Even if an airline cancels your flight due to weather conditions or issues outside of its control, it's still your responsibility to take the necessary steps for compensation. AirHelp will first determine whether or not you're eligible for financial compensation. How Traveling Has Taught Me to Calm the F*ck Down

My fiancé looked up at me with apologetic eyes before returning his gaze to the map screen on his phone. Our train had arrived in Venice on a hot but beautiful afternoon, and we decided to walk to our hotel near Piazza San Marco. Two hours later, there we were - suitcases in tow and still no idea where we were going.

I was always dubbed high strung growing up, and nothing prodded my anxiety more than getting lost in an unfamiliar place. As a kid, it was a fear of misplacing my parents at a crowded event, and the uneasiness continued into my adult years. As my love for travel grew, I would spend hours detailing routes and printing maps to ensure I always knew exactly how to find my way. Three years ago, if you asked me how I would react to walking in circles for hours in a city where I only barely spoke the language, I would've replied: straight-up panic mode.

But I wasn't panicking. Instead, I was seeing flashes from experiences past. I thought about the time I was, as a junior in college, meeting my mom in New York City and her flight was delayed three hours. I had never been in an airport that large by myself. Everyone seemed to know where they were going and flew past me in haze of dark colors and designer luggage. Never having actually taken a taxi and knowing nothing about airport taxi protocol, I tried to step into the street and hail one outside airport pickup (after all, I had seen how people do it on TV). He swerved, honked, and barreled past me. Defeated, I went back inside and waited. (There might have been tears. It's all a blur.)

I thought about the time my then-boyfriend and I got stuck in a massive rainstorm in a tiny Thai village about a 30-minute walk from our hotel. I was over my taxi naivety at this point, but here, they were not a thing. The only way back was our own two feet. I also remembered the time our train dropped us off in the pitch black night at the foot of a mountain, with nothing but a winding road to lead us up to the coastal Italian town where we were staying. I could barely see my hands in front of me, and that old familiar feeling of panic began to creep in.

But here's the thing. All these experiences, as debilitating as they seemed at the time, didn't squash my fervor for exploration. In fact, they shaped it. On my New York visit, I would go on to fall so in love with the city that in five years' time, I would move there. In Thailand, an incredibly kind bar owner would take pity on us sopping wet traveler, and open his doors early to take us in. He opened a few beers and we sat for hours exchanging stories and learning more about each other's cultures. And in that sleepy Italian town, where the journey to find our Airbnb literally made my hair stand on end, I would get engaged to the love of my life.

I learned that some of my greatest memories stemmed from uncomfortable beginnings. Flights get delayed, weather forecasts can be horribly incorrect, and trains will drop you off in some pretty questionable places. Sometimes, regardless of how hard you study a map, you just get lost. After hours of dead ends, we finally made it to our Venetian hotel. But I never got upset; I just enjoyed the ride.

Every Change to Expect From Alaska Airlines as It Completes the Merge With Virgin America

Now that Alaska Airlines and Virgin America are officially considered a single airline by the FAA, Alaska is one giant step closer to completing the merge. Though Virgin America's name and logo will be retired by 2019, travelers can expect to see many of their favorite brand elements integrated throughout Alaska's transformation.

Since acquiring Virgin America in 2016, Alaska Airlines has already undergone several changes, including an addition of 82 new routes, which is the most West Coast nonstop destinations of any airline. But that's only just the beginning. As we bid farewell to Virgin America, we welcome a new and improved Alaska Airlines.

Here's what you can expect over the course of this year:

January 2018

  • Jan. 1: Virgin America's Elevate Points loyalty program merged with Alaska's Mileage Plan. Members have until Jan. 31 to self-convert their points. Otherwise, it will automatically be done for you by Feb. 8.
  • Jan. 18: Alaska Airlines will unveil its new crew uniforms created by Seattle designer Luly Yang, which will officially roll out in 2019.

March 2018

  • Alaska Airlines will begin to add high-speed satellite WiFi to its Boeing and Airbus aircrafts.

April 2018

  • Alaska Airlines will open its New York (JFK) lounge.
  • April 24: Travelers will no longer be able to book flights through Virgin America. Site visitors will instead be redirected to AlaskaAir.com where they'll enjoy a single Alaska Airlines shopping, booking, and airport check-in.

