I Tried Kim Kardashian's Pregnancy Style - and It Wasn't That Bad
You know you've gawked over Kim Kardashian's style through the years. Who hasn't? She makes revealing, shocking, and sometimes downright confusing fashion choices - remember that pink latex dress from February? And for as much as she has complained that "pregnancy is the worst experience" and tweeted about being "so f*cking sick," she certainly hasn't let that show in her clothing selections. She's still rocking the same cleavage-baring, skin-tight ensembles with heels that she does when she's not with child. So it's not surprising that it's even more fascinating to watch what she chooses to wear while pregnant, probably because she doesn't stray from her signature sexy style at all.
And just imagine how much more fun it is to watch her dress when you're practically counting down the days in your pregnancy right along with her.
This is the second time Kim and I have been pregnant during roughly the same nine months, and while Kim isn't exactly one of my style icons (I look more to Kate Hudson or Gwyneth Paltrow for my fashion inspiration), I can't help but see how she dresses her bump and wonder what the hell she's thinking as I pull on my maternity skinnies, basic Old Navy maternity tee, and ballet flats for the fourth day in a row.
Don't get me wrong, I don't forgo all style for sweatpants and oversize shirts when I'm pregnant (maybe just when I'm at home?). I'm happy to dress up for a special event and may even wear heels for date night, but I'm also not going out of my way to waddle around in uncomfortable shoes at the office, put my newfound cleavage on display, or attempt wearing a getup that requires more than two people to get into.
So when a co-worker jokingly suggested I dress like Kim for a week, we all had a good laugh and moved on. And then I thought about it more, and it actually sounded like fun. I was game. There's something about being pregnant that makes me feel slightly removed from my own body, so honestly I wasn't that intimidated by the prospect, more nervous about how the clothes would fit and just how much of my veiny cleavage I would have to show. Fast forward a few weeks and the looks had arrived - knee-high boots and all - and it was time to dive in.
Of course, if I was going to do this, it had to be authentic, and since Kim claims to sometimes even wear "two pairs of pregnancy Spanx," it was only right that I would start there too. My first experience with the supertight and slimming undergarment was not as bad as I imagined (although I did only opt for one pair). I actually kind of wished I'd had them the weekend before when I attended a wedding in a fitted dress and felt slightly insecure about my backside jiggling on the dance floor. Maybe Kim was onto something?
