The Reason 1 Mom Is Completely Appalled at Her Son's Homework Assignment
There is so much buzz about Common Core all over the Internet, typically regarding ridiculous assignments with problems that even parents can't seem to solve - Amy Loper is one mom who is stumped by her son's homework, but it's not because she can't help him figure out the answer.
Amy's son, who is in the eighth grade, brought home a language arts assignment from school, which laid out a potential life scenario and required students to write a "reactive response." She was completely appalled to find that the scenario included unprotected sex, drinking, and STDs, so she posted a photo of the assignment to Facebook.
"You had a really rotten day, but lucky for you your best friend is having an awesome party later. You go to the party and start drinking. You have a little too much to drink and start talking to this girl/guy you've never seen before. You head upstairs to get better acquainted despite several friends telling you that you don't even know this person. You end up having sex with this person. The next day you really can't remember everything that happened and rely on your best friend to fill you in. A week later you find out that you contracted herpes from your one night stand and that this is a disease that you will have all your life and never know when an outbreak will occur."
Amy expressed her confusion and upset in her post, "An assignment that was sent home today with eighth graders. . . . Needless to say this is ridiculous. I was told it's Common Core. . . . You have got to be out of your f$#&ing mind." She wrote that she has called the superintendent to talk about this assignment, which seems to imply to students that it's "OK to drink and have unprotected one-night stands."
What do you think of this Common Core assignment?
