Everything You Need to Know About Hurricane Irma

Less than a week after Hurricane Harvey - and before the devastating storm has even fully cleared out of the continental United States - another massive tropical storm brewing in the Atlantic, Irma, has been upgraded to a hurricane. And Hurricane Irma might be headed our way.

While meteorologists are predicting that the storm is at the very least a week away from landfall, hurricane expert Dan Kottlowski told Accuweather that "Irma is likely to become a major hurricane and could become a Category 4 well before it reaches the Lesser Anteilles." We'll continue to monitor developments as and when they happen and update this story, but here's what we know as of Aug. 31:

  • Hurricane Irma is currently a Category 3 storm, with winds reaching 115 mph. It's moving slowly, though, in the north-northwest direction at around 12 miles per hour. Here's what the wind speeds look like as of 4:30 on Aug. 31:
  • It's hard to say where the storm will head at this stage - models typically can't predict a storm's full trajectory when it's more than a week away - so experts will be able to speak to the expected landfall at some point over the holiday weekend. Research states that storms which form close to the equator - specifically at the Intertropical Convergence Zone, or ITCZ - are likely to develop a higher amount of strength and velocity, so we'll definitely be keeping an eye on the area. NOAA is currently tracking the direction of the hurricane as follows:

This is a developing story and will be updated as new information becomes available.

The 1 Thing You Should Never Put on a Sandwich, According to the Sandwich King Himself

The perfect sandwich is a delicate art, and if there's anyone who's perfected it, it's Food Network chef and sandwich king Jeff Mauro. Mauro spilled his sandwich dos and don'ts to us, along with his thoughts on fatherhood, cooking for kids, and the perfect sandwich bread. Keep reading to learn his best advice.

POPSUGAR: What's the ultimate breakfast sandwich?
Jeff Mauro: Perfectly griddled sausage patty, everything bagel, veggie cream cheese, and pickled jalapeños, of course.

PS: What's the worst thing anyone could put on a sandwich?
JM: Mealy tomatoes.

PS: What's the best sandwich bread ever?
JM: The answer is NONE. Each sandwich has at least one appropriate bread to act as the vehicle.

PS: Does your son eat what you cook? How do you get him to eat vegetables?
JM: Kind of. He always eats the protein we make, and starch (usually sweet potatoes) and veggies. He's still not eating salads or asparagus, but we've always fed him well-seasoned and well-balanced food. I guess the trick is, and mind you, I only have one kid, to really not give [kids] a choice. They have to at least taste everything you make.

PS: What's your ultimate Father's Day meal?
JM: My ideal Father's Day meal is a big grilled beef tenderloin. Pair that with tons of mushrooms, something cheesy, and lots of Mark West wine.

PS: What's the most fun thing about being a chef who is a dad?
JM: Taking pride in the fact that my boy knows and respects good food and where it comes from and what it takes to make it. Now with my restaurant Pork & Mindy's in Chicago, he can come hang out with me on the weekends and see food from that end of the business. Plus, I'm proud that my boy can crack an egg like a champ.

JAY-Z Pulls the Ultimate Husband Move, and Leads a "Happy Birthday" Serenade For Beyoncé

Sept. 4 marks Beyoncé's 36th birthday, but the singer got a head start on the festivities at Budweiser's Made in America Festival in Philadelphia on Sunday. During JAY-Z's headlining set, Queen Bey got a special shout-out from her husband as he told the crowd, "Shout out to Beyoncé. Beautiful Bey is in the house tonight. Happy Birthday my love." And things only got sweeter from there. JAY-Z then led the audience into singing "Happy Birthday" to Beyoncé, who was spotted dancing in the stands with pal Michelle Williams.

On Monday morning, Beyoncé's mom, Tina Lawson, posted an Instagram photo of her and Beyoncé hanging out at the festival together, along with a heartfelt birthday message. Still, Sam and Caitriona often exchange sweet looks at red carpet events, and Sam frequently shares photos of the pair hanging out on Instagram. Take a look at their most loving moments before Outlander returns on Sept. 10.

