Hormones Can Cause Belly Fat - Here's What You Can Do to Lose It, According to 2 Experts

Belly fat happens especially as our metabolism slows down with age, and it largely has to do with genetics. Another culprit of belly fat? You're not eating a balanced diet and exercising. But two endocrinologists POPSUGAR spoke to, Rocio Salas-Whalen, MD, board-certified endocrinologist at New York Endocrinology, and Jaime Knopman, MD, board-certified reproductive endocrinologist at CCRM Fertility, explained that hormones might also be to blame.

Dr. Salas-Whalen said that hormonal belly fat is commonly associated with visceral fat, which is the fat that attaches to internal organs like your liver and pancreas. Subcutaneous fat, in contrast, is what you can pinch with your fingers. It's the visceral fat that causes worry, she said, because of the health problems that could come with it. For instance, this type of fat could indicate or lead to metabolic syndrome - meaning you have a cluster of metabolic disorders such as obesity, high blood pressure, and high fasting glucose levels - or even diabetes.

Another possibility? Polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, which affects women of childbearing age, and occurs when they produce too much of the male hormones. This can predispose them to type-2 diabetes due to high blood sugar levels. Of course, hormonal belly fat doesn't always have to indicate these conditions. Women going through menopause or IVF can also accumulate belly fat because of fluctuations in hormones - during menopause specifically, there's a decrease in estrogen. Read more about these potential causes of hormonal belly fat here.

How to Lose Hormonal Belly Fat

You cannot spot reduce belly fat, or any fat for that matter - we've written about this plenty of times, but it's worth repeating. There are some key things you can do, though, to help improve your health and shed fat overall. We'll get into what you can do for hormonal belly fat if you don't have the underlying conditions these endocrinologists talk about and what to do if you do have them (or think you do).

Without Underlying Conditions: Nutrition, Exercise, Etc.

Dr. Knopman is a fan of weight loss in the healthiest way possible, which involves focusing on nutrition best practices and staying away from fad diets. "Have all of the food groups, but in moderation. If that means you have to go sit with a nutritionist and come up with a healthy diet for you, then do that," she said. Check out foods that benefit your metabolism here (also here).

Exercise is important too, Dr. Knopman said. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults do at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic workouts or 75 to 150 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity per week. HIIT, strength training, and cardio are most effective for targeting fat overall.

Stress, the two endocrinologists agreed, doesn't help because the stress hormone cortisol can also contribute to belly fat. So, you may want to evaluate your lifestyle and see if you need to incorporate practices of self-care and get more sleep (since lack of sleep can increase cortisol production). For more on the basics of fat loss - like eating in a caloric deficit, and staying active outside of the gym - check out this easy-to-follow guide.

With Underlying Conditions: Treatments Vary but Take Notes

Similar guidelines go for people who might have PCOS, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes because these all have to do with insulin resistance (which you can read about here). "The starches, the white flour, the sugars, all of that is contributing to the belly fat. So by cutting back on that, they're going to lose the weight and improve whatever metabolic problem they have," Dr. Salas-Whalen said, adding that they really do need to monitor intake of simple carbs. Having an exercise routine is strongly recommended as well.

Dr. Salas-Whalen explained that if a doctor evaluated a patient with this type of belly fat and found things like elevated enzymes, cholesterol, and blood pressure, that doctor may suggest either a weight-loss medication - a newer one is GLP-1 analogues, a family of injectables, she said - or a targeted treatment for PCOS or diabetes. One oral medication used for PCOS and diabetes is Metformin.

Dr. Knopman said that birth control is used for PCOS symptoms as well. "If you're having these wide fluctuations in your hormones, the pill's going to even you out," she said. Find more information about diabetes treatment at diabetes.org and more about PCOS treatment on the PCOS Awareness Association website. And, please do contact your doctor for further information.

One Last Note About Contacting Your Doctor

Going through menopause is a natural process that occurs when you age. Also occurring with age is a slower metabolism. Fat is going to accumulate on your body as you get older; that's just how it is. But, if you're doing everything you can to lose wight - eating healthy, exercising, reducing stress - and you're not seeing results, you may want to contact your doctor as it may be hormonal belly fat linked to a more serious underlying condition. Dr. Salas-Whalen suggests visiting your primary care provider first or going directly to an endocrinologist.

For the Opening of Her Vegas Exhibit, Lady Gaga Wore an Outfit That's Just So . . . Her

Lady Gaga's latest outfit proves why her wardrobe is worthy of its own exhibit. With her two Las Vegas residencies well underway, the singer and actress recently celebrated the grand opening of her Haus of Gaga exhibit at the Park MGM on May 30. The exhibit will display memorabilia and her many memorable outfits, including her famous meat dress at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, as well as the many Brandon Maxwell looks she wore to the most recent Met Gala.