2019

  • Alaska Airlines and Virgin America will officially operate under one brand and name.
  • The airline will build a $650 million, 20-gate North Satellite facility, which will include a 15,000-square-foot flagship lounge.

Other Major Changes to Come

  • Alaska's Boeing planes will feature new, modern interiors with blue mood lighting.
  • Its airport area will play music to celebrate its West Coast roots.
  • The interiors of Alaska's Airbus planes will be replaced to include new seats, carpets, and lighting. The number of first class seats will be increased while a premium class will be introduced.
  • Travelers will be able to enjoy over 200 free movies, TV shows, and free texting directly from their device.
  • West Coast-inspired food and beverage choices will expand to include healthy options and full-pour regional wine and microbrews on board.
  • More travel options for the greater Seattle area will be offered.

Game of Thrones Fans, You'll Want to Book the Night King Suite at This Ice Hotel ASAP

Of all the fantastical settings in Game of Thrones, one of the most appealing - and certainly the most hygge - is the Stark House dwelling, Winterfell. Equal parts icy and cozy (thanks to furs, roaring fires, and good company), Winterfell and its northern counterparts have always been out of our reach due to the limitations of reality vs. fiction; but now, a Finnish ice hotel is making it possible for guests to experience Winterfell, Castle Black, and icy abodes beyond the Wall. Lapland Hotels Snow Village will boast a Game of Thrones theme until it closes for the season on April 30 thanks to a partnership with HBO Nordic.

The show theme might mean you stay in a suite where a massive, sculpted White Walker watches over your bed at night, or perhaps Ghost will guard you while you sleep. Prices for the GOT "Snow Suites" range based on the number of guests, but it's definitely an experience you'll never forget! There are also two ice eateries inspired by the show: a restaurant and a bar. This App Actually Rewards You (and Gives Back!) For the Hours You Spend Unplugged

Knowing the benefits of unplugging versus actually doing it are two very different things. But what if there was an incentive to put away your devices? Meet Lilspace, an app that not only rewards you with perks but also supports the causes you care about most in return for spending time offline.

Here's How It Works

First, download the app for your iOS or Android device, and sign up. Once you create an account, you'll be asked to select at least three areas you'd like to focus on while you unplug, like reading or relationships. Then, hit "Unplug Now" on your home screen and start practicing being present! Every minute you spend offline will then be tracked to your account, which allows you to redeem certain perks from businesses and organizations that Lilspace partners with.

For example, in the month of January, the Lilspace community focused its efforts on the nonprofit organization LA Family Housing, one of the largest homeless service providers in Los Angeles. The goal was to collectively reach 100 hours of unplugged time in order for The Cohan Team of Keller Williams to donate meals to the center's residents. Another partner, Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust, rewards visiting app users with gift shop discounts for putting their phones away during their museum experience. The app also allows Android users to set auto replies to incoming texts and calls during their time away from their phone.

Snapchat's New Filters Turn the Sky Into Stunning Masterpieces

Say goodbye to those cliched Snaps of sunsets and cloudless skies: with Snapchat's new sky filters, you can add a rainbow, make it a starry night, or create a beautiful sunset on any photo you take. The new feature is yet another example of the company being innovative in using augmented reality to enhance your everyday world.

To use the new filters, just take a photo that includes the sky. Snapchat will automatically detect the photo has the sky in the background and will let you swipe through to find a sky filter. You can expect to first see filters like a starry night or stormy clouds, but just like the 3D Bitmoji, these will change daily. The feature started rolling out to iOS and Android users on Sept. 25.

Unlike 3D World Lenses, you don't need to tap the screen to activate the filters - they just show up, like how the altitude, speed, time, and geofilters already do. Ahead, see some of the filters we've been able to play around with, then give them a try on your phone.

Happy Groundhog Day! Here's What Punxsutawney Phil Predicts For 2018

Thanks in large part to the so-called bomb cyclone, the East Coast has had one hell of a brutal Winter. And if one age-old tradition is any indication, the arctic chill isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

On Feb. 2, thousands gathered in Punxsutawney, PA, to see if the small town's most famous animal, Punxsutawney Phil, would reveal a shadow when he emerged from hibernation. According to local lore - this was the 132nd annual Groundhog Day event, so it's been around for quite some time - if the groundhog sees his shadow upon leaving his hole, an additional six weeks of Winter are ahead.

