This Is the Year I'm De-Stressing Like a Wellness Expert, Starting With These 13 Items

Here's how my New Year's resolutions usually go: I'm committed for a couple of weeks, and then life happens or I get tired and they fall by the wayside. So in 2019, I've resolved to focus on one giant theme and think of smaller, more attainable goals that I can pick up throughout the next 12 months, all in line with my theme of choice. This year's theme is self-care, and for me, that starts with de-stressing. I've gone through and taken inventory of the areas in my life I feel produce unnecessary anxiety, and here's how I'm working to feel more centered and less frazzled throughout 2019.

Can You Eat the Pain Away? Here's What Happened When I Followed an Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Training for a marathon has a lot of caveats. The biggest one, of course, is that you actually have to run 26.2 miles in the end. But you have to do a lot of other things, too. You have to take care of your body and specifically make time for things like foam rolling. You also have to be mindful about what you eat. With the Boston Marathon on my bucket list, I knew it was time to get my mind and body right. Triggered by a little bit of pain in my lower back (screw you, arthritis) and my left hip (ugh, Spin classes), I wondered if there was anything I could do differently with my diet to better my situation. And that's when a friend of mine recommended eating an anti-inflammatory diet.

An anti-inflammatory diet, you say? I wondered, and then I did my research. Essentially, an anti-inflammatory diet consists of the same healthy, unprocessed foods a lot of popular diets recommend, plus being mega attentive to nutrition labels, trying to avoid added, unnecessary sugar. The goal is eliminating foods known to trigger inflammation in the body. Although eating anti-inflammatory foods is definitely trendy, like Bulletproof Coffee or the Paleo diet, research definitely reveals its total-body benefits. Studies show that unresolved inflammation has been linked to the early development of chronic disease.

"There are many foods that can help to combat inflammation in the body," says Alissa Rumsey, M.S., R.D., owner of Alissa Rumsey Nutrition and Wellness. "A diet that includes plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, omega-3 fats, and antioxidants is your best defense against inflammation."

Building blocks. I could work with this, I thought. Rumsey gave me some more guidelines as to what specifically to hone in on, which seemed a lot like a Mediterranean diet. Think things like fatty fish, boatloads of fruits and vegetables, sweet potatoes, berries ("berries, especially, have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties due to the high content of anthocyanin, a powerful phytonutrient"), and tomatoes - for their high concentration of lycopene, which reduces inflammation. Also: whole grains, olive oil, and foods with unsaturated fats, like avocado and seeds. On the "DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT" list: large amounts of refined sugar, highly processed foods (see ya later, Friday pizza nights), and too much alcohol.

My task: stick to this clean way of eating for a week to see if I felt any all-over body shifts. Here are four lessons I learned from my week of eating an anti-inflammatory diet.

6 Expert Tips For a Faster Metabolism - They're Easy Enough to Start Today

One of the most common questions surrounding metabolism is how you can boost it. But before we share how you can increase your metabolism, you've got to first understand what it is and how it works.

A complex process, your metabolism relates to your body's ability to produce energy from fat, sugar, and protein and how it stores energy. The best way to determine your metabolic rate is to get a resting metabolic rate test at specialized clinics like the Mount Sinai PhysioLab. These tests typically cost around $250 and will provide you with the most accurate measurement.

If your results reveal that you have a slow metabolism, there are legit ways to boost your metabolism. Dori Arad, PhD, director of the Mount Sinai PhysioLab, and Holly Lofton, MD, director of the medical weight management program at NYU Langone Health, shared what really works. Spoiler alert: spicy foods and coffee didn't make the list.

If you're looking to speed up your metabolism, check out these experts' tips ahead.

Is Oat Milk Healthier Than Other Plant-Based Milks? 3 Dietitians Weigh In

If you're avoiding cow's milk because it's giving you issues with bloating, acne, or congestion (or because you're vegan), there's no shortage of plant-based milks to choose from. Almond and soy are probably the most popular, with pea protein milk on the rise, but what about oat milk? This milk alternative seems to be popping up all over supermarkets and in coffee shops. We asked three dietitians to weigh in on whether it's healthy and how it compares to other dairy-free milks.

Is Oat Milk Healthy?

