The Ridiculously Cheap, Easy Trick That's Kept My Year-Old White Sneakers Looking New
Last Spring, I splurged on a pair of white-on-white Alexander McQueen sneakers. (I'd had my eye on them for months! They were more than half off! I'm good at justifying my shopping habit!) Yet the minute I hit "confirm" on the Zappos Couture order page, I felt a sense of impending dread. Why? I knew I'd wear the hell out of the shoes. Alexander McQueen is one of my favorite designers of all time; I once waited in line for more than three hours on a grimy-hot NYC Summer day to get into the Savage Beauty exhibition at the Met. My dog's name is even Dean McQueen, partly as an ode to Alexander. I was infatuated with the brand's modern riff on classic shell-toe styling, the unique rose-gold accent at the heel, and the platform sole that my best friend's husband would soon compare to "nursing shoes." But I was also worried about keeping them looking pristine - or even marginally clean, for that matter.
The shoes, as currently pictured on the Alexander McQueen website.
I'd seen videos about luxe, white-glove shoe cleaning services that promised to baby your footwear for a hefty fee. But I'd already dropped a major chunk of change on the shoes to begin with. I could try to avoid wearing them while driving, but I live in LA - I'm always driving. Aside from keeping these sneakers wrapped in the box, never to see the light of day, I needed to find a realistic way to keep them looking sparkly. That's when I divulged my new purchase to my sister, Courtney. She had one question: "Have you ever used Mr. Clean Magic Erasers on your shoes?" No. No, I had not. Courtney revealed that they were a weird but surefire way to keep shoes tidy. But would they damage the leather? No. Could I also use them on the soles? Yes. Should I get them wet like I did before using them to descuff the walls in my house? Of course.
I was floored when the marks disappeared - and even more astonished to find that there was no wear or damage to the leather itself.
Somewhat skeptically, I bought a new package of Magic Erasers on my next trip to the drugstore. I'd been wearing the sneaks almost every single day for about a week, and while they were still nearly stark white, I was dismayed by a few little black streaks on the insides of the uppers. There was also a little gray discoloration on one of the heels that, I was certain, was caused by rubbing against the floor mats in my car as I drove. I wet the sponge and cringed while daintily scrubbing the very expensive leather in minuscule circles. I was floored when the marks disappeared - and even more astonished to find that there was no wear or damage to the leather itself. When it worked to almost completely erase the sad, gray coating on the heel, too, you could have knocked me over with . . . a Magic Eraser, I guess.
The author modeling her year-plus-old sneakers.
It's been a year and two months since I first bought these stunners, and this is what they still look like today. Pretty remarkable if you ask me, a woman who is prone to spilling paneer masala on her shoes, scuffing them against all manner of curbs while tripping, and generally making a mess of herself and all of her belongings. Every few weeks, I break out a Magic Eraser, tackle any and all errant smudges and scuffs, and voila: pretty much good as new. I've since tried this trick on mules, pumps, and other pairs of sneakers. So far, I've had across-the-board success using it on genuine leather, though it seems to be a no-go for faux leather and other materials like canvas or mesh.
So, no - I didn't edit these photos at all except to autocorrect the levels. No patching, Facetuning, Photoshopping, or other tricky moves have been deployed to make my beloved McQueens look somehow cleaner than they are. One caveat: Magic Erasers don't work on shoelaces, and, in my experience, neither does the washing machine. So I did purchase a new pair of fresh, thick white laces (for a grand total of $3) about six months ago when the originals got a little dingy. Otherwise, I've probably used the equivalent of two packages of Magic Erasers regularly tidying up my shoes. I'd say spending an average of $6 per year to keep a pair of shoes that are currently selling for $575 in mint condition qualifies as a trick for the ages, wouldn't you?
The Trailer For Chris Pine's Outlaw King Is a Must-Watch For Any Game of Thrones Fan
Chris Pine is leaving the 1980s behind for the 1300s, as he plays real-life Scottish King and rebel hero Robert The Bruce in Outlaw King. The upcoming Netflix historical drama hails from Hell or High Water director David Mackenzie, and tells the true story of the reluctant medieval King who finds himself drawn into a vicious battle with King Edward I (Stephen Dillane) and his vengeful, violent son, the Prince of Wales (Billy Howle). In other words: it's the perfect movie to watch as we patiently wait for Game of Thrones to return. The film also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Florence Pugh, and will arrive on both the streaming network and in select theaters on Nov. 9.
Awkwafina and the Crazy Rich Asians Cast Read Inspiring Fan Tweets About Representation
Crazy Rich Asians has become one of the most talked-about films this Summer, and for good reason. Not only is it a truly perfect, feel-good rom-com that will have you quite literally cheering (over everything from badass Constance Wu to the incredibly fun, over-the-top visuals), but it's also groundbreaking, becoming the first major studio film in 25 years to have an all Asian-American cast in lead roles.
This powerful moment of representation naturally led to people on Twitter sharing just how much this film means to them, so when we had the chance to sit down with Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, and Gemma Chan, they took a look at some of those exact messages. All of which made the cast both slightly emotional . . .
