After salons introduced us to the balayage dye method, we never looked back. The technique - which consists of actually painting color onto hair - is the most low-maintenance way to achieve sun-kissed strands. Because the style doesn't result in harsh lines of demarcation (like classic highlights might), color fades evenly as your hair grows out.

That means that if you're looking to join Team Unicorn, balayage should definitely be in your rainbow hair arsenal. We've rounded up 50 of our favorite dye jobs that are the perfect marriage of balayage and rich, vibrant hues. Read on to see some inspirational and colorful coifs . . . arranged in ROYGBIV order, of course.

The Beautiful Essay Michael Phelps Penned For Katie Ledecky Is a Must Read

EspnW just released its annual IMPACT25 list, and it should come to no one's surprise that swimmer Katie Ledecky is on there. The annual list celebrates the 25 women who have had the greatest impact on sports for the year, and unless you were asleep during the Summer Olympics, you know that Ledecky deserves a spot on that list. Ledecky picked up five medals during the Games, setting two world records along the way.

In honor of Ledecky's addition to the IMPACT25 list, teammate Michael Phelps penned an essay for espnW, and just like the rest of us, Phelps is a dumbstruck fan in awe of the 19-year-old's talent. The essay is even more poignant when you consider that it was just 10 years ago when a smiling 9-year-old Ledecky waited in line to have Phelps autograph a poster and snap a photo with her.

Read it in its entirety here:

When you compete in something as long as I have - remember, I swam in my first Olympics before I was old enough to drive - you see just about everything. The aging superstar chasing one more Olympic gold, the teenage record holder who everyone believes is the next big thing. Some succeed. Most fail. Maybe they're not good enough, don't want to put in the work, or don't care about winning enough to truly push their body to its limit.

And then there's Katie Ledecky. It was two years before the 2012 London Games when I first started paying attention to her. Every time she got in the water, it didn't matter what time of year it was, how rested she was, where she was swimming, who she was swimming against - she was cranking best times, national records. It was incredible. I remember thinking, this girl might be the real deal.

But I wanted to see it on the big, big stage. Could she do it in the Olympics?

In London, Katie was just 15 years old - the same age I was at my first Olympics in Sydney. She was quiet, kind of kept to herself. But on the final day of competition, in the 800 freestyle, she won gold by more than four seconds. I won gold in the 100 fly earlier that night and had just received my medal when Katie's event began. As I was walking through the interview area, reporters began asking me questions that I didn't even answer. Instead, I pointed to the monitor where Katie was crushing it.

This past summer in Rio, she backed it up with four more golds. Right now, she's untouchable. There are swimmers who might push her, but no one is going to beat her. I remember what that feeling was like; it's a great place to be. You know that if you put in the work, the reward is going to be there at the end. The challenge becomes longevity. How long can you keep it up?

But no one is better prepared for this than Katie. She's that much better than everybody else. When I watch her swim, it's like an art. It's beautiful. She maximizes her distance per stroke. It's just something you don't see in swimming. Beyond that, she's one of the hardest-working people I've ever seen in training camp. She will swim with the guys and make them look like they're standing still. I did a set with her once in Colorado Springs, Colorado, at the Olympic Training Center. We were supposed to go together, but I was thrilled when she decided to lead a lane because I didn't want to get my ass whipped. She's just special.

And beyond that, mentally, she never lets up. She goes all out the entire race. Her mentality is, "I'm going to crush this field as much as I possibly can." In the first 100 meters, the race is over. Hell, in the first 50 it's over. She makes the statement and then backs it up. It's just so remarkable.

Yet away from the pool, with her teammates, she's as laid back as anyone. She's talking, laughing, messing around. Then she gives a few high-fives, goes out and absolutely destroys the rest of the world. It's amazing to watch. You just don't see people like her in the sport. I know. And for me to have shared part of my career with someone so dominant and dedicated, and yet still so determined, is an honor. I mean it. I'm a fan of this sport as much as anyone. And I can't wait to see what she does next.

