If You Take an OTC Sleeping Pill Every Night, Stop! This Is What Experts Have to Say

It doesn't matter how much more you try to squeeze into your busy life, at the end of the day, sleep is nonnegotiable. Maybe that's why there's an entire industry focused on helping you achieve your ideal amount of shut-eye in the form of over-the-counter (OTC) medications. These sleeping aids come in liquid, gel capsule, and tablet options, like ZzzQuil and Unisom, and seem to work like magic, delivering fast, easy access to rest. But that convenience might come at a cost if you're relying solely on these aids to fall and stay asleep. Even the bottles and packages they come in include labels warning that use is not recommended beyond 14 days without the supervision of a doctor.

To help better understand why, POPSUGAR talked with two sleep experts who agreed that constant use of OTC sleep aids is, by and large, not worth the risk. Read on for why, including what they're made of, potentially harmful side effects, and interactions.

What Are the Common Ingredients in OTC Sleep Aids?

The top brands of OTC sleep aids contain one of two main ingredients: diphenhydramine and doxylamine. Both prescription and OTC medications that contain these drugs are called sedative hypnotics, and generally speaking, there's not much difference between the two.

One glaring similarity is that helping restless individuals fall and stay asleep isn't actually these ingredients' main purpose. These drugs are antihistamines, which are intended to be taken for allergy relief. "The side effect of these medicines is they make you sleepy," said Aneesa Das, MD, an assistant professor of sleep medicine at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, OH. "If you're going to take them, you have to take caution, because they have a lot of side effects, so they're not great as a long-term solution."

What Are the Potential Side Effects From OTC Sleep Aids?

Some of those side effects include confusion, rapid heart rate, and increased risk for falls, Das said, adding that they're also associated with blurred vision, dry mouth, bad breath, constipation, and urinary retention, which makes it difficult to go to the bathroom, especially for men. "There's something called the Beers List, which is part of the American Geriatric Society, and it's a list of medications that we have to be careful with. Why? Because all these drugs that make you a little sleepy come with a high rate of falls and fractures, especially in elderly patients. And all sedative hypnotics, OTC or prescription, are on that list," said Rajkumar Dasgupta (Dr. Raj), MD, an assistant professor of clinical medicine at the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine division of Keck Medicine at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

"Diphenhydramine has also been associated with early-onset dementia," Dr. Raj said. "Those with memory concerns, especially older patients, should avoid OTC sleep aids containing diphenhydramine and doxylamine."

Do OTC Sleep Aids Interact With Other Medicines?

If you're taking anything else, prescription or otherwise, OTC medications to aid with sleep could react with those ingredients and lead to even more harmful side effects. "If you have underlying medical conditions, OTC sleep aid medications may have interactions or make those conditions worse," Dr. Raj said. The National Institutes of Health links to a service where you can check drug-drug interactions, called Drug Interactions API, but you should consult a doctor.

Additionally, people should avoid combining OTC sleep aid medications with alcohol, the doctors say. "This would be extreme and it's not common, but you can develop parasomnia," Dr. Raj said, describing the diagnosis as abnormal occurrences while you sleep, like sleepwalking.

What If I Take Other Medicines That Make You Sleepy as Sleeping Aids?

Medicines like NyQuil, Tylenol PM, and Advil PM can make you sleepy because they include either diphenhydramine or doxylamine, but their primary use is not to serve as a sleeping aid but to treat other ailments, like pain and fever, with their other ingredients.

If you reach for these often to help you sleep, you might want to reconsider. "Any time you find yourself taking add-on medicines that you don't need, there's a major downside," Dr. Raj said. That's especially true when it comes to nonsteroidal medications, like ibuprofen, because they may cause gastro-intestinal upset or, ultimately, ulcers.

No problem, you'll just have a glass of wine before bed, right? Think again. Although alcohol is a depressant and may have the initial effect of increasing drowsiness, consuming it may have the opposite effect in the long run. "While alcohol may sometimes help you fall asleep quicker, it actually increases sleep fragmentation in the second half of the night, so the net change with alcohol is that it decreases your sleep quality," Das said.

So Is It Safe to Take OTC Sleep Aids Every Day?