. . . and extremely proud and grateful.
Watch it all go down in the video above, and check out Crazy Rich Asians now in theaters everywhere!
Noticing an Unusual Amount of Hair Loss? How Your Diet May Be to Blame
You better believe it: what you eat can totally affect the growth and feel of your hair. If you're not eating the right nutrients, in the right doses each day, those pretty strands could become brittle and fall out. Yikes! The good news is that as long as you're taking care of your body and hair through nourishment, your hair will likely be shiny, strong, and healthy. Here, dietitians explain the link between diet and hair loss.
What Nutrients You Need
Your hair needs nutrients, just like the rest of your body. Hair strands are mainly composed of protein, which means if you aren't eating enough protein in the day, you could notice thinning hair that might fall out easier, Natalie Rizzo, MS, RD, told POPSUGAR. To get enough protein, look to steak, fish, chicken, dairy products, eggs, legumes, beans, and soy foods.
"Foods rich in iron also contribute to hair health. The hair follicle and root need to be fed by a healthy nutrient- (and iron-) rich blood supply," said Rizzo. If a person becomes deficient in iron, hair may begin to shed. Foods that contain iron include animal products, like red meat, chicken, and fish, as well as lentils and leafy greens.
You also need biotin and healthy fats, like omega-3 fatty acids and adequate monounsaturated fats, in particular, Kelly Jones, MS, RD, CSSD, LDN, told POPSUGAR. These are important for hair to break less and maintain a smooth texture. Meanwhile, biotin is produced in our digestive tracts, so an unhealthy balance of gut bacteria can actually impact its production and therefore hair health. Consider taking a probiotic to get your gut in check.
Selenium can also prevent hair loss, but you only need a little. "Selenium also plays a role in hair and tissue growth, as well as in antioxidant function. Just eating a couple of brazil nuts each day can provide all the selenium you need," says Jones.
Why You Need to Eat Enough, Too
"Hair is a protein that requires not only protein to grow, but also enough calories and nutrients that aid in building protein in the body," said Jones. That's why it's common for people suffering from anorexia to develop bald spots, explained Rizzo.
Restricting calories or carbohydrates means your body will use body protein as an energy source, which isn't an efficient source of energy and compromises tissue growth, including hair, skin, and nails, Jones said. What's more, if you're hitting the gym hard and not eating enough food, you'll speed hair loss, she added. To avoid this, be sure to eat regular meals that are packed with these key nutrients.
I Fell in Love With Someone Twice My Age, and Here's What I Learned
It had barely been a year since I graduated from college when I met him. I was in a messy "in-between" phase; half adult, half wide-eyed kid, awkwardly trying to figure out how to navigate this uncharted era of my life. Many of my friends had recently gotten engaged to their college sweethearts. I, on the other hand, was freshly single after making the poignant discovery that the boy I dated off and on for four years was not the person I wanted to marry. Romantically speaking, I was a total blank slate - completely unsure of what I wanted. For the time being, I decided to put all my energy into my budding career and would try to figure out the game of love later.
Then he came along. Tall, challenging, clever, irritatingly good looking . . . and twice my age. I knew of him. I lived in a relatively small city at the time, and he and I had a mutual friend and were regulars at the same uptown watering hole. I found him attractive, but I knew his history (divorced, two kids) and had zero intentions of even pursuing a friendship, much less a torrid relationship. But after our first real conversation, I knew I was in deep, deep trouble.
The fall was fierce and fast. My mom didn't approve and my friends – while mostly supportive – were perplexed. But I couldn't help it; I was captivated by him. He had fascinating stories and looked at the world from an angle entirely new to me. He was more than two decades my senior, but I never even thought about it. His spirit was young. We watched the sunrise, talking. We stayed out all night dancing. We cried until we laughed and laughed until our sides hurt. At the time, I had never had a person make me feel more beautiful.
I went in addled and green but left with a brand-new sense of who I was and what I needed from love.
The next year and a half would be emotional; I would be smacked with the highest highs and the lowest lows I had ever encountered. Choosing to walk away was unequivocally the hardest decision I had ever made in my young adult life. It broke me. But when the tears dried, I realized the lessons I learned throughout this emotive journey were invaluable. I went in addled and green but left with a brand-new sense of who I was and what I needed from love. To him: I thank you. This is what you taught me.
I need to be in an equal partnership.
I admired his success. He owned his own company and was the boss in so many aspects of his life. What I didn't realize at first was this "boss" mentality would translate over to his relationships as well. When we disagreed, he would listen to my side but ultimately say he knew better as he had more life experience. While it taught me a lesson in humility, I also learned I wasn't designed to be submissive. He told me there was always one person in charge in every relationship. Today, I disagree – I believe in compromise. My partner's views and opinions matter, but so do mine.
I don't need someone to open my doors.
In the beginning, it seemed so romantic that he always opened my car door. After all, growing up, I thought this was something men were supposed to do if they really cared about you. But honestly, I realized that I am perfectly capable and happy to open my own door. It's a nice gesture – don't get me wrong – but it's so much more important to treat me like an equal partner than to open my damn door.
