NASA's Newly Released Images of Mars Are the Next Best Thing to Space Travel
We may not all be able to experience Mars firsthand, but NASA's newly released photos are the next best thing. NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) recently sent back a large batch of over 1,000 images of the planet's surface, and they are stunning.
It's not the first time the MRO sent back photos; we started receiving them in 2005 when it first set out for signs of water. However, the high delivery of images occurs only every 26 months when the sun and Mars are standing opposite of each other, reports Gizmodo.
Luckily for us, the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment catalog has a total of over 44,000 images of Mars so far. See some of the best recent photos of Mars ahead!

We Should Have Known This Was Going to be Hailey Baldwin's Halloween Costume
Halloween weekend brought out the sexiest and scariest costumes in the supermodel world, but there were also some surprisingly simple outfits we should have known would make the cut. At the top of the list? Hailey Baldwin's gypsy costume. While we predicted she and her best gal pals (that's Kendall and Kylie Jenner, FYI) would follow a '90s pop-star theme, both Hailey and Kendall stunned us all by choosing drastically different costumes. Hailey was a sexy gypsy while Kendall went with a darker, goth-girl outfit, leaving Kylie alone to channel '90s pop star Christina Aguilera.
As for the rest of your favorite supermodels? Alessandra Ambrosia dressed up as Jessica Rabbit and Taylor Hill went the spooky route, dressing up as the devil. Read on to see what all the models ended up rocking on Halloween.
Thailand's Fashion-Forward Princess Is Basically the Real-Life Blair Waldorf
Gossip Girl's Blair Waldorf may have rocked a crown for a very brief period of time, but her real-life counterpart from Thailand was born into royalty. Sirivannavari Nariratana, the only daughter of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and Sujarinee Vivacharawongse, lives a life that's pretty similar to that of the iconic TV character. For starters, Sirivannavari's got a wardrobe we'd desperately love to raid, full of designer pieces from Chanel, Balmain, and Hermès. She also sits front row during Fashion Month (and Couture Fashion Month), and when she's not viewing other people's clothes, this princess is creating her own. That's right: on top of being a full-time royal, she's a designer, too, and even showed her collection in Paris a few years ago.
While you'll have to travel to Siam Paragon, a shopping mall in Bangkok, to get your fill of Sirivannavari's creations, her styling tips are readily available for all to follow. Look through to see some lessons this stylish and regal lady has given us in the past. Then check out the one accessory every power woman wears.

These Adorable Illustrations of Geeky Villains Will Totally Change Your Perception About Them
It's easy to paint villains from comic books and movies as soulless people who care about nothing. But one artist wanted to look past this perception, so he created adorable illustrations of villains getting hugs from the heroes that try to destroy them.
Created by Spain-based designer Nacho Diaz, the "Villains Need Love" project is about showcasing these characters in a different light — and in a book. Diaz currently has a Kickstarter campaign to put his illustrations in a book and on stickers, prints, and even phone cases.
Diaz chose villains because of how much he enjoyed drawing them and changing the message of who they are. "Most of the time [the villains] are the way they are because they had a hard time in the past, so I thought . . . Would they be different with some love in their lives?" Diaz wrote on the Kickstarter description.
The Kickstarter has already surpassed its goal of $5,439 with more than $15,262 raised (at the time of writing). The project does have 14 days left to go, so you can still claim one of the various rewards like pledging $6 to receive a sticker set or giving $17 to receive a phone case. You can check out some of our favorite illustrations ahead.
Princess Beatrice of York Hangs With Kate Middleton, but Her Style's on Another Level
You might have heard Princess Beatrice's name with ties to Uber executive Dave Clark. The longtime couple made headlines recently with news of their split, but we're here to prove the Royal Highness of York can hold her own. Not only does the princess regularly attend family events alongside her younger sister, Eugenie; her grandmother Queen Elizabeth II; and Kate Middleton, but she also participates in charity work and is developing a career in business.
From a fashion perspective, Beatrice is a natural. Her wardrobe consists of key pieces that turn heads on the red carpet, at fashion shows, and on the street, but it's the way she wears them that counts. While the princess favors Peter Pan collars, avant-garde fascinators, and all sorts of embellishments, every outfit includes an element of surprise. Read on for 73 lessons you can learn just by studying her style.
When It Comes to Fashion, Queen Letizia Is No Old-School Royal - Her 2016 Style Prove It