It's this quirky tradition that inspired the 1993 Bill Murray-led movie of the same name, and naturally, we all had our fingers crossed that the shadow would be MIA, granting us a glorious reprieve from the freezing weather. No such luck, it would seem; according to Phil and his good friend Gen. Beauregard Lee in Georgia, we've still got a bit more Winter to go this year.

But don't completely write off an early taste of Spring this year just yet - there was one dissenter, Staten Island Chuck, who predicted a quick demise of the cold snap of 2018. Naturally, there's no real way to predict this type of thing outside of lore and tradition, but this writer, personally, is going all in on Team Chuck. Even if he's in the vast minority, why not kick off February with a little positivity?

The Internet Is in a Tizzy Over What Color These Sneakers Actually Are

Move over, The Dress. There's a new optical illusion in town, The Sneaker, and it's blowing minds and starting fights all across the internet.

It's been more than two years since The Dress divided households around the world into two camps: those who saw blue and black and those who swore it was white and gold. In the second week of October, however, it became instantly clear that there was a far more polarizing argument to be had. When you look at The Sneaker, do you see gray and teal? Or do you see pink and white? And, more importantly, is it even possible to see what it is that the opposing side sees?

The 4 Pieces of Advice Barack Obama Gave Donald Trump on Inauguration Day

As President Donald Trump prepared to take office on Inauguration Day, Barack Obama quietly vacated the West Wing. But Obama left something behind during his exit: a letter, one that traditionally passes between two presidents as the highest office in the land changes hands. "We just went to the Oval Office and found this beautiful letter from President Obama. It was really very nice of him to do that," Trump bragged to the press several days later, adding, "We won't even tell the press what's in that letter."

On Sept. 2, CNN finally obtained that letter, exclusively. The missive is a reminder of the grace and well-spoken nature of the 44th president and a testament to the time he spent reflecting on the state of the union. Most notable, however, are the incredibly astute pieces of advice that Obama wanted to pass on to the new commander-in-chief. From a tip on leadership to a reminder about the importance of those you surround yourself with, the gracious "reflections" feel like a stolen moment between two incredibly powerful men.

SNL's Melania Trump Gets "Advice" From Jackie Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, and Michelle Obama

Melania Trump clearly has her work cut out for her as first lady, but who did she turn to for advice while preparing to attend the State of the Union? If it's the Melania in the Saturday Night Live universe, this time played by Cecily Strong (who pulled double duty and also popped up as White House Communications Director Hope Hicks during the cold open), she merely needs to call on former first ladies Jackie Kennedy (Natalie Portman), Hillary Clinton (Kate McKinnon), Martha Washington (Aidy Bryant), and Michelle Obama (Leslie Jones).

Fortunately for stressed-out Melania, all of the women appeared to console her and also dole out wisdom like: "Melania, I feel your pain, but you married him. And like America, you had a choice, so don't choose to eat 7-11 sushi and then come to me saying, 'Something's wrong!'" (Obviously that line came from McKinnon's Clinton.) At the very least, it's still better advice than what the first lady would have gotten if she had asked Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who probably would've just told her to "smile more."

Nope, You're Not Crazy - Your Bitmoji on Snapchat's Snap Map Do Change

If you can't stop opening up Snapchat and checking in on Snap Map, we don't blame you. The feature, which offers a fun, instant way to check in on what your friends are up to, is quickly becoming addictive. And with Bitmoji on the map, it's hard not to check back often. The Bitmoji (now called Actionmoji) on the map will change and show up riding in cars and airplanes or taking part in activities like building a sandcastle on the beach.

The Actionmoji change depending on a variety of factors, like your location, time of day, and how fast you're traveling. Most of the time, you'll see your Actionmoji simply standing wherever you are. But if you're near an airport, you might see yourself in a plane. Driving? You'll suddenly be in a car on Snap Map as well.