In general, one cup of oat milk contains 130 calories, 2.5 grams total fat, zero grams saturated fat, two grams fiber, and four grams protein (brands will vary). It offers 35 percent of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for calcium and 25 percent RDA for vitamin D. Compared to other plant-based milks, oat milk has less protein than soy (90 calories, nine grams of protein) but more than almond (30 calories, one gram of protein). It's also higher in calories per serving.

One thing oat milk has over other dairy-free milks is that some brands are slightly higher in fiber, "which is good for digestion and heart health," Stephanie Ferrari, MS, RDN, of FRESH Communications, said. And because it's soluble fiber, it can help "reduce the absorption of cholesterol in your bloodstream," registered dietitians Stephanie Clarke, RD, and Willow Jarosh, RD, of C&J Nutrition, told POPSUGAR.

What About Taste?

"We think oat milk is a great option to add to the repertoire of dairy alternatives for people who can't or don't want to consume dairy," Stephanie and Willow said. "It has a rich, creamy texture, which makes it seem closer to cow's milk, in our opinions, and froths up really nicely in things like lattes; it's been sprouting up at lots more coffee shops this past year."

When you sip on unsweetened oat milk, you might notice that it tastes a little sweeter than other unsweetened dairy alternative milks. Stephanie and Willow thought that was strange, "since oats contain carbohydrate in the form of starch, but not as sugar." They discovered that some brands "convert some of the starch to sugar via an enzymatic process," which makes the oat milk taste creamier and sweeter. That explains why when you look at the nutritional info for unsweetened oat milk, you'll see that it still has 17 grams of added sugars. For comparison, unsweetened almond milk has zero.

Watch Out For Added Sugar and Gluten

"It's important for people to understand that many milk alternatives, like oat milk, might contain added sugar," Stephanie said. So be a label reader and make sure there's no sugar added. Silk Oat Yeah plain oat milk and Pacific Organic Oat Milk are great options since they're unsweetened.

Stephanie added that if you're gluten-free, "make sure the oat milk is made with certified gluten-free oats. Oats are naturally gluten-free, but cross contamination can happen during processing." Some gluten-free brands are Oatly and Califia Farms Toasted Oats N' Almond Almondmilk.

You Can Make It at Home!

"Oat milk is super easy to make at home and affordable," Willow and Stephanie said. You can use organic oats if you're worried about pesticides, and go for gluten-free oats if you need to. You basically just add one cup of rolled oats and four cups of water to a high-speed blender, puree, strain, and enjoy! You can add a little vanilla extract, cinnamon, and a few dates to the blender for natural sweetness. Or add cocoa powder if you want chocolate oat milk. Yes, please!

Walmart Has 45-Calorie Egg White Wraps, and Breakfast Burritos Will Never Be the Same

Say goodbye to regular ol' wraps, because a new trend is sweeping the fitness space. Low-carb alternatives like wraps made entirely of cheese are becoming more popular, and Walmart's egg white wraps are officially in the mix. Made by Crepini, the Egg White Thins can replace tortillas and sandwich wraps for lunch roll-ups, breakfast tacos, or quesadillas. Each one has just 45 calories and four grams of carbs, and there's a little bit of protein, too (four grams).

For keto dieters, be sure to check your macros before eating these particular wraps; they are low-carb, but they do contain a flour mixture added to the egg whites. The regular Egg White Thins are made with wheat flour, and there's a gluten-free version made with a combination of brown rice, sorghum, and millet flours. In addition to the plain wraps, Crepini has frozen egg white thins that are already rolled and stuffed with various ingredients like spinach and feta and four cheeses with marinara and basil. Yum!

There are clearly already a lot of fans of these creative slivers, and people are proving just how versatile they are. Check out all the Crepini options ahead, and look out for them on your next trip to Walmart.

Lose Weight and Boost Your Metabolism by Eating More Protein - Here's What You Need to Know

Whether you realized it or not, what you eat on a daily basis not only affects how you feel (groggy versus energized), but it also impacts important bodily processes, like your metabolism. We like to make things easy to digest, but your metabolism is an extremely complex process that relates to your body's ability to process energy from fat, sugar, protein, and how it stores that energy.

