Anna Kendrick's Epic Rap on The Ellen Show Will Take You Back to Her Pitch Perfect Days
If there's one thing we've always admired about Anna Kendrick, it's her "respect for the streets." It's been a while since the A Simple Favor star showed off her musical skills, but during her Thursday appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show she did just that. During the show, Kendrick requested a "simple favor" from DeGeneres - to send out specific tweets from her Twitter account, including one that said, "A Simple Favor is so amazing, it'll get you laid." In return, the comedian asked the actress to perform M.O.P's "Ante Up," which she rapped along to in a film.
"It's so embarrassing," Kendrick responded, laughing. "I was really feeling the rap. I say that you have to have respect for the streets, which is how I try to live my life." Thankfully she agreed and graced us all with a performance done completely from memory. It really takes us back to those glorious Pitch Perfect riff-off days. Watch Kendrick show off her impressive rap skills above!

Here's Why You Won't See Photos of Prince George's First Day of School This Year
Today is Prince George's first day of school, and unlike when he arrived last September for kindergarten with his dad while Kate Middleton was battling severe morning sickness, it's likely both his parents will be escorting him this time. But if you were hoping to peep some adorable photos of the 5-year-old heir in his dapper uniform and perhaps an oversize backpack, you're in for some disappointment.
Although his first-ever day of school at Thomas's Academy in Battersea last year was captured by photographers, Kensington Palace will not likely release any official portraits of Prince George heading off to first grade.
In fact, the media were not invited to record his arrival this September.
Apparently, it's royal tradition that children are pictured on their very first day of school, but aren't photographed in subsequent years to protect the family's privacy - which would explain why there are only a handful of photos of Prince George heading to Westacre Montessori nursery school in 2016, and why images of both Prince William and Prince Harry from their school tenure are rarities.
Still, if you want to appreciate all the cuteness that is the little prince heading off to school, here's a quick look back at his two previous first-day photo ops.
I'm a Mom, but I'm Not Maternal
According to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, the definition of maternal is "of, relating to, belonging to, or characteristic of a mother." In other words, it's those natural and warm instincts that are traditionally associated with being a mom. Acting maternal should come easy to all women, right? So, to be a mother is to be maternal. Well, actually, no. Not all mothers feel maternal, even after having more than one baby. To some women, motherhood comes with a severe learning curve - one that takes a lot of time and practice. How do I know? I'm one of them.
I didn't like being needed that much. How unmaternal is that? I thought I was supposed to love being attached to my baby all the time.
I always knew I wanted to be a mom. I enjoyed coaching the little kids at soccer camp and was also a teacher for a period of time. I adored helping children learn, and their joy made my heart swell. Plus, I had heard numerous stories from my own mother and my friends about how euphoric motherhood is for them. They made it sound like it was as blissful as falling in love for the first time, which, I guess it sort of is. So, I assumed it would be that way for me, too. Only it wasn't.
When I was pregnant, I felt excited like many first-time moms. I registered for all the necessities, got the nursery set up perfectly, and did my research about child-rearing. But when I brought my baby boy home from the hospital and stepped into my house for the first time as a mother, I felt everything but maternal. Nothing about being a mother felt natural to me. The lack of sleep, the horror that was breastfeeding, and the constantly being needed - yeah, I was lost. I felt like I needed a GPS to help me navigate my way through the fog of early motherhood.
Not only did I not know what I was doing, but the pressure of loving motherhood at all hours of the day was too immense for me to handle. I'm a confident enough mother to admit this now, but at the time, I didn't like being needed that much. How unmaternal is that? I thought I was supposed to love being attached to my baby all the time. I felt so inadequate and ashamed that motherhood was not this innate, blissful experience for me like I had heard it was from so many other mothers. I felt like a fraud. But I kept trying. I cuddled and loved him through my constant flow of tears.
Eventually, I started to feel like I was getting the hang of it. I was still unsteady, but I truly began enjoying my firstborn instead of beating myself up over things not coming naturally to me. And while I know I'm not maternal, I also know that I'm still a pretty damn good mother. I love both of my children despite my intense learning curve. So if "maternal" isn't in your DNA, it's OK. Trust me. Mothering will get easier and your children will love you no matter what. Don't let the word get in your way of being the best mother you can be.
