Expert Tips For Managing Stress Every Day, Everywhere

The bad news? There's no way to really "get rid of" stress. The good news? You can manage it, and one "stress expert," Dr. Pete Sulack, doctor of chiropractic, has a method for it.

"Stress isn't just drama or deadlines," said stress expert Dr. Sulack. "It's total toxic body burden, and it's a byproduct of living in our modern world." And while he emphasized that eliminating stress is impossible, he talked about a principle he applies to it to keep it in check.

"I can't emphasize enough the importance of counterbalance. You can't avoid stress, but you can counterbalance it with these steps."

Get ready to get happy and find more balance in your life by deepening connections, getting proper nutrition, resting, working out, detoxing, aligning, feeling grateful, and giving back. Apply any and all of these - even in simple ways - to your everyday life to start feeling less overwhelmed.

Connection

Dr. Sulack's first principle involves reclaiming your connection with other people, with nature, and with yourself. Do you feel disconnected and isolated at times? Too immersed in technology? He suggests counterbalancing with the following:

  • "Real, soulful connections with friends, family, or neighbors." Call a friend you haven't talked to in a while. Get coffee with your mom or go on a walk with your significant other. Say hi to your neighbors or co-workers more often!
  • Go outside! He told us that research shows that even spending one minute outside can improve your mood and outlook, and that spending time in nature can lower blood pressure.
  • Reflect on your purpose. Take time to evaluate what is important to you, who you are, and what you want out of life, even if that means a few minutes on the subway or during your commute. Dr. Sulack said this will "provide a true north that helps you chart through often perilous waters."

Nutrition

Food can play a key factor in stress levels. Dr. Sulack suggests adopting a "clean, organic, and unprocessed diet" that "gives your body and brain the nutrients to thrive." His rule of thumb? "If it comes from a plant, eat it. If it's made in a plant, just don't."

We'd also suggest considering adding omega-3s, B vitamins, and magnesium into your diet to get some relaxing, healing benefits.

Rest

Dr. Sulack says most of us are "tired but wired" when we're feeling stressed. He noted that getting more sleep is a key to counterbalancing stress. Try setting up a bedtime routine to get ready for a more restful slumber, or trying a sleep-aiding app.

Movement

So, this might be our favorite tip. "Most Americans feel the backaches, tension headaches, and sluggishness that come along with a sedentary lifestyle," he told us. "Regular functional and fun movement, like sports, swimming, walking, bicycling, and dancing, counterbalance the stress of the hours you spend in an office chair, the car, and on the couch."

So you know what that means . . . it's time to move! Add some more fitness into your daily routine to counterbalance general stress. If you're feeling overwhelmed when you're at work, try going for a walk (and going outside to connect with nature!) or finding a place to do some crunches, push-ups, or simple no-equipment exercise moves.

Detoxification

Because stress can be a constant and "under stress, the body becomes deficient and toxic," Dr. Sulack says we must detoxify the body daily. Here are some tips he suggests:

  • Oil pulling
  • Eating veggies (which "boosts glutathione")
  • Hot baths
  • Massages
  • Drinking half your weight in ounces of filtered water (i.e., if you're 150 lbs., drink 75 ounces of water)
  • Sweating (yay, exercise!)
  • Using essential oils

Alignment

This principle applies to your physical and mental state. "Making life choices that aren't in alignment with our highest vision and deepest values causes undue psychic and spiritual stress." Are you doing things that are true to your character and what you believe in? Dr. Sulack believes that "making choices that carry out the vision for your life" is one way to counterbalance stress. Get back in touch with what you want, what your goals are, and what you believe - and stick to it!

In terms of physical alignment, Dr. Sulack - a chiropractor himself - described spinal adjustments as a way to "stimulate the brain and central nervous system without breaking the 'loop' of stress that travels along the HPA axis (hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal)."

What does that mean? Getting a spinal adjustment will "reduce cortisol" (the stress hormone) and keep your body balanced.

Gratitude

"Cynics have more than a two-and-a-half-times greater risk of developing dementia than those who have gratitude," said Dr. Sulack. Letting go of anger and choosing gratitude is "a proven way to increase vibrational energy and counterbalance the entropy and stress of life!"