Just when I thought I couldn't be any more concerned for our country, Match hit us with a pretty shocking statistic. Turns out, one in four single Americans admit to being down to have sex with a robot. I know dating's tough, but . . . look to the person to your right. Then to the person to their right. The following person would have sex with a robot - or maybe that 25 percent is you. Plot twist. I mean, hey, to each their own!

The dating site's Singles in America 2018 survey looked at the dating habits of over 5,000 singles in the US, beyond the Match community. Among its many findings, this reveal was the most interesting by far. Thirty-one percent of men responded "yes," and 15 percent of women did. What's even more intriguing is that half of respondents would consider it cheating if their partner got it on with a robot. Would you?

7 Features That Finally Make the New Apple Watch Worth It

Despite releasing the Apple Watch Series 2 just one year ago in September 2016, Apple has decided to amp up its game with a new device in the lineup: the Apple Watch Series 3. However, unlike the previous two models, this Apple Watch finally comes with LTE service. Find out what else Apple revealed about the Apple Watch Series 3 at an event on Sept. 12:

  1. It has cell service: You no longer need your iPhone near you at all times to receive or make calls on the Apple Watch!
  2. It shares the same number as your personal phone: Instead of coming up with a new number and giving it to your friends and family, it'll carry the same one as your personal phone.
  3. It has a new crown color: The crown, instead of matching whatever color your watch is, will be red.
  4. It'll come in the following colors: Gold aluminum, silver aluminum, and space gray, as well as a gray version in ceramic.
  5. New sports and Hermés bands: The Apple Watch Series 3 will be available with a more breathable sports loop band, as well in new Hermés styles and watch faces.
  6. It still has some of the awesome features of Apple Watch Series 2: It'll still come with a built-in GPS tracker and have a water resistance of 50 meters.
  7. A new watchOS: With watchOS 4, out on Sept. 19, the Apple Watch will come with a slew of new features, like smart activity coaching, new Toy Story watch faces, and a new Heart Rate app that can measure your heart rate while it's resting, during a workout, and while it's recovering.

What Iskra Lawrence *Really* Thinks About Before-and-After Weight-Loss Photos

If you're on Instagram (or any social media platform, for that matter), you're bound to run into side-by-side weight-loss photos at some point that display an incredible transformation. While these photos are so inspiring and encouraging for many of us, we can't help but wonder whether it can be triggering for others, especially those who struggle with body-image issues or even live with an eating disorder.

We asked Iskra Lawrence, body-positive activist, model, and creator of the lifestyle platform Every Body With Iskra, to give us her thoughts about these kinds of pictures. Before you ask, no, she's not against them. She does want all of us to remember a few important things when we look at them, though.

"For a lot of people, [before-and-after photos] are a really motivating indicator for how far you've come," Iskra told POPSUGAR. "But unfortunately, a lot of people try to validate how serious something was or how successful something was by a more dramatic before-and-after."

In other words, we can't allow ourselves to totally get lost in the visuals of these pictures and put a greater value on the more drastic before-and-after photos. Health and wellness isn't only defined by someone's looks. "Whenever we're doing a comparison, even with ourselves, you don't just compare those photos, you then compare how drastic your weight loss was or your eating disorder was," Iskra added. And that's not a healthy mindset to be in.

In an attempt to add some body diversity to today's social media climate, Iskra posted her own before-and-after a few weeks ago. But it wasn't the kind we're used to seeing. It showed her healthy weight gain, and she wrote about how different she feels today compared to when she was "skinny." She's now healthier, happier, and much more confident in her own skin.

"I had a lot of people say, 'Well, you didn't look that anorexic, so it can't have been that bad,' and that's really awful and a shame," she shared with us. "It's almost like you have to prove that you were really, really slim and unwell - and then you're more valid to talk about that topic."

Iskra translates that to the traditional before-and-after weight-loss posts. She pointed out that a person who visibly lost a great deal of weight "will probably be celebrated more online." People will likely comment and tell them they did an amazing job, and that's great! But what about the person who "could have stayed the exact same size or gained muscle?" Iskra asked. And what about others who have experienced just as much of a transformation, yet don't have dramatic photos to prove it? Their life has changed just as much; they feel strong and badass after learning how to, say, box or lift weights, and they deserve to be celebrated too.

