3 Ways the "Magical Fruit" Can Help You Lose Weight

Beans may be known mostly for their unpleasant odiferous side effect when eaten, but beans are actually nutritious little gems. If you follow these tips, you can eat beans without the bloat, which means you can reap these weight-loss benefits. Here are three reasons to plate-up with beans.

Hello, Fiber!

While the fiber content of beans helps keep things moving, it also gives you that "I'm full" feeling. Satiating your hunger is the key to preventing overeating and consuming too many calories for the day. But you don't just need to eat a plate of plain beans; in fact, you can add beans to smoothies - you won't be able to taste them at all. Or throw them in your scrambled eggs, add them to soups, pasta dishes, or as a topping on homemade pizza.

Protein Punch

Beans aren't just for vegetarians. Omnivores can soak up bean protein as well. High-protein beans help keep energy and blood-sugar levels stable, which helps prevent cravings for sugary pick-me-ups that tend to be high in calories and void of nutrition. Since a couple hours between meals tends to be common crash times, including beans for breakfast and lunch will keep you peppy until your next meal. Whip up a sweet potato, chickpea, and quinoa veggie burger, a plate of polenta with beans, or a satisfying bowl of slow cooker chickpea coconut curry.

Smart Snacking

When trying to beat the scale, you need to make sure that you're eating quality foods low in calories and high in nutrition. Beans make perfect snacks too, so look beyond the typical carrot sticks and hummus pick-me-up and try pairing your fruit with this chocolate hummus. You can snack on honey-roasted cinnamon chickpeas, veggies with creamy white-bean dip, or these delicious edamame pear crostinis. You can also enjoy a low-cal dessert with fortified with beans, like these peanut butter oatmeal raisin cookies or black bean brownies.

Donald Trump Has Been Flaunting a Fake Time Magazine Cover For Years

Update: The Washington Post reports that Time magazine "asked the Trump Organization to remove the phony cover from the walls where it was on display."

Original post: Donald Trump seems to have a fascination with Time magazine. He's often bragged about appearing on the cover of the publication a record-breaking amount of times - which he has not. (He appeared on one cover prior to his political career, in 1989, but often claimed to have graced as many as a half-dozen issues.) Most recently, however, it became evident that the president has one particular issue framed and hung up throughout his many golf clubs. The only problem? It's a fake.

A Washington Post article published on June 26 is exploring the mystery of Trump's fake cover. According to the publication, Trump has framed a forged copy of a March 1, 2009 issue in four of his golf clubs. The fake coverline reads: "Donald Trump: The 'Apprentice' is a television smash!" Another line of text adds: "Trump Is Hitting on All Fronts . . . Even TV!" Beyond the fact that the language does not sound remotely like anything that would appear on a Time cover, the March 2009 issue of Time actually came out on March 2 and featured Kate Winslet on its cover. Trump was not mentioned once in that issue.

Kerri Chyka, a spokeswoman for Time Inc., told The Washington Post that the cover is, indeed, fake. Meanwhile, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said she could not confirm whether or not Trump knew the cover was fake. "We couldn't comment on the decor at Trump Golf clubs one way or another," she said.

It gets way weirder. The cover has reportedly been on display at golf clubs in South Florida, Virginia, Ireland, and Scotland - sometimes in multiple locations within each club. Recently, however, it was reported that the cover was missing from both the Ireland and Scotland locations.

An employee at the Turnberry club in Scotland said, "We used to have a Time magazine cover up - aye, it was there for ages and ages, as long as I've been here . . . but they came and took it down a while back." She added that she thought the cover was taken down due to his controversial reputation as of late.

So why doesn't Trump hang the 1989 issue of the Time he actually did grace? Well, the text that accompanied his picture on that cover wasn't entirely complimentary. "This man may turn you green with envy - or just turn you off," it warned. His second Time cover, on the magazine's 2016 Person of the Year issue, may not also be the most flattering, best advertising to trumpet in Trump golf clubs. On that issue, Time referred to him as the "President of the Divided States of America."

Trader Joe's Foods Every Mom Should Stock Up On

Since I started regularly grocery shopping in my 20s, I've always admired Trader Joe's for its reasonable prices, unique offerings, and quick-serve options, but it wasn't until I became a mom that I realized that it was the probably the best grocery store on the planet. Not only do those affordable prices mean a lot more to me now that I'm shopping for a family of four, including two children who seem intent on eating their own weights in fresh produce and encased meats every day, but the store's frozen section? It has literally kept me sane for the past six years, making dinner prep (and yes, I am one of those who still makes separate dinners for the adults and the kids; judge away) a million times easier.

So, thank you, Trader Joe's, for helping me feed my unique brand of picky yet constantly hungry children without losing my mind. If you are a TJ's newbie, here are the must-have items you need to add to your cart ASAP and why Trader Joe's is the best place to get them!

25 Back-of-the-Neck Tiny Tattoos to Inspire Your Next Ink

There are certain tattoo spots that just seem to work best with small, minimalistic ink: the wrist, the ribs, the ankle, and, of course, the back of the neck.

A relatively small canvas, the back of the neck offers an ideal spot for little ink art that may look out-of-place against larger areas of the body. And while any tattoo will come with a certain level of pain, this spot is considered to be one of the less-painful spots, making it a friendly first-time canvas.

Additionally, back-of-the-neck tattoos are easily covered with hair, scarves, or collared shirts, so it's an ideal choice if you don't want an overtly visible piece. When you are looking to show off your ink, opt for an updo or side-fishtail braid to complement your art.

To inspire you to consider the back of the neck for your next (or, hey, first) tattoo, we've picked some of our favorite looks from Instagram.

