This Fifth Grade Teacher Has the Most Genius Way to Get His Students Excited For Class
In an effort to bring joy and build trust, CMS teacher Barry White Jr. has a special handshake with every. single. student. Full story: http://on.wcnc.com/2kKPUCC
Posted by NBC Charlotte on Tuesday, January 31, 2017
For some elementary school teachers, getting your students excited for class can seem like attempting the impossible, but this fifth grade literacy teacher has found an impressive solution. Barry White Jr. has a personalized handshake with each and every one of his students in all three of his classes, and they all line up to perform them before entering the classroom every day. He says doing so encourages his students to be creative and gets them excited for class.
"The most critical component is the relationship, the rapport you build with your students, because sometimes it can go underrated or overlooked," the Charlotte, NC, teacher told WCNC. "Before I'm able to deliver a substantial amount of content to them, they have to invest in the teacher."
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school district posted a video of Mr. White and his impressive connection with the students on its Facebook page, and it's blowing the internet away. White explained it was inspired by LeBron James and his personalized handshakes with all of his teammates on the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Seriously, how awesome are all the different handshakes?!

Is Bruising After Foam Rolling Normal?
Foam rolling is one of those "it hurts so good" love-hate relationships. You dread it and look forward to it simultaneously. It's essential to muscular recovery, but how can you tell if you've gone too far with this "good" pain?
My first foam rolling experience was excruciating; after a physical therapist told me I had "the tightest IT bands" he'd ever seen, he explained how he was going to roll them out for me, and that it was going to hurt, and that it was going to bruise the next day - but it was nothing to worry about.
He was right - I had blue-green bruises from my hip to my knee for about five days. It was freaky, but I did feel better after the bruises subsided. From then on out, I committed to rolling my extratight IT bands regularly.
Have you ever bruised after foam rolling? My bruising experience years ago was forgotten until recently when I was rolling my VMO muscles with a lacrosse ball - and subsequently bruising the crap out of them. I consulted Dr. Kristin Maynes, PT, DPT, and Michael Heller, sports performance analysis coordinator at Professional Physical Therapy, to ask their opinions on post-foam-rolling bruises.
Is Bruising Normal?
Short answer? Yes. "Especially if you're really tight in that area," said Dr. Maynes, or "if it is the first time performing it," said Heller. Another reason you might be bruising? If you're staying on one area for too long. Dr. Maynes noted that if you're rolling one muscle area for two to three minutes, you're bound to see some bruising the next day.
What Causes Bruising?
When you're foam rolling, you're breaking up scar tissue and adhesions (a specific type of scar tissue that occurs from inflammation, trauma, etc.). When you put your "bodyweight pressure on a concentrated myofascial area," you are "breaking adhesions, as well as [creating] small tears in tightened muscle fibers," said Heller. "This causes blood to be trapped under the skin, giving the appearance of a bruise."
It's nothing to worry about, but don't go rolling that area again until the bruise clears up . . . ow!
How Far Is Too Far?
How do you know the difference between normal discomfort and injury-inducing pain? "Foam rolling is done to a person's pain level tolerance and threshold," said Dr. Maynes. "If it's too painful, don't do it." Seems pretty simple, right? Don't push it too far, and make sure you stretch. "If it's causing more harm than good (physically and mentally), and if it's too painful you can't stand it, then stop," she said. "It's not for everyone and it's not going to make or break your recovery if you don't foam roll!"
In terms of pain threshold, she said there's a "good pain" that is similar to the sensation of a deep-tissue massage, and that if you experience it, proceed with your rolling regimen.
Can you overdo foam rolling? Heller says no. "You cannot overdo foam rolling, as it can be performed seven days a week, and it even serves as a good warmup and cooldown when working out."
Use these guidelines:
- Only stay on the area for 30 seconds to one minute.
- Don't roll an injured area unless advised by a medical professional (including your nearest physical therapist).
- If the pain is more than some soreness/tightness, stop.
- Stretch afterward - "You need to supplement with stretching for foam rolling to be effective," said Dr. Maynes.

The Reason This Woman Has "Decided" to Stay Pregnant For 260 Weeks
Lauren has been pregnant since 2012 . . . with the same baby, because she can't afford to take time off work from her job that doesn't have paid leave . . . so she's just decided to stay pregnant until she racks up enough vacation days to have a baby.
OK, so Lauren's case is impossible, but the message behind her it-would-be-funny-if-it-weren't-true situation is applicable to many moms (and dads) all over the US who don't receive paid leave. This video from the National Partnership For Women and Families seeks to bring light to this issue with a touch of humor and a whole load of truth bombs.
