The Viral Story of a Stranger's Good Deed at a Gas Station Will Give You Chills

One man's uplifting encounter with a stranger at a gas station serves as a much-needed reminder to embrace the kindness of others and pass it on.

In Albury, Australia, Tyson Crawley stopped at a gas station before work to refuel his car and grab iced coffee when he realized he didn't have his brand-new bank card with him. Scrambling, Tyson tried using a different card but was completely blanking on that card's PIN number. Faced with a $110 bill, his dogs barking outside, and the realization that he would likely be late for work, he began to panic. That's when a total stranger intervened.

The stranger was previously in the gas station to purchase a cup of coffee. When he noticed Tyson struggling, he walked back in and asked Tyson if he needed some money. Tyson initially rejected the act of kindness due to the large amount he owed but eventually accepted and told the stranger he would transfer him the money back. The stranger agreed, wrote down his number on the back of the receipt, and then took a selfie with Tyson who insisted he capture the touching moment.

When Tyson later looked at the back of the receipt, he saw what the stranger had actually written: "Pass it on." You can read the story from Tyson in his Facebook post below.

In his retelling the story on Facebook, Tyson wrote, "Please be beautiful people, and remember it's not about keeping up with the joneses, having the biggest house, most expensive car, the largest bank account, but work with each other." He ended with,"After all, what is money compared to the quality of human life?" The powerful post has more than 900 reactions, 200 shares, and 100 comments on Facebook - although those numbers will likely increase as the story spreads.

After some investigating, it was discovered that the kind stranger is John Kennedy Jr., a former ice hockey player from Michigan who currently works for a geotech company. John spoke with Mashable about the encounter and said, "I saw a brother in need and just wanted to help." Adding, "Tyson asked me to write my number down and I didn't want him to return the money, I just thought 'pass it on' as in pass on 'something good.'"

Both John and Tyson have expressed feeling awestruck by the response their story has received.

A Brief History of Marvel's Luke Cage, Your Latest Netflix Obsession

Luke Cage, Marvel and Netflix's latest entry in their ever-expanding television universe, is almost upon us. Much like Jessica Jones before, Luke's background isn't as commonly known as many of the other heroes on the Marvel roster. Many would be surprised to learn that "Luke Cage" isn't even the character's birth name. Here's what you need to know about the character before you dive into the show on Friday.

Growing up in Harlem, Carl Lucas and his friend Willis Stryker are both gang members who commit petty crimes. As he becomes an adult, Lucas begins resenting the pain his behavior is causing his family and others in the community. He turns his back on the crime world and never looks back. Although they remain friends, Stryker continues to climb the ranks of organized crime. The mob eventually puts a hit out on Stryker, who is only saved when Lucas gets involved. After this incident, Stryker's girlfriend, Reva Connors, breaks up with him out of fear of the violent work he continues to be involved with. Connors seeks comfort in Lucas, leading Stryker to blame him for the end of their relationship.

Stryker steals heroin from the drug kingpin Cornell Cottonmouth (played by Mahershala Ali in the series) and plants it in Lucas' apartment. Once he finishes, he tips off the police and Lucas is sent to prison. Furious at his friend's betrayal, Lucas would frequently get into fights with other inmates. He is eventually transferred to Seagate Prison and attracts the attention of an abusive guard named Albert "Billy Bob" Rackham. Rackham would constantly bully and harass the imprisoned Lucas.

Eventually, Lucas is recruited to be a volunteer in an experiment testing a new version of the Super-Soldier Serum, the same one that originally gives Captain America his strength. The scientist performing the experiment, Dr. Noah Burnstein, surrounds a secured Lucas in an electrical field containing an organic chemical compound. Dr. Burnstein leaves for only a moment, and a recently demoted Rackham seizes his opportunity. Turning the controls much higher than intended, he bombards Lucas with the electricity.

It doesn't kill Lucas. Instead, he gains impenetrable skin and the strength to lift 25 tons and punch through 4 inches of steel. He is able to escape the prison and upon doing so adopts the alias "Luke Cage." Shortly after, he establishes himself as a "Hero for Hire" willing to assist those in need - for a price. Jessica Jones doesn't enter his life until well after he is an established hero in the comics. The two have a drunken one-night stand (as seen in Jessica Jones), and shortly thereafter, Jessica lets Luke know that she is pregnant with who would become their daughter, Danielle Jones (not seen in Jessica Jones). They end up getting married and are involved with several different superhero teams over the years.

