A Trainer Says This Is How Many Squats You Should Do Each Day For a Bigger Booty
Knowing the right exercises for a rounder backside is only half the battle, because you can't achieve booty gains without consistency. It also helps to know how often you should be working out your butt to see a difference in shape and size. Luckily, the answer is totally doable. Clarence Hairston, Ignite master trainer, NASM certified personal trainer, and AGM of Fitness at The Bay Club Company, told POPSUGAR that "women who are trying to build fuller glutes should start with 50 bodyweight squats a day."
And you don't have to complete all 50 in one set. Clarence says you can split them up in ways that best fit your schedule. Once you've got the basics down, start adding weights and resistance, and try other squat variations and lower-body exercises. "Most importantly, don't stop challenging yourself and you'll see the results," he said.
Lastly, just like any other body transformation, growing a bigger butt also requires changing your diet. You'll want to increase your caloric intake as well as your daily amount of protein. Combine all of these tips and continue to challenge your body as you go!

Back to Basics: This Fundamental Workout Will Help You Strengthen at Any Level
Introducing strength training into your workouts can definitely seem like an intimidating move, but there are plenty of ways to ease into this new part of your fitness journey. For one, you don't have to jump straight into barbell work. Strength training encompasses bodyweight exercises that can also be enhanced with dumbbells. To help you narrow down your routine to the best beginner moves, Corey Phelps, nutrition expert, NASM personal trainer, certified BASI Pilates teacher, TRX and Spinning instructor, and creator of the fitness app Cultivate365, shared a strengthening workout that can help any level master fundamental movements.
Corey's biggest recommendation: "Keep it simple, start small, and build from there," she told POPSUGAR. "If you do too much in the beginning, you may end up overly sore, which can be discouraging and ultimately hinder you from keeping a consistent schedule."
Her workout below targets major muscle groups and serves as a helpful way to measure your progress. Once you're able to complete 15 reps with ease, it's time to move onto heavier weights.
The workout:
- Squats
- Walking lunges
- Shoulder presses
- Bicep curls
- Overhead triceps extensions
- Reverse abdominal crunches
Complete 10 to 12 reps for each move for a total of four sets. Not challenging enough? Increase your reps to 12 to 15 for a total of five sets.

While you're on your journey to get leaner, you still want to include these effective ab exercises to strengthen your core, and once your belly looks slimmer, you'll reveal your sculpted abs.

Cannabis 101: Everything You Need to Know About Weed
As marijuana use continues to become legalized around the country (and most recently, Canada), it's no wonder a rising number of adults are open to learning more about it. Gone are the days when one used to just ask their dealer for "whatever you've got." Modern cannabis has grown to encompass hundreds of unique strains that come in a variety of consumption methods and doses that fit the needs of every type of consumer. But all this comes with some required knowledge, like the difference between a sativa and indica, for example. If cannabis has recently piqued your interest, read on to get fully educated ahead.
Where is recreational marijuana currently legal?
- Alaska
- California
- Colorado
- Maine
- Massachusetts
- Nevada
- Oregon
- Washington
What's the difference between a sativa and an indica strain?
Think of sativas as your daytime weed; great for being active and social. Indicas on other hand are ideal to ingest before bed, as they generally make you sleepy, or for a relaxing night in. Hybrids offer the best of both worlds, although there are sativa-dominant hybrids and indica-dominant hybrids, as well.
What forms does cannabis come in?
- Flower/bud - for smoking or vaping
- Hash oil cartridges - for vaping
- Edibles (cookies, chocolates, chips, infused beverages, etc.) - for consuming
- Hash or wax (cannabis concentrates) - for dabbing (heating on a hot surface)
Weed can also be infused in a variety of products including bath salts, lotions, and salves.
What's the best consumption method for beginners?
I always recommend newbies to smoke or vape for their first time because the effects are instant and therefore easier to gauge. Edibles can take 30 minutes to two hours to kick in, which often results in impatient overdoses. Edibles are also more difficult to measure unless they come in the form of low- and precisely dosed chocolates or gummies. I'd also stay away from bongs for your first go.