"It's absurd that most US workers - 86 percent - don't have paid family leave through their employers," the caption on the video reads. "And only some are lucky enough to live in the four states that have paid family and medical leave laws. But we can change this." The organization offered a course of action on its website: "Ask your members of Congress to watch the video and then stand up for a robust national paid family and medical leave program."
Do it for yourself. Do it for Lauren.
Whoever's Next to Anna Wintour Has the Best Seat in the House
For celebrities, sitting front row at Fashion Week is pretty much a given - but what happens when you find out that you're sitting alongside the Anna Wintour? The Vogue editrix is famous for her self-assured, slightly intimidating, poker-faced Fashion Week presence, and earning a seat next to her could easily be a dream come true for most fashion-loving celebs. It also sets in motion a longtime industry superstition: does earning a coveted spot next to Anna also nab you a Vogue cover? Just in time for the start of Fashion Week, we're taking a look back at some of the stars who have been seated next to Anna during the shows.

PSA: This Is Us Star Chrissy Metz Was on American Horror Story
At this point, we all know and love Chrissy Metz from This Is Us, but once upon a time, she was on another very popular show: American Horror Story. Even fans of both shows may not have realized that Metz starred on season four, Freak Show, as Ima "Barbara" Wiggles, unfortunately and un-politically correctly referred to as the Fat Lady. While she had bit parts on Entourage and My Name Is Earl, she explained to Glamour in February that she was sure AHS would be her big break:
"And then in 2014 American Horror Story came up. I'd wanted the role of Ima [Barbara] Wiggles desperately, and after I got it, I thought, OK, awesome, this is a jumping board for my career! But when it wrapped, there was . . . nothing. I almost moved back to Florida, but my mom said, 'You can either be miserable here and not pursue your dreams, or you can be miserable in LA and at least pursue what you want.' So I stayed . . . I am so grateful that I had such an amazing support system, but when I booked This Is Us, I had 81 cents in my bank account. I could cry right now just thinking about it."
She also revealed that she was literally down to her last 81 cents when she booked This Is Us. We're very glad that she persevered!
7 Things We Know About Orange Is the New Black Season 5
If you're still finishing season four of Orange Is the New Black - seriously? - and you care about spoilers, you might want to rethink reading the rest of this post. Having said that, there's nothing too revealing about season five details, because there really aren't very many yet. The latest season of the hit series premiered on Netflix in June of last year, and we still haven't gotten many plot details about what's to come, but here's what we do know - and what we can deduce - about season five.
This Woman's Video Hits the Mom-Guilt Nail on the Head
Ahh, mom guilt. It's felt pretty much every second of every day from the moment you give birth, and though it shouldn't have to be this way, that's how the (lactation) cookie crumbles. Melissa Radke, the funny mom who had the internet in hysterics over her rant about her kids' spirit week at school, knows a thing or two about mom guilt and created a video because it's her hope that "someone somewhere is stinkin' it up like me."
The video, which features Radke sitting on a bed, starts with her holding up a sheet of paper that reveals she hates those videos where the people just flip up pieces of paper. Why she's doing it then, you ask? Well, watch the video to find out, but mom guilt mayyy have a little something to do with it.
As always, though, she finds the humor in every situation, so expect to giggle throughout.
Beyoncé Never Met a Wind Machine She Didn't Like
It's very rare to see Beyoncé without her waist-grazing locks. That's because the extra length allows her to get the hair whip effect when she's belting out the lyrics to her No. 1 hits. This weekend she'll be on stage with Coldplay at the Super Bowl in San Francisco, and there are sure to be multiple wind cues. Take a look back at Mrs. Carter's best performance hair moments. Goodness knows she can flip, whip, shake, and blow her mane like no other. Perhaps you'll be inspired to do some hairography of your own with "Grown Woman" on repeat.
Why "Becky With the Good Hair" Has a More Powerful Meaning Than Infidelity
Being the other woman is never fun or a good idea - but being the other woman when it comes to Beyoncé's marriage is reputation suicide. Enter scene: Rachel Roy.
Let's back up - at the 2014 Met Gala, Solange Knowles notoriously hit Jay Z in an elevator. Allegedly, she was pissed that Jay Z had cheated on her sister, Beyoncé, with fashion designer Rachel Roy. Jay Z worked with Rachel when she was the creative director of Rocawear, a clothing company Jay Z launched with Rachel's now-ex-husband, Damon Dash.
The elevator incident went viral but had died down in the media until Saturday, April 23, when HBO released Beyoncé's new visual album, Lemonade. In it, Beyoncé sings, "He only want me when I'm not there / He better call Becky with the good hair." While it has not been confirmed that Lemonade is biographical, it certainly seems to shed light on her marriage to Jay Z and its rumored problems.
