These Are the Exact Beauty Products Madelaine Petsch Wears as Cheryl on Riverdale
I watch Riverdale because I have the hots for Cole Sprouse, the plots are riveting (who the heck is Betty's brother?!), and gosh-dang is Madelaine Petsch gorgeous. The actress who plays Cheryl Blosson is the most exciting breakout beauty star I've seen in years. Whether I am obsessing about her perfect cherry-red lips and matching hair, or praying I can get my skin to look as poreless as hers, she compels my attention every time she comes on the screen.
To find out exactly which products she uses, I interviewed Riverdale's lead makeup artist, Erin Mackenzie. She shared the exact product lineup she uses on Madelaine for the show:
"Cheryl is a masterpiece!" she said. "We use an array of products to create her signature look, starting with NARS foundation and Tarte concealer with translucent powder to set. A combination of Lise Watier and It Cosmetics bronzers to sculpt and shape her face with MAC Blushbaby to give that perfect flush color. Lorac pro eye-shadow palette to naturally define her eyes with Benefit mascara to finish them off. MAC Strawberry blonde brow pencil to shape those great brows, and, of course, Lime Crime Red Velvet to create those PERFECT lips." (Sounds like Erin is an Ulta shopper.)
We also got into which products give Madelaine her porcelain skin.
"Madelaine is incredible with keeping her skincare regime on point, allowing us a great canvas to work off of," Erin said. "It's a must with the long shooting days and tons of travel she endures. And we swear by rose water spritzes throughout the day to refresh skin and awaken the senses. Can't live without it!"
Here at POPSUGAR, many editors have Mario Basescu Facial Spray With Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater on our desks - so we get it.
Please Stop "Baking" Your Under Eye
Your under-eye area is not a cake. The under-eye area is a delicate area of skin that should be nurtured and cared for tenderly. It should not be "baked."
Please consider the following questions carefully before you pile pounds of translucent powder under your eye: are you a celebrity that is followed by the flashbulbs of paparazzi photographers? Do you make a living off of taking "selfies" and creating social media posts? Are you a Kardashian?
If you answered "no" to any of these questions, then "baking" is not for you.
"While it is a technique that can work wonderfully when necessary; it is not a move for the masses."
This technique involves applying translucent powder, preferably the tried-and-true Laura Mercier Translucent Powder ($38), heavily to the under-eye area to set and highlight. After foundation and/or concealer is applied, a thick coat of powder is applied to the face (under the eyes and on the cheekbones, bridge of the nose, chin, and forehead for definition) and is left on to "bake" for 10+ minutes, using body temperature as the heat source. It is then dusted away with a fluffy brush. While it is a technique that can work wonderfully when necessary, it is not a move for the masses.
The skin surrounding the eye is thin and delicate and is where we show our first signs of aging. It is this area that first starts to crease and wrinkle as we age. The area that wrinkles so charmingly with our smiles and laughs in our youth suddenly betrays us as elasticity and collagen lessen. There are no oil glands surrounding our eyes, which is why eye cream is so imperative in halting the aging process. Keeping this area hydrated and plump is a must to keep a youthful look.
Add to this the fact that blood pools naturally under the eyes, creating dark shadows. Additionally, if one is prone to allergies, water retention, or too high of a sodium intake, the area under the eyes can be puffy and swollen.
Clearly, with all of this to consider, it is no wonder there are millions of products for brightening, tightening, and lightening the under-eye area.
As a regional artist for Laura Mercier for over a decade, I have enjoyed watching the Laura Mercier Translucent Powder rise in popularity as beauty bloggers have stated time and again that it is the best for "baking." While it is a tried and true technique that works for the people that it works for, I am here to tell you that just because your favorite beauty blogger tells you to do to do something doesn't mean that you should do it.
I spend time each day as a Laura Mercier artist in stores convincing women not to buy the powder if their plan is to pile it under their eyes, which will in most cases end up aging them 10 years or more. Most often, women will find that their under-eye concealer is too "wet" or "dewy," and they will want to mattify or set the product. This is an OK idea in theory. There are products that are produced for this very task, specifically Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder, which was Laura Mercier's original product created to set and brighten the under-eye area. This product is so finely milled that it won't ever get cakey or make your under-eye area look dry.
"The technique that promised bright beauty will suddenly find you looking like you are dying a slow death in the Sahara Desert."
The problem with using translucent powder to set the under eye (especially ones that are based in talc) is that it tends to get caught in fine lines and accentuate lines that were not visible without the powder. If you are a person that is flawed in the under-eye area at all (including but not limited to puffs, fine lines, or crow's feet), then this technique will age you beyond your years. As the day progresses and you smile and move your face, the lines will become worse and worse. The technique that promised bright beauty will suddenly find you looking like you are dying a slow death in the Sahara Desert.
The explosion of "baking" on the beauty blog stratosphere and how the results look in real life is the perfect example of how social media doesn't always translate. This trend, like many others that blow up via bloggers, looks amazing in a selfie taken with perfect lighting or a photo taken on the red carpet. Yet, most people who are following these tutorials are not on a red carpet and have to be mindful of how their looks translate in real life.
Maybe it will work for you, and maybe it won't. If you aren't sure, try it. If you look in the mirror and see a 90-year-old version of yourself looking back at you, then you know it's not for you. If you see a bright, polished woman looking back at you in the mirror . . . then you are one of the beauties who can benefit from this trick!

A Time-Traveling Rom-Com Is Coming to Netflix Just in Time For Valentine's Day
A new, original romantic comedy called When We First Met is coming to Netflix just in time for Valentine's Day, and the premise might make your head spin: what if you had one more chance to make the girl of your dreams fall in love with you? What if you had unlimited chances?