If you decide to try OTC sleep aids to improve your sleep, know that they're not intended to be used for more than two weeks at a time, at the very least to avoid masking the symptoms of a larger issue.

Even then, their use can come with risks, as mentioned above. A better option might be working on revamping your daily habits, like only using your bed for sleeping and sticking to the same wake-up time every single day.

Blast Your Lower Body With This Trainer's Effective and Strengthening 3-Move Workout

Strength machines may be confusing or even intimidating to use, but fortunately, NASM-certified trainer Kelsey Wells utilizes her Instagram to help us feel more comfortable and confident at the gym.

Kelsey's three-move workout will help you increase your lower-body strength and build lean muscle. The workout only uses two machines - the leg press and hamstring curl machine - and is done in a pyramid style, "increasing weight as you decrease reps," Kelsey said. If you're ready for a lower-body blast, check out her workout ahead.

The Leg Workout

Before getting started, be sure to make sure you're warmed up (we suggest something like this dynamic warmup). "Be sure to rest between every set" in order for your muscles to recover, Kelsey advised. Don't forget to cool down once you're done.

This Is the Surprising Thing That Happens to Your Metabolism When You Lose Weight

When you lose weight, your body goes through a series of changes both externally and internally. One extremely important internal function that is affected by weight loss is your metabolism.

To learn how your weight loss affects your metabolism, POPSUGAR spoke to Avigdor Arad, PhD, RDN, CDE, director of the Mount Sinai Physiolab, and Holly Lofton, MD, director of the medical weight management program at NYU.

What Is Metabolism and How Does It Work?

Before going any further, it's important to understand exactly what your metabolism is and how it works. "Metabolism relates to the ability to produce energy from fat, from sugar, from protein, and also to store energy," Dr. Arad told POPSUGAR.

Essentially, your metabolism works by converting the energy from food and liquid to either energy it can use immediately, in the form of sugar, or stored energy that it will use later, in the form of fat, Dr. Arad explained.

When you hear people talk about metabolism, they typically mean their metabolic rate, which is the number of calories (or how much energy) they burn in a period of time. Everyone has a different resting metabolic rate (RMR), the amount of energy/calories your body needs for things like your lungs, heart, brain, and muscles to function in the basal state (before you exercise and eat), Dr. Arad said.

In order to figure out what your RMR is, Dr. Arad recommends getting an RMR test (typically around $250), which is offered by specialized clinics like the Mt. Sinai Physiolab.

How Weight Loss Affects Your Metabolism

The connection between your metabolism and weight loss has to do with your body's energy production. When you lose weight, you lose both fat and muscle tissue, which causes your body to produce less energy due to the loss of active tissue that is found in muscle.

As a result, "when we lose weight, we actually lower our metabolism," Dr. Lofton said. Because your body is burning fewer calories, it's important to eat fewer calories to prevent gaining back the weight you've lost, Dr. Arad said.

Everyone has different caloric needs, and there isn't a universal amount of calories we can recommend you eat to prevent weight loss. The USDA dietary guidelines recommend adult women consume 1,600 to 2,400 calories a day and adult men consume 2,000 to 3,000 calories a day. To get a generic idea of how many calories you should eat to lose weight, use this formula. If you'd like to determine your exact daily caloric needs, we recommend speaking to a registered dietitian or specialists like Dr. Arad and Dr. Lofton.

How to Boost Your Metabolism

A slow metabolism may not sound ideal, but according to Dr. Lofton, it isn't necessarily a bad thing. If you're interested in boosting your metabolism, Dr. Arad recommends eating more healthy fats and protein and consuming less sugar. Both doctors also advise increasing your physical activity with workouts that will increase muscle mass, like weightlifting.

The reason you should add weightlifting to your workout routine is because muscle is an active tissue that produces a lot of energy, Dr. Arad explained. "If you build more muscle and you have more muscles that require energy, then you're going to increase your metabolic rate," he said. Here's a four-week strength-training plan to get you started.