We've already explained how carbohydrates affect your metabolism - hint: there's no need to go low-carb. In order to find out how protein, another macronutrient, affects your metabolism, POPSUGAR spoke with Avigdor Arad, PhD, RDN, CDE, director of the Mount Sinai Physiolab.

Does Eating More Protein Boost My Metabolism?

First, Dr. Arad reminded us that when people talk about their metabolisms, they're referring to their resting metabolic rate: the amount of energy or calories your body needs at rest (before physical activity and eating) to perform basic functions that keep you alive, like breathing. When it comes to our macronutrient profile, how much sugar or carbohydrates, fat, and protein we consume plays an important role in our metabolic rate.

"If you're not getting a sufficient amount of protein and you're getting too much sugar (carbohydrates) . . . then you're going to end up not expending a lot of calories," Dr. Arad told POPSUGAR. This is because foods high in sugar, such as a candy bar or even a banana, have a relatively low thermic effect - it doesn't take much energy for your body to process them. As a result, your body is going to hold onto those calories and store them as fat instead of burning them. According to Dr. Arad, "If you follow a diet that doesn't have enough protein and has too much sugar and fat, it's certainly going to affect your metabolic rate."

Conversely, Dr. Arad explained that eating adequate amounts of protein is "much more difficult for the body to process, and the body burns more calories doing so." Dr. Arad also explained that this is why most weight-loss programs recommend increasing your protein intake, because it will keep you fuller longer, and you'll be burning more calories with a greater protein consumption. Bottom line: eating more protein can boost your metabolism because it has a higher thermic effect, meaning your body is going to have to work harder to digest, break down, and store it.

Before you go and meal prep a bunch of high-protein meals, there's an important caveat you need to know. "You cannot eat too much protein because it could be toxic to your kidneys," Dr. Arad explained. On average, you should eat 0.5-0.8 grams per pound of body weight. This translates to approximately 30 percent of your total energy intake, Dr. Arad said.

Other Ways to Boost Your Metabolism

Eating an adequate amount of protein is an important part of the metabolism-boosting equation, and there are a few other expert-approved tips you should follow to improve your metabolic rate. First, decrease the amount of sugar you're consuming. As Dr. Arad mentioned, sugar requires minimal energy for your body to process, and if you aren't very active, those calories will be stored as fat. Second, eat more healthy fats. Similar to protein, fats are more difficult for your body to process.

Finally, increase your physical activity by doing workouts such as strength training. The goal is to build muscle because muscle is more metabolically active than fat, aka it requires more energy, and the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolic rate. Here's a four-week strength training plan to get you started.

This Couple Adopted a 33-Pound Cat With Thumbs - and He’s So Dang Cute It Hurts

When Bronson the cat met his new owners, Mike and Megan, he weighed 33 pounds and was in their local Humane Society shelter because his previous owner had passed away. Because Mike and Megan were drawn to Bronson immediately and fell in love with him just as quickly, they were committed to adopting Bronson to help him get healthy. Nearly nine months later, Bronson is well on his way to hitting his goals.

"When we adopted him, they asked us to wait on switching his food because of the stress of moving into his new home," Mike told POPSUGAR. "For the first couple of months, his weight loss was minimal because of needing to wean him off of his kibble and onto his grain-free, meat-based wet food diet. We took him into his vet right after we brought him home and had they gave us an exact number of calories to give him daily. It's been a bit tricky keeping track of his calories, because we have three other cats that are used to sharing food. Since we brought him home, he's lost a total of 5.4 pounds and we're really hoping things continue in this direction."

Since adopting Bronson - who happens to be a polydactyl cat, meaning he has pronounced thumbs in addition to his paws! - Mike and Megan have been sharing his progress on his Instagram account, @iambronsoncat. "Bronson's accumulated a large following, and they are amazingly supportive, give us advice, share their stories, and cheer him on. We really want to use the account to help raise awareness to feline obesity and the importance of a proper diet."

See some photos of Bronson below, from the early days after his adoption to now!

Ariana Grande's New Pokémon Tattoo May Be a Subtle Tribute to Mac Miller

Ariana Grande gave her ever-growing tattoo collection a nostalgic upgrade this weekend. On Jan. 13, the singer, songwriter, and music video extraordinaire shared an Instagram Stories snap to show off some brand-new ink on her inner arm: a Pokémon character known as Eevee.

