of time compared to equal portions of carbohydrates or fat. Protein can also keep your metabolism up, and the full feeling you get from a protein-packed snack will keep you from reaching for less healthy foods.

Jump-start your weight loss, reduce hunger, and boost your metabolism by adding a protein-rich snack or two into your day (it's way better for you than a bag of chips!). Need a little inspiration on where to start? Scroll through!

I Made These 3 Changes at Breakfast, Which Helped Me Lose Weight

Despite eating (what I thought was) a wholesome breakfast every morning, the pounds weren't dropping. So why was I not losing weight? All the experts say breakfast is key to boosting metabolism, after all. I didn't realize I was making three huge mistakes, but once I changed them, I could see the difference in how my body looked.

Bye-Bye Granola

Cereal was my go-to breakfast all the way from elementary school through college. Although sweet, delicious, and easy, it was the worst breakfast for me. It's full of sugary carbs and not much fiber or protein. I even went for the healthy stuff like Kashi's GoLean Crunch, granola, and Raisin Bran, but cereal is cereal, and it's not the most nutritious choice on the menu. I started focusing on getting 13 to 20 grams of protein, at least six grams of fiber, and 10 to 15 grams of healthy fats. So I ditched the boxes for a blender and started sipping on smoothies. I also do overnight oats because it reminds me of cereal - I'm huge fan of the brownie batter and banana cashew.

What Time Is It?

Not sure where I heard that you're supposed to eat first thing in the morning and to never skip breakfast, but I followed that advice diligently. I ate within a half hour after waking up, around 7:30, even if I wasn't hungry (99 percent of the time I wasn't). I'm convinced it turned on my hunger because by 9 a.m., I was starving, which translated to eating two breakfasts, and that meant twice the calories. No wonder I wasn't slimming down! Now I wake up, get in a workout, and usually don't feel hungry until 9 or 10. Listening to my body's cues when it comes to breakfast has carried through to other parts of my day. I eat when I'm hungry, not when the clock tells me to.

Tablespoons Aren't Just For Baking

Another huge mistake? I never measured anything. When I was eating cereal, I grabbed a huge bowl - way bigger than your typical soup or salad bowl - and poured with abandon. I usually mixed three different cereals; added raisins, nuts, and blueberries or banana; and used Very Vanilla soy milk. Holy calories! No joke - my bowl was easily pushing 600. Same went for oatmeal, yogurt with fruit and granola, toast, or smoothies. I got out my cups and spoons and measured everything, making sure it was around 400 calories. To this day, I still measure everything to avoid accidentally eyeballing higher amounts.

Here's the Cast of American Horror Story: Cult

Information about season seven of American Horror Story has been rolling in! While last season was (unfairly) shrouded in mystery until the premiere, we actually have more morsels about season seven since this year's Comic-Con, including the new title, premiere date, and details from Ryan Murphy himself. A few regular cast members have gotten on-board, but there are also some newbies we were really not expecting (Lena Dunham?!). We'll update you with more casting news as it's revealed, but for now, take a look at the returning alums and fresh faces.

Meet the Heroes of Hurricane Harvey

For many Texans, Hurricane Harvey was a once-in-a-lifetime event. The massive Category 4 storm didn't dissolve on impact; it continues to circle the gulf with drenching rains and heavy winds, bringing reservoirs and streams to max capacity and filling roadways with not inches but feet of water. Despite these conditions, the people of Texas have come out in droves to help those less fortunate than themselves. And it's not just the rescue workers who have been deputized to do this sort of work; regular citizens have also left the safety of shelter to help pitch in where and when they can. What we've seen over the last few days is the kindness of strangers being demonstrated on the grandest possible scale, and it's nothing short of heroic.

Ahead, we've highlighted some of the most heart-wrenching rescues that have been captured on the ground in Texas. And we'll continue to add to this list in the coming days and weeks, because every single one of these individuals is a true hero of Hurricane Harvey, and we couldn't be more grateful for their kindness.

The Deeper Significance Behind India's First Transgender Beauty Pageant

On Aug. 27 in Gurgaon, India, as Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" played over a loudspeaker, a woman named Nitasha Biswas made history. The 26 year-old fashion student has just become the inaugural winner of Miss Transqueen India, the country's first transgender beauty pageant.

For the most part, the night carried on like any normal pageant (because it was one!), but its social significance has reinvigorated India's dynamic yet complex LGBTQ+ community. As CNN noted, the hijra, or trans citizens of India, have played an important role in the country's past 3,000 years. During the 16th century, hijras served as respected government advisers, but the group has also been met with widespread discrimination. (In 2014, the Indian government voted to give hijras the legal right to identify as a third gender).

That's why business owner Reena Rai decided to start Miss Transqueen India and officially dubbed all contestants "winners." She almost went broke funding the pageant (Rai told CNN that at her lowest fiscal point, she had only $156 in her bank account). But Rai remained determined, widdling down 1,500 contestants to 16 finalists, who ranged in age from their early 20s to mid-50s. One hopeful was a lawyer, others were students.

Ultimately, Biswas took home the crown and later told The Indian Express that, "My journey was not easy. I feel very privileged to be where I am today and knowing so much of struggles and hardships that I've gone through." In March 2018, Biswas will go on to represent India at Miss International Transqueen in Thailand.