If You Want to Lose Weight and Keep It Off, a Doctor Says to Skip Keto and Intermittent Fasting

It's no surprise that the low-carb, high-fat keto diet and intermittent fasting are the most popular diets of 2018. Both approaches have helped people lose weight and improve their health, but according to obesity medicine physician and scientist Fatima Cody Stanford, MD, MPH, they aren't sustainable for long-term weight loss.

"When I prescribe things to patients, I like for them to be scientifically sound, ,eaning there's been a study done that's been done well," Dr. Stanford told POPSUGAR. Specifically, Dr. Stanford looks for studies that show long-term benefits when it comes the keto diet and intermittent fasting.

Related: Not Losing as Much Weight as You'd Like on the Keto Diet? This Could Be the Reason

"When we look at the ketogenic diet, the research or the literature that's been done long-term really points to the ketogenic diet being excellent for patients that have seizure disorders or refractory seizure disorders," Dr. Stanford explained. Experts have also found that people with type 2 diabetes benefit from following the keto diet, because it lowers blood sugar and insulin levels and enables their bodies to use fat as the main source of energy.

While the keto diet has been proven effective for people with specific medical issues, "With regards to long-term benefits for weight and weight regulation, the studies have not been supportive," Dr. Stanford said. Although the keto diet may work for some in the long-term, Dr. Stanford said to consider whether or not you'll be able to (or want to) sustain it for five, 10, 15, or even 20 years.

Related: Intermittent Fasting Works, but Only If You Fast For This Long

"When we flip over to intermittent fasting, there are better studies that have been done long-term," she explained. There are a variety of ways to follow intermittent fasting, with 12:12 (you eat in a 12-hour window, and fast for 12 hours) considered to be the easiest. While intermittent fasting beats keto on long-term sustainability, Dr. Stanford said, "Overall, there's a limited population that's able to really conform to intermittent fasting, or IF, over the long-term."

This doesn't mean that IF and keto won't work to help you initially begin to lose weight. But if your goal is long-term (we're talking longer than a few months) weight loss, Dr. Stanford advised finding a way of eating that you can commit for years to come. This will look different for everyone, but Dr. Stanford recommends beginning to eat lean proteins, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits to help you achieve your goals.

Jennifer Lopez and Milo Ventimiglia Teamed Up to Play "Can You Feel It?" and Things Got Weird

You never know what to expect when you play a game on The Tonight Show. That's what Jennifer Lopez and Milo Ventimiglia learned while promoting their film Second Act on Tuesday night. Jennifer first joined Jimmy for a few rounds of "Can You Feel It?," a game where each person had to identify an object hidden in a box. While J Lo and Jimmy had their fair share of dramatic reactions to the secret items (the "Dinero" singer thoroughly dismantled a tiny snowman), things took an even funnier turn when Milo joins in.

The This Is Us actor plays J Lo's husband in their film, so it's only natural he showed up to lend her emotional support amidst this guessing game. During the last round, he vowed to go "all in" and rapidly stuck his hand into a bowl of guacamole, alongside Jimmy and Jennifer. While those two quickly realized what they'd touched, Milo looked like he may have seen a ghost or remembered he left the slow cooker on, as he took a full 10 seconds and a handful of avocado to recollect himself. The memorable moment starts at the six-minute mark, but you'd be better off watching the video in full. You can thank me later.

Brace Yourself! It Sounds Like Miley Cyrus Will Be in an Episode of Black Mirror

If you're eagerly awaiting the release of Black Mirror's fifth season, we have an exciting detail to tie you over as the anticipation builds. It sounds like Miley Cyrus will be starring in an upcoming episode of the Netflix series, according to her sister Brandi Cyrus.

Last month, rumors began circling about the 26-year-old singer's unexpected appearance on the show after she was spotted filming in South Africa. Brandi revealed that she accompanied Miley on this trip during the Dec. 11 episode of Your Favorite Thing Podcast With Wells and Brandi and shared details about her sister's experience.