"I've wanted this for so long. thank u sm," Grande captioned the photo while tagging Los Angeles-based tattoo artist Kane Navasard. Grande unveiled the tattoo just a few hours after admitting that she played a Pokémon game on her Nintendo Switch for nearly an entire day. "Honestly. yesterday i had a day off and i played pokémon let's go eevee for fifteen hours. honestly," she tweeted.

Sure, Grande's fresh ink is undeniably adorable, but we have a feeling there's a deeper meaning behind her tattoo choice. A bushy-tailed, furry-collared Pokémon character, Eevee is known for its ability to adapt and evolve based on its surroundings. If that doesn't describe Grande to a T after the whirlwind of a year she dealt with in 2018, we're not sure what does.

On top of that, back in October 2016, Grande and her then-boyfriend Mac Miller dressed as Eevee and Pikachu, respectively, for Halloween. Is it possible her new tattoo is a tribute of sorts to her late ex and their mutual love for Pokémon? It very well could be, considering the fact that she recently transformed the Pete Davidson tattoo on her foot into a sweet shout-out to Miller's dog, Myron.

These YSL Plumping Lip Balms Are Such a Cute Galentine's Day Gift

If you prefer to celebrate "Ovaries Before Brovaries" a la Leslie Knope, you're probably looking for something special to give your best gals on Galentine's Day. Aren't your true loves your best friends, anyway? Perhaps YSL had "Uteruses Before Duderuses" in mind when creating the perfectly packaged and newly launched Volupté Plump-in-Color Lip Balm ($39), a lip balm filled with plumping and moisturizing ingredients like peppermint oil, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acid.

If you like the decadence of applying a lipstick from an opulent tube but prefer a softer, more hydrating finish that builds color with application, these do the trick. The balms come in six shades: Mad Nude (a pale nude-pink), Dazzling Fuchsia (a hot pink), Exposing Coral (a pinky-orange), Delirious Orange (a coral), Lunatic Red (a scarlet hue that can be used as a bold pop of color or a slight tint), and Furious Gold (a golden shade that enhances your lips' natural color).

The balms are beautiful and include the signature YSL motif that are standard in the brand's lip products. It should be noted that the plumping effect doesn't make your lips feel like they're on fire, like many tingling lip products can. Instead, it creates a perfectly flushed, fuller effect and a high-shine finish, thanks to the black pearl powder.

It's luxe, can be used everyday, and is really quite adorable. It's the perfect gift for the lady loves of your life - or anyone else who understands you don't need someone to kiss in order for your lips to look kissable.

I Need to Brag About the Face Oil That's Given Me the Glowiest Skin I've Ever Had

For my 26th birthday, I treated myself to a facial oil. It seemed like the one "grown-up" step in my skincare routine I hadn't devoted any time to, and I was seeing face oils everywhere. With promises to hydrate, fade discoloration, brighten, and tighten, the seemingly endless number of options to choose from intimidated me. I decided to splurge on one product in particular I'd been eyeing for months: the Mara Beauty Universal Face Oil ($72).

If you haven't heard of the Mara brand before, it launched in early 2018 by Allison McNamara, editorial director of Mane Addicts and former POPSUGAR video host (in fact, following her on Instagram is how I found out about her new venture and her first product, the oil).

After four months of using the Universal Face Oil morning and night, it's safe to say I'm obsessed. It's become an integral part of my routine, and I use it in place of moisturizer for incredibly hydrated skin that gives off a visible glow. It's fantastic under makeup and on its own at night. Thanks to the TSA-friendly size (1.18 ounces), the oil has also become an in-flight essential for me. When I travel, I avoid makeup and put a thick layer of this on my skin to combat dryness and breakouts.

I'm glad I discovered this product for a lot of reasons. First and foremost, this oil is clean and nontoxic. That means it's made without fragrance, parabens, added color, phthalates, PEGs, mineral oil, or anything synthetic, and it's cruelty-free. Through trial and error over the last couple years, I've learned that my skin is sensitive to a lot of ingredients, and if I was going to invest in a facial oil, I wanted it to be free of any "bad" ingredients that could cause irritation. Knowing that McNamara is extremely serious about her own clean beauty routine, I trusted her list of carefully sourced ingredients.

