I'm a Light-Skinned Latina, and Yes, Colorism Does Exist

Natalie Rivera is a writer and producer at POPSUGAR.

"You sound too smart to be Latina," he said before taking a gulp of his beer.

This wasn't the first time I had heard something as condescending as this before, but that didn't keep me from making a surprised face. I shuffled uncomfortably and looked the other direction as I softly said, "Well, I am. I'm Mexican-American, actually." I made an excuse and walked to the bar's porch, back to my friends, as he stood there feeling rejected but not embarrassed for what he had said.

I've always been flattered when someone's complimented my smarts and sense of humor, except when they derive from colorism.

Being a light-skinned Latina has been a roller coaster of a ride for me. While I longed for my cousin's dark, honey-kissed complexion, I learned to appreciate my paler skin . . . freckles, veins, and all. I've also had to learn that because my skin is fairer, I'm less likely to be associated with negative stereotypes about Mexican-Americans.

In my 26 years of life, I've hardly ever experienced discrimination or biased comments for my background. In fact, I've experienced more colorism from the Latino community, oftentimes being accused of being "white washed" by classmates through middle and high school.

It wasn't until college that I started hearing more backhanded compliments that praised me for passing for white simply because of the way I spoke and dressed.

I once sat next to a young Latina at a friend's wedding who was confused about my nameplate saying "Rivera."

"Wait, are you Mexican?" she asked.

"Yeah, my name is Natalie Rivera."

"I would have never guessed! You just seem so classy and smart!" she said with a laugh.

I didn't find it that funny, but I gave a friendly chuckle and changed the subject, asking her how she knew the bride and groom. As she spoke, I couldn't help but feel disappointed - disappointed that she assumed that I wasn't Latina because of the way I carried myself, and guilt for feeling flattered.

Yeah, flattered. For a while I thought to myself, "Well, if my community doesn't accept me, then I should simply own being 'white washed.'" I did this not knowing that I was not only depriving myself of my culture, but I was also contributing to the problem.

How many times have we felt relieved any time someone doesn't associate us with stereotypes? How may times have you thought, "I'm not that kind of blank. I'm this kind of blank."

Some of us have this mindset embedded in us because we've only been exposed to colorism, whether it's through a television set or "harmless" comments like, "You look white."

We add fuel to the fire by boxing people in our own community into categories, sometimes without even knowing it. Instead of classifying ourselves, we should acknowledge that not every community will look, speak, or even dress the same. Race will never come in one shade; there will never be a one size fits all. So own it, be a part of a community, and - most importantly - be proud of your roots.

See Gisele Bündchen's History-Making, Makeup-Free Vogue Italia Cover

From her famous hair to her flawless skin, we could stare at Gisele Bündchen all damn day. And even though the iconic supermodel's name is synonymous with exuding glamour, Vogue Italia shunned doing the 37-year-old's hair and makeup for its latest cover story. And guess what? The history-making results are positively angelic.

For the first time ever, Vogue Italia features a makeup-free model on its cover. That means we get to see Gisele's iconic freckles, full brows, and undone hair in all of their glory. To make things even more authentic, photographer Jamie Hawkesworth chose to only use natural light while shooting. Hawkesworth also opted to use film, which is unretouchable. No Photoshop here!

Along with serving a naturally #flawless makeup look, Vogue Italia reports that Gisele styled herself for the cover, and we're totally digging those Looney Tunes slippers she's got on. For real, where can we get our own pair? Read on to see images from this breathtaking cover.

Selena Gomez Is "Feeling Empowered" After Finishing Treatment for Depression and Anxiety

Selena Gomez recently put her health above everything else and got treatment for anxiety and depression, according to People. The 25-year-old reportedly "felt like she needed to get away and focus on herself with no distractions," a source said. "She came back feeling very empowered." Selena finished a two-week program in New York City where she took part in therapy, Pilates, meditation, and eating healthy meals cooked by an on-site chef. "She wants to go again later this year," the source went on to say. "She feels and looks great. She's still working on new music and is excited about it." This isn't the first time Selena has taken time off to focus on her health. In 2016, she revealed she was going to rehab to maintain her "health and happiness."

One person that was very supportive of her decision was her on-again boyfriend, Justin Bieber. "After all the noise that happened over the holidays, she felt like she needed this," a source told People. The noise this source is probably referring to is the fact that Selena and her mom, Mandy Teefy, stopped speaking to each other over the singer's rekindled romance with Justin. Mandy told Gossip Cop she was "not happy" about her daughter's decision to get back with Justin. While Selena and Mandy weren't speaking to each other toward the end of last year, there's no word on whether or not they've started speaking again. We can't wait to see what 2018 has in store for Selena, especially since she's hinted at releasing a new album.

Jennifer Lopez Releases Statement Amid Accusations Against Guess's Paul Marciano

Update: Since the release of Jennifer's Guess campaign, Kate Upton has spoken out against Paul Marciano and alluded to sexual misconduct by the Guess cofounder. This happened to be on the same day that J Lo was attending her Guess launch party. The "Amor Amor Amor" singer released a statement to DailyMail.com about her stance on harassment. "My position on these issues is well known, as I have been very vocal about them. I do not condone any acts of sexual harassment, violation, or misconduct," she stated. "Any accusation should be fully and thoroughly investigated. I will continue to support our rights as women."

