Cynthia Erivo Performs a Gorgeous Rendition of "Summertime," and Her Vocals Are Unparalleled
If you're looking for some soul-nourishing content, I'd like to point you in the direction of Cynthia Erivo's performance of "Summertime" from the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The 33-year-old singer and actress belted the soulful tune on Saturday as part of NBC's 2020 Wawa Welcome America July 4th Concert at the Metropolitan Opera House in Philadelphia. Crooning in a gorgeous glimmering dress, Erivo hit every note with ease and passion, enwrapping viewers in her vocal prowess. She posted the staging on Instagram, simply captioning it "Summertime," and earned praise from her followers in the comments section. "Light work," writer and producer Lena Waithe wrote. Actress Kathy Najimy also expressed her admiration, writing, "This was everything and all I needed today." Watch the powerful set above!
I Went to Universal Studios After It Reopened, and Here Are 6 Major Changes You Should Know About
As a Floridian and theme park-lover, Universal Studios has always been a source of joy for my family and I. We always have the best time in Orlando, and it's been incredible to see the rides change over the years. But after the parks closed earlier this year due to the ongoing novel coronavirus (COVD-19) pandemic, I wasn't sure what the future of one of my favorite places would look like. So, when the parks reopened recently, I was itching to make the drive to Orlando and experience it (mostly for the rides, but also for banana split flavor Dippin' Dots) for myself. Here are the top six things you should know about the "new" Universal Studios if you plan on going anytime soon.
Self-Care Sunday: Journaling Has Been Unexpectedly Making Me Feel More Centered
I was that kid who loved going shopping for school supplies. I'm a sucker for a great notebook, and I definitely have pens I like and pens I don't like. When I see a cute notebook, sometimes I grab it, even though I usually write things down on my phone or computer. Well, this past weekend I was feeling a bit stagnant. I had so many thoughts running in my head, and I knew I had to express my emotions in some way. After having a conversation with my parents, I had the sudden urge to write my thoughts down, but I knew I couldn't just open my Notes app. I had to actually take pen to paper.
I grabbed one of my pretty colored pens (the purple one, to be exact) and a journal I keep by my bed that hadn't been opened in months, if not years. I always hear about the power of journaling from some of my favorite wellness influencers, but frankly, I thought it was trivial. However, there is something about physically writing down your thoughts that makes them that much more tangible, and that much more likely to actually stick in your mind. Plus, writing with a colored pen is fun. Now, my notebook is getting filled up again, and I'll probably need another one soon. With all our minds going a million different places at once, it's easy to neglect some self-care, but this is probably one of the simplest acts I can think of that allows me to prioritize my mental health. Writing down my thoughts makes them feel less overwhelming and allows me to make sense of my emotions. I really didn't think it could be this simple. If you're feeling like you need a moment of self-care, grab a pen and paper.

The Baby-Sitters Club Reboot Is a Delight, but Here's What You Should Know Before Your Kids Watch
Get ready for some serious nostalgia, because The Baby-Sitters Club is back in business thanks to Netflix's reboot of the beloved book series (and TV show and movie). And whether or not your kids and teens have been introduced to the series before, they are definitely going to be obsessed with this new show, which features Alicia Silverstone as Kristy's mom and an incredible cast of young actors as the BSC's middle school employees.
The series is an absolute delight - it's modern, feminist, and filled with teachable moments - but that said, it's definitely a show better-suited to tweens and teens in terms of its themes and general entertainment value. The girls of The Baby-Sitters Club are all in middle school, learning about growing up, belonging, and friendship, but the series also broaches a ton of timely and important topics, such as racism, divorce and blending families, and standing up for what you know is right.
Even if your young kids wanted to sit and watch, there isn't much reason why you wouldn't want them to (seriously, cannot stress enough how delightful this show is). But ahead, find a list of some of the main topics that are touched upon during the first season's 10 episodes, so you know what to prepare for in terms of potential teachable moments and difficult conversations with your kiddos.
Topics and Themes in The Baby-Sitters Club to Talk About With Your Kids
- Divorce
- Blending families
- Getting your first period
- Lying to your parents and friends
- Being an LGBTQ+ ally
- Racism
- Gender roles
- Bullying
- Standing up for what you believe in
- Navigating health issues and advocating for yourself
- Coping with medical emergencies and illness
- Death of a parent
- Moving and making new friends
- Starting a business
- Being independent
- Finances and spending money
- Asking for and accepting help from others
- Speaking to your friends about something that upset you
- Being open and honest with your parents
- Taking care of your body
- Dealing with stress and anxiety
- Letting go of things you can't control
All of the above topics - and so, so much more - are touched upon throughout the season, and while some are small enough mentions that they might not bring up your kids' questions or curiosities, they all make for worthy talking points. Your youngest kids may enjoy watching Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia, Stacey, and Dawn having fun and being silly, but your older kids and teens can also learn and take so much away from the Club's experiences and stories. And while they may want to watch the show solo, I recommend watching it yourself if you want to foster those conversations - and because, as I've maybe mentioned once or twice, it is DE-LIGHT-FUL and you will love it as well.