In pictures of the event, you can see the contestants doing their own makeup. Their hair was also on point, with equal representation of glamorous pageant girl curls and regal updos.

Biswas wore a peach lip and her hair down, so we're inclined to think there's something winning about that pairing. We will definitely try to replicate it at our next big event. Read on for stunning pictures from this historical event.

For Better Sleep, Do These Things 20 Minutes Before Bed

We spend about a third of our lives in slumberland, but many people complain of not sleeping well. If you have a tough time falling asleep or you toss and turn in the middle of the night, try exercising during the day and limiting alcohol and caffeine a few hours before bedtime. But if you are doing this already and still have troubles, here are three things to do immediately before hitting the hay to calm your body and mind and help you get the restful night of sleep you crave.

  1. The power of water: Twenty minutes before bedtime, dim the lights in the bathroom, turn on some relaxing tunes on your iPhone, and take a warm shower or bath. The heat soothes achy muscles, and the steam clears your sinuses, which is essential if allergy symptoms prevent you from sleeping well at night. It's also a great way to wash away germs and prevent you from getting sick, which can also make it difficult to sleep.
  2. Bye-bye pains: After your 10-minute warm bath or shower, slip into your PJs and do five minutes of stretching to ease any pains that prevent you from sleeping. Lower back pain is common for many, so if yours bothers you, here's a yoga sequence to offer back pain relief. If a sore neck and shoulders are your woe, do these soothing stretches. A little self-massage can also ease muscle tension, or apply a heating pad or one of those rice pillows you warm up in the microwave to sore areas.
  3. Get bored: Now slip into bed, not with a riveting, can't-put-it-down book, but one that has a dull, monotonous, stale topic that's bound to have your eyelids drooping in minutes. Be sure to read from an actual book, not a laptop or iPad, as the lights cue your brain to wake up.

21 Homemade Recipes You Can Realistically Cook For Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Even as someone who writes about food all day, I completely get that the struggle to cook at home is real. By the time I get home from a long day, I'm ready to put on sweatpants and satisfy my ravenous hunger immediately, which means I'm not about that elaborate-recipe life. I've definitely spent a fair chunk of change on overpriced salads for lunch, and as for the morning? I consider myself productive if I have enough time to set up my coffee maker and heat up Trader Joe's frozen oatmeal before rushing out the door. What I'm really saying is that cooking is hard. But it doesn't have to be.

Everyone needs a reset sometimes, and these recipes are here to help. In this list of 21 recipes - seven breakfasts, seven lunches, and seven dinners - you won't find bucket-list items like Gordon Ramsay's famous beef wellington; ain't nobody got time for that. What you will find are meal-prepped breakfasts, mason-jar lunches, and 20-minute dinners that barely require lifting a finger. Challenging yourself to cook at home more often doesn't have to be intimidating, and these recipes that you'll realistically have time to cook are proof.

3 Weight-Loss Rules For Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for so many reasons. But you need to make sure that you're doing it right. If you're trying to maintain or lose weight, here are some things to consider when enjoying your first meal of the day.

Eat It Soon

Studies have found that eating breakfast jump-starts your metabolism, and not only that, it can help ensure that you don't feel so starved later that you make bad eating choices for lunch or dinner. To take advantage of your body's fat-burning potential, try to eat breakfast soon after waking up.

Go For Filling

Stay away from foods that can lead to a midmorning crash. Instead, opt for meals that are full of slow-digesting nutrients to help keep you satisfied throughout the morning; high-fiber, high-protein breakfast options are a good choice for feeling full and energized. And make sure your breakfast doesn't have too much sugar in it - here are seven low-sugar, high-protein, and fiber-filled breakfast ideas that fit the bill.

Watch Out For Portions

A big breakfast can help fill you up, but you don't want to overdo it. Check out our handy chart of what servings sizes should look like, and keep calories in check with this list of the amount of calories in typical breakfasts.

The Inspiring Reason These Moms Got Matching Tattoos

When I was training for my first marathon, for which I was entirely out of my league, I reached a point where the fear I wouldn't be able to actually finish the race started to consume me. I had announced I was running the marathon all over social media and had raised several thousand dollars for Every Mother Counts, the nonprofit whose charity running team I had joined. As the training mileage got longer and more demanding, my runs got slower and more painful. I was overcome with the certainty I'd embarrass myself and let my donors down.

Intellectually, I knew my fear was misplaced. The people who had donated to my charity fundraiser were happy to support the cause whether I could run all 26.2 miles or not. Nobody on social media likely cared much about whether or not I finished, either. The race would be hard no matter how much natural talent I had or how perfect of a training plan I followed - that's just part of the deal with running your first marathon. So what was I so afraid of, really?

I called my best friend, whose name also happens to be Anna. I had noticed that when I talked about the marathon, I kept saying, "I have fear about the race," rather than, "I am afraid." I sounded like a bad English translator, but the words just kept coming out that way. Anna has a Master's Degree in Writing and is my go-to source any time I have a grammar conundrum. I thought perhaps she'd have some insight about why we say "I am afraid" in English, which is so all-encompassing, defining one's entire self, and why so many other languages say instead, "I have fear," which felt like a more accurate way to describe how I was feeling - fear was there, but so many other emotions were present as well.