How closely the Netflix series will stick to this origin story remains to be seen, but a brief clip does show the character emerging from a tank with his original "Power Man" costume's metal cuffs and headband. The show premieres in its entirety on Netflix this Friday.

This New Netflix Documentary Shines a Bright and Shocking Spotlight on Modern Racism

If you couldn't get enough of Netflix's chilling docuseries Making a Murderer, chances are you'll be just as interested in their latest prison documentary. The new original film is called 13TH, and it's produced by Ava DuVernay, who also produced 2014's Selma. 13TH refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which states, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States." The documentary drops Oct. 7, but for now, you can watch the trailer above to see how the amendment served as a catalyst for the horrors of the modern American prison industry and all of the corruption that lies therein.

Indulge in Fall Comfort Foods Without Packing On Pounds: Here's How

So you're on a diet or working toward a weight-loss goal just as we're heading into the holiday season and arguably the best food-flavor season: Fall. No pumpkin pie? No mashed potatoes? How will anyone survive?

Don't freak out, because you can absolutely partake in the food festivities of the season. Alexandra Miller, RDN, LDN, corporate dietitian at Medifast, gave us some tips on how to totally indulge and enjoy delicious Fall foods and flavors without wrecking our weight-loss progress. Take notes, friends.

Focus on fruits and veggies.

"Fall flavors come in many forms beyond pie and stuffing." Try the fruits and veggies of the season - naturally low in calories and "packed with health-promoting nutrients, including dietary fiber, a nutrient that helps fill us up, stabilize blood sugar levels, and promote optimal digestion," Miller said in an email to POPSUGAR. She suggests adding produce into each meal and gave some great examples on how to do so.

  • Add pumpkin puree to chili.
  • Throw slices of pear into a grilled cheese.
  • Toss some chopped apple and pomegranate seeds on salads.
  • Stuff acorn or butternut squash with lean turkey sausage and apples.
  • Spiralize sweet potatoes or try spaghetti squash in place of pasta (she noted that a cup of spaghetti squash has 40 calories and a cup of spaghetti has 220 calories).
  • Grate cauliflower and use it to make pizza crusts or tortillas.
  • Bake apples (cored; peeled, optional).
  • Stew pears with cinnamon and serve with low-fat vanilla yogurt for a healthy dessert option.

Modify your favorites

You don't have to sacrifice traditional favorites when you cook them yourself - just modify the recipe and make it healthier according to your needs.

"Love pumpkin pie? Make your own crust-less version," she said. "In the mood for chili? Use lean ground turkey, pumpkin puree, tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, and all of your favorite chili spices; top with plain Greek yogurt, chopped scallions, and/or slices of avocado. Baking something? Add pureed butternut squash, cranberries, or shredded apple for an extra boost of fiber."

Choose wisely

You don't have to deprive yourself completely, but focus on portion control. "Only splurge on a small serving of something that is truly worth it, like your mom's homemade pumpkin bread," she said. "Don't waste calories on anything that isn't extraordinary."

Miller also noted the importance of controlling portions and to try to avoid eating second helpings. "Use small plates (perhaps an appetizer or dessert plate) and at lunch and dinner, fill half of your plate with non-starchy vegetables and a third with lean protein." She also noted that you should "eat food slowly so that your body can register when it is full."

Another portion-control technique? Make foods smaller. Her examples:

  • Sliders instead of full-size burgers.
  • Meatloaf muffins instead of a whole meatloaf.
  • Pumpkin mini muffins instead of pumpkin bread (using a mini muffin tin).

Another delicious recipe suggestion: make burgers with lean ground turkey and fresh cranberries. For meatloaf, Miller suggests adding pumpkin puree in with lean ground beef or turkey.

Enjoy a cup of joe

"Pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin coffee . . . it can be hard to resist!" she said. Miller cited the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans: three to five eight-ounce cups of coffee per day can be incorporated into a healthy diet. She noted that this amount of coffee isn't dangerous, nor has it been "associated with an increased risk of major chronic disease, like cancer or cardiovascular disease." But wait, there's more.

"In fact, it may even help stabilize blood sugar levels and reduce cravings." Wait, did she just say . . . reduce cravings?! Pour another cup! "The key is to keep your coffee free of added sugars, syrups, and cream. Avoid high-calorie specialty drinks, and stick with plain coffee and a splash of non-fat milk or unsweetened almond milk."