After the album debuted, the internet was teeming with conspiracy theories. We knew there was a "Becky" (the other woman), but we didn't know who she was.
Then, Rachel inserted herself into the situation by sharing a photo on Instagram captioned: "Good hair don't care, but we will take good lighting, for selfies, or self truths, always. Live in the light #nodramaqueens." This clue about having "good hair don't care" caused people to point fingers at Rachel for being Becky.
She also shared a more positive photo that said: "All you shld seek in friendships is love & no judgement, growth & laughter." Rachel eventually made her Instagram private and tweeted: "I respect love, marriages, families and strength. What shouldn't be tolerated by anyone, no matter what, is bullying, of any kind."
The BeyHive (as Beyoncé's fans call themselves) is swarming Rachel's social media accounts with spiteful comments as well as lemon and bee emoji.
Sleeping with someone else's husband is definitely in the wrong, but so is cyberbullying.
Some people believe there is a bigger issue surrounding "Becky." Rather than trying to figure out if Becky is or isn't Rachel, they point out that there are racial undertones to Beyoncé's lyrics. The inference is that "Becky" has desirable, sleek hair, while Beyoncé has a naturally curly texture under the wigs and without hot tools. It sheds light on an overall picture when it comes to how black coarse hair is perceived, since the former is "good" and the latter is assumed to be the opposite.
"The fact that people are trying to figure out who Becky is defeats the purpose of this lyric - and the whole performance to me," said social media editor Larissa Green, who is biracial. "Being pushed aside because our hair is coarse and doesn't follow a straight and narrow is something very real to me. I think her lyric means: if you can't handle it, then that's no one's problem but your own."
Black journalist Bené Viera shared a lengthy Facebook post on the matter. Some highlights include:
"And if you're writing that it's mainly about infidelity and marital strife w/Jay you've missed the mark. Let's start here though: Beyoncé made #Lemonade for Black women first, then Black people as a whole. . . . If you didn't know what 'call Becky with the good hair' meant without Googling, put your pen down. . . . Put aside the gossip for a second to dig a bit deeper. . . . This is about so much more than her working through a man cheating. It's about black womanhood and that journey of coming into your own. Deciding that love is transformative. Telling us, black people, black women, that with love and hope we will win. Realizing our power as women. And healing. Lemonade tackles lineage, generational curses, black feminism, the work women put into relationships, how anger can fuel greatness, sisterhood, loving ourselves, reconciling with being a daddy's girl while simultaneously being disappointed with how he did your mom, power, healing, freedom. Black women ALWAYS being given lemons but making lemonade. Don't reduce it to a story about infidelity. Please."
Read into it what you will - these are just theories and speculations until Beyoncé goes on the record to officially explain it. And let us know your own beliefs in the comments!

The Most Popular Kate Spade Accessories of All Time Are Such a Throwback
Kate Spade New York is the brand behind some pretty iconic accessories. I'll never forget the yacht clutch my boyfriend's aunt secured ahead of her vacation cruise or the woven animal-shaped picnic baskets. The label's themed bags and jewels make for pretty fabulous street style moments, so it's no wonder you see them all over Fashion Week. If a statement item catches your eye, you can bet it's Kate Spade. So when we got the chance to talk to Deborah Lloyd, president and chief creative officer at the label, we had to ask her about her favorite pieces of all time.
This New York Fashion Week, Deborah will be showing Spring 2017, a collection inspired by her travels to Morocco. Still, there are plenty more memorable accessories she can't get out of her head. Whether it was because they sold out instantly, cementing their status as must haves (who could forget that swan bag?), or were inspired by special memories, the accessories ahead all achieve Kate Spade's signature flair. In fact, Deborah thinks these are the best items ever made.
10 Outfits Beyoncé Wore That the World Will Never Forget
When we think of Beyoncé's style, we think of everything from leggy little minidresses she's worn to perform to sheer dramatic dresses that have swept the red carpet. That's because Queen Bey will try everything once, and then again if it works - and given her fierce confidence, bold taste, and toned figure, it usually does. That's what makes Beyoncé a style icon in her own right - and the 2016 recipient of the CFDA fashion icon award.
We can name so many of the singer's flawless fashion moments off the top of our heads, and they include everything from gowns with dramatic trains to mosaic-embellished over-the-knee boots and sequined suits. Now, the elegant lingerie she wore for her second pregnancy announcement will even go down in history. A Game-Day Game Plan For a Healthier Super Bowl Spread
Looking for the perfect Super Bowl party snacks, but worried about the guilt that follows? Thankfully, dietitian Julie Upton, MS, RD, of Appetite For Health, is here to offer eight different guilt-free snack ideas that will help you score major points with your friends and family this weekend.