We talked about how fear can be a gatekeeper for change, even when that change might be something really good. We talked about how instead of running away when we feel fear, there is so much to be gained from getting close to it, curious to see what change might exist on the other side.

Ultimately, Anna didn't have the answer to my question. But she did have a story about bison.

Some people think this is because they instinctively understand that the best way out is through and that attempting to run away from the storm will simply prolong their exposure to the elements.

She explained that bison are one of the only animals that, when a storm is coming, choose to head directly into the storm. Some people think this is because they instinctively understand that the best way out is through and that attempting to run away from the storm will simply prolong their exposure to the elements. Some people think bison have learned that where the storm has been, the vegetation has been watered and is therefore more abundant. Either way, time and time again, when a storm rolls in, bison sidle up into their herds, put their heads down, and walk directly into it, through it.

Anna came upon this anecdote years earlier when she was in the process of adopting her oldest son through the foster system. It was a grueling process, one in which she spent months unsure if she'd get to be this child's forever mother. When the storm of fear and doubt and worst-case scenarios threatened to blow down the door of her life, she'd think of the bison. She'd think of what might be on the other side of this storm, not just for her, but for her son, too. And then she'd put her head down and move forward, as mothers do.

Anna and I have sidled up next to each other through all kinds of storms. We went to the same college and became friends shortly after I graduated, while she was still in school. I married my college sweetheart when I was just 21 years old, the summer between my junior and senior years. When Anna got engaged to her college sweetheart, with plans for a pre-senior-year Summer wedding, a mutual friend set us up on a coffee date. It's a wild thing to do, to get married at 21, and perhaps there are inherent commonalities present in anyone crazy enough to do it. Or maybe we just liked each other. Either way, we connected immediately and navigated those early years of marriage together, learning how to grow up without growing apart.

We sidled up to each other as we figured out our careers, too. I went into advertising sales and then pharmaceutical sales, learning how to be a professional and hit a sales quota and negotiate a raise. She went into marketing at a start-up and learned how to draw clear boundaries, even as the lowest man on the totem pole.

We traveled to London and Spain with our husbands and danced on tables in Las Vegas with our girlfriends. We started blogs and proofread for each other.

We became mothers. In one of the most serendipitous coincidences of our friendship, we had both been drawn to the idea of adoption since we were teenagers. Maybe that's one of the reasons we held each other so close during the marriage-building and career-building and character-building years of our early 20s - perhaps we knew how much we'd need each other later.

She threw me a baby shower when I was pregnant with my my first son, who was 7 months old when she called to tell me that she was on her way to meet a baby boy in foster care who needed a family. Just one year later, I called to tell her the same thing. Eventually she and her husband officially adopted their son, and my husband and I officially adopted ours. In the following years she gave birth to two daughters, and now our five children giggle and wonder at how silly it is that their moms have the same name. They don't know about the storms we walked through to get here, to get them, to give them each other. But they know their moms have walked together, side by side.

For a season we were stay-at-home moms, now living in different cities but supporting each other all the same. I went back to work, and Anna went back to school. She got a job teaching writing as a college professor, and I quit my corporate job to pursue freelance writing full time. These were big, scary decisions. But we suspected there was something good on the other side, and we knew we didn't have to walk there alone.

The bison has been a touchpoint for us in understanding these storms, getting through them, and finding abundance on the other side. "Like the bison," we've said to each other, quietly and knowingly, nudging each other along.

The bison has been a touch point for us in understanding these storms, getting through them, and finding abundance on the other side.

We joked that we should get matching bison tattoos, which seemed slightly ridiculous considering neither of us had any tattoos and we were in our mid-30s. But then it didn't seem like a joke, and it didn't seem that ridiculous. But the right design and the right time never really presented themselves, and maybe that was a sign or something.

Earlier this year, along with eight other writers from the Coffee + Crumbs blog, we coauthored a book titled The Magic of Motherhood, filled with some of our most honest and raw stories about all the ways motherhood has broken our hearts - usually for better and sometimes for worse. The day I got my first copy of that book in the mail - a real book with a beautiful hardbound cover containing the credentials of a fancy New York publisher - the first thing I saw was my name, right next to her name. I broke down and wept.

We were on the other side. Sure, there will be plenty more storms to roll in and threaten to blow the doors down again. But we've weathered so many storms together, and that book felt like tangible proof of the abundance we've found on the other side . . . on the other side of being young brides, on the other side of finding our vocation, on the other side of adoption, on the other side of childbirth, on the other side of 30th birthdays and 10-year wedding anniversaries and becoming published authors. On the other side, like the bison.

A week before the release party for the book, I texted her: We should get the matching bison tattoo when we're together for the party. She replied immediately: I was already thinking about that so obviously the answer is yes.

We took to the internet and finally found a design we loved, courtesy of artist Tim Cheneval. I solicited a tattoo artist recommendation from a friend with a full sleeve of tattoos and made an appointment for 10 p.m. two days before our book release party. We awkwardly explained our story to the big, bearded tattoo artist (who looks exactly the way you think he would). He told us he liked the design, and he dipped his tattoo needle into black ink to permanently etch into our forearms the outline of a bison with its head down, charging forward, come what may, toward our hearts.