Paul has since responded to Kate's allegations, telling TMZ, he was shocked and can't figure out what claims she has against him. He also said he won't apologize because he's done nothing wrong. "If she has a claim, there's one place to tell the truth and that's in court or to the police." Kate briefly spoke out while leaving the airport, also to TMZ. "I'm excited to tell my whole story but a walk to the car is not going to cover it," she said. "I think obviously it's a huge problem . . . I think a lot of people around them know about it and they need to speak out."

Original post: Can we expect anything less from Jennifer Lopez? The 48-year-old made history starring in Guess's Spring 2018 campaign as the oldest Guess Girl ever. She dethroned Claudia Schiffer, who was 41 when she modeled for Guess's 30th anniversary in 2012. "When I got the call from Paul Marciano asking me to become the new Guess Girl, I was thrilled and excited to be a part of such an iconic brand that I have loved since I was a teenager," Jennifer stated in a press release. "When I look back at early Guess campaigns through the years, you see all of these beautiful models and iconic images that Paul has created. It is a tremendous compliment to have been selected for Guess's Spring 2018 campaign."

Guess's cofounder, Paul Marciano, art-directed the campaign that featured Jennifer looking very retro and sexy in a black and white spread. The whole shoot is very reminiscent of the brand's original campaigns. "Jennifer Lopez is a Guess Girl's dream! She is an accomplished artist; she is iconic and sensual," Paul stated in a press release. "Jennifer's impact and influence continues to grow and this campaign celebrates the notion that women get more beautiful and talented as they gain life experience. Her beauty and class shine through this campaign."

27 Times Selena Gomez's Outfit Expertly Showed Off Her Legs

Selena Gomez likes to experiment with her fashion choices, wearing designer dresses straight from the runway one day and sweatpants with heels to go to the airport the next. And even though her style is eclectic, there's one thing the "Bad Liar" singer does often: she chooses looks that showcase her killer legs.

We've compiled some of Selena's most Angelina Jolie-esque moments. Look ahead to see all the times the star opted for sexy up-to-there slits and leotards that made our jaws drop.

This Deliciously Minty Exfoliating Shampoo Cured Winter Flakes

If you're someone who's blessed with natural glossy hair that falls perfectly silky and frizz-free postwashing, I say, "Congratulations . . . go count your blessings!"

The rest of the world, myself included, has a much different hair-washing experience that involves panic, heartache (bye-bye, blowout), and strategic planning in order to whip our unruly manes into socially acceptable shape. Not only does wash day bring back the frizzy, untamed bends of my natural hair texture, but even the most nourishing formulas leave my scalp stripped and admittedly flaky (ugh!). That is, until this unassuming white tub of Briogeo Scalp Revival Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo ($42) came into my life and forever changed the shampoo experience. From the exfoliating bits that slough away flakiness to the dreamy minty scent, here's everything you need to know about the unique formula.

First Impressions

The thick charcoal cream looks more like a mask than a shampoo. Everything from the large tub to the dark gray gritty formula packed inside is misleading. But it all combines to deliver the most unique shampooing experience imaginable. It feels almost counterproductive rubbing dark gray cream over your hair in an effort to clean it, but one tszuj of the minty, refreshing formula and you might actually start to look forward to hair-washing day.

Pregnant? Stop Using This Common Skincare Ingredient ASAP

You know salicylic acid as the BHA hero that zaps your zits, but if you've recently become pregnant - or are thinking about becoming pregnant - then you may want to adjust the way you're using this ingredient in your skincare routine. We always say you should default to what your personal doctor advises, but to help jump start your research, we've consulted a few dermatologists about using salicylic acid while carrying.

What Is Salicylic Acid?

Briefly, salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that's typically used to treat skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, dandruff, and seborrheic dermatitis. In skincare, we often see it in topical form in cleansers, creams, wipes, and spot treatments. It helps encourage exfoliation, thereby preventing and treating blocked pores. Today, it's often made synthetically, but it was originally extracted from willow bark.

Should You Use Salicylic Acid While Pregnant?

As mentioned, salicylic acid is often seen in topical form. However, there's also an oral form, and both dermatologists we spoke to strongly advised against using oral salicylic acid while pregnant.

"Oral salicylic acid is a definite no," cautioned Dr. Mark Gray, a Harvard-trained pathologist and dermatologist and the founder of Ao Skincare. "It's part of the aspirin family, and it can cause bleeding and complications."

That's pretty straightforward! But what about the much more popular topical version?

"The FDA has rated salicylic acid as Pregnancy Category C, which means that its risk cannot be ruled out," explained dermatologist Dr. David Lortscher, the founder and CEO of Curology. He added, "Low concentrations and small amounts of salicylic acid found in skincare - no more than 2 percent for toners and washes - are generally considered safe. However, there is a concern when salicylic acid is used in higher concentrations such as in peels or over large areas of the body. To take the most cautious approach, avoid salicylic acid throughout your pregnancy."

Alternatives to Salicylic Acid

Fortunately, there are alternatives to salicylic acid that are pregnancy-approved and will help keep your skin clear.

"Glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, or witch hazel are all deemed OK to use topically during pregnancy," noted Dr. Gray. "Diet can help with pregnancy-related acne also. Eat things that are high in vitamin A, like carrots, milk and eggs, kale, spinach, and broccoli to name a few. If in doubt, consult a dermatologist."

A Final Word

Dr. Lortscher said that his general advice when you're pregnant is to minimize the use of any topical medication, and to only apply product to the problem areas of your face to minimizes exposure.