Will you be tuning in to watch Super Bowl XLIX as the New England Patriots take on the Seattle Seahawks for the title of world champions? If so, you'll want to avoid racking up too many (nutrition) penalties from typical football foods like chips and dip, wings, pizza, and beer. These football faves can easily pile on more than 2,500 calories - more than you need in an entire day! - and leave you feeling like a 300-pound NFL lineman.
Below are eight of my favorite Super Bowl bites that will be part of my game-day menu:
- Fresh veggies: I always serve a large tray of veggies with healthy dips during the game to help fill me up, not out. Most veggies have fewer than 50 calories a cup compared to 150 calories in regular potato chips. Baby carrots, celery, cherry or grape tomatoes, broccoli, jicama, and bell peppers are some of my faves.
- Better chips: It's not game day without crunchy nibbles, so I buy better munchies that have fiber and protein. To shave about 30 calories per ounce (15-20 chips), opt for baked instead of fried. For a tortilla chip, I like lentil- or bean-based options or Lundberg Multigrain chips because they provide some fiber and protein compared to other chips; for pita chips, look for one made with whole grains.
- Skinny dips: Most cheese- or sour-cream-based dips will blow your calorie budget and pile on a lot of unhealthy saturated fat. I serve black bean dip and hummus, which provide protein and fiber and keep saturated fat low. For example, Sabra Classic Hummus has just 35 calories and less than a gram of saturated fat per tablespoon compared to nearly two grams of saturated fat in a tablespoon of regular sour cream. I also use hummus for a stand-in for mayo on sandwiches and when making deviled eggs.
- Holy guacamole!: This year, Americans will devour a record number of fresh avocados - 240 million - during Super Bowl week. That's fine by me, as I'll be enjoying plenty of guacamole too. A tablespoon of guacamole has about 30 calories and 2.5 grams of fat, most of which is beneficial monounsaturated fats. To make, here is my favorite guac recipe.
- Buffalo-style "wings": According to the National Chicken Council, Americans eat more than 1.25 billion wings while watching the big game - that's enough wings to cover the distance from Seattle to Foxborough, MA, nearly 28 times. Since the average fried wing with ranch or blue cheese dressing will set you back about 125 calories, I save hundreds of calories by making grilled or broiled "buffalo-chicken strips" by coating strips of boneless skinless chicken breast in a hot buffalo sauce then baking or grilling the chicken.
- Salad pizza: It won't be game day without pizza, but did you know that just two slices from some delivery chains set you back nearly 600 calories? I make my own lighter pizzas with a store-bought whole-wheat crust that I bake with fresh mozzarella, red onion, and olives. Once baked, I top it with a fresh arugula salad.
- All-star sips: One thing I try to live by is limiting liquid calories, because research shows that you don't compensate for beverage calories by eating less food. Since alcohol stimulates appetite, I try to steer clear. Come game day, I'll be drinking fruit-infused sparkling water.
- One-bite desserts: For a sweet finisher, I look for dark-chocolate-covered almonds and one-bite brownies and cookies. Not necessarily guilt-free, but better than many typical choices.

12 Retro Books From Your Childhood That Are Still Totally Cool
My mom didn't save a lot from my childhood, so I was surprised when she started presenting my 5-year-old daughter with books she'd stocked away from when I was a kid. Not only do they each bring back tons of happy memories of her reading to a tiny me, but the stories and retro-cool graphics also totally stand up today. Although I love a modern children's book as much as my daughter does, there's something even more gratifying about watching her enjoy these timeless tales the way I did when I was her age.
Which one was your childhood favorite?

Noah Cyrus Steps Out of Her Sister's Shadow in a Stunning New Performance
Near the end of last year Noah Cyrus, the younger sister of Miley Cyrus, blew us all away with the release of her first single. Called "Make Me (Cry)," the collaboration with Labyrinth marked a pretty emotionally rich debut for the 17-year-old, but the sweet melodies and harmonies were surely a welcome addition to the music world. This week, Cyrus stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform the single. Not only does she prove that the song sounds just as good, if not better, live, but it's clear she's got the talented genes of her sister and father as well. Watch the soulful performance above, then get ready for her debut album, NC-17.
7 DIY Hair Remedies Your Grandma Always Talked About That Actually Work
It's safe to say we've spent our teen and adult lives on a quest for the secrets to silky, shiny hair. Wouldn't you know, the secret to achieving ultimate softness or the perfect hue could be right in your refrigerator or pantry, and your grandma might have been telling you about them for years! You may have rolled your eyes at her ideas growing up, but as an adult you're surely willing to try anything. Read on for 10 abuela-approved DIY hair tricks.