I want to experience the different seasons of life with someone.
There were times I daydreamed about building a life with him. I thought about buying and decorating a house, getting married, having kids, and maybe adopting a lazy house cat. But the truth was, he had already done all those things with someone else (cat included). And while I knew that didn't mean he couldn't do at least some of them again with me, I wanted someone I could share these monumental life experiences with for the first time. Maybe that was selfish of me, but it was the truth.
I want to be someone's priority.
I respected the great father that he was (and I know still is). His kids always came first (as they should), but to such an extreme that he wouldn't bring me around them or answer my phone calls when they were present. In the beginning, I was understanding without question – who was I to say anything when I had no idea what it was like to be a parent? But even as we got closer, and our relationship became serious, nothing changed. I didn't want to be someone's part-time; I wanted to be someone's priority.
I still had so much I wanted to do.
I loved his stories; he was a world traveler and had so many incredible life experiences under his belt. It was such a refreshing change from exes of mine that had never even been on an airplane. But it also lit a fire in me; I too wanted to stomp across Europe and camp in South America. I wanted to move to a big city and live on nothing but cold sandwiches and crazy dreams. I wanted to make more mistakes and take more chances before settling down. I realized that I just wasn't ready, and that was OK.
Seven years later, I'm engaged to a man who's still figuring it all out (as am I). He forgets to open my car door sometimes, and we split our bills 50/50. There are times he concedes and other times when he firmly stands his ground. He's passionate, hard-working, and has big dreams, but he has never made me feel second fiddle to anything in his life. He's what and who I now know that I want.
12 Things I Really Wish I Knew Before Running My First Marathon
A little over a year ago, I ran my first ever marathon. Prior to that, I had completed four half marathons, and I felt like I had become too comfortable with that distance. Sure, 13.1 miles is still a challenge - I'm not crazy - but it wasn't a new challenge. I wanted more.
I remember being 16 years old and watching my mom train for her first marathon. She had just turned 40 and wanted to accomplish something huge (in addition to all the other amazing things she had already done). She would be gone for hours every Saturday morning, come home exhausted but victorious, and groan her way into an ice bath. I admired her hard work, and simultaneously thought she was completely nuts. When I saw her cross the finish line that Fall, limping and teary and so incredibly proud, I knew I had to feel that feeling.
Fast-forward more than a few years, I found myself signing up for my first marathon (with my mom and brother, of course). We ran our weekday runs alone and met up just about every weekend for our long runs. The training was grueling, and more often than not, I'd find myself hobbling around for a day or two after my long run. There's definitely a certain level of crazy required to run 26.2 miles for fun.
After five months of training, the day was here. The weather was perfect, my playlist was set, and we had awesome custom tank tops. We ran and completed the California International Marathon. I didn't score an impressive time, but I finished, but not without some surprises. Here's what I learned along the way and wish I would have known before.

Venom Isn't Even Out Yet and There's Already Talk of a Sequel AND Spinoffs
Venom is still a few months away from hitting theaters, but there's already talk of all the potential sequels and spinoffs it might spawn. According to Variety, if the film ends up being as good as the trailer makes it seem, and it delivers at the box office, then Sony will move fast to introduce a number of heroes and villains from the Spider-Man universe in the form of sequels to the Tom Hardy outing, as well as standalone films. At the moment, Sony's licensing pact with Marvel affords them the rights to around 900 characters, so the possibilities are pretty much endless.
At the moment, Sony is already moving forward with plans to make Morbius, a vampire and frequent foe for Spider-Man, with Safe House director Daniel Espinosa at the helm and Jared Leto starring. On top of that, The Equalizer 2's Richard Wenk is writing a screenplay centering on the story of Kraven the Hunter, and the studio is making moves to develop scripts based on the characters of Silk (a Korean-American superheroine), Jackpot (an older, female masked vigilante), and Nightwatch (a doctor-turned-hero with powers of invisibility). There was also a Silver & Black film in the works, which would follow Silver Sable and Black Cat, but Sony has nixed that in favor of breaking each character out into a standalone film, starting with Black Cat aka burglar Felicia Hardy.
Sanford Panitch, who is the president of Columbia Pictures and oversees Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters, recently explained a bit of their thought process. "We're focused on being faithful to the comics," he said. "We believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film."
It might seem like Sony is putting the cart before the horse if everything hinges around Venom's success, similar to what happened to all of Disney's standalone Star Wars films that were scrapped after the box office disappointment of Solo. Fortunately, between Venom's star-studded cast (Tom Hardy! Michelle Williams! Riz Ahmed!) and its capable director (Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer), the odds are stacked in favor of the antihero's success both critically and financially.
Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek Are the Cute Duo We Never Knew We Needed
On Sunday night, the ever-so-sexy Charlie Hunnam and genetically blessed Rami Malek stepped out in LA for the premiere of their new film, Papillon. For the special occasion, the two actors looked incredibly dapper in sharp suits, but it was their big smiles that really caught our attention.
As they posed for photographers on the red carpet, Charlie and Rami showed off their adorable friendship, making us wish that we too could have been there. Read on to see more photos of the two stars, and don't forget to go see Papillon once it hits theaters on Aug. 24.