How much should I smoke/eat?
Always, always start low and go slow. See how your body reacts after one hit and wait about half an hour before taking your next puff. Most strains range between 18 and 22 percent THC, but you may want to look for varieties ranging on the lower end with noticeable amounts of CBD. As for edibles, start around 2 to 5mg THC.
What's the difference between THC and CBD?
There are a hundred-plus cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, but the most well-known are CBD and THC. THC is responsible for making you feel "high," while CBD is nonpsychoactive (at least in recommended doses) and counteracts some of THC's adverse effects such as paranoia. Together, they produce that euphoric and relaxing high we enjoy.
What is CBD oil?
It's a cannabidiol (CBD) extract that's most popularly taken orally in the form a tincture. It doesn't have a mind-altering effect (unless you take more than the recommended dose) and is known to help with anxiety, sleep, pain, and epileptic seizures. It's all-natural and safe and legal as long as its packaging specifies that it's "hemp-derived." You also don't have to worry about CBD showing up on a drug test, either. Although CBD oil is most popular, it can also be enjoyed in the form of vapes, topicals, and edibles.
What will I feel when I'm high?
It really depends on the strain and the individual, but you can expect to feel all or some of the following: uplifted, euphoric, giggly, hungry, sleepy, relaxed, calm, and/or creative. You may also notice pain relief. Additionally, I always recommend that people smoke or ingest weed in a safe space with people they're comfortable with, as some adverse effects can include paranoia and anxiety.
What should I do if I get too high?
Don't worry - this happens to even the most seasoned stoners. Taking CBD has shown to be effective in reversing the adverse affects of THC, but if you don't have any CBD readily available, the most important thing to do is to get as comfortable as possible. Take deep, slow breaths and reduce any stimuli (turn down/off music, TV volume, etc.), or look for a quiet space if you're not at home. Being in crowded settings can induce more anxiety, so try to remove yourself from hectic situations. Unfortunately, the only thing you can really do is ride it out or sleep it off.
What are the benefits of cannabis?
The number of cannabis's medicinal benefits is endless, but here are the biggest, to name a few:
- Antiepileptic
- Antianxiety
- Antinausea
- Pain relief
- Anti-inflammatory
- Sleep aid
- Antispasticity (generally for multiple sclerosis)
- Antipain (nociceptive, neuropathic, and central)
Is marijuana addictive?
Smoking weed once or a even a few times will not result in an addiction. When we consulted a neuroscientist, Josh Kaplan, PhD, about the risks of regular usage, he shared that cannabis dependency is possible but not common. Around 10 percent of users become dependent from frequent consumption, but only rare cases of "true cannabis addiction" have been reported so far. But it's also worth noting that the risk is increasing as modern products contain more THC. One group that shouldn't use cannabis is adolescents, as cannabis use can impact their cognitive development.
Are there any health risks that come with marijuana consumption?
The long-term consequences of cannabis on cardiovascular risk are still unclear. According to Dr. Kaplan, "High amounts of THC may have negative long-term consequences on the heart by promoting plaque development" - however, "CBD seems to be protective against this." Additionally, these tests were conducted with synthetic versions of THC, which are often stronger than the THC found in cannabis. Marijuana smoke does contain carcinogens and cocarcinogens, but it has far less risk for lung complications compared with cigarettes, and the risk can be improved once you stop. Additionally vaping has shown to be less harmful than smoking as vaporizers heat instead of burn, though there are limited studies.

I Experienced a Crystal Light Bath, and Here's What Happened
When I got the opportunity to experience a crystal light bath treatment, I had no idea what to expect. Would there be water? Would I be showered in amethyst? Ouch. To answer both those questions, the energy-healing treatment involved crystals, color, light, and vibration - and neither of what I had originally anticipated. I met with Mytrae Meliana, a sound and energy healer and a women's empowerment teacher, in a beautifully lit room in San Francisco's Marina district, where I received my first crystal light bath. Before I climbed onto a comfortable massage table, I was instructed to set an intention and to let it go. I then spent the next 45 minutes with my eyes closed as a crystal-pronged apparatus stood over me.