Smoothing this all over your face is like giving your dry skin the most thirst-quenching drink of its life.

Never mind what's not in this oil - let's talk about what is. Moringa is a superfood that is loaded with nutrients, antioxidants, and vitamins A, B, C, D, and E. It has more vitamin C than oranges, I was told when I bought the oil at Credo Beauty. A blend of plankton extract and algae is packed with fatty acids that plump and hydrate dull skin. Smoothing this all over your face is like giving your dry skin the most thirst-quenching drink of its life.

I'm not exaggerating when I say you can "sea the glow" - get it? - from, like, feet away. I've gotten so many compliments on my skin, and while I still have some stubborn acne marks to work on, I can confidently say this has helped to prevent breakouts and improve the texture of my skin. Don't believe me? Try not to be blinded by the photos ahead.

The Genius Way Julia Roberts Repurposed Last Week's Manicure For the Critics’ Choice Awards

Julia Roberts knows her way around nail trends and how to clapback at haters who diss on her manicures, but she also knows how to revamp a look from one red carpet to another.

Always on trend, Roberts's gold manicure from the Golden Globes was transformed into an edgy, angled french manicure for the Critics' Choice Awards, thanks to a swipe of black polish over the top of the gold base. Genius.

The manicure was created by Mazz Hanna, the talent behind many of Roberts's nail designs, who explained, "The geometric shapes of Julia's dress inspired this new shape, we wanted to keep everything simple and minimal, but with an edgy flair." So here's (red carpet approved) proof that there's no need to start a new mani from scratch when you can just add to the base.

There's 1 Trendy Hair Accessory the Royals Can't Get Enough of (and Neither Can We)

Headbands definitely had a moment in 2018, and if the royals (oh, and Chrissy Teigen) have anything to do with it, they aren't disappearing anytime soon.

The style isn't only pretty, but it's also practical. It keeps hair off the face (which is perfect considering some royals are prone to hair touching) and looks elegant for royal engagements and celebratory occasions. From velvet to floral to beaded, they have tried them all.

Read on to see the best royal headband moments so far, but be forewarned: they might tempt you to dig out your old-school versions and maybe even invest in some new ones.

Got Freckles? Here's How 3 Makeup Artists Say You Should Apply Foundation

"Who tried drawing on freckles with eye pencil in 2018?" makeup artist Hannah Martin asked me. I know I definitely dotted an eyebrow pencil over the bridge of my nose on occasion, and I know I'm not alone. Some might call it the Meghan Markle effect, or maybe we're finally starting to embrace our natural beauty more; whatever the reason, freckles are on trend right now. However, it's not always easy to apply foundation if you still want your freckles to show through. If you find yourself in this particular predicament, fear not.

Three celebrity makeup artists shared their advice on everything you need to know about wearing foundation with freckles, as well as a few tips on how to create faux ones for those who don't have any naturally. Read on for the best tips, and get ready to embrace, or enhance, what your mama gave you.

Meghan Markle's New Outfit Is Drawing Comparisons to Princess Diana, Because, Well, Look at Her

Pairing red and purple together is the kind of style move you don't forget, but Meghan Markle's take on the color combo is memorable for another reason. When the duchess of Sussex stepped out on Monday in a bright Aritzia Maxwell by Babaton dress and cherry red Sentaler coat, she made us think, could it be a tribute to Princess Diana? Long before Meghan, Diana showed off the more unconventional color combo on three separate occasions (that we have the photos of): a trip to India in 1992, a trip to Hong Kong in 1989, and on tour in Bangkok in 1988.

So, when Meghan emerged wearing the same shades of purple and red, we instantly saw a bit of Diana in her look. The polished separates were mixed and matched to create the same effect: bold with sophistication. And, even while a couple of Diana's looks and Meghan's fall near Valentine's Day on the calendar, none of these outfits could ever be called cheesy. They're done with just the right proportions, making the outfits feel easy, never fussy. It's a way both women have with clothes, no matter what they're wearing.