"All products should be reviewed with your obstetrician once you become pregnant," he added. "There are no prescription acne treatments that are FDA Pregnancy [Category] A, meaning none are proven to be 100 percent safe because the FDA never purposefully tests medications during a pregnancy. In an over-abundance of caution, we advise our patients to stop these as soon as they know they are pregnant, and to restart any non-retinoid topicals when they have their obstetrician's approval, which is usually at the end of the first trimester."

If Your Mascara Has Reached This Point, You Should Have Tossed It Long Ago

Mascara is kind of like dairy in the sense that one day it seems perfectly fine, and then - poof! - all of a sudden it's crumbly and weird and definitely needs to be tossed. The truth is that if your mascara has reached this point, well, it's probably been bad for a while. Curious about just how long mascara lasts - and signs that it's time to let it retire - we hit up Georgi Sandev, a celebrity makeup artist who's worked the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, and who's also worked with international brands such as Givenchy, Chanel, and Dior.

"The typical shelf life of mascara is six to eight months from opening it for the first time. If you are using all natural mascara, pay attention to the labels as that shelf life could be shorter," he said. "The easiest way to find out if your mascara is near the end of its life is when the product simply starts to under perform. For example, it feels dry, clumps too much, or just doesn't apply as easily any longer, or [if] the smell of it changes."

Sometimes your mascara may start to go bad before its expiration date, especially if you use it a ton or aren't using or storing it properly. Sandev shared a few tips for extending its life and keeping it in top notch condition.

  • Don't pump the mascara wand into the product when trying to pick it up from the tube. "This causes a lot of air to enter the tube and dries the mascara overtime. Instead try swirling the wand inside the tube," he noted.
  • Wash the wand once every couple of weeks with soap and hot water. He explained, "Overtime, the wand accumulates dry product and when that mixes with the fresh mascara inside the tube, it causes clumps on the lashes and little bits of product falling onto your skin."
  • For non-waterproof mascara, add a couple drops of generic eye drops, then close and shake. "This method works even better if you place the tube in hot water for four to five minutes before you add the drops. Make sure to wash the mascara wand with soap and hot water first."

What You Need to Know About the 6 Main Skincare Acids

If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the skincare world, know that you're not alone. There's a veritable alphabet soup of vitamins, a constant debate over silicones, preservatives, and alcohols, and a never-ending stream of words like "occlusives," "parabens," and "surfactants."

Though it's impossible to cover everything in a day (let alone a single article), we can start somewhere. And today, that somewhere is acids. With the help of board certified dermatologists, we're breaking down six different types of acids by explaining what they are and how they can benefit your skin.

The Flu Is So Bad This Year That Someone Created a Special Facial to Help You Recover

Raise your hand if you feel personally victimized by this year's flu. This year's dominant strain, H3N2, is wreaking havoc across the country. At best, it eats up people's sick days, but at its worst, this unusually strong illness is taking lives.

Of course, when you spend all day coughing up a lung in bed, any tangible skincare routine can go out the window. As Dr. Michele J. Farber of NYC's Schweiger Dermatology Group told POPSUGAR, "Having the flu can wreak havoc on your skin. The skin gets dry and irritated, eyes look puffy, and it's prime time for cold sores and other skin issues." So how can you (and your face) bounce back?

Esthetician Thai Morrison might have the answer. The owner of Koffee Day Spay in Houston has created a Flu Recovery Facial - and it sounds superluxurious. For real: I'm healthy as a horse right now (knock on wood), but I wouldn't mind sitting for this treatment myself.

The recovery facial works twofold: it reduces under-eye darkness while delivering a moisturizing boost to dry skin. If you can't spring for a trip to Houston to let Morrison do it herself, you can re-create the treatment at home. To start, wash your face with a hydrating oil rinse like Kanvas Flower Power Oil Wash ($27). Then, slough off dead skin cells with a scrub like Kanvas Complexion Citrus Scrub. After that, slather on a soothing toner like Avené Thermal Spring Water ($9).

The pièce de résistance? Sit back and relax while wearing a hydrating sheet like Kanvas Skincare Glow Mask ($32).

Morrison swears by this method, which she developed after succumbing to the virus herself. "I was down with the flu for almost a week and I wasn't looking or feeling my best," she said in a release sent to POPSUGAR. "I started treating my skin aggressively with the flu recovery facial I developed and was able to return to work with revived, glowing skin."

Here's to feeling better!

Glossier's Latest Skin-Saving Product Is Here - and We Tried It First!

When POPSUGAR Beauty Director Lauren Levinson waved a millennial pink, bubble-wrapped bag in front of my face, offering to let me try out the new, top-secret Glossier product, I practically snatched it out of her perfectly manicured hands.

After having great skin while using the Super Pure Serum ($28) a few years back, I have been itching to try out more from the brand. With my new assignment, I embarked on a skin experiment with Glossier's latest skincare product: Glossier Solution ($24).

Solution is an "exfoliating skin perfector" that is formulated with three active ingredients - BHA, AHA, and PHA - to slough away rough skin and reveal a more even skin texture through chemical exfoliation. If those acronyms make your head hurt, don't worry - skin care can get really confusing. To refresh your memory, we're going to explain those three powerful ingredients one at a time.

