Some Good News: Catherine Cortez Masto Became the Nation's First-Ever Latina Senator
While Hillary Clinton lost the presidential race to Donald Trump on the evening of Nov. 8, another woman is making headlines for becoming the first Latina to be elected to the Senate. In a historic race, Catherine Cortez Masto defeated Congressman Joe Heck to become Nevada's newest senator.
Senator-elect Cortez Masto will be filling Harry Reid's seat, who will now go into retirement. The Mexican-American Democrat had previously been serving as Nevada's Attorney General since 2007. As Attorney General, she cracked down on drug trafficking in the state, as well as the manufacturing of methamphetamines. She also created the Mortgage Fraud Strike Force, which investigates fraudulent foreclosures and housing scams.
In a series of tweets, shown below, Cortez Masto thanked voters for electing her and assured them that she would fight hard against President-elect Trump, ultimately adding that the good fight will begin tomorrow - in Spanish, no less.
I'm proud to be Nevada's 1st female and our nation's 1st Latina senator. It's about time our government mirrors the diversity of our nation.

Our government is based on a system of checks and balances. And trust me, I will be one hell of a check on Donald Trump.