Watch Piers Morgan Get Trolled by His Own Cohost Because He's Just That Insufferable

Piers Morgan, a British journalist who is known for fighting with J.K. Rowling online and making many, many other ridiculous comments, just got owned on television . . . by his cohost, no less. On the show Good Morning Britain, Morgan complained about people who talk too much about politics. Susanna Reid, his counterpart on the show, just couldn't hold back her thoughts when it came to Morgan's apparent lack of self-awareness.

In a clip of the moment on June 28, Morgan first says, "I get annoyed about people banging on about politics on Facebook." He goes on a bit more of a rant, until Reid says, "I know exactly what you mean. When someone keeps going on and on and you just need respite and a break and you just wish you could defriend them. But you're just forced every day to listen to their views. I know exactly how you feel." Watch the glorious moment ahead.

The internet couldn't conceal its happiness over seeing Morgan get owned so badly on live TV.

Some pointed out that it's not Reid's first moment of disdain for Morgan.

One person can't wait to see what the future will possibly bring us in this saga.

Reid herself appears to have zero regrets as she revels in the moment.

This Congressman Thinks You Can Buy Birth Control at Grocery Stores

Another day, another GOP congressman is in trouble with his constituents after insinuating that women can get birth control at grocery stores. The comment, made at a town hall, comes from Representative Glenn Grothman who has previously made inflammatory statements.

Grothman, who represents Wisconsin's sixth congressional district, held a town hall in Neenah, WI, on April 30. During the meeting, a constituent calmly explained to him that her daughter receives care at Planned Parenthood because her employer doesn't offer medical benefits. So she asks him, "Help me understand why you want to defund planned parenthood and please do not use abortion as an excuse."

Of course, Grothman begins his answer by stating that Planned Parenthood is the "biggest abortion provider in the country." He then goes on to suggest that women can receive birth control at pharmacies and grocery stores. The crowd lets him have it, yelling at him and shouting "Be honest." You can watch a clip of the exchange ahead.

This isn't the first and most likely won't be the last incendiary comment Grothman makes. He's previously said that he believes the government "bribes" people to stay single and have children to receive welfare benefits; that Pell grants shouldn't go towards low-income or first-year students; and that black people don't care about Kwanzaa. He is up for reelection in two years.

What a Watermelon! 20+ Recipes That Highlight the Juicy Fruit

9 Pantry Staples to Keep Stocked For Easy Summer Salads

Summer salads are all about the fresh produce, but the pantry ingredients are just as important. To make sure you season, dress, and bulk up your salad to its fullest potential, these are the essentials you'll want to keep stocked in your cabinet. Just add vegetables, toss, and devour.

  1. Good olive oil. Make sure you invest in real extra-virgin olive oil for salad dressings, like the honey-lemon-mint vinaigrette pictured above.
  2. Red wine vinegar. Most summery salads will require an acidic component in the dressing, and you can't go wrong with red wine vinegar. A quick red wine vinaigrette adds tang and brightness to lettuce.
  3. Balsamic vinegar. Use balsamic vinegar to make a homemade balsamic glaze for caprese salad.
  4. Freshly cracked black pepper. Just like roasted vegetables, raw vegetable salads need plenty of seasoning. Make sure you have a pepper grinder to top your salads with a kick of fresh pepper.
  5. Grains. Lettuce-based salads not your thing? Try a filling grain-salad recipe instead. Farro, quinoa, wild rice, and barley are grains that pair well with Summer ingredients like corn, tomatoes, and cherries.
  6. Canned beans. While fresh vegetables are the better choice for salads, it's a great idea to turn to canned beans for protein. Try a black bean, corn, tomato, and avocado salad or a white bean salad with kale pesto.
  7. Herbs de Provence. Herbs de Provence, a classic French blend of spices, is a combination of thyme, basil, savory, fennel, and lavender flowers. Its floral notes add layers of flavor to Summer salad dressings.
  8. Grainy mustard. Mustard acts as an emulsifier that helps oil and vinegar stay together in salad dressings. Keep a good-quality grainy mustard on hand for red wine vinaigrettes and garlic-dijon vinaigrettes.
  9. Flaky sea salt. Everything tastes better when finished with a pinch of flaky sea salt, including salads. Avoid serving a bland-tasting salad by making sure you have a good sea salt on hand, such as Maldon, which has large, pyramid-shaped flakes meant for sprinkling on top of dishes.

The Cast of Pretty Little Liars Has Changed So Much Since the Pilot

It has been a long, long journey to the end of Pretty Little Liars. The series premiered in June 2010, and now, seven years later, we've arrived at the series finale. Even though we're still clinging to the lingering hints about the last episode, we can't help but look back at everything we've gone through with Emily, Alison, Aria, Spencer, and Hanna. Just to show how far we've come, we captured each of the main characters (including Mona and Ezra!) as they appear in the pilot episode and compared them to their most recent appearance in the penultimate hour of the series. We excluded Caleb because he doesn't show up until episode 14 of season one, and we excluded Jenna because, even though she's in the pilot, she's been pretty MIA (for the most part) in the final 10 episodes. Let's see just how much (or how little) everyone else has changed.

Meet the 17-Year-Old Girl on the Cutting Edge of Hyperloop Technology

Elizabeth Awad, a 17-year-old student, sized up the competition at the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition on a cloudless January day in Hawthorne, CA. The town is home to SpaceX's rocket scientists. It's also besieged by Los Angeles's gridlocked traffic - but the technology Awad and others were designing was an effort to eliminate that problem.

She looked down the row of pop-up tents shading the Ph.D and master's students' designs. Aspiring engineers from the University of Wisconsin Madison, Technical University of Munich, and MIT tested their creations before inspections began. Awad's pod stood out in the crowd. It boasted Nickelodeon as a sponsor and bore the name of St. John's School. The teenager was on the only high school team in the finals for SpaceX's competition to design one of the first hyperloop pods - and, hopefully, one of the best.