See a First Look at Swatches From the Amanda Steele x ColourPop Collaboration

The day after Christmas is usually a drag, but ColourPop is giving you something to look forward to this year: the launch of its collaboration with influencer Amanda Steele on Dec. 26. You likely know Amanda from her YouTube page, MakeupbyMandy24, and she also has over 6.5 million followers across her social media pages.

Amanda is fronting a campaign, which you can see first here, for three collections. This includes three Super Shock Shadows ($5 each). Expect a glittery lavender called Ignition, a shimmery pastel pink titled Steele, and a multicolored glimmering turquoise dubbed Hydroplane. There are also three lip colors ($6 each) with different finishes: Jiffy, a cool-toned pinky nude Ultra Satin Lip; Hack, a warm-toned pink with glitter as part of the Ultra Glossy Lip line; and Chaps, a rich grape Matte Lip.

The biggest launch is the Weekend Warrior matte eye shadow palette ($18). It features a brand-new powder formula for the brand in four shades: Throttle (cool-toned silvery ivory in a Satin finish), Harley (a light muted gray in a Matte finish), Chopper (a deep smoky plum in a Matte finish), and Burnout (a rich deep indigo in a Matte finish).

"People have been asking for pressed powders from us for a long time, like most of new launches, it was based on fan feedback!" cofounder and president of ColourPop Laura Nelson told POPSUGAR via email. "Going into creating powders we stuck with our roots - amazing products at a great price. ColourPop has always been about amazing formulas, using high end pearls and pigments with high payout, all for a price everyone can afford."

According to Nelson, the best way to apply the powders is with brushes "for optimal blending." And her favorite colors right now are Throttle and Harley. "I've been wearing a combo of the four shades almost every day," she added. "It's a new take on a smokey eye and it's a way for me to do something a little outside of my comfort zone with color while still remaining neutral."

Unicorn Toast Is Officially a Thing, and It's Damn Near Perfect

Step aside, avocado toast, there's a new sheriff in town, and it's way more magical. Unicorn toast has officially made its debut, just when we thought the perfect breakfast food didn't exist. If your bland bowl of cereal just isn't cutting it every morning, this is the tasty and colorful solution you've been waiting for.

So how do you make these Instagram-worthy creations? Food stylist and photographer Adeline Waugh, who first graced the foodie world with these toasts, said that no artificial dyes are required to accomplish the toast's vibrant hues.

"I've been trying to incorporate red beets into as many creations as possible, ever since I realized that they can turn just about anything into the most ridiculously beautiful shade of hot pink," she told Teen Vogue. "I was using beet cream cheese to make colorful pink toast, and then it occurred to me that I could probably make additional colors of cream cheese using natural ingredients." The photographer prefers to mix freeze-dried strawberry powder into cream cheese for a light pink color, drops of chlorophyll for a light green, and spirulina powder for light blue. The results are perfectly pastel concoctions that smear together on toast for a magical breakfast treat . . . or, let's be real, a snack you can enjoy any time of the day.

Though Adeline is noted as the founder of this enticing toast trend, she has inspired other adventurous, magic-seeking foodies to try it out as well. Keep reading for some of our favorite unicorn toast snapshots, and try out the recipe yourself to give your Instagram a colorful makeover.

Mom's Emotional Letter on Her Girls' Adoption: "I Don't Love You 'Like You're My Own'"

When Jamie adopted her two youngest daughters and officially expanded her family to six, she commemorated the occasion with a heartfelt letter that explains exactly how much these little ones are loved.

On this day, Jamie cherished the fact that there is no longer a prefix, subtext, or "sort of" to their relationship. "You're not my foster daughter, I don't love you 'like you're my own,'" the mom-of-four shared on her blog, Foster the Family. "Today you are wholly, completely, for forever my daughter."

When the girls were first dropped off at their home, Jamie explained that she and her husband chose to love them like daughters and that they made this decision before they even had a chance to fall in love with them. "But the falling happened. After bursting into our family, you eased into our lives and hearts," Jamie wrote. "The formalities of our state-regulated, court-appointed, 'temporary' relationship faded away. We dropped the 'foster' from your title, and you simply became 'daughter.'"

