Why This Mom's Post Should Be Required Reading Following the Charlottesville Attack
As tension builds in the nation, many parents are left wondering how their children are processing these uncertain times. One writer and mom of two beautifully put into words her perspective on the matter. On Facebook, Mia Carella shared a black-and-white picture of her daughter and began her moving reflection with, "To see the world through my children's eyes is beautiful."
Why is it "beautiful" to see the world through the eyes of children? Because that world is "safe and loving and inclusive," Mia said. She added, "Everyone is a friend until proven otherwise by actions or words. Appearance and background have no bearing on how people are perceived."
Mia went on to acknowledge that she can really only influence the opinion and lives of her own children. Even so, she is committed to teaching them compassion and acceptance. She said, "In the face of hatred, I will teach them love. In the face of violence, I will teach them peace. In the face of intolerance, I will teach them to reach out to others. In the face of fear, I will teach them hope."
The post has resonated with its readers, amassing appreciative comments about how adults might be able to learn from the perspective of little ones. As one commenter noted, "These are very powerful words that we all need to live by."