The Surprising Inspiration Behind Henry Golding's Character in A Simple Favor
The past few years have been a whirlwind for Henry Golding, and luckily for all of us, he doesn't plan on slowing down anytime soon.
The 31-year-old British–Malaysian actor first got his start on screen as a travel host on BBC's The Travel Show in 2014, and has quickly transformed himself into one of Hollywood's hottest up-and-coming actors. After stealing our hearts with his role as Nick Young in Jon M. Chu's blockbuster rom-com Crazy Rich Asians this Summer, Golding is stepping into a much darker role in the upcoming thriller A Simple Favor, alongside Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick.
"It's such a different take of characters that I've played," Golding told POPSUGAR about his role in the film. "Sean is this much darker, mysterious, unsuspecting character. You don't know where he sits." Even though Sean is a far cry from the romantic Nick Young, Golding still finds a way to make the character charming with his natural charisma. In fact, director Paul Feig actually advised Golding to model his character after Cary Grant's character in Suspicion, Johnnie Aysgarth. "That's the frame of mind going into this character that I needed to have," Golding explained. "And I think it definitely works. It takes you on this unsuspecting sort of journey with Sean, and the audience really don't know who he is."
While Sean is dark and mysterious in his own right, Lively and Kendrick's characters are just as twisted. "It was amazing," Golding said about working with the pair. "If you could dream up two female leads in this universe, they're very close to the top of the list." Though the three characters have a complicated relationship in the film, Golding admitted it was a thrill filming those intense scenes. "Especially scenes where the proximity is so close - there's no one else in the room, apart from us three. There are no extras. It's in a home, in a room with myself, Anna, and Blake for the entire day. It's just a joy. And it's such a different way of acting; it's laser-focused."
In his short career, Golding has already starred alongside some talented actors, but he really looks up to the directors he's worked with. "[Some of my biggest inspirations are] directors that really pushed the boundaries of film," Golding said. "People that go out on a limb to stand out and try to bring something new to the table. Same goes with Paul Feig in [A Simple Favor], giving his spin on a genre that he's not known for. For Jon [M. Chu], putting out the weight of Asians around the world on his shoulders and killing it. Those are the types of directors I want to work with, people who stand within the arena; in the blood and in the sand, fighting their hardest to do good."

While Golding has been thrust into the spotlight over the past few months, he's trying to stay grounded despite his newfound stardom. "I think I'm level-headed enough to understand that it's hard work that really pays off, and I think the understanding of these opportunities come far and few between, so take advantage of them; work your hardest," he said. "That's what we've been doing for the past sort of year-and-a-half. But for me, it's really the joy in creating what I have loved my entire life, and that's great movies. I love cinema altogether. So for me, it's the greatest dream."
"It's so inspiring getting these stories from everybody of how it affects them, and how they intend to help share the love."
Of course, one of the most rewarding parts about his success, specifically with Crazy Rich Asians, has been seeing the fan response. "It's been a very vocal crowd," he explained. "They're like, 'This is the first time that I've cried in the cinema, not because of the story, but because of what I see on screen and what it means to that person.' It's so inspiring getting these stories from everybody of how it affects them, and how they intend to help share the love."
So, what does Golding have in store next? While he admitted that sci-fi is his "dream genre," what it truly comes down to is finding scripts that speak to him. "It doesn't matter which genre it falls in. If it's a movie that I would want to watch, that's something that I want to be a part of," he said. "Just doing justice to great material is what I'm meant for."
The Dior Saddle Bag Is Nice, but This One's Named After Princess Diana
If you're a fashion girl, you're probably familiar with the classic Lady Dior bag and the signature Gancio clasp spotted on Salvatore Ferragamo Lady D chain-strap designs. But you might not have realized that these two creations were named after and popularized by the late Princess Diana.
While she collected an assortment of luxury handbags throughout the years, Diana's black quilted Dior satchel with gold hardware and her many Ferragamo crossbody pouches became iconic. Today, both brands still market these silhouettes with ties to the beloved royal. Read on to see Princess Diana wearing them, then shop the modernized versions.
