If You've Been Looking For a Comfortable, Elastic Face Mask, We've Got You Covered

Since the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recommending that all Americans wear some kind of face covering when out in public, we've been shopping for face masks that we can wear when going to the grocery store, pharmacy, and other essential errands. Plus, as states start to slowly reopen, there are more and more businesses that are requiring face masks for entry. This means, we need a few washable masks on hand, and after trying out a few, we much prefer the ones with elastic straps. They slip over your ears, and for us, they're the most comfortable option.

Whether you like a basic black mask or want something with a fun pattern, these 30 face masks are the ones for you. They're great options to have on hand, because we have a feeling you're going to want to stock up. Just keep reading to shop our picks.

I Get So Many Compliments on My "Cute White Table," but It's Actually a Trash Can!

When I set up my home office space in our kitchen, the one thing I knew had to go was our bulky, eyesore of a trash can. The only place for my desk to fit in the small space was next to it, so if I was going to be working alongside a trash can for the foreseeable future, it better be a cute one. Alas, did a stylish, functional waste vessel exist? I'm happy to report it does exist, and I can't stop raving about it: the Brabantia Bo Touch Trash Can ($152).

Brabantia has a number of modern-looking bins to choose from depending on what size, color, material, and function you're looking for, but the one I selected fit the following requirements: it's on the small side (we take out our trash once a week), it has two removable buckets so we can separate our recycling, it opens with the press of a finger (see it in action ahead), and it has legs so we don't have to bend down. We've had it for a few months now, and while it is a bit of a splurge for a trash can, I'm so happy we went with this one.

The removable buckets making taking out the trash a breeze, it's a cinch to wipe down, and the soft touch feature makes it super convenient to open and close when your hands are full or messy. The only downside is minor, but the trash bag sizes aren't standard US sizes, so once you use up the ones it comes with (I think it only came with two or three), you either have to special order the expensive Brabantia bags or make do with standard sizes. We just use bags that are close enough (a little on the big side), and with the way the buckets fit inside the larger container, it works fine.

Seriously, this is such a simple home upgrade that makes a huge difference, I can't recommend it enough. I've even had more than one friend compliment my "cute white table" before I filled them in on its true purpose (usually prompting a "where can I buy that?" response). Now I don't even notice that I'm working next to a trash can, in fact, I actually like looking at it every day!

I ordered our Brabantia trash can on Amazon for the price, ease of shipping, and style/color, but it's also available at Wayfair, Pottery Barn, Bed Bath & Beyond, Crate and Barrel, The Container Store, and other home retailers. There are multiple color and size options, in addition to the choice between one, two, or three buckets.

See how the Brabantia trash can looks in our space, and shop it ahead!

I Did Gabrielle Union's "Quarantine Abs" Workout, and My Core Is STILL Sore

I've been trying out lots of new workouts while I'm staying at home, from Venus Williams's Instagram Live sweat session, to a full-body couch routine, to Jessica Alba's resistance band butt workout (the burn). But, strangely, I haven't been experimenting with core workouts quite as much. When I heard that Gabrielle Union had a 10-minute "quarantine abs" workout available for free on the FitOn app, I took that as a sign and pulled it up after my morning strength workout.

First thing to know about this workout is that, because it's "quarantine abs," it's no-equipment and very accessible. Union and her sister, Tracy, do all the moves on folded-up cardboard boxes to show that you don't even need a mat to get your core work in. Union's husband (and former NBA star) Dwyane Wade goes on to lead the workout, with Union and her sister doing the moves on the side, and I loved that they kept the workout simple yet fast-moving and effective. You hit all aspects of your core, including your lower abs and obliques. The advanced final move was level-up crunches, which really had me feeling the burn deep in my abs. Shout-out to Union's extremely relatable reactions to each move, which made me laugh out loud multiple times during the workout!

Check out the moves below (we did 10-15 reps of each) and go to the free FitOn app to do the full workout with Union.

Enjoy the Flavor of Homegrown Food With These 20 Edible Garden Plants

There are so many reasons to take up gardening, especially if you're looking for a fun and relaxing new hobby. Surrounding yourself with greenery can help reduce stress, and toiling in the soil is a good form of exercise. Plus, who doesn't love to watch plants grow from seed to seedlings to healthy, full-grown plants as a result of their hard work? While the benefits to gardening can go on forever, our favorite perk is growing plants that you can eat.

There's something so satisfying about being able to whip up a salad using homegrown greens or using your own herbs as the finishing touch to an elaborate meal. Plus, if you just want to make your outdoor space friendlier, filling your backyard or patio with digestible flora is an easy way to do that.

When it comes to edible plants, fruits and vegetables are the obvious place to start. But successful gardening is all about variety, and in addition to a fruit and vegetable garden, there's a world of herbs and edible flowers you can plant as well. These plants are all ideal for having a garden that's both beautiful and fit for human consumption.

This Coconut Lime Daiquiri Will Have You Dreaming of Beach Getaways

A daiquiri doesn't have to be a sugary, blended concoction. The classic version of the rum cocktail is made simply and served up, much like a Papa Doblé daiquiri, and uses just three ingredients: light rum, lime juice, and simple syrup.