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Make Scrambled Eggs

One of the most basic recipes everyone learns is scrambled eggs, but the truth is perfectly scrambled eggs are a lot trickier than they seem. Much like the classic omelet, scrambling eggs is one cooking method on which many chefs differ. To whisk in a bowl or in the pan? To add dairy or to not? Minor tweaks can make huge differences in something so basic, and we guarantee you'll want to change up your scrambled egg routine with tips from these experts - they know a thing or two about recipe developing. Here's how some of our favorite chefs scramble their eggs (we're not kidding when we say Gordon Ramsay's method is a game changer).

Alton Brown: Whisk With Whole Milk

Simple yet effective is the name of the game in Alton Brown's scrambled egg recipe. Adding whole milk isn't his only tip, though. "Odds are you're going to be serving these on a plate. If so, I strongly suggest you park an ovensafe one in a low oven or in hot water while you're cooking. Cold plates suck the heat right out of food," his recipe description reads.

Anthony Bourdain: Skip the Dairy

Anthony Bourdain doesn't condone adding milk or cream to scrambled eggs - or anything, for that matter. "I just don't feel that milk or cream adds anything. I believe that a scrambled egg is principally about the egg," the Appetites author says in a video about the best way to cook scrambled eggs. Anthony's other pro tip is to be careful not to overbeat the eggs; you want some white parts remaining. He cooks them in a heated pan with warm, foaming butter and carefully pushes them around in a figure-eight pattern to create soft folds.

Giada De Laurentiis: Frittata Cupcakes

Giada's preferred method of scrambling eggs involves a mini muffin tin - she likes to make frittata cupcakes. She told POPSUGAR in an interview, "I love making my little cupcakes - frittata cupcakes. I just stick whatever's left in the fridge. Whatever it is that was from the night before, whether it's leftover pasta, leftover meat, leftover vegetables . . . Another favorite is lox, scrambled eggs, and peas - for a little color. For a Sunday morning, it's one of my favorite go-to breakfasts."

Gordon Ramsay: Low and Slow (With a Secret Ingredient)

Gordon Ramsay's scrambled eggs recipe is one everyone must try at least once. The finished product looks more like custard, and thanks to his cooking method and a secret ingredient, they're melt-in-your-mouth good.

Paula Deen: With Water and Vidalia Onions

"We can't operate without Vidalia onions around here," Paula Deen said of her scrambled eggs in an interview with POPSUGAR. In addition to caramelized onions, Paula adds a splash of water to her eggs. "Water doesn't make it as tough as milk," she says. The real kicker, though, is to scramble the eggs in both butter and bacon fat to get the most flavor.

Chrissy Teigen: "Cheesy" Eggs, Hold the Cheese

Chrissy Teigen swears by her method of creating "cheesy" eggs without the cheese, thanks to her secret ingredient: heavy cream. Her tip for getting them as creamy as possible with no browned spots? "Don't stop gently stirring and scraping (edges and all) for more than a few seconds!"

The Pioneer Woman: Smoked Salmon and Chives

Like most Pioneer Woman recipes, this one sounds delightful. Calling them the "best scrambled eggs ever", Ree Drummond suggests sprinkling in chopped smoked salmon after the eggs are cooked and then garnishing with chopped fresh chives.

Mario Batali: Topped With Shaved Truffle

Leave it to Mario Batali to bring some serious culinary chops to such a basic recipe. To make scrambled eggs special, Mario suggests adding mascarpone or parmesan cheese, but to make them "spectacular," garnish with shaved truffle.

Katie Lee: Back to Basics

Food Network host Katie Lee has a strictly back-to-basics approach to scrambled eggs. She melts butter in a skillet and cooks the eggs low and slow. "It is important to keep the heat low when cooking eggs so as not to burn them," Katie told POPSUGAR in an interview.

Uh-Oh, You Might Not Be Able to Visit This IRL Game of Thrones Spot Anymore

With the unparalleled popularity of Game of Thrones, it's no surprise that fans are flocking to all the filming locations used on the show. One such spot is the beautiful city of Dubrovnik in Croatia, which plays home to King's Landing, the capital of Westeros. But the local government is not happy with the influx of tourists in the city, so the mayor wants to stop letting so many of them in.

Dubrovnik's mayor, Mato Franković, wants to drastically cut down on the number of people being allowed into the city at a time. While Unesco recommends allowing up to 8,000 people a day inside the city walls, Franković wants to cap it at 4,000, The Telegraph reported.