For the party, Gaga was peak Gaga wearing an oversize orange tulle Laurence & Chico skirt, motorcycle jacket, leopard sunglasses, and a teeny cropped t-shirt with the phrase, "Don't be a drag just be a queen," borrowed from her 2011 song "Born This Way." To take the outfit a step further, Gaga also wore ultrahigh platform boots, which felt reminiscent of the sky-high Alexander McQueen heels she often wore at the start of her career.

The look is particularly exciting given her more classically glamorous and buttoned-up appearance during last year's the A Star Is Born press tour and subsequent award season. We have to say, it's good to have her back. See photos of Gaga seemingly having the most fun ever ahead.

"There are many things like that, and honestly, these are the words that I've come to live by and incorporate these types of things and way of life in the past few years. So, I just wanted to put that in my music and my video." Watch the video for the Zedd-produced song above, and take a peek at the cover art below.

Dark: The Eerie Trailer For Season 2 Sent Chills ALLLLL the Way Down My Spine

Netflix's Dark is returning for a second season on June 21, and the trailer for the new episodes confirms they'll be just as eerie and terrifying as the first installment.

The intriguing German sci-fi series arrived on Netflix in 2017 and soon earned (slightly unfair) comparisons to Stranger Things, but it soon proved to be far more complex - and pretty freakin' confusing - than the beloved '80s-tinged hit. Dark weaves an elaborate time-traveling mystery throughout its 10-episode first season, introducing a large group of characters and a series of flashbacks to two other time periods: 1953 and 1986. That means that as the mystery of where when Mikkel Nielsen disappeared to, the pool of characters only widened and got more confusing.

In season two, it looks like we'll get some answers. The trailer shows Jonas (Louis Hofmann) wandering the wreckage of his town in a protective yellow suit, presumably to protect him from the radiation that likely came from a nuclear explosion at the power plant. There are charred bodies hanging from trees (yikes), it looks like the dangerous time machine is still sending young boys to their deaths, and a voice warns that "the apocalypse needs to happen." Again I say: yikes. Watch the trailer for the trilogy's second season above.

Here's the 1 Rule I Use to Determine If Your Kids Can Come to My Wedding

When I first got engaged during what now seems like the prehistoric era, I had already made up my mind about one thing: we weren't going to have any kids on the guest list. Why is that, you ask? Because between how expensive footing the bill for, in our case, 40-plus additional tiny humans on top of our original 185-person guest list - damn you, enormous Irish families! - my fiancé and I truly didn't think that our cousins and friends would want to chase after their little ones all night if they could avoid it.

Of course, there were exceptions to this no-kids rule. The ring-bearer, flower girl, and her adorable little brother were welcome to come from the get-go. I'm not that much of a monster most days, depending on who you ask.

But then I had a revelation: what about the few cousins I had who were coming from out of state? What about their kids? As a parenting editor, I know how much traveling with your own children can suck. I know how hard it can be to find a sitter for a full weekend, or God forbid, attempting to hire a mysterious babysitter in a city you don't live in for a few hours.

Before I dive in, it's important to keep in mind that I live in New Jersey, the land of over-the-top, I-need-to-remortage-my-house expensive wedding venues, women who swore they wouldn't become a bridezillas who end up going absolutely nuclear, and highly questionable spray tans. The point? Nine times out of 10, most parents don't expect their children to be invited, especially if they have teeny kids and it's some fancy sit-down dinner. They know it's expensive. They generally won't hold it against you.

Because of my job, I get a pretty in-depth look at how downright sh*tty it can be to travel with kids who aren't old enough to manage their own well-being just yet. Not only do you have to shell out hundreds - if not thousands - of dollars to fly your whole family in for a wedding, but you have to schlep extra bags, strollers, and potentially car seats throughout the damn airport all while keeping an eye on your kids. For Christmas' sake, it could be an Olympic sport.

And frankly, it sounds like the seventh circle of hell.

While driving your entire brood is most likely the cheaper option, depending on where you live, it has its points of sheer misery, as well. Think: the "Baby Shark Song" on a constant, mind-numbing, loop; getting your seat kicked to the point where you can fire your chiropractor; and of course, various ill-timed "emergency" bathroom breaks, and potential hazmat-level diaper explosions.

Perhaps, that's the sixth circle of aforementioned hell, then.

As I began to go through the absolute Perfect Storm-level hellscape that is deciding on invitations, gathering addresses, and mailing those suckers out using my monthly grocery budget's worth of stamps, I realized that I should, perhaps, include a few children for the reasons I mentioned above. So rather than throwing my hands up and muttering some tired nonsense about how it's "our day" and "you can figure it out," I became a little more flexible with the rule book. And not to pat myself on the back, but I think it's a pretty good idea.

