A Dietitian Explains Why Meal Prepping Snacks Is So Essential - Plus, 5 Healthy Favorites

Meal prep isn't just a huge cost-saver, it can free up loads of time, too. (After all, who wants to cook every night?) And whether or not you've already gotten into the routine of strategizing your meals for the week ahead, you're likely not meal prepping your snacks yet - and you should be.

"Meal prepping snacks helps you not overeat or end up famished by mealtime, causing you to eat more than you normally would," Colleen Christensen, RDN, told POPSUGAR. "By having snacks at the ready, you're preventing yourself from getting overly hungry while nourishing your body with foods that feel good." The best part? Making snacks ahead of time is just as easy as prepping a week's worth of meals - even easier because you can make one or two snacks to recycle throughout the week. This Dad's "Hello (From the Inside)" Adele Parody Has Me Chuckling in My Blanket Cocoon

As we all do our part to decrease the spread of COVID-19 by social distancing and sheltering in place, singer and former The Voice contestant Chris Mann put together a hilarious parody of Adele's hit song "Hello" that has me snorting with delight from inside the hoodie I've been wearing for two weeks straight. "Hello from corona life! I've FaceTime called 1,000 times," Chris sings in the hook of the song. "There's social distance between us, and I'm freaking out! . . . What's the point of putting on pants anyhow?"

The video shows Chris longingly staring out of his window, waving at neighbors from afar, and lamenting the fact that he can't order a box of his friends to be delivered to his front doorstep. "Is there something else to watch besides the news and Finding Dory?" the dad adds, as the camera pans to his son watching the film (probably on an infinite loop). See the full spoof here and prepare to sing along to these super-relatable lyrics.

Fried rice tastes best when made from leftover, day-old steamed rice (rather than freshly cooked).

Ingredients

  1. 1 tablespoon sunflower oil
4 ounces boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into 1-inch chunks
    Salt, to taste
    Pepper, to taste
2 tablespoons garlic butter, plus more to taste

    1 cup onions, diced
    1/4 cup carrots, diced

    2 cups cooked white rice
    2 tablespoons soy sauce
    2 tablespoons sesame seeds

Directions

  1. Add the safflower oil to a skillet and set over medium heat. Meanwhile, season the chicken with salt and pepper. Cook the chicken (stirring occasionally) until lightly-browned, firm, and opaque throughout. Add the garlic butter and stir to coat the chicken. Set aside.
  2. Using the same pan, cook the onions, carrots and green onions until softened. Set aside.
  3. Wipe out the pan, then scramble the eggs (season the raw egg with salt and pepper to taste). Add the rice, soy sauce, sesame seeds, chicken, onions, carrots and green onion to the pan and cook until the rice is warm and browned. Serve hot.

Experts Explain Why There's No Single Workout That's Most Effective For Relieving Stress

Feeling frazzled? Overwhelmed? Panicked? Drowning in anxiety? Trust me, you're not alone.

We know that exercise can relieve stress and support mental health, but is there a particular kind of exercise that's best? It depends on who you ask - and the way your body and brain work. If you were to ask my therapist, he'd say yoga. Ask a SoulCycle devotee, and they'd say Spin is their personal Xanax. And according to experts POPSUGAR consulted, neither of those options are incorrect.

"There is no wrong answer as to what kind of movement is best for stress relief," said Nicolette Amarillas, a San Francisco-based postural specialist and strength coach. "But I find it helpful to do this: ask yourself, what does my body want right now? Really ask, and most of all, really listen." She went on to explain that "our mental stress is expressed physically in the body, and this is why movement is vital to our mental health."

So consider - does yoga sound really good to you right now, or are you craving a run? Does boxing take your mind off everything, or do you want to focus on your breath and core with Pilates? What is your body telling you? The workout that brings you joy is likely the one that will relieve stress.

"So many times we let our minds make the decision when it'd be best to actually let the body tell us what it needs," Amarillas said. "Your body is always working for you, working to keep you healthy, and if you let it tell you what it needs, instead of forcing it to do what you think it needs, it will in turn work more efficiently at managing things like stress." (It's a good reminder to forget what you "should" do, and instead do what feels right for you.)