Why Disneyland's Haunted Mansion Is Better With The Nightmare Before Christmas Theme

The countdown to Halloween at Disneyland has officially begun, and one of the best parts about the park's holiday kickoff on Sept. 15 is the major transformation of the Haunted Mansion ride into its Nightmare Before Christmas theme. This may be a controversial opinion, but, personally, I love how festive and fun the Haunted Mansion becomes for the Halloween and holiday season, much more than when it's just a standard spooky ride.

It's vibrantly and creatively decorated (seriously, Disney doesn't miss a single detail), puts you in a happy Halloween and holiday mood, and has you humming the catchy songs from The Nightmare Before Christmas for the rest of the day. How could you choose the classic over that? Once you've been on Haunted Mansion holiday, the original ride just feels . . . boring. To prove my point, here are the best things about the themed version!

This CNN Crew's Daring Rescue of a Hurricane Harvey Survivor Will Make Your Heart Race

All week, we've seen heroic acts from citizens and rescue workers across Texas as they come together following the deadly and destructive aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Another example of strangers stepping up to support one another took place on Aug. 30, when CNN anchor Drew Griffin and his team stopped preparing for an on-the-scene report to instead rescue a man who accidentally drove into a flood of water - and it was all caught on camera.

In the heart-racing clip, Griffin and his crew members rush over to the drowning driver after finding a rope long enough to help pull him out. "I want to thank these guys for saving my life," the man says on camera to Griffin following his rescue. The ordeal - which had a heartwarming resolution - stood in a stark contrast to the now-viral Fox News clip that shows an anchor interrogating a group of women, asking them why they didn't evacuate before the storm - all while they're trying to flee from Harvey's path for safety.

The Rightful Heir to the Iron Throne May Not Be Who You Think

Now that the Wall has come down on Game of Thrones, the question of who will sit the Iron Throne seems trivial by comparison. However, the Great War, as Jon has dubbed it, will presumably come to an end, and the matter of rebuilding the Seven Kingdoms after the dead are defeated is sure to play a role in the final six episodes. So the question of who is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne must be asked, and the answer isn't as simple as Bran's season finale proclamation of Jon's true heritage might suggest.

Even in Westeros, the line of succession seems to matter. When a dynasty is unseated, the only way for them to reclaim their power is through force or internal support from people in power. Technically, that means Daenerys and Jon's Targaryen blood doesn't automatically mean Cersei should hand the throne over to either of them. Like it or not, the Targaryens were defeated in Robert's Rebellion, and Robert was named king. The moment he took the throne, the Baratheon family became the ruling dynasty in Westeros. Sadly, they haven't fared well since then. With their line almost entirely gone, the matter of succession has become muddled to say the least, but it's not impossible to untangle. Let's take a look at the people with the strongest claim to the Iron Throne who are still on the playing field.

I Found a Realistic, High-Quality Blond Wig For Halloween, and It Only Cost Me $13

For Halloween last year, my coworker and I were dead-set on being Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen for our office party. I went to every costume store in the area to find us the perfect wigs, but they were all terrible and incredibly fake looking. The options were knotty, were too shiny, and didn't fit my head well. One friend suggested that I look on Amazon, which is where I found the MelodySusie Cosplay Blonde Curly Wig ($13). With such a low price, I figured it was worth the risk to purchase the online pick.

When it arrived, I was totally shocked by the packaging and quality of my order. It came neatly folded in a box along with a wig cap and metal comb. The wig itself has two adjustment straps inside, which can be intertwined to a fixed position to suit different head sizes. When I put it on, it easily slid over my head. The hair itself was smooth and glossy, but not artificial looking. I trimmed mine a bit to more closely match Ashley Olson's haircut, while my coworker Hilary kept hers long.

I wore the wig for eight hours without having to fidget with it. The metal comb came in handy - it easily detangled my fake strands. The look of the wig is also very versatile - you could be Cersei Lannister (pre-haircut), Elle Woods, Luna Lovegood, Regina George, Barbie, and more. The wig also comes in red, blue, purple, and pink, so the possibilities are truly endless. If you're looking for a good wig this Halloween, you won't be disappointed by this one.

Pink Won't Grow Out Her Hair, and the Reason Why Is So Heartwarming

Ever since she came on the scene in 1999, Pink has always worn a short haircut. She's experimented plenty, wearing everything from a platinum blonde mohawk to a bubblegum-pink pompadour, but her androgynous cut has remained. At the MTV VMAs, where she accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, Pink explained why she keeps it short in a heartwarming story about her 6-year-old daughter.

During a drive to school, her daughter told her, "I am the ugliest girl I know" and "I look like a boy with long hair." Pink responded by making a PowerPoint presentation celebrating gender-bending icons like David Bowie, Michael Jackson, and Prince, and then she gave her some wise words.

"Do you see me growing my hair? Do you see me changing my body?" she asked. Her daughter said no. "Do you see me selling out arenas worldwide?" Her daughter said yes. "We don't change. We take the gravel and the shell and we make a pearl," Pink continued. "We help other people to change so that they can see more kinds of beauty."