The machine was quiet, but its colorful lights flickered throughout the treatment. Mytrae explained how crystals can amplify intention, thought, and emotion, and that by the very end of my session I would feel restored and at peace. Unexpectedly, I quickly fell into a deep sleep, which is apparently very common. Though everyone's experience varies, some report feeling tingling sensations or emotional release.
According to Mytrae, who was introduced to this work by a spiritual healer from Brazil in 2009, a crystal light bath can have the following benefits:
- It can cleanse, rejuvenate, and align your chakras.
- It can clear and balance your energy field.
- It can heal you on an emotional, mental, spiritual, energetic, and karmic level.
- It can provide you with insight, guidance, and soul perspective.
- It can restore balance, harmony, joy, and peace.
- It can build and evolve your crystalline.
The apparatus featured seven polished Vogel quartz crystals and are set to suspend above your seven chakras, or energy center. "Vogel crystals, cut to the teachings of Marcel Vogel, are specially cut to attract, amplify, and transmit the Universal Light Force into your energy fields, including chakras and meridians," Mytrae told POPSUGAR. Vogel was a research scientist who worked at IBM for 27 years, where he realized that crystals have the ability to amplify energy fields. But long before then, crystals had been used for ages by shamans and healers and continue to be used for healing today. "Our body is 90 percent water, which is crystalline in nature - there's a direct resonance," Mytrae said. And because crystals can absorb and emit energy, they're able to help release anything that wasn't originally part of our "cellular blue print."
The seven chakras' functions include:
- Grounds and centers.
- Deals with sexuality and creativity.
- Deals with power and will.
- Relates to the heart, love, empathy, and compassion.
- Relates to communication and self-expression.
- Relates to insight and intuition.
- Connects to spirit.
The experience is meant to serve as a release. Whether your energy blocks are caused by stress, environmental toxins, or emotion or mental distress, a crystal light bath is said to promote better energy flow between your body and the universe. And because it helps broadcast your intention, Mytrae says that it can be great for creating new opportunities and connections.
When I woke up, I definitely did feel recharged from my power nap. Though I didn't feel a noticeable difference by the end, the point of the treatment is to help you renew. So many of us are in need of a break from our busy lives that sometimes, a crystal light bath is exactly what we need to achieve a restful experience.
I'm a Trainer, and These Are My 16 Favorite Ab-Sculpting Exercises
As a trainer, one of the most common areas my clients and friends always want to strengthen and tone is their abdomen. I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't let them - and all of you - know that spot reduction won't help you lose fat and build muscle anywhere, especially in your stomach.
It's also important for me to remind you that ab workouts alone won't transform your stomach. As annoying as it may be to hear, "abs are built in the kitchen." Better yet, ab visibility is built in the kitchen. It's going to take a combination of clean eating and the right workouts (I prefer high-intensity exercises to burn fat) to begin to see a change in your abs.
The options of exercises to strengthen and sculpt your core are endless, and these are my favorite to program into my clients' and my own workouts. Make your very own ab workout by choosing four to six of the following moves, completing each exercise for 30 seconds each for a total of four rounds.

9 Podcasts That Make Me Look Forward to My Morning Commute
I love starting my day with a 30-minute commute by foot, partially because it gets my blood flowing and partially because it gives me time to listen to podcasts. I've come to love a handful of podcast series that I look forward to playing when I'm in the mood to hear a thought-provoking conversation instead of music. The range includes politics, badass women, helpful cooking convos, and insightful life advice (Thank you, Oprah). There's a Peanuts-Themed Hotel in Japan, and Good Grief, It's the Cutest Place to Stay!
A Peanuts-themed hotel just opened in Japan, and it takes nostalgia to a whole new level. Located in the Kobe prefecture of the Setouchi region of Japan, the Peanuts Hotel is bursting with details that fans of the Charles M. Schulz comic will adore. There are 18 private rooms, and each one showcases a different Peanuts comic.