Still need some PSL flavor? Miller told us to try pumpkin spice coffee - hold the syrup - or add a little pumpkin spice to your coffee grounds before you brew.

Zoom In on Jennifer Aniston's Necklace, and You'll Definitely Get the Message

While some might count evil-eye jewelry as a trend, it probably means a lot to the wearer. And while there are plenty of stylish designs - Jennifer Aniston's necklace included - many cultures view the symbol as protection or a curse. Of course, we don't know exactly what message Jen is sending with hers. From a style perspective, the piece just looks plain cool with a pair of boyfriend jeans, Gucci loafers, and a ribbed tank. But perhaps Jen didn't just choose her pendant because it brings out the blue shade of her denim.

With all the talk in the media about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's divorce, many are turning to Jen, Brad's ex. If we didn't know any better, we'd guess Jen's jewels say, "I'm just living my life." Simple and smart, just like the rest of her outfit. Read on to see it from all angles, then shop for an evil eye of your own. Whether you put it on for armor or just because you like it, it's clearly an eye-catching touch.

Taylor Swift's New Haircut Proves That the Shag Is Here to Stay

Hillary Clinton's Amazing Response to a Girl Who Wants to Change Her Name to "Lillary"

In what little free time she has in between preparing for the upcoming debates and, you know, running for president, Hillary Clinton responded to a seven-year-old, Lilly, with her own big dreams.

Lilly's mom, Jennifer Rosen Heinz, initially wrote to Hillary after her daughter expressed a hilarious desire to change her name to "Lillary." The response she got will likely be stuck on the fridge for quite some time.

In it, Hillary said she was touched by Lilly's idea, however, urged her to stay true to herself. She said, "I hope you know that you don't have to change it to become president; if you dream big, work hard, and care deeply about what you believe in, there's no limit to what you can achieve."

Hillary then encouraged Lilly to make her voice heard at school and, eventually, in the workplace. "If the space you're in doesn't have room for your voice, don't be afraid to carve out a space of your own," she wrote. Hillary ended the letter by suggesting that Lilly could very well be the next woman president - that is, of course, if Hillary becomes the first.

All the Ladies Who Have Been Romanced by Brad Pitt

Before Brad Pitt's divorce from Angelina Jolie, the father of six seemed to have left his past as one of Hollywood's hottest bachelors behind him. Whether or not Brad actually had a serious relationship with these leading ladies is something only he could tell you, but regardless, take a look inside the Allied actor's little black book to see who has been lucky enough to have (supposedly) fallen under his spell.

Our favorite surgeons are back on new episodes of Grey's Anatomy, but everything is far from OK. Alex is arrested for beating up DeLuca to a bloody pulp and Jo is barely hanging on from Alex's attack, but one of the biggest takeaways from the premiere is that Maggie and Meredith are eventually going to war this season.

The seed for this conflict is planted last season: Meredith and Nathan sleep together four times in just one night. Meredith is definitely on cloud nine afterward until she stands next to Maggie at the altar of Amelia's wedding. There, Maggie lets it slip that she's definitely into Nathan . . . who is awkwardly staring at Meredith. But their conflict is not just over a boy. In the premiere, we see Meredith pretty much try to cover for Alex until she realizes he has to come clean about beating DeLuca. In doing so, she lies to everyone - including Maggie. When the truth comes out, it's obvious that Maggie is hurt by the betrayal. She tells Meredith that she doesn't treat her like a sister, and she kind of has a point.

Maggie has made huge strides to become closer to Meredith. She helps take care of her kids and loves them to the point where she is genuinely freaked out by it. She has been an open book about every aspect of her life, but Meredith is preoccupied with pretty much everyone else and Maggie seems like an afterthought to her. We all know that Meredith typically likes to keep one person as "her person," and that involves many things. We have seen this get her into trouble by relying too much on Cristina and not enough on Derek, but years later she is still struggling.

After Cristina leaves, she clings on to Alex as her new "person." This involves long talks and a lot of energy that even Jo isn't exactly OK with. We get that Alex is one of her oldest friends who has been there from the very beginning, but it's time to question whether Meredith putting him first (before Maggie) is the right thing. Why can't Maggie be her new confidant instead? They do live in the same house, so it makes the late-night talks more appropriate. It's obvious that Maggie wants this type of relationship with Meredith, but Mer isn't willing to make her a priority. She also has shown that even though she promises to not lie, she is going to continue to do so.