This doesn't necessarily mean you need to do a traditional workout. "Everyone is different, but often times I find that my body wants something simple like a walking meditation - time outside with no technology and no destination in mind," said Amarillas.

Liz Letchford, PhD-C, ATC, founder of The Release, agreed that there's no single workout to relieve stress, but Letchford did have some tips based on where you're at on the stress scale. Chiefly, if stress is particularly crippling, you may want to scale back on the bootcamps and Tabata. "If you notice that you're having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, if you wake up not feeling refreshed, if you're having trouble eating - if you're at that level of stress - cardio or HIIT is not going to be the best option for you," she told POPSUGAR. (The combination of extreme psychological stress and physical stress from cardio might be bad for your body.) Instead, she recommends opting for something low-key and low-impact, like yoga.

"If you're really, really stressed, you might be what we call 'sympathetically dominant,'" said Letchford, referencing the sympathetic nervous system, which dictates your fight-or-flight response. Essentially, your stress response is throwing a (very anxious) party in your nervous system. "Those HIIT and bootcamp classes fuel that sympathetic nervous system, when what you need is to downregulate and tap into your de-stress response by activating the parasympathetic nervous system," she said.

If you're feeling general stress in your body and you're not completely overwhelmed, Letchford says to try strength training. It can still be low-impact, and you'll be giving your body a clinically-backed tool to improve your mental health. "The chemical release that occurs after a strength-training workout can have both physiological and psychological benefits," Letchford explained.

So whether you're stilling your mind with yin yoga and meditation, going outside for a walk, chasing a runner's high, or lifting some weights, chances are you're going to feel some serious stress relief. It's a win-win.

My Trick For Getting My Daughter to Focus on Schoolwork Only Takes 5 Minutes

My daughter is like most children. Innately she loves to learn, but she gets distracted easily. She has the attention span of most 5-year-olds, which is not long. When she is playing, her short attention span is somewhat endearing. But when I am trying to get her to do some homework or practice her piano, getting her to focus can be frustrating on me.

I am not a child educator and am 100 percent winging it when it comes to knowing what is best for my child's academic growth and development. But after much trial and error, the one thing that has made a world of difference came as a surprise initially.

Thinking back to my days as a student, I recall a lot of sitting at my desk. We had some recess, but most of my days were spent sedentary. Those days got long. As an adult, I realize that I need to move my body and get my blood pumping to clear my mind and get myself ready to focus and take on a task. If I can do this outside, it's an even greater effect. During workdays, I take many smalls breaks and head out for a five-minute walk around the block or do an abbreviated yoga session when my outfit allows. (No yoga in short skirts!)

Turns out, the same principle applies to my daughter. Before we start any task, whether it is practicing her writing skills or practicing her instrument, we take a five-minute "get the wiggles out" routine. What we do specifically varies, but it always involves some activity that gets the heart pumping and our mouths smiling. From a quick game of Simon Says to an abbreviated race, just five minutes of physical activity helps us both be able to focus on the task at hand.

The physical-activity mandate continues throughout the day. Since she is young and has a shorter attention span, she gets five-minute exercise breaks every 20-to-30 minutes to prevent boredom and losing focus. If possible, we do it outside to get some sunshine and fresh air, but if rainy days are upon us, we make do with indoor activities like obstacle courses and hide and seek. Anything fun and active counts.

Getting a kid to focus at home is challenging. Between the toys, screens, and snacks, there are endless distractions and tempting ways to do anything but the task at hand. But, quick bouts of physical activity and laughter makes any mundane task more enjoyable, and getting the "wiggles" out makes little kiddos much more apt to sitting and doing what they need to do.

Fifth Harmony's "Work From Home" Is the Cardio Dance Workout You Need Right Now

With so many of us staying at home because of the coronavirus pandemic, finding fun (even free!) ways to exercise outside of the gym is more essential than ever. The Fitness Marshall has been delivering dance workouts to mega hits for years, and his choreographed routine to Fifth Harmony's "Work From Home" seems even more relevant now than it did in 2016.

If you're feeling a bit shut in and need a break from your Netflix binge, work up a sweat to "Work From Home." Then once you've mastered this routine, skip over to any of The Fitness Marshall's other workouts to keep the blood flowing.