Stuck in traffic? A co-worker was unkind to you? Buried in emails and missed calls and you feel like the world is falling down on you? Think of 10 things you're grateful for - and let the stress melt away.

Generosity

"Generosity is the capstone of all the steps to de-stress," Dr. Sulack told us. It's known as "coping," he said. "We can't get rid of stress, but we can learn to cope with it by counterbalancing its effects."

He cited recent studies about caregivers who gave willingly (at manageable levels) living longer, and those who do more for others experience more happiness and joy. "Joy is the highest vibrational energy, and with it comes many health and wellness benefits."

Generosity comes in many forms - giving a ride to a co-worker, helping a neighbor take out the trash, giving a sandwich to someone who is homeless. Start small! Give a little bit, gain a lot.

Tata Harper's Holistic Gift Guide Picks Will Help You De-Stress This Season

This holiday season, POPSUGAR Beauty tapped some of our favorite influencers, including popular brand owners, bloggers, pros, and celebrities, to share the gifts they would like to receive or give. Find more gifting inspiration here.

When it comes to natural beauty, Tata Harper leads the pack. Her eponymous brand of holistic skin care products is handmade on her farm in Vermont and has grown a cult following. First of all, the products smell and feel amazing (super botanical and fresh!), and as a user, I can attest that they actually work.

Since Tata has such great advice - such as when to toss expired products or how to curate a less-toxic skin care routine - we asked her for holiday shopping advice.

"Getting gifts for friends can be a lot of fun, but can definitely be challenging," Tata said. "When I'm looking for gifts, I think about my friends' interests, so I can give them something that really feels special and like it was selected just for them. I usually look for things they wouldn't necessarily buy for themselves, things that will make them feel good, that will pamper them, or products that will help make their lives better or easier. When it comes to wellness-related gifts, I focus on things that will give peace of mind, since most people are trying to find what's right for them and are looking for tips or guidance."

Here, she rounded up her holistic gift-giving picks for the holiday season.

Hillary Clinton's Worn Many Colors, but Today She Chose Purple

When Hillary Clinton arrived at the New Yorker Hotel to deliver her concession speech, she had a smile on her face. She stood with confidence in front of the podium, painting a picture of what she hopes young girls will remember as perseverance. While she has been recognized for her fashion choices during the course of the election - most notably the white pantsuit she wore to the DNC, which conjured images of the women's suffragist uniforms - none is so important as this one.

The purple lapels on Hillary's satin blazer matched her glow and were, most simply, pleasant to look at. Bill Clinton and Tim Kaine followed suit in coordinated ties. But consider the color purple: a shade that has signified wisdom, creativity, peace, ambition, independence, and, most importantly, unity. It is the mixture of red and blue, which represent the Republican and Democratic parties, respectively.

Purple was the perfect backdrop for Hillary's message:

"We have seen that our nation is more deeply divided than we thought, but I still believe in America and I always will. If you do, then we must accept this result and then look to the future. Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead."

In a purple outfit, Hillary did offer us the chance to grieve (or to take the time to process this election news) but not the chance to give up or to forget that we are a united nation that fails without support. In fact, we're sure she would have worn the exact same blazer if she'd been delivering an acceptance speech. Since day one, Hillary has stood for harmony, after all.

After encouraging women to show up to the polls in her iconic pantsuit and sporting the three separate colors of the country's flag for various appearances, Hillary dazzled us when we needed it most. She reminded young girls they are "deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve [their dreams]." That little sentiment was memorable, magical, and undeniably bold, and when she delivered it, Hillary spoke with optimism and maintained the image of hope. If only for 10 minutes, the color purple helped her achieve that.

2016 Is the Year Emoji Took Over the Internet

Emoji enthusiasts, we feel ya. The day new emoji grace our phone keyboards is like your birthday, Christmas, and your wedding day all wrapped into one. For us, the taco emoji was life changing, and we can't freaking wait to use the bacon and avocado emoji. Then again, some of us purists won't even update at all because we want to remember the peach emoji for what it really is: a symbol for the butt. Whatever your thoughts on emoji are, it's clear that these tiny little images help us express ourselves and matter more than we give them credit.