I Swapped All My Heavy-Duty Products For Fancy Organic Stuff, and My Skin Was PISSED
My skin has been doused in every type of chemical approved by the FDA for decades. If it'll degunk my pores, lighten my under-eye circles, or zap my zits, I'll pile it on. But every few years, I call for a cleanse. I put all my heavy-duty products in a box, shove it under my sink, and swap in natural, organic skin care. A few weeks ago, I stocked up on one of my favorite organic brands (which shall remain nameless, as it's not relevant to today's investigation) and prepared for a month of clean living. Ten days later, my chin was dotted with tiny, angry bumps that lasted several weeks, until I tweaked my regimen.
Why had the skincare gods forsaken me? It had been years since my cystic acne was banished by a five-month supply of Accutane, and I rarely experienced any annoying, surface-level zits. It wasn't "that time of the month," nor had my diet changed dramatically. No late-night ice cream binges, and my water intake was steady. Could it be the organic products? Had my skin become so dependent on chemicals that the natural cleanser didn't make an impact? Was my skin purging, the way it does after an intense facial brings everything to the surface?
I consulted two dermatologists to find out what could have happened.

Try Not to Cringe as You Watch Jimmy Kimmel Teach The Bachelor's Colton About Sex
Colton Underwood's run as fourth runner-up on Becca Kufrin's season of The Bachelorette wasn't memorable only for his messy love triangle with Bachelor in Paradise's Tia Booth, but also for his honest confession that he's still a virgin. Since he was eliminated just before going into the Fantasy Suites with Becca, and we assume he didn't hook up with Tia on BIP in, um, that way, the stakes are higher than usual for the 26-year-old former NFL player, who will head into season 23 of The Bachelor looking for his one true love.
While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel's late night show on Wednesday night, he told the host that he's not necessarily waiting for marriage. "I'm just waiting for the right person, the right heart, and I put a lot of value in it," he admitted. Fortunately (or rather, unfortunately) for Colton, Jimmy took it upon himself to teach the reality star about the birds and the bees. "I wanted to help Colton," Jimmy joked. "He's never done it and I have, a lot. I'm really good at it, actually."
He began by asking Colton if he even knows what sex is, to which he responded, "I have an idea. You know, I think when a man loves a woman then they go into the bedroom." Jimmy then made sure to clarify. "Doesn't have to be the bedroom, could be a car, could be an elevator, could be the Fantasy Suite," he explained. "My wife's parents conceived her on the kitchen table."
Once that TMI wrapped up, Jimmy showed Colton a few diagrams of the male and female reproductive systems, and we tried not to pass out from secondhand embarrassment. Check out the cringey clip above!

9 Things Every Parent With an Anxious Child Should Try
The following story, written by Renee Jain, was originally published on GoZen.
As all the kids line up to go to school, your son, Timmy, turns to you and says, "I don't want to take the bus. My stomach hurts. Please don't make me go." You cringe and think, Here we go again. What should be a simple morning routine explodes into a daunting challenge.
You look at Timmy and see genuine terror. You want to comfort him. You want to ease the excessive worry that's become part and parcel of his everyday life. First, you try logic. "Timmy, we walk an extra four blocks to catch this bus because this driver has an accident-free driving record!" He doesn't budge.
You provide reassurance. "I promise you'll be OK. Timmy, look at me . . . you trust me, right?" Timmy nods. A few seconds later he whispers, "Please don't make me go."
You resort to anger: "Timothy Christopher, you will get on this bus RIGHT NOW, or there will be serious consequences. No iPad for one week!" He looks at you as if you're making him walk the plank. He climbs onto the bus, defeated. You feel terrible.
If any of this sounds familiar, know you are not alone. Most parents would move mountains to ease their child's pain. Parents of kids with anxiety would move planets and stars as well. It hurts to watch your child worry over situations that, frankly, don't seem that scary. Here's the thing: To your child's mind, these situations are genuinely threatening. And even perceived threats can create a real nervous system response. We call this response anxiety and I know it well.