This Resistance Band Set Is Only $13, and It’s Powering My At-Home Workouts

Without access to my gym's wall of dumbbells, rack of barbells, or machinery, it's been a little difficult to continue my strength-training routine - the Instagram 10 push-up challenge is just not for me.

Then, I remembered the Letsfit Resistance Loop Bands ($13) I had stashed in my coffee-table drawer. I bought the resistance bands set a few months back, particularly for the days when I just couldn't get to the gym. Now that my gym is closed and I'm practicing social distancing, they're coming in handy.

On top of being compact (ideal for a small apartment), resistance bands can be used to make certain exercises a little more difficult, and they're amazing for targeting the glutes.

According to Harvard Health Publishing, resistance bands offer a wide range of controlled resistance and allow you to keep resistance in the up-and-down motions of certain exercises, like dumbbell curls. The Arthritis Foundation also lists bands as one of the best exercise tools for those suffering from arthritis.

This particular set includes five different 100 percent latex loop bands at varying resistance levels - x-light, light, medium, heavy and x-heavy - which come in a black mesh bag.

The brand notes that they can be used for anything from stretching and recovery to Pilates and strength training. I have been using the bands to boost my squats and hip raises, to up the intensity of squat jacks and planks, and during Pilates workouts. I plan on trying this arm series workout using the band, as well as adding this 15-minute routine into my schedule, too.

Of course, my favorite part about the set is the price tag - at only $13, it's a purchase I won't regret when I'm able to visit my gym once again.

You Can Still Go Outside While Social Distancing, but You'll Need to Take Some Precautions

Being asked to stay at home can be challenging, particularly if you're dealing with a lot of nervous energy right now. With the 24-hour coverage of the coronavirus growing more unsettling every day, you may find yourself craving some sense of normalcy while practicing social distancing. The good news: if normalcy means getting some much-needed sunlight and fresh air, you can still venture out while keeping yourself and others safe.

"During this pandemic, it is still safe to go outside to get some fresh air and sun, as long as you continue to practice social distancing," Natasha Bhuyan, MD, a family physician and regional medical director at One Medical, told POPSUGAR. "That means staying at least six feet away from other people, whether you are going for a hike, walking your dog, or jogging in the neighborhood." But keep in mind, this might not be as simple as you'd think. "This might take some careful planning, especially for people who live in high-density areas," she said.

Dr. Bhuyan went on to explain that there are steps you can take to ensure you keep a safe distance from others. "This might include some awkward but important maneuvers," she said. For example, you may need to change the side of the street you're walking on if you see people headed your way - and while that may typically seem rude, health and safety (yours and theirs) takes precedence right now.

Additionally, this is not the time for a power walk with some friends. "You should not meet up with a friend to go for a walk unless you are intentionally keeping a physical distance from each other," Dr. Bhuyan said. "While it's hard to comprehend, we know that asymptomatic people might still be carriers of COVID-19 and they can infect others."

So, stay home to help prevent the spread and save lives - but get some fresh air for sure. Just make sure you're flying solo or with a furry friend. And remember, if you are walking your dog, try not to let people come up and pet them during this time. While everyone could use some puppy therapy, allowing a stranger to get that close could put you both at risk.

Idaho Lawmakers Quietly Passed a Bill That Could Ban Transgender Girls From School Sports

As elected officials across the country worked on slowing the spread of the coronavirus, Idaho state legislators had other priorities. On March 16 - three days after the White House declared a national emergency, as cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continued to climb - Idaho lawmakers pushed through a bill that would ban transgender girls and women from playing on school sports teams that align with their gender, and effectively compel any woman student-athlete to undergo an invasive pelvic exam in order to "prove" she is cisgender. The bill was passed by the state Senate in a 24-11 vote.

Now, Governor Brad Little has until Tuesday, March 31, to either veto House Bill 500 or sign it into law, a move that would result in an ongoing legal battle, with civil rights advocates already committed to filing a lawsuit. "We've been warning the state about that for weeks now," Ritchie Eppink, legal director of the ACLU of Idaho, told POPSUGAR. "The Idaho Attorney General warned the legislature about the bill's serious flaws as well." At a time when the nation is bracing for the economic impact of a global pandemic, litigation would only add to the burden. "It will cost Idaho's taxpayers considerably to defend this hateful bill," Eppink said.