Brandi never mentioned the show by name, but she did confirm that Miley filmed an episode alongside another Netflix star, Ozark's Marc Menchaca. It's no surprise that specifics about a potential Miley appearance are so hard to come by since the creators of Black Mirror are famously secretive about the arc of the show. We'll just have to wait and see what the fifth season brings - and fans expect we'll be seeing it sooner rather than later.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2 Takes Us on a Journey to 2 Brand-New Cities

Amazon's truly delightful, award-winning comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has returned for season two, which means your eyes are about to be treated to a visual feast. Not only does Miriam (Rachel Brosnahan) wow us with a deluge of colorful, glamorous ensembles, but the second season also whisks viewers out of the Upper West Side and the dingy comedy clubs in Greenwich Village to some seriously cool locations: Paris and the Catskills (I promise the latter is much more exciting than it sounds).

Note: minor spoilers for season two ahead!

The season begins with Midge and her father, Abe Weissman (Tony Shalhoub), venturing across the Atlantic in search of Rose (Marin Hinkle). It seems she's up and left their cushy life in New York City in favor of a simpler existence in Paris. If you're wondering how the show got all the scenes in the European city to look so authentic, it's because it opted to shoot on location.

"We went to Paris because we had laid in groundwork for it with Rose [Midge's mom] that she had happy memories in Paris where she went to school," executive producer Daniel Palladino explained to The Hollywood Reporter. "And so having [her] become unhappy with her circumstances, we thought she'd run to a place where she was unabashedly happy before she got married."

The production team took the same approach to shooting the back half of the season in upstate New York, which sees the Weissmans making their annual pilgrimage to a resort in the Catskills.

"We shot in this beautiful resort in Deposit, NY," Brosnahan said to Jimmy Fallon during an appearance on The Tonight Show. The resort in question is Scott's Oquaga Lake House, which has been owned by the same family since its opening in 1869. "Rumor has it that years and years ago, the resort turned down Dirty Dancing," she went on. "And so when we came to them, they were like, 'Get on over here! Sign us up. We can't miss our shot!'"

According to owner Patty Holdrege, they were more than happy to let the crew film at their establishment. "They were looking for an old-style Catskill resort, and we were fortunate enough to have what they were looking for," she told FOX affiliate WICZ back in April, before confirming that their resort was, in fact, scouted by Dirty Dancing. "They did come here and look at us for Dirty Dancing. At that time we were extremely busy, and we opted that we just couldn't do it. If we had known where that was going, we might actually have done something about it."

As glitzy as the show's scenes in Paris are - including Midge's heartbreaking stand-up set - the story really blossoms in the Catskills. The area was a popular vacation destination for both families living in NYC at that time, as well as aspiring comics looking to try out new material, so it couldn't be a more perfect fit for Miriam's misadventures.

"We told Amazon pretty much while we were doing the pilot that we wanted to re-create the Catskills in Season 2," Palladino told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's an emblem and a big part of Jewish cultural history here in New York and the surrounding states."

Before you start worrying that your favorite "mad divorcée" has left behind the streets of Manhattan for good, don't - Midge still spends plenty of time making the good people of New York City laugh into their cocktails.

We're Already Committed to Watching Every Second of This Audrey Hepburn Drama Series

If you've dressed up as every Audrey Hepburn character for Halloween, from Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany's to Roman Holiday's Ann, we've got fantastic news for you - a drama series centered around the Oscar-winning actress's life is currently in the works.

Wildside, the production company that gave us Jude Law's The Young Pope and the critically-acclaimed My Brilliant Friend, is developing the series based on a treatment written by Hepburn's son Luca Dotti and writer Luigi Spinola. While details about the series are pretty scarce, Wildside has revealed that the show will follow Hepburn's "formative years." Dotti and Spinola have worked together in the past, coauthoring Audrey At Home, Memories of My Mother's Kitchen, a biography and cookbook combination that followed Hepburn's life from her childhood in Holland to her life as a wife and mother. It also details her philanthropy work and travels for UNICEF. The New York Times bestseller is comprised of unpublished family photos, Hepburn's recipes, and bits of personal letters.

Production of the drama series is set to begin in 2020, with Dotti remaining involved to provide context for his mother's history. Stay tuned for more details as production moves forward!

