The Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley Will Make Your Jaw Drop
"Death Valley" doesn't necessarily sound all that inviting, but the National Park in California simply can't be missed. Right in the center of the desert, travelers can visit the Mesquire Flat Sand Dunes, the small part of the park that's actually covered in sand. The highest dune rises to about 100 feet, but the dunes actually cover a wide area. "This dune field includes three types of dunes: crescent, linear, and star shaped," says the National Park Service. "Polygon-cracked clay of an ancient lakebed forms the floor. Mesquite trees have created large hummocks that provide stable habitats for wildlife."
But for Star Wars fans, this place has significance way beyond its natural beauty. Death Valley was used as filming location for Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. Travelers flock to the Mesquite dunes to seek out the exact spots where their favorite scenes were filmed, and some even come decked out in full Star Wars attire.