May Pink continue being outspoken and inspiring . . . and keep serving incredible short-hair inspiration while she's at it.

With Just $250, 1 Woman Completely Transformed Her Drab Kitchen

When Avery Michaels moved into her early 20th century home located in a small town in Iowa, she couldn't have been more grateful. See, her husband is a pastor and his church kindly allowed for the couple to live in the home free of charge. While the craftsman-style home is full of original details from the early 20th century, the kitchen was remodeled in the '80s - and it showed.

Fortunately, the blogger and Etsy seller was able to use her creativity to completely transform the kitchen at a remarkably low cost. In a recent blog post, Avery detailed her process.

Avery started off by degreasing the cabinets to prep them for a fresh coat of bright paint. She then applied two coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in two colors: Pure White and Duck Egg Blue. In addition to painting the cupboards, Avery painted the window frame, the backsplash, and all of the walls. She also installed chic gold hardware. To avoid the expense of installing new flooring, Avery got creative and added a large rug.

Ultimately, Avery didn't have to replace any fixtures or appliances. So the total cost of her DIY remodel ended up coming in at under $250. Ahead, see the shocking before-and-after pictures that'll make you think you're looking at two entirely different kitchens.

In a 1993 Interview, Selena Revealed the 1 Person Who Inspired Her Music

Before Selena took the stage for her iconic concert at the Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi, TX, on Feb. 7, 1993, she spoke to local Channel 10 about her biggest musical influences. You might be expecting her to name an international star or Tejano icon, but her answer will actually melt your heart and break it into a million pieces all at once.

"I would say my father," she told Channel 10. "My father used to have a band way back when, and I guess it's where we got the musical talent from." Aww, Selena!

Abraham Quintanilla, Selena's father, was part of the band Los Dinos in the early 1960s. After they disbanded in 1974, Abraham kept the name and formed a new group, Selena y Los Dinos in 1980 when Selena was just 9 years old. Of course, you already know, the band went on to win a Grammy Award for the recording of this exact concert in Corpus Christi, which was released as a live album called Selena Live!. Watch the sweet interview above, and see what else Selena had to say about her rise to fame.

When Does Season 8 of Game of Thrones Start? Well, We've Got Bad News . . .

If you'd rather get roasted alive by dragon fire than endure the long wait for Game of Thrones to return, then we suggest you start picking out vases for your ashes now. As much as it pains us to relay this information, HBO's fantasy drama probably won't drop season eight until some to-be-determined date in 2019.

Yes. As in, two whole years from now.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, production on Game of Thrones won't resume until October and could run as late as August 2018. That means that the eighth season, which is only six episodes long, will likely make its final run in 2019, leaving a 16-month gap between seasons. "Our production people are trying to figure out a timeline for the shoot and how much time the special effects take," explained Casey Bloys, HBO programming president. "The shooting is complicated enough - on different continents, with all the technical aspects - and the special effects are a whole other production period that we're trying to figure out. That is a big factor in all of this."

The bright side of this is that while we all wither from old age, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss already have the new episodes ready to go. Apparently all they need to do is wrangle the show's massive cast and build out a schedule (Drogon can be such a diva, you know?).

While the long wait is a buzzkill, it just means you have that much more time to devote yourself to Reddit theories about whether or not Bran is really the Night King, if Qyburn isn't as creepy as he seems, and all that auntie-nephew weirdness.

The Details of Laci Peterson's Murder Will Still Chill You to Your Very Core

There are very few murder investigations that capture the attention of the entire country, but the ones that do usually stay with people forever. Laci Peterson became one of those cases when she went missing on Christmas Eve in 2002. While any missing persons case is devastating, people became enamored with the beautiful 27-year-old because she was eight months pregnant with her son, who was to be named Connor, when she vanished. Those closest to Laci, and the general public, couldn't understand why someone would want to hurt a woman who didn't appear to have any enemies. But as the days turned into weeks following her disappearance, the details of what happened slowly began to fill in the confusing puzzle, and it still remains one of the most chilling murder cases in recent years.

Laci's husband (and Connor's dad), Scott Peterson, quickly became the police's main suspect due to his bizarre behavior, his repeated refusals to take a polygraph test, and his general lack of interest in the investigation's progress. Scott was eventually found guilty of murdering his wife and unborn son and was sentenced to death in 2004. He is currently on death row at San Quentin State Prison in California, where he recently spoke out for the first time in over a decade for A&E's docuseries The Murder of Laci Peterson. Here are six heartbreaking facts from one of the most infamous murder cases in history.

1. Laci Was Last Seen on Christmas Eve 2002

On the morning of Dec. 24, 2002, Scott left their Modesto, CA, home to go fishing, while Laci took their dog for a walk. Later that afternoon, a neighbor saw their dog wandering around while still wearing its leash. Scott later told police that after leaving their house that morning, he went to his nearby warehouse to send emails and get his boat, which was backed up by email time stamps and a warehouse receipt. He said that after about 90 minutes of fishing, he returned home to an empty house and showered, thinking Laci had gone over to her mom's house. Scott called Laci's parents that evening to ask if they knew where she was, and they immediately called police to report that she was missing.