GOT tourism certainly boosted Dubrovnik's economy, but Franković is concerned that the quality of the city is rapidly declining because of it. To combat that, he's starting by canceling cruise-ship stops to Dubrovnik's port and imposing limits on tour operators running day trips to the city. While he is aware that it will lose the city money, he insists in the long run that it will prevail. "We will lose money in the next two years - a million Euros maybe, by cutting the number of tourists - but in the future we will gain much more. We deserve to be a top-quality destination," he told The Telegraph.

How I Turned My Ikea Couch Into a $10,000 Designer Sofa

I don't believe you grow out of Ikea past the age of 25. I love the Swedish brand's minimalist aesthetic. And since I like to mix things up, the price point works for a design commitment-phobe like me. Despite my Ikea love, after three years, my Karlstad sofa started to look a bit sad. Since the low-profile sofa fit perfectly in my open living room, I decided to give it a designer-couch makeover instead of replacing it.

This Raleigh Sectional from Design Within Reach (pictured above) served as my inspiration. The walnut frame matched the midcentury vibe I strive for, and the light fabric color would add to the airy look in my bright living space. That sofa retails for as much as $10,000. I knew I could DIY the look for less. Read on for how I did it.

Be a Part of Our 4-Week Beginner Bodyweight Challenge

If you're completely new to strength training, doing bodyweight exercises is a great starting point. Since you don't need any equipment, you can do them anywhere, anytime. This four-week challenge incorporates six basic moves designed to target all your major muscle groups.

Here are instructions for the six different moves, followed by a four-week plan. Follow the plan and adjust it as needed according to your schedule and ability level.

The Intense Push-Up Variation That'll Change the Way Your Abs Look

Push-ups have got to be my all-time favorite upper-body exercise since they are so effective at targeting your chest and shoulders. There are so many variations to this basic exercise, so here's another one to add to your routine. Bonus: this move helps define your core, especially your obliques, the muscles on the sides of your torso that cinch your waist.

  • Come into plank position (top of a push-up), with your hands under your shoulders, and your body in one straight line. If you can't do a push-up this way, just lower your knees to the floor (as shown in the second half of the video).
  • As you bend your elbows out to the side and lower your torso toward the floor, bend your left knee and touch it to your left elbow.
  • As you straighten your arms, come back to plank position with your left foot next to your right. Now lower your torso down and touch your right knee to your right elbow. Then return back to plank position.
  • This counts as one repetition. Complete as many as you can, then stretch out your lower back and shoulders in Child's Pose for five breaths and then stretch out your pecs by doing Seated Heart Opener for five breaths.

If You Smoke Pot to Reduce Anxiety, It Turns Out There's a Perfect Amount To Use

Marijuana is being legalized for recreational use throughout the US, but how much should you smoke? Our friends at YourTango researched the perfect amount to reduce anxiety without inducing paranoia.

Smoke on!

I smoke pot.

I smoke it for three reasons.

I smoke it to help manage my crippling anxiety and panic disorders; I smoke it to help get me to sleep; and I smoke it to have the best sex of my life.

I don't smoke pot because I'm a lazy stoner whose only passion is Doritos. I don't smoke it to seem cool or get totally out of my mind like some wild co-ed.

I do it because it is one of very few things that can alleviate some of the major anxiety symptoms from which I suffer.

While I know that there are people who enjoy using marijuana suppositories in their vaginas, and marijuana lube to help loosen them up, I'm pretty old fashioned when it comes to how I introduce marijuana into my body: I use a vaporizer.

Related: 3 Peaceful Ways to Combat the Stress of Your Divorce

My reasons for smoking marijuana are not unique. A Yahoo News-Marist survey found 37% of participants cited this stress-relieving benefit, compared to 19% who turn to marijuana for pain relief, 16% who use it "to have fun" and 3% who report its effectiveness both as a sleep aid and a sexual booster.

I avoided smoking marijuana for a really long time. A huge part of why I avoided it was for the same reason I have avoided other illegal recreational drugs. It wasn't out of fear of being caught or arrested. It's because I am convinced that the drugs will trigger a panic attack in me, or worse case scenario, make me so anxious and fraught that I never get normal again.

A lot of people smoke weed just to relax, and I know a fair amount of anxious people who credit medical marijuana with helping them live with and manage their symptoms.