If You Haven't Seen (or Heard of!) These 2018 Movies Yet, That Needs to Change

With the constant onslaught of content Hollywood seems to be flinging at us all year long, it's easy for plenty of good stuff to get lost in the mix. This is especially true for TV, which is more saturated with shows than ever, but it's also true for films! In 2018, there were so many great movies that simply did not get their time in the spotlight. Whether it was a small, limited release, less-than-great marketing, or the daunting shadow of a bigger blockbuster's release, we've picked out a handful of titles that sort of came and went. They may have slipped through the cracks once, but we're here to bubble them back up for you. Pay special attention; some of these are already getting award season recognition!

Expect to See These Netflix Shows Dominate Award Season

With the recent Golden Globe nominations, award season has officially kicked off. And while you may immediately think of movies when you hear "award season," TV is just as involved. TV series are celebrated at the Golden Globe Awards, the Critics' Choice Film + TV Awards, the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (aka the BAFTAs), and various Guild-specific shows.

There are so many platforms to watch TV shows on that it can be hard to keep up with all the different critically acclaimed shows. After all, there's no shortage of amazing, creative shows to watch, but not all of them are accessible on all platforms. Serious contenders like The Handmaid's Tale, Westworld, and This Is Us, for instance, are not available on Netflix; in fact, most shows that belong to premium cable channels such as Starz and HBO don't make deals with streaming platforms at all since they often have their own exclusive streaming options.

But there's still good news: if you have Netflix, you can catch up on several of the shows with serious awards buzz. From spy dramas to horror series and more, check out five of the most talked-about series you can catch on Netflix.

Watch the Creepy New Trailer For Sandra Bullock's Netflix Thriller, Bird Box

The new trailer for Netflix's upcoming horror film Bird Box has arrived, and it looks just as wild (and creepy) as the first. The film, based on Josh Malerman's novel of the same name, stars Sandra Bullock as Malorie, one of a handful of survivors in a postapocalyptic world that's been wiped out by a mysterious entity that causes people to commit suicide when seen. I don't know about you, but I'm already having nightmares just thinking about it. The film, which is like a cross between A Quiet Place and The Happening (an interesting mix, to say the least), also stars Sarah Paulson and John Malkovich. It begins streaming on Netflix and playing in select theaters on Dec. 21, so make sure you watch the leatest spooky trailer for yourself before then!

6 Award Season Contenders That Are Already Available on Netflix

As award season gears up for the next few months, there are a flood of movies being released and brought back to the forefront as critics and fans scramble to predict who the big nominees and winners will be. The Golden Globe nominations were a pretty good indicator of which way the wind is blowing: a diverse combination of critically acclaimed blockbusters like Black Panther, Crazy Rich Asians, and A Star Is Born, along with lesser-known titles that are suddenly the center of attention and a few movies that aren't even in theaters yet.

We're keeping an eye on contenders in all the categories, not just the big awards. If you are, too, here are a few movies you can catch on Netflix that are likely to play a part in the award season conversations.

This "Baby, It's Cold Outside" Cover Is Going Viral For Its Questionable Lyrics About Consent

The lyrics of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" just got a questionable makeover.

Over the last few years, "Baby, It's Cold Outside" has gone from being that cutesy duet you probably first heard in Elf to a song banned by radio stations over the holidays. The tune, which was written by Frank Loesser and popularized in the 1949 film Neptune's Daughter, has left fans feeling more and more uncomfortable due to its suggestive lyrics, which have led many to wonder if they describe an instance of date rape.

In a scene where a male character is trying to keep a woman from leaving, she sings "My answer is no," before he responds that she can't possibly leave because of the heavy snow. "What's the sense of hurting my pride?" he asks as she tries to leave again, before she eventually exclaims, "Say, what's in this drink?" It's that line in particular that has made people question if the man in the scenario has slipped her something stronger than just alcohol.

In a new version of the song, titled "Baby, Just GO Outside," Penn Holderness - the patriarch of the YouTube-famous Holderness Family - takes a heavy-handed approach to changing some of the male part's more controversial lyrics.

  • Woman: "I really can't stay."
  • Holderness: "OK, you're free to go."
  • Woman: "I've got to go away."
  • Holderness: "Understood, no means no."
  • Woman: "There's bound to be talk tomorrow."
  • Holderness: "Hopefully not about us."
  • Woman: "I simply must go."
  • Holderness: "Uber is right outside."