When Noah (Pitch Perfect's Adam DeVine) discovers a magical photo booth that sends him back in time by three years, he's able to relive the night he met Avery (Baywatch star Alexandra Daddario) over and over again, attempting to make sparks fly between them. Will it ever work, or are they destined to - dun, dun, dunnn - just be friends?
Admittedly the story sounds pretty similar to 2013's About Time, but since we're currently in a good rom-com drought, we'll take it. When We First Met hits Netflix on Feb. 9, and also stars Robbie Amell, Shelley Hennig, and Andrew Bachelor. Watch the first trailer above!
Bill Skarsgard Has a New Stephen King Project Coming, and It Looks Absolutely Chilling
If American Horror Story and Lost had a baby, and then that baby had another baby with Stephen King, it would probably look something like Hulu's upcoming TV series Castle Rock. The drama is from executive producer J.J. Abrams and the twisted mind of King, who's been using the fictional town of Castle Rock as a setting for a number of his novels over the years (The Dead Zone, Doctor Sleep, Revival). Although many specifics about the show are still under wraps, we do have a few ideas about where it's headed and who we'll see on screen.
Judging from the new trailer, above, the series will intertwine characters and themes from King's body of work. The exact plot is still just a little murky, but here's what goes down in the new footage: Henry Deaver (Moonlight's André Holland) arrives in the fictional town after getting "a call from Shawshank" prison (the very same from King's The Shawshank Redemption) and is later seen speaking to an inmate there (It's Bill Skarsgard). While investigating whatever it is in the prison that needs his attention - it seems to involve a suicide - Henry bumps into other odd people in the town: Ruth Deaver (clearly related to Henry, played by Sissy Spacek), Molly Strand (Melanie Lynskey), Alan Pangborn (Scott Glenn), and more.
Obviously the show boasts a rock-solid cast (pun intended), so we're even more excited for it to arrive on Hulu. So far the only premiere date we have for Castle Rock is at some point in Summer 2018. In the meantime, watch both the trailer and the initial teaser.

Evangeline Lilly Steals the Show in the First Kickass Trailer For Ant-Man and the Wasp
The first trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp is here! The action-packed sequel to the 2015 original finds Hope (Evangeline Lilly) and her father, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), on the run from the government thanks to some shenanigans Scott/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) got up to ("I do some dumb things, and the people I love the most pay the price," Scott intones in a voice-over). Fortunately Hope, who is now a superhero in her own right thanks to her high-tech Wasp suit, can handle it. While there's no sign of new cast member Michelle Pfeiffer, we do get a tiny glimpse of Laurence Fishburne's Dr. Bill Foster and a giant Hello Kitty Pez dispenser (yes, really). Watch the trailer above before it explodes into theaters on July 6.
16 Things We Know About The Handmaid's Tale Season 2
We're officially in some new fresh hell in 2018, and when it comes to The Handmaid's Tale, we're already looking ahead. If you read the book, you'll know that the first season finale ends in the same frustrating way the book ends: June is taken into a mysterious van and carted off to a mysterious future somewhere else. In this case, though, we don't have to wonder endlessly. How much can we uncover about the show's next chapter? Well, blessed be the fruit - we've got a lot to go over. Let's see what we could uncover (under his eye).
1. It's Going to Be Longer
While the first season was 10 episodes, the second has been extended to 13.
2. Alexis Bledel Will Reprise Her Role
Thought you'd seen the last of Ofglen/Emily? Not so fast. Bledel has been confirmed as part of season two's cast! We'll get a glimpse of Ofglen in the Colonies, the toxic wasteland where women who commit crimes are sent as punishment. "We get to see the colonies. It's a terrible place where they send Unwomen to work them to death," executive producer Bruce Miller said during a pre-Emmy panel in August. Bledel also commented on her character's new situation, saying, "I'm very interested to see what that looks like because it's a completely different world we haven't seen on the show yet - and I'm scared."
3. The Colonies Are Even Bleaker and Darker Than They Sound
A new feature by Marie Claire describes the Colonies in all their grim glory. As a refresher, the Colonies are where deviants (known as Unwomen) get sent for misbehaving. The new story describes the Colonies as "a dark and grime-filled wasteland." Costume designer Ane Crabtree offered a bit more insight. "The Unwomen are kind of the new Handmaids in season two. They're turning over soil, trying to move radiation, so they get filthy," she revealed. "They have probably six months - at best two years - to live. We're trying to show that humanity in their costumes. I made beautiful sheer pieces to be worn under their outfits since they strip down, as their clothing is full of radiation." Yikes.
4. The Trailer Is DARK
Here, we get a glimpse of all the mayhem that lies ahead. Offred is covered in blood and lighting things on fire! The Colonies are here, and they look f*cking awful! Tension is surely bubbling over, and we can't imagine what else this next bank of episodes might hold.
5. Surprise, Surprise: The President Has Inspired Parts of the Season
While season one of the show was planned before the 2016 election, the same is not true for season two. When it comes to some of Trump's "draconian policies," as Marie Claire phrases it, creator Bruce Miller can't help but incorporate today's reality into the fabric of the show. "Oh, I think we can't help but let it influence us," he said. "We have let it influence us. And there are a lot of issues we brought up last year that we want to address this year in ways we never had time to."
6. Things Are Only Going to Get Worse All Around
Earlier this month, The Pool interviewed Elisabeth Moss and grilled her on what's to come. "Wait till you see what's coming! It's going to get worse, girl. Season two is going to be bad too, really dark." Here we were, thinking June might have been rescued from the Waterfords. Maybe it's not that simple.