Is Your Mouth Tingly After Eating an Apple? Do Your Ears Itch After Biting a Banana? Here's Why
Ever bite into a fresh peach or piece of melon and your mouth feels itchy, or your lips swell? It's not just in your head - it's called oral allergy syndrome (OAS). Also known as pollen-food allergy syndrome, it happens when you eat certain raw fruits, veggies, or nuts that contain cross-reacting allergens. If you suffer from seasonal allergies to birch, ragweed, grass, or mugwort pollen, your risk for OAS is increased. That's because your immune system can't tell the difference between pollen and the protein in certain trigger foods.
Aside from itching, tingling, or swelling around the lips, mouth, tongue, throat, or ears, other OAS symptoms include sneezing, nasal congestion, hives, dizziness, or diarrhea. Often symptoms are mild and show up immediately after eating the food, but reactions can take up to an hour. In some rare cases, shortness of breath or tightness in the throat can indicate a risk for anaphylaxis, similar to a peanut allergy. If you experience these life-threatening symptoms, call 911.
Here's a list of foods to watch out for. Note that OAS reactions can be worse if you consume these foods at the height of pollen season. You can avoid symptoms by simply avoiding your trigger foods, but you could also try peeling, cooking, or eating frozen versions.
It's also important to know that even if you do suffer from seasonal allergies to birch, ragweed, grass, or mugwort pollen, you could be totally fine eating these foods. If you've never had an issue, there's no need to avoid them. It is possible to develop OAS symptoms to foods that previously didn't cause issues, so just be aware if you notice any issues.
Took a Long Break From Working Out? Here's Jillian Michaels's Advice For Getting Back in Shape

The Inclusion of Coldplay's "Yellow" in Crazy Rich Asians Is More Significant Than You Realize
If you've seen Crazy Rich Asians, then chances are you've fallen just as hard in love with the film's soundtrack as Nick falls for Rachel. From a truly stunning cover of "Can't Help Falling in Love" to an upbeat love song from Miguel, the music featured deserves to be at the top of all your playlists. That's why you might be surprised to discover that the song in the rom-com's final, beautiful moments almost didn't make the cut.
At the end of the film, emotions are running high as Rachel (Constance Wu) considers her departure from Singapore, as her estranged boyfriend, Nick (Henry Golding), struggles with his relationship with his demanding mother, Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh). There's also the matter of Astrid (Gemma Chan) and her own romantic woes (which luckily get a lift in the adorable midcredits scene). Director John M. Chu had the perfect song in mind to capture all of these themes from the very beginning: Coldplay's "Yellow." The only problem? Neither Warner Bros. or Coldplay wanted the song in the film.
Since the word "yellow" has racist connotations for Asian and Asian-American people, the studio was reluctant to include the song in Crazy Rich Asians, no matter how thematically perfect. Coldplay apparently had similar reservations, especially since the band has dealt with cultural appropriation accusations in the past. But Chu knew he had to have Coldplay's 2000 hit play over his big finale, for exactly that reason. "We're going to own that term," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "If we're going to be called yellow, we're going to make it beautiful . . . We tried so many other songs, but everything was about the love story and not about the bigger context of who we are."
Warner Bros. eventually saw how important the song was to Chu's vision for the film - "I told them, 'Well, a white director couldn't do it'" - but it wasn't until the director sent a personal letter to Coldplay bandmates Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, and Will Champion that "Yellow" was finally allowed into the movie. Chu shared the letter with THR, an excerpt of which you can read below:
"I know it's a bit strange, but my whole life I've had a complicated relationship with the color yellow . . . That is, until I heard your song. For the first time in my life, it described the color in the most beautiful magical ways I had ever heard . . . I remember seeing the music video in college for the first time on [MTV's] TRL. That oner shot with the sun rising was breathtaking for both my filmmaker and music-loving side. It immediately became an anthem for me and my friends and gave us a new sense of pride we never felt before . . . It would be such an honor to use your song that gave me so much strength throughout the years, to underscore this final part of our film. And for me personally, it would complete a journey that I've been going through, fighting to make it in the movie business."
Within 24 hours of sending his letter, the band approved his musical request and he set about commissioning a Chinese-language cover. The tune ended up landing in the hands (er, vocal cords) of Katherine Ho, a freshman at USC who competed on season 10 of The Voice. She sang the Mandarin version, called "Liu Xing," popularized by Beijing singer Li Wenqi, resulting in a memorable, romantic final scene for the film that's far more significant than most audiences might have initially realized.
As long as your tear ducts are ready to do some work, listen to the gorgeous cover in question ahead.

Fortunately, the cast of the Wonder Woman sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, took it upon themselves to provide us all with some such joy when they recently took a break from filming '80s-era action scenes to re-create the classic movie poster for The Breakfast Club. Chris Pine doesn't appear to be wearing a jumpsuit, but it's still pretty incredible.