As Vox's Emily Crockett wrote in her explanation for the song's annual holiday controversy, the original lyrics come off as "a little rapey." But Holderness's new edition of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" misses the mark, too. The reason why people find the events described in the song troubling is because of how our perspectives about sexual consent and sexual assault have evolved since it came out in the 1940s, most recently with the #MeToo movement.

But, as we saw with the backlash to Henry Cavill's asinine comment to GQ in July about how he's scared to flirt with women because of #MeToo, lest he "be called a rapist or something," flirting and sexual assault are not the same thing. Flirting and rape are not the same thing. Context is key.

All of this is to say that Holderness's "Baby, Just GO Outside" is a condescending approach to course-correcting the song. With smug lyrics like "I know how to spell harassment" and "I do understand consent," the cover is making the song's male character the victim of a woman who won't take no for an answer, and it's putting all the responsibility on the woman to leave. Rather than fixing the uncomfortable vibe of the original, all Holderness's lyrics seem to do is mock the controversy, catering to an audience that feels the lyrics shouldn't have been criticized in the first place.

If you need a palate cleanser after watching the above take on the song, check out Lydia Liza and Josiah Lemanski's version, which is a much more effective way of tweaking the original lyrics to reflect consent.

Here's Everything We Know So Far About Ronin in Avengers: Endgame

The Avengers: Endgame trailer is finally here, and with it come more questions than answers. Chief among them: what happened to Hawkeye? Absent from Avengers: Infinity War, Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton finally reappears in the trailer for Endgame. But this isn't the quipping, arrow-shooting Avenger we knew before. He's first seen as a hooded figure with a sword, clearly having just won a violent confrontation, when he turns around and reveals himself to his former partner Black Widow.

Comic buffs immediately recognized his new identity as Ronin, a persona used by several characters (including Clint) in the Marvel comics. In the comic version of the Civil War storyline, Clint takes on the Ronin mantle when he rejoins the New Avengers after the Civil War, his Hawkeye persona having been tainted by a twisty time-travel-and-murder plotline. Clint continues his heroics as Ronin until reassuming the Hawkeye title as part of Steve Rogers's new team of Avengers.

In the comics, Clint's skills in the Ronin disguise - hand-to-hand combat and swordsmanship - were a tribute to the assassinated Steve, who had taught him those skills in the original days of the Avengers. We don't know yet what has prompted the movie version of Clint to swap out his bow and arrows for swords and fists, but given the death toll in Infinity War, it's entirely possible that he has a similar motivation here. His absence from Infinity War may also play a part in this new persona; after all, Hawkeye is the only Avenger to not participate in the battle and it's possible he wants to leave behind an identity that he feels failed his friends and failed Earth.

Ronin was a darker and grittier character than Hawkeye, and while we don't know much about his appearance in Endgame, it seems safe to say that a major change or loss has pushed Clint to this point. Whether it's guilt over failing the Avengers or perhaps losing his family (the Bartons' fates were unknown at the end of Infinity War, and the creators have been mum), Clint Barton is back but in a whole new way. We can't wait to see how it unfolds on April 26, 2019.

If Beale Street Could Talk: Here's the Powerful Story Behind the Adaptation

Barry Jenkins left us in awe with his lush, nuanced storytelling in 2016's Moonlight, and now, he's poised to do it again with the drama If Beale Street Could Talk. Due in theaters on Dec. 25, it's already a critical darling with three Golden Globe nominations to its name - and award season has barely begun.

In his latest project, Jenkins adapts James Baldwin's book of the same name, the title of which alludes to W.C. Handy's "Beale Street Blues." It pays homage to the Memphis street that became a bustling cultural spot for black artists and activists in the 20th century. Baldwin grounds his novel in 1970s Harlem, but there's a timelessness to it that resonates with the buildup to the civil rights movements and the current Black Lives Matter movement. And while it respects context, the book also develops its characters' internal lives with a tragic story that'll haunt you. Intrigued? Keep reading to see how this heart-wrenching novel unfolds.