7. June Is Covered in Blood in a First Photo
You might remember how ruthlessly June is whisked away at the end of season one. We have no idea who takes her or where she even ends up. But if the first pictures of the season are any indication, she is certainly not safe. We're rooting for you, June!
8. June's Romance With Nick May Intensify
Elle ran a profile of Moss in early June, and she dropped a small tidbit about her Gilead lover, Nick. "It's part of the reason that I'm really excited about a season two, she's in this position where she might be in love with two people," Moss said, "Honestly, I think she does love Nick - if I can speak for her - but I don't know if she knows that she does yet. But she has a husband who she also loves, who's the father of Hannah, who she also now knows is alive."
9. Pay Attention to the Marthas
Showrunner Bruce Miller noted, "The Marthas in general in Gilead are kind of invisible . . . it's been great for us that it's been such a slow and careful building of a relationship between Rita and Offred. That slow and careful build-up in season one leads to a payoff so that we can use her more in season two."
10. We Might See Aunt Lydia's Backstory
Meanwhile, Miller also spoke to The New York Times about season two. Aunt Lydia could still play a key role in the show's next chapter. "Aunt Lydia is one of my most fascinating characters," Miller said. "We would like to explore her back story, and what the lives of the aunts are like."
11. The Mayday Resistance Is Another Key Component, but Let's Not Get Too Excited
It's easy to assume Mayday means salvation for the Handmaids, but not so fast. "The Mayday resistance is going to be a big part of Season two," Miller admitted. "The part that I've been thinking about is that Mayday is not the handmaid rescue organization - it's the anti-Gilead organization. And the anti-Gilead organization is not necessarily a friend to June or a friend to Handmaids. If I was going to try to hurt Gilead, the first thing I might do is kill all the handmaids. You're trying to weaken the state."
12. The Waterfords Aren't Necessarily Going Away
After the finale, Miller talked about what's to come. In regards to the Waterfords, he said, "They're still a part of our plans for season two but in interesting ways."
13. We Will Meet June's Mother
Miller also explained how June's parentage could factor into the story. Miller spoke about June's mother: "We've been thinking about her a lot. June's mother is a big character in the book and representative of an interesting kind of feminism that was seemingly more of that time."
14. The Theme
"At the end of season one, we find out June was pregnant. The theme of season two is motherhood and what it means to be a mother," Miller explained at The Handmaid's Tale panel in August. "It's the way we mother our good friends and the people in our lives."
15. Luke and Moira Might Attempt a Daring Rescue
During the panel in August, Samira Wiley discussed the new possibilities season two holds since it's going beyond the story of the book. "The [first] season ends exactly where the book ends, and to be able to go in season two not knowing what's going to happen and to be in this completely new country with Luke who's the only family I have, it's exciting to see what's going to happen," she said.
16. The Premiere Date Has Been Set
The second season is going to drop on April 25. Are you ready for it?
Oh Sh*t! Do I Want Another Baby?
I've always been very firm and confident about my decision to have two children. Sometimes I frame it in a self-deprecating sort of way (i.e., I would probably go crazy or start drinking wine at lunch if I had more). Sometimes, I point to the numbers game - two kids, two parents, makes sense to me. Other times, I tell myself that limiting our family to two kids means they each get more attention, time, and financial resources (in other words, having just one sibling is in their best interests).
But just recently, as my youngest child's fourth birthday got closer and closer, I started having a new, unfamiliar, and much less comfortable feeling about the perfect number of children I've been so confident about. Like, maybe I should have had one more.
I understand that baby fever is probably a natural reaction for any mom who's saying a final goodbye to the baby/toddler stage. Those years are so physically exhausting and overwhelming, but they're also extremely purposeful. Never again will our children have such immediate needs and require so much from us 24 hours a day. Every mom of small children occasionally daydreams about the future, when we'll drop off our kids for a full day of school and they'll be able to dress and feed and entertain themselves. But once that day arrives, our reaction to being needed less is probably more complicated than simple joy.
I love this new stage my children are entering (my oldest turns 7 in a couple of months). They are becoming more and more independent, and their developing personalities continue to delight my husband and me. But I also have a phantom itch for the singular purpose of 3 a.m. feedings and diaper changes and naptime struggles. I've been all-in moming for so long now that I've forgotten there's a world that doesn't center around meeting the all-encompassing demands of tiny humans.
So, like any mommy masochist, I feel a part of myself wishing for more of the pain that comes with high-risk pregnancies, sleepless nights, cracked nipples, and doing everything with one arm because the other is holding a baby.
And then I look at my now 4-year-old, who ran into my room yesterday morning and, seeing his dad, sister, and me cuddling in bed, asked, "Can I join this party?" I remember how lovely it is to have a few hours on the days he's in preschool to run errands or just be in my home alone, when I can tidy up a room and know it will still be neat five minutes later. I think about how nice it is that we're going to movies and dinners and museums together as a family, knowing everyone will enjoy the experience and the odds of a major meltdown are becoming slimmer and slimmer.
And I remember that shortly after my daughter's seventh birthday, I'll celebrate my 39th. I think about how much harder a pregnancy would be now than at 34, how much more exhausting it would be to get my daughter on a bus at 7:30 a.m. every school morning after being up with a baby all night. And I realize that the baby itch is not one I should scratch. There are other ways to grow our family - namely by adding a four-legged member. I'm mailing our deposit for a puppy today.

Mom Makes a Case For Referring to Kids as Assh*les, and the Internet Applauds
Image Source: Stocksnap / Hunter Johnson
Let's take a quick minute to be honest here: raising kids isn't always a picnic. Sure, we love them to bits and they certainly make our lives better by existing, but that doesn't mean they're always perfect. In fact, they can be little turds a lot of the time! Or, as one mom on Twitter so aptly put it, they can be "assh*les."