Letizia is all about making the new rules of royal fashion, demonstrating her commitment to being different with every outfit she's worn this year. Does This Monkey Resemble Lord Voldemort? The Internet Seems to Think So
A monkey recently born at the UK's Paignton Zoo has garnered a lot of attention for its pretty uncanny resemblance to Lord Voldemort.
According to The Mirror, the baby monkey is the first ever to be delivered via a C-section. The zoo's head of veterinary services, Ghislaine Sayers, said, "We have only done three C-sections here in the last 16 years. Jo, our surgeon on this occasion, has performed them on dogs, cats, cows and sheep before – but never a primate."
So while the monkey was brought into this earth in a miraculous manner, it also looks like it could have ties to the dark arts . . . and people on Twitter have plenty of feelings about it. Since the monkey's birth, the hashtag #VoldemortMonkey is full of hilarious reactions.

If You Try to Figure Out the Mistake in This Math Problem, It'll Make You Go Crazy
Not all math problems are meant to be solved - some are here just to watch the world burn and make people question everything they ever learned in school. And while some problems have different solutions, others have answers that don't deal with numbers at all, like a recent Facebook post asking people to find a math mistake.
The photo, shared by Facebook user Antley Lamont Staten, shows a photo of a man holding up two sheets of paper. One paper has the numbers 1-9 written on it. The other paper asks people to share when you find the mistake. Try to solve it for yourself below:
Did you groan? Or are you trying to figure out what the issue is with the numbers? The answer is on the paper to the left - the man spelled "mistake" wrong. The post has clearly struck a nerve, considering it has more than 94,000 reactions, 400,000 shares, and plenty more comments.
Sometimes the answer really is simple and requires no math at all.
Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber, Hands Down, Won Halloween in Their Punk Rock Outfits
When we saw Cindy Crawford's snap of her family's Halloween costumes, we said, "WHOA." The family of four wore coordinating punk rock outfits to the annual Casamigos Tequila party in LA. Cindy mixed and matched prints for a fun outfit, wearing a ripped pink shirt, graphic leather jacket, tutu, and tights. Kaia also followed her mother's lead with mixing patterns, but chose a slightly more revealing top to pair with her chain skirt and fishnet tights. The two, along with Rande and Presley Gerber, even dyed their hair and wore heavy makeup to complete the punk rock look.
It appears this Halloween, stars went for an edgier, darker vibe and we don't mind one bit. Read on to analyze the family's outfits photo by photo because the details deserve to be seen. The Gerbers, hands down, won Halloween weekend.
How I Lost Weight Having Champagne, Bread, and Cheese Every Day
The following post was originally featured on Love, Sweat, and Fitness and written by Katie Dunlop, who is part of POPSUGAR Select Fitness.
Is it possible to lose weight on vacation?
I'm all about that "Green Juice Now, Champagne Later" life, but vacation is a whole other ______.
I've spent the better part of the last weeks in Europe and have tracked my weight, workouts and food to find out if it is possible to lose weight on vacation!
I gave myself a challenge. I wanted to be accountable to myself and to all of you, attempting to find the perfect balance between getting a little wild on vacation and keeping my health/body on track.
We spent almost two weeks traveling through Spain. We stayed in Barcelona, Ibiza, Mallorca and Sevilla. Then we explored Portugal for the last week. It was incredible!
I blogged throughout the trip after each destination. Sharing my favorite food finds, travel tips, and workouts.
My goal was simple. To come back at the SAME WEIGHT that I left. This might not sound so crazy, but knowing my plan was to enjoy every glass of cava, loaf of fresh bread and round of cheese, it felt pretty aggressive to me.
The weeks leading up to the trip I stuck to my LSF Hot Body Meal Plan & Sweat Guide (Both will be released in early November). Eating clean and working out 6 days a week. I felt awesome! I don't often weight myself, but needed to in order to accurately measure my results.
The day we left I got in a great cardio session and I weighed in: 130.6 lbs - 14.9% body fat – 62 lbs muscle mass.
Everyone's body is different, but besides measurements, body fat is the best way to see where you stand. It's the percentage of actual fat as opposed to your overall weight which includes; muscle, water weight, skeletal structure etc.
There are different opinions and standards out there, but according to ACE here's a quick breakdown for women's body fat standards:
- Athletes: 14 to 20%,
- Fit 21 to 24%
- Average 25 to 31%
- Time to Get on the Health Train: 32%+
So, this is my happy place. I usually sit right around 130 lbs and 15% body fat. It's my healthy, toned, fit base.
♥Vacay Time
A lot can happen in three weeks. Three weeks of non-stop temptation to eat, drink and be lazy, but I was determined to NOT let that happen . . . at least not the lazy part
Like anything, having a plan is key, but you must flexible. I planned to work out every day. I knew there would be days that I just couldn't or wouldn't want to sleep in, my intention though was to get up and get to work!
My Workouts:
- Every Single Day:
- My Bikini Ab Ladder It literally takes 5 minutes and is 300 abs. Even if that is all I did in a day, it felt golden.
- We walked EVERYWHERE! Average 3 to 5 miles a day. Save some cab money for wine and get you're walk on.
- 3 Days a Week: 20 min Hot Body HIIT body weight workouts
- 2 Days a Week: 2 to 3 mile jog. The BEST way to explore a new city, get your bearings and burn some calories.
- 1 Day a Week: Yoga. Felt so good to get a deep stretch in and reset my body and mind for the week.
My Eating:
- Intermittent Fasting: Most days, we would get up, work out and have our first meal around 11 am.
- Protein BAE: Made sure to be getting plenty of lean proteins everyday. Fish, eggs, chicken, and pork were the staples.
- Fruits & Veggies: Snacked on dried fruit and loaded up on veggies with each meal.
- Bread & Cheese: Yep . . . they deserve their own category here. I tried to only have it once a day and always made sure it was cloaked in goodness like a quinoa, goat cheese, and beet salad
- Cava: Spain's champagne. It's delicious and CHEAP! (like $3.00 a glass cheap) You feel like it's happy hour 24/7. Normally I'd try to drink more vodka sodas to cut calories, but the price was too good to resist. I'm gonna be real honest . . . I probably drank about 4 to 5 drinks a day. Lunch, Tapas and dinner drinks. C'est La Vie!
♥So What Happened. . .
Coming home after 3 weeks of non-stop fun, I was a little nervous. Overall, I felt good, but figured I had gained about 2 lbs. Sure, that would mean I didn't hit my challenge goal, but with all we ate and drank I couldn't be mad about it either.
We got home late Tuesday night. Wednesday and Thursday were a wash, but Friday it was time to find out what happened!
I was ready to face the music and see what kind of damage had been done . . .
Like on my pre-vacation weigh-in day, I did about an hour of cardio first, then hopped on the scale. I wanted to make sure it was an even playing field.
Dun dun dun . . . let the scale do it's magic and BAM! I was down almost 2l bs!! 128.8 lbs – 15.4% body fat – 61.3 lbs muscle mass.
♥What It Means . . .
I lost 1.8 lbs overall. That's ridiculously awesome! Yes, I went up .5% body fat and down .7 lbs in muscle mass, but that is to be expected.
At home my workouts incorporate weighted circuits, but on vacation there was only 1 day I had access to free weights. That means a huge increase in cardio which often burns muscle along with fat.
In a normal week I might have a few LSF-approved cocktails on the weekend, but almost never during the week. This trip I drank EVERY SINGLE DAY for almost three weeks. I also ate things like bread and cheese on the daily which are not in my normal diet at home.
Not only did I meet my goal, I EXCEEDED IT! It is 100% possible to both maintain and lose weight on vacation if you have a plan and a purpose!
There is absolutely NO REASON TO GAIN WEIGHT while you travel. You can do my workouts from ANYWHERE! No equipment – no excuses.
Chose your battles. Some people might think it's crazy I drank everyday, but perhaps they would be eating pastries and desserts at times where I did not. I carefully made decisions on what I wanted to splurge on.
Of course, if I drank every day, ate bread, cheese, croissants, cakes, and didn't work out I would have gained weight. Anyone would. It's about finding a balance you can live with, having a plan, and holding yourself accountable to stick to it! Your vacation will feel SO much more satisfying during and at the end.