1. Honey and olive oil give hair shine:
Honey is not just for tea and olive oil is not just for salad. The kitchen-staples are well-known for their softening properties, so grandma was right when she would suggest you sprinkle a mix of the two on your strands to make them healthier. Follow a simple heated recipe for the ultimate deep conditioner.
2. Mayonnaise works wonders as a conditioning treatment:
Unlike chemical-laden salon treatments, mayonnaise is chock full of oils and proteins to leave your hair strong and well-hydrated. "The oil softens the hair, making it shinier - and the protein in the eggs will make strands stronger," says hairstylist Nathaniel Hawkins.
3. Adding avocado to a deep conditioning mask will boost results:
Nature's butter doesn't just taste great, it also does wonders for parched skin and hair. Try a homemade mask made with honey and olive or coconut oil to achieve amazing softness.
4. Coca-Cola can give your hair a healthy shine:
What the what? But it's true, even stars like British supermodel Suki Waterhouse turn to the soda for a just-back-from-the-beach look, thanks to its acidity. Just be sure to rinse your hair immediately after trying it!
5. Eggs help your hair to grow:
Who wouldn't love to speed up hair growth while dodging damage? Eggs are loaded with protein, a key ingredient your hair needs to regain strength. Mix one with olive oil to do the trick.
6. Lemon juice can lighten your hair:
Skip the bleach for more gentle solution for natural highlights. It's just like a natural version of Sun-In.
7. Apple cider vinegar helps to detangle:
We all know the frustrations that come with brushing out the tangles in your hair every morning. Try a few spritzes of apple cider vinegar as a natural remedy that will also add softness and shine. Bonus: apple cider vinegar is also known to help with dandruff!
This Woman's Body Was Photoshopped by Artists From Around the World to Look "More Attractive"
With one Photoshop experiment, the site Online Doctor is getting to the bottom of global beauty standards. It enlisted female graphic designers from around the world and asked them to photoshop the same picture of one woman to make her more attractive, in their eyes, to the people of their respective cultures.
The results speak to the pressure put on women around the world to have a "perfect body", putting unrealistic standards of beauty in the spotlight, and continuing an important dialogue about the need for body-acceptance in the fashion industry. This Sailor Moon Sheet Mask Smells Just Like Tuxedo Mask's Roses
I never thought that being a Sailor Moon fan would pay off at work, but when the beauty world fell head over heels for products inspired by the series, I volunteered as tribute faster than Katniss Everdeen hyped up on espresso. First, I put Sailor Moon liquid eyeliner to the test . . . then I discovered sheet masks from the same line.
As a self-professed mask addict, I snatched a pack of the Creer Beaute Miracle Romance sheet masks up as soon as I spotted them at Candy Doll Beauty in San Francisco. I was unable to read any of the ingredients on the Japanese-language packaging, but I was willing to risk it in order to feel like a Sailor Scout - or Sailor Senshi, for other series purists like myself - for 20-30 minutes!
I was willing to risk it in order to feel like a Sailor Scout for 20-30 minutes!
Luckily, after purchasing the masks, I learned that they contain a soothing combination of primrose oil, avocado extract, vitamin B3, katsuma flower extract, prune extract, hyaluronic acid, and collagen - none of which irritate my sensitive skin. Evening primrose oil lends the skin beneficial fatty acids that can aid with skin care issues like acne and dry patches, and the collagen element of the masks helps fight wrinkles. I thought "sign me the hell up!" as soon as I saw the translated ingredient list.
In a cute nod to Tuxedo Mask, the mask sheets are rose-scented. The light fragrance isn't some afterthought buried by chemical aromas, like plenty of other masks I've tried. After half an hour with one of the sheets on my face (in a bubble bath with Sailor Moon playing on my laptop, obviously) my skin not only smelled like Tuxedo Mask's favorite flower; it felt petal-soft, too.
There is a problematically named "whitening and brightening" version of Creer Beaute's mask that focuses on complexion, but I would highly recommend the moisturizing version pictured in this post. They're a little tough to track down if you don't have easy access to Asian-import beauty stores, but thanks to eBay you can get your hands on the sheet mask sets (prices vary) if you're willing to pay international shipping.
Read on for pictures of the mask, then let me know which Sailor Moon product you want to see in action next!
1 Woman, 25+ Photoshopped Versions of Global Beauty
They say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," and 24-year-old radio journalist Esther Honig is putting that to the test. The Kansas City girl is working on a photo project called Before & After in which she's examining how beauty standards vary by countries around the world. She sent the above shot of herself to different global graphic artists, and each photoshopped her hair and makeup look to reflect their cultural take on hair and makeup. Scroll through to see how 22 countries (sometimes with multiple looks from each) have taken on the challenge. And then reflect, how do you define beauty?