For this twist on the classic, we used Malibu coconut rum instead of light rum, and the result is basically vacation in a glass. The lime and coconut combination is deliciously tropical and refreshing, and it's so easy it might just become your new go-to drink this summer. It's like a cocktail you'd get at a tiki bar but far less trouble. Get the recipe ahead!

Coconut Lime Daiquiri

Modified From Alton Brown

Ingredients

  1. 1/2-ounce simple syrup, recipe follows
2 cups crushed ice, plus extra for chilling glass
    2 ounces coconut rum
1-ounce freshly squeezed lime juice, strained of pulp

Directions

  1. Make the simple syrup: Place 2 cups sugar and 1 cup water into a small saucepan over high heat. Bring to a boil. Decrease the heat to medium and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is completely dissolved, approximately 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from the saucepan and allow to cool completely. Syrup can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a month. Makes 3 cups.
  2. If your glass is not chilled, do so by placing some crushed ice in it and set it aside while you prepare the cocktail.
  3. Place 2 cups of crushed ice into a cocktail shaker. Pour the coconut rum, lime juice, and simple syrup over the ice, cover, and shake well. Remove the ice from your serving glass and strain the drink into it. Serve immediately.

Bump, Set, Spike: A Pro Women's Volleyball League Is Coming to the US in 2021

We're soaking up all the good sports news we can find right now, and this definitely qualifies: an American women's indoor volleyball league has officially come together and is due to start playing in February 2021.

Athletes Unlimited Volleyball is set to be a partnership between USA Volleyball and Athletes Unlimited, a company looking to change the face of pro sports through major structural changes such as faster play and a focus on individual athletes, as opposed to location-based teams. (The company has already announced plans for an inaugural women's softball league to start play in August 2020.) The volleyball league will follow an inventive structure in which individual players earn points for every win. Four top-performing players will be named captains and tasked with choosing new rosters every week. Instead of traveling from city to city, each game in the six-week league will be played at a single site.

The new league has already attracted USA Volleyball players Molly McCage, Foluke Akinradewo, and Jordan Larson, the latter two bronze and silver medalists from the past two Olympic Games, with more US stars and recent NCAA grads expected to sign on. "I've been a professional volleyball athlete for a decade now," Akinradewo told the Associated Press. "Every time we want to . . . play professionally we have to leave the country to do it." Playing professionally at home will be "so special," said Akinradewo, who currently competes in a pro Japanese league. (She told AP she plans to continue doing so while participating in the new league.)

Since the '80s, various attempts have been made to start pro American indoor volleyball leagues, most recently the Premier Volleyball League, which appears to have folded following its 2016 season. The new league and its player-focused format is outside the box compared to previous attempts, but the experimentation is a welcome change for players. "They're empowering the athletes," Akinradewo said. "We get to kind of determine the rules and we have a big say in things. It's really the opposite of the life we're living overseas."

Iskra Lawrence Calls the 2 Weeks After Giving Birth the "Most Challenging" of Her Life

Iskra Lawrence and her boyfriend Philip Payne announced the birth of their first child on April 19, and two weeks later the model is getting real about childbirth and life with a newborn. On Monday, Iskra shared a touching and vulnerable message about her recovery and adjustment period.

Iskra began her Instagram post by recognizing that she's in a position of incredible privilege and she's thankful for her baby's health, as well as her own. "But I really want to share all the realness of my journey since becoming a momma because these two weeks have felt like the most challenging of my life," she wrote. "I never imagined how much my wonderful tiny human struggling with colic would affect me and all of the postpartum changes."

Iskra says she felt prepared for pregnancy, but her baby's experience with colic brought on new challenges. "NOTHING could have gotten me ready emotional and mentally to see the love of our lives screaming, bright red, whole body tense and seemingly in discomfort for hours a day and not getting enough sleep," she wrote.

"I must have ordered every product that says it can soothe colicky babies (I feel so privileged to be able to afford that luxury) as well as the most patient incredible daddy @philipapayne who I can't put into words because I'll cry but is the best team mate I could have dreamt of," she said, referring to her boyfriend of two years. "Posted these side by side because this is my current reality.. maybe 1 shampoo a week, still living in my adult diapers (because yes you bleed for weeks after birth) sleep deprivation, leaky nips + hormonal acne."

Iskra ended her post by emphasizing her gratitude for her newborn and acknowledging that life will get easier. "I hope by sharing my struggles and being vulnerable some of you going through it feel less alone and know it's ok to not be ok."

I'm No Horror Fan, but Misha Green and Jordan Peele's Lovecraft Country Teaser Has Me Hooked

If you thought HBO's Watchman was a heady mix of historical events and fantasy-based drama, you're in for a wild ride with the network's upcoming series Lovecraft Country.