The importance of emoji was a topic several panels addressed at the first-ever EmojiCon in San Francisco, where plenty of discussions explored how emoji matter to us in different ways. For some people, it's about representation and inclusion. For others, it means knowing how certain emoji are used in different contexts. Though emoji have existed since 1999, this is the year that people questioned the ones we have - and the ones we don't.

People came up with new emoji ideas based on what was missing.

Take a look at the emoji keyboard and you'll find several that are either men- or women-specific only. Or, worse, you won't find the emoji you wanted to use to represent what you were thinking about yourself. It's why Google helped draft a proposal around professional women emoji in May and why 15-year-old Rayouf Alhumedhi, submitted a proposal for a hijab emoji in September. "If there are four emoji, four spaces on the keyboard reserved for the four stages of a mailbox, then why on earth isn't there one for the 500 million hijbabi women," said Alhumedhi at a panel about the hijab emoji. A similar question came up for the dumpling emoji, different skin tone emoji, and definitely more that we have yet to talk or think about. It may feel trivial, but if you can't see yourself in the emoji you use, it makes you feel left out.

We found new ways to use emoji in different contexts and mourned the death of one.

When Apple unveiled how emoji would look like in iOS 10.2, one reaction was immediate: people were upset that the peach emoji no longer looked like a butt. See, to some people, the peach emoji was a butt, whereas others just saw it as fruit.

In another example, some people use the coffee cup and frog emoji to represent the "That's None of My Business" meme. "When they put the coffee in and the frog in, I'm pretty sure they didn't intend for them to be combined that way, but here we are," said Latoya Peterson, deputy editor of digital innovation for ESPN's The Undefeated, at a panel about shade and emoji. Emoji don't have just one singular meaning - they have several as you look at them in certain contexts.

People let emoji continue important conversations.

Twitter, known already as a social media site where hashtags and movements begin, knows the power that emoji hold. It's why when the company created Twitter emoji, it open-sourced the code and made it possible to create a custom emoji. If you're a company or movement that wants to see a certain type of emoji on Twitter, you don't need to go through the complicated process of submitting a proposal and waiting months to see it live. Instead, one can be created and go next to a certain hashtag like the three fists in #BlackLivesMatter. Emoji can help represent a movement, a general sentient, and more.

We can still keep improving the emoji that exist.

Asking for new emoji - whether it was the taco back in the day or the hijab now - is important because the mechanisms around how emoji are chosen is not neutral. Kate Miltner, a PhD student and researcher, spoke about how the International Organization for Standardization and the Unicode Consortium wanted to keep politics out of emoji. But, as we've seen more conversations around emoji happen, it's clear that you need to think about these politics and what emoji say subtly.

Whether you use emoji to talk eggplants and peaches, or to express your identity (or both, really), it's necessary to continue talking about inclusivity.

"Even though emoji are a very small example, it's still critical to note the importance of representation because of the fact that each and everyone one of us is different," said Alhumedhi. She's right - and emoji are just another way to celebrate those differences.

Some Good News: Catherine Cortez Masto Became the Nation's First-Ever Latina Senator

While Hillary Clinton lost the presidential race to Donald Trump on the evening of Nov. 8, another woman is making headlines for becoming the first Latina to be elected to the Senate. In a historic race, Catherine Cortez Masto defeated Congressman Joe Heck to become Nevada's newest senator.

Senator-elect Cortez Masto will be filling Harry Reid's seat, who will now go into retirement. The Mexican-American Democrat had previously been serving as Nevada's Attorney General since 2007. As Attorney General, she cracked down on drug trafficking in the state, as well as the manufacturing of methamphetamines. She also created the Mortgage Fraud Strike Force, which investigates fraudulent foreclosures and housing scams.

In a series of tweets, shown below, Cortez Masto thanked voters for electing her and assured them that she would fight hard against President-elect Trump, ultimately adding that the good fight will begin tomorrow - in Spanish, no less.

This Type of Flaxseed Is Better at Preventing Belly Bloat

Not a fish fan but you know you should be getting your omega-3s? Look to the amazing flaxseed in order to get your daily recommended amount of 1.1 grams. When perusing the aisles of your grocery store, you'll see they come in two forms - whole and ground. Is one more beneficial than the other? The chart below shows how they compare nutritionally.