Look, we gotta stop acting like it's a bad thing to call our kids assholes. Like my daughter just dead ass death glared me while pouring her juice on the floor after I said not too. Come on. That makes her an asshole. Don't shame me.
- milfshake🥤 (@mamalieky1) January 29, 2018
The relatable (and hilarious) tweet about kids' less-than-angelic tendencies began going viral on Instagram as parents voiced their agreement about the sentiment that we should call it like we see it.
Exactly! But only I can call my kid an asshole, if anybody else calls her an asshole We're fighting . https://t.co/xqEQFT2ITD

Little girls are the type to stare you dead in the face as they push your wine glass over onto your white carpet because they didn't get the glittery stuffed animal they wanted 😐 little boys are harmlessly evil generally lol
- Narnian Space Turtle (@h1pp1e_) January 29, 2018
I try not to cuss around my son so I'll improvise and say butthole or whatever😂 But I totally agree with this 😭😭 https://t.co/AxIqg4HjNM
- A✨ (@Mama_Cookiee) January 29, 2018
Nobody is advocating calling your toddler an assh*le to their face. But when you're relaxing with a glass of wine around other parents, should it really be frowned upon to complain about that assh*le move your kid pulled in the midst of their "Terrible Twos" tantrum at the grocery store or when they intentionally poured milk on your mattress? We think not, and based on the responses to the tweet, other parents agree!
Kids are like cats - they can sometimes be assh*les, but they're cute enough to make up for it.

I Finally Found a Makeup Primer That Helps Cover My Dark Acne Scars
As a longtime acne sufferer, my face has quite a few scars that are hard to cover up. I recently started using this Clarins SOS Primer in Coral ($39) and have been fielding compliments daily on how good my skin looks.
The brand just released a line of primers that comes in six different shades. Each one helps address concerns for various skin conditions. The hydrating formula contains sea lily and white tea, which soothe your skin. Mother-of-pearl pigments also help to even out your complexion. I prefer the coral shade, which reduces the appearance of dark spots.
My makeup routine has always consisted of sunscreen, foundation, and powder. Never have I thought about using a primer before. I have to admit, I always get a little nervous to try new things because my problematic skin is so sensitive - I didn't want the formula to cause a break out.
After the first application, I immediately thought, "how have I been living without this?" This consistency is silky smooth, and my skin soaks it right up. Before I even apply my foundation, my skin instantly looks more even, brighter, and glowing. Once I follow up with my usual products, it makes my makeup look even better. I have been using it for a week now, and I can't believe how clear my face looks. I haven't noticed any abnormal breakouts either.
From combating redness to ridding my complexion of dullness, this product truly works. Check out the brand's other shades ($39) and see which one is perfect for you.
Beard Burn Is Really a Thing, and Here's How to Deal With It
Even if you're not totally down with the beard gang, you have to admit there's something about facial hair that is just sexy AF. Want to know what's not sexy though? The red, stinging, irritated skin that can come from kissing a face full of hair. Sure, it's a risk worth taking, but even if you're not doing any superheavy smooching, you still may notice tingling, almost rug-burned skin afterward.
That's called beard burn. On the surface, your skin may also look slightly swollen and dry. Dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe shared three easy solutions for saving your skin after a heavy (or light) make-out session.
Suggest Some Grooming Swaps
If this one is too good to give up, you've got to speak up. Try communicating with your partner, and let him know this is an issue for you. Offer some grooming suggestions that can benefit the both of you. "It helps if the guy's beard is softened and cleaned by shampoo and conditioner but also a natural seed oil, which will aid in lubricating the skin," Bowe said.
Adjust Your Regimen
In case of an unexpected beard burn, you'll want to have a few products on hand with nonirritating ingredients to help calm and heal sensitivity and redness. Dr. Bowe recommends adding a topical probiotic like Tula Multi-Spectrum Overnight Skin Rescue Treatment ($85). Some probiotic skincare products have actual live bacteria or a bacterial derivative that when directly applied to the skin's surface can help to calm inflammation in the skin.
Cover With Correctors
To help neutralize any redness in the skin from the irritation, try a color corrector like bareMinerals Correcting Concealer SPF 20 ($21) to even out imperfections in the skin.
Steer Clear of Fragrance
"Be careful of using moisturizers with fragrance in them while your skin is still experiencing irritation as it can cause discomfort," Bowe adds. She also advises against exfoliating, particularly on sore spots. It'll add more distress to your already-raw skin.
Seek Out Soothers
This includes ingredients like aloe vera, green tea, and as previously mentioned, probiotics. Look for these kind of skin calmers in products like Dr. Jart Ceramidin Gel-Cream ($49) "Some probiotics can boost the skin's production of ceramides which help to lock in your skin's moisture, thereby protecting and strengthening your skin's natural barrier from any irritations," Bowe concludes.
See, there's no need to forfeit a good time in the name a beauty. So go ahead, and kiss all up on that man.

Makeup Artist Reimagines 8 Disney Princesses With an Indian Twist - and It's Gorgeous!
Hamel Patel is a North Carolina-based model and makeup artist with over 34k followers. While her feed is filled with stunning makeup looks, it's her latest series of Disney princesses that has the internet in awe. Hamel didn't just re-create the princesses we all spent our childhood obsessing over - she gave them an Indian twist.
"I always wished I had a Desi princess to look up to while growing up, so I decided to take it into my own hands!" Hamel told POPSUGAR about her inspiration for the looks, feeling "the lack of Desi representation in the Disney community" from a young age.