I'd spent the better part of my childhood covering up a persistent, overwhelming feeling of worry until, finally, in my early twenties, I decided to seek out a solution. What I've learned over the last two decades is that many people suffer from debilitating worry. In fact, 40 million American adults, as well as 1 in 8 children, suffer from anxiety. Many kids miss school, social activities and a good night's rest just from the worried thoughts in their head. Many parents suffer from frustration and a feeling of helplessness when they witness their child in this state day in, day out.
What I also learned is that while there is no one-size-fits-all solution for anxiety, there are a plethora of great research-based techniques that can help manage it - many of which are simple to learn. WAIT! Why didn't my parents know about this? Why didn't I know about it? Why don't they teach these skills in school?
I wish I could go back in time and teach the younger version of myself how to cope, but of course, that's not possible. What is possible is to try to reach as many kids and parents as possible with these coping skills. What is possible is to teach kids how to go beyond just surviving to really finding meaning, purpose and happiness in their lives. To this end, I created an anxiety relief program for kids called GoZen! Here are 9 ideas straight from that program that parents of anxious children can try right away:

The New House of Cards Teaser Confirms Kevin Spacey Is Being Killed Off in Season 6
House of Cards is finally giving us a clue as to how Kevin Spacey's Frank Underwood will be written out of the political drama when it returns to Netflix in November. Although specifics are still under wraps, the latest trailer for the upcoming episodes confirms that Frank is currently six feet under, leaving President Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) in charge. What's more is that she doesn't seem to care in the least that her dearly departed, disgraced husband is no longer with us.
"I'll tell you this though, Francis. When they bury me, it won't be in my backyard," Claire says, before breaking the fourth wall to look directly at the camera. "And when they pay their respects, they'll have to wait in line." The camera then zooms in on two gravestones in a family plot: one for Francis J. Underwood, which marks his death as happening in 2017, directly next to his father, Calvin T. Underwood.
The sixth and final season of House of Cards will air on Nov. 2 without Spacey's Frank, leaving Claire to her solo political machinations. Spacey, who is an executive producer on the thriller, was accused of sexual harassment and assault by actor Anthony Rapp in October 2017 and was subsequently fired by Netflix. At that point, all 13 episodes of the season had already been almost completely written, so production was mainly halted to rework the remaining episodes to focus on Claire. Now only eight will air, the last of which will see Wright in the director's chair.
Someone Made a Montage of All the Best Lines From The Office, and Now I Can't Stop Laughing
Rumors about a potential reboot of The Office are still just that, but luckily there's something to keep fans busy in the meantime. YouTube user Estelle Grignon - an internet genius who surely deserves a medal or trophy of some kind - cobbled together one second from each episode of the comedy (up until Michael leaves the show) into a single video. The resulting montage runs just over two and a half minutes, but manages to pack in such iconic phrases as:
- "Miracle whip."
- "Somebody's bitch."
- "That's what she said."
- "We need a new plague."
- "Dwight, you ignorant slut."
- "Hot and juicy redhead."
- "Did I stutter?!"
- "It's Britney, bitch."
- "Your boob is out."
And then, of course, a ton of screaming. Watch it for yourself above.

Serial's Third Season Is Coming Back With a Totally New Approach
This season, we're tackling the whole criminal justice system. Hear the trailer and subscribe today to get the first episode the moment it drops. https://t.co/TscuRSdBuO pic.twitter.com/YdyDeggnaK
- Serial (@serial) September 5, 2018
It's official: Serial is returning for its third season in just a few weeks. The podcast's official Twitter account announced on Wednesday that it was returning with new episodes every Thursday starting on Sept. 20, but fans of the show should expect a slightly different approach from the investigative podcast this time around.
Serial's third season will focus on the American criminal justice system, specifically in Cleveland, OH. That means that instead of tackling one specific case as it has in previous seasons - season one deals with a murder case in Baltimore while season two tells the story of a US soldier who was captured by the Taliban - season three of Serial will take a deep dive into a few "ordinary cases" straight out of Cleveland's courtrooms.
"I don't think we can understand how the criminal justice system works by interrogating one extraordinary case," host Sarah Koenig narrates in the season three trailer. "Ordinary cases are where we need to look. This season of Serial, we do just that."