Victoria Beckham Wore a Purple Wedding Dress You Might Not Remember
No one could forget the royal purple outfits that David and Victoria Beckham wore to their 1999 wedding reception. Victoria's gown was encrusted with large flowers over her shoulder and incorporated a large slit. She paired her look with metallic lace-up sandals.
David recently commented on the bold coordinated looks in an interview on the British radio show Desert Island Discs. Although he had nothing but glowing things to say about his wife, he does wish he had chosen a more subdued look. "Victoria's was nice . . . I looked like one of the guys out of Dumb and Dumber when they went to that party. I even had a top hat. Unbelievable. What was I thinking?"
Regardless of David's regrets about his own style choices, we are in complete agreement about one thing: Victoria's dress was certainly fun, and as time did tell, purple is absolutely her color. Since 1999 she's rocked the royal shade many times and always pulls it off with ease. Read on for the proof.
Chrissy Metz Reveals She Had 81 Cents Left in the Bank When She Was Cast on This Is Us
Chrissy Metz has been taking Hollywood by storm ever since This Is Us premiered in September 2016. The actress, who plays Kate - or one-third of "The Big Three" on the hit show - was nominated for a Golden Globe award for her standout performance. She's also been hitting red carpets with her adorable boyfriend, chatting with Ellen DeGeneres, and just generally looking gorgeous. But while her name is recognizable now, things weren't always so easy. In the March issue of Glamour, Chrissy reveals that she started out like every other struggling actor trying to make it in Hollywood. From having less than a dollar to her name to thinking her role on American Horror Story would change her life (it didn't), see her best quotes from the magazine below.
- On growing up with a single mom: "I was born in Homestead, Florida. My parents divorced when I was eight; I never really knew my dad, and my mom raised my older sister and brother and me alone. It was challenging. There were times I'd be nervous walking home from elementary school, thinking, 'If that red tag from the power company saying our lights are turned off is on the door handle, I don't know what I'll do.' And there were nights my mom wouldn't eat dinner. She'd be like, 'Oh, I'm not hungry.' I knew she was giving up food to make sure we could eat, but when you're 9 or 10 years old, you can't help. It was devastating. In retrospect I think that's why food equals love in my family. It's the way we showed love - my grandmother would make me a grilled cheese sandwich every time she'd pick me up from school. I really valued that attention. As I got older, that turned into, 'Oh, I'm happy - let's celebrate and eat. I'm sad? Let me eat my feelings.'"
- On how she got into acting: "After high school I really wanted to act, but I didn't even know how to begin. I didn't know anybody with connections, I didn't come from money, I didn't go to Juilliard. But I never was afraid of the odds, even though they were seriously stacked against me. Then my sister - who is skinny and tall and beautiful - heard about this open-call model and talent search at a tiny little Holiday Inn in Gainesville, Florida, and she was like, 'Will you take me?' So we went, and the woman asked me, 'Do you sing or act? Just step in here for a second.' I sang Christina Aguilera's 'Beautiful' - Lord knows why I chose that big ol' thing. The following day she called my sister for a modeling contract and told me she'd introduce me to managers and agents in Los Angeles."
- On being cast in American Horror Story: "I'd wanted the role of Ima [Barbara] Wiggles desperately, and after I got it, I thought, 'OK, awesome, this is a jumping board for my career!' But when it wrapped, there was . . . nothing. I almost moved back to Florida, but my mom said, 'You can either be miserable here and not pursue your dreams, or you can be miserable in LA and at least pursue what you want.' So I stayed. I kept auditioning, with no savings and no money, credit card debt gaining interest. I went on unemployment. I bought ramen noodles at dollar stores. I never had to - God forbid - live on the streets; I moved in with a roommate who told me, 'Stay with me until you can afford rent. Don't give up.' People who supported me were like, 'If you don't have money for food, I'll cook you dinner. You don't have money for acting class? Let's get together and read lines.' I am so grateful that I had such an amazing support system, but when I booked This Is Us, I had 81 cents in my bank account. I could cry right now just thinking about it."
- On This Is Us: "Getting the role of Kate has changed everything. It's crazy to go from not having enough money to buy food to getting free dinners. Why is it that when you really need something, you don't have it? And when you can afford it, you have a surplus of it? You may think, 'Oh, you're on TV, you're a millionaire!' No. It's definitely a lot more than I was making, but I still live with my roommate - though I pay my proper share of the rent now. Meeting my car payment on time? That's new. I paid my friends and my stepdad back. And three months ago I finally paid my credit cards off! Funny, but I still get buyer's remorse - I just got my first pair of Alexander McQueen shoes; I'm so convinced I shouldn't have bought them, I still haven't busted them out of the box."