Each of the Peanuts Hotel's three floors has a different theme: "Imagine," "Happy," and "Love." Throughout the halls and on the walls of the rooms, you'll see various illustrations and quotes from the series, like, "Happiness is a warm puppy." The meticulous details are truly incredible. Even the bottles of shampoo have Snoopy's face on them! The hotel's opening happens to align with Snoopy's birthday on Aug. 10.
Guests can also eat at the onsite Peanuts Cafe and Peanuts Diner, which offer dishes like Charlie Brown's Choco-Banana Baked Alaska and Lucy's Cheesecake With Poppin Candy. A comfortable Snoopy sits on top of the Peanuts Hotel's logo alongside the phrase, "Where guests feel comfortable." It looks like that motto definitely rings true. See photos of the hotel's exterior and interior ahead, and prepare to want to book a visit ASAP.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden Reunited For Their First Public Appearance Since the Inauguration
Just when you think Barack Obama is already fully living his best life and things can't get any better, he one-ups himself. Days after a fun-filled night at Beyoncé and JAY-Z's concert, the former president met up with his former VP (and lifelong best friend, probably) for lunch. Obama and Biden stopped by the Dog Tag Bakery in Washington DC on July 30 to grab a bite to eat and meet with members of the bakery's fellowship program.
While the political pair privately golf together, this is the first time we've seen them in a joint public appearance since President Trump's inauguration. Thanks to photos shared on social media, it looks like they're happier than ever to be reunited. The Dog Tag Bakery, an establishment that aims to "empower our veterans and military families," shared a photo of Obama and Biden, and a video also surfaced of them ordering together. Check out the clip above - and try not to tear up when Biden calls Obama "the boss" - then keep reading to see another video of their sweet reunion. Think they chatted about Biden's potential presidential bid?
Disney's New Necklace Is the Socially Acceptable Way to Wear Your Rose Gold Ears Every Day
Disney just released a new necklace that has a lot going for it: it's rose gold, sparkly, and, most importantly, in the shape of those sequined rose gold Minnie ears that spawned a social media craze and inspired several subsequent products. On June 17, blogger Disneylifestylers spotted the necklace at Disneyland, and it's since been found at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom, too.
Though it's an official Disney product, the trendy piece is actually designed by Rebecca Hook. The jewelry designer sells several of her elevated pieces in the park, as well as online. According to other visitors who saw it in the park, however, the necklace retails for $125. If you're visiting Disneyland sometime soon, you might want to scope out every jewelry shop for this rose gold addition, because we think it's safe to say this one will sell like crazy once word gets around.

US-Based Airlines Ranked From Worst to Best
It's taken me a lot of years to get to the point where I feel loyal to specific airlines. In the past, I always went with whatever was the cheapest and best fit my schedule. While I still do that to an extent, I also try to stick with the same one or two airlines when I fly domestic, because I've flown with them enough to feel like they've really earned my business. I've also spent enough time on airlines and had not-so-great experiences to not waste my time with them anymore.
I've taken stock of all my flying experiences to put together a definitive ranking of all the US-based airlines. My absolute favorite has been the same for as long as I've been traveling, but the ones in the middle have all changed around over the years. Keep reading to see where my favorites fall - and yours, for that matter.

You Can Stay in the Real-Life Villa From Under the Tuscan Sun - No Renovations Required
Looking to reinvent your life by running away to Tuscany and buying a dilapidated villa on the spot? Well, even if you're searching for something a touch more low-key, you can live out that fantasy by staying in the real-life villa at the center of 2003's Under the Tuscan Sun. The house has since undergone a discernible renovation - presumably not done by Diane Lane - and it is currently available for rent through Luxury Retreats.
Located in Cortona, Italy, the stunning Villa Laura, named Villa Bramasole in the movie, features 10 bedrooms, lush gardens, a wine cellar, and a pool. Then, of course, there are those countryside views that are enough to make you consider uprooting your life and moving to Italy. With enough room to host 20 guests, however, Villa Laura is not entirely wallet-friendly, as the nightly rate ranges from $2,385 to $4,090, depending on the season.