1 tbsp. whole flaxseed 1 tbsp. ground flaxseed
Calories 55 37
Total Fat (g) 4 3
Saturated Fat (g) 0 0
Carbs (g) 3 2
Fiber (g) 3 2
Protein (g) 2 1
Calcium (mg) 26.1 17.9
Iron (mg) .6 .4
Omega-3s (g) 2.3 1.6
Omega-6s (g) .6 .4
Folate (mcg) 8.9 6.1

As you can see, they're pretty similar, but it's recommended to consume ground flaxseed because whole flaxseeds just pass right through the body undigested. Eating ground flaxseed allows your body to get the omegas as well as the phytochemicals called lignans, which may have antioxidant actions and may help protect against certain cancers. What about flaxseed oil, you ask? It also contains omegas and lignans, but it has no fiber, so go for the ground flaxseed to keep you regular and to help prevent bloating caused by constipation.

Since the RDI of omega-3s is 1.1 grams a day, just one tablespoon of ground flaxseed added to your smoothie, oatmeal, cereal, or sprinkled in your soup or on your salad is way more than enough. You can also bake with it as an egg substitute in recipes like this protein banana bread.

Amid Election Results, Canada's Immigration Website Is Down

As the election results roll in, people are starting to freak out about Donald Trump becoming the next president. The anxiety is so high that Canada's immigration website is down for some people.

We tested it ourselves and found it down.

Others are finding it working - but very slowly. Either way, if you're looking into moving out of America, you might find yourself not seeing fast results.

J.K. Rowling Sums Up How We're All Feeling Tonight in 1 Tweet

As the US and the world await the result of the election, J.K. Rowling took a moment to reflect - and totally captured how we're all feeling tonight.

Rowling, who's been no fan of Donald Trump through the election, voiced some hopeful thoughts.

Some people thanked Rowling for her support and thoughts throughout the election.

The tweet has more than 13,000 retweets and 33,000 likes and will probably gain more as the night continues.

A Sad Reminder That Puerto Ricans Can't Vote in the Election

Did you know that Puerto Rican residents are not able to vote in US elections despite the nation being a commonwealth of the United States? Well, did you know that even American citizens just temporarily living in Puerto Rico aren't allowed to vote? A recent video is breaking down the senseless rule and it's pretty enraging.

In a video for Mic, producer Gabe Gonzalez shared his mom's particularly frustrating experience with this double-standard. See, Gabe's mom is a citizen who has paid taxes and voted in the 2008 presidential election. In this coming election, however, she is unable to vote because she currently resides in Puerto Rico.

As Gabe explains in the video, Puerto Rico is a commonwealth, meaning its citizens are born with American citizenship and are subject to the same laws - the only difference being they can't vote for elected officials. Gabe added, "Puerto Ricans don't even have representation in Congress. Well, they do - they're 'representative' just can't vote for anything."

While total independence might not be the solution, as the video states, it's clear that a large faction of Latinx citizens have been ignored for some time and will continue to be this election.

At this year's LeakyCon, a Harry Potter convention that took place in Burbank, CA, I attended a gathering called Everlasting Ink: The Potter Tattoo Meetup. I expected it to be all about people showing each other their Harry Potter tattoos to share ideas and inspire future ink, but what I wasn't prepared for was an outpouring of beautiful stories. Men and women bravely spoke about personal struggles, what they've overcome in their lives, and the lost loved ones who inspired their tattoos. Keep reading for some of these moving stories in addition to other fans' creative Harry Potter tattoos.

Snapchat's New Feature Will Make Your Stories Insanely More Fun to Do

With Snapchat's newest feature, you can turn your world into a trippy reality. The app's latest update unveiled seven new lenses that use augmented reality.

The filters, called "World Lenses," use augmented reality and your rear-facing camera to turn your home, office, or wherever you are into a new world. Usually, a filter will just stay on your face or wherever you took the video. But, with these new lenses, if you point your camera upwards, you'll see more playful animations or illustrations.

The update is now available on iOS and Android. It also includes the option to use lenses while video chatting and send a story to a friend.

Ahead, see how to use and what fun you can have with it. Your move next, Instagram stories!