She transformed into Belle, Mulan, Cinderella, Pocahontas, Snow White, Jasmine, Princess Aurora, and Ariel with bold makeup and then upped the ante with traditional Indian attire and accessories. "Trying to keep all the looks different was really difficult, so I tried different styles and used colors that matched each princess," Hamel explained. Not only does her Belle look have a rose, but she's wearing a yellow sari and a sparkling bindi. Read on to see the reimagined princesses, and prepare to be amazed.

NYX Is Giving Away Free Mascara - but There's a Catch
Be honest - when was the last time you switched out your mascara? If you're a good noodle, it's advised that you throw your old tubes away after three months. We know, we know, it's hard saying goodbye. But luckily, NYX will make things a little easier for you. For one day only, you can trade in your old tube for a brand spankin' new Worth the Hype Volumizing & Lengthening Mascara ($8).
On Saturday, Feb. 3, pop into your local NYX store bearing the lash-plumper you currently use. You'll be able to switch that out for a Worth the Hype mascara, thus saving your wallet for the next three months.
But be sure to go early - only the first 100 customers who walk through the doors on Feb. 3 will be eligible for this offer. It's first come, first served, so you'll have to sacrifice hitting your snooze button for a free mascara. (For the record: most NYX stores open at 10 a.m., but be sure to check with your local one just in case.)
Here's some incentive to wake up early. As you can see in the image ahead, Worth the Hype can amp up lashes to a natural but flush finish. There's no clumping here, just opaque black coverage that makes the model's eyes look gorgeously huge.
In short: get thee to an NYX!
How the Spierig Brothers Convinced Helen Mirren to Join Their New Horror Film, Winchester
For decades, a main staple of horror movies was the presence of a young, nubile damsel in distress; what would Friday the 13th or Halloween be without an Alice or a Laurie? In recent years, the genre has thankfully begun to explore new territory. Instead of 18-year-old, scantily-clad white women running for their lives, we've been given heroes like Get Out's Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), a young black man, or the Insidious franchise's Elise, played by 74-year-old Lin Shaye. When directing-duo Michael and Peter Spierig - frequently referred to as the Spierig Brothers - set out to bring the chilling legend of San Jose's Winchester Mystery House to life in the aptly titled Winchester, they had a similar idea in mind.
The supposedly haunted house, which you can actually go visit, was once the home of Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. After the tragic death of her infant daughter and the deaths of both her father-in-law and husband only a year later, Sarah's mental state began to deteriorate. All alone and with an inheritance of $20 million at her disposal, legend has it that Sarah sought out a medium in an attempt to communicate with her late husband. She then began to feel as though she was being haunted by the souls of all those killed by Winchester guns, so the medium told her to move West, build a home, and continue adding to the property, basically forever, to appease the spirits.
What was originally an eight-room farmhouse was soon filled with windows where there didn't need to be any, staircases leading nowhere, and an insane amount of fireplaces. Toward the end of her life, the house had close to 160 rooms. Needless to say, the eccentric life of Sarah Winchester and her eerie home proved to be an irresistible idea for the Spierig Brothers. After tackling horror properties like Daybreakers, Jigsaw, and Predestination, they set out to bring the tale to life - but who could possibly play Sarah?
"Helen Mirren was obviously our first choice, and we didn't really think she'd do it - not because we didn't believe in the script, but because she'd never done a horror movie or supernatural thriller before," Michael told POPSUGAR during a recent phone call ahead of the film's Feb. 2 release. "I thought the prospect was pretty slim that she'd want to do it, but she was fascinated by Sarah Winchester the person. I think that's what really drew her in."

While the film also stars Jason Clarke as a doctor sent to evaluate Sarah's mind, Helen Mirren is indisputably its lead. The 72-year-old Oscar winner's performance anchors the supernatural legend, which sees her battling evil, Civil War-era spirits and gliding through the home's maze of hallways in a dramatic, floor-length black gown and matching veil. She's not your typical Final Girl.
"It's exciting to have a film where a stronger, older woman is the lead," Michael continued. "She's not just playing the victim, but actually contributing to the solution and being active and intelligent. Sarah isn't just a crazy person living in the attic. We tried to portray her as intelligent, as somebody who's plagued with loss and grief and guilt, but also someone who's quite proactive. She offers up solutions to the problem. She was wonderful, and it's obvious that we were extremely lucky to have her."
"It's exciting to have a film where a stronger, older woman is the lead."
Although Sarah's ever-evolving monstrosity of a home is a character in and of itself - Peter told POPSUGAR they were able to film certain scenes on location at the real house, while the rest were shot on a soundstage in Australia - the real hook of the story is of course Sarah herself. The guilt she feels over her husband's gun empire is a unique twist, and the abhorrence of gun violence is oddly (and unfortunately) timely.
"The house was a huge draw for us, but also I think Sarah Winchester herself was a massive influence on us," Michael told us. "I thought she was such a fascinating woman, and to find a mythology like that . . . I mean, here's a woman who felt like she was plagued by all the deaths at the hand of the Winchester rifle. It's a fascinating place to begin building a story."
Peter agreed, adding, "The important thing for us firstly was that it was based on a true story. That immediately, I think, makes it really captivating, especially because that place really exists and you can go and see it. This is not only a story about an American symbol like the Winchester rifle and the fact that the rifle did what it did when it changed warfare, but also that Sarah Winchester profited from that. That's what makes it different to any story of haunted houses that I've ever seen."
For those of you wondering, yes - Winchester has the same kind of loud, string-backed jump scares that pepper countless other horror films these days. In that area, the film is much like many of its predecessors. But it's also an important and exciting entry into the genre, thanks to its older female lead. Michael Spierig hopes that they're one of many who are stepping up in terms of diversifying the way scary movies are approached in the future.