Related: Terrifying: This Is What Happens to Your Body When You're Stressed

That said, I have also heard horror stories about my anxious friends having serious panic attacks after smoking weed. Everyone talks about finding a happy medium, managing your anxiety without triggering a panic attack, but to me when it comes to my brain's chemistry, it seemed a little foolhardy to play a guessing game when it came to how much weed I should be ingesting.

I wanted science, I wanted hard answers. However, eventually, with the advice of my therapist and a licensed doctor, I realized that trying a low dose of marijuana medicinally might hold the answer for me. I wasn't sure what low dose meant, but luckily because I saw a doctor, the numbers were taken care of for me.

That hasn't kept me from keeping up with all the news about pot for anxiety, though. Lately, there's been a lot more legitimate scientific research about weed and how it can affect the anxious mind. A recent study gave different groups varying amounts of weed and put them in a high-stress, two-hour interview environment and here's what they found:

"Compared to those who took the placebo, the 7.5 mg group experienced less distress in the course of the TSST and were less likely to view it as 'threatening and challenging.' The stress they experienced also didn't last long. Things didn't go so well for the 12.5 mg cohort, however, who reported 'increased negative mood' before and throughout the test; they were also more disposed to find the task threatening and challenging, even before they had begun. Finally, they demonstrated impaired performance on the test itself."

Related: 12 Things Only People With Anxiety Can Teach You About Life

So there you have it. If you want a real number to hold on to, 7.5 mg of THC is all that is required to make a person feel relaxed.

To put that number in real terms, smoking half an average-sized joint, a person will consume 33 to 39 milligrams of THC. Translation: Just a couple of puffs should do you. So don't go overboard.

If you're a person like me who loves the positive effects of marijuana on your anxiety and your sex life, it turns out that less is absolutely more. Obviously, this is just one study, but if you've held back from pot as an option like I did, you might find news like this super exciting.

This Footage of a Utah Nurse Screaming For Help as a Cop Manhandles Her Will Leave You Livid

As the head nurse at Utah University Hospital's burn unit, it's Alex Wubbels's job to make sure hospital protocol and the rule of law is always followed on her watch. But on July 26, it was her brave refusal to abandon those duties, even for law enforcement, that resulted in a senselessly violent episode that was all caught on video.

It all started when Detective Jeff Payne requested to draw blood from an unconscious patient in Wubbels's unit. The Salt Lake City Tribune reported that Payne, a trained police phlebotomist, had originally been sent to collect this particular patient's blood to conduct a substance level check that would clear the driver of any wrong-doing following a collision that resulted in another individual's death. But when Wubbels calmly explained to the detective that it would be out of line with both hospital protocol and the law to do so, he became increasingly agitated. Full video footage on Deseret News shows that Payne threatened to arrest her if she refused to allow him to leave with a blood sample. Standing her ground, Wubbels got on the phone with her supervisor, who again confirmed that no blood should be drawn from a patient who is unable to provide consent.

From there, the standoff between the nurse and detective turned violent. Wubbels's supervisor can be heard telling Detective Payne, "Sir, you're making a huge mistake because you're threatening a nurse." Payne appears to completely lose it after that remark, as he quickly moves to grab Wubbels immediately following the off-camera comment and angrily puts the nurse into handcuffs as she sobs. The most startling point in the footage, however, can be seen at the end when Detective Payne forcefully drags Wubbels into a police car as she screams "help me" to bystanders.

According to the Salt Lake City Tribune, the Salt Lake City police department is now conducting an internal investigation into the incident, though Payne has only been suspended from their blood-draw program and is currently still on the police department staff. As for Wubbels, she has not taken legal action against the department just yet, but says she is, however, sharing her story in hopes that it will shine a light on the need for better relationships between medical professionals and police officers.

A Joker Movie Is on the Way, and Warner Bros. Reportedly Wants to Cast Leonardo DiCaprio

After the critical disaster that was Suicide Squad hit theaters in 2016, many fans were shocked and annoyed that Batman's archenemy, the Joker, barely appears in the movie at all despite the character being featured heavily in the film's promotional campaign. Even Jared Leto, who played the classic supervillain, voiced his own frustration at the decision to cut a lot of the Joker's scenes. In what appears to be a direct response to that (or just another way to milk the DC Extended Universe machine), Warner Bros. has announced that a new stand-alone movie about his backstory is on the way. Unfortunately, not everyone in the Batman fandom is on board with the idea.