Back to the premiere: Nathan comes over to their house, and Meredith talks with him privately outside. She tells him once again they can't be together because someone will get hurt. After he leaves, she comes back inside and lies about who was at the door when Maggie directly asks about it.

The question is, why? Is she doing it in order to save Maggie's feelings from being rejected by Nathan? It's possible, but knowing Mer, this definitely isn't the only thing at play. She loves pushing people away. Last season in therapy she talks about being very good at being alone because of all the people who have left her throughout her life, including Derek, her mother, and Lexie. Chances are she is pushing Nathan away because she is scared of getting close to another person and using Maggie as an excuse. Sadly, she's also pushing Maggie away too, whether she realizes it or not.

She's doing herself a disservice. Nathan could potentially be a good fit for her. He is handsome, can understand her loss due to his own ex's death, and seems to really want to be with her. She's also ready to move on. She has mourned, gone through therapy, and taken some time to be by herself. Maybe their relationship won't end with wedding bells, but she should see where it goes.

Meredith choosing to be with Nathan might hurt Maggie, but it won't last forever. Maggie simply has a crush on him with no prospect of it going anywhere. The quicker she breaks the news, the quicker everyone can move on. The most important thing is that Meredith starts taking real effort to have a true sisterhood with Maggie and not just rely on her to babysit her kids when she needs it. Meredith needs to get over having one "person" and truly let Maggie in by being fully honest and spending time with her.

So can these two sisters survive all of this lying and distance? Chances are good that there will be war before there will be peace. Maggie has made it very clear what she will and what she won't accept from Meredith. Meredith has made it clear in her actions that she really doesn't care about any of those things. Once it all comes out, it will have to take a lot of apologizing and work on Meredith's end to make it better. Hopefully by the end of this season they will be able to stop running into the same problems.

After Vitamin Shopping For 45 Minutes, 1 Mom Realized What's Wrong With Modern Parenting

"Being a modern parent is terrible," starts Bunmi Laditan, a mom the internet frequently looks to when they want to keep things real and relatable. "I'd give my left tit to have parented in the '70s or '80s when all you had to do to be considered a good mom is to remember to wind down the windows when you smoke in the car." In a post to her Facebook page, Bunmi continues her rant against the stress that is modern parenting.

Do you know what I've been doing this morning? VITAMIN SHOPPING. For 45 minutes I've been comparing children's vitamins . . . I'd been buying my kids' vitamins at the same place I purchase extension cords and wine coolers, but recently heard that the Disney Pixar Cars gummy vitamins are sugary trash that cause leprosy and ADHD, so now I'm on the market.

Someone told me my kids need fish oils that cost $60. The closest thing I had to fish oils as a child was whatever the Gorton's fisherman caught, breaded, and fried. . . . Now I'm about to spend an electricity bill on vitamins because in 2016 you don't really love your kids if you're not a paranoid mess about their physical well being . . .

Bunmi continues, outlining some of the differences between her childhood and the one she feels she needs to give to her kids due to the nature of modern parenting - especially when other moms seem to be directly pressuring her. "Nothing about modern parenting is simple, and it irritates me. I've seen the way some parents look at me when I give my son a juice box at the park. It's juice, not Red Bull or margarita mix, so calm down, Jackie. Yes, I said your name."

Although she starts on the subject of vitamins, she finishes her post on a completely different note, because another component of modern parenting is that it never, ever ends. "If you need me, I'll be in front of my computer crying bitter tears and searching for phthalate-free bubble bath. I don't even know what a phthalate is."

Neither do we, Bunmi. Neither do we.

When a Boy Lost His Lego Figurine, the Customer Service Team Decided to Make the World a Better Place

I grew up playing with Legos, and as a mildly obsessive-compulsive child who would diligently store each block by size and color, it's no small wonder that losing a prized piece was nothing short of a monumental, life-altering disappointment. So you can imagine my empathy when I heard that a 7-year-old boy named Luka lost his favorite Lego figurine. It's a painful life lesson, or so I thought.

Turns out, if you just write a heartfelt letter to Lego's customer service department, magic invariably happens.

That's what seems to be the only explanation behind the interaction Scott Kerr shared on Twitter:

Not only did the Lego representative give Luka a replacement (and then some), but he also backed up the boy's dad and made sure an important lesson was learned about keeping Lego figurines safe at home.