According to the trailer, the focus is on Cleveland this season "because they let us record everywhere, [like] courtrooms, back hallways, judges' chambers, the prosecutor's office." Koenig and fellow producer Emmanuel Dzotsi spent a year in the city, following the cases as they jumped from the courtrooms, into people's homes, and sometimes even into prison. The podcast will deliver an inside look at a new case every week, from the smallest misdemeanors to the most crucial felonies.
Here's the Exact Date and Time Murphy Brown Is Returning to Prime Time
Revival mania has hit Hollywood hard, and it looks like the upcoming TV season is going to be continuing that trend. CBS is getting in on the game with a revival of its iconic workplace comedy Murphy Brown. Set in the newsroom of a cable network, the sitcom's return couldn't be more perfectly timed for today's pop culture. But when will the updated series make its debut?
CBS announced its Fall schedule in early July, including the premiere date for Murphy Brown. The sitcom will occupy the 9:30 p.m. time slot on Thursday nights, starting on Sept. 27. It'll be part of a two-hour comedy block on the channel that also includes the two shows in the Big Bang Theory universe (the long-running original plus prequel/spinoff Young Sheldon), as well as Mom.
During its original run in the '80s and '90s, Murphy Brown skewered politics and tackled timely issues of the day in an often groundbreaking fashion, all through the lens of its newsroom setting. Creator Diane English confirmed that the reboot will follow this pattern, this time taking on today's hot-button political and media topics. Most of the original cast will be returning, including Candice Bergen, Faith Ford, Joe Regalbuto, and Grant Shaud, plus some new cast members such as Jake McDorman.
CBS has not yet released a trailer, since the show's production operates on a tighter-than-average shooting schedule in order to be as timely as possible. Instead, the show released a cheeky "where are they now?" video of the actors in character along with footage from the original - check it out below!
We Have Good News and Bad News About A Star Is Born's Soundtrack
On Aug. 30, Lady Gaga made an announcement that both delighted and disappointed us. When it comes to the fourth remake of the classic Hollywood tale A Star Is Born, we have official confirmation that there will be a soundtrack full of blissful bops. Given the fact that Gaga belts it out in the trailer, we're not surprised. The album is replete with an electrifying 34 tracks to accompany the release of the movie, and there's even a full tracklist to get you all amped up.
So what, you may ask, is the bad news? Unfortunately, we won't get to hear any of the music prior to the Oct. 5 release, as the soundtrack is set to drop on the same day. Then again, maybe it's a blessing; we can experience the magic of the music while we witness the moment on screen. If you like, you can preorder the soundtrack through whatever music service you use. Oh, and let's not forget the tracklist, which you can find below!

Here's When The Good Doctor Will Return For Its Second Season
It's been a few months since fans last checked in with Dr. Shaun Murphy, but thankfully, the wait for The Good Doctor season two is almost over. And that certainly comes as a relief to anyone who is still reeling from that cliffhanger ending that found Shaun facing his mentor's brain cancer. The question of how the brilliant doctor will deal with Dr. Aaron Glassman's diagnosis will play a major role in season two if the new trailer is any indication. In a voiceover, Dr. Glassman teases, "Shaun has a uniquely gifted mind. He faces challenges most of us could never imagine. He faces challenges most of us could never imagine. Like every one of us, he's made mistakes. But he sees things and has insights that are truly remarkable. Shaun gives people hope . . . including me."
So when exactly will Shaun and Dr. Glassman return? In July, ABC confirmed that The Good Doctor season two will premiere Monday, Sept. 24 at 10 p.m. The network is wisely keeping its number one new drama in the same time slot it was in last season. That means if you still use a DVR to keep up with your favorite shows, there's no need to worry about missing a minute of season two.
If the premiere date isn't enough to satiate you until the new season, then let it be known that the title of the first episode back has been revealed: it's simply, "Hello" - but that's not even the best part. According to a tweet from series writer Thomas L. Moran, the season two premiere was written by the show's star, Freddie Highmore. If the gifted actor turns out to be even half as talented as a writer, then prepare yourselves, because The Good Doctor's return is sure to be an emotional one.

