  • AllTrails (iOS, free; Android, free): If you're in discovery mode, this tool helps you explore over 50,000 trails and even learn from other hikers about looming obstacles you might encounter, like fallen trees.
  • MyNature Tree Guide (iOS, $2): Impress your friends when you're able to identify over 200 different types of trees along the way.
  • MapMyHike (iOS, free; Android, free): If fitness is your goal, this will deliver all the info you want, such as distance covered, calories burned, and average pace.