If Under the Tuscan Sun is still your go-to pick-me-up flick, or you have a Pinterest board dedicated to your dream Italian getaway, then maybe it's time to round up some friends and head to Villa Laura. At least it'll already be nice and renovated when you get there, right?

5 Harry Potter Secrets You Definitely Didn't Know . . . Until Now
Though she may seem like a muggle, J.K. Rowling is definitely magical. A former waitress without any formal training in creative writing, the author of the Harry Potter series created a world where anything (except maybe Snape investing in decent shampoo) is possible.
There is a book that will excite fans worldwide: an in-depth bibliography about the author's literary journey. JK Rowling: A Bibliography 1997-2013 by Philip Errington is so detailed that Rowling described it as "slavishly thorough and somewhat mind-boggling." Basically, you should be happier than Hagrid in an exotic pet store at this news.
The bibliography, which follows Rowling throughout the process of penning each entire Harry Potter book, is a veritable Diagon Alley of previously unknown facts about the series. If you don't have time to read it to find out all of the secrets, don't worry - you can check out this list for a few that even Hermione wouldn't know.

Having Grown Up Without Siblings, I Refuse to Have Just 1 Child in the Future
Since as early as I can remember, I've always wished I had a sibling. Part of the reason is inexplicable - just this longing that I've felt for a brother or sister my entire life - and the other part is made up of smaller reasons, mainly that all of my best friends and cousins grew up with siblings and I was never not envious. Because of the sense of loss I felt growing up an only child, I've always vowed never to have just one child myself.
Simply put, I'd never want my only child to grow up feeling the way I did - like I was missing out on something so huge and important. My best friend, Meagan - also an only child - has always felt as close to a sister as I'll ever get, and I know if I had an only child, they'd find their chosen siblings in truly great friends as well, but that just doesn't feel like enough. Some people who grow up as their parent's lone child completely thrive in being the one and only, but that wasn't my experience, and it may not be my child's either.
I'd never want my only child to grow up feeling the way I did - like I was missing out on something so huge and important.
I feel so passionately about having at least two children that before I met my boyfriend, I'd literally write men off after the first date if they noted that they'd only want one kid in the future. And while I fully understand (and think about often) that I could struggle with conceiving, that doesn't affect my personal decision in the slightest. Whether I'm able to have biological children or my partner and I adopt, there's just no way I can slice it where I see myself raising an only child.
All this said, here are even more reasons I'd never want to have an only child.
I Never Gave Much Thought to My Breast Milk Until I Had It Tested
The amount of rest you get between delivering your baby (regardless of the method) and needing to begin breastfeeding feels infinitesimal; the responsibilities mothers experience truly are unending. Like many mothers, I struggled with breastfeeding, ultimately enlisting the help of two lactation specialists and a dermatologist before deciding that I'd need to give up breastfeeding and exclusively pump instead. Producing enough milk was hard - my daughter always seemed to want more than I was able to make - but I stuck with it and worked hard at building my supply.
When my daughter was roughly 6 weeks old, Stephanie Canale, a physician at UCLA, reached out to me about her company Lactation Lab, which focuses on providing mothers with nutritional analysis of their breast milk. Curiosity got the best of me, and I asked for a kit. A few days later, it arrived at my doorstep. I collected a small amount of breast milk, froze it, and sent the sample off to be tested.
I told myself that I'd use the analysis as a learning experience about my own health and not let it steer me down a path of guilt about nutrients I might ostensibly be lacking.
I told myself that I'd use the analysis as a learning experience about my own health and not let it steer me down a path of guilt about nutrients I might ostensibly be lacking. Which is exactly what Canale wants women to do with the data. "I had the idea of testing the nutrients in breast milk because my infant daughter wasn't gaining weight, despite getting enough milk," she shared with me when I asked her why she created the company. "My daughter had stopped growing and would not have a bowel movement for 10 days at a time. I felt I was starving her despite giving her enough milk, so I knew there could be an issue with the quality of my breast milk." Wanting to know what was in her breast milk was what sparked the idea to create Lactation Lab.
