When dozens of students showed up to Isca Academy in England, they made a major statement without saying a word. The teenage boys were technically all wearing the school's uniform but just not the version that teachers are used to seeing them in: pants.
These British students were all protesting their school's uniform policy because a heat wave was making the long pants feel unbearable. Since shorts are not allowed at school, even though girls are permitted to wear skirts, the guys got together to dress in the cooler option.
The boys told BBC that they hope the school will reconsider modifying their uniform policy during hot weather to make all students more comfortable. "I'm not sitting in trousers all day, it's a bit hot," one student said, according to BBC.
The idea for this creative protest originated after some male students asked if they could wear shorts considering that it was going to be the hottest June day since 1976. When the head teacher explained that bare legs were not allowed, the students brought up that girls have the option to wear skirts or trousers. In jest, the teacher said that nothing was stopping them from wearing skirts too.
The boys took this idea and ran with it. Some students borrowed skirts from girlfriends and others from sisters so that an estimated 30 boys could arrive at school in their new ensembles.
Although no decision has officially been announced, it looks like their fashion choice might have made a lasting impact. "We recognize that the last few days have been exceptionally hot and we are doing our utmost to enable both students and staff to remain as comfortable as possible," head teacher Aimee Mitchell said. "Shorts are not currently part of our uniform for boys and I would not want to make any changes without consulting both students and their families. However, with hotter weather becoming more normal, I would be happy to consider a change for the future."
