Don't Go Hiking Before You Download These Apps

Sure, a canteen and sturdy walking books are some of the basics any mountaineer takes with them hiking, but there's a lot more you can bring with you to ensure that your adventure goes off without a hitch. From stargazing tools that practically illuminate the night sky to weather applications that will help you avoid getting drenched, we found seven apps you should load up before you adventure out. The best part is that you don't have to carry anything extra.

  • AllTrails (iOS, free; Android, free): If you're in discovery mode, this tool helps you explore over 50,000 trails and even learn from other hikers about looming obstacles you might encounter, like fallen trees.
  • MyNature Tree Guide (iOS, $2): Impress your friends when you're able to identify over 200 different types of trees along the way.
  • MapMyHike (iOS, free; Android, free): If fitness is your goal, this will deliver all the info you want, such as distance covered, calories burned, and average pace.
  • Star Walk (iOS, $3, Android, $3): You have escaped the city hustle and are now deep in the outdoors. Take a moment to enjoy your surroundings. Look up into the sky - it's time to start stargazing. Just point your phone toward the sky, and the app will tell you what you're looking at.
  • Camp Finder (iOS, $4; Android, $3): In too deep and want to find out where you can pitch a tent? Search for RV grounds and campsites and get access to user reviews while you're on the go.
  • Dark Sky (iOS, $4): Get minute-to-minute weather predictions so you can avoid getting caught in a storm.
  • GPS Coleman Campfire Stories (iOS, free): Gather everyone around the crackling fire and read silly (albeit scary) stories before bedtime.