Chris Sylvia, an employee of Regal Cinemas, posted the truly wonderful photo of stars Pine, Gal Gadot, director Patty Jenkins (who's posed as Judd Nelson, iconic), villain Kristin Wiig, and a nearly unrecognizable Pedro Pascal. Reddit user u/HenroTee even took it a step further by working some Photoshop magic and turning the image into a legit re-creation of the OG poster, which we have to imagine even Molly Ringwald would be impressed with (even if, technically, the John Hughes comedy didn't come out until 1985).

Details about the plot of the upcoming superhero film, due out in November 2019, have been mostly kept under wraps, but it's known that the sequel will see Diana facing off against the Soviet Union during "the closing days of the Cold War" in the 1980s, and also make her way to America. Jenkins told Variety in 2017 that it will bring Wonder Woman to a deeper, perhaps slightly darker place, and include another great "love story." Sadly there's still no word on whether or not it will end with Diana walking across a football field with her fist held triumphantly above her head.
According to Winona Ryder, She and Keanu Reeves Accidentally Got Married on the Dracula Set
Dracula - he'll suck your blood, turn you into a creature of the night, and . . . accidentally cause you and your costar to get married on the set of your latest film? At least, that's what may or may not have happened to Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves. While sitting down with Entertainment Weekly to promote their latest collaboration, the rom-com Destination Wedding, the pair began to reflect on a previous film they'd done together, 1992's Bram Stoker's Dracula.
In the horror-drama, Ryder plays Mina Murray to Reeves's Jonathan Harker, while Gary Oldman was tasked with playing a version of the iconic vampire (with pretty questionable hair, I should note). And, apparently, there was also a real-life Romanian priest on set for a wedding scene, meaning the vows Ryder and Reeves say as Mina and Jonathan could, technically, have bonded them for real.
"We actually got married in Dracula. No, I swear to god I think we're married in real life," Ryder explained. "In that scene, [director] Francis [Ford Coppola] used a real Romanian priest . . . We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So I think we're married."
After Ryder revealed that fun behind-the-scenes tidbit, Reeves plays along at first, telling her, "It's lovely to see you again," as if they've been a long-separated couple. But then the Stranger Things actress reminded him that they went through the entire traditional ceremony, including "I dos."
"We said yes?" Reeves asked.
"Don't you remember that?" Ryder responded. "It was on Valentine's Day."
According to EW, Reeves then uttered a shocked "Oh my gosh, we're married," concluding what is perhaps the greatest interview of all time.

Unsure If Plastic Baby Bottles Are Safe? Go Glass Instead With These 7 Options
There's an interesting conversation happening right now surrounding plastic baby bottles. A recent report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) highlighted dangers associated with reheating certain types of plastic in microwaves and dishwashers. For bottle-fed babies, this data might be unsettling, as many parents frequently use the dishwasher to sanitize bottles and sippy cups.
Since heat could potentially leak BPA and phthalates into the bottles (they're not suggesting that it's definitely happening), you can avoid this potential hazard entirely by opting to use glass bottles instead. Find out what's on the market and see what's right for your baby.
Now's the Perfect Time to Take the Whole Family to Applebee's For Dinner - Here's Why
Sure, we love treating our kids to a nice meal out to celebrate a solid report card or scoring a hat trick in their soccer game, but eating out all the time can get pricey. Thankfully, there's a Kids Eat Free Night at Applebee's, which makes your big night out a heck of a lot easier on the wallet.
Here's the lowdown: select Applebee's locations across the US let children under the age of 12 get to eat free off the kids' menu one night per week when an adult orders a full-price entrée. As far as meal options for your little ones go, count on the usual suspects: hamburgers, quesadillas, mac and cheese, and chicken grillers (a healthier take on tenders).
If that deal wasn't sweet enough for parents, Applebee's is also offering $1 strawberry margaritas during the month of August only. And that means parents can get their drink on at a serious discount while their kids get free meals. Just don't forget to arrange for a designated driver if you plan on enjoying several margs!
One final PSA: the night of the deal varies on each Applebee's location, so make sure you call ahead to confirm before packing the kids in the car.

Netflix Is Going to Start Interrupting Your TV Marathons With Ads For Their Other Series
One of the best things about Netflix - if not the best thing, period - is that it's the one streaming service that doesn't force you to endure repetitive commercial breaks, even at its cheapest subscription tier. Unfortunately, the company is toying with the idea of introducing commercial-like videos advertising other Netflix originals while you're watching series like Orange Is the New Black, 13 Reasons Why, Ozark, and more. On the bright side, these ads will only play while the credits are rolling at the end of each episode.
Netflix confirmed that they're going to start testing the new ad experience for users in a statement to Ars Technica on Aug. 17. "We are testing whether surfacing recommendations between episodes helps members discover stories they will enjoy faster," Netflix said. "A couple of years ago, we introduced video previews to the TV experience, because we saw that it significantly cut the time members spend browsing and helped them find something they would enjoy watching even faster."
If you're wondering what to expect exactly from this update, an American Netflix user explained their personal (and confused) experience when encountering the update on Reddit. "After the episode ended, I got a screen saying 'More Shameless up next . . .,' then the title card slid off screen, and it continued with, 'but first check out Insatiable' [a Netflix-exclusive series] and started playing the trailer."