When Awad matriculated from her sophomore to junior year at St. John's in Houston, she expected to take her first physics course, practice for the SATs, and maybe attend prom. She didn't think she'd be part of a team designing cutting-edge technology alongside students nearly a decade her senior. But when her older brother found out about the contest in 2015, that changed. She and five other St. John's School students joined forces to form Team HyperLift. After a school day full of lessons on grammar and history, Awad would rush to help her team, pulling up YouTube videos on how to make DIY industrial-strength glue and how to drill through metal. She had to teach herself how to mix and cure industrial epoxy. And she also handled her team's finance and public relations roles.

Theoretically, hyperloop could propel travelers at up to 800 mph.

Hyperloop itself became a global phenomenon within the technology industry in 2013 when SpaceX CEO Elon Musk suggested the idea of a high-speed form of travel that essentially puts passengers in a vacuum tube and shoots them along at airplane-like speeds. Theoretically, hyperloop could propel travelers at up to 800 mph, whisking them from San Francisco to Los Angeles in about a half hour.

Elizabeth, front right, takes a photo with her collaborators on Team HyperLift.

While SpaceX isn't developing a hyperloop system, Musk's explanation about how it could be developed spawned a technological race. SpaceX hosted a competition challenging students to develop some of the world's first working hyperloop pods. The second iteration of that competition - a speed test - will take place in August at SpaceX's headquarters in Southern California.

The fact that the competition was geared toward undergraduate, master's, and Ph.D students didn't faze Awad and her fellow St. John's School classmates, and it didn't stop them from advancing through several preliminary competitions to land at the finals this year.

"Being a girl should not stop you from doing STEM."

The week of the finals competition, her team set up their laptops and tool kits under their own tent and got to work. Awad and her team tested and retested their systems in the middle of SpaceX's parking lot, electrical wires from the company's vacuum test chamber stretching alongside their square of workspace. There was more than one moment, Awad says, when the team realized part of their pod needed to be changed on the fly. She says being able to talk with other teams to get advice was as much of a thrill as testing their pod.

"We weren't that worried about being the youngest. It was a little extra challenge for us," Awad said. "We learned so much just talking with graduate and undergrad teams."

For Awad, talking with female engineering students was especially meaningful. Awad and Katie Malcolm, the one other young woman on her team, knew they were facing some difficult odds. Nearly everywhere they looked, they saw men working on pods and men judging those pods. But seeing women working hard - and even leading some teams - was invigorating to the budding engineers.

Awad says it helped her feel confident that women "are here to stay" in the engineering world. "Being a girl should not stop you from doing STEM," she said, a hint of elation in her voice.

Awad says she had been interested in math since elementary school, and it continued into middle and high school. As she watched her older brother enter coding competitions, she began to plan her own trajectory into the world of equations and derivatives. She loved the puzzle that mathematics offered: there was one right answer to an equation with none of the messiness of political science and subjectivity of literature. She had already planned to amp up her focus in engineering when she got into her first physics class, but hyperloop found her first.

Now, she's using that knowledge by speaking with elementary and middle school groups about her experiences - especially girls.

"I'm just hoping to inspire younger women and younger students to pursue STEM," she said. She once spoke with an eighth-grade group and met one girl afterward, who told Awad she was inspired to join her school's engineering club.

More than a year later after forming their team, Awad and her collaborators arrived in Southern California for the SpaceX finals, finished pod in tow. After nearly a week of intense tests, the St. John's School team got their pod to levitate in the vacuum tube for about 20 seconds - a monumental achievement. They were one of the first groups to ever achieve this feat.

"It was an amazing feeling," Awad said. "I immediately went and hugged my brother. I started crying a little bit. All of our hard work for the year and a half, we were able to see it."

When the St. John's School team was announced as the ninth-place winner, the crowd that had gathered for the hyperloop pod competition erupted. Engineers, judges, SpaceX employees, and other competitors jumped to their feet. Teams that would go on to win second and first place gave the high-schoolers high-fives and hugs.

While the St. John's School team may not be able to attend the August competition for logistical reasons - some of their team is graduating high school - Awad plans to prepare her team and their pod for their next competition opportunity.

"Personally, I want to continue if there is a third competition," she said.

As for her future career plans? Awad says she's creating her list of colleges to apply to, with a focus on programs that could propel her into the hyperloop industry after college.

No matter where she lands, she says she knows she wants to be an engineer. "I hope to continue working on hyperloop throughout college, whether on an existing team or by starting a team," she said.

This Is the Diet That Helped Me Get a 6-Pack

Have you heard about those crazy detoxes where people eat only produce? Since I've been into doing experiments with exercise and my diet, I thought I'd give this a try. My plan was to eat fresh, frozen, and cooked fruits and veggies for two weeks straight - I know, kind of extreme, but I was up for the challenge! I wasn't aiming to lose weight, I just wanted to see how I felt.

My diet is already pretty clean. I'm mostly vegan, with the occasional backyard chicken egg, and although I started drinking a little coffee about two months ago, I rarely, if ever, drink alcohol. I eat bread, pasta, and whole grains, but I try to limit my sugar intake since it makes me feel crazy-bloated. I also do intermittent fasting, where I don't eat until noon.

On Wednesday I went shopping and filled my cart with vibrantly colored fruits and veggies - I was already feeling much brighter and clearer! I planned to start my produce-only that following Thursday. Three days later, after teaching my Sunday morning hot yoga class, I chatted with certified dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition (who happened to be taking my class) about my plan, and she shook her head. "You're not getting enough protein," she said. "Three days should be the maximum time anyone should eat only fruits and veggies." Although I was eating steamed edamame, she said I wasn't getting all the amino acids I needed. "In order to get a complete protein [on a vegan diet], you need to eat beans, nuts, and seeds."