"You can't necessarily show that in a before-and-after," she said. "So it comes with educating the viewer. We need to say this doesn't invalidate anyone who doesn't have a dramatic before-and-after."

The keto diet is inarguably the most debated diet of 2017; while some dietitians are warning against it, there are countless success stories of massive weight breakthroughs through the use of keto. But regardless of what camp you fall into, we need to debunk something here and now: the keto diet isn't a trend, and it's not a Pinterest diet . . . and it shouldn't be treated as such.

"The ketogenic diet works when no other diet will," clinical nutritionist Dr. Josh Axe, DNM, DC, CNC, told POPSUGAR. And that's because you're (in most cases) drastically changing the macronutrient distribution of your diet and drastically changing the type of fuel your body is receiving (ketones from fat vs. glucose from carbs). This isn't a matter of cutting calories or eating less dessert. "The ketogenic diet is a medical diet breakthrough to overcome any plateaus, whether it be balance blood sugar, stop neurological symptoms, or just lose the last 10 pounds of stubborn belly fat," said Dr. Axe. And that's just it - it's a medical diet.

Thanks to a major surge in interest on Instagram and Pinterest (hello, keto dessert recipes), the diet has taken off. It was the #6 diet search term on all of Google in 2017, and the #keto hashtag on Instagram has over 4 million photos. Search "keto" on Pinterest and you'll be served with hundreds of thousands of recipe ideas, tips, and infographics, with more added by the hour. In that sense, it is trendy, but that in and of itself completely overlooks how serious of a change this diet will be to your health, even if it is a positive change. This diet is specific, purposeful, and meant to treat a problem or symptom, and it should be taken seriously! Do your research. Before you start your diet, consider what your goals are and discuss them with a medical professional - and not just for planning and preparation. When doctors put patients on the keto diet, they're also monitoring blood levels and cholesterol to ensure that the diet is working and not causing any adverse side effects. Just an FYI: you can't get your cholesterol checked online. So make sure, if you're following a trend that impacts your health, do so with medical supervision (this extends beyond the keto diet and applies to any major dietary changes).

Dr. Axe has told POPSUGAR that the goal of the keto diet is not to be a long-term lifestyle change, but rather a breakthrough diet for certain medical conditions and obesity. "When I put my patients on it, it has been for a maximum of three months. I know some people who have been on [the keto diet] and have done it for a year and done well with it. But I don't think people should be on a ketogenic diet fully for more than a year - absolutely not for more than a year."

This diet may be an excellent tool for your symptom treatment or weight-loss breakthrough. That said, there are a few groups of people who should not be on the keto diet, including anyone with liver or gallbladder disease and pregnant women.

Changing how you fuel yourself is serious business, so please treat your diet seriously. While there are beauty trends, travel trends, and restaurant trends, the trends in health tend to have more ramifications - and your safety is most important!

Bob Harper wants to put carbs back on your plate. In his new book, The Super Carb Diet: Shed Pounds, Build Strength, Eat Real Food, he described the word "carb" as "the most terrifying of all the four-letter words." In the introduction to his new diet and new lifestyle, he promises to change your perception of carbohydrates and give you your power back.

This is a new change for Bob. After suffering a massive heart attack earlier this year, he took his recovery seriously and began to make serious changes to his diet.

"After my heart attack, I was searching for a way to balance my diet without gaining weight," Bob said in his book. "I needed a diet high in nutrients that would help me maintain my weight and give me the energy I needed to recover . . . The dieting world went back in time to find variations of the caveman diet, but I found those high-protein plans had too much fat and weren't so great for my heart. They didn't work for me. They left my body off balance."

Bob told POPSUGAR that he had fallen into this caveman diet thanks to external influence from his community. "I have been in the CrossFit world for several years now and it seemed like for the longest time Paleo was the diet many CrossFitters were talking about, so I decided to give it a try," he told us. "The problem that I faced was my craving for certain complex carbohydrates, so for me it was difficult to sustain. That is why I worked on developing the super carb diet. I wanted to put a balance back into my eating habits and incorporate all the macronutrients on my plate."