How Many Calories Do I Need to Eat to Lose Weight? This Formula Breaks It Down
If you feel like you've done everything to lose weight - keto, intermittent fasting, Whole30, fitness plans, counting macros - and still aren't seeing the scale budge, it's understandably frustrating. After all, putting so much time and effort into meal prep and reading up on the latest diet trends can be exhausting, especially if you don't see any results.
In reality, losing weight boils down to a simple science: burning more calories than you take in. This calories-in, calories-out calculation may seem simplistic, but it does get a little more complicated when you realize that not everyone's bodies burn calories the same.
Calculating Basal Metabolic Rate and Total Energy Expenditure
To find out how many calories you burn a day, you need to know your total energy expenditure, or TDEE. It starts with finding your basal metabolic rate (BMR), which you can get measured with a machine like the InBody Test, which sends electrodes through your body and calculates your BMI, body fat percentage, and basal metabolic rate, among other stats.
You can also do a math equation to find your BMR using the Harris-Benedict formula based on your total body weight, height, age, and sex. It's a little more complicated, but it's more accurate than quick-and-dirty formulas found online. For a woman, the calculation is:
BMR = 655 + (1.8 x height in centimeters) + (9.6 x weight in kilograms) - (4.7 x age in years)
For a woman who is 30, 5'6" (167.6 centimeters), and 150 pounds (68 kilograms), her BMR would be: 655 + 301.7 + 653 - 141 = approximately 1,470 calories a day.
From there, you multiply your BMR by your activity level: 1.2 if you're sedentary, 1.375 if you do light exercise one to three days a week, 1.55 if you do moderate exercise six to seven days a week, 1.75 if you're very active (hard exercise every day or exercising twice a day), and 1.9 if you're extra active (hard exercise two or more times per day).
So for that 150-pound person who is moderately active, it would be: 1,470 x 1.55 = approximately 2,280. That's about how many calories your body burns on any given day. To lose weight, you would have to create a calorie deficit.
How to Find Out How Many Calories You Need to Lose Weight
"One pound is equal to 3,500 calories. Therefore, if someone was looking to lose one pound per week, they would need to cut their daily calories down by 500 calories per day," registered dietitian and personal trainer Jim White, ACSM, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, told POPSUGAR.
If your TDEE is in fact 2,232, to lose one pound a week, you would have to eat 1,780 calories a day to eat in a healthy calorie deficit and see progress on the scale. Ultimately, this formula is just a guideline; you should consult with your doctor or dietitian to determine your exact calorie needs.

5 Ways Dentists Keep Coffee From Staining Their Teeth
Coffee has some serious perks, beyond the obvious. Research shows that it may lower your risk for diabetes and heart disease and even help you live longer. But it can also be damaging to your teeth. "As a general rule of thumb, anything your mom would yell at you for spilling on a white tablecloth (things like coffee, tea, and red wine) will stain your teeth, too," Dr. Matthew Messina, DDS, a consumer advisor for the American Dental Association and assistant professor at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, told POPSUGAR. That's because all of these staining substances contain tannins - compounds found in plants that more readily stick to surfaces, including your teeth.
The good news: your dentist doesn't expect you to stop drinking coffee - in fact, a lot of them drink it themselves - and if you practice good oral hygiene, staining should be a nonissue. Here, coffee-loving dentists share their tips on how to enjoy a cup without messing up those pearly whites.
What Exactly Is a Rep in Strength Training? A Personal Trainer Explains
In strength training and weightlifting, there's one word that gets mentioned over and over again: rep. It pops up when talking about performing an exercise, putting together a circuit, and completing sets of exercises. But what exactly is a rep?
Rep is short for repetition. "A rep or repetition is one complete motion of exercise," said ACSM-certified personal trainer Jim White, RDN, exercise physiologist and owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios. "So if you shoot for eight to 12 reps per set, you are performing the exercise eight to 12 times during the set." For example, if you're doing a biceps curl with a dumbbell, the rep would be one movement of starting with your arm fully extended with your hand down by your leg, then bending your arm (with your elbows acting as a hinge) until your hand reaches up toward your shoulder, then slowly extending back down to the starting position: that's one rep.