She then eloquently explained how this day was different than when she birthed her oldest two children. Instead, it felt most similar to when she married their new daddy. "I met him. Then I fell in love with him, knew I would spend the rest of my life with him, and then came the day to make it official," she explained. "Papers were signed, names were changed, ceremonies were had, but I didn't love him any more than I had the day before. He was the same. I was the same. Nothing had changed. But everything had. After that day, we belonged to each other, officially, forever."

As she concluded her monumental note, Jamie vowed to love both girls forever on the day when nothing and yet everything changed.

I believe that, as of today, our family is now complete. That the six of us will be at this "family" thing, just us, forever. As far as I can see, our growing family has finished growing. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe others will join this little unit of ours. But, I know, I know, that no matter what, we are a family now. Forever.

This day, this adoption day, is one of the happiest days of my life. Today, I become your mother. Today, you become my daughter.
Happy Adoption Day, my dear daughter, I love you.

Love,
Mommy

Gigi Hadid Gets Real and Explains Why Society Needs to Stop Calling Her Perfect

Growing up, my mom was constantly telling me "it's what's inside that counts," and I've been carrying that notion with me my entire life. But as the presence of social media permeates our modern-day lives, and airbrushed images have filtered our expectations, it's becoming harder and harder to stress the importance of internal beauty and strength. Gigi Hadid and Reebok are on a mission to change that, to inspire women to embrace their imperfections and simply be the best versions of themselves.

Now, I can confidently say that after hearing Gigi speak at the #PerfectNever revolution, my pre-social media beliefs have been restored. For Gigi, she's more often than not judged on her appearance as a reflection of who she is as a person, but as I said before, it's what's inside that counts. Gigi explained that her character and personality is way more important to her than how the photos from a shoot turned out.

As the 2016 model of the year and one of the most recognized faces in the entire world, Gigi has stunned in a countless number of fashion campaigns, but it's her work with fitness brands that has evoked major backlash. Many critics have said that these high-profile athletic brands should be using athletes instead of supermodels like Gigi as the face of their campaigns. But as a supermodel and the face of Reebok's #PerfectNever campaign, Gigi said she does not feel the need to defend this.

"If they can't see that the point of me being the face of a #PerfectNever campaign is because I'm trying to show that I'm not perfect . . . Then that sucks for you."

"I feel like the people that get it, get it and the people that don't, don't because they don't want to," Gigi said. "People see me and a lot of people that are in the public eye as these successful people and therefore there has to be something bad about them. They have to be a bitch, or they have to be hard to work with, or they have to be anorexic, or they have to be eating too much or whatever, they always have to find the bad thing. I try to focus on the positive people, and if they can't see that the point of me being the face of a #PerfectNever campaign is because I'm trying to show that I'm not perfect and the whole world thinks I'm perfect. You know what I mean? If you don't get that, then that sucks for you."

Seriously, it's Gigi's huge heart and internal values that attracted Reebok to her in the first place, and she shouldn't have to defend that to those who don't understand. Inga Stenta, senior director at Reebok, chimed in to explain even more why Reebok chose to align with such a positive and powerful woman like Gigi.

"From our perspective, we're working Gigi because of who she is," Inga said. "Yes, she happens to be a model, but it's her values and her message that she's delivering and the role (and role model) that she's playing for all of these women . . . And it's not about the pictures, it's about the person inside."

Gigi and the entire Reebok campaign are inspiring women to slam these filtered notions of perfection and instead focus on our individual selves, and how we can be the best version of ourselves by building each other up and not comparing our photos to someone else on the internet. For Gigi, she doesn't fight with the internet trolls because they don't know her, and they're judging her based on her appearance, which is never acceptable.

"I think, as you grow in this industry, a big, big, big thing is choosing your battles and realizing you fight for what's important to you, and the people that don't agree sometimes don't deserve to understand," Gigi said on why she doesn't need to defend the backlash against models representing fitness brands. "That's why I try to only defend the things that I feel I really really need to, and if not, I hope the people just look for the best in other people and if they don't, then maybe that's just a reflection on themselves."