More people replied to the thread saying they've also noticed the update and bemoaned the fact that it's not optional. Users called it "dumb" and "a hassle," but there did seem to be a discrepancy between those who'd been given a "skip" button, and those who supposedly had to watch "the same Orange Is the New Black trailer all damn morning."
Netflix did tell Ars Technica, however, that the update is entirely skippable. They also noted that they've been mindful of the overwhelmingly negative "chatter on social channels," but they're staying focused on "how users interact with these new video ads."
Yep, Jack Brooksbank Is Older Than Princess Eugenie, but Only by a Few Years
Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank first met during a ski trip in Switzerland back in 2010 and have been going strong ever since. Because they've been together for so long, it's easy to forget how old they are. Eugenie was born on March 23, 1990, making her 28 years old. Jack, on the other hand, was born on May 3, 1987, making him 31 and three years older than Eugenie.
Eugenie and Jack are set to tie the knot on Oct. 12 at Windsor's St. George's Chapel (yep, the same place where Prince Harry and Meghan got married). Eugenie has already chosen her sister, Princess Beatrice, as her maid of honor; however, Jack has yet to reveal who he's selected as his best man. It's also been reported that Princess Charlotte and Prince George may have special roles in the royal affair, and if it's anything like Pippa Middleton's and Harry's weddings, we're in for a real treat.

Get Ready to Feel Inspired: Rudy Is Coming Back to Theaters For Its 25th Anniversary!
College football season is right around the corner, and a classic feel-good sports movie is the perfect way to celebrate your favorite pastime. It's been 25 years since Rudy introduced us to real-life underdog Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, and to celebrate the anniversary, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Fathom Events are bringing the film back to theaters! Fighting Irish fans will be able to watch the movie from more than 600 select movie theaters across all 50 states.
Originally released in 1993, Rudy stars Sean Astin as Ruettiger, a too-small fan who dreams of playing with the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team. Written and directed by Hoosiers legend Angelo Pizzo and David Anspaugh, the story follows Ruettiger's journey from being a tackling dummy to making Notre Dame history. His triumphant play in the only game he ever joined ended with him sacking the Georgia Tech quarterback in the final seconds. If you still had a dry eye watching Ruettiger get carried off the field on his teammates' shoulders, you weren't watching it right.
The sports biopic will only be out for two days, Aug. 28 and Sept. 2, and fans are able to pick from two showings each day. The screenings will include a Q&A featuring the real-life Ruettiger, previously filmed in front of a live audience at Chicago's Music Box Theatre. You can check out the Fathom Events website to see the complete list of participating theater locations, and grab your ticket to get inspired!
This Is Why You Recognize Peter in To All the Boys I've Loved Before
Netflix's teen rom-com To All The Boys I've Loved Before is definitely one of the hottest streaming titles of the year. Its charming leading man, Florida-born actor Noah Centineo, won our hearts as Peter, a sweet, popular lacrosse player who agrees to help protagonist Lara Jean in her romantic high jinks. Have you been rewatching the trailer, trying to figure out where you've seen Centineo before? Turns out he's been a staple on your screens for longer than you think.
Like so many of your favorites, Centineo got his start with the Mouse. He began with small roles on established Disney sitcoms such as Austin and Ally, Shake It Up, and Jessie. Although these roles lasted only one to three episodes each, they were definitely enough to get Centineo on the radar. He got upgraded to leading man status as the love interest Jaden in the network's 2014 original comedy movie How to Build a Better Boy.
TV fans will definitely recognize Centineo from his next and most famous role: Jesus Adams Foster on the Freeform drama series The Fosters (above, in 2016). Centineo did not originate the role: for the first two seasons of the show, the role of Jesus was played by Jake T. Austin. When Austin left the show in 2015, Centineo stepped in, and continued to portray the character for the remaining three seasons. Fans of the recent rom-com SPF-18 might remember Centineo as the crushable fan favorite Johnny. He's not just a comedy guy, though - he plays tutor Hawk on the cyber-thriller series T@gged.
If you still can't get enough of Centineo, then you're in luck! He's slated to appear in several films over the next year or so. Aside from To All the Boys I've Loved Before, he's also been cast in the upcoming teen-comedy retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac, Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, and as the romantic lead in the dating-app comedy The Stand-In. Sounds like he'll be stealing hearts for a while to come!
Here's Who's Expected to Be in Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank's Wedding Party
Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank are getting married on Oct. 12, and details regarding their royal wedding party have slowly begun unfolding. Eugenie recently announced her choice for maid of honor in the September 2018 issue of British Vogue, and of course, it came as no surprise. It's also reported that Prince George and Princess Charlotte will have special roles during the ceremony; however, Jack's best man still has yet to be revealed. Here's what we know so far.