"It's endlessly creative. There are no rules," he said. "A lot of great sci-fi and a lot of great horror deals with topical ideas. Often a good sci-fi or a horror movie reflects a lot of contemporary issues, and I think that's always powerful."
Winchester premieres in theaters on Feb. 2.
This Is Us Hid a Huge Clue About Jack's Death in Season 1 and You Probably Missed It
This Is Us is certainly known for its huge twists, but if we've learned anything these past two seasons, it's that nothing is a coincidence. While we were all shocked to learn how the fire started in the Pearson home, it seems like the writers have been leaving us hints since the very beginning. As everyone else was theorizing just exactly how Jack would die during the Super Bowl episode, Reddit user PtbFE found a telling clue about the house fire during season one, episode two.
During the opening scene, Rebecca is shown preparing breakfast for the Big Three, who are about 10 at the time, in the kitchen. Not only does the scene show a box of Pac-Man cereal on top of the fridge, but it also focuses on the slower cooker on the counter. Yes, that slow cooker. While it didn't seem like a big deal back then, we now know that the household appliance (and its faulty switch) is the reason the house ends up going up in flames. How could you do this to us, This Is Us?
It's clear that the writers have been mapping Jack's death out for a long time. Seeing as creator Dan Fogelman already had the first four seasons planned out when he pitched the pilot, there's really no telling what other clues are hidden throughout the past two seasons.
A Comprehensive Guide to Who Taylor Swift's Songs Are About
In the wake of Taylor Swift's recent release of Reputation there's no better time to make sure you have your Swift facts straight. Most importantly, she writes from the heart, and a lot of her songs are about certain people. She doesn't reserve her songwriting for romance gone bad, either: she's also called out a couple of ladies and exes. Here is a brief history of Swift's songs about other famous people.
Kim Kardashian Is Sending Valentines to Her 12 Biggest Celebrity "Haters" - Here's Who They Are
Gather 'round, children, and settle in for an epic tale of pettiness, the likes of which our ancestors could only dream about. Kim Kardashian has officially turned her Instagram account into a Mean Girls-style "burn book," using her Valentine's fragrance launch as a chance to show off her list of "haters" to the world at large.
For a bit of context, Kim's V-Day fragrances are shaped like candy conversation hearts and read "BFF," "Bae," or "Ride or Die." To promote the new launch, Kim has been sending the candy-shaped perfumes to press and influencers in large, chocolate hearts that have to be cracked open with a wooden mallet to reveal the bottle inside.
In an Instagram story, Kim showed her followers a large list of names written on sticky notes. "All right, guys, I am writing the list for my press boxes! I'm gonna send them to way more than this, but I decided for this Valentine's Day, everyone deserves a valentine," Kim narrated, zooming in closer to the names. "So I'm going to send them to my lovers, to my haters, to everyone that I think of . . . because it's Valentine's Day, after all." Here's the list, with 12 noted "haters" on the left in green:

So, who's on the list? And more importantly, what did they do to deserve their places there? Allow me to explain.
Kim's Haters
- Sarah Michelle Gellar: After Kim and Kanye appeared on the cover of Vogue in 2014, Sarah Michelle Gellar tweeted about canceling her subscription and urged fans to do the same.
- Piers Morgan: Piers (who never hesitates to drop his hyperconservative, slut-shaming opinions into conversations which he wasn't invited to in the first place) is a regular Kardashian hater. Most recently, he slammed Kim for posting a topless photo on Instagram in January 2018, tweeting: "Put them away, for goodness sake."
- Janice Dickinson: The retired supermodel insulted the Kardashian-Jenners when she said "They're not models!" during a 2016 TV interview evaluating their place in fashion and referred to their "plastic" butts.
- Naya Rivera: Naya left a shady comment about Kim Kardashian's nude Paper magazine shoot in 2014, chiding, "You're someone's mother." A pregnant Naya then posed for her own nude magazine shoot the next year.
- Chloë Grace Moretz: Kim and Chloë had a very public Twitter feud in 2016 after the actress encouraged Kim to be a better role model to young girls.
- Blac Chyna: There's so much to unpack here. Read up on their drama to understand why Chyna is on the list!
- Pink: The singer also indirectly shamed Kim over her nude mirror selfie in 2016, then reignited the feud in late 2017 by speaking about it in the press.
- Taylor Swift: Much like with Blac Chyna, there's a lot behind this particular feud. Read up on the details here.
- Bette Midler: When Bette tweeted in 2016 that Kim would have to "swallow a camera" to show the world a body part they've never seen, it ignited a pretty savage feud.
- Wendy Williams: On her talk show in January 2018, Wendy suggested that Kim posts nude selfies because "Kanye does not pay attention" to her.
- Chelsea Handler: Chelsea has used the Kardashian family as the butt of her jokes frequently over several years, and it clearly doesn't sit well with Kim.
- Sharon Osbourne: In a 2017 interview, Sharon called Kim a "ho" and suggested that she is not a feminist.
Whew! So there you have it - the top haters on Kim's presumably long list. But don't go thinking that they all got "bae" conversation heart perfumes; Kim clarified via Twitter that only her loved ones received those.
let me just say all haters didn't get bae. some of my real bff's got bae too and my mom!
- Kim Kardashian West (@KimKardashian) February 1, 2018
Because Kris's name is written on a pink sticky, we're assuming the names on that column all received "Bae" perfumes. But what did the "haters" column receive? Knowing Kim, probably a facetious "BFF." Remind us not to get on her bad side.