Created by Misha Green (Underground), the eight-episode series is based on the 2016 dark fantasy horror novel of the same name by Matt Ruff. The novel explores the juxtaposition between H.P. Lovecraft's horror fiction and Jim Crow-era racism in the US. Both the book and the show follow science-fiction fan Atticus Turner (named Atticus Freeman on the series) as he teams up with his uncle George and friend Letitia "Leti" Lewis in search of his missing father. According to HBO, what follows is "a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback."

The project was ordered straight to series back in May 2018 and is currently slated to premiere on HBO in August. Not only did Green write the series, but she also serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Jordan Peele, J.J. Abrams, Bill Carraro, Yann Demange (who directed the first episode), and Daniel Sackheim (who directed the second and third episodes). The cast of the series has more than a few familiar faces, including Jonathan Majors (When We Rise) as Atticus, Jurnee Smollett-Bell (True Blood, Underground, and Birds of Prey) as Letitia, Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire and Boardwalk Empire) as Atticus's father, Montrose Freeman, and Courtney B. Vance (The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and American Crime Story) as Atticus's uncle, George Freeman.

We can already tell from the brief teaser that Lovecraft Country is going to be a thrilling mix of Green and Peele's styles, which takes on socially conscious horror and allegorical horror while subverting the usual tropes to reveal the very real monsters - humans. Yes, there are flashes of creepy, supernatural monsters in the video - and some badass fighting from the cast - but the novel, and assumedly the show's, true terror isn't from the mythical Cthulhu. It's from the very real terror that people create, like Jim Crow laws and police brutality. So strap in folks, we're ready to get seriously shook when Lovecraft Country premieres on HBO in August!

Adapting My Favorite Hispanic Foods to a Keto Diet Has Helped Me Cope With the Times

Since I've been home 24/7 social distancing, admittedly I have gained a few extra pounds. I owe this to the comfort I find in eating typical Hispanic foods - nachos, rice and beans, tostones, ceviche - you name it and I've probably had it in the past couple of months. Tapping into my heritage, even if it's just with the food I consume, brings me happiness and joy in these uncertain times.

However, I noticed that I wasn't being as healthy as I wanted to be, so I set my mind to find a happy middle. After experimenting a little, I was sold: I was going to make my favorite Hispanic foods keto.

See, typical Hispanic foods are normally comprised of two of the best parts of life: carbs and fats. I decided I needed one or the other and have since opted for fats, modifying my carb intake significantly to practice a low-carb, keto-friendly approach to food.

Related: These Are the Foods You Absolutely Must Cut Out While on the Keto Diet

I am still having all of my favorite Hispanic comfort foods such as tacos - which I make using the Siete Tortillas shells - and tostones (enter: breadfruit tostones, the best low-carb invention ever). I even incorporate rice into my meals at times - Miracle Noodle rice that is, a no-carb alternative that is not a favorite but I prefer it over cauliflower rice.

The good part about a low-carb, higher fat approach is that you can have one of the most decadent foods of all time: queso! I add it to many dishes, in moderation and sometimes in excess. There's no need to skip the cotija cheese on your favorite enchiladas, and you can even make taco shells out of cheddar cheese for Taco Tuesday.

I've found a way to moderate my carb intake while still feeling like mamá (could have) made my meals, and therefore manage my weight gain (as much as I can and without being hard on myself). I'm sharing this in hopes you realize that indulging in the comfort foods that remind you of home doesn't have to be totally unhealthy.

After all, eating habits during COVID-19 are varied, and there's no one size fits all - with the exception of the size of a banana bread, which is always the perfect fit.

Misty Copeland and 31 Ballerinas From Around the World Danced Together, and It's Mesmerizing

Like countless other art organizations, ballet companies depend on ticket sales to stay in operation, but selling tickets is impossible when performance venues are closed. The coronavirus outbreak has shut down theaters, museums, galleries, studios, and opera houses, and as a result, culture is suffering just as much as the economy. Of course, artists and performers who don't know when they'll see another paycheck are also taking a major hit. That's why American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Misty Copeland and her former colleague, Joseph Phillips, decided to launch Swans for Relief, a special video performance featuring dancers from ballet companies around the world.

With help from The Entertainment Industry Foundation and seed funding provided by K Period Media, Copeland and Phillips were able to organize the virtual event, with the goal to raise money for ballet dancers struggling with rent and other living expenses. The video performance features 32 ballerinas, representing 22 ballet companies from 14 countries, including the US, the UK, Australia, South Africa, Norway, Russia, Cuba, France, the Philippines, Canada, Austria, Mexico, Denmark, and China. Though scattered throughout the world, the 32 dancers all perform a variation from Le Cyne (The Swan), accompanied by cellist Wade Davis, and the result is pretty magical.

While the video performance is free to watch, the campaign asks that supporters donate whatever they can on Swans for Relief's GoFundMe page. Copeland and Phillips hope to raise $500,000, and those proceeds will be distributed to the relief funds of the participating dancers' companies.

As the organizers explained on the GoFundMe page, "Art brings people together to provide a beautiful escape, and ballet in particular is a very unifying experience both on and off the stage, filled with history and imagination." This video certainly proves how powerful it is when performers with a shared cause come together.