Back to Basics: This Fundamental Workout Will Help You Strengthen at Any Level
Introducing strength training into your workouts can definitely seem like an intimidating move, but there are plenty of ways to ease into this new part of your fitness journey. For one, you don't have to jump straight into barbell work. Strength training encompasses bodyweight exercises that can also be enhanced with dumbbells. To help you narrow down your routine to the best beginner moves, Corey Phelps, nutrition expert, NASM personal trainer, certified BASI Pilates teacher, TRX and Spinning instructor, and creator of the fitness app Cultivate365, shared a strengthening workout that can help any level master fundamental movements.
Corey's biggest recommendation: "Keep it simple, start small, and build from there," she told POPSUGAR. "If you do too much in the beginning, you may end up overly sore, which can be discouraging and ultimately hinder you from keeping a consistent schedule."
Her workout below targets major muscle groups and serves as a helpful way to measure your progress. Once you're able to complete 15 reps with ease, it's time to move onto heavier weights.
The workout:
- Squats
- Walking lunges
- Shoulder presses
- Bicep curls
- Overhead triceps extensions
- Reverse abdominal crunches
Complete 10 to 12 reps for each move for a total of four sets. Not challenging enough? Increase your reps to 12 to 15 for a total of five sets.
See the moves ahead!
A Trainer Says Doing This Style of Cardio Will Sculpt and Tone Your Booty
Did you know the gluteal muscles are among the most underused and undertrained muscles in the body? Crazy, right? One of the common causes of dormant butt syndrome, as some like to call it, is sitting. Yes, sitting. When you sit for extended periods of time (you may want to stand up now and continue reading this), your hip flexors tighten and your glute muscles turn off.
The good news is you can begin correcting and activating your booty muscles today (and start getting those gains). It's 100 percent OK to train your butt every day, just be sure to mix up the stimulus in order to prevent over-training and injury. If you're new to strength training, you'll want to begin with no more than three strength sessions a week, in order to allow your body to adapt to the new stimulus. Once you become comfortable with the movements and aren't extremely sore, you can begin to advance your programs.
Personal trainer Ryan Read has transformed a butt or two and told POPSUGAR that he likes to add walking on a treadmill at an incline into his programs to help with booty gains. "I base my whole program on building and burning," he said. "I have my girls lift heavy weights to build muscle and do incline and resistance cardio to burn calories and tone." Ryan said that the combination of lifting heavy weights and doing resisted cardio are "key to getting the lean, full look girls want."
How exactly does walking on an incline help? Glad you asked. Ryan said that it allows the glutes to stay involved while keeping the heart rate elevated and burning calories. "It's highly intense, fast-paced, and makes for a great workout to keep the muscles guessing, which is key to growth."
Start sculpting your booty today with Ryan's butt-transforming workout. And as a bonus, begin implementing these exercises into your strength sessions to really see a change in your assets.
This Is Exactly How Often You Should Strength-Train to Build Muscle, According to Jillian Michaels
If you're looking to put on muscle, you probably think you need to hit the weight room every day for hours at a time to see results. Most people have the misconception that they should do strictly cardio for fat loss, and only lift weights a ton to gain muscle. In reality, there's an easier, much more achievable approach to putting on muscle and getting the results you want.
To start to see muscle gain, fitness expert and trainer Jillian Michaels, who created the My Fitness by Jillian Michaels app, told POPSUGAR you need to lift four times per week. "Train each muscle group twice a week with two days of rest between training that particular muscle group," she said. So you could do upper body on Mondays and Thursdays, and lower body on Tuesdays and Fridays. If you are also looking to shed fat, she recommends throwing in a couple days of cardio or HIIT.
Turns out, seeing muscle gains versus losing weight isn't so much about how you work out as it is about what you eat, Jillian explained.
"The difference between weight loss and muscle is really about food," she said. "If you want to lose weight, you have to create a calorie deficit. If you want to gain muscle, you need to have a calorie surplus. Eat 10 percent more calories than you burn in a day."
It's also key to load up on protein if you are trying to gain muscle: ideally 0.5 to 0.8 grams of protein per pound of body weight, according to registered dietitian and personal trainer Jim White, ACSM. So if someone weighs 150 pounds, he or she should be eating 75-120 grams of protein daily to gain muscle.
So if you are really looking to see those muscle gains, don't stress out about hitting the gym every day. In fact, some rest days are good for you. Just make sure when you hit the weight room, you're ready to put in the work.
Got a Desk Job? You Need to Do These 3 Resistance-Band Moves Before Your Workout
Whether you're aware of it or not, you probably have "dead-butt syndrome," a symptom most common in those who sit at a desk all day, have just sat through a long flight, or sleep in fetal position. Sound familiar? Many of us are constantly going from one place to the next, including the office to the gym or fresh off the plane to a hotel or meeting. In an effort to help you maintain your health and wellness routine while you're on the road, Westin Hotels partnered up with Goop to bring you a fitness experience called G. Sport Sessions. POPSUGAR recently had the opportunity to join the Chicago stop, where we sweat it out with Tracy Anderson and learned a lesson about this so called "syndrome."
According to Westin's Global Run Concierge Chris Heuisler, such lifestyle factors minimize glute activity, resulting in tight hips and perhaps even related knee pain or lower-back issues.