His book also calls attention to current diet trends and their pitfalls. "Trendy diets tell you that you can't have carbs," Bob wrote. "But I want bread. So does Oprah. So do you. I want to eat a sandwich at lunch without feeling like I'm committing a crime. Did you know a sandwich isn't a sandwich unless there's bread?" Preach, Bob!

Are you ready to have a few more carbs on your plate? Get your power back? Bob's diet isn't a steady wave of pasta, but you will definitely see some whole grains in there. If you've been hitting the weight room but aren't seeing a difference in results or don't feel challenged enough, it could mean you're not lifting as heavy as you should be. To really test your strength and limits, it's best to go up in weights on a regular basis so you can better track results and see steady and consistent progress over time.

When deciding how to proceed, you'll want to be careful so you don't overwhelm yourself or put too much pressure on the body, as this can lead to injury or overuse. However, as long as you transition with care and patience, you'll be able to avoid getting hurt and work toward seeing some excellent fitness benefits. Here are four signs you're not using the right weights and should go up in size.

You Breeze Through Reps

If you're lifting and squatting with ease, it means you're not challenging yourself as you should. "If you're able to do about 15 to 20 reps without feeling tired or in need of a short break after, you're probably not lifting as heavy as you're capable of," Rebecca Gahan, CPT, owner and founder of Kick@55 Fitness in Chicago, told POPSUGAR. "You should really feel those last two or so reps, where you're pushing yourself," says Gahan. However, be mindful: you'll need to still maintain good form in order to avoid injury or overuse. "Don't go too heavy to where you're compromising form," said Gahan.

You Don't See Progress in Muscle Tone

You should be able to see your muscles getting leaner and stronger over time with each increase in weight, says Gahan. "As you're shocking and surprising your muscles with new weights and challenges, muscle tone should improve," said Gahan. "When you stay at the same weight for too long, you're no longer breaking through that plateau to trigger progress and build more muscle."

Your best bet is to increase each body part at a steady rate. "If you are being consistent with your training, it could take two to four weeks to make small increases in weight. The upper body may result in a five to 10 percent weight increase, and lower body compound movements, like squats and deadlift variations, can result in a 15 to 20 percent increase," Ronnie Lane, a personal trainer in Florida, told POPSUGAR.

You've Mastered the Form Perfectly

If you've become an expert with a specific exercise, it's time to increase those weights safely. "Once you've mastered any movement pattern under control and are activating the proper muscles utilized for that exercise, then you will increase the load of the weight," said Lane. However, be sure you don't do it before perfecting that form. "The effects of lifting heavy without proper form could lead to serious injury, especially for anything that loads your spine, like back barbell squats, barbell deadlifts, etc. These exercises require that you to brace your core and keep a neutral spine alignment."

You Can Do an Extra 2 Reps With Heavier Weights

If you are easily able to do an extra two reps with the heavier weights, it means you're ready to start working out with the heavier equipment, said Sarah Walls, personal trainer and owner of SAPT Strength & Performance Training, Inc. Make sure to go gradually and pick the right weights. Walls recommends increasing your weight by "five pounds for upper body and 10 pounds for lower body."

If weight loss is on your list of New Year's resolutions, you'll soon be putting together a healthy meal plan (let's just enjoy the holidays first, OK?), and no doubt there will be a few smoothies thrown in there. Smoothies are a great option for a healthy breakfast or snack because they are easy and quick and you can pack a lot of nutrition into just one glass.

Chocolate Chips

We'd all love for our smoothies to taste just like a chocolate milkshake, but if you go this route, the calories and sugar can add up fast. One-quarter cup of semisweet chocolate chips will add 280 calories and 32 grams of sugar to your smoothie! You can slash major calories and all of the sugar by subbing cacao nibs or unsweetened cocoa powder instead. If you can't resist that chocolate milkshake, try this vegan chocolate milkshake smoothie instead.

Honey

Just because Winnie the Pooh can survive off honey doesn't mean that you can (not that we don't love his little bear belly). Lots of smoothie recipes include honey (or other liquid sweeteners), but they aren't necessary. Just a few tablespoons of honey can add almost 200 calories to your smoothie. Fruit is plenty sweet on its own, so there's really no reason to add extra sweeteners on top of it. Visser also suggests using spices like cinnamon and vanilla to "give a smoothie plenty of sweetness without the added sugar." This almond strawberry-banana yogurt smoothie is sweet as can be, with no added sugar in sight.