There's a New Cool-Looking Snack at Malls Called Dragon's Breath - But Is It Safe?
Growing up in New Jersey, it was pretty common for us kids to get dropped off at the malls (despite not having much money to our names) and wander from store to store and hang out in the food court. Parents didn't worry much then. But now, thanks to a new dessert fad lurking in shopping centers, the mall is up for debate. Dragon's Breath, a liquid-nitrogen-infused cereal treat that makes it look like a person is breathing fire, is a cause for concern.
Although we understand how the snack can easily appeal to kids at first, it might not be the safest treat, especially if your child has asthma.
Racheal Richard McKenny, a mom of two from Florida, learned this first-hand when her son, Johnny, had a near-fatal asthma attack shortly after ingesting Dragon's Breath he bought from a mall kiosk. And while Racheal did her due diligence by warning other parents about the snack that almost cost her son his life, you can never be too safe. Thankfully, the particular vendor in question was quick to update the asthma notice to prevent another incident from happening.
According to Today, Johnny wasn't the first child who needed to be hospitalized after eating Dragon's Breath. Back in 2017, a 14-year-old girl severely burned her hand while trying to eat the dessert at the Pensacola State Fair.
"I would urge caution for anybody around liquid nitrogen, particularly children."
"The ER doctor had to cut it open, cut away the dead skin and get the infection out," Tina McArthur, the victim's grandmother, told Today. "[The doctors] said had we not come in and got her finger treated she could have possibly lost her thumb."
Dr. Reed Caldwell, an assistant professor at Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine at NYU Langone Health, agrees that any food with liquid nitrogen poses a threat to consumers.
"First is rapid significant damage to the skin and body if swallowed," said Dr. Caldwell. "Liquid nitrogen is what's used by dermatologists to burn things off skin so we know it can be destructive to tissue."
He also explained that liquid nitrogen displaces oxygen, which can lead to suffocation and even death, not to mention permanent cornea damage if it splashes in your eye. "I would urge caution for anybody around liquid nitrogen, particularly children," he warned.
And keep in mind that kids aren't the only ones in danger when it comes to liquid nitrogen. Just last year a man in India developed a hole in his stomach after drinking a beverage with the substance in it.
The verdict? Steer very clear of Dragon's Breath - or really anything that contains liquid nitrogen - because no one likes an impromptu trip to the hospital.

9 Halloween Games That Will Make Any Sleepover a Spooky Delight
If you love to throw parties for your kids, Halloween is the perfect time to pull out all of the stops. Unlike other holidays, Halloween is all about the theme, the costumes, and the candy. Many times, these parties can turn into sleepovers (sometimes you plan it that way, and sometimes your kid begs you to let their friends stay over). And when that happens, it's so fun to have a few creepy games on hand to enhance the Halloween mood (just make sure all of the kids are old enough and can handle it!). Whether it's a slightly spooky one that uses a Ouija board to connect to the spirit world or a chanting ritual in the mirror (I'm pretty sure I still can't order more than two Bloody Marys at brunch), there's a handful of games that will keep everyone talking well after Oct. 31. Keep reading to see them all now . . . if you dare.
There’s Halloween Decor, and Then There’s Pier 1 - 26 Pieces You Probably Won’t See Anywhere Else
What good is Halloween without the decor? It's like having a dinner party without any alcohol. Sorry, why are we here?
Part of what makes Oct. 31 so much fun is the amount of time we spend prepping for the big day. The cobwebs along the windowsills, the inflatable ghosts that are so big they practically swallow your front lawn, and the creative trinkets we arrange inside are almost more satisfying than the day itself. Almost.
To whet your appetite, we have Pier 1's spooky assortment, and it's better than ever. We found 26 items that are a must-see, from a trio of meditative skeletons to bat-shaped glimmer lights.
Regal Cinemas Will Do Sensory-Friendly Screenings of Christopher Robin This Weekend!