Try These Neck and Back Stretches After Sleeping on the Wrong Side of the Bed
I swear that my subconscious thinks I'm a professional acrobat. My morning neck and back pain are proof of my many nights spent kicking, turning, and tossing to the point that all blankets and pillows flee the scene.
You don't have to be a sleeping gymnast, like me, to know the pain of waking up on the wrong side of the bed, though. That's because no specific sleeping positions (unless you snooze on a couch, chair, or uncomfortable mattress) cause muscle pain, says Dr. Charla Fischer, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at NYU Langone's Spine Center.
Since there isn't one definitive way to get ahead of sleep-induced muscle soreness (we recommend speaking to your doctor for a more personal evaluation), Fischer suggests easing discomfort by stretching for 5-10 minutes a few times a day.
I can attest to this approach, too. My night tumbling hasn't stopped, but I have felt better since reaching out to Lauren Lyons, an ASTYM-certified physical therapist assistant and certified yoga instructor, for a daily neck and back stretching routine. Here's hoping it helps you, too.

Here’s How Ginger Can Help With Migraine Symptom Relief, According to a Doctor
After reading about ginger's digestive benefits and its potential to ease my plaguing PMS, I began sipping on a cup of ginger tea most nights after dinner. My positive experience thus far sent me on a deep-dive Google search, where I came across claims that ginger could help with symptoms associated with headaches and migraines - namely nausea.
When I'm in the midst of a migraine, I want to trust that the solution I've turned to actually works. To get the full picture of ginger and its association to easing migraine symptoms, I reached out to a doctor for a professional opinion. Dr. Rachael Gonzalez, MD - a doctor with a modern holistic medical practice, Parsley Health - confirms that ginger can, in fact, help with alleviating the nausea and stomach issues that sometimes accompany a bad migraine.
"Migraine headaches are often associated with poor gastric motility - or slow digestion, in layman's terms. Because ginger helps with motility - keeping digestion moving through the digestive system at the proper pace - it also helps with migraines," Dr. Gonzalez says.
So, what makes ginger so capable of aiding with motility? According to Dr. Gonzalez, ginger contains what's called "gingerols." This specific family of chemicals has "been shown to work on serotonin receptors in the stomach to improve gastric motility, which reduces pain in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract."
Dr. Gonzalez says it's the painful stimuli in the GI tract that can lead to nausea - and ginger aids in interrupting the pain. What's more, ginger could help other treatments work more effectively. "Many studies have also shown that ginger and other antinausea treatments can improve the response to anti-inflammatory medications and migraine-specific medications used for acute migraine attacks," Dr. Gonzalez says.
When it comes to taking ginger for this purpose, consider reaching out to your doctor for their specific recommendations, to ensure it's safe for you and doesn't conflict with any medications you're currently taking. "Ginger is generally considered safe for most people in low to moderate doses. But when consumed in high doses (greater than 5 grams in a day), it can be dangerous to pregnant women and carries a risk of inducing miscarriage," Dr. Gonazalez says.
Some patients might also have a sensitivity to ginger, while those who take blood thinners or have hypertension or diabetes should be especially careful and should consult their doctor before adding it to their routine. "Ginger may lower blood pressure and blood sugar, and may interact with medications for those conditions," Dr. Gonzalez says. "Patients with acute ulcers may not tolerate the astringent qualities of ginger."
Your doctor can help you figure out the best way for you to incorporate ginger into your diet, however Dr. Gonzalez says that all preparations could be helpful. "Typical doses that work for acute migraines range from 500 mg - 2 grams of ginger per day."
However, depending on how the ginger is processed, the potency of the gingerols could be affected. "Dried ginger is purported to be the strongest, followed by fresh ginger, and then ginger tea, which may be 1/10th as potent as dry powdered ginger. Common dosing is 500-750 mg dried powder capsules, which can be taken in divided dosing up to 2 grams/day," Dr. Gonzalez says.
When it comes to me, I'll be sticking to my early evening tea - because on top of easing my stomachaches, this hot bevi helps satiate my hankering for sweet, sugary snacks. That's a win-win as far as I'm concerned.