Rihanna's Travel Outfit Looks So Modern Until You Lay Eyes on Her Nostalgic Boots

If you're still wondering if UGGs are socially acceptable again, Rihanna continues to provide answers. After previously wearing the nostalgic brand's classic chestnut boots at New York's JFK Airport in February 2018, the singer and entrepreneur was recently spotted wearing the same exact pair - at the same airport, no less! Rihanna paired the cozy-as-hell boots with oversize everything - sunglasses, coat, hoodie, and Dior tote bag.

Though UGG hasn't been able to attain the same ubiquity it experienced in the '00s, celebrities including Zendaya and Selena Gomez have embraced the brand again. An insane thigh-high iteration of UGG boots even appeared on the runway last year as part of a
collaboration between the brand and Y/Project. So, if they're good enough for the runway and Rihanna . . .

Ciara Knows That Her Orange One-Piece Is a Whole Lot Sexier From the Side

Leave it to Ciara to bring some heat to even the coldest of Winter days. The "Level Up" singer posed in a barely there swimsuit that came in a vibrant tangerine hue. While her bathing suit may look like a bikini at first, it turns out she was actually wearing a one-piece that had multiple side cutouts. Donald Trump Welcomes the Clemson Tigers With a Buffet of Fast Food at the White House

The Clemson Tigers won the national college football championship on Jan. 7, and the White House hosted them to celebrate on Jan. 14. To mark the occasion, the president and White House staff set up a candlelit dinner with silver platters of . . . fast food. Silver platters of fast food. Fast foo - am I in the twilight zone? Sadly, I am not. The dinner for the national champs was an array of Big Macs, McDonald's chicken nuggets and dipping sauces, and items from Wendy's and Burger King; "Great American food," as Trump put it.

"I like it all. I like it all. It's all good stuff, great American food. And it's going to be very interesting to see at the end of this evening how many are left," POTUS said. When he spoke earlier in the day about his plans for the fast-food feast, he said, "I would think that's their favorite food."

Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders weighed in on the decision, saying a lot of the White House staff is furloughed (and not getting paid) during the ongoing government shutdown, and that Trump gave of his own bounty in providing the meal. "Much of the residence staff at the White House is furloughed," Sanders said, "so the president is personally paying for the event to be catered with some of everyone's favorite fast foods."

It's no secret that fast food is a big part of Trump's diet, but to serve it at a celebratory dinner for a big group of world-class athletes? Interesting choice. See more photos and reactions to this gourmet feast ahead.

If This Underwater Villa in the Maldives Isn't on Your Bucket List, You're Doing It Wrong

Still piecing together your 2019 travel bucket list? Then boy oh boy, do we have a worthy addition for you. The Conrad Maldives Rangali Island hotel finally opened its highly anticipated underwater villa at the end of 2018, and it's just as breathtaking as you'd imagine.

Dubbed the Muraka (which translates to "coral" in the local Maldivian language), the submerged suite features two levels and can sleep a total of nine people. The above-water portion houses a bedroom and bathroom with panoramic windows, an outer deck with an infinity pool, a kitchen, and a dining area. Meanwhile, 16 feet directly below, the underwater level boasts a king-sized bed, living area, and bathroom with up-close-and-personal views of coral and fish living in the Indian Ocean. *Cue "Under the Sea" from The Little Mermaid*

Of course, an extravagant accommodation like this calls for quite the steep price tag. One night's stay in the Muraka suite will cost you about $50,000. If you're ballin' on a budget but still want to live our your Princess Ariel dreams, we suggest checking out the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island's Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, which offers visitors a dining experience like no other.

Keep reading to admire the bi-level Muraka suite in all its one-of-a-kind glory. Now, who's down to lend me $50,000?

I've Been on 67 Solo Flights With My Toddler - Here's What I've Learned

The first time I flew with my daughter, Lucy, was when she was 4 months old, and it was a four-hour direct flight from New York City to Denver. I was so panicked from the endless parenting threads on Facebook about airport disasters, mean flight attendants, and packing lists that I decided to do a dry run the day before. For four hours, I sat in the corner of my local coffee shop with Lucy hanging out on my lap. And you know what? Nothing happened.