"You're basically turning off your glutes 75 percent of the day," Chris told POPSUGAR. "Then you get out of your desk and go right to your SoulCycle class or go right to your run without warming up at all. What you're doing is running with a dead butt; you're now running with your largest muscle group asleep, putting more pressure on your knees and lower back."
An effective way to wake up the glutes is to utilize a resistance band, aka the cheapest and most underrated piece of fitness equipment. Not only are you properly warming up your lower body, but you're also naturally getting a mini leg-and-butt workout in the process.
See three warmup band exercises from Chris that will fire up your glutes and open up your hips.
This Equinox Trainer's Fat-Burning, Bodyweight HIIT Workout Only Takes 10 Minutes
Despite what you may have heard, you don't need to spend hours and hours at the gym to tone up, shed fat, and feel amazing. Martel Martellus, NASM-certified trainer at Equinox, recommends doing HIIT (high-intensity interval training) sessions when you're short on time and want to get in a good workout.
"HIIT workouts can help you burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time," Martel told POPSUGAR. "They also keep your metabolic rate high after your workout so you burn extra calories, even after." That means you'll burn more calories throughout the day, long after you've wrapped up your sweat session.
Not only does HIIT equal more calorie burn, but "it adds as a post-exercise appetite suppressant," Martel said. "It allows for higher levels of fat oxidation in the muscles, which basically means that your lipid molecules (fat cells) are broken down into smaller sizes and used for energy rather than excess storage, which contributes to weight loss." Sounds good to us. Where do we sign up?
I did a HIIT workout with Martel last week, and it was a tough one. We did seven different exercises for 20 seconds and rested for 10 seconds before moving onto the next one. You go through all the exercises once, rest for 60 seconds, and repeat two more times for a total of three rounds. That only equals 10.5 minutes of work. You can do anything for 10 minutes! And the best part is, you don't need any equipment for this session.
Here are the exercises, and descriptions for each one are below.
- Split lunge jump + squat
- Plyometric push-ups
- Mountain climbers + burpee tuck jump
- Shuffle + curtsy lunge
- Reverse burpee
- Lateral hops
- Split lunge jumps

If Lower-Belly Fat Is Your Trouble Spot, Then Try This Ab-Focused Workout
Lower-belly fat is a common problem area for people looking to flatten their bellies and tighten their core. Although you can't specifically spot target fat loss - as you lose weight, you can't control which fat cells shrink from which body parts - you can target specific muscles with certain exercises.
To lose weight overall, it's important to eat a healthy diet in a calorie deficit, incorporate cardio and HIIT exercise, and strength train your whole body. But if you're looking to strengthen your lower ab muscles specifically, these 18 exercises are a great place to start. Best part? Most of them are equipment-free so you can do them right at home.
After Doing Whole30, I Can Tell You Exactly What Food Triggers My Anxiety
I've been taking a low dose of anxiety medication since finals week of my senior year of college. For a long time, it was exactly what I needed to keep my symptoms at bay. Unfortunately, though, as I made my way into my 30s with a full-time consulting job, a side hustle, and a new marriage, I found myself settling into my old anxious ways even with the medication. That's probably why I found myself consuming a few too many sugary treats to ease the stress of my busy days. (Hey! There's nothing a pack of Sour Patch Kids can't cure, amiright?)
When I finally decided to kick my habit of overindulgence to the curb, Whole30 seemed like the best approach. If you haven't heard of Whole30, it's an elimination diet that requires you to remove processed foods, dairy, alcohol, legumes, and grains from your life for 30 days. In short, I would be eating a lot of meat and vegetables for the next month!
I'd heard so many inspiring stories from people who had successfully completed the challenge and gone on to have healthier, more fulfilled lives. So, I cleaned out my cupboards, bought a ridiculous number of avocados, and gave my husband a fair warning. I was about to begin Whole30.
Throughout the challenge I experienced most of the same struggles and benefits that most people experience throughout the 30-day program. I was tired in the beginning, but then super energized for the last 10 days of the program. I slept better, my stomach was flatter, and my skin was clearer. I didn't have a lot of cravings, but my husband will tell you that a glass of Rosé was all I wanted for the whole 30 days.
But the most surprising part of Whole30 happened at the end. I noticed that I wasn't feeling my usual anxious feelings throughout the day. In fact, sometime around day 25, I realized I couldn't remember the last time I even felt anxious! Even more surprising was that my anxiety was gone even though I didn't have my usual comfort foods on hand.
After reintroducing each eliminated food group one by one, it became really obvious that sugar was the culprit of my heightened anxiety. Sometimes the negative effects of my beloved Sour Patch Kids lasted well into the next day. And that glass of Rosé I'd been craving? Even the sugar in that left me feeling uncomfortable.
Have I completely eliminated sugar from my diet? I have to admit the answer is no, but the awareness of how sugar impacts my anxiety has been extremely eye opening. Now, instead of checking the calorie count on the foods I eat, I look first at the amount of sugar. This has helped me avoid foods that I once thought were healthy, but were probably making me feel bad. I'll probably never cut sugar completely out of my life, but now I know that when I'm feeling extra anxious, I should avoid sugary snacks.