There are multiple reasons for the pushback. In the right hands, a Joker origin story could be great, but the studio's choice to tap Todd Phillips to cowrite and potentially direct isn't sitting well with fans, since Phillips's previous directing credits include mostly raunchy comedies like The Hangover, Due Date, and Old School. Lending some gravity to the project is Scott Silver (8 Mile, The Fighter), who is attached to cowrite the script with Phillips, which finds the Joker in Gotham City in the early 1980s.

The movie's reception will also depend heavily on the actor who takes up the villain's iconic mantle. Since Martin Scorsese is reportedly producing, rumors are now swirling that the studio is eyeing longtime Scorsese collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio for the role. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "there's no offer for DiCaprio, and sources say Scorsese's deal to produce isn't even done yet." So the chances that the Oscar winner will play the Joker are slim to none, at this point. Despite the odds, the rumors of a potential DiCaprio casting alone are enough to send the message that Warner Bros. is trying to put the Joker film on the same prestigious level of Christopher Nolan's award-worthy Dark Knight franchise.

Fans have already expressed worry over the studio's choice to recast Leto and the fact that the movie is being made instead of another female-led superhero (or supervillain) outing. It's obviously too early to judge the Joker film, but based on the DCEU's recent history, fans are right to be nervous.

10 Aluminum-Free Deodorants That Actually Keep You Stink Free

You can't talk about natural deodorants without a quick lesson in B.O. 101. First you need to know the difference between a deodorant and an antiperspirant. An antiperspirant has chemicals like aluminum to stop sweating altogether. The aluminum salts plug the sweat glands, preventing perspiration. On the other hand, a deodorant masks and neutralizes odor. But where does the stink come from in the first place? When the glands in your armpits emit sweat, the liquid interacts with the bacteria in the area to emit unsavory smells.

Natural deodorants use essential oils like tea tree and witch hazel to curb the bacteria. Some also have other less harmful minerals like zinc ricinoleate and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to keep the underarm area dry without stopping sweat altogether. In addition to getting rid of aluminum, most are also paraben free and safe for sensitive skin. If you're thinking about giving up antiperspirant, start with these 10 formulas that actually keep the stink at bay.

Pittsburgh Will Be First US Airport to Allow Nonflyers Through Security Again

Starting Sept. 5, the Pittsburgh, PA, airport will start allowing nonflyers through the security checkpoint for the first time since the Sept. 11 attacks. Everyone will still have to go through the same security measures as usual, but it will no longer be required to have a boarding pass to get through.

Those wanting to go through security but not fly, whether it's to eat, shop, or be with loved ones, will just need to get a myPITpass inside the airport. The pass, which requires an ID to obtain, will grant you access through security on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

A spokesperson for the TSA told Travel + Leisure that the agency is staffed to "handle the additional influx of people" and that they do not anticipate "any impact on checkpoint wait times." Also, during peak travel times, it's possible the myPITpass privileges may be revoked to make sure the actual travelers can get through security in a timely manner.

And while this is an exciting win for the Pittsburgh airport, there are currently no future plans to open up more US airports to the public at this time, according to reports from USA Today.

We Are Seriously Screaming Over Primark's (Very Affordable!) Disney Collection

Caviar Lips Are the Crazy-Cool New Trend Going Viral on Instagram

There's no shortage of creative lip art on Instagram, but the latest trend we're spotting takes unexpected inspiration from a fancy delicacy: caviar.

Consider caviar lips to be an evolution of the glitter lips trend we all loved last year. It also features a textured finish, but the look is made using caviar-like 3D embellishments such as tiny beads, pearls, or sequins (not actual caviar, thank goodness). We most recently spotted it on makeup artist Vlada Haggerty's page, but other makeup artists have been experimenting with similar 3D embellishments on lips since earlier this year. As for how the little "caviar" pieces stick on, makeup artist Greta Agazzi shared that she's used both MAC Lipglass and NYX Glitter Primer as bases.

Is the lip trend practical to wear to work? Nope. Will you be able to eat a burger with tiny "caviar" beads on? Maybe not. But is this makeup a mesmerizing work of art? Absolutely. Get more caviar lips inspiration ahead.

Save the Pikas! These Pikachu Look-Alikes Are in Serious Trouble

Behold the cutest residents in all of North America: pikas. These tiny balls of harmless brown fluff live in the western mountain ranges of the US, spending their days munching on a variety of plants and blessing the internet with extreme levels of cuteness. In other words, pikas are a national treasure.