A set is the number of reps performed in a row, usually with only a second or two in between. So if your workout calls for three sets of 10 reps, each set will involve 10 movements in a row, then usually a short break (between 45 seconds and two minutes) before starting the next set.
The number of reps and sets you do depends on your fitness level, but a good place to start is with a couple sets of between 10 and 20 reps. Eager to put your strength to the test? Try this 10-move arm workout to tone your upper body.
Curious to Try the Keto Diet? Here's Everything You Can and Cannot Eat
The keto diet has been one of the most talked-about health trends in the past year. The low-carb, high-fat diet induces a state of ketosis in your body, creating ketones that burn fat instead of the glucose converted from carbohydrates. In other words, the keto (short for ketogenic) diet forces your body to burn fat instead of sugar, which can lead to potential weight loss.
Just like any other diet, the keto diet has its pros and cons, and while it remains highly controversial among dietitians and nutritionists, some devotees have reported successful weight loss.
So which foods can you eat and which ones should you avoid? If you're curious about trying the keto diet, read through for a helpful guide on everything you can and can't eat.
This Is Exactly How Much Salt You Should Be Eating in a Day, According to Dietitians
If you don't pour the salt shaker on all your meals or down a package of instant ramen noodles every day, you're probably not concerned with how much sodium you're ingesting. But it can lurk in even the most innocent of packaged foods, and since the standard American diet relies a lot on processed food and takeout, you could be eating much more sodium than you realize.
We spoke to dietitians who broke down just how much sodium you should eat in a day, what happens if you eat too much, and how to eat the right amount for weight loss. Read on to find out if salt is a hidden culprit in your diet.
Confused What Sugar Alcohols Actually Are? This Dietitian Explains
Grabbing a sugar-free protein bar or sugar-free candy may seem like a healthier option; you'll save calories from the lack of sugar, won't experience blood sugar spikes, and it's (usually) safe for people who are keto or have diabetes. But what exactly are the sugar alcohols used instead? They're different from the traditional sweeteners we think of (stevia, sucralose, aspartame, etc.), but still add zero to minimal calories.
Sugar alcohols are naturally found in some fruits, vegetables, and mushrooms in small amounts explained Kristin Koskinen, RDN. But the most common ones are found in processed foods to add sweetness without the calories. Sugar alcohols are a carbohydrate with a unique chemical compound that's not quite sugar, but not quite alcohol.
"Different sugar alcohols include sorbitol, mannitol, maltitol, and lactitol; the '-ol' is what tells us it's an alcohol, though not to be confused with ethanol [grain or drinking alcohol]," Koskinen told POPSUGAR.
Although they typically have zero to a couple calories per serving, they are poorly digested, which can have a laxative effect, she explained. Since sugar alcohols aren't completely digested, they become a food source for your gut flora, which metabolize the sugar alcohols and produce short-chain fatty acids and gas. If eaten in excess, people may experience bloating, flatulence, or stomach discomfort - not necessarily pleasant.
And while the negative side effects make sugar alcohols not seem worth it, they are considered safe when eaten in moderation. Currently, there hasn't been a set recommendation for a daily intake, but if you're worried about digestive issues, it's best to eat them in moderation. Check the label for any of the "-ol" ingredients, and luckily, most packaged food now contains grams of sugar alcohols on the nutrition label.

Cheese-Lovers, Here's All the Dairy You Can Eat on the Keto Diet
Over the last year, the keto diet has skyrocketed in popularity, probably for one very distinct reason: it encourages you to eat fatty foods. The only major caveat is that you have to keep your carb intake low. Offsetting this often-difficult task, however, is the keto diet's allowance of another beloved food group: dairy. Most cheeses are low in carbs, making them perfectly acceptable for the keto meal plan. The same goes for fatty dairy foods like butter and heavy cream, which almost seems too good to be true. A diet that gives you the thumbs-up when you eat butter? It's not hard to see how it caught on and spread like wildfire.
Although you won't be able to enjoy the glorious combination that is cheese and bread (bye-bye, buttered toast and bagels with cream cheese) if you've gone keto, you'll still be able to indulge in plenty of decadent recipes. Click through to see which dairy products you can eat on the keto diet, along with some keto-friendly recipe ideas.