Here's What I Regret From My First Year of Motherhood
My baby is going to reach a big milestone this week – her first birthday. That means that she'll no longer be classified as an infant . . . and that I am going to have to give up my title as a "new mom," a description that's given me more comfort than I ever could have expected. Whenever I was unsure, whenever I second-guessed a decision, I reminded myself that I was still a new mom, learning as I went. Now, after a solid year on duty, I am ready to meet my own developmental milestone, but not without a few regrets about my first year as a parent.
Whoa, This Harry Potter Theory Will Change Your Entire Perspective on Slytherins
Few people admit to liking Salazar Slytherin, but that might change with a new theory floating around.
In the Harry Potter series, Salazar Slytherin is portrayed as one of the Hogwarts founders who was extremely anti-muggleborns. But Tumblr user maglet-301 challenges that by pointing out a section in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets that states how he wanted to build Hogwarts away from anyone who might compromise the safety of it. See below.
It doesn't end there. Tumblr user datvikingtho then chimed in with a comment that explained Slytherin was most likely wary of muggleborns because Hogwarts was founded during an era of witch-hunts. The other founders were also concerned but had their own reasons as to why they wanted muggleborns. For example, as datvikingtho explains, Ravenclaw wanted to bring both purebloods and muggleborns together to share magic with more people. But Slytherin, rightfully so, was afraid to follow suit. He didn't necessarily want to risk the lives of anyone by inviting someone who might be a potential spy or something worse.
Then it gets even crazier. The same user also delves into why the Chamber of Secrets was created. He or she thinks it was formed by Slytherin to protect students in case there was an attack. The basilisk could then easily get rid of whoever was trying to hurt the students.
Read the entire theory below. The origins of these two posts date back to nine months ago, but a Reddit thread is finally helping others see this new side of Slytherin. It might actually change the way you completely think about everyone from Slytherin house.