Hallelujah, what a relief. Because honestly, three days on this diet was starting to suck. Although I started out intending to do this for two weeks, Leslie scared me a little. This was a good reminder that you should talk to an expert before you decide to change your diet drastically (whoops!). I modified it after three days, just so I could sustain it for the remainder of the two weeks, function in life, and not lose all the muscle I was working so hard to build lifting weights in CrossFit.

What I Ate

Days 1-3: Mostly raw fruits and veggies, with the addition of roasted sweet potato, steamed green beans, and edamame. No meat, no dairy, no caffeine (including green tea), no processed foods, no sugar, no fun no beans, no oil, no nuts or seeds, and no whole grains.

Days 4-14: I added raw almond butter, nuts, sunflower seeds, and a little flaxmeal. Throughout the 14 days, I made fruit and veggie smoothies (without protein powder or soymilk), huge salads dressed in fresh lemon juice and topped with fresh fruit, avocado, and sunflower seeds, and my fave, a modified version of this recipe for cauliflower rice and beans. I ate dried fruit and nut bars to satiate my need for cookies, and made cherry nice cream for my frozen treat cravings. Full disclosure - I probably ate three bananas and one avocado a day! And so much water! I wasn't downing a gallon of water a day, but I was pretty close to it.

How I Felt

In Days 1-3, there was a lot more fiber going on than I was used to, so I felt very full and pretty bloated. And for more details (because I know you want to know!), I had absolutely no issues with constipation. I wasn't needing to run to the bathroom eight times a day, but my poop was very soft. I was also a little tired, I assume from the lack of protein and my daily workouts. I also felt a little sad missing bread and whole grains and not being able to make baked goods, and I wasn't expecting to miss almond butter on my bananas and tofu as much as I did. But I was never hungry! I ate huge bowls of fruits and veggies, with tons of variety in flavors and textures. By the end of day three, I thought to myself, "You idiot! You have 11 more days of this self-torture!"

After talking to Leslie, and getting the go-ahead to include beans and nuts in my "detox," my body got used to the fiber and I had zero bloating. I also felt this newfound energy and was psyched to keep going because I was feeling so good. It actually surprised me! By the end of week one, I wasn't missing pasta, toast, maple oatmeal, popcorn, chocolate, or french fries - all foods I used to live for before starting this experiment.

Left: June 1; Right: June 15

The Benefits

The crazy amount of energy I experienced inspired me to really kick it up a notch in my 5:45 a.m. weekday CrossFit classes. I slept better and woke up feeling more rested, and my bloating issues disappeared. It made me realize that even though I've tested negative to a gluten intolerance, my body definitely prefers when I don't eat bread and pasta. I could also see more definition in my abs, and I even lost two pounds. I have been at the same weight for about a year, so the numbers on the scale shocked me. I wasn't intending to lose weight, but I'm glad I took photos to document the beginnings of the six-pack I've been working so hard at CrossFit to get.

How I Feel Now

The day after this two-week experiment ended, I had to celebrate. So I stopped into this new vegan bakery that opened up down the street and inhaled ate a maple-glazed doughnut and a few bites of a cinnamon bun. Then proceeded to enjoy veggie fried rice and tofu for lunch, and no-cheese pizza for dinner. Shocker - I felt kind of crappy, tired, bloated, and foggy-headed. While I definitely won't be going back to eating just carrots and bananas, I'm inspired to make a shift in my diet to eating less flour, less sugar, and more of the good stuff.

Kat Von D Reveals Her Own Saint + Sinner Beauty Secrets

Even without makeup on, Kat Von D looks like a drop-dead gorgeous badass when we sit down to chat at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, just minutes before the party for the long-awaited relaunch of her Saint + Sinner fragrances is about to begin. The legendary scents first came out a decade ago, and fans have been clamoring for them ever since.

"They were meant to be limited edition, and I swear, for the past 10 years, I have not stopped hearing from followers how much they've missed them," Kat said.

With notes of caramel, jasmine, and plum, Saint is definitely the more romantic of the two. Sinner is a bit more sultry and spicy, with hints of sandalwood, cinnamon, and patchouli. But most genius of all, both have notes of vanilla and are intended for layering, so you can feel saintlike and sinful all at once - which is part of what Kat finds so interesting.

"Duality is an undeniable human characteristic," she said. "We are all dual faceted, and this plays out in every form of self-expression, whether it's tattooing, makeup artistry, fashion, or the music we listen to." And, of course, the scents are vegan and cruelty-free, just like everything in Kat's beauty line.

Before she rushed off to get all dolled up for her party - which featured a confessional run by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, bubbling cauldron-like cocktails for the sinners (mocktails for the saints!), and guests like Amber Rose and Too Faced cofounder Jerrod Blandino - she spilled her own saint and sinner beauty habits and gave us a sneak peek into what's to come!

POPSUGAR: What do you think it is about the Saint + Sinner scents that have resonated so much with KVD Beauty fans?

Kat Von D: Well, I think that's what's so powerful about fragrance in general. Certain scents can evoke so much feeling, nostalgia, and trigger beautiful memories.

PS: Note-wise, are there any differences from the originals?

KVD: It was crucial to keep the fragrances themselves exactly the same. People can totally tell if you adjust notes even slightly, and I know how important it is to be able to wear the exact fragrance you're attached to. So for me, it was all about reinventing the bottle. I've grown so much in the last 10 years - emotionally, spiritually, and artistically - and I wanted that to show in the new design.

PS: What inspired it?

KVD: I wanted to create a special piece of treasure this time around. I wanted the bottle to feel good in your hands and look truly special on your vanity. So the overall shape was inspired by the shape of a human heart, and the filigree cage the glass sits in was inspired by some of my favorite styles of architecture and framework from the Baroque era.

PS: Does your mood dictate which scent you wear?

KVD: Personally, I like to start my day off as a Saint and graduate to my Sinner self!

PS: What kind of makeup look would you pair with the Sinner scent?