If you have to drive multiple hours in the car or book a flight, then of course, your children are welcome to attend our wedding. When you really think about it, if parents decide to suck it up and offer to shell out the cash for a sitter for at least a full-weekend or pack up their entire squad for your big day, the least us soon-to-be married couples can do is be flexible. And that means letting a few kiddies come along for the day. Will they probably need a nap at some point? Yes. Will they exclusively eat chicken nuggets at the soirée? Most likely. But that's really fine if it works for the parents.

And full disclosure: it's not the same for couples who are from the area who can most likely find a sitter a little bit easier or can pawn their children on a family member for the night. Not even a little, really. Truth be told, if you're gonna give anyone some slack, it should be the out-of-town parents, who clearly love you enough to check the "yes" option on the RSVP card, despite having to haul a small army's worth of people and equipment across state lines.

The Lion King's Photorealistic Pumbaa Poster Is Freaking Some Disney Fans the F*ck Out

Disney's upcoming live-action version of The Lion King first sparked debate when the teaser for the film arrived and fans realized that it's not quite as live as many thought it would be. Like in the reboot of classic animated film The Jungle Book, the studio is going with a hyper-realistic, CGI recreation of characters in the story, which we got an up close and personal look at in a new batch of character posters released on Thursday.

The cast of the remake includes everyone from Donald Glover and Beyoncé as Simba and Nala, to Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen as Timon and Pumbaa. But despite the fanfare surrounding Nala's big reveal, it's Rogen's poster that has ignited a heated (and hilarious) discourse on social media.

Is Pumbaa - who, I must note, is a warthog who now looks like what real warthogs generally look like - too terrifying? Is he perfectly accurate? Are you nervous you'll turn over in bed tonight and see his tiny, beady eyes staring at you from your closet? Do you want to spend the day slurping bugs out of logs with him?

I, like most of Twitter, can't really decide what to make of new Pumbaa. Keep scrolling to see some choice tweets about his new look, and then be sure to check out the debate over another divisive Lion King character (spoiler alert: it's Scar).

After watching all five seasons of HGTV's Fixer Upper, it's safe to say we all want to bring home Joanna Gaines's style. The designer's rustic, wholesome approach has touched our hearts in more ways than one, making Joanna and her husband Chip a hot commodity in the interior design world. Although not all of us can be graced with a Fixer Upper from the Gaineses themselves, there are still a number of ways to get Joanna's touch. From the couple's endless collaborations with brands like Target and Anthropologie to their very own Magnolia brand, it's never been easier to incorporate Joanna's farmhouse style into our everyday lives.

Fortunately, with the sunny season in mind, Magnolia released its 2019 Summer collection, and its attractive home accents may be hotter than Waco, TX, on a Summer day. Prep and prime your home for summertime with these Magnolia pieces ahead!

Yep, You Can Drink the Same Blue Milk as Luke Skywalker at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

What does blue milk taste like? Star Wars fans know Luke Skywalker has a special affinity for the stuff, dating back to A New Hope, but the appeal has been unknown to most viewers for years. Well, wonder no longer, galactic foodies!

Disneyland park visitors can try Blue and Green Milk at the Milk Stand in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge starting May 31. Culinary Director Brian Piasecki told POPSUGAR he went down a "plant-based" road with the drinks since "the idea of drinking real milk in 95- to 100-degree weather is probably not something most people want to do" in California or Florida.

The brand-new beverages are a frozen blend of coconut and rice milk, plus some fruity accents and supersweet flavors, with Green Milk delivering a bit more zing - it comes from a different intergalactic creature, after all. It's not quite a milkshake and not quite a smoothie, but if you're in the mood for a (supersweet) frozen concoction on a hot Summer park day, stop by The Milk Stand in Disneyland on May 31 and in Disney World on Aug. 29.

The sun is finally out, and we can guarantee that romance is in the air . . . From Netflix's latest batch of rom-coms to exciting documentaries that set your heart aflutter, keep reading to see what romantic movies you should keep on your radar this Summer.

The 10 Biggest Differences Between Disney's Aladdin Reboot and the Original

The last time we got to see everyone's favorite street rat attempting to steal trinkets in Agrabah, it was 1992. But now, thanks to Hollywood's insatiable need to remake all the movies of our childhoods, we have a 2019 take on Aladdin starring Mena Massoud as the live-action version of the character. Will Smith is also on hand as the wise-cracking Genie, and Naomi Scott plays the angelic-voiced Princess Jasmine. While much of the story has stayed the same and the soundtrack is still as magical as ever, the Guy Ritchie-directed reboot makes a number of interesting changes to the original that go far beyond the fact that it's no longer animated. Just be warned: spoilers for the new film ahead!