Tish (played by KiKi Layne in the film adaptation), a black 19-year-old woman, narrates the novel. She's in love with Fonny (Stephan James), a 22-year-old black sculptor. They later become engaged and Tish becomes pregnant. Around the same time, Fonny is accused of raping a Puerto Rican woman named Victoria Rogers (Emily Rios). Although he doesn't commit the crime, authorities arrest him after Victoria picks him out in a lineup in which he's the only black man (and she's certain that her attacker was black). Tish determinedly finds a lawyer for Fonny to help him clear his name before their baby is born. We eventually learn that Fonny has been set up by Bell (Ed Skrein), a racist white policeman, who, before transferring to the precinct where he arrests Fonny, shot and killed a 12-year-old black boy.

The story concludes with both hope and tragedy. Tish eventually goes into labor when Fonny is out on bail with his trial postponed. However, there's still drama in the novel's ending. Tish's mother reaches out to Victoria and sees the poverty that plagues her life. Victoria experiences a miscarriage and is taken away, presumed to be insane. Before Fonny gets out, his father, caught stealing from his employer to raise money for his son's case, commits suicide.

This is undoubtedly a heavy book, but it's safe in Jenkins's deft hands and keen eyes. Now, we'll just be waiting for If Beale Street Could Talk to stir up some noise once Oscar nominations are announced.

The Confirmed Doctor Strange Sequel Is Almost Like a Spoiler For Avengers: Endgame

After months of wondering whether or not there would be a Doctor Strange sequel, we have pretty solid confirmation that it is, indeed, a thing. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel has finalized a deal with the director, and the search for a screenwriter is underway. Given the fact that the latest Marvel phase will end with the highly anticipated Avengers: Endgame in April 2019, the Doctor Strange sequel would effectively launch us into the fourth phase of the ever-expanding universe. This, of course, carries great weight when you consider the cliffhanger at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. Let's dig into the possible ramifications (and more sequel news!) ahead.

This year could certainly be categorized as "rough," which could explain why so many of us were so obsessed with nostalgia in 2018. From switching up our fashion choices to binge-watching '90s reboots, looking back a couple of decades was all the rage - and music videos reflected it, too.

Drake reunited the cast of Degrassi: The Next Generation for his "I'm Upset" video back in May, and Charli XCX and Troye Sivan brought it back to the golden age of my youth for "1999." But most recently, Ariana Grande took us all on a trip down memory lane when she paid homage to classic 2000s teen movies in the fun-filled visuals for "Thank U, Next." Ahead, see which artists turned back time in their videos this year.

OK, I Don't Think I'm Ready to Accept the Fact That These Songs Will Be 20 Years Old in 2019

We've had quite a few bops over the past few years, but nothing quite compares to '90s music. The decade blessed the masses with jams that made people fall in love, bust a move, and scratch our heads. For some reason, the 1990s still don't feel all that long ago. Maybe it's because I choose to be in denial about getting older, maybe time has simply flown - maybe, it's all of the above.

Regardless, the music during that era has maintained such prominence even now. You know good and well that Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle" still slaps, "I Want It That Way" by the Backstreet Boys is a bonafide classic, and when Juvenile's "Back That A** Up" comes on in the club, we're sprinting to the dance floor. So let's dance down memory lane, and look back at the musical masterpieces that are turning 20 next year.

The Crucial Role Captain Marvel Will Play in Avengers: Endgame

Now that we finally know the title of - and got our first glimpse at - the fourth Avengers film, we have so many questions about what to expect from Avengers: Endgame. After the devastating cliffhanger at the end of Infinity War, it seems like all hope is lost. But if you stayed for the end credits, you know that a new hero is on her way: Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers. Just before being dissolved by Thanos's snap, Nick Fury sends a distress call, and we caught a glimpse at Captain Marvel's logo on his device.

Before we get to Endgame, though, we'll have Captain Marvel, her standalone movie. Her movie is an origin story, set in 1995, so in the timeline of the MCU, it falls over a decade before the first Iron Man. The movie's connections to the current storyline, at least so far, are unknown.

According to IndieWire, that time jump might be crucial to Carol's position as the heroic calvary in Avengers: Endgame. "The focus now is on delivering Captain Marvel and then bringing Captain Marvel's story into the finale of everything we've started thus far," said Marvel president Kevin Feige. Carol's story, therefore, will somehow be a setup for the grand finale of Endgame.