AHA stands for alpha hydroxy acid, a chemical exfoliant used for dry skin and evening out skin texture. The most commonly used forms of AHA are glycolic and lactic acid, and Solution contains both within its gorgeous pink container. The lactic acid helps reduce acne while the glycolic acid breaks up dead skin cells to improve the texture of your skin.

The second exfoliating ingredient is BHA, which is short for beta hydroxy acid. It's also known to us regular folks as salicylic acid, that product you see advertised on every drugstore acne wash you've ever used. It works by exfoliating within pores to break up oil bonds attached to dead skin cells. Salicylic acid in low amounts (Solution only has 0.5 percent) not only reduces acne, but also evens out your skin's texture and can even soothe irritated skin.

PHA is the less commonly known ingredient polyhydroxy acid. PHA is similar to AHA, but has the ability to improve the skin's surface strength while exfoliating and conditioning your complexion.

With all of this exfoliation, you might be worried that this product could irritate your skin. Luckily, Glossier was smart enough to also include skin soothers like aloe, glycerin, and niacinamide to calm your skin while it exfoliates.

With these three powerful ingredients wrapped up in one pretty, baby-pink bottle, I was excited to start my new skincare journey with almost a full month to use the product ahead of the January launch. The liquid itself is the consistency of a toner product and has a bit of a strong alcohol-soap smell. Despite the scent, it was extremely gentle on my chapped skin. Solution comes in a bottle with a pump, making it spill-proof (important to a klutz like me) and more sanitary (germs can't get inside as easily!). To use the product, press down on the pump with a cotton pad and wipe across your face. After waiting for the liquid to absorb into your skin, follow up with moisturizer.

In a few days, I noticed a significant change in my skin. It was smoother, it had fewer flakes from the harsh Winter, and my skin was starting to look less dull. After a few weeks of using the liquid on Glossier's new Cotton Rounds ($4) (which, by the way, are ultrasoft and embossed with Glossier's G logo), I noticed that the blackheads around my nose had disappeared and I had fewer breakouts other than the hormonal bumps I get around my chin. A month later, my skin is mostly clear and seems (mostly) unaffected by the intense temperature fluctuations New York City has been experiencing.

I'm really glad to report that this product did not disappoint. All of the ingredients seem to have been put into the product with a purpose, and therefore it didn't irritate or dry out my skin. I would recommend this product to anyone with acne-prone, slightly oily skin who wants to see an improvement in their skin texture. If you're looking for a way to limit breakouts, it's about time to give in to the Glossier hype and test this new baby out.

17 Must-Know Brands From the Indie Beauty Expo

For diehard beauty junkies, the Indie Beauty Expo is akin to Comic-Con. With shows in Los Angeles, Texas, and New York, consumers, professionals, and brands come together to get their fill of the latest and greatest in indie beauty. It's like unearthing diamonds in the rough; many brands featured at the trade show go on to dominate the beauty world.

Admittedly, some brands featured are toddlers in the industry, getting their feet wet with plenty of experience and social media frenzy. But for the most part, avid beauty shoppers enjoy the whimsy of learning about brands before everyone else, and brands appreciate getting a chance to get their product seen by hundreds of editors, reporters, influencers, shoppers, and other brands themselves. And if you're looking for clean products that are focused on delivering results the natural way, IBE is the place to find your new regimen.

Having tested every product on this year's list, here are the 17 must-know brands from the Los Angeles leg of the expo.

How to Overline Your Lips the Right Way, According to a Makeup Artist

People have done some crazy sh*t in pursuit of plump, full lips (Kylie Jenner Challenge, anyone?). In my younger and more vulnerable years, I admit to partaking in some questionable overlining. After backstalking through old Facebook pictures and practically gagging over my cartoonish attempts at overdrawing, I was afraid to pick up a lip pencil again. But Valentine's Day is coming up, and I want plush, pillow-like lips for the occasion. (Even though I currently have no plans other than curling up and watching the courtroom scene of Legally Blonde on repeat).

That's why I reached out to celebrity makeup artist Hrush Achemyan, who's a true overlining wizard. Her talents have graced the lips of Kim Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, and Christina Aguilera. But it was her work on Sarah Hyland at the Critics' Choice Awards that really caught my attention. Though Sarah's lips are clearly drawn out, the look somehow appears natural. I asked Hrush what's what.

"It's very easy to go wrong with lips," Hrush conceded. Her solution? Line the lips with a neutral shade before you add your red color. "When you do this, you are highlighting where you want to draw the eye. This is also a cool trick to keep the [red] line straight and clean." Hrush's go-to is Marc Jacobs Beauty Poutliner Longwear Lip Liner Pencil ($24).

But just that tip alone won't ensure that you've nailed the look. There's some technique involved in mastering things. Make sure you have a steady but light hand as you apply liner. Hrush put it like this: "Who has prettier handwriting - the person who presses the lead against paper and pulls it with force or the one who gently glides along their hand to create letters? A softer touch is always better."

But after you've applied your liner, don't go swiping your bullet lipstick up against your mouth. Instead, Hrush suggests applying lipstick with an angled liner brush, as it "gets into creases and makes seamless lines." To keep things looking soft and natural, "Go over your lip liner with lipstick, because it blends away any harsh lines." Hrush used Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Marc Liquid Lip Crayon in How Rouge! ($26).

Go forth and pout!