KVD: When I think of how I would do my own makeup if I was trying to achieve a sinner look, this might be surprising, but I would keep a really clean, sleek cat eye, just really sharp and dramatic, with a bold red lip.

PS: What about with Saint?

KVD: When it comes to Saint, I would keep with more a smoky, diffused dark eye, with a nude lip . . . because I think both looks in themselves have a duality to them. Most people would be like, "Sinner would be like goth, just black and black lipstick." It's like, no, I think that there's a saintliness to the sinner and vice versa.

PS: In your own personal beauty routine, do you have a habit that you might consider sinful?

KVD: Yes! OK, I don't feel I'm a diva in any way, but, like, I just can't bring myself to reuse eyelashes. I think it's gross. And so I only use them one time. Is that bad? [laughs] I feel like it's bad!

PS: So sinful! What about a habit that you would consider saintlike?

KVD: Well, I'm a stickler about never going to bed with makeup on. Like, all I can hear is my pores screaming, "Nooooooo!" So I'm a saint when it comes to cleansing.

PS: You've teased the Saint + Sinner palette on your Instagram. Are there any other Saint + Sinner products in the works?

KVD: There's an entire Saint + Sinner collection. Yes, the palette is epic. But wait till you see the new Saint + Sinner Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks and LIP LINERS!

I Did Intermittent Fasting For 1 Month and This Is What Happened

After six months of CrossFit, five days a week, my transformation wasn't as dramatic or amazing as I had hoped. I didn't get insanely ripped as planned - I still had extra weight around my stomach that I was hoping to ditch. So I was on a quest to find a way to keep up with the workouts I loved without having to add in extra cardio or drastically changing the foods I liked to eat.

Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Mark Popovich

I'd heard of intermittent fasting because my father had success doing the 5:2 plan: you eat normally five days a week, then eat 500 calories a day twice a week. But there's no way I would be able to eat so little and be able to exercise, work full-time, and take care of my family.

What I Did

I decided to try a version of the 16/8 plan, where you fast for 16 hours and eat for eight. This seemed to fit my lifestyle better. I'd stop eating around 7 or 8 at night, then wouldn't eat again until 11 a.m. or noon the next day. It basically meant that I'd skip breakfast, then eat three times the rest of the day, consuming roughly the same amount of calories I would if I'd been eating all day long.

"It [intermittent fasting] gets your body out of 'storage mode' and mobilizes fat stores for energy," said certified dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition. This means that without having a constant food source, your body will dip into the fat it already has stored.

How I Dealt With Hunger

I'm not gonna lie. The first two weeks were rough. Especially on days that I woke up at 4:45 a.m. to do CrossFit at 5:45 for an hour. The hardest part was coming home from class at 7:00 a.m. and having to prepare breakfast for my kids. The temptation of grabbing a banana or polishing off their crusts was almost unbearable. My husband was very supportive and took over breakfast duties so I wouldn't have to smell cinnamon toast. I'd just down a huge glass of water and keep myself busy getting them ready for school. Around 9 or 10 a.m., I'd make a cup of chai tea with a splash of cashew milk. Many intermittent fasters recommend caffeine to suppress hunger, usually black coffee. Also, any beverage under 50 calories still counts as fasting, and sipping on that totally helped, as well as plain water throughout the morning.

Those first two weeks, I found myself looking at the clock every 20 minutes, hoping it was noon already. I didn't really get any headaches as I thought I would, but I did find myself a little cranky - working alone from home was definitely a plus. But every day got a little easier. By the fourth week, I usually didn't start feeling hungry until 30 minutes before I was supposed to start eating.

One thing that's great about this 16/8 plan is that eating was more enjoyable. I was able to eat larger meals and ate anything I wanted to. Although my diet is already pretty healthy with no meat or dairy and hardly any refined sugars, I loved the freedom of being able to sit down to a huge lunch or dinner without having to make sure it was under a certain amount of calories. Knowing this made it easier to get through that fasting window, because I knew by noon I'd be sitting down to a plate full of yumminess.

What I Ate

Once I entered my feeding window, I made sure not to pig out. This wasn't too hard because I noticed that I'd feel fuller sooner than I did before I had starting intermittent fasting. Drinking water with each meal also helped.

12:00 p.m. (first meal): A big salad with beans and a slice of toast, or veggie lentil soup with toast, or avocado toast with tomatoes, salted sunflower seeds, and marinated tofu (#ilovetoast). I always finished with a small bowl of raspberries or strawberries just to satiate my sweet tooth.

2:30/3 p.m. (second meal/snack): I'd have a banana with crunchy almond butter, an apple with a big handful of raw almonds, a Cashew Cookie Larabar, or a plain dairy-free yogurt topped with some chopped fruit and nuts.

Image Source: POPSUGAR Photography / Jenny Sugar

5:30/6 p.m. (third meal): A big kale salad with roasted butternut squash and beans, or a veggie burger patty with roasted sweet potato and steamed broccoli, or some kind of tofu veggie stir fry with rice. Oh, and pasta. I had pasta at least once a week, usually this avocado pasta recipe with Trader Joe's Meatless Meatballs. I definitely did not give up carbs.

6:30/7:30 p.m.: After dinner, I usually went for some fruit, trail mix, or dates, but that third week I was craving sugar and indulged in some vegan cashew milk ice cream three nights in a row. Although so very delicious, I definitely didn't feel great after eating it, which reminded me why I had given up sugar. So that last week, I was back on track, focusing on eating food for fuel.

Did I Lose Weight?

Yes! I lost about two pounds, which for me was HUGE, since I wasn't seeing the scale budge otherwise. I was still doing CrossFit, so I know I was gaining muscle weight, but still the scale showed a decrease. I was amazed. The biggest thing, and I noticed this after the first week, was when I looked in the mirror, I could see more definition in my abs and upper back. That visual progress was what kept me going when I wanted to throw the towel in and drown myself in a bowl of oatmeal.