Vanessa Hudgens's Updo Looks Like a Basic Topknot - Until She Turns Around
Vanessa Hudgens attended the 2016 Elle Women in Hollywood event rocking our dream rehearsal-dinner look: a tiered white lace dress with an effortlessly cool topknot. The bun had all of the cool-girl elements: wisps around her face and texture. But what made it so standout was that there were three braids going up the back to lead into the twist.
Celebrity stylist Riawna Capri of Nine Zero One salon in LA created the look. She broke it down: "First section out all the hair in front of the ear out of the way. Used a little R+Co Tinsel Smoothing Oil on the hair that was left out to give it some shine and created three inverted French braids starting from her nape and moving your way up towards the top of her head. Tie them with an elastic to keep them in place. Grab all remaining hair and combine it into a pony tail. Use a little Unite Texturiza Spray on the pony tail, section into two and lightly back comb to give it some texture. Twist and pin those two sections to form a messy bun. To get a more effortless look gently pull out some strand by the hairline. Locked the style into place with R+Co Vicious Strong Hold Hairspray."

The Hoodie You Never Knew You Needed - 1 With a Pet Pocket

It's probably often, but the worst part is when you have to get up to do something and the thought of waking your little furball breaks your heart a little bit. That adorable little face . . . who wants to wake that? But the Japanese company Unihabitat has a solution for that problem: the Mewgaroo hoodie with a pocket for your cat or dog (or whatever other small animal you might have). The hoodie, currently only available in gray, has a removable liner for the pocket for easy washing, and the ladies' style features cat ears on the hood. The hood strings are also extralong to serve as a toy for your furry friend while she's in the pocket, and the shirtsleeves are made to look like paws.
We'll take two, please.
A Guide For Detoxing After Halloween
Even the healthiest among us can't help but get into the Halloween fun, and while everything's good in moderation, sometimes a night of temptation means going overboard (no regrets!). Whether you've snacked on trick-or-treating purchases too much or know you have a big weekend ahead, here are some ideas to detox when you're ready to get back on track.
- Drink more water: Make water consumption a priority the day after your Halloween festivities; not only will it help flush out all those indulgent decisions (that is, it'll help your hangover), but it'll give you more energy to tackle the day.
- Break the sugar addiction: Eating a lot of sugar will only make you crave it more, so your night of fun-sized celebration may be leading to mindless reaching for your candy stash the rest of the week. Ready for a challenge? If you're craving sweets, take celebrity trainer Jackie Warner's advice: take five days to wean yourself off sugar and refined carbs by eating lots of fresh fruits and veggies instead. If forgoing sugar altogether seems impossible (especially in light of leftover holiday treats), check out our tips for reducing your sugar cravings.
- Fight fatigue: Whether you hosted a Halloween party or spent an exhausting couple of hours corralling trick-or-treaters, the holiday can eat into your sleep time. To make sure you don't feel tired all day, fill your diet with these fatigue-fighting foods, and make a point to go to sleep early tonight - you may benefit from recovery sleep so you don't feel overly tired for the rest of the week.
- Eat nourishing foods: You've had enough of the processed stuff - now it's time to eat real food. Start with a nutrient-packed smoothie, go for a kale salad for lunch, and a spicy carrot detox ginger soup for dinner. Eating a produce-rich meal plan will help your body crave the good instead of all the bad.
- Move more: Get your metabolism going - and sweat out all the bad stuff - with an intense workout; if you can't bear the thought of exercise, go for a walk or do a few of these detoxifying yoga poses to get things moving.

