House Dems, This Proposed Bill Isn't Going to Accomplish What You Think It Will

The House Democrats' plan to prevent another president like Donald Trump is counterintuitive, to say the least. Representative Earl Blumenauer introduced a bill on April 17 that would permit former presidents, in partnership with the sitting vice president, to decide whether a sitting president is fit to serve.

Blumenauer proposed the bill to augment the 25th Amendment which established a chain of succession to the vice president in the incident of death, impeachment, or resignation. His bid would empower former presidents to analyze the incumbent's mental health. However, the vice president and congress technically already have the ability to determine whether a president is mentally fit to serve under the 25th Amendment.

"It is hard to imagine a better group to work with the vice president to examine whether the president is able to discharge the duties of the office," Blumenauer's statement about the bill read. "When there are questions about the president's ability to fulfill his or her constitutional responsibilities, it is in the country's best interest to have a mechanism in place that works effectively."

Of course, since Donald Trump is already president, this bill is slightly problematic as it could potentially give him the power to unseat his predecessor. Many Twitter users rather comically pointed this out, see ahead for a few highlights.
