5 Things Every Tomato-Grower Needs to Know Before Planting
Interested in gardening? Tomatoes are one of the easiest things to grow. While the plants are pretty forgiving, there are a few things you can do to amp up your tomato production so you can enjoy the tart fruit all Summer long.
Pick a brand-new spot with full sun.
Tomatoes need at least 8-10 hours of full sunlight so pick the right spot accordingly. Also, don't plant in the same spot! Tomatoes are prone to disease if grown in the same area year after year! Rotate the area where you plant them.
Work compost into the soil before planting the starts.
As with every season, work several inches of compost into the soil beds to keep them nutrient-dense and to help maintain the moisture and structure of the soil.
Bury most of the stem when planting the starts.
The stem of the start ought to be buried! While this seems slightly off of intuitive, burying the roots and the stem (up to the first leaves) actually helps establish a strong root system.
Let the water grow flowers, not foilage.
Tomatoes grow a staggering, unbelieveable amount of leaves that can grow into a tangled mess quickly. Keep them in check by watering the roots, not the leaves. Each day, pinch off non-flowering branches so the water is directed toward producing flowers and fruit, not foilage.
Stagger when and where you plant your tomatoes.
Stagger the tomato starts a foot to 18 inches apart along a trellis. And, plant only half of your tomatoes now and half later (several weeks to a month). This way, you aren't harvesting tons of tomatoes at the same time.