10 Skincare Rules For Preventing Fine Lines in Your 20s

I've reached that fun in-between stage with my skin where I still deal with regular breakouts, but I also have fine lines forming. Despite being "good" to my skin and developing an in-depth regime, I am not even in my mid-20s, and I find foundation settling into thin creases across my forehead. Because there aren't a lot of antiaging articles targeted at my age group, I wasn't sure how to get rid of these new line, or how to prevent new ones from forming.

Thus, I turned to the professionals! Here are a few tidbits of advice that can aid in preventing and erasing fine lines in your 20s, 30s, and beyond!

These Are the Exact Beauty Products Madelaine Petsch Wears as Cheryl on Riverdale

I watch Riverdale because I have the hots for Cole Sprouse, the plots are riveting (who the heck is Betty's brother?!), and gosh-dang is Madelaine Petsch gorgeous. The actress who plays Cheryl Blosson is the most exciting breakout beauty star I've seen in years. Whether I am obsessing about her perfect cherry-red lips and matching hair, or praying I can get my skin to look as poreless as hers, she compels my attention every time she comes on the screen.

To find out exactly which products she uses, I interviewed Riverdale's lead makeup artist, Erin Mackenzie. She shared the exact product lineup she uses on Madelaine for the show:

"Cheryl is a masterpiece!" she said. "We use an array of products to create her signature look, starting with NARS foundation and Tarte concealer with translucent powder to set. A combination of Lise Watier and It Cosmetics bronzers to sculpt and shape her face with MAC Blushbaby to give that perfect flush color. Lorac pro eye-shadow palette to naturally define her eyes with Benefit mascara to finish them off. MAC Strawberry blonde brow pencil to shape those great brows, and, of course, Lime Crime Red Velvet to create those PERFECT lips." (Sounds like Erin is an Ulta shopper.)

We also got into which products give Madelaine her porcelain skin.

"Madelaine is incredible with keeping her skincare regime on point, allowing us a great canvas to work off of," Erin said. "It's a must with the long shooting days and tons of travel she endures. And we swear by rose water spritzes throughout the day to refresh skin and awaken the senses. Can't live without it!"

Here at POPSUGAR, many editors have Mario Basescu Facial Spray With Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater on our desks - so we get it.

Please Stop "Baking" Your Under Eye

Your under-eye area is not a cake. The under-eye area is a delicate area of skin that should be nurtured and cared for tenderly. It should not be "baked."

Please consider the following questions carefully before you pile pounds of translucent powder under your eye: are you a celebrity that is followed by the flashbulbs of paparazzi photographers? Do you make a living off of taking "selfies" and creating social media posts? Are you a Kardashian?

If you answered "no" to any of these questions, then "baking" is not for you.

"While it is a technique that can work wonderfully when necessary; it is not a move for the masses."

This technique involves applying translucent powder, preferably the tried-and-true Laura Mercier Translucent Powder ($38), heavily to the under-eye area to set and highlight. After foundation and/or concealer is applied, a thick coat of powder is applied to the face (under the eyes and on the cheekbones, bridge of the nose, chin, and forehead for definition) and is left on to "bake" for 10+ minutes, using body temperature as the heat source. It is then dusted away with a fluffy brush. While it is a technique that can work wonderfully when necessary, it is not a move for the masses.

The skin surrounding the eye is thin and delicate and is where we show our first signs of aging. It is this area that first starts to crease and wrinkle as we age. The area that wrinkles so charmingly with our smiles and laughs in our youth suddenly betrays us as elasticity and collagen lessen. There are no oil glands surrounding our eyes, which is why eye cream is so imperative in halting the aging process. Keeping this area hydrated and plump is a must to keep a youthful look.

Add to this the fact that blood pools naturally under the eyes, creating dark shadows. Additionally, if one is prone to allergies, water retention, or too high of a sodium intake, the area under the eyes can be puffy and swollen.

Clearly, with all of this to consider, it is no wonder there are millions of products for brightening, tightening, and lightening the under-eye area.

As a regional artist for Laura Mercier for over a decade, I have enjoyed watching the Laura Mercier Translucent Powder rise in popularity as beauty bloggers have stated time and again that it is the best for "baking." While it is a tried and true technique that works for the people that it works for, I am here to tell you that just because your favorite beauty blogger tells you to do to do something doesn't mean that you should do it.

I spend time each day as a Laura Mercier artist in stores convincing women not to buy the powder if their plan is to pile it under their eyes, which will in most cases end up aging them 10 years or more. Most often, women will find that their under-eye concealer is too "wet" or "dewy," and they will want to mattify or set the product. This is an OK idea in theory. There are products that are produced for this very task, specifically Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder, which was Laura Mercier's original product created to set and brighten the under-eye area. This product is so finely milled that it won't ever get cakey or make your under-eye area look dry.

"The technique that promised bright beauty will suddenly find you looking like you are dying a slow death in the Sahara Desert."

The problem with using translucent powder to set the under eye (especially ones that are based in talc) is that it tends to get caught in fine lines and accentuate lines that were not visible without the powder. If you are a person that is flawed in the under-eye area at all (including but not limited to puffs, fine lines, or crow's feet), then this technique will age you beyond your years. As the day progresses and you smile and move your face, the lines will become worse and worse. The technique that promised bright beauty will suddenly find you looking like you are dying a slow death in the Sahara Desert.

The explosion of "baking" on the beauty blog stratosphere and how the results look in real life is the perfect example of how social media doesn't always translate. This trend, like many others that blow up via bloggers, looks amazing in a selfie taken with perfect lighting or a photo taken on the red carpet. Yet, most people who are following these tutorials are not on a red carpet and have to be mindful of how their looks translate in real life.