2. Scott Quickly Became a Suspect

While many murder victims die at the hands of someone they know, it was Scott's questionable behavior in the days after Laci's disappearance that put him at the top of the suspects list. Police reported that Scott almost immediately began referring to Laci in the past tense as if she wasn't alive anymore, even before they found her body. But the biggest bombshell of all came when Scott's mistress, Amber Frey, revealed their relationship to the media shortly after she learned about Laci's disappearance. Amber agreed to record her phone conversations with Scott without his knowledge, and she told police that two weeks before Laci went missing, Scott had told her he was a widower and that this would be the first Christmas without his wife. Scott was also photographed laughing and smiling at a vigil for Laci just a few days after she went missing, where he called Amber and pretended he was partying in Paris on New Year's Eve.

3. Laci and Connor's Bodies Were Mutilated

In April 2003, four months after Laci went missing, a couple out walking their dog discovered Connor's body washed up on the San Francisco Bay shore. Plastic tape was reportedly found around his neck, and there was also a large cut on the right side of his body. One day later, Laci's body washed ashore just one mile from where Connor was found. She was decapitated, both forearms were missing, her right foot was severed, and the bottom half of her left leg was missing. Because her body was badly decomposed, her exact cause of death couldn't be determined.

4. Scott Appeared to Be on the Run When He Was Arrested

After months of speculation, Scott was arrested on April 18, 2003, at a golf course in San Diego, where he said he was staying to avoid media attention. At the time of his arrest, he was carrying $15,000 in cash, four cell phones, his brother's ID, and camping gear and had dyed his hair blond.

5. Scott Was Sentenced to Death

His trial began in June 2004, and a judge sentenced him to die by lethal injection that November. Similarly to O.J. Simpson's trial, people all over the country gathered in public places to hear the verdict and celebrate his conviction together.

6. He Still Maintains His Innocence

In a recorded phone call with his sister-in-law, Janey, from June 2017, Scott spoke from his prison cell about the moment the guilty verdict was read, saying he "had no idea" the jury would think he did it. "When they told me, I had just a terrible physical reaction," he said. "I mean it was a really emotional, physical reaction. I couldn't feel my feet on the floor. I couldn't feel the chair I was sitting in. My vision was even a little blurry. And I just had this weird sensation that I was falling forward - and forward and down and there was going to be no end to this falling forward and down, like there was no floor to land on. I, I was staggered by it. I had no idea it was coming." Scott is still appealing his case.

You Weren't the Only One Who Caught a Trump Connection in the Game of Thrones Finale

Kit Harrington as Jon Snow in Game of Thrones.

As I watched the Game of Thrones finale with my boyfriend on Sunday night, a certain mini monologue by Jon Snow made us both pause thanks to its seemingly obvious subliminal message about Donald Trump. We weren't the only ones who made the connection - several internet commenters were quick to draw a comparison, and even former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci appeared to not-so-subtly subtweet the Trump administration with a quote from the speech:

Now, in a new interview with Variety, Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham - who plays Davos in the series - admits the connection to real-life events wasn't lost on the cast and crew. In the Q&A, published on Aug. 28, Cunningham revealed that Kit Harrington actually first did a full dress rehearsal of the scene the very day Donald Trump was elected. He says the real-life events certainly were top of mind on set as Jon Snow gave his speech about how "when enough people make false promises, words stop meaning anything."

"That speech that Jon Snow gave about the nature of lies and what's been said, and what happens if we don't stick to our word - we filmed that on exactly the day that a certain POTUS was elected and it had incredible resonance while we were filming it," Cunningham told the publication.

Liam Cunningham (Davos) in Game of Thrones.

"The [election] results had just been announced the morning we filmed that particular scene - that particular day of that scene with Mr. Kit Harington. We may have been rehearsing that scene. But that was the first time that Kit Harington had said those words on that platform in that scene. So it had a certain resonance, I'm sure you'll understand."

When the interviewer asked Cunningham if the election was something everyone on set had been talking about, the actor shot back, "Was there a person on the planet not discussing that election?"

30 Tiny, Chic Wrist Tattoos That Are Better Than a Bracelet

If you truly want to wear your heart on your sleeve, then the wrist should be the canvas for your next tattoo. A flat plane fairly easy to tattoo, the wrist is popular for first-timers and small designs or sayings. While the wrist is generally a more visible tattoo spot than, say, the ribs or back, this placement allows for easy coverage with foundations or bracelets - making it an ideal choice for those who might be slightly tentative to get inked in a more prominent location. Conversely, we're also partial to the wrist because of its visibility: the conspicuousness of this spot is perfect for tattoos meant to serve as a source of inspiration, support, or reminder.

But don't just take our word for it - check out these gorgeous pieces of wrist ink to get some serious tattoo inspiration.

Nutritionist-Recommended Foods to Suppress Your Appetite Naturally

There may be no magic pill for weight loss, but dietician Julie Upton, MS, RD, of Appetite For Health, stays on top of the science behind taming your appetite naturally. Here, she deciphers recent research and shares six foods that will keep your appetite in check.

Feel like you need some help with hunger management? You're not alone. Most of my clients who struggle with weight loss or maintenance also struggle with hunger. Of course, it's no coincidence - it's hard to walk around feeling famished, particularly when you're faced with the temptation of high-calorie treats everywhere you turn. No wonder willpower wilts!