6 Celebrity Couples Who Have Already Called It Quits This Year
It may only be February, but we've already had our fair share of celebrity breakups. While we're certainly hoping we don't reach last year's levels, we've sadly had to come to terms with the fact that some of our favorite couples are no longer together. From longtime pairs like Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff to music power couple Nicki Minaj and Nas, see all the celebrity duos who've broken up this year - so far.
So . . . Does Dr. Bailey Die on Grey's Anatomy or What?
Last week's episode of Grey's Anatomy had us reeling with questions, the most important being: "Is Bailey going to die?!" This week's episode gave us fans an answer, so if you haven't watched yet, stop now or forever hold your peace.
We are greeted by a flashback of Bailey's childhood, with her mother calling her name and the head of surgery giving a voice-over, basically saying if her job kills her, she will be happy. Once the flashback ends, we are treated to a snapshot of Miranda, Ben, and their son, Tuck, on their drive to school.
Everything seems happy until Tuck exits the vehicle and Bailey goes back to being mad at Ben for his new firefighting gig. (Who can blame her? He was a little selfish while making that decision.) Throughout this whole scenario, we see Bailey pop some Tums and seem a little bit off overall, a foreshadowing of what's to come.
Bailey enters a hospital (not Grey Sloan) after giving her husband the cold shoulder, where she abruptly tells the receptionist in the iconic preview scene, "My name is Miranda Bailey; I'm chief of surgery, and I believe I am having a heart attack."
While we are panicking over whether or not Bailey is about to die, we are also thrown into a world of frustration when Dr. Maxwell enters and quickly decides that Bailey is just a paranoid woman. Dr. Maxwell claims that Bailey is simply stressed and her OCD is acting up, and when she asks for a second opinion, he sends a (male, of course) psychologist. She continues to argue that she is being overlooked, asking these men why they dismiss women every time they claim to have physical symptoms, but she is ignored and refused a stress test. By this point we are breathing into a paper bag and simultaneously screaming at Dr Maxwell.
Bailey isn't a quitter, though, so she calls Maggie to handle the situation. When Maggie arrives, she is surprised to see the chief (who knew just from Bailey calling out sick where she was), but neither of them find Bailey in her bed. Instead, she is giving compressions to the patient having a heart attack next to her, but this act is what sends Bailey into a full-fledged heart attack herself. This whole time Bailey is having flashbacks to her mother and stressful job, which seems to be her trying to sort out some guilt for her career choice.
Maggie is understandably livid that none of the doctors believed Bailey about her heart attack, and after Dr. Maxwell fails at fixing Bailey's heart, Maggie takes over. She does a procedure that Dr. Maxwell (who should honestly have his license revoked, in my opinion) doesn't even know about and calls Ben so that Bailey has support. Something goes wrong midway through the process of getting Bailey's heart back, and because it's Grey's, we are then taken to the waiting room, where Ben and the chief are waiting.
The chief has a talk with Ben while there, explaining that Ben is asking Bailey to wait like this every time he leaves to fight a fire. Ben seems to really take this into account and has a possibly life-changing moment.
Miraculously, Bailey survives! Ben is mad that she didn't call and just said it was "heartburn," and he even says he won't be fighting fires. But almost dying has changed Bailey, and she decides that Ben should fight fires! The episode ends with Bailey calling her mother - who throughout the flashbacks was constantly worried about her daughter's safety - telling her she had a heart attack but is going to be OK. Surprisingly, when called, Bailey's mother says, "I know; I know you are. You're my Mandy."
Can we just say how relieved we are that Bailey is OK and how doctors really should take female patients more seriously? All of this could have been easily avoided.
Modern Family's Julie Bowen Is Separating From Her Husband of 13 Years
After 13 years of marriage, Julie Bowen and Scott Phillips are calling it quits. People reports the Modern Family star and her husband, a real-estate investor, are separating just a few months after celebrating their September wedding anniversary. The pair tied the knot back in 2004 and share three sons: Oliver, 10, and 8-year-old twins John and Gustav.
Over the last few years, Julie has been open about her family life. In addition to gushing about her children on late-night shows, she told People that Scott has always been "so supportive" of her TV success on Modern Family, which recently celebrated its 200th episode.
Julie and Scott haven't been seen on the red carpet together since the 2016 Los Angeles LGBT Center's 47th Anniversary Gala Vanguard Awards, however, where the 47-year-old actress joked that she and her longtime husband were "too tired" to divorce. They were most recently spotted out at a Harlem Globetrotters game in LA with their kids almost a year ago, in February 2017.
Step Up? More Like Step Down: Recording Academy Chief Asked to Resign by Female Executives
Not even a week after Recording Academy president Neil Portnow made sexist comments about why women were effectively shut out of the Grammys this year - he told reporters female musicians need to "step up" to receive better representation in the industry - a group of female executives are calling for his resignation. According to The Hollywood Reporter, over a dozen women signed a passionate letter that slammed Portnow's comments.
"The statement you made this week about women in music needing to 'step up' was spectacularly wrong and insulting and, at its core, oblivious to the vast body of work created by and with women," the letter begins. "Your attempt to backpedal only emphasizes your refusal to recognize us and our achievements. Your most recent remarks do not constitute recognition of women's achievements, but rather a call for men to take action to 'welcome' women. We do not await your welcome into the fraternity. We do not have to sing louder, jump higher or be nicer to prove ourselves."
The letter, which THR published in full, goes on to touch on gender discrepancy in the recording industry as a whole, as well as the #GrammysSoMale problem that was front and center at the annual award ceremony on Jan. 28.
The letter continues: "We step up every single day and have been doing so for a long time. The fact that you don't realize this means it's time for you to step down. Today we are stepping up and stepping in to demand your resignation."