What Surprised Me

The thing that intrigued me the most about intermittent fasting, and the reason I wanted to try it, was that I knew I had a slight obsession with tracking my food. As someone who's been trying to lose weight on and off since I was in high school, I hated the fact that I was constantly thinking about food. What to eat, what not to eat, how many calories a food had, how many calories I'd eaten, and how many calories I wish I hadn't eaten. So much time was consumed by planning out what I was going to eat, shopping for food, making food, and then eating it. It was exhausting.

I thought not being able to eat all morning long would make me think about food more, and I already had an issue with wanting to eat all day long, but the opposite happened! Fasting all morning freed up my time and my mind for other thoughts. By the last two weeks, I wasn't thinking about food or checking the clock much at all during my fasting window. I even accidentally fasted too long a few times, realizing it was 1:30 p.m. and I hadn't eaten yet.

Other Benefits

Aside from slimming my belly and gaining a better relationship with food, I also found that I had better digestion and less bloating (because I wasn't overeating), slept well, and got another bonus - a clearer, more focused mind. My mornings felt more productive without the usual brain fogginess and fatigue I'd experience after eating.

Now What?

I'm going to keep going. I feel like I've finally hit a point where my body has adapted to this style of eating, and it's gotten easier to not eat all morning long, so I can better dial in my diet and exercise harder. I'm already psyched with everything I've experienced and can only imagine that there are more benefits to come.

Editor's note: Before starting intermittent fasting - or any new eating plan - be sure to talk to your doctor to make sure it's the right diet for you.

10 Summer Activities For Kids Under $10

Finding enough activities to keep kiddos busy throughout the whole Summer can become exhausting - and expensive. Save some money (and your sanity) with a few fun activities that cost almost nothing to set up and carry out.

Read through for 10 activities under $10 that your kids - and your wallet - will love.

  1. Berry picking. Rather than picking up overpriced berries from the grocery store, visit a local farm to pick your own to give your kids something fun to do.
  2. Fly a kite. A cheap kite won't cost you an arm and a leg, but it will definitely lead to hours of fun. There's nothing more exciting for kids than watching it fly in the sky!
  3. Water balloon fight. Grab a big bag of water balloons, spend an hour frustratingly filling them up, and watch as your children's smiling faces getting hit by balloons makes it worth the trouble.
  4. Paint pet rocks. Instead of using expensive arts and crafts kits, grab cheap paints and have your kids collect a bunch of rocks in the yard to decorate as their "pets."
  5. S'mores party. Buy some graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows, and start a fire in the backyard pit to make a delicious Summer snack.
  6. Pool noodle racing. For a fun indoor game, cut a pool noodle in half, lay the halves next to each other with the opening up, and use them as a racetrack for marbles.
  7. Build a moat. Using a roll of aluminum foil to hold the water in, let your kids go crazy designing a moat with the foil all around the outside perimeter of your house.
  8. Tarp 'n' slide. Slip 'N Slides can be expensive (and get ripped by the end of Summer anyway). Purchase a big tarp and pair it with a hose to give your children the gifts of slipping and sliding.
  9. Colored tape racetrack. Using colored tape on any floor, create a racetrack for your kids' cars (older kids can design the track themselves!).
  10. Make a soap cloud. Grab a bar of soap, throw it in the microwave to make it expand, and use cookie cutters and food coloring to make fun soaps to play with in the bathtub.

Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton's Friendship Should Be Put in History Books

Many years ago, in a land far, far away, two girls named Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton were best friends . . . and it was so f*cking iconic we don't even know where to begin. The two stars grew up together in Hollywood and went on to star in their reality show, The Simple Life, from 2003 until 2007. During that time, they basically ran pop culture in a world before social media. They rocked the best of early 2000s fashion, had enviable flip phones, and started phrases that you still probably use today (That's hot? Yep, them).

But things took a turn in 2005 when they abruptly stopped speaking. "It's no secret that Nicole and I are no longer friends," Paris said in a statement at the time. "Nicole knows what she did, and that's all I'm ever going to say about it." While neither party has ever confirmed the exact reason for their rift, it was rumored that Nicole showed Paris's infamous sex tape at a party. Sadly the two have never returned to their original glory, but they do seem to be on good terms now. Nicole told Andy Cohen in 2014 that she has nothing but love for Paris. "An idea of a true friend is somebody that's going to be there with you through and through," she said. "The short answer to this is, I haven't spoken to her in a while, but we are very good friends. I love her and I love her family. I have a lot of respect for her." While we wait for a revival of The Simple Life that will probably never come, look back at some of their best (and so beautifully random) friendship moments below.

Proof That Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos Have a Very Rare Kind of Love

When it comes to cute Hollywood couples, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos rank pretty high on the list. The two first met on the set of All My Children in 1995, and the following year, they eloped in Las Vegas. Since tying the knot, Kelly and Mark have welcomed three beautiful children: Michael, Lola, and Joaquin. And while they've never been shy about sharing gorgeous family photos on social media, the couple of more than 20 years have also had some pretty precious moments of their own over the years. Keep scrolling to witness their picture-perfect evolution.

I Had the Same Yoga Mat For Years, but This One Made Me Switch

I'm addicted to yoga, but I've never liked yoga mats. I have sweaty hands and feet during class and have struggled to find a mat, mat cover, or towel that helps prevent me from slipping in class. For years, I just sort of put up with it, despite my wrists aching in each class. But that's all changed, thanks to a recommendation from my yoga instructor Neil. He announced in an Equinox yoga class that the gym had purchased new mats from Jade Yoga and said these superabsorbent mats were great for sweaters. "You won't even need a towel," he promised.