The good news is that several new studies have identified compounds in certain foods that trigger the release of hormones in the stomach that help you feel full and neurotransmitters in the brain that suppress appetite and reduce cravings. Eating more of these foods can help keep your hunger in check, even as you cut calories to peel off pounds. It's a weight-loss win-win!

Apples

An apple a day may keep extra pounds away, according to research that shows this fruit contains filling soluble fiber as well as ursolic acid, a natural compound that has been found to boost fat burning and which may promote lean muscle mass. In one study, researchers from the University of Iowa note that animals given ursolic acid supplements increased their muscle mass and energy expenditure (or calorie burn). And a study that was done on people and published in the journal Appetite shows that women who added three small apples (total calorie cost: 200) to their diet per day lost a little more than two pounds in 10 weeks - more than dieters who did not include the fruit in their diet.

A medium apple has 95 calories and 6 grams of fiber; a small apple has 75 calories and 3.5 grams of fiber. Be sure to eat the whole apple, as the ursolic acid as well as beneficial antioxidants are concentrated in the skin.

Beans (. . . and peas, lentils, and chickpeas)

Beans, peas, lentils, and chickpeas are a triple threat against hunger because they contain a lot of fiber; are excellent sources of slow-to-digest protein; and have a low glycemic index to keep blood sugar and carbohydrate cravings in check. A recent meta-analysis published in the journal Obesity indicates that people who ate about one cup (5.5 ounces) of legumes felt 31 percent fuller than those who didn't eat these fiber-filled foods. Another study, published recently in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, reports that overweight people who ate a bean-rich diet lost nearly 10 pounds in 16 weeks while simultaneously improving their blood cholesterol levels.

Eggs

Here's some egg-citing news: eating a breakfast that's rich in protein (20 to 30 grams) suppresses ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates your appetite, while elevating peptide YY and GLP-1, two hormones that enhance satiety, according to research. One study in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that when subjects ate eggs for breakfast (versus equal-calorie breakfasts of either cereal or croissants), they consumed up to 438 fewer calories over the entire day. In fact, studies have found that an egg breakfast may help control hunger for a full 24 hours. (To keep blood cholesterol in check, you can enjoy one egg yolk per day and use egg whites for the additional protein they provide.)

Greek Yogurt

Need a reason to go Greek? A landmark study, published in Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases, reports that among more than 8,500 European adults, those who enjoyed a serving or more of European-style yogurt every day (either low fat or full fat, but with less added sugars compared to US varieties) were 20 percent less likely to become overweight and 38 percent less likely to become obese during the six-year follow-up compared to those who ate less than two servings of yogurt each week. How could thick and creamy Greek yogurt whittle your middle? The researchers believe that the protein, calcium, and probiotics may all play a role.

Plain Greek yogurt is your best bet because it's strained to lose the watery whey and some of the natural sugars. It has roughly twice the protein as traditional yogurt (a cup of plain Greek yogurt packs 24 grams of protein, as much as four large eggs) and half the sugar (with only about eight to nine grams of natural dairy sugars and no added sugar).

Mangos

Mangos are not only delicious, but they're also diet-friendly. A study in The Journal of Nutrition and Food Sciences suggests that mango-eaters weighed less and had better diets than those who missed out on mangoes. This stone fruit contains many bioactive ingredients, including mangiferin, a compound that has been shown in preliminary research to help reduce body fat and control blood sugar levels. Research published in the British Journal of Nutrition reports that mango added to the diets of rodents prevented weight gain and improved blood sugar and insulin levels when the animals were fed a high-fat diet to promote weight gain.

A cup of sliced mango has just 100 calories and 3 grams of filling fiber. Say, mmm, mango!

Pistachios (. . . and other nuts)

Go ahead, get a little nutty! Despite being high in calories (160 to 170 calories per ounce), nuts can be very slimming. Studies show that nut lovers are thinner than those who avoid or rarely eat nuts. Why? Nuts keep you fuller longer; their calories aren't fully absorbed by the body, and nuts provide a modest boost to your metabolism, according to research.

In-shell pistachios provide a unique advantage for waistline-watchers. A preliminary study from Eastern Illinois University suggests that people who snacked on in-shell pistachios consumed 41 percent fewer calories than those who ate shelled pistachios. The authors say the empty shells might be a helpful visual cue about how much has been eaten, thereby encouraging you to eat less.

Princess Diana Was the First Member of the British Royal Family to Have Done This

Image Source: Getty / Anwar Hussein

Princess Diana was known for many things during her lifetime - being a great mother to sons Prince Harry and Prince William, her amazing sense of style, and her beautiful smile - but ultimately, she is best remembered for her undying passion for helping others. Diana was a patron of more than 100 causes around the world, some of which Prince William and Prince Harry now champion.

One of the charities in question is the National AIDS Trust. The trust promotes the awareness of AIDS and helps prevent the spread of HIV, and in April 1987, Diana was invited to open the UK's first AIDS ward at Middlesex hospital. During her visit, Diana challenged the notion that HIV/AIDS was passed on by touch when she shook the hand of a dying AIDS patient without wearing gloves. Not only was it a brave and compassionate move, but it also marked the first time a member of the royal family had ever come in contact with a person with HIV or AIDS without wearing any protective gear. "HIV does not make people dangerous to know," Diana explained. "You can shake their hands and give them a hug. Heaven knows they need it."