And nothing happened on that first plane ride, either. As a single mom, I was always the only one traveling with her, and I always had her in my lap. Children are free (with the exception of taxes for international flights) as lap infants until their second birthday, and I wanted to maximize our savings while we could.

At 3 1/2, my daughter has now been on 63 flights. That's counting connections and puddle-hoppers and international and domestic trips. And even when it's stressful, I remind myself how lucky I am to be traveling with my favorite plus-one. Some perspective: the worst flight I ever took was when I was in my 20s, hungover and sad from a breakup and sure I was going to throw up. Even a flight with a cranky toddler I love is a million times better than that sad, nausea-inducing flight - and I try to remember that whenever we hit a rough patch.

I know that my daughter represents a grand sample size of one. But I also know how scared I was before that first flight and wish there had been words of encouragement in the midst of all the praying emoji on those Facebook groups. Here's what I've learned.

  • Altitude isn't some sort of attitude changer. In general, I think how infants behave on land is how they behave in the air. Sure, there are air pressure changes, which can cause discomfort (which can be minimized by breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or sucking on a pacifier), but in general, kids don't go through some profound personality change just because they're at 45,000 feet.
  • You don't need a seat for your child. Sure, it's nice to have. But you truly can sit for seven or eight hours with a 30-pound child sprawled on your lap. Use each other as pillows!
  • You need two extra changes of clothes for them . . . and for you. Feeling poop leak onto your jeans and being powerless to stop it because the seat belt sign is lit is a million times worse when you know there are no clean jeans in your future.
  • You don't need a ton of toys. On one trip from New York to California when my daughter was about 1 1/2, I had been in such a hurry that I hadn't packed any toys. We had a mini stuffed pony, a toothbrush, and some stickers. Was it the best flight ever? No. Did we make it where we needed to be? Sure did.
  • You don't need to give presents to your seatmates. I don't believe in goody bags to apologize for an infant on board. I do believe in a friendly smile, an introduction, and recognizing we are all just trying to get from point A to point B.
  • Try to have fun in the terminal. You're going somewhere! It's an adventure! I grab food, let my daughter pick a treat at the news kiosk, and just generally de-stress and walk around. When my daughter was crawling, I tried not to worry about germs as she crawled around the gate. My philosophy: the more tired they are at the gate, the more tired they'll be on the plane.
  • It's OK to judiciously play the kid card. Sometimes, having a kid with you works better than Global Entry. In general, I've found that asking for what you need politely and respectfully can help you get it - including allowing you to a skip a line.

Finally, and I think this is the biggest thing I'm still learning: your experience is different than your child's experience. You might be stressed about flight delays and gate changes, but they could be totally chill. For example, when my daughter and I were waiting for an endlessly delayed flight from Budapest to London, I was checking my watch, trying to assess how many hours we would have to sleep when and if we ever got to our hotel. She had found a little girl about the same age as her and had begun happily playing with her Peppa Pig figurines. For her, a delay was fun. I'm not quite there yet, but I'm trying to find that perspective.

It's not all sunshine, rainbows, and clear skies. Some flights will become family legend. But I think the best thing to aim for is an unremarkable trip. But you don't need the gear, the note cards, or the precision-level planning to have an amazing trip with your child. Just enjoy the ride.

This iPhone Keyboard Feature Makes Typing With 1 Hand a Piece of Cake

In today's edition of "Things I Didn't Know Until 10 Minutes Ago," yet another iPhone hack that makes me question everything I've ever known about technology has been unearthed. As someone who regularly finds herself with only one free hand, I was thrilled to stumble across this simple trick that makes one-handed typing 10 times easier.

As highlighted by Twitter user @thatoneperra, iPhones have a feature that allows users to shift the keyboard to one side of the screen to make one-handed typing less difficult. The user tweeted about the hack back in November with a video demonstrating how it works: you simply hold the emoji key on your keyboard before shifting the entire keyboard to the left or right, depending on which hand you're typing with. Not only does the feature help people with limited mobility, but it's also great for those who run into the problems that come with having a large iPhone and small hands.

The feature was obviously news to me, but iPhones have actually included the keyboard-shift capability since 2017. Better to be late to the party than to never show up, right? Get a quick look at how the trick works in the video above.