Carol does appear, briefly, in the trailer for Endgame. The popular theory right now? That she, a space-force pilot and commander, will be crucial to rescuing Tony Stark from his seemingly fatal journey into outer space.

Marvel - and leading lady Brie Larson - have been pretty tight-lipped about the specifics, but given that her film is the last one before Endgame and that she was the last call for Nick Fury, it seems safe to say that Captain Marvel will help turn the tide at last when Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters on April 26, 2019.

Yippee Ki-Yay, Nine-Nine Fans - These Die Hard Trailers For Season 6 Are Simply Magnificent

If you weren't already excited about the season six premiere of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, these trailers will definitely do the trick. The NBC comedy, which originally aired on Fox, will return to the small screen on Jan. 10 courtesy of NBC, and the show has finally released a few trailers to get their fans excited. In them, Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) finally gets to live out his Die Hard fantasy as the cast reenacts the famous rooftop escape scene from the 1988 Christmas-action flick (don't @ me, it is a Christmas movie).

There's lots of dramatic phrasing, repelling off buildings, and a leap off a rooftop mid-explosion that would definitely not work in real life, so we don't recommend trying it at home. While the fantasy is the same in each video, they end on a different joke gag so both are definitely worth the watch. Check them out ahead and get ready for another season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine in the new year!

18 Female Characters Who Got Us Through 2018

This year was hard, wasn't it? We needed to take solace where we could. And for many of us here at POPSUGAR, that meant escaping the endlessly depressing, gut-wrenching, ever-harrowing news headlines by getting lost in some seriously great movies and TV shows, even just for a few moments. There's only so much a face mask can fix, you know? (Even a really, really good face mask.)

Fortunately 2018 had no shortage of diverse, hilarious, heartbreaking, and brilliantly written female characters to inspire us to keep pushing through the bullsh*t (of which there was a lot, thanks to the current political climate). Whether you sought comfort in the arms of Midge Maisel's arsenal of raunchy stand-up sets, or preferred to watch Shuri kick ass with her brains and fists, there's a good chance your favorite character is on our list ahead.

Which Netflix Original Series Reigned Supreme in 2018?

We can always depend on Netflix to come through with bingeworthy TV shows, and this year, we were blessed with even more series and seasons. Orange Is the New Black kept us on the edge of our seats, while House of Cards set on a new path in season six and the Queer Eye guys made us all cry happy tears in seasons one and two. Now it's time to cast your vote for the best Netflix original show of the year. We know it's difficult, but, hey, a decision has to be made. Get your votes in before the poll closes on Dec. 21 at 11:59 p.m. ET!

Victoria Beckham Couldn't Decide Between Pants and a Dress, So She Wore Both

Meghan Markle wasn't the only one to make a dramatic entrance in all black at the Fashion Awards on Monday night. Victoria Beckham also put in an appearance wearing her signature red carpet color, as she arrived at the ceremony accompanied by her husband, David Beckham, and their eldest son, Brooklyn. Naturally, the designer wore a look from her own label, choosing a style from her Spring 2019 collection that featured a crossover neckline. It may have looked like a gown at first glance (and it definitely resembled one from the back), but it was actually more than that: the look featured a long skirt that split from the hip to reveal a pair of pants underneath.

Victoria's really been playing about with the bottom half of her outfits recently. She wore a pair of floor-skimming red pants she called an "optical illusion," then sported leggings with stirrups over her boots rather than beneath them. This latest look is yet another example of how she's turning pants into a style statement whenever she can. Keep reading to see this glamorous look from all angles.

Meghan Markle's Black Gown Is So Stunning, These Pictures Should Hang in a Museum

Clare is the brilliant mind behind the famous royal's breathtaking wedding dress, so it's no surprise Meghan was given the honor of presenting her with the British designer of the year award. Meghan frequently gravitates toward Givenchy designs and chose a one-shoulder fitted gown for the awards. She paired the look with gold Tamara Mellon heels and Pippa Small jewelry, but her greatest accessory had to be the glow she gave off as she cradled her growing belly.