Why You Should Never Use Coffee For This Beauty DIY

Coffee is so much more than a morning pick-me-up. Beauty insiders know that the grounds can be used for everything from crafting a DIY soap to exfoliating away rough skin, but despite its versatility, there's one treatment they shouldn't be used for: hair coloring. Recipes are spreading across the internet touting the ingredient as a safe, natural dye, but some professional colorists are skeptical.

"Coffee is meant to be ingested," Rita Hazan, celebrity colorist and owner of Rita Hazan Salon, told POPSUGAR over email. "There are better alternatives to coloring your hair such as using vegetable dyes or henna, which are also natural."

Other pros use the beverage for this unexpected beauty hack, but only in conjunction with other methods. Master colorist and cofounder of Spoke & Weal salons Christine Thompson has used coffee to tint strands by blending it with henna. Instead of using water to turn henna powder into a pigmented paste, you mix in hot coffee.

"Both the temperature and the acid helps the henna to adhere," she told POPSUGAR via email. She wouldn't recommend using it as a standalone hair color, though. "I have not seen this work for gray coverage. It is not dark enough to deepen brunettes," Thompson said. "The effects are essentially minimal until washed or wiped off." Think about it: even if you spill coffee on a white shirt, the stain will still come out pretty easily in the wash, meaning that any color will be just as temporary in your hair.

Using coffee on light strands is especially a bad idea. "It will most likely make blond hair a muddy color," Hazan warned. Instead, try a product that was actually developed to add a brunette tint. Hazan likes her Ultimate Shine Gloss in Brown ($26), which adds dimension to deeper strands. If you're looking for a natural solution, Aveda offers a line of organic hair dyes that are free of parabens and petroleum-based chemicals but also gentle on your strands, so your color will last longer.

If you're still hellbent on incorporating coffee into your color regimen, you can try Thompson's henna method, but note that henna will permanently stain your hair. "If you have hair darkened with henna, it is very difficult to lighten," she cautioned. "If you frequently color your hair, I would stay away from henna."

The Horrifying News About "Super Acne" and What It Could Mean For Your Skin

Talk about the worst superpower ever. According to a recent study released at the British Association of Dermatologists' Annual Conference, "super acne" is a challenging new concern plaguing breakout-prone complexions.

Much like the deadly MRSA strain of staph, super acne is resistant to treatment. "Since the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes is implicated in acne development, antibiotics are commonly prescribed for treatment," Dr. Neil Sadick of Sadick Dermatology explained to POPSUGAR via email. "However, new findings show that p. acnes is capable of evading destruction by common antibiotics."

Scarily enough, this kind of genetic mutation occurs when bacteria is exposed to antibiotics for extended periods of time. By evolving and adapting to the harsh conditions of medication, the bacteria can survive - and thrive - leaving you with seriously stubborn acne.

Your doctor will know if you're dealing with super acne after just a few months of treatment. "If your dermatologist has prescribed antibiotics and there is no improvement after three months, your acne is mostly likely drug-resistant," Sadick remarked. But it's not hopeless. Not only is it worth trying a different antibiotic (like switching from tetracycline to erythromycin), but there are also other complexion-clearing alternatives.

Dr. Sadick first suggested salicylic acid, which can be found in many over-the-counter spot treatments. "It can exfoliate and remove dead skin cells inside the pore," he noted, "allowing secretion of excess sebum and reduction of redness and irritation." For this reason, this treatment is best for blackheads, red spots, and oily skin. We're big fans of Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2 Percent BHA Liquid ($29), which absorbs quickly after application and reduces enlarged pores.

Should your blemishes be connected to your hormones, spironolactone is another option. "It has been shown to reduce hormone-dependent increases in sebum that lead to acne and can improve the condition within three months," he said. However, this oral medication requires a prescription and should be taken only under the care of a doctor.

Sadick is also fond of benzoyl peroxide, which he says can improve your skin in just a few weeks of use. The antiseptic ingredient "injects air into the pore," decongesting your skin while reducing redness and skin soreness. "It has been used successfully in combination with antibiotics, and has been shown to increase their effectiveness by not allowing p. acnes to transform into resistant super acne," he shared. Clinique Acne Solutions Emergency Gel-Lotion ($18) contains this ingredient, and according to Sephora reviews, it can "kill" cysts overnight.

Consult with a doctor on which treatment is right for your skin, but don't let your acne make you feel hopeless! Discover more of our breakout-related content here.