Miley Cyrus Says Her Engagement Ring Doesn't Go With the Rest of Her Jewelry, but These Pics Prove Otherwise
Miley Cyrus is finally speaking out about the piece of jewelry she pairs with all her outfits: the round, gold-band engagement ring that Liam Hemsworth gave her. When the singer stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she came clean about the sparkler, revealing that, actually, it isn't exactly her style.
"This is really weird because this is like real jewelry and most of my jewelry is made out of gummy bears and cotton candy," she said, claiming that the ring doesn't go with her quirkier pieces, but that she wears it "because [he loves] me."
Well, sorry Miley — we beg to differ. You've made the ring work with even your kookiest looks, as evident by the photos ahead. Scroll through to see how Miley's made the stunning piece all her own, then listen to her talk about her ring in the interview.

A 1-Handed Keyboard Exists on the iPhone - Except It's Hidden
Typing on the iPhone keyboard can be a real struggle sometimes, especially if your other hand is holding something else. It's why during every iOS update, people hope that Apple will finally do something about it. Turns out the company did create a secret one-handed keyboard, except you can't use it.
Developer Steven Troughton-Smith tweeted a photo of what the one-handed keyboard looks like on Oct. 19. He stated that the keyboard has existed since iOS 8, except you can only access it if you jailbreak your iPhone. The keyboard's existence makes sense considering iOS 8 came out when the bigger iPhone 6 Plus was released, making it harder to type on the iPhone with one hand. Take a look at Troughton-Smith's tweet.
Today's fun hack (been there since at least iOS 8); the iOS keyboard has an unused left/right one-handed mode. Activated by edge-swipe http://pic.twitter.com/zIk7x7CVmu
- Steve T-S (@stroughtonsmith) October 19, 2016
If you don't want to jailbreak your iPhone, there is another way to achieve a similar effect. Several keyboard apps, like Gboard from Google, will let you swipe to type, which helps a lot if you have a bigger iPhone like 6, 6S, or 7 Plus.

4 Stupid Things First-Time Parents Do When Expecting
Now that my kids are 2 and almost 5 (and I've been writing about motherhood for most of their young lives), I'd like to think I've learned a thing or two about parenting babies. But back in 2011, when I was about to give birth to my daughter, I was as clueless as every other first-time mom. Despite the numerous parenting books that lined my nightstand and the hours I spent researching every newborn-related thing I could think of on BabyCenter, I had no idea what kind of crazy, life-changing experience was coming my way - and how stupid some of the first parenting decisions I made truly were.
Recently, I attended a baby shower for one of my younger friends, and I was surrounded by pregnant women, glowing with the anticipation of their first child's arrival and a blissful lack of understanding about what they were really getting themselves into. I didn't want to burst their baby-joy bubbles by telling them they didn't really need the wipes warmer or every available stroller attachment, but maybe I should have. While no one can really prepare you for your first baby, let me share a few dumb things I did, so you don't have to repeat my mistakes.
- Buying every possible baby item and gadget made. Like many first-time moms, I was convinced I needed everything those online registry lists suggested, including multiple strollers, a bouncer, a swing, a bassinet, a crib, a wipes warmer, a bottle warmer, a million swaddles and sleep sacks, and, of course, a couple of pairs of baby skinny jeans, size 0-3 months. My daughter hated the bouncer and swing, I never used those warmers, and the skinny jeans? The poor girl couldn't bend her chunky legs in them. Now I would tell my former self to buy the bare minimum. One safe place to put the baby down is ample. Trendy gadgets probably aren't necessary. And remember, Amazon and Diapers.com deliver just as fast after the baby's born as they do before, and you'll know much better what you really need once you and your baby get to know each other.
- Getting too attached to my birth plan. I never wrote out a birth plan, but I was adamant about not wanting a C-section. So after 16 hours of labor, when my doctor told me I'd only progressed to six centimeters and it was time to consider one, I freaked out. I was pumped full of drugs, beyond exhausted, and totally emotionally unstable, basically the worst combination to process what felt like such a big loss. Now, two C-sections later, I've been known to sing their praises to whomever will listen (I was lucky and had two really easy recoveries). In retrospect, I wish I would have gone into my first labor with a more open mind about the delivery. The goal, after all, is to have a healthy baby; don't let how he or she arrives ruin your experience.
- Not setting boundaries for hospital and home visitors after the birth. Besides asking my mom to stay for the a week after my daughter was born, I never even thought about this one. But after a long, rough delivery, I realized that recovering from major surgery and becoming a mom was overwhelming enough, and the addition of having to make small talk with relatives or worrying about whether I'd need to breastfeed while my father-in-law was in the room was too much for me. Even if you're a person who usually loves being surrounded by people, consider setting some limits for the number of visitors who come to the hospital and your home for the first few weeks and definitely set a time limit for each visit. Also remember that it's not your job to serve anyone or make sure your house is clean. An appropriate response to a visitor request: "We'd love to see you from 12-2 on Thursday, and it would be great if you could bring lunch."
- Thinking I'd seamlessly jump back into my old life after my baby was born. After gaining 45 pounds with my daughter, I vividly remember telling my husband I was planning on losing the weight through breastfeeding, hot yoga, and juice cleanses (I'd been doing a lot of the last two before I got pregnant). Then my daughter was born, and I quickly realized I was one of those oh-so-lucky women whose bodies hold on to the last 5-10 pounds during the year-plus I was breastfeeding; that my hot yoga gym had no childcare, making it almost impossible to make a class; and my favorite juice cleanse had a big disclaimer that said "not recommended while breastfeeding" - nd those were just a few of the least shocking discoveries I made as a new mom. This isn't one you can really prepare for, but maybe don't sign up for a year-long Bikram membership that starts on your due date or plan to attend your girlfriend's bachelorette party when your baby's six weeks old. Things will change after you become a mom, and you won't know what, how, or why until after delivery.