Jay Ellis and Nina Senicar Make Such a Stunning Couple, We Can't Look Away
Jay Ellis's love life may be complicated in his role as Lawrence on Insecure, but offscreen, it's a different story. The 38-year-old actor has been romancing Serbian actress Nina Senicar since 2015, though it wasn't until 2017 that he confirmed their relationship during an interview with The Breakfast Club. Given how private Jay is when it comes to his personal life, he didn't divulge too many details about their romance, but he did say he's in "a very happy relationship." "I don't really worry about anything else, and that's it," Jay said. "I think for me, we give so much of ourselves in what we do no matter what side of the industry we're on, so for me . . . a relationship for me is probably the most important thing that I think two people can have."
In June 2019, Nina revealed to Serbian magazine Story that she and Jay were expecting their first child together. In that same interview, Nina also announced that she and Jay were engaged and set to tie the knot that summer. Five months later, the pair became parents to a beautiful baby girl named Nora Grace. While we patiently wait for season five of Insecure, see some of Jay and Nina's sweetest moments ahead.

Kanye West Tweets That He's Running For President in 2020
Is Kanye West heading down the campaign trail? On July 4th, the 43-year-old rapper tweeted that he is running for president in the upcoming 2020 election against Donald Trump - whom he has publicly supported in the past - and Joe Biden. "We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States!" he wrote alongside the hashtag #2020VISION. Though Kanye didn't offer up any more details, it seems he has Elon Musk's vote. The CEO of SpaceX quickly replied to Kanye's tweet writing, "You have my full support!"

Interestingly enough, this isn't the first time Kanye has talked about running for president. During the MTV Video Music Awards way back in 2015, he said that he would be running in the 2020 election during his speech for the Vanguard Award. Still, it's unclear whether he has filed paperwork to officially launch a presidential campaign.

Original Story: Five years after its finale, Nick News is returning with a 60-minute special hosted by Alicia Keys, called Kids, Race and Unity: A Nick News Special. The presentation's intent is to amplify the voices of Black children across the country, highlight teen activists fighting racial injustice, and feature the leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement, who will answer kids' questions and share tips and tools for parents to be able to foster meaningful conversations about race in their homes. Kids, Race and Unity: A Nick News Special, which premieres on June 29 at 7 p.m. local time, will be "the first of a series of Nick News specials that will air on Nickelodeon in the coming months."
"I've had a vision of a forum that can engage kids during this time and help to focus our attention on how they might be feeling, and this Nick News special is it!" Alicia said in a press release. "Talking about race can be sensitive and uncomfortable; and sometimes we try to protect our children from racism they are already experiencing. But honestly, there is no way around this topic if we want to move forward in any kind of meaningful way. What's happening in the world is not just a problem for the Black community, it's all of our problem and we ALL have to care about it in order to change it! This is such an important, vulnerable, honest and beautiful conversation, and I know many families may be searching for the right way to enter it. Let's really deep dive together."
In the special, Alicia will host discussions with the cofounders of Black Lives Matter, 12-year-old singer Keedron Bryant, author Ibram X. Kendi, the six Nashville teens who founded Teens4Equality, social media star Tabitha Brown and her family, and family therapist Dr. George James. Additionally, antiracism resources provided by Dr. James and The Conscious Kid will be made available to parents on Nick's website after the show airs.