But I'm heartbroken to share that these are dark times for our furry friends. According to a recent study published in PLOS One journal, climate change is to blame. Researchers have found that pikas are rapidly disappearing from their habitat in California's Sierra Nevada mountain range, where rising heat is threatening to all but eliminate the highly temperature-sensitive species.

Pikas typically live in the lower parts of mountain ranges, where it has historically been cool enough for them to thrive. But as temperatures climb, pikas are forced to climb to higher and higher elevation levels in search of cooler areas. Unfortunately, it now seems that no matter how high these pikas climb, they're unable to find temperatures cool enough, causing them to overheat and die.

While pikas do exist in habitats outside of the Sierra Nevada mountains, the loss of this area as a suitable home for the pika is a worrying indicator of the global-warming-induced problems we have in store. For now, we have to do everything in our power to save the precious pikas and every other four-legged friend who is depending on us to act on climate change. Ahead, bask in the adorable glory of the pika and be reminded of the little lives at stake in the fight against global warming.

50 of Mariah Carey's Sexiest Outfits Since 1993

Mariah Carey might have been in the music business for the past 27 years, but don't you dare to think for a second that means she's not still showing off her curves and beautiful legs any chance she gets (on the red carpet, in one of her music videos, and even when out and about in New York City). If it wasn't Mariah, we would think she probably already is, but we know better . . . especially after taking a deep dive into 24 years of her sexiest fashion moments.

Can You Spot the Kid Drowning in This Public Pool Before the Lifeguard Does?

A day at the pool isn't all fun and games - and no one knows that better than the lifeguard.

Drowning can happen in the blink of an eye and even when people are within arm's reach of the victim. As much as we think we might notice someone struggling in the water, drowning is often a silent killer.

Thankfully, in this real-life video taken at a public wave pool, a boy is spotted drowning within seconds by a resourceful lifeguard - likely well before anyone watching this footage, even knowing what to search for, could spot him.

The lifeguard sounds her whistle, swims out to the boy who lost hold of his floating ring, and carries him to safety.

One important factor to note is that this video includes sound, but you never hear the boy's cries for help. That's because when someone is drowning, contrary to what many assume, they can't call out - there isn't time to inhale or exhale. Often, they aren't able to wave their arms, which was a lucky ability for the child at this particular pool.

So can you find him?

14 Ways Real People Got Their Raises

Feel like it's time that your employer ups the ante on payday? If you've been working at your job for awhile and think it's time to talk about getting a raise, check out these suggestions by Redditors for the best ways to go about getting the extra cash you want.

  • Make sure that it's a realistic request before you ask for it. You can ask for a raise if you've been with the company for a solid period of time or if your duties have significantly changed or increased enough to truly merit a raise. If you ask for one without support for your request, it will seem unprofessional.
  • Approach the conversation like it's an interview. Identify whom you need to be speaking with, and schedule a time to talk with him or her. Be as professional as possible, even if you have a more familiar relationship with them.
  • Lay out your contributions to the company since you've been there. Reddit user ampersand_bananas advises you to "connect the actions you've completed with the positive results of the company." This will help make it clear why you are valuable, especially if you use numbers and specific examples wherever possible.
  • Indicate how your role has changed over time and why that merits more compensation. Emphasize new responsibilities that you've taken on since you were hired or since your last raise. A great way to word this, from Reddit user CitizenSam, is to say something along the lines of "with my new, added responsibilities, my current rate really isn't appropriate anymore. I need a salary that's more commensurate with the type of duties I have now."
  • Emphasize your reliability. Bring up examples regarding your attendance record, your eagerness to fill in for someone who was out, and your general reliability to perform what is expected of you daily.
  • Be direct but not confrontational. Avoid being too pushy, but also make a strong case for yourself with confidence.
  • Have a number in mind. "Be prepared to offer a suggested raise amount. They may not ask, but have something - something reasonable," advised Reddit user kcell. Have a number in mind for how much you want the raise to be, and expect to negotiate down from that number - it's always a good idea to aim higher than you think you need to.
  • State, with facts rather than opinions, what you have done for the company. Avoid words like "I think" and "I feel," and instead be firm and informative.
  • Bring up times you went above and beyond. Reddit user nyudo2 says to "focus on the additional tasks you do" as well as on your efficiency. If you have completed any extra training or done anything past the regular call of duty for your position, make sure to bring up those instances.
  • Avoid bringing up personal reasons for the raise. You may have just moved, just had a new addition to the family, or have extra bills to pay, but your employer does not want or need to hear about this. One user made the point that you weren't hired "because you needed money, you were hired because you provided something of value to the company."
  • Be cautious when bringing up other opportunities that you have seen or have been offered. This can sometimes be beneficial, but it can also make it seem like your current job is expendable to you, and if your boss won't budge on a raise, he or she may be OK with letting you go. Basically, you shouldn't threaten to leave unless you're really OK with doing so, if it came down to it.
  • Accept an offer for a temporary, or "trial," raise if you are given one. A temporary raise can be a great stepping stone to receiving a full raise - just make sure that you work hard in the interim to prove that you deserve it. Be open to other additional compensation, like more vacation days or extra job perks, if an increase in salary is nonnegotiable at the time.
  • Express positive feelings and feedback about your position. Indicate that you like your position and want to continue to be challenged and grow within the company.
  • Follow up. Reddit user justagreewithme reflected that a common hurdle he has experienced when seeking a raise was the indefinite "put off to another time," adding that "you cannot allow them to do this." If they need to think things over or speak to HR, he suggests that you find out a specific date or time for an answer to be given. Be sure to follow through and contact your employer if you don't hear back by the deadline discussed.