Those consequences pale in comparison to those faced by the athletes themselves - and experts worry that the legislation could fuel even more attacks on the rights of the transgender community.

"If I Was a Trans Student Now, I Would Be Devastated"

Eppink described HB 500 as "a constitutional nightmare," noting that by preventing transgender girls and women from participating in athletic programs based on their gender, the legislation violates the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution and the Idaho Constitution, in addition to Title IX, a federal law that protects students against discrimination.

That would be harmful enough, but the vague language in the bill opens the door for anyone - athletes on rival teams, parents, even teammates - to demand that any woman or girl athlete undergo a pelvic exam in order to remain on her team. "With this specific bill, there's no limit to who can accuse who of being transgender," Sara L. Swoboda, MD, an Idaho-based pediatrician, told POPSUGAR. "Anyone participating in female sports would be at risk of someone accusing you of being transgender for any reason, like if they think you're too good or they don't like you."

Even if HB 500 is vetoed, the discussion surrounding the legislation has already caused damaged that won't be easily repaired. "I think if I was a trans student now, I would be devastated to hear the testimony and the vile things that lawmakers are saying about trans youth," Chris Mosier, a transgender athlete and advocate, told POPSUGAR. "These young people and their families, their parents, and their peers have to listen to people debate whether or not they're real and whether or not they deserve the same treatment as the rest of their classmates."

"We know that no one is transitioning for athletic glory."

Mosier noted that the language used by lawmakers who support HB 500 - who often refer to trans girls as "biological boys" - invalidates the identities of trans people. "They're talking about boys playing girls' sports. It doesn't apply to the bill, but that's how they're trying to pass it," he said. One the most stunning comments: "[One representative] painted a picture that trans girls were just boys who couldn't make it on a boys' team and wanted to beat girls, when in fact we know that no one is transitioning for athletic glory," explained Mosier, who traveled to Idaho earlier this month to speak out against the legislation.

Mosier told POPSUGAR that the message from lawmakers was clear: "Trans teens are seen as a threat to sports, and to their peers, as if trans people are not people at all, but rather scary monsters with intentions of ruining girls' sports," he said. "This type of language and rhetoric emboldens community members to further misunderstand and mistreat transgender Idahoans."

"Sports Were the Place Where I Felt Most Like Myself"

Dr. Swoboda explained that the mere possibility of being forced to undergo an examination of internal and external genitalia would be enough to dissuade transgender teens from joining sports teams - and participation in sports often plays a crucial role in the psychological and mental well-being of this population. According to research gathered by The Trevor Project, transgender youth experience significantly higher rates of depression than their cisgender peers, and one in three transgender youth attempted suicide in 2018. Being a member of a team can be a protective factor.

"Kids who participate in activities like sports are happier, they do better in school, and they're more likely to go to college," Dr. Swoboda said. "Why would we exclude one of our most vulnerable populations from that resource?"

Eppink fears that the passage of the bill would have a profound impact on how transgender students are treated. "It will increase the already hostile school environments that trans students and women in general have to deal with on a day-to-day basis," he told POPSUGAR. "It's going to encourage the bullying and harassment that trans students already experience." A 2017 study found that nearly 84 percent of transgender students were bullied or harassed. Dr. Swoboda emphasized that acceptance by both one's peers and authority figures such as coaches is beneficial to the mental health of these teens.

As a young athlete, Mosier found his community through sports. "It was the place where I felt most like myself," he said. Being on a team gave him a sense of belonging, and helped him feel more accepted by his peers. "I know the transformational power of sports and of being on a team. That can greatly help with mental health and feeling supported and safe, whether [transgender teens] are out to their team or not," he said. Mosier said having the support of your peers as you work towards a common goal is something that transgender youth find in very few other places.

While the harm that's been inflicted on the transgender community in Idaho is devastating, there are also concerns that HB 500 could pave the way for more transphobic bills. "This is actually just the beginning, so it's critical that we stop this in its tracks so there's no momentum for lawmakers that are really trying to eliminate trans people from public spaces," Mosier told POPSUGAR.

The ACLU is prepared to fight, in hopes of deterring lawmakers across the nation from following Idaho's lead. "Hopefully the courts will stop this," Eppink said. "Because it's obviously unconstitutional and this is a crucial fight here in Idaho right now."
