Surviving R. Kelly Creators Send Powerful Message at MTV Awards: "The World Is Listening Now"
Amid all the amazing performances and inspiring speeches at the MTV Movie & TV Awards on Monday night, one particular win gave us the most poignant speech of the entire award show.
Surviving R. Kelly, the Lifetime docuseries that shook the musical world by exposing the multiple sexual abuse allegations against Kelly, took home the Golden Popcorn for best documentary and beat out several other documentaries - including At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal, RBJ, Minding the Gap, and McQueen. Brie Miranda Bryant (senior vice president of unscripted development and programming for Lifetime) accepted the award surrounded by several of Kelly's survivors and moved the audience to tears with an incredibly powerful speech.
"This isn't just a trophy to us. It speaks to the cultural impact that it generated from this documentary," Bryant said. "Survivors walked through the fire and stood again to tell the story . . . journalists, activists, bloggers, tweeters who continued to say the name of these survivors, these parents, helped to tell this story . . . thank you, especially to those individuals who never wavered despite how daunting this journey has been."

If you're an honorary Monterey resident like us, then you're probably just as addicted to the second season of Big Little Lies as we are. Those of you who need to be in the loop are no doubt tuning in every week to watch the next episode. However, for those of you without an HBO subscription who are dying to watch, we have some bad news: BLL is unfortunately not - and never will be - available to stream on Netflix.
Why, you ask? The answer is simpler than you think, and it's the same answer for why you'll never find Game of Thrones or your other favorite HBO shows on Netflix. As much as we wish that we could stream all of our favorite shows on one platform, there's a reason so many streaming services exist: they all have different content, and they're not looking to share. HBO offers a lot less programming than Netflix, therefore making its original content even more precious and necessary to monopolize. After all, how else would it get subscribers to pay $14.99 a month for HBO Now?
According to AT&T's new head of HBO, Bob Greenblatt, who took the position back in March, HBO plans to release "150 hours of original programming" this year in the hopes of giving Netflix some competition. Though Greenblatt admits that with all of the streaming services out there - such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Vudu, and Disney's forthcoming service - the field is crowded, but he believes HBO can more than hold its own. GOT may have aired its final season, but unless you never want to see an episode of BLL (or Chernobyl, or Westworld, or Euphoria . . . ) again, don't you dare cancel that HBO subscription.

It seems like the British royals are always arriving at one ceremonial event or another. Every June, though, there's one particularly important ceremony that has a rich, centuries-long tradition behind it. If you've never heard of Garter Day, here's what to know.
Garter Day is the day each year when members of the Order of the Garter gather at Windsor Castle for an annual meeting. In years where new members are being brought into the order, this day also marks the occasion of their official investiture ceremony. It is a very formal occasion, at which the members of the Order wear their elaborate ceremonial robes and insignia. Spouses of the Knight Companions and Lady Companions are in attendance at Garter Day as well. According to the official royal website, the day follows a set order of business.
"The day begins with The Queen formally investing any new Companions with the Order's insignia in the Throne Room of the Castle. The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh entertain the members and officers at a lunch, and then all process on foot to a service in St. George's Chapel. There is a short service where any new Companions are installed. The Sovereign and other members of the Order then return to the Upper Ward of the castle in carriages and cars."
The Order of the Garter is one of the oldest and highest honors in England, including both royalty and commoners who are honored for their public service. The official royal Instagram account shared a little more information about the historical and mythological origins of the order.
"The Garter Day tradition dates back over 700 years when, in medieval times, King Edward III was inspired by tales of King Arthur and the chivalry of the Knights of the Round Table that he set up his own group of honourable knights, called the Order of the Garter. The Knights are chosen from a variety of backgrounds, in recognition for public service. Today, the Order includes the Queen, who is Sovereign of the Garter, several senior Members of the Royal Family including the Prince of Wales and Duke of Cambridge, and twenty-four knights chosen in recognition of their work."
Membership in the Order of the Garter is a lifelong honor, and there is a limit to how many "Companions" there can be: only 24 people can be in the Order at any given time. New Companions are named when there are openings. This year, a new Lady Companion and a Knight Companion were welcomed in: athlete Lady Mary Peters and the Marquess of Salisbury, a former Chairman of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Foundation.
Despite this limit of 24 members at a time, there is also such thing as a "Supernumerary Knight of the Garter," which permits the queen to honor people - typically members of the royal family or foreign monarchs - with honorary membership without taking up one of the limited spots. At the 2019 ceremony, for instance, King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and King Felipe of Spain were both invested as Supernumerary Knights of the Garter. It's another instance of British pride in their history and long-standing traditions.