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Make Chicken Breasts

It's no secret that boneless, skinless chicken breasts aren't the most exciting ingredient, but they're certainly one of the most popular among home cooks. If you're feeling totally uninspired by your usual chicken recipes, allow these chef-approved tips to get you out of your rut. Here's how some of the best Food Network personalities and more of our favorite celebrity cooks transform their chicken breasts.

Alton Brown: Pounded Thin

Alton Brown's recipe is for chicken kiev, a popular dish that involves pounding the chicken breasts thin before stuffing them with herbed butter, coating them in breadcrumbs, and frying them. Alton's pro tip is to refrigerate the rolled-up, stuffed chicken breasts for at least an hour so they stay intact while being fried, so you don't have to worry about pesky butcher's twine.

Ina Garten: Lemon on Lemon

Ina's lemon chicken breasts recipe has a five-star rating out of more than 600 reviews, and it's easy to see why. She makes sure there's maximum lemon flavor by baking the chicken breasts with plenty of zest, juice, and wedges.

Chrissy Teigen: With a Brick

Yes, an actual brick. Once you try the technique in Chrissy Teigen's brick chicken recipe, you might never go back.

Rachael Ray: Spinach and Mushroom Stuffed

Rachael Ray's spinach- and mushroom-stuffed chicken is further proof that stuffing your food is always a good idea. A filling made of spinach, mushrooms, ricotta, parmesan, and garlic results in chicken that's anything but bland.

Giada De Laurentiis: Piccata

Giada's foolproof chicken piccata is the ultimate Italian-style chicken dinner. With a short list of impactful ingredients (butter, lemon juice, chicken stock, and capers), you can make your own restaurant-worthy chicken.

Ted Allen: Parmesan-Crusted

When in doubt, add parmesan cheese. Chopped host Ted Allen recommends baking the chicken in a crunchy crust of panko breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese.

Selena Gomez Follows a Very Important Skincare Rule You Should Know Well

With her famously glowing complexion, Selena Gomez has women everywhere trying to uncover her beauty secrets. As you might expect, she splurges on top-quality products, but you might be surprised to learn that she also still has to deal with skin woes, just like we do.

Selena is known for making her skincare routine a high priority. Inspired by her grandmother, Selena has worked to take care of her skin from a young age, using the same Olay products that both her grandma and her mom used. She also regularly uses a cult favorite, the Clarisonic brush and cleanser, to wash her face in the morning. And as she told Elle, she's just like the rest of us: she can't sleep with her makeup on or she'll wake up with breakouts.

In 2016, Selena gave Allure the scoop on how she and her makeup artist keep her face looking fabulous throughout a concert: "My makeup artist mixes foundation with moisturizer to keep it extremely light, and she only does one layer. Also, she usually focuses only on the eyes so that it's a strong, bold eye and soft lip, or we make it the opposite."