- On why she'll always be humble: "I've had women - average women, older women, teenagers - who say to me, 'Your role and this show has changed my life.' That makes all the struggle, all the ramen noodles, all the times when I couldn't pay my bills, all the times where I was like, 'I can't do this,' worth it. Sometimes I cry on the way to the set still. There is something that happens when you are grateful: You continue to keep receiving blessings. So I will always be grateful."

Barack and Michelle Obama Are Living Their Best Lives on Vacation Right Now
Obama's on vacation with the hat backwards. He's never coming back. http://pic.twitter.com/RUakcwwgtT
- Philip Lewis (@Phil_Lewis_) February 1, 2017
With signs of the apocalypse growing more and more convincing by the day, Barack and Michelle Obama decided to exchange their troubles for a much-needed, and well-deserved, vacation. The former president and first lady were seen taking a stroll on Necker Island, which is owned by British billionaire Richard Branson in the United States Virgin Islands, and they've never looked more relaxed. Barack ditched his suit for some board shorts, a pair of shades, flip-flops, and - the pièce de résistance - a backwards baseball cap. Michelle, not to be outdone, rocked some pigtails (OMG), a fedora, and denim short-shorts. Afterwards, they grabbed lunch with the Virgin Group founder and waved at onlookers.
Since he and Michelle returned to being private citizens, they've enjoyed their time off by hitting the golf course, lounging at a vacation house in Palm Springs, and sleeping in. Although we're heartbroken over the fact they won't be returning the White House anytime soon, this video is proof that they've never been happier.

Why Ryan Gosling Is Going to Win the Best Actor Oscar This Year
The award season tides might just be changing. Every year, there are clear favorites for Oscars, made pretty obvious after the Critic's Choice, Golden Globes, and SAG Awards all get handed out. About a month ago, if you'd asked us (or really, any Oscars odds-makers), we would have said that Casey Affleck was going to sweep the whole season and pick up best actor statues all the way to the Oscars. But the season has been more interesting than most, and now, we'd like to put out a theory that now has a lot of steam: Ryan Gosling will win the best actor Oscar for La La Land.
Here's why we think he has a very strong shot.

Casey Affleck Lost the SAG Award
Denzel Washington won his first SAG Award for best actor for Fences this week, throwing our usual metric of "whoever gets the SAG Award, gets the Oscar" right off. As you can see, there's been very little variation on SAG winners who go on to win the Oscar in the best actor category, leaving room for some unpredictability at the Oscars. So, you say, why isn't this a story about why Washington is going to win the Oscar? Keep reading.
Gosling Won the Golden Globe
The Golden Globes split its best actor award into drama and musical/comedy, and of course, we watched Gosling take home the musical/comedy statue with a heartwarming speech. Affleck won the award for best actor in a drama that night, following his win in the same category at the Critics' Choice Awards. So far, Affleck still has the most best actor awards this season, but like we said, losing the SAG Award was a major hit to his momentum. And, for those keeping score at home, Washington has only won one major award this season so far.

Ryan Gosling Will Campaign
This is a major factor that we often forget about, unless you're an industry insider. As much as you'd like to think that Oscars go to the people who deserve them the most, for the best acting in the best film that year, that's just not what happens. There is an element of campaigning that nominees do to better their chances. We're not saying Gosling is going to go out and shake hands and hold babies, but his charm offensive has already begun. His Golden Globes speech about his family melted our collective hearts. His reaction to his Oscar nomination was the perfect amount of humble. He's America's boyfriend.
Contrast that with Affleck, who has been dogged by disturbing sexual assault allegations, which, prior to the SAG Awards, hadn't seemed to affect his award season streak. Given that SAG Awards are voted on by actors, and his fellow actors had already begun speaking out against Affleck's recognition, it could be possible that that was a factor in his loss. Whether the Academy will feel the same way is yet to be seen. Adding another black mark to Affleck's chances: his roasting of the same people who honored him at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards in early January. Funny, sure, but it didn't make him look grateful.
La La Land Is the Still the Award Season Favorite
Though La La Land was only honored once at the SAG Awards for Emma Stone's performance, it's still the most celebrated film of award season, having broken records for Golden Globe wins and tied records for Oscar nominations. Who's to say if La La Land is Gosling's best work yet, but he pulls his weight while arguably showing more range of talent than other nominees in that he's singing, dancing, playing the piano, and comedically and dramatically delivering. The movie should go on to win in most major categories on Oscar night, and one of those categories is very likely to be best actor.