Maybe it will work for you, and maybe it won't. If you aren't sure, try it. If you look in the mirror and see a 90-year-old version of yourself looking back at you, then you know it's not for you. If you see a bright, polished woman looking back at you in the mirror . . . then you are one of the beauties who can benefit from this trick!

A Time-Traveling Rom-Com Is Coming to Netflix Just in Time For Valentine's Day

A new, original romantic comedy called When We First Met is coming to Netflix just in time for Valentine's Day, and the premise might make your head spin: what if you had one more chance to make the girl of your dreams fall in love with you? What if you had unlimited chances?

When Noah (Pitch Perfect's Adam DeVine) discovers a magical photo booth that sends him back in time by three years, he's able to relive the night he met Avery (Baywatch star Alexandra Daddario) over and over again, attempting to make sparks fly between them. Will it ever work, or are they destined to - dun, dun, dunnn - just be friends?

Admittedly the story sounds pretty similar to 2013's About Time, but since we're currently in a good rom-com drought, we'll take it. When We First Met hits Netflix on Feb. 9, and also stars Robbie Amell, Shelley Hennig, and Andrew Bachelor. Watch the first trailer above!

Bill Skarsgard Has a New Stephen King Project Coming, and It Looks Absolutely Chilling

If American Horror Story and Lost had a baby, and then that baby had another baby with Stephen King, it would probably look something like Hulu's upcoming TV series Castle Rock. The drama is from executive producer J.J. Abrams and the twisted mind of King, who's been using the fictional town of Castle Rock as a setting for a number of his novels over the years (The Dead Zone, Doctor Sleep, Revival). Although many specifics about the show are still under wraps, we do have a few ideas about where it's headed and who we'll see on screen.

Judging from the new trailer, above, the series will intertwine characters and themes from King's body of work. The exact plot is still just a little murky, but here's what goes down in the new footage: Henry Deaver (Moonlight's André Holland) arrives in the fictional town after getting "a call from Shawshank" prison (the very same from King's The Shawshank Redemption) and is later seen speaking to an inmate there (It's Bill Skarsgard). While investigating whatever it is in the prison that needs his attention - it seems to involve a suicide - Henry bumps into other odd people in the town: Ruth Deaver (clearly related to Henry, played by Sissy Spacek), Molly Strand (Melanie Lynskey), Alan Pangborn (Scott Glenn), and more.

Obviously the show boasts a rock-solid cast (pun intended), so we're even more excited for it to arrive on Hulu. So far the only premiere date we have for Castle Rock is at some point in Summer 2018. In the meantime, watch both the trailer and the initial teaser.

Evangeline Lilly Steals the Show in the First Kickass Trailer For Ant-Man and the Wasp

The first trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp is here! The action-packed sequel to the 2015 original finds Hope (Evangeline Lilly) and her father, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), on the run from the government thanks to some shenanigans Scott/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) got up to ("I do some dumb things, and the people I love the most pay the price," Scott intones in a voice-over). Fortunately Hope, who is now a superhero in her own right thanks to her high-tech Wasp suit, can handle it. While there's no sign of new cast member Michelle Pfeiffer, we do get a tiny glimpse of Laurence Fishburne's Dr. Bill Foster and a giant Hello Kitty Pez dispenser (yes, really). Watch the trailer above before it explodes into theaters on July 6.

16 Things We Know About The Handmaid's Tale Season 2

We're officially in some new fresh hell in 2018, and when it comes to The Handmaid's Tale, we're already looking ahead. If you read the book, you'll know that the first season finale ends in the same frustrating way the book ends: June is taken into a mysterious van and carted off to a mysterious future somewhere else. In this case, though, we don't have to wonder endlessly. How much can we uncover about the show's next chapter? Well, blessed be the fruit - we've got a lot to go over. Let's see what we could uncover (under his eye).

1. It's Going to Be Longer

While the first season was 10 episodes, the second has been extended to 13.

2. Alexis Bledel Will Reprise Her Role

Thought you'd seen the last of Ofglen/Emily? Not so fast. Bledel has been confirmed as part of season two's cast! We'll get a glimpse of Ofglen in the Colonies, the toxic wasteland where women who commit crimes are sent as punishment. "We get to see the colonies. It's a terrible place where they send Unwomen to work them to death," executive producer Bruce Miller said during a pre-Emmy panel in August. Bledel also commented on her character's new situation, saying, "I'm very interested to see what that looks like because it's a completely different world we haven't seen on the show yet - and I'm scared."

3. The Colonies Are Even Bleaker and Darker Than They Sound

A new feature by Marie Claire describes the Colonies in all their grim glory. As a refresher, the Colonies are where deviants (known as Unwomen) get sent for misbehaving. The new story describes the Colonies as "a dark and grime-filled wasteland." Costume designer Ane Crabtree offered a bit more insight. "The Unwomen are kind of the new Handmaids in season two. They're turning over soil, trying to move radiation, so they get filthy," she revealed. "They have probably six months - at best two years - to live. We're trying to show that humanity in their costumes. I made beautiful sheer pieces to be worn under their outfits since they strip down, as their clothing is full of radiation." Yikes.