The Color You Should Wear More of in 2017 Isn't Black, but It's Pretty Damn Close

For most fashion girls, a head-to-toe black outfit is a sacred look because you always look good and it's easy to put together. With the new year quickly approaching, however, we're challenging ourselves (and you) to make some tiny style changes, starting with: wear a little less black and a little more navy. You're probably thinking, "Navy? That's random," but if you've been paying attention to street style photos, you know it's a shade It girls have always worn. Navy works as a base with everything from bold prints to bright colors and even pairs well with edgier pieces like leather.

In fact, the street style shots ahead prove the neutral tone is as versatile and easy to coordinate outfits with as black. We even had to squint a few times at our screen to tell the dark hues apart. Although black will always be a safe and classic color, do give it a rest and give navy a chance in 2017. You may even realize there are navy items hanging in your closet already. But if there aren't, we have it taken care of with some shopping ahead plus some tips on how to style the color.

Dad Turned Baby's Onesie Into a Spacesuit That Will Crack You Up

When Ben Brucker's 4-month-old daughter, Maya, was having trouble sleeping, he and his wife purchased a Baby Merlin's Magic Sleepsuit to help her sleep through the night, but because of its hilariously puffy design, Ben took it one step further and turned the onesie into a spacesuit. Ben posted the images to Imgur, where he explained that he's on paternity leave and because his wife has returned back to work, he managed to sneak the patches into the house and transform the getup into an actual spacesuit. His mom was in town and helped him sew on the patches in the hopes that Maya can sleep better and have some out-of-this-world dreams in her suit.

"I'm now on paternity leave for a few weeks, and my wife is back to work," he told ABC News. "She's been a bit stressed, and we are extremely sleep deprived, so I did this entirely to make her laugh. I wanted to turn something that was stressing us out into something that makes us smile."

Ben did that and so much more. Although Maya didn't know why her dad was laughing so hard, when his wife came home from work, she was completely surprised by the hilarious spacesuit. The couple had previously joked that Maya's spacesuit was going to send her to the moon in her dreams, but Ben's creativity is making that dream come true with her new NASA gear.

While my wife was at work today, I had some fun modding our daughter's Magic SleepSuit.

Is This New Subscription Service the Netflix of Beauty?

Marcia Kilgore is well-versed in launching revolutionary companies, but her newest venture may just change the beauty world forever.

The entrepreneur founded a string of household name brands - Bliss, FitFlop, Soap & Glory - before moving on to Beauty Pie, a new subscription service that calls itself "makeup without the markup."

The concept is simple, but genius: Kilgore works with the chemists and manufacturers behind prestige companies and has them create formulas for Beauty Pie. If you sign up for a $10/monthly (or $120/annually) subscription, you'll get access to these beauty products at factory price. For example, a Beauty Pie volumizing mascara would cost you $24 if you bought it without subscribing, but if you are a member, you'll only pay $2(!).

This concept was born out of her own work with beauty suppliers, which she missed after selling her last company. "I would get to leave with a huge bag of products to test, which was thrilling," Kilgore told POPSUGAR via email. "I would then stumble into a cosmetics shop in the airport or train station on my way home, and think, 'Whoa, I am glad I don't have to pay retail for my cosmetics!' There was this idea to make that thrilling 'kid in a candy store' feeling available to every woman."

Kilgore hopes that Beauty Pie will appeal to the beauty junkie who has a love of the deluxe, but is trying to cut back on how much they spend. She looked at brands like Everlane, Spotify, and Netflix for inspiration, which all offer transparent pricing and convenience.

Beauty Pie's transparent pricing comes from the lack of markup that goes into each product. Think about your favorite designer makeup brand: the sheer prestige behind the label is mostly to blame for the expensive cost. Meanwhile, the manufacturers behind that pricey item likely also produce drugstore makeup.

"Most brands do not have their own factories, but rather source their products from outside factories," Kilgore explained. "For example, Tesco sources from the same makeup factory as Charlotte Tilbury."

Another expensive characteristic of high-end cosmetics is the fancy packaging. "In a lot of cases, the packaging costs more than the product, and it isn't recyclable and it ends up in landfills," said Kilgore. Not so with Beauty Pie. The brand is taking luxury formulas from the best factories around the world and then packaging them in minimalist but chic tubes.