Too Much Nut Butter

We are big (OK, huge) fans of peanut butter, but you've got to keep the spoonfuls in check if weight loss is your goal. Visser says, "Nut butters are great for satiety, which can actually help with weight loss." A tablespoon of peanut butter carries about 100 calories, and that is just for the no-sugar-added varieties. We won't deny you if banana and peanut butter is your thing, but it's best to measure out the nut butter until you've done it enough times to easily eyeball it.

Fruit-Flavored Yogurt

Yogurt gives smoothies their, well, smooth texture, and avoiding the fruit-flavored varieties is "key to avoiding too much sugar," according to Visser. An eight-ounce container of plain, nonfat Chobani yogurt has only four grams of sugar, but if you opt for the Banana Fruit on the Bottom instead, you'll be getting 14 grams. That may not seem like a big difference, but it adds up. If you want to get that sweet fruit flavor, stick with real fruit so you can get some fiber. Here are a few yogurt-powered smoothies to get you started.

I never knew the joys of Aldi until very recently. It wasn't a store I frequented growing up, for some reason or another, but now that I've really seen all the ridiculously affordable foods that the store offers, I'm never turning back. Better yet, this store, which keeps its products' prices low by cutting costs elsewhere (like not using shelves but instead keeping food in its boxes), still offers high-quality food. Case in point, the produce section. You can find amazing produce at the lowest of low prices.

It was the produce section that roped me into shopping for my healthy staples at Aldi, but once I ventured down the other aisles, I realized the store was so much more than just some ripe avocados and cheap cherries. From oatmeal to jars of salsa, Aldi truly carries a little bit of everything, including those diet-friendly foods some of us want to keep stocked in our kitchens at all times. I Took Apple Cider Vinegar Every Day For 1 Week, and These Were the Results

I'm not a superadventurous person by any means. Skydiving will never be on my bucket list and I never use hot sauce on my food - ever! But in the name of my physical and mental health, I'm into trying just about anything. I tried CrossFit for a year (and I'm still at it!), and I also committed to drinking a gallon of water a day for three weeks (spoiler alert: there were LOTS of trips to the bathroom).

One simple thing I've never tried is taking apple cider vinegar (ACV). I've heard about the possible weight-loss benefits and the fact that it's rich in vitamins E, A, and P and minerals such as magnesium, iron, and calcium. It can also improve digestion and boost immunity. But I am not a vinegar person. The smell alone kept me from it - until now.

A yoga friend mentioned that she takes ACV with fresh lemon juice in her water. She assured me that "it just tastes salty, not super vinegary." I decided to give it a try and commit to drinking a glass once a day for a week. It seemed easy enough to incorporate into my day without a huge commitment.

I filled up a 20-ounce mason jar with water - I usually prefer cold water, but warm water was great on a chilly day. I poured in one tablespoon of ACV (I went for raw, unpasteurized, and organic) and squeezed in the juice from one-quarter of a lemon.

The taste? I could still smell the vinegar slightly, so it definitely tasted a tad sharp and tangy, but not as pungent as I was expecting. It was like a slightly salty lemonade. The fresh lemon juice was key - I ran out of lemons one day, and drinking ACV in plain water was pretty tough to swallow.

What Happened?

I do intermittent fasting in the morning, so I drank my ACV lemon-water in the afternoon or after dinner. I found that the flavor grew on me. I thought drinking it every day would be a chore, but I started to look forward to it.

I found that I really enjoyed the ritual of sipping on my special ACV "cocktail." You see, the only beverages I drink are water, herbal tea, and the occasional black coffee, so this felt a little like a treat - but it was actually a treat for my body.

This ACV lemon water satiated my appetite more than plain old water, which helped curb my desire to nosh after dinner. It also satisfied my need for something sweet, so I wasn't craving a bit of chocolate either. I was shocked at how one tablespoon of ACV could have this much of an effect! This must be why people say ACV can help with weight loss - it fills you up so you eat fewer daily calories.

Will I Keep Going?