4. The Trailer Is DARK

Here, we get a glimpse of all the mayhem that lies ahead. Offred is covered in blood and lighting things on fire! The Colonies are here, and they look f*cking awful! Tension is surely bubbling over, and we can't imagine what else this next bank of episodes might hold.

5. Surprise, Surprise: The President Has Inspired Parts of the Season

While season one of the show was planned before the 2016 election, the same is not true for season two. When it comes to some of Trump's "draconian policies," as Marie Claire phrases it, creator Bruce Miller can't help but incorporate today's reality into the fabric of the show. "Oh, I think we can't help but let it influence us," he said. "We have let it influence us. And there are a lot of issues we brought up last year that we want to address this year in ways we never had time to."

6. Things Are Only Going to Get Worse All Around

Earlier this month, The Pool interviewed Elisabeth Moss and grilled her on what's to come. "Wait till you see what's coming! It's going to get worse, girl. Season two is going to be bad too, really dark." Here we were, thinking June might have been rescued from the Waterfords. Maybe it's not that simple.

7. June Is Covered in Blood in a First Photo

You might remember how ruthlessly June is whisked away at the end of season one. We have no idea who takes her or where she even ends up. But if the first pictures of the season are any indication, she is certainly not safe. We're rooting for you, June!

8. June's Romance With Nick May Intensify

Elle ran a profile of Moss in early June, and she dropped a small tidbit about her Gilead lover, Nick. "It's part of the reason that I'm really excited about a season two, she's in this position where she might be in love with two people," Moss said, "Honestly, I think she does love Nick - if I can speak for her - but I don't know if she knows that she does yet. But she has a husband who she also loves, who's the father of Hannah, who she also now knows is alive."

9. Pay Attention to the Marthas

Showrunner Bruce Miller noted, "The Marthas in general in Gilead are kind of invisible . . . it's been great for us that it's been such a slow and careful building of a relationship between Rita and Offred. That slow and careful build-up in season one leads to a payoff so that we can use her more in season two."

10. We Might See Aunt Lydia's Backstory

Meanwhile, Miller also spoke to The New York Times about season two. Aunt Lydia could still play a key role in the show's next chapter. "Aunt Lydia is one of my most fascinating characters," Miller said. "We would like to explore her back story, and what the lives of the aunts are like."

11. The Mayday Resistance Is Another Key Component, but Let's Not Get Too Excited

It's easy to assume Mayday means salvation for the Handmaids, but not so fast. "The Mayday resistance is going to be a big part of Season two," Miller admitted. "The part that I've been thinking about is that Mayday is not the handmaid rescue organization - it's the anti-Gilead organization. And the anti-Gilead organization is not necessarily a friend to June or a friend to Handmaids. If I was going to try to hurt Gilead, the first thing I might do is kill all the handmaids. You're trying to weaken the state."

12. The Waterfords Aren't Necessarily Going Away

After the finale, Miller talked about what's to come. In regards to the Waterfords, he said, "They're still a part of our plans for season two but in interesting ways."

13. We Will Meet June's Mother

Miller also explained how June's parentage could factor into the story. Miller spoke about June's mother: "We've been thinking about her a lot. June's mother is a big character in the book and representative of an interesting kind of feminism that was seemingly more of that time."

14. The Theme

"At the end of season one, we find out June was pregnant. The theme of season two is motherhood and what it means to be a mother," Miller explained at The Handmaid's Tale panel in August. "It's the way we mother our good friends and the people in our lives."

15. Luke and Moira Might Attempt a Daring Rescue

During the panel in August, Samira Wiley discussed the new possibilities season two holds since it's going beyond the story of the book. "The [first] season ends exactly where the book ends, and to be able to go in season two not knowing what's going to happen and to be in this completely new country with Luke who's the only family I have, it's exciting to see what's going to happen," she said.

16. The Premiere Date Has Been Set

The second season is going to drop on April 25. Are you ready for it?

Oh Sh*t! Do I Want Another Baby?

I've always been very firm and confident about my decision to have two children. Sometimes I frame it in a self-deprecating sort of way (i.e., I would probably go crazy or start drinking wine at lunch if I had more). Sometimes, I point to the numbers game - two kids, two parents, makes sense to me. Other times, I tell myself that limiting our family to two kids means they each get more attention, time, and financial resources (in other words, having just one sibling is in their best interests).

But just recently, as my youngest child's fourth birthday got closer and closer, I started having a new, unfamiliar, and much less comfortable feeling about the perfect number of children I've been so confident about. Like, maybe I should have had one more.

I understand that baby fever is probably a natural reaction for any mom who's saying a final goodbye to the baby/toddler stage. Those years are so physically exhausting and overwhelming, but they're also extremely purposeful. Never again will our children have such immediate needs and require so much from us 24 hours a day. Every mom of small children occasionally daydreams about the future, when we'll drop off our kids for a full day of school and they'll be able to dress and feed and entertain themselves. But once that day arrives, our reaction to being needed less is probably more complicated than simple joy.

I love this new stage my children are entering (my oldest turns 7 in a couple of months). They are becoming more and more independent, and their developing personalities continue to delight my husband and me. But I also have a phantom itch for the singular purpose of 3 a.m. feedings and diaper changes and naptime struggles. I've been all-in moming for so long now that I've forgotten there's a world that doesn't center around meeting the all-encompassing demands of tiny humans.

So, like any mommy masochist, I feel a part of myself wishing for more of the pain that comes with high-risk pregnancies, sleepless nights, cracked nipples, and doing everything with one arm because the other is holding a baby.