Off stage, Selena often preps for events with makeup artist Hung Vanngo, who revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he prefers a minimalist look, as "it will always make you look radiant, young, and not overly done." Some of his favorite products for creating Selena's fresh, glowy face include Chanel Vitalumiere Foundation in 40 Beige, Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Custard, Nars Light Reflecting Pressed Setting Powder, and Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Killer Cheekbones.

He also uses moisturizing skincare products, like Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream and Creamy Eye Treatment With Avocado, to maintain Selena's dewy complexion. "Selena and I work well together because we both think beautiful skin can almost be as good as makeup," he said.

Mark Zuckerberg Pens Powerful Post Defending DACA and the Dreamers

Back in February, President Donald Trump said he would "show great heart" when it came to the status of the Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program - and the 800,000 immigrants who are currently protected under it. However, despite pleas from 2,000 government leaders and officials around the country, the president might end the DACA program anyway. On Aug. 31, a new call to protect the young immigrants, known as Dreamers, came in the form of a letter signed by 300 business leaders, including a personal Facebook post from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Signed by CEOs from Airbnb, Lyft, Netflix, Apple, and Google, the letter was posted on FWD.us, an organization dedicated to immigration reform. In it, the business leaders write to the president, as well as House Speaker Paul Ryan, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Senate Minority Leader Senator Charles E. Schumer. The letter states, "As entrepreneurs and business leaders, we are concerned about new developments in immigration policy that threaten the future of young undocumented immigrants brought to America as children." It goes on to express how much Dreamers have contributed to society and to subject them to the threat of deportation if DACA is ended would be extremely detrimental to the economy and our society. It ends with, "We call on President Trump to preserve the DACA program. We call on Congress to pass the bipartisan DREAM Act or legislation that provides these young people raised in our country the permanent solution they deserve." A separate statement from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also expresses Nadella's support of DACA and the Dreamers. POPSUGAR cofounders Lisa and Brian Sugar also joined hundreds of business leaders and entrepreneurs - including Zuckerberg - in signing an additional open letter opposing the termination of DACA, which was released later the same night.

In a separate Facebook post on Aug. 31, Zuckerberg wrote why he "stand[s] with the Dreamers." He not only wants Trump to keep DACA alive but for Congress to also pass the DREAM Act of 2017 to ensure the protection of the Dreamers. "These young people represent the future of our country and our economy," Zuckerberg wrote. "They are our friends and family, students and young leaders in our communities. I hope you will join us in speaking out." You can read the full post ahead.

I stand with the Dreamers -- the young people brought to our country by their parents. Many have lived here as long as...

Posted by Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday, August 31, 2017

According to a report from Fox News, Trump is expected to end DACA. Though White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a press briefing on Aug. 31 that DACA is still "under review," many do not believe Trump will "show great heart" to these young immigrants.

This story was updated on Sept. 3 to reflect the fact that Lisa and Brian Sugar signed the Open Letter From Leaders of American Industry on DACA.

All Food From Chinese Restaurants Contains MSG and More Secrets Revealed by an Employee

If you've always wanted to know what really goes on inside a Chinese restaurant, you're in luck. A restaurant employee recently did a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) entitled Your Typical Chinese Restaurant Employee, and he answered a lot of users' questions that touched on everything except the exact recipes (some things have to remain a secret!). He wrote, "I am Chinese. Parents are Chinese. Parents own a typical take out Chinese food restaurant. I have worked there almost all my life and I know almost all the ins and outs." Curious about his insider secrets? Read on for some of the standout questions and answers, and then catch up on the whole AMA here.

1. The secret to authentic Chinese food is the sauce.

Someone mentioned that they try to make Chinese food at home but it's never nearly as good - not even "as good as the worst Chinese takeout." Turns out, the major difference is the sauce.

2. Using a wok makes a difference.

Another reason your homemade stir fries and lo mein might not taste authentic is that using a wok is far superior to a regular skillet. "The ability to flash cook in a wok makes a big difference believe it or not."

3. North American Chinese food is cheaper.

4. The secret to the chicken in dishes like General Tso's is the breading.

5. Yes, many restaurants really do use the same images for the menu.

6. Don't believe a restaurant if it says it doesn't have MSG . . . it's already in soy sauce and many other sauces.

7. The best thing to order is anything Mongolian style. At least, that's this guy's personal favorite.

8. The one thing you should NEVER order is . . . fries.