Attention Lego Corporate: if you can kindly give Richard from your customer service team a giant raise, we'd all greatly appreciate it.

Is Almond Milk Actually Good For You?

If cutting dairy out of your diet is a priority, you've likely been evaluating all sorts of alternatives. Which is the best plant-based milk, and which ones are actually good for you? Milk is a great source of protein and natural, bioavailable calcium - but so many people can't digest lactose or are simply turning to plant-based diets.

Let's take a look at one of the most popular choices: almond milk. The nutty flavor has been such a favorite by so many dairy-free dieters that Starbucks and many coffee chains have added it to their menus.

It's important to know that a lot of what you get at the grocery store is not just plain almonds and water. Oftentimes there are stabilizers and gums that go into giving this "mylk" a longer shelf life and a more milk-like consistency. Not that those ingredients are necessarily harmful, but they're important to note if you're on a particular diet that eliminates processed food or if you have certain food sensitivities.

Whether or not the stuff is actually "healthy" seems to be up for debate, but it doesn't seem all that harmful either. Let's take a look.

A few benefits of almond milk:

  • It's low calorie. Compared to whole milk, one cup plain unsweetened almond milk has one-fifth the total calories (30 vs. 150). If you're limiting your intake or looking for simple swaps to cut calories, this can be a great method of doing so. If you're going for the sweetened vanilla variety, one serving measures in at 90 calories, which equates to a glass of skim milk.
  • No soy. If you're dairy-free and soy-free, this is an excellent alternative to keep creamy "milk" in your diet.
  • No sugar. The plain, unsweetened variety brings zero sugar to the table, meaning you're cutting out even more from your diet with a simple swap.

Potential drawbacks of almond milk:

  • Low protein. With one gram of protein per serving, you're missing out on dairy's eight grams of muscle-nourishing, satiating protein.
  • No natural calcium. And the vitamins included are typically supplements. Silk and Califia add a "vitamin and mineral blend" to theirs, while Blue Diamond adds its own blend of calcium and minerals. Additionally, many studies are saying calcium supplements aren't actually good for you.
  • It's processed food. If you're avoiding processed foods, the store-bought stuff is not for you, because as previously mentioned, it's chock-full of additives, and not "just almonds." The only away around this (beyond making your own) is buying an expensive, pure brand from a natural market.

What it comes down to is your dietary needs. If you're lactose intolerant or vegan, sure, you might miss out on some protein, calcium, and vitamin D from regular milk, but you can get more protein from other sources in your diet. The only big drawback to almond milk is that most store-bought varieties are heavily processed and fortified with supplements. Love almond milk but don't want to risk it? Make your own almond milk at home, and control exactly what goes in your body.

The Fashion-Based Theory From The Walking Dead That No One Is Talking About

We'll have to wait until October for The Walking Dead to return, but that won't stop us from trying to solve every mystery from the show - including ones we discover all on our own, after hours of binge-watching the suspenseful series. For instance: have you noticed that the majority of female walkers roam around in maxi dresses? What's the deal there? Was there a shortage of pants before this virus spread, forcing them to rock the next-best comfy staple? We really need to know!

In reality, it's probably easier for the costume department to rip up and "walker-fy" a single piece rather than a full outfit. But we'll still hold out hope that one day, our question will be explained. Until then, take a look at the maxis taking over this apocalyptic world. Then see what life was like before walkers were everywhere.

Why iPhone 7 Users Should Temporarily Avoid Airplane Mode

Owners of Apple's latest iPhone 7 are experiencing an unfortunate glitch that significantly diminishes their cell service after switching airplane mode on and then off. In many cases, cell service is completely down for some time after switching off the airplane mode setting.

According to MacRumors, Apple is reportedly investigating the glitch. The company, however, has helpful information on what to do if you've experienced this problem before or are currently: restart your device, take out your SIM card, reset your network settings, and more.

In the meantime, you should probably avoid airplane mode altogether if you're an owner of the brand-new phone. But, if you encounter this glitch, you might get a replacement phone, reports MacRumors.

In addition to the cell service issue, other people are observing a faint hissing sound that the phone emits when it's overloaded. The complaint has resulted in its very own hashtag, #HissGate. It's another reason you should maybe consider keeping your current iPhone and try a different new Apple product instead.