Audi's Super Bowl Ad With a Dad Contemplating His Daughter's Worth Will Give You Chills
"What do I tell my daughter?" begins the voice-over in a touching Super Bowl commercial that Audi just debuted. The ad, titled "Daughter," features a fearless young girl competing in a downhill cart race while her father contemplates her future as he narrates. The cinematic spot, which will air during the big game's third quarter, is going to give you major chills.
"Do I tell her that her grandpa is worth more than her grandma?" asks the father as he watches his daughter race. "That her dad is worth more than her mom? Do I tell her that despite her education, her drive, her skills, her intelligence, she will automatically be valued as less than every man she ever meets?"
After these provocative questions, the dad's somber narration takes a different direction as his girl crosses the finish line victorious and he says, "Or maybe, I'll be able to tell her something different."
Audi, which has publicly pledged to support women's pay equality in the workplace and is committed to fostering an equal work environment for all employees, ends its powerful ad with an equally powerful message: "Progress is for everyone."
This Is Us Wedding Pictures Are Way, Way Too Much to Handle
If a regular, run-of-the-mill episode of This Is Us makes you break down in throaty sobs, imagine what a wedding episode is going to do. NBC has released pictures from the Feb. 7 episode, titled "I Call Marriage," and you guessed it, it's a flashback to Rebecca and Jack's wedding day. Surprisingly, the synopsis itself doesn't say anything about the wedding, just that "Rebecca receives an amazing work opportunity." Is her opportunity . . . to marry Jack? We'll need some more information. Until then, enjoy these.
When Are the 2017 Oscars? Plus, Everything Else You Need to Know About the Show
The Oscars are the grand finale of award season, and this year, we have more to look forward to than ever. La La Land is up for an astonishing (and recording-tying) 14 awards, Viola Davis has already broken a record, and unless one of them doesn't show up for their nominated categories, ex-couple Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield will be in the same place at the same time. (It's exciting, OK?) If you're looking forward to the big show, take a look at all the need-to-know details below!
The Nominees
The best picture race is incredibly tight, with Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, La La Land, Lion, Manchester by the Sea, and Moonlight all in the running. At least one actor from each of those movies is up for an individual nod, including Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Casey Affleck, Denzel Washington, and Viola Davis. There are also plenty of first-time nominees like Andrew Garfield, Ruth Negga, Mahershala Ali, and Dev Patel.
The Snubs
Notably missing from the list of nominees are Amy Adams (Arrival) and Tom Hanks (Sully) - both of whom ABC accidentally (and awkwardly) listed on the Oscars' website as nominees. Both Hanks and Adams received nominations from the Critics' Choice Awards, but Adams also earned them from the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes. It's not shocking that they're not included, but it is slightly surprising.
The Host
This year's ceremony will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. Meanwhile, Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd are producing the show.
The Presenters
Last year's acting winners, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brie Larson, Mark Rylance, and Alicia Vikander, are all scheduled to be presenters.
When It's On
The Academy Awards will air on Feb. 26 on ABC!

14 Things You Probably Didn't Know About La La Land
La La Land is causing a fan frenzy this award season. Not only does it feature a star-studded cast, but it is also bringing back musicals in a big way. Even if you're already familiar with the enchanting music and the romantic story, there are quite a few interesting tidbits about the film you probably didn't know. Was Ryan Gosling really playing the piano during the movie? And why is Emma Stone's dress yellow? Find out below.
Bella Hadid Wore the Updated Version of Britney Spears's Iconic Denim Dress
Dior creates dresses every girl wants to wear to parties. Last night for the fashion house's perfume launch event, Bella Hadid slipped into one of the designer's signature looks. Though Bella's worn many Dior outfits, this time the model went with a denim bustier-style dress. It hit just below her knees before flaring out to reveal her Stuart Weitzman black heels. The model accessorized with simple gold hoop earrings, a choker, and furry black shawl as she made her way to the party.
Her outfit reminded us of another denim scene from the early 2000s: when Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake wore denim on denim to the American Music Awards. Bella's more contemporary look, however, just gave the denim dress a 2017 upgrade. Scroll on for a closer look.
Confirmed: Leonardo DiCaprio Will Bring His Sexy Self to the Oscars Again
The toast of last year's award season, Leonardo DiCaprio, will again grace the Academy Awards. This year, he's signed on to be a presenter, along with the rest of 2016's acting winners: Brie Larson (Room), Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), and Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl). This is probably just the tip of the iceberg - get it? Because DiCaprio was in Titanic and that pun will never get old - when it comes to presenters. There are usually around 30 actors and filmmakers who present during the ceremony. Stand by to see who else signs up!