The women who signed the letter include executives from talent agencies like UTA and PMK-BNC, as well as Pharrell Williams's manager, Caron Veazey. Their decision to directly address Portnow comes just after the Recording Academy announced its plans to establish an "independent task force" to promote female musicians and identify the organization's gender bias. "I appreciate that the issue of gender bias needs to be addressed in our industry and share in the urgency to attack it head-on," Portnow said. "We as an organization, and I as its leader, pledge our commitment to doing that."
Regardless of how sorry Portnow might be, his thoughtless comments have infuriated and alienated not only the women who signed the letter, but also many of the artists whose spectacular performances make the Grammys worth watching in the first place. The morning after performing at the Grammys, Pink shared a handwritten note on Twitter saying that "Women in music don't need to 'step up' - women have been stepping since the beginning of time." Lorde, Sheryl Crow, Kelly Clarkson, and more went on to call out Portnow as well, and eventually a Care2 petition was started in hopes of ousting him from his position.
The letter (which you should read in its entirety) concludes: "We are here not to merely reprimand you, but to shed light on why there is such an outcry over your comments and remind you of the challenges that women face in our country and, specifically, in the music industry. Your comments are another slap in the face to women, whether intended or not. . . . Needless to say, if you are not part of the solution, then you must accept that YOU are part of the problem. Time's up, Neil."
Hailee Steinfeld Does Her Best Anastasia Steele Impression in the "Capital Letters" Video
Hailee Steinfeld has joined the Fifty Shades family, and we couldn't be happier about it. In the music video released for her and BloodPop's "Capital Letters," which you can find on the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack, the actress/pop star twirls around on a beach and has a romantic honeymoon in Paris with a sexy dude who looks a whole lot like Christian Grey. If you've already watched the trailer for the third chapter in the BDSM franchise, you know that Ana and Christian will have their own European adventure after tying the knot. That means the "Capital Letters" video is basically a preview, only without the red room of pain. Watch it above!
Everyone Is Talking About Cardi B's Super Bowl Ad, But We're Distracted by Gordon Ramsay
Do you ever look at your Amazon Echo and wish that Alexa had a bit more personality? Like, instead of calmly saying, "OK, now playing songs by The Weeknd from Spotify in the bedroom," perhaps she could exclaim: "OKURRRRR, girlfriend, I know what you're up to!" Well, that's a reality that Amazon's star-studded Super Bowl commercial wants you to imagine - if Alexa lost her voice and needed a little help from some famous friends. Between Cardi B, Rebel Wilson, Anthony Hopkins, and the ever-charming Gordon Ramsay, the range of potential Alexa personalities in the ad is downright hilarious.
Though the commercial isn't actually promising celebrity voices for your Echo, fans would definitely spring for a new device if it meant having their favorite stars as household assistants.
If this is a real thing I would literally put my whole tax refund to pay for Rebel Wilson to be the voice of my Alexa https://t.co/T2m8llhuvC
- iowan (@iceylauren) February 1, 2018
If Cardi b was Alexa I might actually buy one lol
- Hailey Brightful (@HaileyBrightful) February 1, 2018
I'd be okay with Gordon Ramsay as the permanent Alexa voice, he'd keep me on my shit when I'm slacking https://t.co/S0YkFAF6oW
- Kell (@kellirodrigues_) February 1, 2018
Except Anthony Hopkins, perhaps. Westworld and Silence of the Lambs taught people better than to trust his voice.
I would crap my pants if Anthony Hopkins voice came thru my Alexa speaker...sheer terror😨💀 https://t.co/8kEon6wy4N

18 Times Harry and Meghan Showed Us That They're the Perfect Royal Match
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are headed down the aisle! The couple first began dating in 2016 and recently announced their engagement, and even though many of us (myself included) are still nursing a broken heart, it's hard not to be happy for them. I mean, just look at them! They clearly make each other incredibly happy, and just listen to the way they talk about each other. Have you ever heard anything cuter? While we may have lost our chance of becoming the future Her Royal Highness Princess Henry of Wales, we couldn't think of a better royal match!
The First Trailer For Station 19 Has Sex, Drama, and . . . Meredith Grey?
Did you know that three blocks down from the hospital we know and love on Grey's Anatomy is a firehouse teeming with sexy, life-saving firefighters? Well, if you weren't aware of that already, you will be after watching the first trailer for Station 19, the Grey's spinoff.
Connecting the two shows is Dr. Ben Warren (Jason George), who decides to leave Grey Sloan Memorial to become a firefighter. Now, a few weeks after obsessing over some telling photos from the pilot, the trailer has given us an even better sense of what to expect. Rosewood's Jaina Lee Ortiz leads the diverse cast as Andy Herrera, a firefighter who steps up to lead her firehouse after the chief, her own father, suffers a serious injury on the job. The trailer teases a steamy romance (and potentially a love triangle involving Andy and her coworkers), a deadly rescue mission during a fire, and a cameo from Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) herself.
The 10-episode spinoff will have a special two-hour premiere on March 22 before moving to its regular slot on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET, starting March 29. In the meantime, watch the trailer above!
Is This the Grammys or an Old Hollywood Movie? It's Hard to Tell With These Gorgeous Photos
There were an abundance of beautiful photos taken at this years Grammy Awards, from the red carpet dresses to the behind-the-scenes moments, that made us feel like we were part of it. But this gorgeous set of of black and white photos truly transported us and made music's big night feel extra special. In fact, it made us question if we were actually watching the Grammys or an old Hollywood musical. From Miley and Elton's memorable duet to Pink's stripped-down performance, here's proof that everything looks even better in black and white.