Seeing a movie in theaters is such a fun experience, but for children with sensory processing disorders, autism, and other special needs, as well as those who aren't big fans of the dark or a lot of noise, the cinema isn't the most comfortable place to be. Because every child and their family should be able to enjoy a brand-new movie in theaters, Regal Cinemas is introducing the My Way Matinee program, a sensory-friendly movie-going experience that will feature lower sounds and brighter lights in the theaters.
In addition to the volume and lighting adjustments, those visiting the theaters for these once-a-month showings will be able to dance, sing, and shout along with the characters in the films. Each My Way Matinee show will begin at 10:30 a.m. local time, and the best news? Tickets will only cost $6.50.
"Regal strives to be 'The Best Place to Watch a Movie,' and that means creating positive, lasting memories for all moviegoers," Sandra Heinig, director of public relations at Regal, said in a press release. "We are continually expanding this program to include even more theaters, because we want every movie fan to feel comfortable and have fun at Regal."
Regal Cinemas has held sensory-friendly screenings for a number of new releases this Summer, with Aug. 4 showings of Christopher Robin being its last one listed. Visit the My Way Matinee information page to find out if your local Regal is participating in the program. (And check out which kids' movies you can stream on Netflix right now!)
I'm That Overly Cautious Mom Who Throws Away All Halloween Candy That Isn't Totally Sealed
Hello! Allow me to introduce myself. I'm that super-overprotective mom who is paranoid AF. Especially around Halloween, when so many scary things can happen (literally). I need only have heard one story about one kid eating a piece of candy that was tampered with, even if it was way back in 1987 when I was a kid myself, to unleash some corporate-level quality control on my own kids' stash before they dig in.
Before my kids could so much as utter one word of protest, I had already tossed those repurposed cocoa solids in the closest garbage bin.
I operate under the assumption that a parent can never be too cautious when your children are basically taking candy from strangers. So, yes, every year, my kids have to wait while I inspect their chocolate bars and lollipops for, oh, I don't know, razor blades. If I happen to see a wrapper that isn't totally sealed (anything wrapped at the sides is gone) or looks iffy, like someone removed it and rewrapped it, or even just lifted up the edge, I toss that peanut butter cup or mini licorice pack faster than you can say "trick-or-treat."
Not that I encounter too much suspicious candy, but believe me, it's out there. Last year, my kids brought home several chocolate eggs in Christmas wrappers. Thinking about it logically, best case scenario, that candy was 10 months old. Indeed, a quick inspection inside the red and green foils revealed some rather questionable-looking chocolate that was covered in white powder. Before my kids could so much as utter one word of protest, I had already tossed those repurposed cocoa solids in the closest garbage bin.
Here's the thing: My kids don't need all the candy they score on Halloween anyway. Their teeth are probably already going to rot out from the stuff I let them keep that's totally on the up and up. I simply fail to see the need to keep candy on hand that gives me any reason to doubt whether it's safe for my children to eat.
Most of the time, my kids don't even notice I've edited their bounty and removed any candy I've either never heard of or that could possibly have been tampered with, no matter how unlikely. And even if they gave me a hard time, I'd tell them what my mom used to tell me: "It's better to be safe than sorry." One day, when they're parents, they'll understand.

This Woman Cleaned Her Entire Pool With 1 Magic Eraser, but Not in the Way You're Thinking
After Lisa Pack saw a too-good-to-be-true hack for cleaning pools on Facebook, she knew she had to try it. Knowing that her pool water often gets green fairly easily, there was nothing to lose in trying the simple trick: putting a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser in the filter bucket overnight. Yes, that's literally the whole hack.
"Everyone knows my pool is green by this time of the year. . . I figured why not try it, I had a box of Mr. Clean Magic Erasers laying around. Now mind you, my pool wasn't green, but it looked like it was getting cloudy. I threw one of these in the skimmer basket and holla bing, holla boom, the cloudiness left and my sponge looks like this," Lisa wrote alongside a photo of herself holding the green Magic Eraser in front of her clean pool. "I'm pretty excited to think something so cheap could help so much."