I Ditched My Fitness Watches During the Pandemic, and I Might Keep It That Way
There was a time, not too long ago, when I was a double-fisting fitness tracker kind of girl: Apple Watch on the right hand, FitBit on the left. It's not that I monitor my steps and calorie count that closely. I just liked getting the happy notification that I'd hit my step goal, or feeling the satisfaction of closing all my rings. It was fun to hit little daily goals and feel proud of myself, and keep up some friendly ("friendly") competition with my family while I was at it.
When we started to shelter in place, my step count went down. A lot. Like, all the way. I didn't have my three-mile walking commute and I was dealing with some nagging injuries, so I couldn't run around my neighborhood or even do a lot of at-home workouts. My Apple Watch, of course, noticed REAL fast. It thought some concerned notifications would help. "Maggie, you're usually farther along on your rings by now." "Maggie, you closed your rings once last week." Even the encouraging messages just came off as condescending: "Maggie, you've almost closed your exercise ring! A brisk 20-minute walk should do it." As though it was that easy with one foot in a walking boot and a pandemic making me nervous to leave the house.
I could've just turned off the notifications, but even on the days my trackers didn't ping me, a quick glance at the time (and my rings and step count) was a reminder of how far behind I was. It was such a small thing, but I couldn't stop the cascade of negative thoughts that would follow. "You're so out of shape compared to last year." "You're not working out at all anymore." "Remember when you'd hit 12,000 steps a day like it was nothing?"
I was already stressed and anxious from the pandemic, but beyond staying at home and wearing a mask, I couldn't do much about that. Instead, I took all that fear and negativity and turned it toward my falling step counts, my low calorie burn, my fitness, and my body. Seeing the actual numbers was just evidence that I was losing control of yet another part of my life. It was like if I berated myself about it - with hard numbers to back it up! - I could prove that I still had some kind of power.
I don't know if you know this, but being hard on yourself has never actually forced a pandemic to go away or made an injury heal faster or magically turned life back to normal. (Hear that, anxiety?) There were a lot of things I couldn't control - and it'll probably be that way for a while - but one simple, small thing I could do was give it a rest on the fitness tracking. I liked my Apple Watch and FitBit because they told me tidbits of info I didn't know, like how much I was walking or standing or burning in a day, but when you're at home 24/7 and unable to work out, you pretty much already know the answers to those questions. I didn't need the constant reminders, especially if my brain was going to take it as an excuse to whip up some more negativity. We all have enough of that already.
Currently my Apple Watch and my FitBit are both chilling in their chargers, and that's where they're staying for a while. I might strap one on when I can run again, but even then, I'm not sure; I don't exactly have a race to train for, and going out for a run without any numbers on my mind sounds pretty wonderful. Monitoring things like steps, calories, and standing is helpful and fun for some people, but I realized that for me, it just played into a need for control that quickly turned toxic when I couldn't satisfy it. As I'm slowly (soooo slowly) starting to work out again, all I really want is that amazing rush of endorphins and calm that comes after a hard workout. You know that simple joy of movement that can't be quantified or tracked on your wrist or sent to you in a notification? I can't wait to feel that again.

A Little Goes a Long Way With These 5 Trainer-Approved Pilates-Ring Exercises
I've daydreamed of ordering a reformer - but, my wallet and the square footage of my apartment agree that there are more realistic Pilates tools I can use for effective, joint-friendly workouts at home.
A Pilates ring - which Club Pilates instructor Lencola Green also calls the "Magic Circle" - is the perfect example, as it can assist or add resistance to several exercises.
"The ring is a great tool for deepening the mind-body connection and toning muscles - and it's so versatile," she says.
Since Green is well-versed in Pilates rings and how well they can help build strength throughout the body (especially the butt, core, arms, and inner thighs!), I thought she'd be the perfect person to share some of her favorite Pilates-ring exercises.
As you follow along, know that Pilates rings come in many different resistance levels. According to Green, a little goes a long way, which is why a moderate resistance is great for most skill levels.

10 Times Lin-Manuel Miranda and Anthony Ramos Proved They Were the Ultimate Duo
If it wasn't for Anthony Ramos's off-Broadway show Heart and Lights closing during previews, he may never have crossed paths with Lin-Manuel Miranda. Fortunately for us, Anthony was able to audition for what was then called The Hamilton Mixtape, book the job, and meet Lin-Manuel, aka the man who would become his mentor. Their chemistry on stage as both friends and father and son (Anthony pulls double duty in Hamilton as John Laurens and Philip Hamilton) is one of the best parts of the musical and demonstrates just how close the pair got over the course of their year on the show.
While Hamilton may have been the catalyst for their relationship, it's not the only musical the pair share. After Anthony was cast in the workshop of Hamilton, Lin-Manuel asked him to be part of 21 Chump Street, a 14-minute musical based on episode #457 of This American Life called "What I Did For Love." "Lin put me on the map with that one," Anthony previously told TheaterMania. "I'm really grateful that he trusted me with his material."
Now if that didn't convince you of the trust they have in one another, the fact that Lin-Manuel is passing the role of Usnavi from In the Heights (a role he both wrote and originated on Broadway) to Anthony for the movie version should. In an interview with The New York Post, Anthony stated that "it's amazing that [Lin] handed over this role that meant so much for him to play, and basically was like, 'I'ma trust you with this.'" Thankfully, they'll both be appearing in the film version, as Lin-Manuel will be playing Piragüero, aka the iconic Piragua Guy. If you want to see more of the friends, you can catch them in Disney+'s Hamilton on July 3, or you can keep scrolling to see some of their cutest moments - including Lin-Manuel fangirling over Anthony's relationship with Jasmine Cephas Jones.
