Sheriff David Clarke Might Be Working Homeland Security Soon - and That's Terrifying

In a radio interview on May 17, David Clarke Jr. - a vocal advocate of President Trump - claimed he has been hired by the Department of Homeland Security as assistant secretary. The highly controversial Clarke is presently the Milwaukee County Sheriff, but said he will join Homeland Security primarily as a liaison between local law enforcement and the federal department.

Despite Clarke's declaration, DHS made a separate announcement on Twitter later in the day, clarifying that it had not hired any senior-level positions.

It was previously reported that Clarke would join Trump's administration as Homeland Security secretary; a position that eventually went to John F. Kelly. We'll update this story as more information on Clarke's potential role with DHS comes in, but in the meantime, here's a condensed history of Clarke's political positions, record of contentious comments, and leadership style:

At least four inmates, including a newborn, have died in Milwaukee County jails Clarke oversees since last April.

Clarke, who has been sheriff in Milwaukee County since 2002, oversees its jails. Over the last 18 months a disturbing trend has emerged in Milwaukee: inmates are dying of completely preventable causes. One inmate, Terril Thomas, died after officers shut off water in his cell and refused to give the man water for nearly a week. Terril's death was ruled a homicide due to "extreme dehydration." Another inmate, Shadé Swayzer, went into labor while being held in a Milwaukee County jail last July: she claimed that her requests for medical attention were repeatedly denied. Swayzer's newborn was pronounced dead hours after she gave birth in her cell. Two other inmates died in August and October of 2016 while in custody; investigators have not released causes of death for either inmate.

Clarke described Black Lives Matter as a hate group.

Clarke rose to national media prominence during his appearances on Fox News to discuss Black Lives Matter and police brutally protests. In an op-ed for The Hill, Clarke described the activist group as "enemies" of the state and more specifically compared them to the terrorist organization ISIS. Many have speculated whether Clarke's classification of Black Lives Matter as a "hate group" would become official if he joined Trump's administration.

Clarke has suggested suspending habeas corpus (the right for trial) for suspected terrorists.

In his memoir, Clarke called for the incarceration without trial of some "million" people who have pledged allegiance or supported ISIS. Arguing that they should be sent to Guantanamo Bay, Clarke said he thought "our commander in chief ought to utilize Article I, Section 9 and take all of these individuals that are suspected, these ones on the internet spewing jihadi rhetoric . . . to scoop them up, charge them with treason and, under habeas corpus, detain them indefinitely at Gitmo." The million number he proposed was "just a guess" but Clarke contended it was necessary action for a country at war.

Despite Clarke's popularity amongst Republicans and Trump's administration, a January 2017 poll revealed that a majority of Milwaukee citizens disapproved of the sheriff: a meager 31 percent of respondents to Public Policy Polling's survey approved of Clarke's job.