"We are trying to minimize the impact of our use and love of cosmetics on landfills," said Kilgore. Her team hopes to work toward developing cosmetics packaging that is more recyclable as well as aesthetically pleasing (a rare feat in today's product development landscape).

Beauty Pie just launched in December 2016, but the brand will be rolling out tools in January, then moving on to skin care in April. Kilgore is starting with "incredible Swiss formulations" for this category and has tapped labs in South Korea, Japan, France, and more clear complexion hubs around the world for future launches.

"We are literally launching 365 new makeup products next year alone," revealed Kilgore, "So there's going to be a lot for her to choose from . . . a cornucopia of cosmetics."

Considering "cut back on beauty spending" is a common New Year's resolution for many makeup junkies, it's definitely worth seeing what a Beauty Pie membership can do you for your wallet. Learn more when you visit beautypie.com.

She even revealed which of her favorite makeup items made the cut into her hospital bag. Not Really Feelin' Yourself? Here's How to Fix That

Last week I attended an inspiring fitness panel hosted by Nike and Lead Like Her, a platform of empowerment for creative and independent women. Among the panel were some familiar faces from the fitness world - coach and trainer Alyssa Chang, graphic designer and fitness influencer Mickey Roxas, and health coach, fitness blogger, and creative Joanne Encarnacion. These women broke down barriers with more than the typical, canned inspirational answers - they opened up about eating disorders, depression, and unhealthy relationships with weight and with themselves. It got REAL.

Seeing these fabulous, successful, healthy women show their vulnerable sides was inspiring in and of itself. But, it also made me wonder how they push through those tougher times when they sense negative thoughts and feelings creeping back in - not just to keep appearances on social media, but for their sanity. So, naturally, I was not shy about asking.

Joanne answered so candidly, it was like she was waiting for this question to be asked. And her response made so much sense: in sum, we don't get enough compliments, and as adults and powerful independent women, we don't need to wait for those compliments - we can give them to ourselves!

"I always think about how I talk to my kids," she told us. "I tell them every day, 'you're so beautiful,' or 'you're so smart.' So as children, we receive and are showered with these compliments and these affirmations all the time," she said. But that stops happening as much when you're an adult. So what does she do to balance it out, and ward off the potential onset of depression? She has five daily affirmations, and they change from day to day.

"We don't compliment ourselves enough, and we are trained to not accept compliments," she said. "I tell myself something every day, even if it's small like 'my muffin tops are extra cushy today!' or 'my hair looks fabulous right now!'"

Here are a few big ones that she relies on often:

  1. I am a powerhouse, I am indestructible.
  2. I am courageous.
  3. I am at peace with all that is happened in my life, all that is happening, and will happen.
  4. I am the designer of my life, I build its foundation and choose its contents.
  5. I am blessed with an incredible family and amazing friends.

Hitting a rut? Not feeling strong? Affirm yourself. You don't have to wait for a man, a boss, a family member, a friend, or ANYONE to tell you how amazing you are. It's OK to be modest and humble, but that doesn't mean you can't love on yourself.

This Is How All Your Favorite Chefs Make Meatloaf

Before you dis the idea of meatloaf, hear me out. When done right (like this Italian meatloaf with marinara sauce by Recipe Tin Eats, it's actually good. If your only mental image of the old-school dinnertime staple involves a dry log of ground beef covered in ketchup, you'll be surprised by how upscale and flavorful it can be. These recipes are proof! Here's how some of our favorite celebrity chefs and Food Network personalities make meatloaf; in other words, the only ways you'll ever prepare it again.

Giada De Laurentiis: Add Feta and Sun-Dried Tomatoes

Giada lightens up the classic with her recipe for turkey meatloaf with feta and sun-dried tomatoes. Turkey is drier than beef, so the recipe calls for plenty of Italian ingredients that add extra flavor, like garlic, parsley, sun-dried tomatoes with herbs, and feta.

Alton Brown: Mix Ground Chuck and Sirloin

By using a combination of ground chuck and sirloin in his Good Eats meatloaf recipe, Alton Brown ensures there's no lack of flavor or moisture. What makes this version even better is the sweet homemade glaze made of Worcestershire sauce, honey, cumin, and hot sauce.