Yes! I may not drink it every single day, but I'm hooked. Aside from feeling satiated after lunch or dinner, I also enjoyed sipping on something besides water and found that it offered me a sense of ease and calmness. As an added bonus, my digestion was great all week. No bloating or constipation - just a happy tummy.

The 3 Changes Ricki Made to Deal With Grief and Transform Her Mind and Body

Ricki Friedman was hesitant to share her transformation photos. "I didn't want to make this just about a physical transformation," she told POPSUGAR. "Sharing this is scary!" But she decided to tell her story in the hopes that it may help someone else dealing with the loss of a loved one or with body acceptance issues.

Ricki's own journey with her body began when she was just 13 years old and she lost her mother to cancer. She felt deeply depressed, empty, and isolated. "It profoundly affected the way I felt about myself," she recalled. "I was too young to process what had happened to me, so instead of grieving for my mother, I decided to control what I could by controlling my weight."

"I threw myself into the world of 'diet and exercise,' because it was so much easier to say 'I'm fat' and focus on that than it was to say 'I'm in pain and this grief is overwhelming.'"

Ricki said, "I felt so uncomfortable all the time in my skin and always felt 'heavy.'" She said she was obsessed with her weight and lived by the number on the scale. "I felt like if I was skinny and strong, then I would be happy too." She spent hours working out and she said her whole day revolved around when and what she was eating. "I thought that if I felt 'physically' lighter, then I wouldn't be in so much pain from the grief," she told POPSUGAR. "I put all my focus onto what I looked like and it controlled my every thought."

She tried countless diets and workout programs. Why? "So I could try and fix the physical part of me in hopes that it would take care of the emotional one."

Eight years ago, when she was 22 years old, she went to therapy and started talking about her mother's death. That's when her mindset shifted. "The more I talked about it, the more I connected to WHY I had so many unhealthy habits."

In 2012, Ricki built herself a really simple daily system of movement, accountability, and support. "I started changing my relationship with food once I started changing my relationship with grief. I looked at what was 'weighing' me down in my life."

She began by making small changes to her daily habits. "I made a promise to do three things every day."

  • Walk 10,000 steps
  • Track her daily food intake
  • Drink two liters of water

This daily system worked, and she saw her habits change and her life transforming. "The system allowed me to slow down and create real change instead of the quick fix I was always so used to," Ricki said. "I felt lighter physically (and mentally) by being mindful of what I was putting into my body and mind." She added, "I realized that food wasn't the issue, or my weight. It was really the heaviness from the grief I never dealt with and needed to heal."

Ricki: After

The before photo was from 2011, and after one year, she shed 10 pounds. But the number on the scale wasn't important to her. Ricki was excited that she was able to transform her relationship with food. It made all the difference because it's how she took back the power in her life. "I no longer felt controlled by diet, weight, or my body. I was in the driver's seat now," she shared. "I taught myself how to change my mindset and step into a more positive space."

Today Ricki lives a lifestyle that allows her to both indulge and feel good as a whole, and now she's helping others transform their lives. "I know it's never just about the weight when it comes to the heaviness in our lives," she said, and that's the mission behind the program she founded called Break the Weight.

Based on the system that worked for her own life, she's now showing others how to break what may be physically, mentally, and emotionally weighing them down and instead adopt healthy habits. It's truly inspiring that she was able to turn the grief of loss into something positive not only for her own life, but in a way that's affecting the lives of so many others.

This Is Us Finally Revealed Jack's Death, but That Wasn't Even the Big Twist

Randall has a heart-to-heart with her, where she admits to keeping the landline off its cradle because that's the line where the family would get calls to foster another child. Randall gets through to her and shares the kind of future he envisions for her, and Tess realizes that what her parents are doing as foster parents is actually great.

Then comes the big twist: the cutie-pie boy being prepped by a social worker during the episode is actually not the new foster kid coming to live with the family (that's Deja!): the social worker is Tess in the future.

We're tipped off when the young boy meets a couple we've never met - and then older Randall (Sterling K. Brown, you're rocking that aging makeup) shows up to meet Tess for lunch. Clearly, Randall's words that day touched her so much that Tess pursues a career working in foster care.