Many adults would break under the pressure Simon Cowell put on 12-year-old Ansley Burns during her America's Got Talent audition, but she took his challenge in stride. The South Carolina native put her vocal chops on display for judges Cowell, Julianne Hough, Gabrielle Union, and Howie Mandel in a preview for Tuesday's episode, but things took an unexpected turn halfway through her rendition of Aretha Franklin's "Think."
"I don't think this backing track was working for you," Cowell said, after stopping her mid-audition. He admitted that the poor track made it hard for him to judge her fairly. "I'm just wondering if we should do a verse and a chorus, maybe a capella?"
The preteen looked momentarily caught off guard by the request, but after a sip of water, she stepped up to the plate. Watch Burns's full performance above to see how she fared without her music. Spoiler: She may have earned a thumbs-up from the hard-to-please Cowell.

Warning! The Burning Passion Between These High School Sweethearts Is Straight-Up Scorching
Photographer Amber Koelling has always loved capturing raw, passionate moments between couples. So she utilized her skills and orchestrated this breathtaking photo shoot at the Fugitive Beach in Rolla, MO. The location is absolutely gorgeous, and most of the photos were taken on a man-made rock quarry turned cove with beautiful sparkling water.
To top things off, Amber's models, Spencer and Madison, are actually a real-life couple! They are high school sweethearts after meeting by chance at a New Year's Eve party during their senior year. Their romance and chemistry is palpable in this photo shoot. "I did not think he would want to strip his shirt off and take pictures with me, but as hesitant as he was, he did! And he loved it, he loves how they turned out and how different the experience was to him," Madison said about the experience of working with her boyfriend. "I absolutely had a blast just goofing off with the guy I love and acting like I'm photogenic for awhile."
Spencer and Madison definitely brought the heat to this shoot to fulfill Amber's vision. Spencer wore a white shirt and black pants and Madison wore a gorgeous gown that featured a shimmery bodysuit that was an absolute showstopper. "We risked the dress's life by submerging it in water and having our model lay in the sand, but found it 100 percent worth it," Amber said. So she utilized her skills and orchestrated this breathtaking photo shoot at the Fugitive Beach in Rolla, MO. The location is absolutely gorgeous, and most of the photos were taken on a man-made rock quarry turned cove with beautiful sparkling water.
To top things off, Amber's models, Spencer and Madison, are actually a real-life couple! They are high school sweethearts after meeting by chance at a New Year's Eve party during their senior year. Their romance and chemistry is palpable in this photo shoot. "I did not think he would want to strip his shirt off and take pictures with me, but as hesitant as he was, he did! And he loved it, he loves how they turned out and how different the experience was to him," Madison said about the experience of working with her boyfriend. "I absolutely had a blast just goofing off with the guy I love and acting like I'm photogenic for awhile."
Spencer and Madison definitely brought the heat to this shoot to fulfill Amber's vision. Spencer wore a white shirt and black pants and Madison wore a gorgeous gown that featured a shimmery bodysuit that was an absolute showstopper. "We risked the dress's life by submerging it in water and having our model lay in the sand, but found it 100 percent worth it," Amber said. It's the Most Terrifying Time of the Year: Blumhouse Is Rebooting Black Christmas
Ho ho ho, merry nightmares! Scary movie powerhouse production company Blumhouse is venturing into holiday horror with a reboot of Black Christmas, which is likely the best gift horror movie fans could ask for come Dec. 13 (which falls on a Friday, naturally).
Blumhouse recently dusted off the classic slasher Halloween with 2018's stellar remake and has a modern-day take on The Craft on the way with writer/director Zoe Lister-Jones attached, so seeing another reboot on its list makes sense. Though, technically, the 2019 edition of the film is a reboot of a reboot, since the 1974 original was already updated in 2006 for a version starring Katie Cassidy, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Oliver Hudson.
Either way, the core story remains essentially the same: a group of sorority girls are picked off one by one by a murderer in the days leading up to Christmas. In the 2006 film, the killer is an escaped maniac whose childhood home happened to be the sorority house, whereas in the original, it's an anonymous, deranged stalker hanging out in their attic.
Sophia Takal, who directed the 2016 thriller Always Shine and Blumhouse's Into the Dark episode "New Year, New You," is attached to helm the feature, as well as cowrite the script with writer April Wolfe. As far as the cast is concerned, Imogen Poots will star alongside Aleyse Shannon, Brittany O'Grady, and Caleb Eberhardt. So, needless to say, we can't freakin' wait for this. To kill time until December rolls around, we'll just have to watch Krampus, or something.