And then I look at my now 4-year-old, who ran into my room yesterday morning and, seeing his dad, sister, and me cuddling in bed, asked, "Can I join this party?" I remember how lovely it is to have a few hours on the days he's in preschool to run errands or just be in my home alone, when I can tidy up a room and know it will still be neat five minutes later. I think about how nice it is that we're going to movies and dinners and museums together as a family, knowing everyone will enjoy the experience and the odds of a major meltdown are becoming slimmer and slimmer.

And I remember that shortly after my daughter's seventh birthday, I'll celebrate my 39th. I think about how much harder a pregnancy would be now than at 34, how much more exhausting it would be to get my daughter on a bus at 7:30 a.m. every school morning after being up with a baby all night. And I realize that the baby itch is not one I should scratch. There are other ways to grow our family - namely by adding a four-legged member. I'm mailing our deposit for a puppy today.

Mom Makes a Case For Referring to Kids as Assh*les, and the Internet Applauds

Image Source: Stocksnap / Hunter Johnson

Let's take a quick minute to be honest here: raising kids isn't always a picnic. Sure, we love them to bits and they certainly make our lives better by existing, but that doesn't mean they're always perfect. In fact, they can be little turds a lot of the time! Or, as one mom on Twitter so aptly put it, they can be "assh*les."

The relatable (and hilarious) tweet about kids' less-than-angelic tendencies began going viral on Instagram as parents voiced their agreement about the sentiment that we should call it like we see it.

Nobody is advocating calling your toddler an assh*le to their face. But when you're relaxing with a glass of wine around other parents, should it really be frowned upon to complain about that assh*le move your kid pulled in the midst of their "Terrible Twos" tantrum at the grocery store or when they intentionally poured milk on your mattress? We think not, and based on the responses to the tweet, other parents agree!

Kids are like cats - they can sometimes be assh*les, but they're cute enough to make up for it.

I Finally Found a Makeup Primer That Helps Cover My Dark Acne Scars

As a longtime acne sufferer, my face has quite a few scars that are hard to cover up. I recently started using this Clarins SOS Primer in Coral ($39) and have been fielding compliments daily on how good my skin looks.

The brand just released a line of primers that comes in six different shades. Each one helps address concerns for various skin conditions. The hydrating formula contains sea lily and white tea, which soothe your skin. Mother-of-pearl pigments also help to even out your complexion. I prefer the coral shade, which reduces the appearance of dark spots.

My makeup routine has always consisted of sunscreen, foundation, and powder. Never have I thought about using a primer before. I have to admit, I always get a little nervous to try new things because my problematic skin is so sensitive - I didn't want the formula to cause a break out.

After the first application, I immediately thought, "how have I been living without this?" This consistency is silky smooth, and my skin soaks it right up. Before I even apply my foundation, my skin instantly looks more even, brighter, and glowing. Once I follow up with my usual products, it makes my makeup look even better. I have been using it for a week now, and I can't believe how clear my face looks. I haven't noticed any abnormal breakouts either.

From combating redness to ridding my complexion of dullness, this product truly works. Check out the brand's other shades ($39) and see which one is perfect for you.

Beard Burn Is Really a Thing, and Here's How to Deal With It

Even if you're not totally down with the beard gang, you have to admit there's something about facial hair that is just sexy AF. Want to know what's not sexy though? The red, stinging, irritated skin that can come from kissing a face full of hair. Sure, it's a risk worth taking, but even if you're not doing any superheavy smooching, you still may notice tingling, almost rug-burned skin afterward.

That's called beard burn. On the surface, your skin may also look slightly swollen and dry. Dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe shared three easy solutions for saving your skin after a heavy (or light) make-out session.

Suggest Some Grooming Swaps

If this one is too good to give up, you've got to speak up. Try communicating with your partner, and let him know this is an issue for you. Offer some grooming suggestions that can benefit the both of you. "It helps if the guy's beard is softened and cleaned by shampoo and conditioner but also a natural seed oil, which will aid in lubricating the skin," Bowe said.

Adjust Your Regimen

In case of an unexpected beard burn, you'll want to have a few products on hand with nonirritating ingredients to help calm and heal sensitivity and redness. Dr. Bowe recommends adding a topical probiotic like Tula Multi-Spectrum Overnight Skin Rescue Treatment ($85). Some probiotic skincare products have actual live bacteria or a bacterial derivative that when directly applied to the skin's surface can help to calm inflammation in the skin.

Cover With Correctors

To help neutralize any redness in the skin from the irritation, try a color corrector like bareMinerals Correcting Concealer SPF 20 ($21) to even out imperfections in the skin.

Steer Clear of Fragrance

"Be careful of using moisturizers with fragrance in them while your skin is still experiencing irritation as it can cause discomfort," Bowe adds. She also advises against exfoliating, particularly on sore spots. It'll add more distress to your already-raw skin.

Seek Out Soothers

This includes ingredients like aloe vera, green tea, and as previously mentioned, probiotics. Look for these kind of skin calmers in products like Dr. Jart Ceramidin Gel-Cream ($49) "Some probiotics can boost the skin's production of ceramides which help to lock in your skin's moisture, thereby protecting and strengthening your skin's natural barrier from any irritations," Bowe concludes.

See, there's no need to forfeit a good time in the name a beauty. So go ahead, and kiss all up on that man.