Pregnancy and Public Transportation: What It's Really Like
When you're pregnant and rely on public transportation on a regular basis (in my case, a commuter train and subway), each day begins as its very own social experiment. Will you or won't you be offered a seat by a well-meaning stranger? Will you or won't you be elbowed/shoved/cut off by a harried fellow commuter? Will your day start with a firsthand reminder that the world is full of good people, or will it send you scowling to your office, wishing that strangers on foot came with ID numbers so that you could report the jerk who took the last seat on the subway?
After a pregnancy and a half of utilizing NYC's mass transit system, I haven't come to any startling conclusions about humanity or what the city is doing right or wrong. What I have learned, however, is this:
- Be comfortable with speaking up to get what you want. There are a couple of really good reasons that your fellow commuters aren't leaping out of their seats for you. First off, there's the golden rule that everyone from 20-somethings to grandparents knows (or should know): never assume that a woman is pregnant. This is particularly true in Winter; when your frame is hidden under a bulky coat and gear, it's not easy to differentiate the expectant woman from the one who's just added an extra layer. Secondly, people going about their daily business aren't necessarily aware and alert of every new person to enter the bus or train. Whether engrossed in an email or newspaper, they're probably not actively searching for random acts of kindness to complete during rush hour but would more than likely be happy to help you out. Just say, "Excuse me, I'm pregnant, any chance you'd mind if I took this seat?" You'll very rarely be let down.
- You never know what others are dealing with. While it's easy to tell if a person is elderly, using crutches, or wearing a cast, there are plenty of other physical ailments that aren't so obvious. If you're feeling great, wearing comfortable shoes, and not traveling too far, don't stress about scoring a seat. I loved this piece from The New York Times's Metropolitan Diary about the friendliest "standoff" ever between a pregnant woman and a man with a cane.
- Your own peers may be the least sympathetic passengers. I have no idea what this is all about, but women in their 20s and 30s, as a whole, tend to be the last to offer up their seats or even acknowledge a pregnant person. Presumably, they haven't yet been in your position themselves, but still . . . what happened to girl power?!
- And those who you least expect it from may be the kindest. That tough-looking guy with the oversize headphones? He's likely to be your most surprising ally on the train. I had the extremely odd experience of a stranger who I'd steer clear of if I encountered him on a deserted street at night offering for me to hold onto his jacket when no pole, handle, or seat was available. I declined, but after I processed the weirdness of the whole thing, I realized that he was just offering what he could.
- Come prepared for the worst-case scenario. As the laws of karma would have it, on the days when you're wearing sneakers and are empty-handed, you'll have your pick of seats on a quiet train. The one time all month you wear heels and tote your laptop into the office? You'll deal with subway delays, and no one in the vicinity will be feeling charitable. Do your best to travel light, wear clothes that you're comfortable in (and a coat that's easy to unbutton/zip, it can get hot on those stuffy trains), and always bring a bottle of water with you.
Fellow pregnant commuters, what's your experience been like? Did I miss anything?