Cheap, simple, and effective - all of the words we like to describe our cleaning tips with.
After Just an Hour With a Lactation Consultant, I Became a Milk Machine - but It Wasn't Easy
It was 11:30 a.m. when the in-home lactation consultant (LC) showed up at our house. She was carrying an enormous briefcase, which I later learned housed a scale that we would use to weigh my 6-day-old baby. My husband had emailed the LC while we were still in the hospital, after the labor and delivery floor's own in-house lactation consultant suggested I get more help with breastfeeding. "More help" was the watered down version. I needed ALL of the help.
I had a number of things going on. I couldn't get my daughter to latch for more than a few seconds before the pain became too intense; pumping not only gave me unmanageable anxiety, but during and after it felt like tiny needles were poking my nipples; and I wasn't producing enough milk. I walked the LC through all of this before giving her a nursing demo so she could assess. After making a few adjustments to my nipple shield and body positioning, my daughter and I got a solid latch going. But it wasn't without pain. The session carried on for its full hour, and I was left with more questions, so I booked a second appointment, this time with a nearby LC who came recommended.
A few days later, I marched into the second LC's office with my mom and daughter in tow, ready to get some answers. I wanted her to cure the pain, explain why I was feeling so anxious every time I tried to nurse or pump, and help me produce more milk. An easy ask, surely.
After an hour in that LC's office, I left with all of that and more. Read on to see what she taught me.
My Mom Never Played With Me as a Kid, and It Affects the Way I Parent
My mom never played with me when I was a kid. She never got on the floor to play Barbies. She never played house or school with my brothers and me. She didn't create arts and crafts with us. And you know what? We all turned out just fine. We love our mother more than anything, and she loves us the same, despite the fact that she didn't play with us. To us, she's the greatest mother of all time. And I admit, I wish things today were similar to what they were back then, but they're not.
I adore my children, but I do not owe them all of my time.
Today, parents can feel immense pressure to always be present with our children. Thanks to social media, being anything less than the perfect parent can make you feel guilty and terrible. You should make all of their meals from scratch, dress them in matching outfits, stage creative photo shoots, and play with them 24/7. Because of you, they should always be busy, right? You sign them up for camp and after-school activities, plan interactive parties, and spend hours on Pinterest organizing arts and crafts that have an educational purpose. Long story short, kids can't be bored for one damn second anymore.
While I understand the necessity to not be engrossed in screens and technology all the time, I'm still not buying into this stressful need to constantly play with my kids and be present with them all day long. Yes, I understand that my children will only be little once and that this time goes by quickly, but I also feel that they (and I) need to be left alone sometimes.
It may sound harsh, but my kids need to learn to just . . . be. They don't need me to constantly entertain them, just like my mother didn't feel the need to constantly entertain me. They should be able to create their own fun without my help. I don't care if they collect a pile of rocks from the backyard or put on an elaborate play in the backyard. If my children are bored, that's on them.
But I will admit that I've struggled with this. Even when I'm working from home, trying to meet a deadline to help provide for my family, I feel guilty for not concentrating solely on my kids. And then I think, "What a joke, right?" I work, cook, clean, and parent them every single day, so why can't I also relax and think about myself sometimes? I enjoy playing with my kids, but it's not my job to do it hourly, even if they ask me to or tell me they're bored. I adore my children, but I do not owe them all of my time.
Today, I'm learning to find a happy medium. I've found that when my son asks, "Mom, will you play Candy Land with me?" and I respond "No," his world does not implode. He doesn't cry or throw a temper tantrum. Sometimes, yes, he feels disappointed, but he's grown to understand that Mommy is not going to be his constant playmate. He has a little sister for that.
I will continue to be present with my kids by doing things like turning my phone off and playing soccer with them in the yard. But just like my own wonderful mother, I refuse to be my kids' constant entertainment. I'm sure they can figure it out on their own. And just like I love my mom despite her never playing with me, I'm sure my children will love me, too. I will enjoy my kids being little once, but not every second of it, because that's just too damn exhausting.