Ina Garten: Go Classic

If you're looking for a totally classic meatloaf recipe that delivers, Ina Garten's meatloaf is for you. None of the ingredients are out of the ordinary (olive oil, onions, tomato paste, breadcrumbs, and, yes, ketchup), but when measured to a T - that's one of Ina's best cooking tips - they result in a no-fail meatloaf you're sure to love.

Chrissy Teigen: Use Half Spicy Italian Sausage

"Man, I love meatloaf," Chrissy Teigen wrote in the introduction of her recipe for Spicy Italian Sausage Meatloaf on page 202 of her cookbook, Cravings. She goes on to explain that she even loved the frozen TV dinner kind, but "Now, of course, I prefer my meatloaf made of actual, you know, meat. And not just any meat, the gift that is spicy Italian sausage." The expert home cook uses a combination of ground beef and hot Italian sausage for a guaranteed nonboring meal that lives up to the hype of her other brilliant recipes, like chicken pot pie soup.

Ree Drummond: Wrap It in Bacon

When in doubt, add bacon. Ree Drummond's meatloaf recipe, like all Pioneer Woman recipes, is simple and comforting. The Food Network host wraps the entire meatloaf in eight to 12 slices of bacon, allowing all the flavor to seep into the meat as it bakes.

Mario Batali: Stuff With Prosciutto and Spinach

Mario Batali always adds a little somethin' somethin' to his recipes (scrambled eggs with truffles, anyone?), so it's no surprise that his meatloaf is fit for a special occasion. His meatloaf stuffed with prosciutto and spinach is easy enough for anyone to master but elevated enough to impress guests. Freshly grated pecorino cheese and red wine take the flavors to the next level.

The Fashion-Based Theory From The Walking Dead That No One Is Talking About

We'll have to wait until October for The Walking Dead to return, but that won't stop us from trying to solve every mystery from the show - including ones we discover all on our own, after hours of binge-watching the suspenseful series. For instance: have you noticed that the majority of female walkers roam around in maxi dresses? What's the deal there? Was there a shortage of pants before this virus spread, forcing them to rock the next-best comfy staple? We really need to know!

In reality, it's probably easier for the costume department to rip up and "walker-fy" a single piece rather than a full outfit. But we'll still hold out hope that one day, our question will be explained. Until then, take a look at the maxis taking over this apocalyptic world. Then see what life was like before walkers were everywhere.

T-Rex Hands Is the Bizarre Selfie Pose You Didn't Even Notice

It feels like every day a new posing hack hits the web and convinces us to step up our selfie game. Thanks to the Kardashians, we've mastered the art of "duck lips." And recently, a variety of other bizarre, selfie-enhancing techniques including squinching and fish gaping have joined the famous expression.

Now there's yet another new pose taking over Instagram called "T-rex hands." Beauty maven Huda Kattan coined the term and shared that it's basically the (calculated but slightly random) placement of your hand anywhere on your face. Your fingers should have a subtle, relaxed curve to resemble the clutch of a Tyrannosaurus rex while still keeping it classy.

We perused Instagram for some snaps of our favorite celebrities flashing their T-rex hands- and it turns out, pretty much everyone is doing it. Read on for Huda's hilarious explanation of the technique, and practice with your own paws during your next selfie session. It's always a great way to show off your nail art!

Michelle Obama's Just Wearing a Simple Tunic - Until You Spy Her Layering Hack

The floral print on Michelle Obama's pussy-bow blouse was certainly striking, but it was her coatigan that made us do a double take. The FLOTUS joined Ryan Seacrest to read The Night Before Christmas at the Children's National Health System in Washington DC, and instead of opting for yet another holiday dress, Michelle offered us a styling trick. She found an elegant chiffon top in an electrifying graphic print that came complete with a matching duster.

At first glance, it appeared she was wearing a cape or some sort of asymmetrical tunic over her trousers. But zoom in and you'll find Michelle's playing the layering game, and we can all benefit from a hack like hers during the colder months. Of course, Michelle's bright pattern doesn't exactly scream "Winter," but how can you remain a relevant fashion icon without breaking some of the rules? Read on for a peek at Michelle's clever combination, then mix and match your way to a festive, feminine-inspired look.