In the years following, Diana continued to make regular hospital visits and she even brought her sons along with her. Gavin Hart of the National AIDS Trust later told BBC that Diana had done so much to remove the stigma of AIDS. "In our opinion, she was the foremost ambassador for AIDS awareness on the planet and no one can fill her shoes in terms of the work she did."

As a result of Diana's efforts, the cause has also become close to Harry's heart. After wrapping up his exams at Eton College in 2003, the prince took a gap year and traveled to Africa, where he worked with children affected with AIDS. In 2006, he set up his charity Sentebale to support orphans and children affected by the epidemic, and 10 years later, Harry challenged the HIV stigmas when he visited a local HIV clinic in London and got tested live on Facebook. "If you're a man, woman, gay, straight, black, white, whatever - even ginger - why wouldn't you come and have a test?" he said. While the results came out negative, the gesture only showed the strong impact Diana left on her children and all of those who knew her.

Britney Spears Wants the World to See the "Real Unglammed Me"

This Is Why Daenerys May Be the Last Mother of Dragons

More than any other season, this seventh season of Game of Thrones illustrated just how powerful dragons can be in this universe. Daenerys's "children" are instrumental in the Loot Train Battle and in the rescue mission beyond the Wall. And there's no denying that the fallen Viserion is proving to be an invaluable asset to the Night King as he marches South. These remarkable creatures can win wars, bring down the Wall, and, perhaps even return the Targaryens to power. But are Daenerys's dragons the last great beasts that will ever fly over Westeros? Upon their birth, the Mother of Dragons bestows her children with male names, but that doesn't necessarily mean that none of them are female.

There is much debate about dragons and how they reproduce, particularly in the books. In A Feast For Crows, Sam says, "Dragons are neither male nor female, Barth saw the truth of that, but now one and now the other, as changeable as flame." However, some dragons in the past did seem to have a fixed sex and were referred to by male and female names. Even if one of Daenerys's children has the capacity to become female, the nuances of dragon reproduction aren't well known.

Many believe the only way to hatch a dragon is through fire and blood magic - which is exactly how Daenerys returns dragons to the world at the end of season one. The hatching of Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion comes at a great expense. Both the body of Khal Drogo and the witch Mirri Maz Duur are burned upon the pyre, and Daenerys herself goes into the flames as well.

The khaleesi's dragon eggs were not the last ones in the world. In fact, dragon eggs are considered to be a valuable form of currency, with people in Westeros and beyond willing to pay large sums to get their hands on even the most ancient of eggs. In the books, there's even rumored to be a cache of eggs hidden beneath Dragonstone. Having a dragon egg doesn't guarantee a dragon, though.

Even with other eggs in existence, the chances of more dragons hatching are slim. Magic seems to have returned to Westeros thanks in part to Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion, but just because there's more magic in the world doesn't mean more dragons will follow. The ritual sacrifice is a high price to pay to birth the beautiful creatures, and it may be something only Targaryens can do. (If it's not, then you can bet Cersei's mad scientist, Qyburn, will try to figure out how to give his queen some dragons of her own.)

On the upside, now that Jon is confirmed to be a Targaryen, the former ruling dynasty has the potential to grow, and with Drogon and Rhaegal still alive and eggs scattered around the known world, the potential for more dragons is always there. But even if Jon and Daenerys have children, unless someone figures out a less tragic way to hatch dragon eggs, Jon and Dany's offspring aren't guaranteed to spend their childhoods learning how to train their very own massive pets. At this late stage of the game, Daenerys's "children" will likely be the only dragons we ever see take flight over Westeros.

This 1997 Clip Perfectly Shows How Princess Diana Changed the Narrative About Modern Feminism

In the 20 years since the shocking and tragic death of Princess Diana in August 1997, people have continued to be obsessed with every facet of her life - and for good reason. The 36-year-old princess inspired people with her charity work that her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, still carry out, as well as her powerful response to Prince Charles's affair. And as a 1997 clip from BBC Newsnight shows, one of Princess Diana's most lasting legacies included making women around the world feel like they, too, could be empowered and independent, even as they raised children and were married.

The 1997 clip, which features then journalist but now famous chef Nigella Lawson, explains how Princess Diana's attitude toward her marriage, her children, and even herself "epitomized the modern, self-invented woman." Lawson adds that "for many women, this showed that times really had changed, and that a wife, even one as traditionally brought up as Diana, was no longer prepared to play a subservient role, or even pretend to do so." You can watch the full clip ahead.

Princess Diana, who was so forthcoming about her flaws and struggles, still evoked a fairy-tale image for many women - creating a new version of feminism that was both relatable as well as aspirational. "Her struggles with her own appearance, her difficulties with her body image, and her bulimia made a huge number of women identify with her," Lawson said. "It made her seem as if she had the same worries and problems as the rest of us, as indeed she did. The fact that such a great beauty could feel the same things, made in turn, ordinary women feel better about themselves." It's become even clearer since Princess Diana's death just how much she meant to women around the world.