I scrambled to grab one for myself to put it to the test. The mat felt slightly heavier than standard mats. When I went into Downward Dog, I felt instantly in love with the texture. It was like a cross between a sponge and a million tiny rubber bristles. The squishy material helps grip hands and feet . . . plus it absorbs all the moisture. I went the entire class without any towels and didn't slip or slide once. I couldn't believe it. I ran home to do more research.

The Harmony Mat goes for $75, which is somewhat steep, but it is eco-friendly. Made with natural rubber tapped from rubber trees, the mat contains no environmentally harmful PVC, EVA, or synthetic rubbers. Even better, it's made in the United States and complies with all US environmental, labor, and consumer protection laws. In addition, Jade has partnered with Trees for the Future, and for each mat sold, Jade plants a tree. One million trees have been planted so far. Well, 1 million and one, because I just purchased my very own Harmony Mat so I can tote it around to all of my yoga classes. I'm hooked and never going back.

All of the Sweet Things J Lo and ARod Have Said About Each Other

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have been dating since March, and the two don't seem to be slowing down any time soon. They made their red carpet debut at the Met Gala in May and have already gone on a self-dubbed "baecation" in Paris. The couple have even been spotted multiple times wearing matching outfits. Is there any bigger sign that these two are smitten?

After news broke that J Lo and ARod started dating, the two have publicly spoken about their relationship on multiple occasions. Alex, particularly, can't stop gushing about his leading lady, and we don't blame him - it's Jennifer freaking Lopez!

Your Handy Guide to the 6 Types of Bikini Bottoms

Just like how underwear comes in different styles, so too do bikini bottoms. The cheeky, the high waist, and the hipster are some terms you may have heard of. Not to get all technical, but when you shop for body-flattering swimsuits, you should be somewhat familiar with the different styles. They play a role in your overall look! Though bikini bottoms can be an amalgam of two styles (you can wear a high-waisted bottom that also has a deep-V cut), we've narrowed down the categories to six common selections. These are the ones you'll come back to time and time again.

Report Says Women at TMZ Were Tasked With Discrediting Trump's Sexual Harassment Accusers

President Trump's ever-growing list of scandals and dicey connections got a little longer this week when a new report revealed that TMZ was overzealously Team Trump from the very start, and that the outlet had charged a team of women with going after the women who accused Trump of sexual misconduct last year.

The celebrity gossip site has never been subtle about taking sides or promoting particular opinions. But according to an investigation authored by the editor in chief of ThinkProgress, Judd Legum, it would seem that TMZ was adamantly pro-Trump during the lead-up to the 2016 election. The reason, Legum suggests, is the longstanding relationship between the site's owner, Harvey Levin, and Trump. Back in March, it was revealed that many of the site's employees were incredibly uncomfortable not only with the two men's relationship, but also with the direction that TMZ's editorial coverage was taking as a result. Staffers said that in exchange for unrivaled access to Donald, Melania, and Trump's "satellites," TMZ often portrayed Trump in a positive light, focusing on small, seemingly irrelevant details both online and on the site's nationally syndicated TV show and eschewing critical coverage of the campaign. It should come as no surprise that TMZ also partnered with Fox News to do a Trump documentary last year, combining megaphone forces to blast good vibes towards the man who was elected president just a little over a week earlier.

Unfortunately, that was only the tip of the iceberg when it came to the amount of time and effort that the outlet was throwing into Trump PR.

In a particularly egregious move, Levin reportedly tasked TMZ's majority-female research team with digging up dirt on the women who came forward with sexual harassment allegations against Trump last year, attempting to make clear that Trump was not at fault and the potential victims were merely trying to ride on the candidate's coattails. But the stories that wound up centered on the myriad accusations against Trump that ultimately got the most coverage on TMZ were flimsy at best, seeking to cast his alleged victims as deviants or liars, and deflect national attention from the larger issues that the claims raised. Though Mindy McGillivrray standing in front of a Trump sign after voting or Jessica Drake opening a sex store the day before she went public were not going to change the facts as they were, they did serve as distractions in the days before ballots were cast. Ultimately, Legum argues, they served the same purpose as the "fake news" that Trump often lambasts other media outlets for putting forth.

While all this behavior raises larger ethical questions, the most disturbing aspect of TMZ's approach by far is that Levin chose to enlist women to undermine and attack other women.

If we've learned anything in these first six months of the Trump presidency, it's that Donald Trump has close connections to some incredibly powerful individuals - and that they're willing to go to some incredible lengths to protect the president's brand, regardless of what collateral damage it may cause. While TMZ may have been hard at work amassing a reputation recently for putting forth solid, verified journalism and earning headlines like "America, It's Time to Trust TMZ" for their coverage of the deaths of Prince and Michael Jackson, the site may have just set itself back to square one.

Snickers Hilarious New Labels Capture How You React When Hungry

Snickers certainly has been having a lot of fun turning its hunger-crushing candy bar packaging into meme-worthy jokes as it launches 25 brand new hunger symptoms that cover pretty much everyone from the "hot mess" to the "space cadet." It's part of the "You're Not You When You're Hungry" campaign that the company launched in 2015. You might remember seeing some funny bars with tags like "Grouchy," "Whiny," and "Feisty," when "not" sneaking an extra candy bar or two into your shopping cart at the checkout aisle. Now, Snickers has taken a note from the ever-changing lingo of our youth and added a whole slew of funny and relatable symptoms that both sum up all the feels we feel quite succinctly. Admittedly, I did have to urban dictionary newer terms like "Sawft."

Take a look at the complete list of new symptoms and decide for yourself which one speaks to you:

Befuddled, Bored, Comical, Crabby, Cray Cray, Dramático, Edgy, Ferocious, Hangry, Hot Mess, Klutz, Know-It-All, Knucklehead, Oddball, Pouty, Rebelde, Rowdy, Sawft, Sarcastic, Scatterbrain, Snarky, Space Cadet, Spunky, Stubborn, and Troublemaker.

They're also bringing back fan favorites: Confused, Cranky, Princess, and Sleepy.

6 Reasons I've Decided to Break Up With My Skinny Jeans

As a child, I vividly remember hating jeans. The nonstretchy, tight-around-your-ankle style of the early '90s would send me into a fit of red-faced rage, and I would beg my parents, even in the dead of Winter, "Please, can't I just wear a dress?!"

But years - and numerous pairs of Limited Too bell-bottoms - later, I found myself, once again, slipping into body-hugging pants: skinny jeans. It was 2005, and perhaps it was the fact that I prided myself on staying on top of trends. Maybe I was excited to add a new style to the mix. Or maybe my lifeguarding check was burning a hole in my Dooney & Bourke purse. Whatever the reason, the second I zipped those babies up, I was in love. I'd go on to rock my skinnies with a pair of pink ballet flats, feeling like the cutest little '00s teen to ever set foot in my high school.

My fashion story, however, does not have a happy ending. A few years ago, in the midst of a mirror-selfie phase, I realized something: I had started hating the way slim-fitting pants looked on me. Scrolling through my photos, my short legs seemed "stumpy." My hip area - a part of my body that I'm not very fond of - seemed highlighted and exaggerated. And despite opting for pairs with hints of spandex (read: jeggings), my legs always felt like they were suffocating. I couldn't wait to rip those pants off the moment I stepped inside my house.

So I splurged for some boyfriend jeans and, last Spring, embraced flares. Now in the midst of cleaning out my closet, I've come to the realization that the few pairs of skinny jeans I have left are wasting space. I'm giving them up for good this time. Read on for reasons you might want to do the same.

Bella Hadid's Slashed Tee Is a Sexy New Trend She's Starting

Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner touched down in Paris for Couture Week, and you can bet the duo bought plenty of Parisian-chic outfits to flaunt. While Kendall's peplum blazer and silk neck scarf certainly had French flair, Bella's denim separates were decidedly more cutting edge.

Bella's patent pumps and chainstrap logo Dior bag spoke to the mood, but we had eyes on her super cropped tee, which was so short that it bared a hint of her bra from underneath it. The slashed shirt look, which the supermodel has been on board with for some time, is something of a trend she just might be starting. Keep reading to take a closer look, and if you like what you see, dare to shop a few similar ripped tops we found.

This Is How to Eat Enough Protein on a Vegetarian Diet

There probably isn't a vegetarian on the planet who hasn't been asked "Are you getting enough protein?" While the amount is important - women need, on average, about 45 to 65 grams of protein a day - so is the type.

If you take a trip back to your old science class, you might remember that protein is made up of smaller components called amino acids, 12 of which are manufactured by the human body. Another nine, called essential amino acids, must be obtained from food. A complete protein is a protein that contains all of the essential amino acids. Animal proteins are complete, including red meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, and dairy, so what's a vegetarian or vegan to do? There are a few nonanimal sources that offer complete proteins, so it's important to get your fill of soybeans, blue green algae, hempseed, buckwheat, and quinoa if you're diet is meat-, milk-, or egg-free.

Then there are foods known as incomplete proteins, including beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds, peas, and corn. Combine two or more incomplete proteins and boom - you've got a complete protein. Enjoy them together in one meal or the combination can be consumed over the same day, such as black bean soup for lunch and brown rice with dinner. Here are some other food combinations that work:

  • Beans with whole grains: hummus (contains chickpeas and tahini, which is made from sesame seeds) and pita bread, red beans and rice, chickpea and quinoa veggie burgers on a whole-wheat bun, split pea soup with whole-grain bread, lentil barley soup, black beans and polenta, and tortillas with refried beans
  • Nuts or seeds with whole grains: sunflower seed butter on crackers, almond butter on toast, peanut noodles
  • Beans with seeds or nuts: hummus, salad topped with sunflower seeds and chickpeas

Note that having a varied vegetarian or vegan diet is key to getting enough protein. As long as you focus on eating enough calories and consuming a variety of plant-based foods, like legumes, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds throughout the day, chances are you'll be getting the nutrients you need.

If You Prefer Emily Ratajkowski's Bikinis, You Obviously Haven't Seen Her Baywatch Suit

Don't get us wrong, Emily Ratajkowski looks good in a two-piece. In fact, the supermodel's come up with so many ideas for mixing and matching her bikinis, we can barely keep up. But while vacationing with her friends Bella Hadid, Elsa Hosk, Hannah Ferguson, Lais Ribeiro, Hailey Baldwin, and Rose Bertram in the Bahamas, Emily pulled a style switch-up.

Her red Solid & Striped design was fitted and sleek, with not a cutout in sight, and the plunging neckline was a touch sexy - very simple, very effortless, very Baywatch. Emily completed her look with a dainty chain necklace, allowing us full focus on her one-piece. While clearly, most of her pals prefer classic tops and bottoms, Emily is making a case for coverage at the beach. Read on for a look, then shop similar silhouettes for yourself.

Yes, Athleisure's Still in - but It Doesn't Look Like It Used To

In the beginning, when the buzz word "athleisure" was added to the dictionary in 2016, the look was very much about staying chic and comfortable. Monochrome separates, detailed leggings, and sports bras made for simple outfits that, most of the time, were meant to blend in. In stylized athleisure, you could hop from the gym to brunch without sticking out in either location - and you might even receive a compliment on your leather baseball cap along the way.

Make no mistake, athleisure is still in. In 2017, it's just gotten a bolder update. Some of our favorite influencers like Hailey Baldwin, Bella Hadid, and Sofia Richie have shared standout examples of ways to rock comfortable items in a very "look-at-me" sort of way. Oftentimes, it's all about accessorizing with a handful of jewels or a pair of boots. See how it's done ahead, then shop the newest form of athleisure.
